logger: keep an excerpt of a line over 1,000 bytes wherever the error is - #43313
Stacked on #41658, which this diff includes. #41658 needs two casts to build on main (Notes, October 28). This PR has them, so it can also merge alone.
Problem
An error at the end of a long line prints the whole line and a caret line as long: 800 KB of stderr for a 400 KB file.
Location::init_or_null_impl (src/ast/lib.rs) keeps the whole line for an error in its last 80 bytes. CSS errors (src/css/error.rs) and native plugin logs (src/bundler/ParseTask.rs) always keep it.
Fix
A Location keeps an excerpt of a line over 1,000 bytes wherever the error is: 40 bytes before it and 80 after, or the last 120.
A redacted line (bunfig.toml, .npmrc) stays whole: a cut can drop the key that marks a secret.

The last two columns are the same after both branches merged main 8a0e49e (#41658 at 2aa8789, this branch at 0438b03). The main column is from 179664e.
For long-end.js, Bun.build(...).logs[0].position.lineText.length goes from 400,022 to 120, and Bun.inspect of the message from 800,115 characters to 311. #12549 has a sighting of the caret line from a user ("lots of whitespace").
What this PR adds to #41658: 4 source files and 5 test files, +584 and -35 lines, and the two casts of October 28 below. The rest of the diff is #41658.
After #41658 merges as a squash, this branch conflicts with main in the hunks that both PRs change. The fix is a merge of main that keeps this branch's side of those hunks. I do that merge when #41658 lands.
History of this PR:
September: the printer (Data::write_format) cut the line to 120 bytes.
October 25: main had rewritten that statement and added bun lint, bun check and bun fmt, which print through the same function with their own rules for a long line. A cut in the printer broke two of their tests.
The logger keeps 40 bytes before a mid-line error and 80 after (init_or_null_impl). This PR adds: a line of more than 1,000 bytes gets that excerpt for an error at its end too.
bun check and bun lint hide a line of more than 1,000 bytes (MAX_SHOWN_LINE in src/sema/driver/lib.rs, now the same constant as bun_ast::MAX_WHOLE_LINE_LEN). bun lint fits a line to the terminal and prints it whole in a pipe. bun fmt prints the line of a syntax error whole.
Location::init_or_null_impl: the parsers, the bundler and bun install. The window code moved to excerpt_range. Each end of the excerpt moves by at most 3 bytes to reach a UTF-8 boundary, so a line of invalid UTF-8 stays bounded too.
ErrorLocation::to_location: CSS errors. It kept the whole line always.
BunLogOptions::append: the line a native plugin passes to log. It kept the whole line always.
Since #46834 a Location owns a copy of its line text, so the excerpt also bounds that copy: 120 bytes, not the whole line.
The last two call Location::line_excerpt, which takes the line and the 1-based column. The CSS line lookup (get_lines_in_text) returns a line after the first one with the line break before it. line_excerpt counts the column in the line without its line breaks, as the printer does.
Readers that index the line text by column, and what each one does with an excerpt:
BuildMessage.position (user code): there is no public field for the start of the excerpt. This is the first Downsides bullet.
AsyncModule (src/jsc/AsyncModule.rs) puts lineText and column on the error of an auto-install that fails, and the printer of an uncaught error pads by that column. Nothing reaches that code since install: consolidate the open package manager pull requests #44968: auto-install resolves in the resolver, and pending_imports is never filled. An import at the end of a 400 KB line prints 171 to 273 bytes on main and on this branch for a manifest that is 404, 500 or not JSON, and for a tarball that is 404.
The error page of Bun.serve({ development: true }) (packages/bun-error) uses column for the link to the editor only.
Why 1,000 bytes and not 120: a reader that indexes the line text by column gets the wrong place in an excerpt. The review on #41658 asked to keep the whole line for an error at its end for that reason. The limit keeps that for lines of the length that people write. Two changes remove the need for it: the overlay change above, and a public field for the start column on BuildMessage.position.
Other open PRs on the same functions. Each one conflicted with this branch in a git merge-tree check at 4e978ba, before the merge of main:
The message line is not bounded. Expected ";" but found "<token>" echoes the found token whole, so a 100 KB identifier still prints 100 KB. The table and the stderr.length assertions in the tests use short tokens.
The number of diagnostics is not bounded. Each one prints about 330 bytes.
An error at the end of a line of 121 to 1,000 bytes prints the whole line and a caret line, as on main.
A redacted line of more than 1,000 bytes still prints whole.
bun fmt still prints the whole line of a syntax error. bun lint in a pipe and bun check --pretty print a line of up to 1,000 bytes whole. They build their Location themselves.
Nothing marks a cut, as for the mid-line excerpt on main. With colors on, an excerpt that starts inside a string literal is highlighted from its first quote, as the mid-line excerpt on main is.
An error inside 120 or more bytes of trailing whitespace at the end of a line of more than 1,000 bytes prints no excerpt: the excerpt is all whitespace.
A CSS file with a form feed or a lone CR as a line break still gets the text of another line, as on main.
The new tests cover bun build and bun run, an error at the start, in the middle and at the end of a line, lines of 1,000 and 1,001 bytes, a long second line after LF and after CR LF, a note on a long line, 2-byte, 3-byte and 4-byte characters, CSS on the first line, on a later line and on the last line, and bun install with a one-line package.json.
The rows for 1,000 and 1,001 bytes also assert position.column, position.lineText.length and lineText[column - 1].
src/ast/lib.rs: 10 unit tests for excerpt_range, init_or_null_impl and line_excerpt. They run under Miri (bun run rust:miri -p bun_ast, 31 pass on the merged head).
test/cli/install/redacted-config-logs.test.ts: two rows with a token of 1,100 bytes and the error at the end of the line, one through each path that carries redact_sensitive_information. They pass before and after. Each fails when its part of the plumbing is reverted: a part of the token then prints.
Instructions: user-space instructions of bun build <file>, release builds, child threads included. perf and valgrind are not in the build container, so a 60-line C program counts them with perf_event_open (PERF_COUNT_HW_INSTRUCTIONS). Median of 31 interleaved runs:
10,000 errors with a note each, short lines (20,000 locations)

