Problem

  • With no "error" listener, emitter.emit("error", x) throws a new ERR_UNHANDLED_ERROR, not x, when Error.isError(x) is false: an error of a class written without class, a DOMException, a Proxy of an Error. assert(false, x) throws a new AssertionError.
  • The cause is Error.isError in emitError (src/js/node/events.ts:323) and innerOk (src/js/internal/assert/utils.ts:20). The other assert calls ask instanceof Error and replace an error of another realm.

Fix

  • internal/shared gets Node's internal isError: Error.isError(e), or Error.prototype is in its prototype chain.
  • emitError and seven node:assert places call it. It replaces four other predicates in src/js.
  • The util.inspect commits are util.inspect: do not throw when an error's stack, name, message or errors getter throws #45254. copyError needs them.
  • Verified: test/js/node/events/event-emitter.test.ts, test/js/node/assert/assert.spec.ts and three more files (76 tests fail on main), 235 Node tests. Self-reviewed: see Notes.

Background

Downsides

Notes

Merged with main at 11c3671. #45631 typed the files of this PR and renamed inspect.js and node-shims.js to .ts. The changes are in those files in that form. events.ts keeps the shared binding of main and takes isError from it. iter/utils.ts and repl/node-shims.ts use the shared helper in place of the typed private copies of main.

Self-review. It asked for a re-cut before this PR was opened, and this is the re-cut. The util.inspect guards became #45254, so that they do not wait for the question below. emit calls the helper and not a bare instanceof. The Bun.sql and zlib edits are out. The costs it named are in Downsides and in this block.

The predicate question.

Not as in Node, on purpose. Node's emit asks only er instanceof Error, so it wraps a native error of another realm (vm.runInNewContext("new Error()")) in ERR_UNHANDLED_ERROR. Bun 1.2.11 and later throw it as itself, and this PR keeps that. With Node's line, domain.run, domain.bind and a res.end() callback that throws would start to wrap such an error, which Node and Bun 1.4.3 do not do (12 of 138 probed domain cells, 1 res.end row). The test row "a native error of another realm is thrown as itself" pins it.

The second difference is the bound. A prototype chain can have no end only through a Proxy, for example const x = new Proxy({}, { getPrototypeOf: () => x }). Node throws a RangeError for x instanceof Error. JavaScriptCore loops for ever in JSObject::defaultHasInstance: on Bun 1.4.3 assert.fail(x) and assert.strictEqual(1, 2, x) never return. The helper counts the Proxies on the chain and answers false after 1000. So emit("error", x) throws the ERR_UNHANDLED_ERROR wrapper and the assert calls throw an AssertionError, where Node throws the RangeError. No call hangs. The count never starts for a chain without a Proxy. The test rows "a prototype chain that cycles through a Proxy is no error" and "a message whose prototype chain cycles through a Proxy is no error" pin it. For const o = {}; Object.setPrototypeOf(o, new Proxy(o, {})) the same calls throw a RangeError in Bun too: util.inspect throws it when it builds the message.

Measurements. Main 11c367163a against this PR on one debug binary. Node is v26.3.0. The numbers are for this PR with #45254. The rows that count probe cells or calls are from the first base, 47ba1c8d85.

