Problem

  • util.inspect prints the frames that an error shares with its cause twice. Node.js prints ... N lines matching cause stack trace ... instead.
  • identicalSequenceRange (src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts:1794) calls ArrayPrototypeIndexOf.$call(a[i]). That runs indexOf on the string a[i] with no search value and finds no frame.
  • Regression from Pass more node tests in util and readline #16425 (Bun 1.2.0). Bun 1.1.45 prints the line.

Fix

  • The call is now ArrayPrototypeIndexOf.$call(b, a[i]), the same search as Node's line.
  • getStackFrames replaces the lines with ArrayPrototypeSplice.$call. The fix makes that line run again, and a program can replace frames.splice.
  • ArrayPrototypeIndexOf has its plain type again. Compile TypeScript to machine code ahead of time: bun build --compile --aot #45631 widened it to pass the type check, which now rejects the old call (TS2554).
  • Verified: test/js/node/util/node-inspect-tests/internal-inspect.test.js. 10 of 12 new cases fail on main. 11 pass unchanged under Node.js v26.3.0. Notes list the other suites.

Background

  • identicalSequenceRange(a, b) returns the first run of four or more lines that a and b share. getStackFrames replaces the lines inside that run with one line.
  • Considered a map of first positions: an n + m search, but the usual call (10 frames, shared tail) takes 12% more instructions.

Downsides

  • The text changes for an error that shares four or more frames with its cause. A snapshot with every frame fails.
  • Two stacks with nothing in common cost n × m string comparisons, as in Node.js. At 1,000 frames each a call takes 140,480,707 instructions, was 18,946,618. At the default 10 frames it takes 58,125, was 160,006.
Notes

Repro

const util = require("node:util");
function inner() {
  throw new Error("cause");
}
function middle() {
  try {
    inner();
  } catch (cause) {
    throw new Error("outer", { cause });
  }
}
function a1() {
  middle();
}
function a2() {
  a1();
}
function a3() {
  a2();
}
function a4() {
  a3();
}
try {
  a4();
} catch (error) {
  console.log(util.inspect(error));
}

main prints the frames a1 to <anonymous> in both errors. This branch prints:

Error: outer
    at middle (/tmp/repro/notes-repro.cjs:9:15)
    at a1 (/tmp/repro/notes-repro.cjs:13:3)
    ... 3 lines matching cause stack trace ...
    at <anonymous> (/tmp/repro/notes-repro.cjs:25:3) {
  [cause]: Error: cause
      at inner (/tmp/repro/notes-repro.cjs:3:13)
      at middle (/tmp/repro/notes-repro.cjs:7:5)
      at a1 (/tmp/repro/notes-repro.cjs:13:3)
      at a2 (/tmp/repro/notes-repro.cjs:16:3)
      at a3 (/tmp/repro/notes-repro.cjs:19:3)
      at a4 (/tmp/repro/notes-repro.cjs:22:3)
      at <anonymous> (/tmp/repro/notes-repro.cjs:25:3)
}

Node.js v26.3.0 prints the same shape: middle, a1, ... 6 lines matching cause stack trace ..., then its last frames. Its documentation of error.cause shows the line. nodejs/node#41002 added it.

util.format and new console.Console().log format an error with the same function. The global console.log, Bun.inspect and the printer of an uncaught error (the subject of #32343) use Bun's native formatter and do not change.

How the call broke

The type check

  • With const ArrayPrototypeIndexOf = Array.prototype.indexOf; and the old call, bun src/codegen/check-types-of-modules.ts reports src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts(1792,39): error TS2554: Expected 2-3 arguments, but got 1. CI runs that check in the lint workflow.
  • With the new call it reports no error. The other call of ArrayPrototypeIndexOf in the file, in removeDuplicateErrorKeys, has both arguments.
  • A search of src/js for a .$call with only a this value on a method that needs an argument (indexOf, includes, push, has, get, set and 29 more) finds this line and one call of a property getter.

The splice

  • Node's getStackFrames calls frames.splice(...) (inspect.js#L1784), and so did this file. With only the first commit of this PR, a program that replaces Array.prototype.splice has its function called for each collapsed error.
  • The line is now ArrayPrototypeSplice.$call(frames, ...), with the function that the module captures when it loads. A new test replaces Array.prototype.splice with a function that throws. Node.js fails that test, because it calls the replacement.
  • keys.splice(0, value.length) in getBoxedBase is the same kind of call, as in Node.js. It ran before this PR, and this PR does not change it.