318,069,006
318,847,693
+778,687 (+0.24%)
953,095 and 533,131
The deltas are smaller than the spread of the runs, but they repeat: a second round gave +277,140 and +784,108. Before the merge of main they were +267,046 and +683,534.
That is about 15 instructions for each location, and about 78 for each error whose line is cut. The first number is the new argument and the length check. The second one is excerpt_range, which makes six boundary checks where the old loops made two.
A CSS error and a native plugin log also pay one scan of their line for line breaks.
Round 2 (October, the printer cut after the merge of main): the cut is at the wrong level. Addressed: this version cuts where the Location is made.
Round 3 (this version): 22 concerns raised, 20 addressed. The main one was a bug: a CSS error on a long line after line 1 had its caret one column to the left. Fixed in line_excerpt, with tests for lines after LF and CR LF.
Rejected: drop the CSS and native plugin parts. The one-line CSS case is 720 KB of output, and both parts now have tests.
Suites run with the debug build, with a 600 s per-test timeout where the ASAN build is too slow for the default: test/js/bun/transpiler/parse-error-column.test.ts (44 pass), test/cli/install/redacted-config-logs.test.ts (100 pass), test/bundler/native-plugin.test.ts (20 pass, 1 skip), test/cli/install/bun-lock.test.ts (318 pass), test/cli/lint/output.test.ts (34 pass), test/js/bun/css/css.test.ts (1315 pass), invalid-utf8-column.test.ts, selector-list-error-recovery.test.ts, doesnt_crash.test.ts, test/cli/check/entry-points.test.ts (161 pass), test/cli/check/check.test.ts -t pretty and -t "many errors", test/cli/format/format.test.ts -t "however long it is", bun-install.test.ts -t "should report error on invalid format", test/regression/issue/03830.test.ts, 23649.test.ts, jsx-template-string-crash.test.ts, 12782.test.ts, 11793.test.ts.
On the merged head 0438b03: Miri passes 31 tests of bun_ast, and a release build passes the four test files of this PR (44, 100, 21 and 318 tests). A release build of #41658's branch at 2aa8789 fails 20 tests of parse-error-column.test.ts, the new test of native-plugin.test.ts and the caret test of bun-lock.test.ts.
On 4e4600d (main 11c3671 merged), with the debug build: Miri passes 31 tests of bun_ast, parse-error-column.test.ts passes 44 in 3 of 7 runs (in the other 4, one to four tests exceed the 5 s timeout: the debug build is slow in this container, and the slowest tests are those of #41658), redacted-config-logs.test.ts 100, native-plugin.test.ts 20 with 1 skip, css-modules.test.ts 46, and the position.lineText of a CSS error tests of css.test.ts pass. bun-lock.test.ts passes 318 with --timeout 120000: with the default 5 s, 19 tests of directory dependencies time out in this debug build, and none of them is a test that this PR changes.
On October 30, a local merge of 4e4600d with main f7607a3 has no conflict and compiles. Its debug build passes the four test files with the default timeouts: 44, 100, 20 with 1 skip, and 318.

