bun test: print a mocked module with util.inspect and util.format("%s") again - #47788
Regression from #44833, which is in no release. No issue.
Problem
util.inspect(ns) of a mocked module throws AssertionError: handleMaxCallStackSize assertion failed: AssertionError if a factory getter throws (not a ReferenceError).
vi.mock(x, () => import(y)): it throws No "constructor" export is defined on the mock, and %s throws that for toString. %s of an object factory prints [object Module]. Bun 1.4.2 prints the module.
formatNamespaceObject (src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts:2216) asserts a ReferenceError. Since bun test: Vitest compatibility #44833 reads reach the factory's object.
Fix
formatNamespaceObject prints <Inspection threw (message)> for an export whose descriptor read throws.
internalGetConstructorName reads constructor in a try, takes only a string name, and none for a namespace object.
hasBuiltInToString ignores a toString that a mocked module lacks or inherits through the factory's object.
Verified: test/js/bun/test/mock/mock-module.test.ts and util-inspect-namespace.test.mjs (Node.js v26.3.0 passes it). Main fails 7 tests. Self-reviewed: 15 concerns raised, 15 addressed.
Background
A mocked module's namespace object (import * as ns) reads each export from the factory's object, so a read can call a getter. A vi.mock() mock throws for a missing name.
Instructions per call, JIT off: util.inspect(ns) +114 of 125,300, an object without a constructor +40, util.format("%s", object) +32. Others: +0 (noise 20). Release text: +889 B.
Prints still call the getter. Bun.inspect(ns) still leaves out a key whose getter throws. A test.each title with %s still prints [object Module].
Notes
Repro (bun test, main a4c3a5e). cfg.js is export const value = 1;.
import{mock,test}from"bun:test";importutilfrom"node:util";mock.module("./cfg.js",()=>({getvalue(){thrownewError("from the factory getter");},plain: 1}));test("print",async()=>{constns=awaitimport("./cfg.js");console.log(util.inspect(ns));});
a mocked module printed in an import cycle, before its factory returned
throws ReferenceError: Cannot access 'constructor' before initialization.
{ }
Only an error that is not a ReferenceError reached the assertion. A getter that reads a const declared below a hoisted vi.mock() call throws a ReferenceError and already printed <uninitialized>.
Changes for values that are not mocked. Each row is a test that Node.js v26.3.0 passes too. Node.js v24.0.0, v24.22.2 and v25.9.0 pass the file with the Proxy row skipped.

The output of 112 prints of other values (14 values, 8 printers) is the same bytes as on main. None of them has a constructor export, a constructor.name that is no string, or null at index 0 of a Proxy target.
Landing order.#46111 replaces internalGetConstructorName with a native lookup. The constructor guard here is a stopgap until then. Whichever lands second takes the side of #46111 in src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts and keeps the tests of this pull request. #47303 gives the getters branch of formatProperty the same message rule as formatNamespaceObject has here, and turns the wrapper at inspect.ts:1592 into throw err. The rows above that quote handleMaxCallStackSize assertion failed describe main until then. #38652 rewrites the Proxy lines of formatValue. #47815 pins oven-sh/WebKit#990 and changes the three <Inspection threw> assertions of the mocked namespace object to [Getter].
Why Node's try stays around formatProperty(). Node.js v26.3.0 prints <uninitialized> when a ReferenceError comes from any step of the property, for example from the [util.inspect.custom] function of the export's value (lib/internal/util/inspect.js:2268-2291). Another error from that function fails the assertion in Node.js and here. Three tests of the new file hold that. They pass on main and in Node.js.
Which toString errors are ignored. The error of the toString read is ignored only if the value is a module namespace object and "toString" in value is false. Only a mocked module throws for a name that it does not have: a vi.mock() mock whose factory did not return the name, and a mocked module whose factory has not returned yet. Node.js throws the error of a toString getter, and the ReferenceError of an export that is not initialized. Both still throw.
The text of <Inspection threw (...)>. It is the message of the thrown value, read in a try, and null or undefined for those values. The getters branch of formatProperty prints the same form. Node.js v26 prints the formatted thrown value there (nodejs/node#60684).
What this does not change.
The read of a mocked export still calls the factory's getter: for a descriptor lookup, for Object.hasOwn(), for for...in and for every print. Vitest 5.0.3 and Jest 30.5.2 print [Getter] and call nothing. The engine answers [[GetOwnProperty]] of such a namespace object with source->hasProperty() and source->get() before Bun's code is asked. bun test: describe a mocked module's export without calling its getter #47815 is the draft for that part.
For the same reason the first constructor lookup of util.inspect (a descriptor lookup) still calls a constructor getter of the factory's object, and throws what it throws.
test.each([[ns]])("%s", fn) prints the title with has_builtin_to_string in src/runtime/test_runner/jest.rs. It still gives [object Module] for an object factory and TypeError: Type error for a jest.fn() factory.
util.format("%j", ns) and util.format("%d", ns) of a vi.mock() mock still throw No "toJSON" export and No "valueOf" export. Vitest throws the same.
Measurements. Release builds of a4c3a5e and of 946009f. User-mode instructions with perf_event_open, 200,000 calls, median of 7 interleaved rounds, main measured two times.

