util.inspect: name a value with a native port of V8's GetConstructorName - #46111
util.inspect throws TypeError: No default value for the graphql-js result of {constructor:me{name{city}}} and qs.parse("constructor[name][a]=1", {plainObjects: true}). Nested: handleMaxCallStackSize assertion failed.
constructor[name]=Admin prints [Admin: null prototype]. A constructor getter or Proxy trap runs.
Cause: internalGetConstructorName (src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts:2958) reads val.constructor?.name. Node.js asks V8's GetConstructorName, which reads own data properties only.
Fix
jsFunctionGetConstructorName (src/jsc/bindings/UtilInspect.cpp) replaces it: a port of V8's chain walk and class_name() that reads only object storage. The Worker duplicate-entry message uses it.
In --aot executables it asks the compiler's runtime about compiled classes, functions, namespaces. A table row says it runs no code.
Verified: internal-inspect.test.js (100 of 151 tests fail on main), two programs in test/aot/parallel/.
Self-reviewed: 64 concerns raised, 60 addressed. Not taken: dev-server and node:inspector printers (other code), tracking issues, a named reviewer (maintainer's call).
Background
V8 first takes the constructor that made the value. JSC records none, so this step is not ported.
The table of built-ins (src/codegen/builtins/host/) tells the --aot compiler what a native function does.
Considered a JS descriptor walk: it cannot read the name a function was made with.
Downsides
Values V8 names by their constructor still differ from Node.js: a cookie dictionary prints Object, an async function Function.
jsFunctionGetConstructorName adds 3,184 B (compiled alone, -O3). One more table entry changes one engine snapshot: a computed-key read of process.env gets the type Function.prototype too (Notes).
Notes
Origin. There is no issue and no reporter. A comparison run against Node.js v26.3.0 found the difference. A search of the tracker for handleMaxCallStackSize and for "No default value" inspect finds 0 issues and 0 discussions. Two earlier tries were closed by a stale sweep with no review: #33161 had a try around the tag read of formatRaw (now #46414), and #34755 tried V8's first step for user classes with oven-sh/WebKit#312.
Repro. Node.js v26.12.1 and this PR print the last column. The first block uses graphql 16.14.2 with default settings: graphql-js builds data from null-prototype objects, and the client chooses the alias.
constutil=require("node:util");const{ graphql, buildSchema }=require("graphql");constschema=buildSchema("type Name { city: String } type User { name: Name id: ID } type Query { me: User }");constrootValue={me: {id: "1",name: {city: "Paris"}}};constresult=awaitgraphql({ schema, rootValue, source: "{ constructor: me { name { city } } }"});util.inspect(result.data);// main: TypeError: No default value [Object: null prototype] { constructor: [Object: null prototype] { name: [Object: null prototype] { city: 'Paris' }}}util.format("%O",result);// main: AssertionError: handleMaxCallStackSize assertion failed: TypeError: No default value// With the source "{ constructor: me { name: id }}", main prints [1: null prototype] {...}.
The second block needs no package. parsed builds what qs.parse(query, { plainObjects: true }) returns (checked with qs 6.17.0).
Who reaches it.util.inspect, util.format, util.formatWithOptions, Console of node:console, the messages of node:assert, and the inspect argument of a custom inspect function. The value must have a prototype chain with no usable constructor: a null-prototype object, a child of one, or a module namespace.
A graphql-js result reaches the throw at default settings. qs needs plainObjects: true. With default options it drops the key.
A dictionary that a class makes (NullObject of cookie and find-my-way, Empty of fast-querystring) prints Object <[Object: null prototype] {}> before and after this PR. Node.js prints the class (Empty, C). Only a data key named constructor changes something there.
No program outside the tests of this PR is known to inspect a function on such a chain.
What is ported and what is not. V8's GetConstructorHelper has three steps.
The walk: on each object of the chain, an own string Symbol.toStringTag data property, then (not on the value itself) an own constructor data property that is a function with a name other than Object. This is ported. The name of the function is the one it was made with (JSFunction::originalName), not its name property. A function that a computed key names was made with no name. A bound function and a function of a ShadowRealm do not count, as in V8. The walk ends at an object that answers getPrototypeOf itself (a Proxy, import.meta), because the prototype in its structure is not the one it reports.
class_name(): ported word for word (v8ClassName), with V8's rule that a view of a resizable buffer has no word.
