dev server: console forwarding does not throw into or hang the page - #47937
With development: { console: true }, the page's console.log(new Proxy(new Map(), {})) throws TypeError: Method get Map.prototype.size called on incompatible receiver #<Map>.
Page code that logs while the forwarder runs it throws RangeError: Maximum call stack size exceeded or hangs.
Cause: no catch in the console wrappers (src/runtime/bake/hmr-runtime-client.ts:340) or formatValue (src/runtime/bake/client/inspect.ts:74).
Fix
The formatter catches per value and per entry: { a: [threw while printing], b: 2 }. The wrappers catch the rest, except the browser's own call.
The wrappers count the console calls in progress and forward only while the count is at most 2.
Verified: test/bake/dev/esm.test.ts (4 new tests fail on main), plus html, hot, bundle.
Self-reviewed: 23 concerns raised, 21 addressed. Not done: a real-browser test, a line budget (Notes).
Background
A wrapper runs the browser's own console.log, formats in the page, then sends on the HMR socket.
Each step runs page code that can log: an index getter in Chrome's console, a getter or trap in the format, a replaced send.
Considered a count in websocketInspect: it misses calls from inside the browser's own call. A formatter that runs no page code changes some text (Notes).
Downsides
A property that throws printed undefined, now [threw while printing].
A console call three calls deep is not forwarded. A value that logs itself prints [Circular].
Per call: about +40 instructions (V8), +110 (JavaScriptCore). bake.client.js: +344 B raw, +93 B zstd-19.
Notes
Probe corpus
80 values went through the real if (config.console) block with the real inspect.ts, once with console.log and once with console.error (Node 26.3).

Text that changes
88 ordinary values (primitives, objects, arrays, classes, Map, Set, Date, RegExp, errors, typed arrays) print the same text as on main, under Node 26.3 and under Bun.
Of the 46 corpus values that print on main, 4 read differently. Three had a property that throws and printed key: undefined. They print key: [threw while printing]. One is a custom inspect function that logs its own object. It sent 3 lines on main and sends 2: the call that is three calls deep is not forwarded.
{ a: bad, b: bad } printed { a: undefined, b: [Circular] } on main when bad throws. The [Circular] was a stale entry: formatObject pushes the value on seen and did not pop it after a throw. Both keys print the placeholder now.
The catch in formatValue is per value and not per argument, so one bad value does not take the line.
A read of one entry that throws takes only that entry. formatPlainObject and formatWithPrototype already had a catch around each property read, which printed undefined. formatArray had no catch around an element or a named key. All four print the placeholder now: [ 1, [threw while printing], 3 ].
A throw while the formatter lists the keys or the entries of a value takes that value, for an array, an object, a Map and a Set. The values beside it still print: { list: [threw while printing], n: 1 }.
An Error whose stack is not a string made the wrapper throw. formatError returns text now.
In Chrome 153, 69 platform values were compared. Two threw on main and print the placeholder: a window of another origin and a Proxy of a Map. Two more differ: window[0] for a frame of another origin, and Object.create(URL.prototype), whose getters all throw. Both printed undefined for those properties.
The browser's own call stays outside the catches. Chrome 153 throws for console.log("%s", Object.create(null)) with or without forwarding, and the page still sees that throw.
Re-entrancy
Page code runs at three places of a forwarded console call. That code can call console.log again.
The browser's own call. Chrome 153 reads an array index getter, a Symbol.toStringTag getter, toString of a Date and of a RegExp subclass, and the name and message getters of an Error subclass.
The format. It runs a Proxy trap, a getter of a prototype, a custom inspect function, and a built-in that the page replaced (Object.is for a number).
The send. A page can replace WebSocket.prototype.send.
One rule bounds all three. The two wrappers count the console calls in progress, from before the browser's own call until the wrapper returns. A call is forwarded while the count is at most 2. A deeper call still reaches the browser's console.
Lines forwarded for one console call, with a console that runs no page code (Node 26.3):

The count is in the wrappers because a console call from inside the browser's own call runs its whole wrapper before the outer call reaches websocketInspect. A count that starts there is 0 at every level.
