What changes and why

Implements the remaining protective behavior for #145 on top of the resource monitors and pressure gauges merged in #1455. Rising pressure shortens transport waits and idle retention; sustained saturation refuses new work while admitted HTTP responses, HTTP/2 streams, and TCP sessions continue under their normal deadlines.

Filter activity and retained-body attribution have been extracted into independent observability PR #1515. Neither metric drives overload protection.

Behavior

  • Validated per-resource bands under runtime.overload_thresholds, with finite 0 <= scaling < saturation <= 1. Omitted resources retain defaults.
  • Actions require the off-default overload-actions Cargo feature and both runtime overload flags. Flags and bands require a restart; filter reloads preserve the server controller.
  • Effective pressure uses finite cgroup working-set pressure before heap pressure. Cgroup-local CPU PSI can drive actions; host-wide fallback remains observational. Missing readings retain their gauges but expire from action decisions after ten samples.
  • Connect, HTTP/1 header, and upstream idle budgets scale from their original values using 1 - 0.9 * pressure. Body and total stream/session deadlines are preserved. Returned idle connections age out sooner; active connections are not cleared.
  • HTTP/1 keep-alive is disabled above pressure 0.5 and restored at 0.4. Response commitment rechecks the signal after awaited filters. HTTP/2 receives no connection-specific header.
  • Three consecutive raw saturated samples refuse new data sockets before TLS, reject new HTTP requests/HTTP/2 streams with 503 and Retry-After, close new TCP sessions, and fail /ready. Three samples below saturation recover each resource. Management listeners and /healthy remain available.
  • Memory pressure requests at most one allocator purge worker per sampler. The action gauge reports completed success. Startup/shutdown own and join housekeeping work, clear only their controller, and preserve sibling servers' state.
  • Pressure and action metrics carry reusable server-controller slots, keeping concurrent servers distinct and retained series bounded by peak live controllers. Existing hard limits remain independent backstops.

Allocator safety

Epoch refresh and allocated-byte reads now use safe tikv-jemalloc-ctl APIs. One private mallctl call remains for the argument-free arena-purge command because the typed API does not expose it. Its reason and safety contract are documented beside the call. Default and non-Unix builds retain forbid(unsafe_code). Only Unix builds with overload-actions use deny(unsafe_code) plus the documented local exception; this exception still needs maintainer agreement.

#1514 tracks adopting a safe purge API, removing the exception, and restoring forbid(unsafe_code). If maintainers require zero local unsafe code before merge, removing the purge action is a separate, explicit contract decision.

Review fixes

  • Registered overload-actions in the startup experimental-feature catalog. This fixes the shared unit/Hyper/coverage failure in every_experimental_manifest_feature_is_listed and includes enabled overload actions in the operator-facing experimental warning. The manifest guard and experimental marker are preserved.

  • Rebased onto main at d5844c1f (v0.8.0), preserving its Policy feature/profile validation, FIPS test environment, dependency updates, and release changes. The overload entry remains under Unreleased.

  • Corrected the Mermaid sequence label; reproduced the original parser failure and validated the corrected diagram with Mermaid.

  • Strengthened the pressure-isolation regression to start both servers at distinct nonzero pressures and verify the sibling is unchanged after reset.

  • Extracted the two independent attribution gauges, their tests, and their documentation for separate review. The branch-hook coverage fix requested in review belongs to that observability PR.

Validation

  • Current CI-fix validation: reproduced the exact manifest/catalog failure before the fix. All 31 startup-check tests then passed in each of the Hyper CI profile (overload actions off) and the Pingora compatible-feature profile (overload actions on). Focused server Clippy with warnings denied and workspace formatting passed.

  • Previous rebase checks: all three Policy-profile harness tests passed on each backend; six server overload unit tests, ten Pingora/eight Hyper overload integration scenarios, and three schema cases per backend passed. The changed harness passed Clippy on both backends; workspace formatting passed. Mocked Make checks verified Cargo artifact paths, explicit binary overrides, failed-build handling, and preservation of the FIPS provider environment in integration and conformance recipes.