The first step, the constructor that made the value: not ported. JSC has no record of it.
An earlier version of this PR let the kind of a function stand in for the first step (AsyncFunction, GeneratorFunction), unless JSObject::mayBePrototype() was set. That bit is a hint for the optimizer and not a record. The DFG removes an unused Object.create(fn) together with the mark. A loop that makes an async function on a bare chain, runs a dead Object.create(f) and inspects f printed Function for its first 1,449 turns and AsyncFunction for the other 18,551. With BUN_JSC_useDFGJIT=0 and in Node.js the answer never changes. The runtime of --aot sets the mark at another time again. So the step is gone: a function gets the name that its chain has, or Function.
So these still differ from Node.js. The table differsFromNode of the fixture (22 rows) and the fourth column of builtinNames hold today's output for each:
An instance of a class with no usable constructor on its chain prints Object or the name from the chain. Node.js prints the class: [Foo: null prototype] {}.
A function that is not and was not a prototype: Node.js prints its kind (AsyncFunction, GeneratorFunction) and does not read the chain. Bun prints the name from the chain, or Function. 9 rows pin this. util.inspect and util.types.isAsyncFunction: read the kind of a function from the engine #45735 reads the kind of a function from the engine for the label, and the name can take it from the same place.
Where main read constructor or the tag in the ordinary way and that gave the constructor V8 records, the output moves away from Node.js: an own constructor property (data or getter) that is the class, a getter or a Proxy on the chain that gives it, a string tag that the walk reads before that constructor, a tag getter that returns the class name, a node:vm global with a constructor variable. These are the 4 calls of the corpus.
V8's first step uses the name property of the constructor when it is a string. The walk never reads it.
V8 infers a name for a function from the source (ns.Widget = function () {}, a method of an object literal under a computed key). JSC keeps no such name.
A function that the Function constructor made has no name in V8, so Node.js prints Object. Bun prints anonymous, as main does. --aot compiles a constant text that is given to Function as a function with the name anonymous, and no host call tells that function from one that is written with the name. Plain Bun must print what the executable prints.
A built-in value on a chain that has a tag or a constructor gets that name. Node.js prints the type (Map).
Promise, DataView, WeakRef, FinalizationRegistry, a native error type, a Map or Set iterator and a typed array on a resizable buffer get the class_name() word (Object, Error, Map Iterator). Node.js prints the constructor name when the built-in constructor made the value.
Ahead-of-time executables.bun build --compile --aot (#45631) landed on main after this PR was opened. It compiles the program and Bun's own modules, inspect.ts among them, to machine code.
What differed. At cceab48 a compiled executable printed 9 of 18 probe lines differently from plain Bun: the kind of a compiled function, a compiled function as the constructor on the chain (Object), and a compiled generator object (Object). The Worker duplicate-entry message named a handle below class Sub extends FileHandle {} as FileHandle, where plain Bun and main's expression say Sub.
A class, its prototype object and a function of a compiled program make their own properties when something first looks for one. The walk calls AOT::PropertyWalk::materializeLazyProperties before it reads an object.
AOT::CompiledCallee::name gives the name a compiled function was made with. A compiled bound function has none, as in V8. A function of the program that a computed key names has none (CompiledCallee::displayName is empty for it), as in plain Bun.
AOT::isGeneratorObject gives Generator. The Symbol.toStringTag of a compiled namespace is read with a VMInquiry lookup, which answers Module or Deferred Module and evaluates nothing.
Compiled objects needed no change. JSObject::getDirect branches to getDirectFromCompiledObject for a compiled structure, and that reads a field or a property that was defined later.