  • Substitute errors per 10,000 calls: emit 1 (main 10,000, Node 1), assert.ok 1 (main 10,000, Node 1), for 8 kinds of error each. 12 fail, comparison and match calls with an error of another realm: 1 (main 10,000, Node 1).
  • Paths that never reach the predicate: 0 of 3 hot functions changed bytecode (emit 113 instructions, ok 13, strictEqual 37).
  • Changed functions: emitError 72 to 71 instructions, innerOk 39 to 38, innerFail 21 to 22, fail 75 to 76, internalMatch 95 to 96. The new isError is 31.
  • An unhandled emit of a native error: 1 JS call and 1 host call (was 1 host call). A failing assertion with a string message: 1 JS call and 1 host call (was 1 instanceof, no call).
  • Module load: +1 function per VM that loads internal/shared. Top-level bytecode: internal/shared 324 to 339 instructions, node:events +2, node:assert +12, internal/assert/utils +12.
  • Embedded JS from the release codegen (bundle-modules.ts --debug=OFF): 9 files, +513 bytes for the commits of this PR alone. With util.inspect: do not throw when an error's stack, name, message or errors getter throws #45254: +1,093 bytes. No new host function, no new module, no native line.
  • Rows that differ from Node over 15 kinds of value: emit 9 to 1 (the other realm), assert.ok 8 to 0, assert.fail 1 to 0. A 100-cell probe of 18 assert calls: 28 to 0.
  • node:domain over 138 probed cells: 50 more equal Node, 0 fewer.
  • Error.isError( in src/js: 15 to 10. Copies of Node's isError formula: 5 to 2.
  • valgrind, perf and bloaty are not installed in the build container, so there is no dynamic instruction count and no size from full release builds.

More on the downsides.

Left as they are.

  • src/js/node/test.ts:707 (serializeRunError): it needs guarded reads of message, stack, code, name and cause first, and node:test run(): report child events in byte frames that printed text cannot produce #45003 moves it to another file. The PR that merges second points it at the shared helper.
  • src/js/node/assert.ts:561 and src/js/internal/assert/assertion_error.ts:301-303: Node has a bare instanceof Error in the same lines (expected instanceof Error in expectedException, and the stack of the actual of assert.throws).
  • src/js/bun/ffi.ts (6 places), src/js/bun/sql.ts:448 and src/js/internal/streams/writable.ts:635: the value always comes from Bun's own code.
  • src/js/node/zlib.ts:474: only an overridden destroy() reaches it.
  • src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts:1495 and :1839: the same formula, written inline. No change.
  • The native EventEmitter of process, process.emitWarning, and the Node 26 message rules of assert (ERR_AMBIGUOUS_ARGUMENT, function messages).

What consumers see for an old-style error that is now thrown as itself. It is what they see today for a direct throw x. The uncaught printer shows name, message, code and stack. A worker.on("error") clone keeps the own properties, as in Node. node:test run() reports the message text only.

Tests. Each expectation is what Node v26.3.0 prints for the same code, but for the row of the other realm.

  • test/js/node/events/event-emitter.test.ts: 36 tests, 34 fail on main. 10 kinds of error through emit, EventEmitterAsyncResource and a domain. readable.destroy(x), writable.destroy(x) and captureRejections to uncaughtException. Replaced globals.
  • test/js/node/assert/assert.spec.ts: 18 calls with 11 kinds of error each, the text of assert.throws, the copy of a cause, a chain that cycles through a Proxy, replaced globals. 25 tests fail on main.
  • test/js/node/stream/node-stream.test.js: pipeToSync, pipeTo, share, shareSync, push of node:stream/iter.
  • test/js/node/test_runner/fixtures/20-hook-signal-and-assert-ok.js: t.assert.ok.
  • test/js/node/test/parallel/test-internal-util-helpers.js now runs against this helper.

…rors getter throws

`formatError` read these properties with no guard. A value is formatted as
an error when it inherits from Error.prototype, so each of them can be a
getter that throws. The copy of a DOMException that AssertionError makes
for its message is such a value: the `name` and `message` getters of
DOMException.prototype throw for a receiver that is not a DOMException.

So `assert.deepStrictEqual(AbortSignal.abort().reason, new Error())` threw
a TypeError in place of an AssertionError and left `Error.stackTraceLimit`
at 0. The error of a failed `require()` did the same.

Guard each read, as Node's lib/internal/util/inspect.js does.
…m Error.prototype

`emitter.emit("error", x)` with no listener threw a new ERR_UNHANDLED_ERROR,
and `assert(false, x)` threw a new AssertionError, when `Error.isError(x)` is
false: an error of a class written without the `class` keyword, a
DOMException, a Proxy of an Error.