The excerpt of a long source line is cut to about 120 bytes around the
error, but the caret under it was padded to the error's column in the
whole line. A one-line bun.lock with N bad integrity hashes printed N
caret lines of up to the line's width, so stderr grew quadratically
(22 MB for 1000 entries) and the caret never pointed at the excerpt.
Location records how many columns the window drops on the left, and
the printer subtracts that from the column and bounds the indent by the
excerpt length. An error in the last 80 bytes of a long line now gets
the window too, instead of printing the whole line.
…e start after U+2028
Drop the widened window gate: consumers that only know the column (the
bake overlay, BuildMessage.position) still get the full line for an
error in its last 80 bytes. Count the kept prefix with the same scanner
that produced the column. Start the excerpt at the line's first byte so
a line after a U+2028/U+2029 terminator does not begin with a stray
continuation byte. Port the left-trim, non-ASCII, astral, error+note,
package.json and U+2028 caret tests from #37848. Drain stdout in the
lockfile test and assert the output size is linear.
Data::write_format printed Location.line_text in full and indented the
caret by column - 1. A location keeps the whole line for an error in the
last 80 bytes of it, and a CSS location always keeps the whole line, so a
syntax error at the end of a 400 KB one-line file printed 800 KB.
write_format now prints at most 120 bytes of the line around the caret
and indents the caret by what it printed. line_text and column do not
change.
Diagnostic locations now use bounded excerpts for long source lines. Caret positions account for excerpt offsets and UTF-16 columns. Redacted lines remain uncut. Tests cover excerpt behavior across diagnostic commands and source formats.

Summary
Location excerpt selection and rendering src/ast/lib.rs
Location records the UTF-16 column where an excerpt starts. Long lines use bounded, character-aligned excerpts, and caret rendering accounts for the excerpt offset. Location construction passes through the redaction flag.
Bundler and CSS diagnostics use excerpts and record their starting columns. Related location-length handling and the shown-line limit use the updated types and shared limit.
Tests cover excerpt boundaries, caret placement, redaction, multibyte text, line separators, and long-line diagnostics across build, run, and install commands.

The description follows the required template with both sections, 'What does this PR do?' and 'How did you verify your code works?'. The 'What does this PR do?' part states the problem, the fix, the background, the downsides and the dependency on #41658. The verification part lists the new tests, the Miri run, the release and debug suite runs, and the measured cost. The description is long and dense. Its 'Notes' section and history are more detailed than the template needs. Core information is present, so the check passes.

Reproduced on main 179664e (Linux x64, release build):

