Enforce workspace Clippy rules for cognitive complexity, argument count, and wildcard imports. Refactor document processing, automation, and UI code into focused helpers and parameter types, and restore the affected translation labels. The changes retain existing document and UI behavior.
Targeted tests for annotation, forms, engine, signing, measure, XFDF, and xtask passed locally. The page-pointer guard, open-worker tests, and UI-scale test also passed.
The full local gate reached UI tests; GPU-dependent tests could not obtain a graphics adapter on this host. CI runs the full gate and platform builds on the PR head.
Anything a reviewer should look at first
The UI canvas and annotation refactors move existing state and operations into smaller helpers. Review those paths for behavior preservation, especially pointer handling and annotation updates.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Refactor
Improved code organization across document editing, annotations, forms, redaction, signing, and interface workflows, with existing behavior preserved.
Documentation
Updated guidance for workspace lint settings and the annotation API.
Tests
Expanded coverage for page-background detection and reorganized several existing tests without changing their expectations.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.

Walkthrough
The workspace enables three denied Clippy lints and sets a cognitive-complexity threshold. Across the workspace, modules replace wildcard imports with explicit imports. Several implementations and tests are reorganized into helpers, with described behavior and assertions retained.
Changes: Workspace lint enforcement and code decomposition
The workspace denies cognitive_complexity, too_many_arguments, and wildcard_imports; the cognitive-complexity threshold is 30. xtask inherits workspace lints. Modules across the workspace replace wildcard imports with explicit imports. CLAUDE.md adds lint requirements for new crates and production crate roots.
Annotation, document, and PDF processing helpers crates/annot/src/*, crates/edit/src/*, crates/forms/src/*, crates/preflight/src/lib.rs, crates/print/src/sheets.rs, crates/redact/src/*, crates/sign/src/pdf/changes.rs, crates/xfa/src/pdf.rs
Annotation appearance and creation, text interpretation and rewriting, form updates, preflight checks, label-sheet layout, redaction, signature-change classification, and XFA serialization delegate work to helpers. The summaries describe retained rules and validation in these paths.
UI interaction and rendering helpers crates/ui-egui/src/*
Canvas drawing, command dispatch, dialogs, editing, comment gestures, image editing, form navigation, measurement snapping, and combine workflows are split into helpers and context structures. The summaries describe existing interaction and dispatch behavior as retained.
Runtime dispatch and test updates crates/js/src/formcalc/builtins.rs, crates/xfa/src/tests.rs, crates/edit/src/tests.rs, crates/js/src/tests.rs, crates/forms/src/tests.rs, crates/automation/tests/it/automation.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/platform/open_worker/tests.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/it/signing.rs
FormCalc built-in dispatch is split into helpers. Tests are reorganized into focused helpers; page-background tests add coverage for fill, transform, and clipping cases, and hostile FormCalc tests add input and execution cases.
No confirmed issue in the reviewed changes blocks merging after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 76ce8
The inspected changes preserve existing edit permissions, signing authority, and edit rollback behavior. Public Rust callers must adopt new input types. No introduced security issue was established, but incomplete coverage of the broad refactor prevents a minimal-risk assessment.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected timestamp refactor does not expand signing authority: TimestampSigner borrows the same caller-selected key, certificate, and chain previously accepted separately. Production timestamp consumers continue to validate the authority's returned response before embedding its token.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — ReplaceText and StyleAnnotation remain classified as annotation-permission operations, with Session checking permission before mutation. The annotation helpers retain their prior validation and mutation ordering. Direct helper use without Session permission enforcement was already possible and was not introduced by these bundles.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The forms extraction preserves permission-gated initiation, field/widget identity, commit-before-navigation ordering, cancellation, and pending-edit precedence. Pointer release still clears pressed state, and editor drag transfer uses the same current-frame primary-button state as before.

apps/pdfcraft-cli inherits the workspace lints, and wildcard_imports = "deny" applies to apps/pdfcraft-cli/src/check.rs:3. The CI Clippy command can therefore fail on this import. Replace it with explicit imports instead of weakening the workspace denial.

Align the restore_* doc comments with their helper bodies.
restore restores panels, combine view, zoom, and recent files before calling restore_layout_prefs. The four comments therefore describe the wrong helper contents. Include field highlighting and date language in the corrected descriptions.

Windows arm64 packaging fails, and macOS would too: crates/automation/src/dispatch.rs:745 and :758 call signing::cert_json, but the explicit import list no longer brings in signing. Those blocks are cfg(target_os = "macos") / cfg(target_os = "windows"), so the Linux gate and FreeBSD don't compile them. Adding signing to the import would be unused on Linux; super::signing::cert_json(...) at both call sites avoids that.
Other points:
crates/ui-egui/src/menus.rs:257: "⋯" is now translated as "More", which changes the overflow menu title in English. This is unrelated to the lints.
crates/preflight/src/lib.rs (check_annotation): a forbidden annotation no longer skips the later per-object checks (the old continue is now a helper return). Minor, but it changes the check flow.
set_style / add_text_replacement in pdfcraft-annot change their public signatures (StyleChange, TextReplacement).
Gate (ubuntu) was still queued at the time of review.
dispatch.rs now calls super::signing::cert_json(...) at both cfg-gated sites instead of importing signing, so nothing is unused on Linux and the macOS/Windows blocks compile again.
menus.rs: translate is back to tl!(english), so the overflow menu title is ⋯ as on main.
preflight: check_annotation returns whether the annotation was forbidden, and check_one_object returns there, so a forbidden annotation again skips every later check for that object — the old continue restored.
Also fixed while verifying (found by the wasm gate): the explicit import lists no longer reached platform-gated items under wasm32 in render/raster/pool.rs, js/formcalc/access.rs, ui-egui/app/input.rs and ui-egui/workflows/combine_ui/{parts,session}.rs.
On set_style / add_text_replacement: keeping the StyleChange / TextReplacement signatures. Both exceed clippy's 7-argument default and this PR adds too_many_arguments = "deny" workspace-wide, so bundling the parameters is what the new lint requires; the original signatures would put the branch back in violation or need a suppression.
…s, split the grid's scrolling out
The merge of main left the organize-grid arrow call inside `zoom_shortcuts`,
which has neither `ctx` nor `arrows`, so the crate did not compile. It goes
back to `shortcuts`, ahead of `zoom_shortcuts`. Main's stricter Clippy gate
(storytold#4897) also put the grid's scroll-area closure one over the
cognitive-complexity limit; the reveal / follow scrolling moves into
`scroll_to_page`, with no change in behaviour.