- internal/shared gets one `isError`: a native error of any realm, or an
  object that inherits from Error.prototype. This is Node's internal isError.
- events: `emitError` calls it. A native error of another realm is still
  thrown as itself. Node wraps that one.
- assert: it replaces `Error.isError` and `instanceof Error` at the seven
  places where Node calls its isError. So `fail`, the comparisons and `match`
  also throw an error of another realm as itself.
- It replaces three private copies and the legacy `util.isError` in
  stream/iter.

Status: open. The fix and its tests are on the branch, merged with main at 11c3671. The util.inspect commits are #45254.

How I reproduced it (Bun 1.4.3 and main):

const { EventEmitter } = require("node:events");
const assert = require("node:assert");
function OldError(message) {
  this.message = message;
}
OldError.prototype = Object.create(Error.prototype);
const x = new OldError("m");
try {
  new EventEmitter().emit("error", x);
} catch (e) {
  console.log(e === x, e.code);
}
try {
  assert(false, x);
} catch (e) {
  console.log(e === x, e.code);
}
  • Bun 1.4.3 and main: false ERR_UNHANDLED_ERROR, then false ERR_ASSERTION
  • Node v26.3.0 and this PR: true undefined, then true undefined

Walkthrough

The change adds a shared error predicate and applies it across assertion, event, and stream code. Error inspection now handles failures when accessing error properties. New tests cover inherited and cross-realm errors, throwing getters, and error-value handling across these APIs.

Changes

Error handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared error predicate
src/js/internal/shared.ts, src/js/internal-for-testing.ts, src/js/internal/repl/node-shims.ts
A shared predicate checks native error identity and walks object prototypes for the captured current-realm Error.prototype. Internal utilities now use the shared implementation.
Assertion error recognition
src/js/internal/assert/*, src/js/node/assert.ts, test/js/node/inherited-errors.ts, test/js/node/assert/assert.spec.ts, test/js/node/test_runner/*
Assertion code uses the shared predicate for error messages, causes, and thrown values. Tests cover inherited and cross-realm errors, thrown-value identity, and deep comparisons.
Event error recognition
src/js/node/events.ts, test/js/node/events/event-emitter.test.ts
Event code uses the shared predicate before throwing an unhandled error event value. Tests cover emitter variants, inherited and cross-realm errors, prototype traps, and thrown-value identity.
Stream iterator error handling
src/js/internal/streams/iter/*, test/js/node/stream/node-stream.test.js
Stream iterator code uses the shared predicate for error passthrough and wrapping. Tests cover inherited errors, DOMException values, and tagged non-error values.
Error inspection
src/js/internal/util/inspect.ts, test/js/node/util/node-inspect-tests/internal-inspect.test.js
Error inspection handles failures when reading or converting error properties. Tests cover throwing getters and formatted output.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the wrapError switch in src/js/internal/streams/iter/utils.ts from the legacy util.isError (native error or Symbol.toStringTag === "Error") to the shared helper: it is a real behavior change (toStringTag-only objects are now wrapped in ERR_OPERATION_FAILED, old-style errors are now passed through), but it matches Node's isError and the new node-stream test pins all five consumers (pipeTo, pipeToSync, share, shareSync, push) for both directions, so it is not a regression. The catch {} blocks added in inspect.js are each limited to a single user getter read with a stated fallback.

Extended reasoning...