The row. src/codegen/builtins/host/native-functions.builtins.ts describes each native function that internal/util/inspect names. Without a row the compiler treats the call as unknown code and hands the operand to undescribed native code (describeCodeOf in aot/ir/AOTEffectsOfBuiltins.cpp, applyParameter in aot/valueflow/AOTValueFlowBuiltins.cpp of oven-sh/WebKit). The row says: capability heap (it allocates and runs no JavaScript), it throws, it only inspects its operand, and it reads ObjectFields, ShapeWords, OrderWords, NamedProperties and PrototypeLinks. DisallowVMEntry in the function asserts the first claim in debug and ASAN builds. An executable built with --aot-validate compares each call with the row: 64 calls in the typed part of the first program and 4 in the second, 0 changed an operand.
The native function is in no --trim feature, because node:worker_threads and internal/util/inspect belong to different features and both name it. --trim keeps its code.
Two programs in test/aot/parallel/. The runner (test/aot/run-parallel.ts) builds each with --aot and compares what the executable prints with plain Bun. A run of plain Bun that ends with an error fails the program, so a row that throws in both does not pass.
builtin-modules/util-inspect-names-a-value-whose-chain-has-no-constructor/ prints 161 lines: every row of constructor-name-fixture.cjs (its file is compiled with the program, so a compiled executable is held to the same 136 rows as plain Bun) and 25 lines for typed objects, classes and functions that hold the name, computed keys, the prototype object of a class, and the plain and the deferred namespace.
workers/a-duplicate-entry-of-a-transfer-list-is-named-by-its-class.ts prints 4 lines. It is the caller with no walk in JS before the native call.
The programs store no expected output. The runner keeps an /* Output: */ comment only for a program that must differ from plain Bun. The 136 fixture rows, the two namespaces and the Worker messages have literal assertions in the tests of plain Bun (internal-inspect.test.js, worker_threads.test.ts). The other lines hold the executable to plain Bun only.
--aot does not support ShadowRealm (TS100050). The two ShadowRealm rows are in constructor-name-shadow-realm-fixture.cjs, which only the test of plain Bun and the Node.js run load. For that reason bun test --aot internal-inspect.test.js does not build.
Local runs, at 87ace74 with WebKit 8c6c963e3c49. The runner needs a canary build, so with the debug build each program was built by hand, with and without --aot-erase-types, and its output compared with plain Bun: identical, also with BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1. Before the last merge of main the first program also passed through a copy of the runner with the canary check off.
Known: a function of Bun's own modules that a computed key names keeps the key as its name in an executable, because no exported host call tells that case for a library function. No such function is a constructor value.
One engine snapshot changes.test/aot/engine-tests/pipeline/gc/custom-accessor-reached-computed-key.ir holds what the compiler's pipeline prints for a program that reads RegExp and process.env under computed keys. test/aot/engine/ir-6.test.ts runs it.
What changes. 11 CHECK lines, each only by builtin(FunctionPrototype): the proven type of the process.env read. bun test/aot/tools/update-ir-tests.ts wrote the file anew. Of the 1,601 IR tests in test/aot/engine-tests this is the only one whose result differs between main's table and this branch's table.
Why. The flow analysis gives each of the two reads the prototype of the receiver of the other read. valueflow-why values= shows it: the RegExp reads also hold Object.prototype, and the process.env read also holds Function.prototype. The larger type is still sound. It is less exact: no key of process.env gives Function.prototype.
It is not this function. The row does not matter: without the row the output is the same. Main's tree with one dummy $newCppFunction in inspect.ts and no other change prints the same lines as this branch. The thread count (threads=1 to 32) does not matter. Both cases add one entry to the table. A PR that adds a native function to main can meet the same line.
Not known: why one more entry makes the two reads share the result of the __proto__ getter. That is in the value-flow solver of oven-sh/WebKit and is not changed here.
The other design. A descriptor walk in JS (about 45 lines, Object.getOwnPropertyDescriptor and the util.types checks) removes every throw and every name from data too. On 9,555 probed values it gave the same name as the first version of this port for 9,142. The port matched V8 for 407 more, and the walk for none more: a bound function as constructor (the walk reads its name), and the word Array Iterator. Outside that corpus a redefined name and a name getter differ as well. The port is in native code because Node.js has this lookup in native code, because #39923 added the function beside it in the same way, and because only native code can read the name a function was made with.