Compared with Node.js

  • 11 of the 12 new test cases pass unchanged under Node.js v26.3.0 and v26.12.1, with bun:test replaced by a shim of 58 lines over node:assert. The twelfth replaces Array.prototype.splice, see "The splice".
  • 5,000 errors with random stacks of at most ten frames print the same text on this branch, on Node.js v26.3.0 and v26.12.1, and on Bun 1.1.45. 1,624 of them collapse. Half are printed with colors.
  • 4,000 chains of one to three errors print the same text on this branch and on Node.js v26.3.0. They have four kinds of error, causes that are not errors, an object, an array or a Map around them, and random colors, depth, compact and breakLength. Node.js v26.12.1 prints 58 of them differently, all with compact: true and breakLength: Infinity. That difference is not in the collapsed line, and util.inspect: print numbers, errors, tags and getters as Node.js v26.12.1 does #47303 covers it.
  • Node.js has no test for this line in test/parallel/test-util-inspect.js. Its test is test/message/util-inspect-error-cause.js, which compares the output of a process with a pattern file. Bun does not run that kind of test.

Measurements

Release builds with LTO on linux-x64, main f7607a3 against this branch. Instructions are user-mode counts from perf_event_open for the whole process tree. A value per call is (I(n) - I(n/4)) / (3n/4), the median of 5 runs, with the two builds run in turn. Every stack is assigned, so the input is fixed.

Instructions for each util.inspect(error) call, main → branch:

Error JIT Interpreter (BUN_JSC_useJIT=0)
no cause, 10 frames 18,796 → 18,714 (-0.4%) 37,232 → 37,237 (+0.0%)
cause, 10 frames each, none shared 160,006 → 58,125 (-63.7%) 219,204 → 121,875 (-44.4%)
cause, 10 frames each, 8 shared 162,514 → 49,420 (-69.6%) 221,897 → 111,810 (-49.6%)
cause, 100 frames each, none shared 1,832,678 → 1,571,161 (-14.3%) 1,933,818 → 2,033,434 (+5.2%)
cause, 1,000 frames each, none shared 18,946,618 → 140,480,707 (+641%) 19,508,447 → 177,335,477 (+809%)
cause, 1,000 frames each, 998 shared 19,425,303 → 1,927,047 (-90.1%) 19,965,036 → 2,381,444 (-88.1%)
cause, one frame 999 times in both 18,489,831 → 1,885,879 (-89.8%) 19,030,945 → 2,358,425 (-87.6%)
  • For the row without a cause the helper is not called, and both builds run the same code. The medians differ by 0.4%.
  • main walks the characters of each line of the outer error through the generic path of indexOf. That cost grows with the count of frames: 10 times the frames take 10 times the instructions.
  • This branch compares each line of the outer error with the lines of the cause until it finds one. Two stacks with nothing in common take n × m comparisons: 10 times the frames take 89 times the instructions. Node's loop is the same, and so was Bun's until 1.1.45.
  • A stack has more than 10 frames only if the program raises Error.stackTraceLimit or assigns stack. A wrapper made in a catch block shares its last frames with its cause, and then the search stops at the first shared frame.
  • Binary: text 138,087,639 → 138,087,663 B. The text of internal/util/inspect.js is 76,286 → 76,310 B.

A map of first positions, measured and not taken

  • The variant: const firstPositions = new SafeMap(); for (let i = b.length - 1; i >= 0; i--) firstPositions.set(b[i], i);, then firstPositions.get(a[i]) in place of the indexOf call. It prints the same text for the 9,000 random errors above.
  • Instructions for each call with the JIT, this branch against the variant. Both builds of this table still call frames.splice, so they differ only in the search:
Error This branch With the map
cause, 10 frames each, 8 shared 49,389 55,512 (+12.4%)
cause, 10 frames each, none shared 58,008 55,752 (-3.9%)
cause, 100 frames each, none shared 1,570,633 321,534 (-79.5%)
cause, 1,000 frames each, none shared 140,490,968 2,964,734 (-97.9%)
cause, 1,000 frames each, 998 shared 1,924,316 2,526,822 (+31.3%)
  • The map is cheaper only where the two stacks share nothing. A wrapper and its cause share their last frames, and there the map costs more. It also makes one Map for each inspected error with a cause.
  • So this PR keeps Node's line. The variant is a change of 4 lines if a maintainer prefers it.

Suites

  • Debug build with ASAN: test/js/node/util (620 pass), test/js/bun/util/inspect-error.test.js, test/js/bun/util/inspect.test.js, test/js/node/assert, test/js/node/console, test/js/bun/console and test/js/web/console (788 pass). One parseArgs stress test in test/js/node/util takes 8 s on the debug build of this container and hits the 5 s limit. This PR does not touch it.
  • The 67 files of test/js/node/test/parallel named test-util*, test-console*, test-assert*, test-error-*, test-repl-options.js and test-promises-unhandled-rejections.js pass.
  • test/aot/runtime-use-of-util-inspect.test.ts, test/aot/small-programs-stay-closed.test.ts, test/aot/builtins/classes-with-inspect-method.test.ts and test/aot/runtime-use-of-built-in-code.test.ts pass, each run alone. An executable built with bun build --compile --aot prints the collapsed text too.
  • test/internal/source-lints (194 pass). bun src/codegen/check-types-of-modules.ts reports no error. bun fmt --check passes for both files.

identicalSequenceRange ran indexOf on the string a[i] with no search
value, so it found no shared frame. It now searches the frames of the
cause for a[i], as Node.js does.