bun long-end.js 2>&1| wc -c
main prints 800,159 bytes of stderr, and so does #41658. This branch prints 355. The description has the same check for a mid-line error, for one-line CSS and for a one-line package.json.
The build failed because 10 macOS jobs (test-bun, test-aot) expired before an agent took them.
62 test-aot-drawn jobs failed. They are soft failures in the drawn lanes of the ahead-of-time compiler, in tests that this PR does not touch. The build of main at the same base (134092) passed with 4 of 14 such jobs failing.
Every test-bun and test-aot job that ran passed.
On October 30, a local merge with main f7607a3 has no conflict, compiles, and passes the four test files of this PR.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline nit, I traced the index arithmetic in excerpt_around_column (src/ast/lib.rs) and ruled out a few things: the saturating_sub(40) + max_len sum cannot overflow when max_len is usize::MAX, since the line_text.len() <= max_len early return takes that path first; the lo -= 1 / hi += 1 snapping cannot underflow or run past visible because is_on_char_boundary returns true at 0 and at len; and lo <= caret <= hi holds on every branch, so both visible[lo..hi] and visible[lo..caret] are in range. The reordered left/right trim is behavior-preserving since the left-trim set is a subset of the right-trim set. I did not have a debug build to run the new tests; the PR states a merge-order dependency on #41658 that a maintainer will need to sequence.
Extended reasoning...
The Rust change is about 60 lines confined to the diagnostic printer; I read excerpt_around_column, advance_utf16_columns, is_on_char_boundary, CodepointIterator::next, and the unchanged Location::init_or_null_impl window logic to check that the printer's assumptions about line_text and column match the producers. The arithmetic is bounded on every branch, including invalid UTF-8 (each edge moves at most 3 bytes) and a column past the end of the text (clamped via min(visible.len())). The test expectations for the 2-byte, 4-byte, and CSS € cases were checked by hand against the byte offsets and they line up. The remaining reasons not to approve outright are the user-visible output change (a mid-line excerpt with no leading marker, which is a design call) and the stated merge-ordering dependency on another PR, both of which need a maintainer's judgment rather than further bug hunting.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
I re-reviewed this after the latest pushes and didn't find any bugs; the earlier exit-code nit is addressed by printedExcerpts now returning exitCode with every new test asserting it. Because this changes the shape of every CLI diagnostic excerpt (new 120/40-byte cut) and the PR states it must be rebased onto #41658, which edits the same statement, a human look at the ordering and the chosen constants would still be worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
excerpt_around_column / advance_utf16_columns in src/ast/lib.rs: window and caret arithmetic for the short-line, long-line, trailing-whitespace, and column-past-end cases — lo/hi cannot leave 0..=visible.len() since is_on_char_boundary returns true at 0 and at len, and caret is clamped before slicing, so invalid/truncated UTF-8 cannot index out of bounds.
Redaction path: redact_sensitive_information forces max_len = usize::MAX, so the token = key stays visible to the masker; the new bunfig test covers a value 143 bytes past the key.
Byte-search lint: only bun_core::trim_*, is_on_char_boundary, and CodepointIterator are used; no denied std search primitives.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR changes Data::write_format in src/ast/lib.rs so that the N | <line> / ^ excerpt for a diagnostic prints at most MAX_EXCERPT_LEN (120) bytes of line_text, starting EXCERPT_LEN_BEFORE_CARET (40) bytes before the caret or earlier when the line ends first. Two helpers were added: advance_utf16_columns walks a byte slice with bun_core::strings::CodepointIterator counting UTF-16 units (astral code points count as 2) and returns the byte offset reached, and excerpt_around_column slices the window, snaps both ends to UTF-8 char boundaries via is_on_char_boundary, right-trims it, and recomputes the caret column as the UTF-16 width of the printed bytes before the caret. Messages flagged redact_sensitive_information (bunfig.toml, .npmrc) bypass the cut. Location.line_text and column themselves are unchanged, so BuildMessage.position and the dev-server overlay are not affected. Tests: 17 new cases in test/js/bun/transpiler/parse-error-column.test.ts (build/run/CSS/install, UTF-8 2-byte and 4-byte boundaries, trailing whitespace on short and long lines, note-plus-error on one line) and one new bunfig redaction test in test/cli/install/redacted-config-logs.test.ts.
Security risks
The only security-adjacent surface is the credential-redaction path. The change explicitly disables the cut when redact_sensitive_information is set, so the key that identifies a secret cannot be sliced off before the masker sees it; the new test spawns bun install with a long token value both with NO_COLOR and FORCE_COLOR and asserts the raw value appears in neither stdout nor stderr. On the memory-safety side, I traced the index arithmetic: lo starts at hi.saturating_sub(max_len) and only decrements while is_on_char_boundary is false, which is never true at index 0; hi is capped at visible.len() and only increments while not on a boundary, which is never true at len; caret is .min(visible.len()) before visible[lo..caret], and caret >= lo holds by construction. CodepointIterator may report a width that overruns the buffer on a truncated trailing sequence, but the resulting offset is only used after clamping, so no out-of-bounds slice is reachable from malformed input. The pre-existing expect("int cast") remains guarded by location.column > 0.
Level of scrutiny
Moderate. The code is small and self-contained but is the shared output path for every diagnostic Bun prints, and it introduces a user-visible format change (long lines are now truncated). The bug-hunting run exited on dry_streak with zero findings, and my own reading of the boundary cases agrees. What remains is a judgment call, not a correctness question: the 120/40 constants, whether cutting at the printer rather than at Location creation is the right layer, and the author's own statement that #41658 must land first and that this PR needs a rebase because both edit the same statement. Those are decisions a maintainer should make, so a human look is warranted even though no defect was found.
Other factors
The one item raised in the prior review (the excerpt tests discarded proc.exited) was addressed in commit e8f7683: printedExcerpts now returns exitCode and every test asserts toBe(1) after the output expectations. Tests use Buffer.alloc fills, tempDir, test.concurrent, and drain all pipes concurrently, matching harness conventions; the reported ASAN timings (hundreds of ms per case) keep the file within budget. No CODEOWNERS rule covers the changed files, and the timeline shows no outstanding CHANGES_REQUESTED review from a third party. The existing CLI caret stays under the token... test had its expected offsets updated from 154 to 123 to match the new cut, which is consistent with the intended behavior rather than a weakened assertion.
Two notes for the maintainer who looks at the open points from the review.
Constants: 120 and 40 are not new. Location::init_or_null_impl already cuts a mid-line error to 40 bytes before it and 80 after it (src/ast/lib.rs:809-810). The printer uses the same numbers, so an excerpt has the same size wherever the error is in the line.