Landing order. Six open PRs touch the same code or the same tests. #47129 is merged, and the two programs follow its layout of test/aot/parallel/.
util.inspect: read Symbol.toStringTag in a try, as Node.js does #46414 has the try around the tag read of formatRaw, which was part of this PR. Two rows need both changes (a tag getter that throws, on a null-prototype object and on its child). They go into the one that lands second.
Same kind of read, not changed here. This PR closes two of the places where Bun stands in for V8's GetConstructorName or drops a try of Node.js. The others:
getConstructorName (the JS caller) has 6 of Node's 20 wellKnownPrototypes and uses instanceof, which runs a user Symbol.hasInstance. It also reads descriptor.value.name as Node's JS does.
The global console.log and Bun.inspect have their own printer (ConsoleObject.rs). It does not use this helper and is not changed. It takes a name from an own constructor and hides that key (Print an object's own constructor key in console.log, Bun.inspect and bun:test #38937), and it still throws on a tag getter that throws past the depth limit.
src/runtime/bake/client/inspect.ts:457-472 reads constructor?.name in the page, inside the console.log override of the dev server. It has the same throw. It is browser code and cannot call the native function, so it needs its own fix.
src/js/node/inspector.ts:198 describes an object with Object.prototype.toString where V8 uses GetConstructorName.
Node.js tags the global of a new node:vm context with the constructor name of the sandbox ([object Foo]). Bun has no such step and prints [object Object].
Measurements. The corpus, speed and .text numbers are from release builds of main at 2d6d4454f3 with and without the first version of this change, linux x64. That version had the kind step and no --aot code. The kind step changes only rows whose value is a function, and main threw for each of those. perf, valgrind and bloaty are not installed, so instruction counts come from perf_event_open (instructions:u, main thread, GC off).
User code run by the lookup: 0. Before: the constructor getter ran 1 to 3 times for each util.inspect call, and a replaced Object.prototype.toString ran too. The tests pass with BUN_JSC_crashOnDisallowedVMEntry=1 and BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1.
Output against Node.js v26.3.0. The rows of the fixture also match Node.js v26.12.1, the version that Bun reports now. The corpus is a grid of shapes made for this PR, not a sample of real programs: plain values with each constructor and tag variant on the value and on two prototypes, 68 kinds of built-in value and function on 7 chains (fresh, a prototype, once a prototype, the prototype property of a function), proxies.
10,087 lines: 9,148 differ before, 786 after. No line that was equal now differs.
22,078 calls: 17,547 differ before, 1,749 after. 4 that were equal now differ. 3,264 throw before, 0 after.
Size of the first version: .text 81,929,573 to 81,932,453 B (+2,880). The embedded built-in JS shrinks by 299 B. JS2NATIVE_COUNT 265 to 266.
Size now. jsFunctionGetConstructorName, compiled alone at -O3 -DNDEBUG against the release headers of the pinned WebKit (8c6c963e3c49), with its helpers inlined: 3,184 B. The text of the object file: 6,169 B on main, 15,636 B now, which counts inline functions of JSC that the link shares.
A process with no compiled code pays one flag test (vm.hasCompiledCode()) for each object of the chain, and one more for a constructor that is found.
Instructions for each util.inspect call, JIT off:
{ a: 1, b: 2 } 45,353 to 45,443, a class instance 50,681 to 50,763, [1, 2, 3] 50,802 to 50,753. The JS on this path is the same. A second run of each binary moves the count by up to 107.
a null-prototype { a, b } 56,949 to 50,431, an empty one 24,670 to 18,193, a child of a null-prototype object 110,618 to 97,723, a chain of 4 objects 134,421 to 108,958, a child whose name comes from a constructor on the chain 101,498 to 100,898.
The same with the JIT on, median of 3: { a: 1, b: 2 } 6,351 and 6,362. A null-prototype { a, b } 8,901 to 7,725, an empty one 2,991 to 2,157, a chain of 4 objects 20,626 to 17,043. A child whose name comes from a constructor on the chain 14,335 to 14,683: the lookup is now a native call and it makes a string for the name.
Heap cells for each util.inspect call, JIT off: ordinary values the same (30.46, 33.46, 26.46). A null-prototype { a, b } 39.46 to 33.46: the JS helper allocated 7 cells for each lookup (a RegExp and its match among them), the native function 1 (the string). A child whose name comes from a constructor on the chain 61.46 to 63.46.