…nnot read
formatNamespaceObject reads the property descriptor apart from the rest.
If that read throws an error that is not a ReferenceError, the export
prints as <Inspection threw (message)>. It failed an assertion before.
In bun test, the export of a mocked module can be a getter of the object
the mock's factory returned, and the getter can throw.
internalGetConstructorName reads `constructor` in a try and does not take
the name from an export of a module namespace object. The read throws for
a mocked module whose factory did not return that name, and for a binding
that is not initialized.
How I reproduced it, on a debug build of main (a4c3a5e). cfg.js is export const value = 1;. Run bun test ./mock.test.js:
import{mock,test}from"bun:test";importutilfrom"node:util";mock.module("./cfg.js",()=>({getvalue(){thrownewError("from the factory getter");},plain: 1}));test("print",async()=>{constns=awaitimport("./cfg.js");console.log(util.inspect(ns));});
Main throws AssertionError: handleMaxCallStackSize assertion failed: AssertionError. This branch prints { value: <Inspection threw (from the factory getter)>, plain: 1 }.
CI: in builds 137059, 137172, 137187 and 137192 each failure is in test/aot or in test/bundler/compile-aot-size.test.ts, or it passed on a retry. All but one of them also fail on main. The one is test/aot/heap-limit.test.ts, an out-of-memory crash of a compiled program on one lane of build 137172. No failure is in a file that this pull request touches. Build 137192 is the build of the current head (d45eb1c).

Walkthrough
Inspection of module namespace objects now formats exports from property descriptors and handles errors during export formatting and property lookup. Proxy display distinguishes a null-target proxy from a revoked proxy. Tests cover mocked, VM, and imported namespaces.