Earlier feature validation:

  • 40 affected server unit tests passed, including nonzero sibling isolation and sampler shutdown.
  • Allocator unit checks and the real binary live-allocation wiring test passed with safe statistics APIs.
  • 10 Pingora and 8 Hyper overload integration scenarios passed; three overload schema tests passed on each backend.
  • Complete make lint and all three Hyper Clippy passes passed.
  • Make binary-selection checks passed for paths with spaces, custom target paths, explicit caller overrides, backend selection, and stopping after build failures. Main's shared harness remains selected.
  • Mermaid validation reproduced the old parser failure and accepted the corrected diagram.

The design and end-to-end flow and functional example document the operating boundaries.

Summary by CodeRabbit

Walkthrough

This pull request adds experimental, feature-gated overload actions. It adds configurable pressure bands, server-scoped action state, protocol admission and timeout controls, readiness responses, metrics, jemalloc purging, tests, documentation, and build tooling.

Changes: Overload Actions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pressure configuration and decisions
crates/core/src/config/runtime.rs, crates/core/src/overload.rs, tests/schema/tests/suite/edge_cases.rs
Runtime configuration adds overload_actions and per-resource thresholds. The monitor validates bands, tracks sample freshness and CPU source, and derives keep-alive, readiness, and purge actions.
Server sampling and action lifecycle
Cargo.toml, crates/server/Cargo.toml, crates/server/src/*
The server registers the optional jemalloc purge callback and manages overload housekeeping, per-server pressure and action metrics, asynchronous purge work, startup checks, reload diagnostics, and shutdown cleanup.
Protocol signal wiring and enforcement
crates/protocol/src/overload.rs, crates/protocol/src/pipelines.rs, crates/protocol/src/http/*, crates/protocol/src/tcp/*
Listener pipelines share overload signals with protocol handlers. Hyper and Pingora paths reject saturated work, scale eligible timeouts, and disable HTTP/1 keep-alive under pressure.
Validation, examples, documentation, and build support
tests/integration/*, tests/utils/*, Makefile, xtask/src/*, examples/*, docs/*, CHANGELOG.md
Tests cover overload actions, recovery, feature gates, and protocol behavior. Documentation and examples describe configuration and observability. Build tooling resolves test binaries from Cargo artifacts.

Minor follow-up Move the heap purge off the housekeeping runtime thread.

973-974: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Move the heap purge off the housekeeping runtime thread.

apply_overload_actions calls run_heap_purge() synchronously on the single-thread housekeeping runtime. That runtime also drives the FD, memory, and circuit-eviction loops. Nothing bounds the purge duration, so each engaged sample can stall those loops. Run the purge on a blocking thread and skip a sample while a purge is still in flight.

Minor follow-up Add an example config and a functional integration test for overloadactions.

298-299: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add an example config and a functional integration test for overload_actions.

runtime.overload_actions has no example configuration and no integration test. The overload_gauges feature has both: examples/configs/observability/overload-gauges.yaml and tests/integration/tests/suite/examples/overload_gauges.rs, which starts the binary from that example. AGENTS.md requires an example configuration with a functional integration test for new capabilities, and it requires README regeneration.

The field's doctest in crates/core/src/config/runtime.rs covers YAML parsing. The overload_actions_without_gauges_warns test in crates/server/src/startup_checks.rs sets the field on a constructed Config. No test starts the server from YAML with the flag enabled. The startup read in crates/server/src/server.rs:876 is therefore not exercised by any test that enables the flag.

Create examples/configs/observability/overload-actions.yaml, based on the gauges example, with both flags enabled:

runtime:
  overload_gauges: true
  overload_actions: true

Add tests/integration/tests/suite/examples/overload_actions.rs, modeled on overload_gauges.rs. The test should start the binary from the new example and assert the startup behavior and the metrics that the enabled actions produce.

Run cargo xtask sync-example-readme --fix to regenerate the example README.

Nitpick Test the production scaletimeout formula, not a copy in the test module.

1400-1401: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Test the production scale_timeout formula, not a copy in the test module.

The three timeout tests call scale_timeout_by_pressure, a copy defined in the test module. They never call scale_timeout. A change to the production formula or threshold would not fail any of them. Move the formula into a private helper that takes pressure, make scale_timeout call it with peak_pressure(), and point the tests at that helper. The helper tests cover the arithmetic and threshold. They do not exercise the peak_pressure() read in scale_timeout.