Startup, 5 interleaved runs, median: bun -e 0 3,805,061 to 3,795,269 instructions (one binary varies by 22,117). First util.inspect({}) 24,675,097 to 24,646,603.
Self-review. Three reviews of the diff.
First: 13 concerns. Native functions get Function as in V8, one comment line for each function, a row for each word the C++ can return, rows for generator functions, ShadowRealm, bound functions, functions of another realm, functions that the Function constructor made, parsed data, the table of known differences, the landing order. The module namespace row, not taken then, is now a test.
Second: 26 concerns. Done: the chain before the type word, the end of the walk at an object that answers getPrototypeOf itself, getDirect in place of a property slot lookup, no word for a view of a resizable buffer, the try of formatRaw as its own PR, the rows in a fixture that Node.js runs, a row for each clause of the lookup that had none, sloppy arguments rows, the counts for each call, the JS walk margin, the speed with the JIT on, the real-package repro, the printers that are not changed.
After the third review, from the review bots: the walk checks the throw scope after materializeLazyProperties, a row of the compiled program that throws ends the run, and the tests of plain Bun pin the deferred namespace and a handle below a subclass for the Worker message.
Not taken: tracking issues for the printers and stand-ins that this PR does not change (the list is above) and a request for a named reviewer, which are a maintainer's call. A fix of the dev-server client printer and of the node:inspector description, which are other code paths with their own tests. One reviewer preferred to keep the kind of a function without the prototype bit (3 rows differ from Node.js in place of 9). The step went away whole, because no known program reaches it and util.inspect and util.types.isAsyncFunction: read the kind of a function from the engine #45735 is the one place that reads the kind.
Suites run with the debug build:test/js/node/util/ (util.test.js, custom-inspect.test.js, bun-inspect.test.ts, test-util-types.test.js, the node-inspect-tests), test/js/bun/util/inspect.test.js, inspect-error.test.js, test/js/node/assert/assert.test.cjs, assert.spec.ts, test/js/web/console/console-log.test.ts, test/js/node/worker_threads/worker_threads.test.ts, test/internal/source-lints, and the upstream files test-util-inspect-*.js, test-console-instance.js, test-console-group.js and test-worker-message-port-transfer-duplicate.js.

`internalGetConstructorName` in `inspect.js` read `val.constructor?.name`
and `Object.prototype.toString`, so it ran user getters and Proxy traps,
and it took any truthy `constructor.name` as the name. A getter that
throws made `util.inspect` throw.
The lookup is now a C++ host function in `UtilInspect.cpp`. It ports the
walk of the prototype chain and the word for a type from V8's
`GetConstructorHelper`, and reads own data properties only, inside a
`DisallowVMEntry` scope. V8 first asks for the constructor that made the
value. JSC does not record it, so the type of a built-in value and the
kind of a function stand in for it. A function receiver gets a name too.
`formatRaw` reads `Symbol.toStringTag` in a `try`, as Node.js does.
The duplicate-entry message of a `Worker` transfer list takes its name
from the same function.
The `ObjectPrototypeToString` capture of `inspect.js` has no reader left
and is deleted.
constutil=require("node:util");util.inspect({__proto__: null,getconstructor(){thrownewError("boom");}});// main: throws `boom`// Node.js v26.12.1 and this PR: [Object: null prototype] { constructor: [Getter] }// The `data` of a graphql-js result for the query `{ constructor: me { name { city }}}`,// and what qs.parse("constructor[name][city]=Paris", { plainObjects: true }) returns.util.format("%O",{__proto__: null,constructor: {__proto__: null,name: {__proto__: null,city: "Paris"}}});// main: TypeError: No default value// Node.js v26.12.1 and this PR: [Object: null prototype] { constructor: [Object: null prototype] { name: [Object: null prototype] { city: 'Paris' }}}
test/js/node/util/node-inspect-tests/internal-inspect.test.js fails on main (100 of 151 tests) and passes on this branch. The try around the Symbol.toStringTag read of formatRaw is #46414.