Summary
Format namespace exports and inspection errors src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts, test/js/bun/test/mock/mock-module.test.ts, test/js/node/util/node-inspect-tests/util-inspect-namespace.test.mjs, test/js/node/util/node-inspect-tests/namespace-with-uninitialized-toString-fixture.mjs
Namespace exports are formatted from property descriptors. A ReferenceError during inspection renders as <uninitialized>. Other accepted errors render an inspection-error marker. Tests cover throwing exports, re-exports, and uninitialized toString exports.
Handle constructor and toString lookup src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts, test/js/bun/test/mock/mock-module.test.ts, test/js/node/util/node-inspect-tests/util-inspect-namespace.test.mjs
Reads of toString and constructor.name are guarded. Tests cover missing exports, throwing getters, formatting, and cyclic namespace inspection.
Distinguish null-target and revoked proxies src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts, test/js/node/util/node-inspect-tests/util-inspect-namespace.test.mjs
A proxy with a null target is treated as revoked only when proxy display is enabled. Tests distinguish it from a revoked proxy.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):
🟣 src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts — Pre-existing, same class as this fix: util.format("%s", ns) of a vi.mock'd module still throws or prints [object Module] instead of the inspected namespace Node prints. hasBuiltInToString reads value.toString at src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts:2681, a [[Get]] on the namespace that runs the mock's lookup: for vi.mock(x, () => import(y)) or a null-prototype factory object it throws No "toString" export is defined on the mock, and for a plain factory object it finds Object.prototype.toString so %s prints [object Module]. Fix: treat a value for which isModuleNamespaceObject is true as having a built-in toString (return true before the reads at 2681-2694), or guard those reads like internalGetConstructorName now does, so %s falls through to inspect() as in Node.
Why this was flagged
In bun test, with vi.mock("./dep", () => import("./other")) and import * as ns from "./dep", calling util.format("%s", ns) reaches the case 115 branch at src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts:2776, which calls hasBuiltInToString(ns). At src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts:2681 typeof value.toString performs [Get] on the namespace; its live exports source is the JSModuleMock, whose getOwnPropertySlot (src/jsc/bindings/BunPlugin.cpp:1959-2015) finds no toString on the namespace of ./other and, because the mock is of Vitest and the method type is Get, throws No "toString" export is defined on the mock of "./dep".... Node prints [Module: null prototype] { a: 1 } for the same call because a namespace has no toString and 2683 returns true. The base branch behaves identically; this PR fixes the sibling reads in formatNamespaceObject (2215) and internalGetConstructorName (2976) but not this one.
Verification: src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts:2776 (case 115, %s) calls hasBuiltInToString(tempArg) for any object; line 2681 if (typeof value.toString !== "function") is a [[Get]] of "toString" on the namespace. The base branch fails by the same route and this change does not touch it.
…cannot be read
hasBuiltInToString reads `toString` in a try. For a mocked module whose
factory did not return that name, format("%s", ns) threw the mock's
error. It now prints the namespace object, as for a module that is not
mocked.
The reference run of util-inspect-namespace.test.mjs needs Node.js 24 or
later, which parses `await using`.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the rest of the new hasBuiltInToString path: the value[SymbolToPrimitive] read after the guarded toString read cannot reach a mock factory getter (symbol keys are never exports), so a namespace falls through to return true cleanly. A factory getter that throws an ordinary ReferenceError printing as <uninitialized> matches what Node does for any ReferenceError, so that is not a regression from this change.
Extended reasoning...
The new push adds a try/catch around the toString read in hasBuiltInToString in src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts, alongside the earlier formatNamespaceObject and internalGetConstructorName changes, plus test additions. It touches no security-sensitive surface; it is node:util inspect/format output for mocked module namespace objects. Two confirmed inline findings are posted (the toString guard is not scoped to namespace objects and diverges from Node for ordinary objects, and multi-line justification comments), and the earlier inline comments on the constructor read ordering remain unaddressed in this push, so a human look is still warranted.
…d module
The previous commit made `util.format("%s", value)` ignore each error of
the `toString` read. Node.js throws that error, and so does `main`.
Now `hasBuiltInToString` ignores the error only for a module namespace
object that has no `toString` export. Only a mocked module of `vi.mock()`
throws for such a read. A `toString` getter of an ordinary object throws
its error again. An uninitialized `toString` export throws its
ReferenceError again, as in Node.js.

Guard the namespace descriptor branch in getConstructorName.

Guard the namespace descriptor branch in getConstructorName.
The constructor export can still name a module namespace object. getConstructorName checks the namespace's own constructor descriptor before the fallback, so the exclusion in internalGetConstructorName does not cover this path. This path predates the PR. Skip the descriptor name when the object is a module namespace object, so [Module: null prototype] is printed.

Update the own-constructor-descriptor branch in getConstructorName to skip
returning the descriptor-derived name when val is a module namespace object. Let
the existing fallback produce the [Module: null prototype] representation, while
preserving descriptor handling for other objects.

