…rors getter throws `formatError` read these properties with no guard. A value is formatted as an error when it inherits from Error.prototype, so each of them can be a getter that throws. The copy of a DOMException that AssertionError makes for its message is such a value: the `name` and `message` getters of DOMException.prototype throw for a receiver that is not a DOMException. So `assert.deepStrictEqual(AbortSignal.abort().reason, new Error())` threw a TypeError in place of an AssertionError and left `Error.stackTraceLimit` at 0. The error of a failed `require()` did the same. Guard each read, as Node's lib/internal/util/inspect.js does.

- Line 1788: Update the check in the error-property inspection path to verify
value is a string before calling StringPrototypeIncludes; skip non-string values
so util.inspect does not trigger coercion errors.
- Around line 1864-1867: Normalize the raw message read from err.message before
using it in the stack handling: convert it to a string with appropriate error
handling, or accept only strings. Use the normalized value consistently for the
truthiness check in the stack.replace expression and the later
StringPrototypeIndexOf and length operations, avoiding raw non-string message
values.

src/js/internal/util/inspect.js— pre-existing: util.inspect still throws when an error's cause has a stack that cannot be read and a name getter that throws, e.g. cause{ __proto__: DOMException.prototype }. The guardedgetStackStringhelper has a second caller at src/js/internal/util/inspect.js:1724 that is not wrapped: theErrorPrototypeToStringfallback readscause.nameand the throw escapesgetStackFramesandformatError. Fix: make every caller ofgetStackStringnon-throwing for a throwing stack/name/message, for example catch ingetStackFramesand skip the cause-frame dedupe, or move theObjectPrototypeToStringfallback into the helper so both sites get it. [also at: src/js/internal/util/inspect.js:1709 - pre-existing: callers of util.inspect still get a thrown getter error, instead of output, when an error'scausehas stack and name getters that both throw. getStackString at src/js/internal/util/inspect.js:1709 falls back to ErrorPrototypeToString, which reads name and message with no guard; the direct formatError path catches that at inspect.js:1851, but the sibling caller getStackFrames at inspect.js:1724 does not.]Why this was flagged
Trigger:
util.inspect(new Error("a", { cause: { __proto__: DOMException.prototype } })). formatError(err) at src/js/internal/util/inspect.js:1896 calls getStackFrames, which at src/js/internal/util/inspect.js:1724 calls getStackString(cause) with no try. In getStackString (src/js/internal/util/inspect.js:1709)stackis falsy or its getter threw, so it calls ErrorPrototypeToString(cause), which readscause.name; the DOMException.prototype name getter throws for a non-DOMException receiver. Nothing catches it: the try at src/js/internal/util/inspect.js:1849 covers only the outer error's own stack read. The caller gets a TypeError from util.inspect instead of a string, the same as on the base branch, so this is pre-existing; the PR guards one of the two callers of the helper it changed and leaves the sibling.Verification: pre-existing — base already throws by the same route. getStackFrames at src/js/internal/util/inspect.js:1724 calls
getStackString(cause)with no try/catch around the call. getStackString line 1709return stack ? String(stack) : ErrorPrototypeToString(error);readsname/messageand its throw propagates. Nothing upstream catches it, so the TypeError escapesutil.inspect.
… be strings
- `getStackFrames` read the stack of the `cause` with no guard, so
`util.inspect(new Error("a", { cause: { __proto__: DOMException.prototype } }))`
threw. `getStackString` now returns undefined when an error has no text,
and both of its callers handle that.
- A `name`, a `message` or an own `stack` that cannot be a string (a
`toString` that throws, a Symbol) threw from `String()`, `indexOf` or
`includes`. `formatError` and `removeDuplicateErrorKeys` catch that.
- When the message getter throws, `formatError` no longer rewrites the first
line of a stack that already has the message in it.

Commit 02e91ab addresses both points from my earlier review: the ^Error: rewrite is now skipped when the message getter throws, and removeDuplicateErrorKeys wraps the StringPrototypeIncludes coercion in the same try. Beyond the two inline nits, I also checked that ordinary native errors take the same path as before (message is a string, so the pos computation and the prefix rewrite are unchanged) and that the getStackFrames cause guard handles the undefined stack before StringPrototypeSlice.
Extended reasoning...
The change hardens formatError, getStackString, getStackFrames and removeDuplicateErrorKeys in src/js/internal/util/inspect.js against throwing getters and unstringifiable values, mirroring Node's guards, plus a shared test fixture and new test.each matrices in the assert and inspect suites. It touches no security-sensitive surface. The second push resolves both prior inline threads, and the remaining inline findings are nits, so this note only records what else was examined.
…first line formatError put the name into the first line of the stack with String.prototype.replace. That call expands `$&`, `$$`, "$`" and `$'` in the name. It now cuts the `Error: ` prefix and joins the strings. The tests for a name, a message or a stack that cannot be a string now compare the whole text.

Main renamed src/js/internal/util/inspect.js to inspect.ts, typed it, and replaced the uncurried primordials with `.$call` on the prototype method. The guards of this branch move to the renamed file in that form: `getStackString` returns `string | undefined`, and the new lines call `ObjectPrototypeToString`, `StringPrototypeStartsWith` and `StringPrototypeSlice` through `.$call`.
…-error Main typed the files of this branch and renamed inspect.js and node-shims.js to .ts. The changes of this branch move to those files: - inspect.ts is the file of #45254 after its merge with main. - events.ts keeps the `shared` binding of main and takes `isError` from it. - iter/utils.ts and repl/node-shims.ts use the shared `isError` in place of the typed private copies of main. - event-emitter.test.ts has the imports of both sides.