Earlier versions of this branch had three rules: a depth in inspect(), the list below, and a flag around the send. They missed the browser's own call and a replaced built-in on the number path. For the array in the first Chrome row they forwarded 98,006 lines (2.4 MB) for one console.log.
The limit is 2 and not 1 because a line from code that the forwarder runs can be the one that matters. The getter that catches and calls console.error is two calls deep. At a limit of 3 that array forwards 6 lines in the Node model.
The count goes down in a finally, so a console that throws leaves it right. console.log and console.error share the count.
The catch is at the two calls of websocketInspect and not inside it. A RangeError that the call itself raises near the stack limit is then inside the catch too.
One list holds the values that print, for every inspect() call in progress. A value in the list prints as [Circular]. The list does not bound the forwarded lines. It keeps a value that logs itself from printing again in the nested call: 100 getters that log this reach the browser's console 101 times and not 10,101 times.
The check against the list is a loop and not Array.prototype.includes. Svelte 5 replaces that method in development. After a miss, its version asks each element of the array for a key, which runs the has trap of a Proxy in the list.
A custom inspect function receives the options of the formatter. It gets a copy of the list, so it cannot add to the shared one.
A send that logs gets one forwarded line for each forwarded line: send lllate 1, then late 1. Lines that are logged before the socket opens go out from the queue of the socket helper, outside a console call. There it gets two.
Not in this PR
The formatter still runs code of the page: getters of a prototype, an index accessor of an array, the nodejs.util.inspect.custom function, and overrides of Map, Set, Date and RegExp subclasses. A synchronous throw from them is contained now. A function of the page that returns a promise that rejects still reaches unhandledrejection, as on main.
Chrome 153's own console.log ran no Proxy trap, no getter of a prototype and no custom inspect function.
A formatter that runs none of them is on branch robobun/97f00d76/console-forwarder-call-free-formatter. It reads properties through descriptors and applies built-ins that it captures before the page's modules run. With it, a Vue or Svelte effect that logs its state does not run again because of the log.
That formatter changes the terminal text of some values. A value with an inspect.custom function prints its structure (Decimal { s: 1, e: 0, d: [...] }, was 1.5). A Proxy of a Map prints Map { [entries not read] }. A descriptor read per array element costs +2.7 µs per logged 100-element array in Chrome 153. It is not proposed until a maintainer wants that trade.
No automated test runs a real browser. The console of the test client stands in for Chrome's: it reads each element of an array for console.log (JSON) and runs a custom inspect function for console.error (Node's util.inspect). A test through Bun.WebView needs Chrome on the lane and the Chrome lookup of test/js/bun/webview/webview-chrome.test.ts in the shared harness.
No budget of lines per console call. The count bounds the depth. A value with many getters that each log forwards one line per getter.
No test at the stack limit for the catch at the call of websocketInspect. Such a test also fails when the test client's own console call overflows after it sent its line.
The Chrome rows are from Chrome 153 without a DevTools client. Firefox and Safari were not run.
The History wrappers (hmr-runtime-client.ts:259-272) send on the same socket after pushState and replaceState. A send() that a page replaced and that throws still throws out of them, as on main. A native WebSocket does not throw from send() in the open state.
A send that logs later, from a timer or a promise, is outside the count. Each forwarded line gives one more line, as on main: about 180 frames in 200 ms after one console.log.
The forwarder does not capture the native send. After a disconnect the helper makes the socket from the page's current WebSocket (client/websocket.ts:164), which can be a class that the page installed.
In JavaScriptCore, instanceof on a Proxy whose getPrototypeOf trap returns a new Proxy each time does not return. That is the same on main.
Measurements
main b9f2ec3635 against this branch. Tools: a perf_event_open counter for user-space instructions, V8's sampling heap profiler with a 1-byte interval, zstd, headless Chrome 153.
bake.client.js from bake-codegen.ts --debug=OFF: 53,066 to 53,410 B raw, 17,766 to 17,859 B zstd-19.
Page with the forwarder off: module evaluation gains two bindings and one empty array. No call. The count is inside if (config.console).