The new usize field grew bun_ast::Msg from 152 to 160 bytes, which put
LoadValue::Err(Msg) in the bundler over clippy's large_enum_variant
threshold. Store the start column and the highlight length as u32 (both
come from i32 ranges), so Location, Data and Msg keep their size.
Conflicts in src/ast/lib.rs: main now places the caret by the display
width of the text before it (width_before). Pass it the column relative
to the start of the windowed excerpt. The astral prefix test expects a
display width now. check_command.rs builds Location.length as u32.
An error with exactly 80 bytes from it to the end of the line keeps the
whole line, and 81 bytes cut it. An error 40 bytes into a long line
drops no prefix, and 41 bytes drop one byte with a start column of 1.
Data::write_format on main takes the caret indent from width_before and
prints the lines that a location has before its own. The cut now feeds
width_before the excerpt and the caret's column in it. Msg::write_format
cuts. Msg::write_format_uncut does not.
Each of them decides how much of a long line to show. bun lint fits its
lines to the terminal and does not cut them in a pipe. bun check shows a
line of up to 1000 bytes whole, under the lines before it. bun fmt shows
the line of a syntax error however long it is.
… into robobun/097de884/bound-printed-line-excerpt
The tree is now that branch. The cut in Data::write_format and
Msg::write_format_uncut are gone. The bound moves to where a Location is
made, on top of Location.line_text_start_column.
…e error is
A Location kept the whole line for an error in its last 80 bytes, and a
CSS error and a native plugin's log kept it always. A syntax error at the
end of a 400 KB one-line file printed the line and a caret line as long.
Location::init_or_null_impl now cuts such a line when it has more than
1000 bytes, the length above which bun check and bun lint treat a line as
not hand-written. ErrorLocation::to_location and BunLogOptions::append do
the same through Location::line_excerpt. All three record where the
excerpt starts in line_text_start_column. A redacted message keeps the
whole line: the key that marks a secret can be far from the error.
…cerpt
Location::line_excerpt took byte 0 of the text as column 1. The CSS line
lookup gives a line after the first one with the line break before it, so
the caret of an error on a long second line was one column to the left,
and a line of 999 bytes was cut. It now reads the text as the printer
does: without the line breaks around it, the column counts in what
follows the last one.
bun check's MAX_SHOWN_LINE is now the same constant.
Tests: unit tests for excerpt_range, init_or_null_impl and line_excerpt,
CSS lines after the first one, position.lineText at 1000 and 1001 bytes,
one redaction row for each way into the log, and the bun.lock test now
bounds every excerpt.