Beyond the inline nit, I checked the narrowed catch in hasBuiltInToString from 84b1439: it rethrows for any non-namespace object and for a namespace that has a toString key (the self-importing fixture covers the uninitialized-export case), so Node's error contract for ordinary objects is kept. I also confirmed src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts has no ahead-of-time twin needing the same edit, and that the described flag still trips the assertion for a non-ReferenceError thrown after the descriptor read, matching Node's formatNamespaceObject.
Extended reasoning...
The change edits three functions in Bun's node:util inspect builtin (formatNamespaceObject, hasBuiltInToString, internalGetConstructorName) so mocked module namespaces with throwing or missing exports print instead of throwing, and adds Bun-only output text <Inspection threw (...)> that diverges from Node for a Bun-specific case. It touches no security-sensitive surface. The third commit addressed the earlier feedback about swallowing toString read errors for ordinary objects; the remaining open point (reading constructor before the namespace check) was optional. The new user-facing placeholder format and the bot authorship are why a maintainer should still look.
The assertion compared one fragment of the text. Now it compares all
lines of the namespace object.
Also format a mocked module with `%s` before its factory has returned.
Answers to the review comments that are not on a line:
toString read in hasBuiltInToString: fixed in 84b1439. The error of the read is ignored only for a module namespace object that has no toString export. A toString getter of an ordinary object throws its error again. An export named toString that is not initialized throws its ReferenceError again, as in Node.js v26.3.0. The test format() with %s throws the error of a toString that it cannot read holds both cases in Bun and in Node.js.
Descriptor branch of getConstructorName: no change. That branch takes the name only if the value is an instance of the function (isInstanceof(tmp, descriptorValue)). A namespace object is an instance of no export. The test an export named constructor does not name the namespace object holds this in Bun and in Node.js.

I re-reviewed the three follow-up pushes (9b291c6, 84b1439, c22ba00) and found no bugs; the earlier nits on the %O assertion, the unscoped toString catch and the comment length are addressed in the current diff. Because this changes util.inspect/util.format semantics in a hot-path builtin and deliberately leaves one path open (a throwing constructor getter still reaches the unguarded descriptor read in getConstructorName, as the description notes), a human look is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
formatNamespaceObject: the described flag keeps Node's ReferenceError assertion for errors thrown inside formatProperty, and passing desc through does not change the undefined-descriptor fallback.
hasBuiltInToString: "toString" in value on a namespace object uses the export list, so an uninitialized real export still rethrows (covered by the self-importing fixture) while a mock without the export prints.
The new node:test file is runnable under real Node via nodeExeAtLeast and asserts exact strings or anchored regexes; subprocess pipes are drained with Promise.all.
Extended reasoning...
The PR touches src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts in three functions (formatNamespaceObject, hasBuiltInToString, internalGetConstructorName) to keep util.inspect/util.format from throwing on mocked module namespace objects whose export reads throw, plus 177 lines of tests in mock-module.test.ts and a new node:test file that also runs under real Node. It touches no security-sensitive surface (no auth, crypto, or I/O), but it is node:* compat code on a hot path with a deliberate divergence (a bare catch around the constructor read, mirroring Node's non-throwing native GetConstructorName) and an acknowledged remaining throw path in getConstructorName. No CODEOWNERS entry covers these files, there is no CHANGES_REQUESTED review, and the hunt ran dry; the decision to defer rather than approve rests on the semantic change to inspect output and the partial-fix caveat, which a maintainer should weigh.

Assert the complete %O output, including the text before {.
Line 3042 uses toEndWith, so the text before the opening { is not checked. A change to that text would not fail this test. The commit message describes this check as a comparison of the complete output. An exact assertion on the full string would match that intent.
The changed <Inspection threw ...> and <uninitialized> behavior is not in the unchecked prefix, so this adds coverage for existing formatting rather than closing a gap in the new behavior.

About the %O assertion at mock-module.test.ts:3042: no change.
The text before { is the name that Bun gives a namespace object (Module <[Object: null prototype] {}> [Module]). This pull request does not change that name for this object. Each assertion of the block leaves it out with toEndWith, so a later change to that name does not have to touch these tests. The assertion holds each line of the object, from { to the end.
`util.format("%s", ns)` prints a mocked module whose factory returned an
object or a function. The namespace object reports the `toString` that
the factory's object inherits as its own, so `%s` called it. That gave
`[object Module]`, or a `TypeError` for a `jest.fn()` factory. Bun 1.4.2
prints the namespace object.
`<Inspection threw (...)>` reads the message of what the getter threw in
a try. A value whose `message` cannot be read made `util.inspect()` fail
the assertion again.
`formatValue` reads index 0 of the details of a Proxy only with
`showProxy`, as Node.js does. Without that option the details are the
target. A target with `null` at index 0 printed `<Revoked Proxy>`, and a
target that is a `vi.mock()` module threw `No "0" export`.
`internalGetConstructorName` takes the `name` of a constructor only if
it is a string, as Node.js does.
…ring`
The rule runs only for a value that has its own `toString`. As an
expression in `hasBuiltInToString` it made the frame of that function
larger for each call: +55 instructions for each `util.format("%s",
object)` with the JIT off. A function of its own costs nothing until it
is called.
On main the name comes from the constructor of the factory's object:
`Object <...>` for an object and `Function <...>` for a function. The
name is `Module`, as in Bun 1.4.2.