Allocations per inspect() call in V8: one fewer than main for 13 shapes, because the list of the values that print is shared.
Instructions per console.log call, slope between N and 2N calls. V8 (Node 26.3): all-string +4.6% (774 to 810), number +0.1%, small object -1.7%, 100-number array +0.6%, list of 10 objects -0.3%, Error -3.4%, Map(20) -0.8%, class instance -2.5%. Runs differ by up to 1.6 points.
JavaScriptCore (Bun 1.4.3), in steady state: all-string +24.7% (441 to 550), number +2.0%, small object +0.2%, 100-number array -3.5%, list of 10 objects -1.5%, Error +10.1% (3,703 to 4,078), Map(20) -0.1%, class instance +2.4%. This run has four times the calls and BUN_JSC_useConcurrentJIT=0 BUN_JSC_useConcurrentGC=0. With a quarter of the calls and the defaults the slope is not stable.
The try around the browser's own call is the cost. Four shapes of the wrapper gave 541 to 550 instructions for the all-string call in JavaScriptCore, and 789 to 816 in V8.
Chrome 153 end to end, interleaved medians of 15 rounds, 3 runs: no shape is above main, apart from the 100-number array in one run (+1.03 µs of 17 µs). In that run two copies of main differ by 0.77 µs.
Each clause is held by a test
31 changes were made one at a time. Each one fails one of the four new tests.
In each wrapper: no catch at the call of websocketInspect, no limit, a limit of 1, a limit of 3, a count that starts after the browser's own call, a count that never goes down, a count that stays up when the console throws, a catch around the browser's own call, and only the first argument for the browser's own call. Also a separate count for console.error.
In the formatter: no catch in formatValue, no restore of seen, a list that is not shared, no copy of the list for a custom inspect function, includes in place of the loop, no String() in formatError, undefined in each of the two property catches, no catch around an array element, no catch around a named key of an array, and a break after each of those two catches.
Both add dev tests in the same test file. That file merges with 0 conflicts with each, in either order.

With `development: { console: true }`, `console.log` and `console.error` of the
page format their arguments in the page and send the text to the dev server.
A value that the formatter could not read made the page's call throw, and the
line was lost: a revoked Proxy, a Proxy of a Map, a window of another origin,
a custom inspect function that throws. A value that logs while it prints made
the call throw `RangeError`, or never return: a class with two getters that
log `this`.
`formatValue` now catches per value. That value prints as
`[threw while printing]` and the rest of the line prints. `websocketInspect`
catches what fails after that. A console call that is nested two levels deep
in the formatter prints `[logged while printing]` for an object, and that
ends the recursion.
Reproduced on release Bun 1.4.3-canary.1 (367d939d9) and on a debug build of main b9f2ec3635. A page served with development: { console: true } runs console.log("x", new Proxy(new Map(), {})). The call throws TypeError: Method get Map.prototype.size called on incompatible receiver #<Map>, and the dev server prints no [browser] line.
USE_SYSTEM_BUN=1 bun test test/bake/dev/esm.test.ts -t "browser console forwarding" fails the 4 new tests. bun bd test with the same filter passes them.
CI on bcec84d (build 137709): test/bake/dev/esm.test.ts gives 22 pass, 1 todo, 0 fail on the 12 test lanes that run it (Linux, macOS and Windows).
That build is red on 28 test files: 27 under test/aot/ and test/bundler/compile-aot-size.test.ts. Each of them also fails in build 137481 of main at b9f2ec3635, the base of this PR. A new run cannot turn the build green while they fail on main.

Walkthrough
Console inspection now tracks nested formatting and returns markers for formatting failures. WebSocket forwarding suppresses synchronous formatting and send errors. Browser tests cover throwing values, nested logging, and console.error forwarding.

Inspection tracks nested calls and returns markers for nested object or function logging and formatting failures. Property-access failures use the failure marker. formatError converts the selected stack or error value to a string. Browser tests cover throwing values, nested logging, and console.error forwarding.
WebSocket console forwarding catches synchronous errors during formatting and sending.