CI on 87ace74 (build 135146): 184 of 188 jobs passed, which is every Linux, Windows and macOS aarch64 lane. The 4 macOS x64 test jobs found no agent and expired three times, so they ran no test. They are scheduled again.

The change adds a native constructor-name lookup and uses it in util.inspect and duplicate worker transfer-list errors. Tests cover built-in and constructor names, prototype behavior, getter and Proxy behavior, formatting, and Node.js comparisons.
Adds a native binding that recognizes supported built-in and function names, checks tags and prototype-chain constructor names, and returns a fallback name.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked: the prototype walk under DisallowVMEntry (VMInquiry slots skip accessors and Proxy traps, so user code is not entered, and the walk terminates on JSC's acyclic getPrototypeDirect chain); the new worker_threads.ts call site, which only runs after typeof item === "object" so the non-object ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE path is unreachable there; and the try/catch around the Symbol.toStringTag read in formatRaw, which matches Node's behavior.
Extended reasoning...
The change replaces the JS internalGetConstructorName helper with a C++ host function in src/jsc/bindings/UtilInspect.cpp that walks the prototype chain with VMInquiry property slots, and wraps the toStringTag read in formatRaw with try/catch; the worker_threads duplicate-transfer error message is rewired to the same function. No security-sensitive surface is touched, but the inline findings record Node.js divergences in the walk order and subclass naming that a human should weigh.
The lookup of a constructor name now walks the prototype chain first.
It uses the word for the type only when the chain has no name. So an
instance of a subclass of a built-in keeps the name of its chain, as in
V8 and as before this branch.
JavaScriptCore does not record the constructor that made a value. The
type of a built-in value no longer stands in for it, because an instance
of a subclass has the same type. Only the kind of a function stands in.
The two lookups of the walk cannot throw, so they assert it. The rows
of the duplicate FileHandle test run concurrently.
…type
The lookup of a constructor name reads own data properties with
getDirect, which reads the structure of the object and nothing else.
The walk ends at an object that answers getPrototypeOf itself. The
prototype in the structure of the global of a node:vm context can be
stale, and import.meta hides its prototype.
A view of a resizable buffer has no type word, as in V8's class_name().
The `try` around the Symbol.toStringTag read of formatRaw is not part of
this change any more. It is a separate fix.
The rows of the test are in a fixture that Node.js runs too. One test
compares them with the Node.js version that Bun reports. New rows cover
each clause of the lookup.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):
🟡 src/js/internal/util/inspect.js — nit, pre-existing: users still get a throw from util.inspect when a Symbol.toStringTag getter throws, although the PR description lists that as fixed. The description's Fix bullet says formatRaw reads the tag in a try and gives util.inspect(require("bun:sqlite").Statement.prototype) as a repro that now prints {}, but src/js/internal/util/inspect.js:1294 still reads value[SymbolToStringTag] with no guard, so that call keeps throwing exactly as on the base branch. Fix: make the description match the merged code, either by dropping the try claim and the Statement.prototype repro, or by restoring the guarded read so every tag getter that throws is ignored as the description promises.
Why this was flagged
Calling util.inspect(require("bun:sqlite").Statement.prototype) goes through formatRaw at src/js/internal/util/inspect.js:1294, which evaluates value[SymbolToStringTag]. Statement.prototype carries the accessor at src/js/bun/sqlite.ts:245 whose body reads this.native, which at src/js/bun/sqlite.ts:254 touches the private field this.#raw on an object that has no such field, so JSC throws a TypeError. The diff does not touch line 1294, so this throw is the same before and after the change; the base branch behaves identically. The pull request description, however, states that formatRaw now reads the tag in a try and presents this exact repro as printing {} after the change, so a reader of the description expects a fix that is not in the diff. No safeguard applies: the native lookup in src/jsc/bindings/UtilInspect.cpp:252 only runs inside getConstructorName and getCtxStyle, not for the tag read at line 1294.
Verification: src/js/internal/util/inspect.js:1294 is still let tag = value[SymbolToStringTag]; with no try/catch; the diff touches nothing near 1294. src/js/bun/sqlite.ts:245-247 reads this.native and :253-255 returns this.#raw; on Statement.prototype there is no #raw brand, so the read throws TypeError on base and HEAD alike. The description's Fix bullet and {} repro row are not delivered by this diff.