ArrayPrototypeIndexOf has the type of Array.prototype.indexOf again, so
the type check rejects a call without a search element.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change corrects shared stack-frame matching for nested error causes. It also uses the captured Array.prototype.splice method when replacing matching frames. Tests cover cause shapes, nested chains, and formatter output.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

LGTM — a one-argument fix that makes identicalSequenceRange search the cause's frames as Node does; the inline note on frames.splice is a pre-existing nit, not a blocker.

Extended reasoning...

The change is a single line in src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts (passing b, a[i] to ArrayPrototypeIndexOf.$call instead of a[i] alone) plus dropping a widened type annotation whose only other call site at line 1882 already passes two arguments, and no ahead-of-time twin of inspect.ts exists. The loop bounds and splice arithmetic are unchanged and match Node's lib/internal/util/inspect.js, and I hand-traced every new test.each case plus the thrown-error case through the helper (noting getStackFrames receives frames without the header line) and each produces the expected output. It touches no security-sensitive surface; the formatter runs on userland error stacks only. Neither changed file is covered by .github/CODEOWNERS, there are no outstanding reviewer objections, and the new tests exercise util.inspect, util.format and console.Console with the 3-vs-4 shared-frame boundary and colors on, so the fix is small, self-contained and well covered.

Comment thread src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts Resolved

The fix makes this line run again. It called frames.splice, which a

LGTM — the second commit addresses the splice nit from the earlier pass, and the fix now matches Node's identicalSequenceRange/getStackFrames line for line.

What was reviewed:

  • Traced each test.each case through the fixed identicalSequenceRange (first-match indexOf, rest > 3, len > 3, splice(offset + 1, len - 2)) — every expected string follows from the algorithm, including the duplicated-frame and last-three-frames cases.
  • Checked the only other ArrayPrototypeIndexOf call site (removeDuplicateErrorKeys, line 1882) still type-checks with the narrowed declaration; no src/js/ahead-of-time/ twin of inspect.ts exists.
  • The Console.log test goes through kWriteToConsole with ignoreErrors: false, which only calls stream.write; the splice-replacement test restores the prototype in finally.
  • Non-blocking: keys.splice(0, value.length) at inspect.ts:1701 (boxed String path) is a pre-existing direct prototype call of the same shape; untouched here and out of scope.
Extended reasoning...

The change is three lines in src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts (pass b to the captured indexOf, drop the widened type annotation, use the captured ArrayPrototypeSplice) plus ~236 lines of tests in test/js/node/util/node-inspect-tests/internal-inspect.test.js. It touches no security-sensitive surface; the only hostile-environment concern (user-replaced Array.prototype.splice) is now handled by the primordial and covered by a test. The fix is a direct port of Node's lib/internal/util/inspect.js control flow, the expected outputs trace correctly through the algorithm by hand, the prior inline nit was addressed in commit 831eec7, and no CODEOWNERS entry covers these paths. Small, self-contained, and well tested, so a human look is not required.

Avoid a linear scan of b for every entry of a.

identicalSequenceRange calls ArrayPrototypeIndexOf.$call(b, a[i]) for each entry of a. Disjoint stacks cost about n × m comparisons per caused error. Precompute the first index of each entry of b in a Map so each lookup takes constant time. Keep the first-match semantics and the -1 result.

Review comment at @src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts at line 1792:
Update identicalSequenceRange to avoid rescanning b for each entry of a:
precompute each value’s first index in b and use that lookup while preserving
first-match behavior and returning -1 when absent.

On the follow-up about the linear scan of b: I measured that variant before I opened the PR. The numbers are in the PR notes under "A map of first positions, measured and not taken". Instructions for each util.inspect call with the JIT, on release builds:

Error indexOf (this PR) Map of first positions
cause, 10 frames each, 8 shared 49,389 55,512 (+12.4%)
cause, 1,000 frames each, 998 shared 1,924,316 2,526,822 (+31.3%)
cause, 100 frames each, none shared 1,570,633 321,534 (-79.5%)
cause, 1,000 frames each, none shared 140,490,968 2,964,734 (-97.9%)
  • The map is cheaper only where the two stacks share nothing. A wrapper and its cause share their last frames, and there the search stops at the first shared frame.
  • A stack has more than 10 frames only if the program raises Error.stackTraceLimit.
  • Node.js has the same loop (inspect.js#L1614).

So this PR keeps Node's line. The map is a change of 4 lines if a maintainer prefers it.

On the related issue: #32343 is about the printer of an uncaught error. That printer is native, and this PR does not change its output.