Console forwarding now contains formatting and send failures. A page that overrides symbol formatting to log recursively can still generate a bounded burst of forwarded messages; this narrow residual risk warrants owner awareness but does not block merging.

Explanation
The description follows the repository template with both required sections, "What does this PR do?" (Problem, Fix, Background, Downsides, Notes) and "How did you verify your code works?" (test suites run, new tests that fail on main, probe corpus and measurements). It is detailed and specific. The verification section is complete for Linux/Bun-based tests. The bot evidence block says the platform-specific esm.test.ts was not run on the author's machine and defers to CI. That is a gap, but the author states the test that fails on main and the command to run it, so the description is mostly complete.

Include symbols in the re-entrancy depth guard.
formatSymbol calls value.toString(). A page that overrides Symbol.prototype.toString to call console.log can re-enter inspect with the same symbol. The depth guard does not cover symbols, so this recursion continues until the JavaScript stack limit. The try in formatValue absorbs the overflow, and the unwinding can send one forwarded line per nesting level. Before this change, the overflow propagated into page code.
With this change, a symbol at the third nested inspect call returns [logged while printing], so the recursion stops after a few levels. Top-level symbols and symbols nested one level deep print as before.
A regression test in test/bake/dev/esm.test.ts can override Symbol.prototype.toString to call console.log(this.valueOf()), log a symbol, and assert that the number of forwarded lines is small and that [logged while printing] appears.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline finding, I also checked that the module-level inspectDepth counter cannot get stuck: inspect is only called from websocketInspect, formatValue catches everything below it, and the finally decrements on every exit, so a throw never leaves later objects permanently tagged [logged while printing]. The seen.length restore in formatValue's catch also correctly undoes the push in formatObject for the throwing value only.
Extended reasoning...
The diff touches the Bake dev-server client runtime (inspect.ts formatter and the console forwarder in hmr-runtime-client.ts) plus three new devTest cases; it touches no auth, crypto, or data-exposure surface. One confirmed finding (quadratic forwarded-line flood under the per-level depth cap) is posted inline, and no CODEOWNER covers the changed paths. The re-entrancy counter and the seen restore were traced and hold up; the remaining judgment call is the design of the depth limit, which the inline comment covers.
One list now holds the values that print, for every `inspect()` call that is
in progress. A console call from code that a value runs (a getter, a Proxy
trap) prints that value as `[Circular]`, so it does not print again.
A class with N getters that each log `this` forwards N + 1 lines. With the
depth limit alone it forwarded N * N + N + 1. The depth limit stays for a
value that is not in the list: a function, the object of a custom inspect
function, or a new value on every call.
The tests also hold that an argument after a value that cannot print still
prints.
An argument after a value that cannot print. Added. The probe value before another argument logs a value with a custom inspect function that throws, then the string after. The test expects value before another argument [threw while printing] after.
Symbols in the depth guard. Not changed. The case needs a page that replaces Symbol.prototype.toString with a function that logs. The formatter calls many built-in methods (String.prototype.replace, Array.prototype.join), and a replaced one that logs reaches the same recursion. A guard per type does not close that. Since this PR, such a call returns after the stack overflow is caught, and it does not throw into the page. A tag for symbols also changes a nested console.log(symbol) that prints correctly today.
Line count for a value that logs itself. Fixed with one list of the values that print, shared by the nested calls. The review thread has the numbers.

The list of the values that print is shared by every `inspect()` call since
the last commit. A custom inspect function receives the context, so it could
add to that list. The value that it added then printed as `[Circular]` in
every later call. The function now gets a copy of the list.
Assert the browser console arguments, not only their labels.
expectMessageInAnyOrder compares only the first argument of each browser console call. A change that drops the remaining arguments from originalLog(...args) would leave this test passing. Add a check that covers the full arguments, or accept this gap for now.