util.inspect: print an export of a module namespace object that it cannot read
bun test: print a mocked module with util.inspect and util.format("%s") again

Correction to my comment about the %O assertion. I wrote that this pull request does not change the name before { for that object. That is wrong for a mock whose factory returns an object or a function.
Main prints Object <[Object: null prototype] {}> [Module] for an object factory and Function <...> [Module] for a function factory.
This pull request prints Module <...> [Module] for both, as Bun 1.4.2 does.
The test the constructor of the factory's object does not name the mocked module (c3aa000) now holds that name with /^\[?Module\b/. The pull request body lists the names that change.
Node.js 24 and 25 print `<Revoked Proxy>` for `new Proxy([null], {})`.
Node.js v26.0.0 reads index 0 of the details only with `showProxy`. The
file runs under each Node.js from v24.0.0 on: with v24.22.2 or v25.9.0
on PATH, the test `all tests pass in Node.js` failed.

This run found no new bugs, and the latest push (d45eb1c, skipping the Proxy row under Node.js before v26) addresses the last point I raised; since the change alters util.inspect output for some non-mocked values and the description ties its landing order to #46111, #47303 and #38652, a maintainer's look is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
formatNamespaceObject: the descriptor read moved ahead of formatProperty with described gating the assertion; desc falls through to the old lookup when undefined, and the <Inspection threw (...)> text tolerates null, primitives and a throwing message getter.
hasBuiltInToString / isToStringThatAMockInherits: the swallowed read error is limited to namespace objects lacking the toString name, and the own-toString short-circuit only treats the exact Object.prototype.toString / Function.prototype.toString on a namespace without a toString export as built-in; non-namespace objects keep the old path.
internalGetConstructorName and the showProxy-gated <Revoked Proxy> check: fall back to the Object.prototype.toString tag as before; all new call sites use captured primordials with $call, and there is no AOT twin of inspect.ts to mirror.
Extended reasoning...
The diff changes src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts (+48/-8) in formatValue's revoked-proxy check, formatNamespaceObject, hasBuiltInToString and internalGetConstructorName, and adds tests in test/js/bun/test/mock/mock-module.test.ts plus a new Node-compat test file and fixture under test/js/node/util/node-inspect-tests/. It touches no authentication, crypto or input-parsing surface; the hostile-userland concern for builtin modules is met with captured primordials and $call. The change is small but subtle: it alters user-visible output for non-mocked values (an export named constructor, a Proxy over [null], a throwing constructor getter) and the author names three other open PRs whose landing order interacts with it, which is why a human look is still suggested rather than approval. All earlier inline threads from this bot were either replied to by the author or addressed by later commits, the last one by d45eb1c.

formatProperty(). Node.js v26.3.0 prints<uninitialized>when aReferenceErrorcomes from any step of the property, for example from the[util.inspect.custom]function of the export's value (lib/internal/util/inspect.js:2268-2291). Another error from that function fails the assertion in Node.js and here. Three tests of the new file hold that. They pass on main and in Node.js.Which
toStringerrors are ignored. The error of thetoStringread is ignored only if the value is a module namespace object and"toString" in valueis false. Only a mocked module throws for a name that it does not have: avi.mock()mock whose factory did not return the name, and a mocked module whose factory has not returned yet. Node.js throws the error of atoStringgetter, and theReferenceErrorof an export that is not initialized. Both still throw. The text of