The change consolidates four private isError definitions into src/js/internal/shared.ts and switches node:events and seven node:assert sites to it, plus hardens util.inspect's formatError against throwing getters; it touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface. Inline findings are posted on the Proxy prototype-cycle hang, the DOMException cause path in copyError, node:test run() serialization, remaining instanceof sites, and the cause-name getter in inspect, so a human look is already signalled; this note only records the wrapError semantics check that was examined and ruled out.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🔴 src/js/internal/assert/assertion_error.ts — A failing comparison of an error whose cause is a DOMException can now throw a TypeError instead of an AssertionError and leave Error.stackTraceLimit at 0 for the whole process. copyError at src/js/internal/assert/assertion_error.ts:59-60 now copies a DOMException cause into a { __proto__: DOMException.prototype } object whose name/message getters throw. When the outer copy keeps stack frames (operand built as Object.create(new Error()), or any own enumerable stack), formatError reaches getStackFrames, and src/js/internal/util/inspect.js:1724 calls getStackString(cause) with no try/catch, so ErrorPrototypeToString throws out of inspectValue before the restore at :373. Fix: guard getStackString at inspect.js:1724 like formatError does, and restore the limit in a finally. [also at: src/js/internal/assert/assertion_error.ts:59 - After a failing comparison whose cause inherits from Error.prototype but has a throwing getter, every later error in the process loses its stack trace.]

    Why this was flagged

    Trigger: assert.deepStrictEqual(actual, new Error('y')) where actual = Object.assign(Object.create(new Error('x')), { cause: new DOMException('m', 'AbortError') }) — both operands pass the "stack" in actual && actual instanceof Error gate at assertion_error.ts:300-303. copyError(actual) at :305 finds own cause, and the new isError(cause) at :59 is true for a DOMException (base: Error.isError was false, so the real DOMException was kept). copyError(DOMException) at :60 builds { __proto__: DOMException.prototype }, and such a copy has name and message getters that throw. inspectValue(actual copy) at :342 → formatError: the copy's inherited stack has frames, so inspect.js:1896 calls getStackFrames; :1724 getStackString(cause) → cause.stack is falsy → ErrorPrototypeToString(cause) reads name and throws TypeError. That call is outside the new try/catch blocks (only formatError's own getStackString at :1850 is guarded). The TypeError escapes the AssertionError constructor between :280 and :373, so Error.stackTraceLimit stays 0 process-wide and the caller gets a TypeError instead of the AssertionError.

    Verification: copyError at src/js/internal/assert/assertion_error.ts:59-60 builds { __proto__: DOMException.prototype } for a DOMException cause, whose name getter throws a TypeError for a non-DOMException receiver. src/js/internal/util/inspect.js:1724 calls getStackString(cause) outside any try, so the TypeError escapes before Error.stackTraceLimit = limit at assertion_error.ts:373.

  • 🟣 src/js/node/assert.ts — nit, pre-existing: two node:assert sites still classify errors with bare instanceof Error while the rest of the module now uses the tamper-resistant shared isError. expected instanceof Error at src/js/node/assert.ts:534 and actual instanceof Error / expected instanceof Error at src/js/internal/assert/assertion_error.ts:301-303 go through the user-overridable Error[Symbol.hasInstance] and give a different answer than the new helper for a native error of another realm. Fix: route every error classification in assert through the shared isError from internal/shared, or name these two sites as deliberate exclusions in the PR as the description does for the other leftover sites.

    Why this was flagged

    The PR replaces five instanceof Error checks in src/js/node/assert.ts with isError from src/js/internal/shared.ts:190, whose comment and the PR text give tamper-resistance (captured Function.prototype[Symbol.hasInstance]) as the reason. src/js/node/assert.ts:534 (if (expected instanceof Error) in expectedException, which decides whether name and message are compared for assert.throws(fn, errorObject)) and src/js/internal/assert/assertion_error.ts:301-303 (which decide whether copyError hides the stacks in a comparison message) keep the bare operator. A script that defines Error[Symbol.hasInstance] (or passes an error created in another vm context) gets name/message skipped or ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE 'may not be an empty object' at line 537 for a cross-realm expected error, while the five converted sites in the same file classify the same value as an error. This is unchanged from the base branch and matches Node's own instanceof at those lines, so it is a consistency nit, not a regression; the PR's 'Left as they are' list names other files but not these two sites.