🟡 src/runtime/bake/client/inspect.ts — nit: developers who log an array with one throwing index getter get the whole array replaced by "[threw while printing]" in the terminal, while a plain object with the same throwing key keeps its other properties. formatArray reads value[i] at src/runtime/bake/client/inspect.ts:292 (and value[key] at :310) with no per-element try, so the throw escapes to formatValue's catch for the array itself. Fix: give array elements and extra keys the same per-entry catch as formatPlainObject:359 and formatWithPrototype:403, printing the tag only for the entry that threw, so the two sites and the plain-object sites print one shape. The test at test/bake/dev/esm.test.ts pins the whole-array tag, so it would need updating.
Why this was flagged
A page with development.console on logs an array that has an accessor at an index that throws, e.g. the fixture at test/bake/dev/esm.test.ts ("getter of an array that throws"), or an array with an extra named accessor that throws. websocketInspect at src/runtime/bake/hmr-runtime-client.ts:334 calls inspect, which reaches formatArray. formatArray reads value[i] at src/runtime/bake/client/inspect.ts:292 and value[key] at :310 directly, outside any try. The throw unwinds through formatObject into the catch at :135 for the array value, so the forwarded line prints the whole array as "[threw while printing]" and every readable sibling element is lost. For a plain object the per-key catch at :359 keeps siblings and prints { a: [threw while printing], b: 2 }, and the PR description states one bad property does not replace the whole object. On the base branch the throw went into the page, so this is an improvement that stops short of the sibling site; the test pins the whole-array tag so the inconsistency is now locked in.
Verification: nit. Triggered when a page with development.console on logs an array whose index or extra property is an accessor that throws. formatArray at src/runtime/bake/client/inspect.ts:292 and :310 read the element outside any try, so the throw reaches the catch in formatValue, which returns "[threw while printing]" for the whole array. On the base commit the throw escaped inspect into the page.
formatArray read an element and a named key outside a catch. One read
that throws replaced the whole array with the placeholder. Both loops
now catch per entry, as formatPlainObject and formatWithPrototype do:
[ 1, [threw while printing], 3 ].
Two review notes on 578d1f1. 3462573 handles the first. The second needs no change.
An array entry that throws replaced the whole array (inspect.ts:292 and :310)
Done. Both loops of formatArray catch per entry now, as formatPlainObject and formatWithPrototype do.
An index getter that throws: [ 1, [threw while printing], 3 ].
A named key whose read throws: [ 1, 2, a: [threw while printing] ].
The test has one probe for each catch. Without either catch, browser console forwarding does not throw into the page fails. The cost is +92 B raw and +11 B zstd-19 in bake.client.js. The instruction count of the two array shapes stays within 1% of main in V8 and in JavaScriptCore.
The catch in the loop of the named keys conflicts with #45564 and #47905, which rewrite that loop. The pull request that merges second keeps its own loop, with the placeholder in the catch.
Arguments of the browser's own console call (esm.test.ts:670)
No change. The harness keeps only the first argument of each console.log call (test/bake/bake-harness.ts:894), so expectMessageInAnyOrder cannot compare the other arguments. The other two tests hold that line:
With originalLog(args[0]), browser console forwarding does not throw into the page fails. The console that throws probe passes its BigInt as the second argument.
With consoleErrorWithoutInspector(args[0]), browser console forwarding does not make console.error throw fails. Its console that throws probe passes the object as the second argument.
Add a probe with a readable named key after the throwing key.
The loop in formatArray continues after a named key throws. The existing array probe has only the throwing key a, so the test does not check that later named keys still print. A change that adds break after the catch would still pass. Add a separate probe instead of changing the existing one. The existing single-key case stays unchanged.

A named key after the key that throws (esm.test.ts:502)
Done in d060903. The probe Proxy of an array that throws for one key now has a second named key, and the line is Set { [ 1, 2, a: [threw while printing], b: 4 ] }. I changed the probe and did not add one: the same probe still fails without the catch. A break after either catch of formatArray fails browser console forwarding does not throw into the page.
A catch around Object.keys in formatArray (inspect.ts:318)
No change. The reason is in the review thread: a throw while the formatter lists the keys of a value takes that value, for an array as for an object, a Map and a Set.
…ot forwarded
The page can replace WebSocket.prototype.send with a function that logs.