On the finding outside the diff: the description changed a few minutes after the push of b97e7ce. It no longer says that formatRaw reads the tag in a try, and it has no Statement.prototype repro. That try is #46414 now. The landing-order note of this PR names the two rows that wait for it.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked that the prototype walk in src/jsc/bindings/UtilInspect.cpp is genuinely non-reentrant (getDirect/getPrototypeDirect only, under DisallowVMEntry, with the Proxy/vm-global/import.meta stop on overridesGetPrototype), that the new worker_threads call site only reaches the native function after the typeof item === "object" guard at src/js/node/worker_threads.ts:510 (so ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE cannot preempt the DataCloneError), and that $newCppFunction inside a function body expands to a runtime @ lazy(id) call in src/codegen/replacements.ts, so the non-top-level placement is fine.
Extended reasoning...
The change replaces the JS internalGetConstructorName in util.inspect with a C++ port of V8's GetConstructorHelper/class_name and reuses it for the worker_threads duplicate-transfer message, plus a large fixture table and new tests. It touches no auth/crypto surface; the security-relevant property is that the native walk never runs user getters or Proxy traps, which the code upholds. The prior round's request to run the chain walk before the type stand-in was addressed in the current revision, but the three inline findings (AOT structure caveat and two test nits) still warrant a human look, so this is not an approval.
…compiled
The lookup named a function by its kind unless JavaScriptCore had marked
the function as a prototype. The optimizing compiler removes an unused
Object.create(fn) together with that mark, so one program printed
Function in the interpreter and AsyncFunction later. The lookup now reads
the chain for a function as for any value, and Function is the word for
its type.
A function that a computed key names was made with no name. A getter
under such a key gave the name `get `. A function that the Function
constructor made keeps the name `anonymous`, as on main: an executable
cannot tell a compiled one from a function that is written with that
name.
In a `bun build --compile --aot` executable a class, its prototype
object and a function make their own properties when something first
looks for one, so the lookup asks for that before it reads the storage.
It takes the name of a compiled function from the runtime of the
compiler, takes a compiled generator object for a Generator, and reads
the tag of a compiled namespace with an inquiry that runs no code.
The table of built-ins describes jsFunctionGetConstructorName: it runs
no code, keeps nothing and only reads. Without a row the compiler took
the call for unknown code. LICENSE.md names V8 for the port.
Tests: two ahead-of-time programs that every run takes (the rows of the
fixture and compiled objects through util.inspect, and the message for a
duplicate transfer-list entry), rows for computed keys, for a class
whose Symbol.hasInstance answers false and for each function that
Node.js names by its kind, a probe for Node.js that cannot throw, the
whole output for a child of import.meta, and a namespace from a static
import.

I re-reviewed the latest push and found no new bugs; the earlier inline findings (AOT compiled-object properties, the function-kind stand-in, the unguarded node probe, the prefix-only import.meta assertion) are addressed in 989c98d. Because this changes what util.inspect prints for every user and the differsFromNode table records deliberate divergences from Node, a maintainer's look at that trade-off is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
The DisallowVMEntry walk in src/jsc/bindings/UtilInspect.cpp: getDirect/getPrototypeDirect reads, VMInquiry lookups and the AOT helpers (materializeLazyProperties, isModuleNamespace) match their existing call sites in bindings.cpp and SerializedScriptValue.cpp, and the non-AOT stubs in BunWithoutAOT.h cover the unguarded calls.
ThrowScope pairing: originalName and view are checked; the host function rejects non-objects through ERR::INVALID_ARG_TYPE and tail-calls via RELEASE_AND_RETURN.
Dead code: ObjectPrototypeToString is removed with its only user; the worker_threads caller now shares the native helper.
Extended reasoning...