    Verification: nit, pre-existing. After the PR, node:assert uses the shared isError, but src/js/node/assert.ts:534 and src/js/internal/assert/assertion_error.ts:301-303 still use the bare operator. User code replacing globalThis.Error then calling assert.throws(fn, realErrorObject) throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE instead of comparing name/message. Both lines behave identically on the base.

  • 🟣 src/js/internal/util/inspect.js — Users of util.inspect, util.format and node:assert messages still get a thrown TypeError, not a formatted string, when an error with stack frames has a cause whose name getter throws. Commit f499747 hardened formatError and getStackString against throwing stack, name, message and errors getters, but getStackFrames at src/js/internal/util/inspect.js:1723-1724 calls getStackString(cause) with no guard, and getStackString falls through to ErrorPrototypeToString(cause), which reads cause.name. For a cause such as Object.create(DOMException.prototype) that read throws Illegal invocation out of inspect. Fix: guard the cause stack read at :1724 the same way formatError does at :1850-1853 (try/catch, skip frame de-duplication on throw).

    Why this was flagged

    util.inspect(new Error('a', { cause: Object.create(DOMException.prototype) })) or a cause that is a Proxy of a DOMException reaches formatError at src/js/internal/util/inspect.js:1896, which calls getStackFrames because the outer error has frames. At :1723 the cause passes isNativeError(cause) || cause instanceof Error, and :1724 calls getStackString(cause); cause.stack is undefined or caught, so :1709 calls ErrorPrototypeToString(cause), which reads cause.name through DOMException.prototype's getter on a non-DOMException receiver and throws. Nothing catches it, so util.inspect throws where the hardened top-level path prints [object DOMException]. The first commit's stated goal was to not throw on throwing getters; this sibling site of the same class was missed. Remedy: catch around getStackString(cause) at :1724 and skip the de-duplication.

    Verification: getStackFrames at src/js/internal/util/inspect.js:1723-1724 calls getStackString(cause) with no guard. getStackString 1702-1710 falls to ErrorPrototypeToString(error) (1709), which performs Get(cause, "name"). formatRaw 1417-1418 calls formatError outside the try at 1478-1511, so the TypeError propagates to the util.inspect caller.

… be strings

- `getStackFrames` read the stack of the `cause` with no guard, so
  `util.inspect(new Error("a", { cause: { __proto__: DOMException.prototype } }))`
  threw. `getStackString` now returns undefined when an error has no text,
  and both of its callers handle that.
- A `name`, a `message` or an own `stack` that cannot be a string (a
  `toString` that throws, a Symbol) threw from `String()`, `indexOf` or
  `includes`. `formatError` and `removeDuplicateErrorKeys` catch that.
- When the message getter throws, `formatError` no longer rewrites the first
  line of a stack that already has the message in it.
…roxy ends

`Function.prototype[Symbol.hasInstance]` never returns in JavaScriptCore for
a prototype chain that cycles through a Proxy, so `emitter.emit("error", x)`
and `assert.ok(false, x)` did not return for such an `x`. The helper now
walks the chain itself and gives up after 1000 proxies: the value is then
no error, as before this branch. `assert.fail(x)` returns for it too.

Tests: the cyclic chain through `emit` and `assert.ok`, and a failed
comparison whose operand keeps its stack frames and has a DOMException as
its cause.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Re-reviewed the latest commits. Beyond the inline nit, I checked the new bounded walk in src/js/internal/shared.ts against the Proxy-cycle case from my earlier comment (it now returns false instead of spinning, and a revoked or throwing getPrototypeOf trap still propagates as in Node), and the instanceof Error sites left untouched in src/js/internal/assert/assertion_error.ts:301-303 and src/js/node/assert.ts:534 match Node's own source for those lines, so excluding them is correct. The deliberate divergence in emitError (cross-realm native errors thrown as themselves) is a maintainer call worth a human look.

Extended reasoning...