The forwarder sent that line too, and its send logged again. Without the
catch in websocketInspect the recursion ended with a RangeError in the
page. With the catch, each level sent its line on the way out: 1,816
frames for one console.log in V8.
A flag is set while the forwarder sends. A console call in that time
still reaches the browser's own console, and the forwarder does not send
a line for it.

I re-reviewed the latest push (abe1d49) and found no bugs; the sending guard in websocketInspect closes the re-entrant-send case and the new "socket that logs" assertions pin it. Because the fix relies on module-level shared state (printing, inspectDepth) whose bounds are a design choice (per-level depth cap, quadratic in nested calls), a human look at that design is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
inspectDepth is incremented only after the depth>1 early return and decremented in finally, so the counter stays balanced on every path; ctx.seen.length = seenLength on throw restores the shared list to the caller's view.
sending is set only right before ws.sendBuffered and cleared after the catch, so a page-patched send that logs is dropped once and a throwing send cannot leave the guard stuck.
The bare catch {} in websocketInspect only drops the forwarded terminal line after the browser's own console call already ran, so it degrades a best-effort diagnostic rather than hiding a user-requested operation.
Checked the queued-send flush in client/websocket.ts for the same unbounded re-entrancy — a patched send that logs during the flush nests one level and stops at the guard.
Extended reasoning...
The diff touches two files of the Bake dev-server browser runtime (src/runtime/bake/client/inspect.ts and src/runtime/bake/hmr-runtime-client.ts) plus test/bake/dev/esm.test.ts, hardening development.console forwarding so formatting a page value cannot throw into console.log or recurse without end. It touches no auth, crypto, or data-exposure surface; it is a dev-only diagnostic path that runs page code (getters, Proxy traps, custom inspect). The latest commit addresses the earlier inline finding about a page-replaced WebSocket.prototype.send, and the three new devTest cases assert exact forwarded lines and trap call counts. Deferring rather than approving because the fix introduces module-level shared state and a depth/quadratic bound that is a design trade-off a maintainer should endorse, and the PR was authored by a bot with no human reviewer yet.
… every nested call
Page code that logs while a line is forwarded re-entered the forwarder.
Three rules bounded that: a depth in inspect(), a list of the values
that print, and a flag around the send. They missed two paths. The
browser's own console call runs page code (Chrome reads an index
getter), and a number prints through built-ins that a page can replace.
For one console.log of an array whose index getter logs the array,
Chrome 153 forwarded 97,875 lines.
The two console wrappers now count the console calls in progress, the
browser's own call included. A call is forwarded while the count is at
most 2. The catch moves from websocketInspect to its two call sites, so
a RangeError from the call itself stays inside too.
inspect() loses its depth and the "[logged while printing]" text. The
flag around the send is gone: a send() that logs gets one forwarded line
and stops at the count. The list of the values that print stays, and the
check against it is a loop, because a page can replace
Array.prototype.includes (Svelte 5 does in development).
3b87a3e reworks the re-entrancy limit. The catches are unchanged.
Why
A further review of abe1d49 showed that the limit was three rules (a depth in inspect(), the list of the values that print, a flag around the send) and that they missed two paths.
The browser's own console call runs page code. Chrome 153 reads an array index getter. For one console.log of an array whose index getter logs the array, abe1d49 forwarded 98,006 lines (2.4 MB).
A number prints through built-ins that a page can replace. With Object.is replaced by a function that logs a number, main throws RangeError, and abe1d49 forwarded 1,219 lines in Chrome 153.
What changed
The two console wrappers count the console calls in progress, from before the browser's own call. A call is forwarded while the count is at most 2. The two cases above now forward 3 lines and 2 lines.
inspect() has no depth and no [logged while printing] text. The flag around the send is gone: a send that logs gets one forwarded line, and the count stops the next one.
The catch is at the two calls of websocketInspect and not inside it.
The check against the list of the values that print is a loop and not Array.prototype.includes. Svelte 5 replaces that method in development.
Cost
About +40 instructions per console call in V8 and +110 in JavaScriptCore for an all-string call (774 to 810, 441 to 550). The try around the browser's own call is the cost.
bake.client.js is +344 B raw against main. It was +393 B at abe1d49.
