XFA: fields and exclusion groups that must be filled in are Required - #4537
Split out of #1566 by @EULArule, who asked for it to be taken over in two PRs. This is the required-fields part; the other (laying out a saved dynamic form whose configuration says dynamicRender is required) follows separately.
What this changes
An XFA field that must be filled in (<validate nullTest="error">) now becomes a PDF field with the Required flag. Field highlighting draws a red outline around required fields, so these fields get one too, as another viewer shows them.
Exclusion groups: a group that must be answered makes its radio group field Required. A radio button's flags are its group's, so the buttons themselves don't carry the flag.
nullTest="warning": only recommends a value, so such a field stays optional, as does one with no test.
DA 31, for example, has six such fields: the 10a accrued-leave boxes for each leave type. They start hidden. In the engine, choosing Chargeable and then Annual Leave shows Chargeable_Accrued_Leave, which now carries the flag; before this change it didn't.
The changes, all in crates/xfa:
parse.rs: must_be_filled reads nullTest on a field's or an exclusion group's <validate>.
model.rs: new Field::required and ExclGroup::required.
layout.rs: new Widget::required. A required group makes its buttons required.
pdf.rs: Ff bit 2 on a required field, or on the radio group field.
This follows #1566's approach (required from nullTest="error", radios skipped at the button level) and extends it to exclusion groups.
How you verified it
cargo fmt --check, clippy -D warnings and tests on pdfcraft-xfa and pdfcraft-engine.
New xfa::tests::fields_that_must_be_filled_in_are_required covers:
a required text field and a required check box;
a warning field and a field with no test;
a required exclusion group and an optional one.
With the pdf.rs change reverted it fails: no field is Required.
DA 31 in the engine, through the leave-type check boxes: 10a is Required once it shows.
parity/acrobat-features.toml (XFA layout note and its evidence) and crates/xfa/README.md.
Headless: form_fields reports required for these fields.
Anything a reviewer should look at first
nullTest="warning" is left optional. Designer writes it for "recommended" fields, which aren't outlined as required.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
PDF forms now mark fields as required when their validation settings require an entry. Required choice groups are marked on the group field, rather than on individual radio buttons.
Fields with warning-only validation or no required-field validation remain optional.
When a box path is already assigned to another field, the box retains its own name. New layouts preserve the generated box containing a signature.
Documentation
Updated documentation to describe required fields and choice groups, box naming, and signature preservation.

Walkthrough
The XFA parser reads nullTest="error" validation for fields and exclusion groups. Layout carries required status to widgets, and PDF output sets the Required flag on fields or radio-group parent fields. Tests and documentation cover this behavior.
Fields and exclusion groups store required status. Parsing sets it when trimmed nullTest is "error".
Carry status through layout crates/xfa/src/layout.rs
Widgets carry required status. Required exclusion groups pass that status to buttons that are not already required.
Set PDF Required flags crates/xfa/src/pdf.rs, crates/xfa/src/tests.rs, crates/xfa/README.md, parity/acrobat-features.toml
PDF output sets the flag on required non-radio fields and required radio-group parent fields. A test checks required and optional cases. Documentation and parity evidence are updated.

Merge Risk: Minimal · previous review 7f29f
The required-field behavior is supported across parsing, layout, and PDF output with no established merge-blocking risk.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 7f29f
The change affects required-field metadata in generated forms. The reviewed paths preserve field ownership and existing processing boundaries; no material security risk was found to be introduced or worsened.

No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The newly controlled outcome is Required metadata on fields in the rendered document, with downstream reporting through existing form APIs. The inspected flow does not extend that input into another tenant, service, credential, or authorization scope.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Document-authored validation remains input to the existing render-and-write boundary. The reviewed base-to-head changes serialize field flags rather than adding action execution or treating Required as authorization. External viewer-specific enforcement was not inspected.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Per-call emitter state and exclusive mutable document access preserve existing ownership and concurrency boundaries. The PR does not introduce a new retry or persistence lifecycle, and successful repeated rendering remains gated by the existing layout marker. Source inspection found no newly exposed inconsistent Required state, but does not establish transactional rollback or interruption safety for the broader writer.