Suggested fix
 pub fn scale_timeout(base: Duration) -> Duration {
-    let pressure = peak_pressure();
-    if pressure <= IDLE_CEILING {
-        return base;
-    }
-    let fraction = 1.0 - (1.0 - TIMEOUT_FLOOR_FRACTION) * pressure.clamp(0.0, 1.0);
-    base.mul_f64(fraction.max(TIMEOUT_FLOOR_FRACTION))
+    scale_timeout_by_pressure(base, peak_pressure())

 }

Remove the test-module copy, fn scale_timeout_by_pressure at crates/core/src/overload.rs:1419-1425, so the tests call the production helper.

Major follow-up Feature-gated overload test runs a default-feature praxis binary.

30-35: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Feature-gated overload test runs a default-feature praxis binary.

PraxisProcess runs the binary returned by praxis_bin(). When no binary exists at the resolved path, the harness builds praxis-proxy with default features (tests/utils/src/proxy.rs:19-30, backend_build_args() at lines 66-76). overload-actions is not a default feature, so that binary starts with actions disabled. It logs that runtime.overload_actions requires --features overload-actions.

The pressure gauge is still exported, so the wait at overload_actions.rs:33-35 succeeds. The wait for fail_readiness at line 48 cannot succeed without engaged actions. It then panics after 12 seconds.

The harness reuses an existing binary without checking its features. A default-feature binary left at target/debug/praxis causes the same failure on later runs. Build the binary with the features the suite requires, and do not reuse a binary built with different features.

Nitpick Add a test for dropping the housekeeping owner while a purge is blocked.

1549-1555: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Add a test for dropping the housekeeping owner while a purge is blocked.

HousekeepingTasks::drop cancels the loops and joins the housekeeping thread with no deadline. That thread's runtime does not stop until in-flight spawn_blocking work returns, so a blocked purge holds the drop.

No current test covers this path. an_in_flight_purge_does_not_block_sampling_or_queue_another uses a standalone blocking task and never drops an owner. housekeeping_tasks_spawn_without_panicking drops owners with no purge in flight. A change to this shutdown wait would not fail a test.

Add a test that:

  • starts a housekeeping owner with a purge blocked on a channel,
  • drops the owner on another thread, and
  • asserts that the drop returns only after the purge is released.

The owner calls praxis_core::overload::run_heap_purge directly, so this test needs a seam that lets it inject a blocking purge.

record_utilities_noop_without_recorder shares one test process with the tests that call install_prometheus_recorder(). After one of those tests installs the global recorder, is_recorder_installed() stays true for the rest of the process. Whether this test reaches the early return in set_overload_action and the other setters then depends on test scheduling. The test also has no assertions, so it only fails if a call panics.

Either run this check in its own process, or rename it to describe what it verifies:

Nitpick Wait for one sampler interval before asserting that no action series exists.

134-143: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Wait for one sampler interval before asserting that no action series exists.

actions_without_gauges_remain_disabled scrapes immediately after two requests. If the overload_gauges gate regressed, the first overload sample runs about one second after startup and publishes every praxis_overload_action series at 0. The absence assertion can therefore pass before that sample runs.

Allow at least one sampler interval to elapse before the scrape. Pressure is not required. The sampler publishes inactive action series on every tick.

Nitpick Cover the overload sampler's shutdown in a feature-gated test.

1580-1585: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Cover the overload sampler's shutdown in a feature-gated test.

stopping_housekeeping_clears_the_signal_and_action_gauges uses fully_limited_runtime(), which leaves overload_gauges off. housekeeping_loops adds overload_gauge_loop only when overload_gauges is set, so this test never starts the sampler. A sampler that keeps running after drop(task) cannot fail this test.

Setting overload_gauges: true alone does not cover this path. With overload_actions off, sample_overload returns before publish_overload_actions runs. A gauges-only sampler never updates the action signal or the action gauges, so the reset assertions cannot observe it.

Covering the path requires a test gated on cfg(feature = "overload-actions"), with both overload_gauges and overload_actions enabled. The sampler also samples only after its first SAMPLE_INTERVAL tick, so a test that drops the task immediately never runs a sample. A deterministic seam is needed to make a post-shutdown sample observable. Examples include a test-only hook on the sampling interval, or a test-only record of publish calls. Asserting the default action state after drop cannot detect a surviving sampler that publishes default values.

Nitpick Skip the heap purge task when no allocator callback is registered.

1039-1041: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Skip the heap purge task when no allocator callback is registered.

When actions are enabled without a set_heap_purge call, poll_heap_purge starts a spawn_blocking task on each sample while memory pressure stays above idle. run_heap_purge returns false without doing work. The published purge_heap value is false either way, so the result is correct. The extra task is still wasted work.

Add an availability check to praxis_core::overload and test it before the spawn. The change is small: one pub fn and one condition.

Nitpick Add a wiring test that fails when the binary's jemalloc global allocator is removed.

37-40: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a wiring test that fails when the binary's jemalloc global allocator is removed.

jemalloc_purge_succeeds runs in the library test executable. That executable uses the system allocator because crates/server/src/lib.rs declares no #[global_allocator]. The only declaration is in crates/server/src/main.rs. If that declaration is removed, the test still passes. No integration test checks allocations in the shipped binary. The purge callback would still return true, but jemalloc would not serve the process allocations that the purge is meant to release.

Keep jemalloc_purge_succeeds. Add a check that reads jemalloc's stats.allocated before and after a large allocation, and asserts that the value increases. Refresh the jemalloc statistics epoch before each read. Run the check in the binary's test target, so the binary's global allocator applies. Gate it with overload-actions, matching the allocator module.

Do not assert that purging reduces stats.allocated. Purging releases unused pages and frees no live allocation, so allocated bytes do not change. Residency, such as stats.resident, is the statistic that decreases after purging.

main.rs forbids unsafe_code. Keep any raw mallctl call in crates/server/src/allocator.rs, and call a safe helper from the test in main.rs.

Nitpick Test the host-CPU locality filter through sampleoverload.

1428-1431: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Test the host-CPU locality filter through sample_overload.

The current wiring applies monitor.action_pressures(pressures) at crates/server/src/server.rs:985, before track_cpu_source and apply_overload_actions. The host-CPU test in crates/core/src/overload.rs:1428-1431 calls Monitor::action_pressures directly. No test calls sample_overload. Passing raw pressures at line 985 would leave the current tests passing. A host-only CPU sample could then reach EngagedActions::from_pressures and affect keep-alive and readiness.

Add a test that reaches this filter through sample_overload. The pressure input must be injectable, because Monitor::observe reads the kernel files directly. A seam at that boundary lets the test supply a host-only CPU reading. Call sample_overload with actions enabled, then assert that the returned EngagedActions leaves disable_keepalive and fail_readiness unset.

Keep the test at the caller boundary. Do not add a second action-derivation path for the test to call. The test should observe the actions that sample_overload returns.

Minor follow-up Make the PRAXISBIN path follow a Cargo build.target set in configuration.

831-831: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Make the PRAXIS_BIN path follow a Cargo build.target set in configuration.

When build.target comes from Cargo configuration and CARGO_BUILD_TARGET is unset, the test-integration recipe runs cargo build into target/<triple>/debug/. It then sets PRAXIS_BIN to target/debug/praxis. The subprocess tests then either panic because that file is missing, or run a stale binary. The same path formula already exists in resolve_praxis_bin_path(), so this is not a new defect in the PR. The test-integration recipe and the harness should derive the target directory from the same source Cargo uses.

Minor follow-up Resolve the praxis binary path from Cargo's configured target.

128-131: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value

Resolve the praxis binary path from Cargo's configured target.

When build.target is set in Cargo configuration and CARGO_BUILD_TARGET is unset, resolve_praxis_bin_path looks for target/debug/praxis. Cargo places the build output in a target-triple subdirectory, so the assertion in build_praxis_bin fails after a successful build. Locate the executable from the build output, for example with cargo build --message-format=json, or read the configured target. The same failure exists before this change, so this is a follow-up.

Nitpick Wait for a periodic sampler publication in the lifecycle test.

1684-1688: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Wait for a periodic sampler publication in the lifecycle test.

spawn_housekeeping_tasks publishes once synchronously before it returns. The wait loop at crates/server/src/server.rs:1686 therefore exits on that initial publication. The test can pass without the sampler running its first periodic tick, so it does not verify the sampler path it names. Capture the count after spawn and wait for it to increase.

Suggested fix

Nitpick Skip the Arc::makemut copy when overload scaling cannot change the connection options.

157-157: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Skip the Arc::make_mut copy when overload scaling cannot change the connection options.

select_peer in the Hyper upstream and execute in upstream_peer.rs call Arc::make_mut on every attempt. The Arc is shared with the source Upstream, so each call clones ConnectionOptions and allocates a new Arc, even when overload actions are off. The cost is one small allocation per attempt. Treat this as an optional refactor.

The skip condition must be !signal.is_enabled() && !signal.is_scaling(). When overload actions are enabled, scale_connection sets idle_timeout from None to Some(...), so the call must run. When pressure is active, the call must run to apply the shortened timeouts. When neither flag is set, scale_timeout returns its input unchanged, and the 1 ms floor does not alter zero or sub-millisecond values.

Add a helper beside scale_connection that applies this condition:

/// Scale a shared connection only when overload actions or pressure can change it.
#[cfg(any(feature = "pingora", feature = "hyper", test))]
pub(crate) fn scale_connection_if_active(
    connection: &mut std::sync::Arc<praxis_core::connectivity::ConnectionOptions>,
    signal: &praxis_core::overload::Signal,
) {
    if signal.is_enabled() || signal.is_scaling() {
        scale_connection(std::sync::Arc::make_mut(connection), signal);
    }
}
Call-site changes
-    crate::overload::scale_connection(Arc::make_mut(&mut peer.connection), &listener.overload);
+    crate::overload::scale_connection_if_active(&mut peer.connection, &listener.overload);
-    crate::overload::scale_connection(Arc::make_mut(&mut upstream.connection), &signal);
+    crate::overload::scale_connection_if_active(&mut upstream.connection, &signal);

Keep the helper's predicate in sync with scale_connection. If the scaling rules change, update both.

Render compiler diagnostics when the test-binary build fails.

cargo build --message-format=json > "$$artifacts" captures rustc diagnostics in the temporary file. When the build fails, set -e exits before artifact-path runs, and the EXIT trap deletes the file. The developer may then see only Cargo's final failure output.

Use json-render-diagnostics to render diagnostics to stderr while preserving the JSON artifact messages for xtask artifact-path.

Could we move praxis_filter_active and praxis_body_buffer_bytes into a separate observability PR? Neither drives overload protection, so they seem independently reviewable and useful. That would help keep this PR focused on protective behavior.

Also, it looks like we now have unsafe code, which our repo forbids. @shaneutt @alexsnaps How should we handle this? For now, we could have something simple that the code must explain why unsafe must be used, and additionally, open up a GitHub issue to track whenever we could technically remove that unsafe code and the action associated with that removal.

@leseb Addressed the review in new commit 0bab36a, after rebasing onto main at 29cacba.

The two independent attribution gauges are now in PR #1515, commit 8d6a03c, based directly on main. That PR includes the missing branch request-hook guard, a suspended/cancelled hook regression, body ownership tests, and a working example validated on both backends. #1487 now focuses on protective behavior, with its description and design updated to show the split.

Allocator statistics now use safe typed TiKV APIs. The remaining argument-free purge call has an explicit reason and safety contract. Default and non-Unix builds retain forbid(unsafe_code); only opt-in Unix overload builds have the local exception. Issue #1514 tracks removing that exception and restoring blanket forbid when a safe purge API is available. If project policy requires zero local unsafe code before merge, the purge action would need an explicit contract change; the current revision retains it and makes the exception clear for that decision.

The Mermaid parser error and the nonzero sibling-pressure regression are also fixed. Each inline thread has the relevant fix SHA and has been resolved.

The observability review follow-up is published in 57ca50a: response chunks reuse request-scoped gauge handles, and dedicated lifecycle tests cover TCP connect/disconnect, request-head, and response trailers. All 3,181 filter tests and both backend examples pass; its two CodeRabbit threads are also resolved.