The change adds a shared isError helper (Error.isError plus a Proxy-bounded prototype walk) and routes node:events emitError, seven node:assert sites, and three stream/repl copies through it, plus hardens util.inspect formatError against throwing getters; it touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface. The two commits since the prior review add the proxy bound that addresses the hang case previously raised; the node:test serializeRunError gap remains deferred by the author. Not approving because the PR changes observable node:events/node:assert semantics across many entry points with an intentional divergence from Node that a maintainer should endorse.

…first line

formatError put the name into the first line of the stack with
String.prototype.replace. That call expands `$&`, `$$`, "$`" and `$'` in the
name. It now cuts the `Error: ` prefix and joins the strings.

The tests for a name, a message or a stack that cannot be a string now
compare the whole text.

I reviewed the current head (through 60bd935) and found no bugs; the two things I raised on earlier pushes are addressed here. Because the change alters which values emit('error') and the assert family rethrow verbatim, and the description itself asks a maintainer to decide the Error.isError vs prototype-walk question, a human look is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • isError in src/js/internal/shared.ts: uses $isObject/$isProxyObject and a load-time Object.getPrototypeOf, so a replaced globalThis.Error or Error.isError cannot steer it; the 1000-Proxy cap ends the cycle case that previously spun, and a throwing getPrototypeOf trap still propagates as in Node.
  • All four local isError copies and the lazy util.isError in stream/iter/utils.ts are rewired; no stale isNativeError import or unused util binding is left behind.
  • inspect.js: the startsWith/slice rewrite no longer expands $&/$' in a name and is skipped when the message getter throws; a non-string message now yields pos = -1, which lands on the same search start Node reaches via NaN.
  • The toEndWith("") rows flagged last time now assert toBe(error.stack).
Extended reasoning...

The diff adds a shared isError to src/js/internal/shared.ts and routes node:events emitError, seven node:assert sites, assertion_error copyError, and the stream/iter helpers through it, plus try/catch guards around err.stack/name/message/errors reads in internal/util/inspect.js; it touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface. Both of my prior inline findings (unbounded Proxy-cycle walk; vacuous toEndWith("") assertions) are fixed in the current head, and the bug-hunting run ended on a dry streak with no new findings. I did not approve because the PR deliberately diverges from Node in two places (other-realm native errors thrown as themselves; a bounded walk instead of a RangeError), leaves node:test's serializeRunError on Error.isError by design, and the description explicitly asks a maintainer to rule on the predicate choice, which is a design call rather than a correctness check.

Pushed 57cd060, d92fd0a and 60bd935.

Not changed. The review threads have the reasons.

The PR body is current: the bound of the prototype walk, the costs, and the places that are left as they are.

A note on landing order. #46111 deletes the ObjectPrototypeToString capture from src/js/internal/util/inspect.js, because its last reader there moves to native code and the lint rejects a capture with no reader. This PR reads that capture in formatError.

The two diffs do not touch the same lines, so git reports no conflict in either order. The merged file then calls ObjectPrototypeToString with no declaration, and the fallback of formatError throws a ReferenceError.

…-error

Main typed the files of this branch and renamed inspect.js and
node-shims.js to .ts. The changes of this branch move to those files:

- inspect.ts is the file of #45254 after its merge with main.
- events.ts keeps the `shared` binding of main and takes `isError` from it.
- iter/utils.ts and repl/node-shims.ts use the shared `isError` in place
  of the typed private copies of main.
- event-emitter.test.ts has the imports of both sides.

Merged main (11c3671) into this branch: 57d9702. The branch had conflicts, because #45631 typed these files and renamed inspect.js and node-shims.js to .ts.

Checked on a local debug build: the five test files pass (382 tests), 76 of them fail with the src/ of main, and 235 Node tests for assert, events, domain, util and repl pass. bun lint, bun fmt and the type check of the built-in modules pass. The PR body has the line numbers and the numbers of the merged files.