A console call that is three calls deep is not forwarded. It still reaches the browser's console.
Tests
The send steps have their own test, which logs strings only.
New probes: a built-in that logs a number, an element getter that logs from inside the console's own call, the same path for console.error, a Svelte-shaped includes, a mix of console.log and console.error.
31 single changes to the fix each fail one of the four tests. All four fail on main.
The PR body has the tables, the measurements and the list of what is not done.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked that the shared printing list cannot be left with stale entries: formatObject pushes without a finally, but every throw lands in formatValue's catch, which truncates seen back to its entry length, so a throwing value does not make later logs print [Circular]. The depth <= 2 counter in hmr-runtime-client.ts also bounds the case where a page-replaced WebSocket.prototype.send logs: the nested call forwards once and the third level is dropped, so there is no unbounded recursion there.
Extended reasoning...
The change touches only the Bake dev-server client console forwarder (inspect.ts formatting, the console.log/console.error patches) and its test file; no security-sensitive surface. The two inline findings are test-side (a pipe-ordering flake and a duplicated fixture), and the runtime logic for seen-list restoration and re-entrancy bounding was checked and holds.
Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.
…he other pipe
The console.error test waited for "done" on stderr of the dev server and
then for a console.log line on stdout. waitForLine starts after the last
line that it matched. When the stdout line was read first, the second
wait found nothing and timed out. The test now looks at every line and
waits for the next "line" event until the stdout line is there.
The send() test takes its files from consoleForwardingFiles.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the new module-level printing list for stale entries: formatObject is the only pusher, and the catch in formatValue truncates the list back to its pre-call length, so a throw inside a nested inspect() (from a getter or trap that logs) cannot leave the outer value marked [Circular] after the nested call returns. The depth counter also decrements in finally on both wrappers, so a throwing browser console.log does not pin forwarding off.
Extended reasoning...
The change touches the dev-server browser console forwarder (src/runtime/bake/client/inspect.ts and src/runtime/bake/hmr-runtime-client.ts) plus new tests in test/bake/dev/esm.test.ts; it handles untrusted page values but only formats them for terminal output, with no auth, crypto, or injection surface. The one surviving finding is a test-hang nit; the per-call-to-module-global seen list was the refactor most worth scrutiny and its push/pop and catch-restore paths balance.
…ev server exits
The wait settled only on a "line" event. It now takes an abort signal
that fires on "close" of the output of the dev server, so an exit fails
the test at once. The stderr lines are checked before the wait.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
I re-reviewed the latest pushes and found no bugs; the bounded wait added in bcec84d settles the test-hang nit from the previous round. Because this change picks user-visible behavior (the depth-2 forwarding limit, the [threw while printing] text replacing undefined, and the swallowed forwarder errors), a human maintainer's look at those choices is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
Push/pop balance of the shared module-level printing list across nested inspect() calls — every formatObject push is paired with a pop, and formatValue's catch truncates back to its entry length, so a nested call that throws cannot leave a stale entry for the outer call.
The depth counter in both console wrappers — decremented in finally, so a throwing originalLog or send() leaves it correct; the counter is shared by log and error as the tests assume.
The new test wait on stdout — once("line", { signal }) is aborted by the harness's "close" event, which fires once both dev-server pipes end, so a dead server fails the test instead of hanging.
Extended reasoning...
The diff touches the Bake dev-server browser console forwarder (src/runtime/bake/client/inspect.ts and src/runtime/bake/hmr-runtime-client.ts, about 140 source lines) plus 467 lines of new devTest cases in test/bake/dev/esm.test.ts; the only importer of inspect() is the HMR client, so the module-level shared list has no other consumer. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface; it only changes text forwarded over the dev HMR socket in development mode. The two commits since my last review address the nits I raised, and the hunt ran dry with no findings. I am deferring rather than approving because the change encodes deliberate design trade-offs (a hard-coded forwarding depth of 2, a new sentinel string, blanket catches around forwarding) that a maintainer should sign off on, and because several earlier third-party review threads were resolved only by the author.
