XFA scripts: the bare event is named as the field event, of type Field, and its target has numPages - #4546
Builds on #3575: its commits are included here until it merges. This PR's own change is the last commit.
What this changes
XFA scripts can use two event objects: xfa.event and the bare event. Until now PdfCraft named the bare event by the XFA activity (click, change, …), gave it no type, and its target (the document, from #3575) had only exportDataObject. Scripts that branch on event.name or event.type, or read event.target.numPages, took the wrong path.
After this PR the bare event in an XFA script has:
event.name: the matching field event's name.
Measured black-box in another viewer on a synthetic form: a click script sees Mouse Up, a change script Keystroke, an exit script Blur.
Taken from the event table in the public JavaScript API reference for PDF forms, not measured: enter → Focus, mouseDown → Mouse Down, mouseUp → Mouse Up, mouseEnter → Mouse Enter, mouseExit → Mouse Exit, calculate → Calculate, validate → Validate.
Activities with no field event in that table (initialize, ready, layoutReady, docReady, preSign, postSign, and the rest) keep their XFA name, as before.
event.type: Field (measured) for the field events above. Activities that keep their XFA name have no type, as before.
event.target.numPages (measured): the document's page count. It is a read-only getter that calls the same function as xfa.layout.pageCount(), so the two always agree. exportDataObject is unchanged.
xfa.event is unchanged. Its name is still the activity and its target is still the form node.
The code is field_event and install in crates/js/src/xfa.rs. FormCalc's $event has no bare event, so it is unaffected.
How you verified it
check_local.sh … pdfcraft-js pdfcraft-engine (fmt, clippy -D warnings and tests in the worktree's own target dir) printed [fix/xfa-acrobat-event-fields] ok: clippy clean, tests passed=466 (not pushed).
cargo fmt --check
clippy with -D warnings on the crates I changed

cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask assets: not run, since no crate boundary or asset changed. cargo xtask parity passes with the updated entry.
Tests.
crates/js/src/tests.rs::in_xfa_scripts_event_names_the_field_event_and_its_target_counts_the_pages is a unit test. It runs one script for thirteen activities on a 3-page document. The script returns event.name, event.type, event.target.numPages, xfa.layout.pageCount() and xfa.event.name. The activities are the ten mapped ones plus initialize, docReady and preSign, which stay unmapped.
crates/engine/src/tests.rs::xfa_scripts_see_the_field_event_name_type_and_page_count_in_event is an engine test. It opens a real two-page XFA form through Session. A button's click script, run the way the app runs it (run_javascript), writes event.name|event.type|event.target.numPages|xfa.layout.pageCount() into a field, and the field reads Mouse Up|Field|2|2. Typing into a text field then runs its change and exit scripts, which write Keystroke|Field and Blur|Field into two more fields.
Both tests were seen failing with the fix reverted. Each time I reverted only crates/js/src/xfa.rs, ran both tests and restored the file:
Whole fix reverted (git apply -R): the unit test got click|undefined|undefined|3|click and the engine test click|undefined|undefined|2.
Only the numPages accessor removed: both failed on …|Field|undefined|….
Only the change and exit arms removed: both failed, the unit test on change|undefined|… and the engine test on changed = change|undefined.
Never-crash
No new unwrap/expect/panic!/unreachable!/todo! outside tests
No indexing, slicing or arithmetic on input. field_event is a total match on the activity string and returns borrowed or static strings.
No unsafe
Any crash this fixes has a regression test: does not apply, this fixes no crash
Provenance
No asset from an Adobe product
No font files
No GPL/AGPL code
Behaviour comes from black-box observation of another viewer on a synthetic form (click, change and exit names, type, numPages) and from the public JavaScript API reference for PDF forms event table (the other seven names). No other implementation's source was read.
No new assets
Security
No paths touched
MCP and the control channel are unchanged
No network access
Parity and reach
parity/acrobat-features.toml, form.xfa-dynamic: the XFA JavaScript part of the notes now describes the bare event, saying which names were measured and which come from the reference. Both tests are listed as evidence. "Missing" now names the document-event names (prePrint, postPrint, preSave and postSave keep their XFA names).
Headless: XFA scripts already run through js_run, form_fill and the engine. No new tool is needed.
Docs: no crate README documents the event object.
Anything a reviewer should look at first
Behavior change. A script in an XFA form that tested the bare event.name == "click" now sees Mouse Up. That matches the viewer forms are written for. Code that wants the activity name can still read xfa.event.name.
No type on unmapped activities. An initialize or docReady script still sees event.type as undefined, as before. I left it out because I have no measurement for those activities, rather than guess Field.
The mapping goes by activity, not by the kind of node. An enter or exit script on a subform also sees Focus/Blur with Field. Only field scripts were measured.
mouseUp maps to Mouse Up, from the reference, like the other unmeasured names (a click was measured as Mouse Up, mouseUp itself was not).
Document events. prePrint, postPrint, preSave and postSave have document-event counterparts in the reference (WillPrint, DidPrint, WillSave, DidSave, with type Doc). They are out of scope here and listed as missing in the parity note.

New Features
Form scripts can use exportDataObject to open attached PDF files in tabs. Selecting an attachment already open from the same document returns to its tab.
Attachments that aren’t PDFs are offered for saving. Missing attachments display a notification.
Form scripts expose event details, including field event names, document page count, and attachment actions.
Bug Fixes
Click scripts run for push buttons, not text fields. Attachment-opening requests from text-field events are ignored.

Walkthrough
Adds exportDataObject support for JavaScript and XFA scripts. The engine routes eligible button-click attachment requests to the UI. The UI opens PDF attachments in tracked tabs and saves other attachment types. XFA exposes separate event objects and mapped field-event metadata.

Adds exportDataObject and OpenAttachment requests. XFA exposes separate bare event and xfa.event objects, mapped field-event metadata, and document page count. Tests and parity entries cover these APIs.
XFA effects become attachment requests. The engine runs the XFA click-script path for push buttons. Field-script attachment requests are dropped with a console message.
The UI resolves attachment names, opens attachments whose bytes contain a PDF header, and saves other attachments. Opened tabs record their source document and attachment. Integration tests cover repeated requests, duplicate names, missing attachments, and password-protected attachments.

The documented attachment and XFA event paths have no identified outstanding issue that would block merging after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 438af
Form scripts can now request opening or saving attachments. Actions remain limited to the requesting document’s attachments; PDFs open within the viewer, and saving requires a user-selected location. The reviewed flow has limited exposure, although broader security coverage remains incomplete.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A malicious form can influence which of its own attachments is opened or offered for saving during permitted script execution. The inspected attachment request does not select arbitrary filesystem source paths or another document’s attachment inventory, and non-PDF content is not launched in an external program.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — AcroForm document scripts execute before the supplied button script and contribute to the same request list. The result has no per-request distinction between those producers. This establishes shared execution-context authority, not a demonstrated bypass of the requesting document’s attachment boundary.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The host-action boundary retains document-scoped lookup and user-selected save destinations. Suggested attachment filenames remove path separators, control and bidirectional-formatting characters, and reserved device names. JavaScript execution can also be disabled globally.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The inspected initial-open flow does not substantiate recursive attachment opening before origin assignment: document construction starts with empty JavaScript output, open-time XFA execution runs initialization and calculation activities, and attachment effects from those activities are rejected. This counterevidence limits the proposed nested-tab identity failure in the current design.

Read the whole non-test change across the js, engine, automation and ui crates. The bare event in XFA scripts now carries the matching field event name and type, with other activities keeping their XFA name, and its target is a document with exportDataObject and numPages. exportDataObject becomes a bounded OpenAttachment request in both the AcroForm and XFA hosts, and the payload size is counted. It is safe to hand to a script: a field script (keystroke, format, validate, calculate) has the request noted on the console and dropped, so only a button can ask, and the viewer opens only bytes that really are a PDF (checked by header, not name), saves anything else through a picker, and reports an unknown name with a shortened text. Opening goes back to the tab already opened from that attachment. The click script for an XFA button now runs for push buttons only. The gate and SonarCloud pass at this head. I read the code and CI and did not try it in the UI.

Review notes (comment only; nothing here is an approval or a request for changes).
What I checked:
The branch also carries the attached-file work (exportDataObject, Request::OpenAttachment) from an earlier branch in the stack, so the diff against main includes it. I reviewed that part along with the PR's own: field_event() in js/src/xfa/globals.rs and the separate global event.
The bare event is now a second object, named by field_event (click is Mouse Up, change is Keystroke, exit is Blur, enter is Focus, and so on, type Field), whose target is a document exposing numPages and exportDataObject. xfa.event keeps the XFA activity name and the form node as target. Activities with no field event (initialize, ready, preSign and so on) keep their XFA name and get no type.
data_object reads cName/nLaunch from an object or positional arguments, refuses an empty name, and treats only nLaunch 1 and 2 as open. Non-array, non-callable objects only. A field script that asks to open an attached file is refused and noted on the console, since only a button may do that.
The app runs click scripts for push buttons only (field.kind == PushButton).
Checked out the PR head and ran the whole pdfcraft-xfa (128), pdfcraft-js (88) and pdfcraft-engine (373, 2 ignored) suites on Linux (CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=2): all passed, 0 failed. These include xfa_scripts_see_the_field_event_name_type_and_page_count_in_event, an_xfa_button_may_open_an_attached_file_and_other_events_may_not, run_javascript_runs_xfa_click_scripts_only_for_buttons, and the js tests in_xfa_scripts_event_names_the_field_event_and_its_target_counts_the_pages and export_data_object_opens_only_for_n_launch_1_and_2.
GitHub reports the branch as mergeable with main and CI is green.
Not checked: I did not run the ui-egui tests (a large tests/it/forms.rs addition, plus the app/files.rs handling of opening and saving attachments) or the automation tool change, and left them to CI. I did not open the app or an actual attachment. The names and types in field_event (including those "measured on a synthetic form in another viewer") come from the PR text, and I did not compare them against Acrobat. I did not revert the fix to confirm the new tests fail without it.
Where the names come from. Three were measured black-box in another viewer on a synthetic form: a click script sees Mouse Up, a change script Keystroke and an exit script Blur. The other seven come from the event table in the public JavaScript API reference for PDF forms. The Provenance section of the description says the same.
Revert checks. "How you verified it" has them: both tests were seen failing with the fix reverted. With the whole fix reverted, the unit test got click|undefined|undefined|3|click and the engine test click|undefined|undefined|2.
ui-egui and automation. My local gate runs those crates' tests too (fmt, clippy -D warnings, the tests and cargo xtask parity). The branch is being brought up to date with main and Enforce Rust coding standards via Clippy #4897's new lints, and goes through the gate again before it's pushed.
As you noticed, the diff includes #3575's commits until that PR merges. This PR's own change is the last commit.