The walkthrough above describes the earlier head 4add19d, which cut the line in the printer. The current head 4e978ba cuts where the Location is made and includes #41658. A mid-line error has its caret under the token there: for an error in its middle in test/js/bun/transpiler/parse-error-column.test.ts asserts it.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the new window arithmetic for out-of-range input: excerpt_range cannot step lo below 0 or hi past the line (is_on_char_boundary returns true at index 0 and at len), and line_excerpt clamps a negative or past-the-end plugin/CSS column through saturating_sub/wtf8_offset_of_utf16_index, so a hostile native-plugin column cannot index outside the line.
Extended reasoning...
The change reworks diagnostic line excerpting in src/ast/lib.rs (new line_text_start_column field, excerpt_range, line_excerpt, redact flag plumbing) and wires it into the CSS and native-plugin log paths, with every Location constructor site updated. Two verified findings are posted inline and a further verified finding is not posted, so approval is not appropriate; the note above records only what else was examined and ruled out from the new slicing code.
src/bundler/ParseTask.rs: the plugin log location is the owned struct literal of main, with the line_excerpt and the line_text_start_column of this PR.
src/css/error.rs: ErrorLocation::to_location uses the line_excerpt of this PR and stores the line text as Box<[u8]>, without the unsafe view.

🟡 (optional) Programs that read Bun.build logs get a position.lineText that no longer lines up with position.column for any CSS line over 1,000 bytes. src/css/error.rs:186 now stores the 120-byte excerpt from line_excerpt, while column stays the column in the whole line and the JS object exposes no start column. Fix: carry the excerpt's start to every reader of position, e.g. add line_text_start_column to the object built in src/jsc/BuildMessage.rs:139 (as lineTextStartColumn), so lineText[column - 1 - start] is the token for JS, CSS and native-plugin logs alike. The PR calls this a downside; minified CSS is routinely one line over 1,000 bytes, so it is the common case. [also at: src/runtime/bake/dev_server/serialized_failure.rs:219 - Bake dev-server users lose the error underline in the overlay for CSS errors anywhere on a line over 1,000 bytes, and for JS errors at its end.]
Why this was flagged
A Bun.build of a CSS file with a line over 1,000 bytes (any minified stylesheet) hits a parse error anywhere on that line, or a JS/JSON file has an error in the last 80 bytes of such a line. src/css/error.rs:182-194 and src/ast/lib.rs:708-721 store the excerpt from excerpt_range as line_text and keep column as the column in the full line; line_text_start_column is set but src/jsc/BuildMessage.rs:117-140 (generate_position_object) never puts it on the object, so user code sees lineText of 120 characters and a column such as 60,001. Code that frames the error with lineText and column indexes past the excerpt and gets undefined, which the PR's own test documents as atColumn: undefined in test/js/bun/transpiler/parse-error-column.test.ts. On the base branch the CSS path kept the whole line at every column and the JS path kept it for an error in the last 80 bytes, so lineText[column - 1] was the token there.
Verification: A Bun.build of a CSS file with any line over 1,000 bytes that hits a parse error anywhere on that line, or a JS/JSON error in the last 80 bytes of such a line. src/css/error.rs:184-194 now stores the line_excerpt as line_text while column stays the whole-line column; on the base commit to_location stored the whole line unconditionally. src/jsc/BuildMessage.rs:117-140 never exposes line_text_start_column.

Agreed on the effect. It is the first Downsides bullet, and for CSS it applies at every column of a line over 1,000 bytes, as you say. On main a mid-line JS error already gives an excerpt under a whole-line column, so position has no way today to say where lineText starts.
A start column on position is a new public field: generate_position_object, Position in packages/bun-types/globals.d.ts, and the docs. That is a decision for a maintainer, so it is not in this PR. With #41658's field it is about 10 lines plus the types. I add it here or in a follow-up if a maintainer wants it.
The overlay part is the change of #37872, as in the other thread.
`bun build --compile --aot` (#45631) added `log_message.rs` and
`transpiled.rs` after #41658 branched. #41658 makes `Location.length` a
`u32`, so one cast goes and one comes.

Stacked on #41658, which this diff includes. #41658 needs two casts to build on main (Notes, October 28). This PR has them, so it can also merge alone.

After #41658 merges as a squash, this branch conflicts with main in the hunks that both PRs change. The fix is a merge of main that keeps this branch's side of those hunks. I do that merge when #41658 lands.

It is off for each mid-line excerpt on main, and with this PR for an error at the end of a line over 1,000 bytes too.