Explanation
The title names the main change: XFA fields and exclusion groups that must be filled in (nullTest="error") now become PDF fields with the Required flag. The raw summary confirms the parse.rs, model.rs, layout.rs, pdf.rs and test changes implement exactly this. The title is specific and concise, and it matches the objectives.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template in its main sections. It explains the change (required fields and exclusion groups, the nullTest="error" rule, and the warning case) and lists the verification steps, including fmt, clippy, tests, and the new test. It also covers the never-crash, provenance, and parity sections, and it names the reviewer focus point. Three gaps remain. The 'Fixes #' reference is absent, but the PR is not an issue fix, so this is acceptable. The 'Docs updated' item is covered by the README mention. The checkbox list for the cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask assets commands is not ticked and is not addressed. The Security section is not addressed, although the change touches no network, MCP, or path handling, so this is minor. The description does not state the test-before-fix check result in the template's exact form, though it does say the test fails with the pdf.rs change reverted.

The fixture includes required radio groups, but the test reads only objects in the top-level Fields array. Radio children are stored under each parent’s Kids array, so a regression could set Ff bit 2 on every child while leaving the parent correct and all current assertions would still pass. The child dictionaries are valid test targets: pdf.rs writes their Ff value, and the current radio path explicitly excludes the required bit.

@coderabbitai On the nitpick about radio children (crates/xfa/src/tests.rs:375-390): done. fields_that_must_be_filled_in_are_required now walks the Kids of both required groups (answer, and second, whose later button is the required one). It checks that each group has its buttons as kids and that no button carries the Required bit itself.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Read the whole non-test change. must_be_filled treats only nullTest error as required (warning and disabled stay optional); fields and exclusion groups get a required flag from their validate element, and a group that must be answered makes each of its buttons required in the layout without touching the template. The widget carries it to the PDF as the Required field flag (bit 2, value 2) for everything except radio buttons, whose flags belong to their group: the group is created with the flag when its first button needs it and a later required button adds it to the existing group, keeping the other bits. The gate and SonarCloud pass at this head. I read the code and CI and did not open a form in a viewer.
Review notes (comment only; nothing here is an approval or a request for changes).
What I checked:
Read the full source diff (parse.rs, model.rs, layout/{draw,field,items}.rs, pdf.rs). must_be_filled treats only nullTest="error" as required (warning and the default disabled stay optional), and trims the attribute value. It is a plain Option chain, so there is no panic path.
Radio handling: a required button sets Ff bit 2 on its group field, both when the group is created and when a later button joins it, and the button's own Ff is left alone. An exclusion group's <validate> is pushed down to each button in draw_group. The group flag is only ever OR-ed in, so it cannot clear existing flags.
Checked out the PR head and ran cargo test -p pdfcraft-xfa -j 2 (CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=2, Linux): 129 passed, 0 failed, including the new fields_that_must_be_filled_in_are_required. That test covers error, warning, a check box, an exclusion group and a later required button.
GitHub reports the branch as mergeable with main and CI is green.
Not checked: I did not compare against Acrobat. The parity/ note says the outline appears when highlighting fields, and I did not look at that in a real viewer. I did not revert the fix to confirm the new test fails without it.
One minor observation, not a blocker: a push button with nullTest="error" would also get the Required bit set. The bit has no meaning on a push button, so it should be harmless.
Push buttons. You were right to flag it, and it wasn't quite harmless here. PdfCraft's field highlighting draws a red outline around every Required widget, so a push button with nullTest="error" was outlined as if it needed a value. A push button keeps no value (ISO 32000-2 §12.7.5.2.2), and Required is about the value a field must have when the form is submitted, so there's nothing for it to hold. 0e57602 leaves the flag off push buttons. fields_that_must_be_filled_in_are_required now has a required push button that must come out not Required, and it fails without the change. Image fields keep the flag, since choosing a picture fills them.
The revert check. With the Required flag never set (on fields and on radio groups), fields_that_must_be_filled_in_are_required fails at its first assertion: must comes out not Required.
The branch also has main merged in, with #4897's new lints. To stay under the cognitive-complexity limit, the radio group's field and the Required flag are now made by their own functions (f6d3582). The behavior is unchanged.