The diff replaces the JS internalGetConstructorName in src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts with a 199-line C++ port of V8's GetConstructorName/class_name in src/jsc/bindings/UtilInspect.cpp, registers it in the AOT host-function table, rewires the worker_threads duplicate-transfer message to it, and adds a large fixture plus AOT programs and a Node comparison test. It touches no auth, crypto or injection surface; the security-relevant property is that the walk no longer runs user getters or Proxy traps, which the new tests pin. The hunt ran dry and the previous inline findings were all acted on in the latest commit, but the change is complex, alters user-visible util.inspect output for every caller, and ships a documented list of remaining divergences from Node, which is a judgment call for a maintainer rather than something to approve automatically.

Add stored output for the duplicate-entry names, or treat this as optional coverage.
This program checks names only through a comparison with a plain Bun run. A naming regression in Bun changes both outputs in the same way, so the runner cannot detect it. Storing an expected output file would freeze the names. Because worker_threads.test.ts already asserts the DataCloneError names for some cases, the gap is limited to the derived-prototype cases. This is added coverage for behavior that currently works.
Optional remedy: add a .expected.txt beside test/aot/programs/workers/a-duplicate-entry-of-a-transfer-list-is-named-by-its-class.ts. Record the plain Bun output for each of its four duplicate(...) calls. A later change to the constructor name then fails the AOT test.

Add a .expected.txt for this AOT program so its say labels have independent expected output.
Without an expected file, the runner compares the compiled output with a plain-Bun run of the same program. say catches every exception and prints name: message without rethrowing. An exception that occurs in both builds therefore matches the reference, and the test passes. The fixture rows that main.ts imports are also pinned to literal strings in internal-inspect.test.js. The labels that main.ts prints directly, such as namespace, namespace, past the depth, and deferred namespace, have no such independent check. The compiled-module namespace path is not covered by the dataNamespace test, which uses a JSON module.
Add test/aot/programs/builtin-modules/util-inspect-names-a-value-whose-chain-has-no-constructor.expected.txt, beside the companion .json file. Record the reviewed output of each label in it. The runner then compares the compiled output with that text instead of a plain-Bun run.

We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The walk does not check its throw scope after AOT lazy-property materialization, although it checks after other potentially failing operations. If materialization reports an exception, subsequent property reads may proceed with that exception pending.
Inspection may report a different failure or hit an exception-state assertion instead of promptly propagating the materialization error.
This can occur when: Materializing a lazy compiled property during inspection fails, for example because allocation runs out of memory.

The two programs follow the layout of test/aot on main: no file of
options beside a program and no list of programs that every run takes.
`--aot` does not compile a file that names ShadowRealm, so the two rows
of the fixture that need one are in a file of their own. The program
prints the other rows, and it ends on the first error: a row that throws
in plain Bun and in the executable alike no longer passes.
The lookup checks for an exception behind the call that makes the
properties of a compiled class or function.
Tests: the name of a deferred namespace, and the duplicate transfer-list
message for a handle below the prototype object of a subclass.

say catches every exception: done. say has no try now. A row that throws ends the run of plain Bun with an error, and test/aot/run-parallel.ts fails a program whose reference run does not end with 0.
Stored output for the two programs: not added. Since AOT: fixes for modules, classes and Workers, WebKit upgrade, shorter compiler docs #47129 the programs are in test/aot/parallel/, and that runner keeps an /* Output: */ comment only for a program that must differ from plain Bun (test/aot/run-parallel.ts:42-43). The names of plain Bun have literal assertions. internal-inspect.test.js has one for each fixture row and for the plain and the deferred namespace. worker_threads.test.ts has one for the FileHandle, constructor, tag and subclass cases of the Worker message.
This branch adds one native function to the table of built-ins. With one

Function.prototype. The row for the function does not matter: main with a
dummy $newCppFunction and no other change prints the same lines.

A bound function and a function of a ShadowRealm do not count, as in V8. For an object that is no Error it prints[object Object], and process: emit the two warnings of an unhandled rejection as Node does #45775 leaves that as it is.node:vmcontext with the constructor name of the sandbox ([object Foo]). Bun has no such step and prints[object Object].Measurements. The corpus, speed and

The step went away whole, because no known program reaches it and util.inspect andutil.types.isAsyncFunction: read the kind of a function from the engine #45735 is the one place that reads the kind.Suites run with the debug build:
