Problem

  • bun build --no-bundle e.css prints error: Unexpected end of input parsing: no file, line or column. The bundled build adds at /tmp/nb/e.css:4:1. No user reported this.
  • Transpiler::build_css_output (src/bundler/transpiler.rs:3093, :3102, :3123) logs parse, minify and print errors with no source or location.

Fix

  • build_css_output logs the three errors through Err::add_to_logger, as the bundled build does for parse and minify errors. The phase word goes.
  • ErrorLocation::to_location (src/css/error.rs) copies the source line. It borrowed the line (unsafe), and --no-bundle frees each file before it prints the log.
  • An error with no position reports its file. impl Display for Err<T> is deleted.
  • Verified: test/bundler/css/css-modules.test.ts (7 new tests fail on main), test/bake/dev/css.test.ts, test/bundler/esbuild/css.test.ts. Self-reviewed: 28 concerns raised, 26 addressed, 2 rejected (Notes).

Background

  • Err<T> is a CSS parse, minify or print error. Only add_to_logger can read its position outside bun_css.
  • A log message carries a copy of its source line, printed whole above a caret.
  • Considered a temporary log in build_css_output, copied out before the file is freed. It keeps the unsafe borrow. The Zig original and Real lifetimes for Source, import records and resolver results #44493 copy the line in to_location.

Downsides

  • --no-bundle prints a long CSS line whole, as the bundled build does. A 240 KB one-line sheet prints 480,117 bytes of stderr, was 63. logger: keep an excerpt of a line over 1,000 bytes wherever the error is #43313 bounds it.
  • A bundled CSS error makes one more allocation (mi_malloc 7 to 8). Release text grows by 768 bytes.
  • A bundled print error still reads Failed to generate CSS for this file (PrintError).
Notes

Before and after (bun build --no-bundle, cwd /tmp/nb):

$ printf '.a { color: red }\n.b { color: }\n}\n' > e.css
main: error: Unexpected end of input parsing
PR: error: Unexpected end of input
           at /tmp/nb/e.css:4:1

$ printf 'a { color: red; }\n@import "x";\n' > i.css
main: error: @import rules must come before any other rules except @charset and @layer parsing
PR:    2 | @import "x";
                  ^
       error: @import rules must come before any other rules except @charset and @layer
           at /tmp/nb/i.css:2:8

The bundled bun build prints the same bytes as the PR for both files. A JS or JSON error under --no-bundle already has its frame and place on main.

Decisions

Measurements (release builds, main 91e7e3b against the same commit plus this change, gdb counting breakpoints on the mi_* entry points, 3 runs each). The branch is now rebased on f2c800b, and the change is the same:

  • Valid CSS under --no-bundle: 47 allocator calls inside build_css_output on main, 47 on the PR. Instructions in the function itself: 232 to 246 (the Source, 112 bytes of stack writes).
  • Bundled CSS error, inside parse_worker::get_ast: mi_malloc 7 to 8 and mi_free 2 to 3 for a stray }, 9 to 10 and 6 to 7 for an @import after a rule, no change for an error on an empty line.
  • Failing CSS entry under --no-bundle, inside build_css_output: 8 to 5 allocator calls for a stray }, 17 to 14 for an @import after a rule.
  • Release text: 107,072,443 to 107,073,211 bytes (+768). build_css_output 2,237 to 2,879. to_location 315 to 2,116, because index_of_line_ranges::<1> (1,838 bytes on main) is now inlined into it. get_ast 26,909 to 25,764.
  • Stderr bytes, --no-bundle against bundled, on the PR: 71/71, 58/58 and 138/138 for three parse errors. Bundled stderr, main against PR: identical for 5 of 5 inputs, the 240 KB one-line sheet included. Bun.build lineText length for that sheet: 240,013 on both.
  • --no-bundle on the 240 KB one-line sheet: 63 to 480,117 bytes of stderr. On test/js/bun/css/files/foundation.min.css (valid, rejected for url(), bun build --no-bundle: keep css url() references instead of failing to parse #38528): 379 to 128,401. A one-line JS file of that size with an error at its end prints 480,108 bytes under --no-bundle on main and on the PR.
  • unsafe in src/css/error.rs: 2 to 1.

Use-after-free check. The log is read after build_css_output returns (TransformResult::init, src/bundler/options.rs:2088), and the file buffer is freed at that return. On the ASAN debug build the 22 tests of the file pass with no report. With the copy in to_location replaced by the old borrow, 6 of the 7 new tests fail: heap-use-after-free, read in <bun_ast::Location as Clone>::clone.

Self-review. 28 concerns raised, 26 addressed. Most were about the 1000-byte cap, which is gone. Rejected: stacking this PR on #38528 and #38544 (both are stalled), and opening a tracking issue for the bundled print error (it is described below).

Not changed

  • Bundled print errors. The linker discards the PrinterError (generateCompileResultForCssChunk.rs:128, :171, :207), and generateChunksInParallel.rs:329 logs a generic message with the file. Carrying the error changes CompileResult::Css, so it is a separate change. Under --no-bundle the same error now has its kind and place.
  • prepareCssAstsForChunk.rs:261 has no Source, so its message still names no file.
  • maximum_nesting_expansion and maximum_vendor_prefix_expansion are raised with no position, so they report the file only.
  • The minify arm cannot be reached on main, because --no-bundle minifies with no targets. bun build --no-bundle: minify css with the build target's browser targets #38544 and Bun.build: add cssTarget option to set CSS browser targets #40368 make it reachable.

Status

Reproduced on 1.4.2 and on a release build of main (91e7e3b), Linux x64:

mkdir -p /tmp/nb && cd /tmp/nb
printf '.a { color: red }\n.b { color: }\n}\n' > e.css
bun build --no-bundle ./e.css
# error: Unexpected end of input parsing
bun build ./e.css
# error: Unexpected end of input
#     at /tmp/nb/e.css:4:1

With this branch both commands print the second output. The fix is #46184.

CI. The diff is green. In build #130376, 178 of 181 jobs passed. The 3 other jobs did not fail on this change:

  • darwin x64 - test-bun (2 jobs) expired. No agent ran them. The same 2 jobs expired in build #129473.
  • darwin aarch64 - test-bun (1 job) stopped before it ran a test: buildkite-agent artifact download timed out after 120s.

Every job that ran its tests passed. This PR needs a maintainer to merge it, or to run the macOS jobs again.

Walkthrough

CSS build errors now use source-aware logging. The changes also update CSS import error messages and add build tests for diagnostic content, exit status, and output behavior.

Changes

CSS diagnostic reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Route CSS errors through structured diagnostics
src/css/error.rs, src/bundler/transpiler.rs, src/bundler/linker_context/prepareCssAstsForChunk.rs
CSS parse, minify, and print errors use add_to_logger with source context. Missing locations include the current source, source-line text is stored as owned data, and CSS import error messages report the error kind.
Verify CSS build diagnostics
test/bundler/css/css-modules.test.ts
Tests cover parse errors in bundled and no-bundle builds, multiple failing entry points, print errors with and without positions, exit codes, stdout, and output-file behavior.

CSS errors from bun build --no-bundle now show the file, line, and column, matching bundled builds. One small follow-up remains: for very long single-line (minified) stylesheets, the error message prints the entire line rather than a short excerpt around the error. Bundled builds already behave this way, so the PR is mergeable with this noted as a follow-up.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the let _ = e.add_to_logger(...) discards in src/bundler/transpiler.rs — the Result is infallible in practice (the write! targets a Vec and to_location only ever returns Ok), so no error is silently dropped before return None; the file/namespace borrows kept in to_location point at file_path_text, which is &'static [u8] on this path; and the remaining e.kind site in prepareCssAstsForChunk.rs:264 prints the same bytes as the removed Display impl, so bundled @ import error text is unchanged.

Extended reasoning...

The change reroutes the three CSS error sites in the --no-bundle transpiler path through Err::add_to_logger, copies the source line in ErrorLocation::to_location instead of an unsafe 'static borrow, gives position-less errors a file-only location, and removes impl Display for Err<T>; it touches no security-sensitive surface. Three inline findings were posted (an expect("int cast") panic now reachable from user CSS, unbounded line_text output for one-line sheets, and a test asserting only the last stderr block), so a human should weigh them before merging.

Transpiler::build_css_output logs parse, minify and print errors through
Err::add_to_logger, the way the bundled build logs parse and minify
errors. The messages lose their phase suffix, and an error with no
position reports its file.

ErrorLocation::to_location copies the source line. It borrowed the line
from the source, and --no-bundle frees each file before it prints the
log.
