Draft. Stacked on #45554 (the first two commits). It needs the answers below.

Problem

  • After css: consolidate the open CSS parser fixes #47025, .card .title { composes: base } builds and drops the declaration. The only trace is a warning at a.module.css:2:12 for line 3. A plain sheet's warning has no at line. No user reported this.
  • ParserOptions::warn (src/css/css_parser.rs:3003) logs through Log::add_warning_fmt_line_col, which takes a line, a column and no Source.

Fix

  • The CSS parse entries take the Source. Each warn site passes a byte position. The logger builds file, 1-based line, column and lineText.
  • New Log::add_warning_fmt_no_long_excerpt drops an excerpt of 120 bytes or more.
  • Verified: test/bundler/css/css-modules.test.ts (19 tests fail on main), test/bake/dev/css.test.ts. Self-reviewed: 25 concerns, 16 addressed, 9 wait for the answers.

Questions for a maintainer

  1. Is logger: locate a diagnostic at the first byte of its CR LF pair or UTF-8 sequence, and count columns from 1 after a CR #45554 wanted, with its end-of-file answer?
  2. Do logger: indent the caret relative to the windowed line excerpt #41658 and logger: keep an excerpt of a line over 1,000 bytes wherever the error is #43313 go first, or does the 120-byte rule move into src/css?
  3. Keep, fold or demote invalid @ rule encountered (2 printed lines become 5)?

Background

Downsides

  • 1,000 short-line warnings print 4,999 lines, was 1,999. Each costs 14,400 instructions, was 5,100.
  • A data: URL sheet prints its URL with each warning: 2,000 in a 42 KB URL print 84 MB, was 102 KB.
  • Bun.build: 10.9 allocator calls per warning, was 7.2.
Notes

Self-review of 2026-10-28: restructure. The CSS half is right: the parse entries take the Source, the warn sites pass a position, and the line and column entry of the logger goes. The logger half is not this PR's: 357 of the 847 added lines are #45554, and add_warning_fmt_no_long_excerpt is a CSS-only rule for a long-line defect that #41658 and #43313 repair for every producer. No person has reviewed this PR or #45554. The review raised 25 concerns. 16 are addressed in this text, by the draft state or by a hand-off to #45554. 9 are code changes: they are the plan below, and they wait for the answers.

Plan for the re-cut (after the answers, one CSS commit):

Question 1 in full. #45554 changes Location::init_or_null for every producer that passes a Source (JS, TS, JSON, TOML, YAML). Its body asks where an end-of-file error is: on the last line (the logger today) or on line N+1 (bun fmt, bun lint, esbuild, tsc). This PR pins the logger's answer for CSS (2:13 in "a warning at the end of the sheet").

Question 2 in full. The logger pads the caret by the whole column: one JS error at column 50,000 of a one-line file prints 100 KB of stderr. #41658 indents the caret relative to the cut excerpt, and #43313 keeps an excerpt of a line over 1,000 bytes wherever the error is. This PR's entry drops the excerpt instead, for CSS warnings only.

Question 3 in full. The unknown at-rule warning is the common one (@tailwind, @apply). Nothing folds or caps repeated warnings. #17205 says that this warning "would be pretty noisy" in the dev server. The other eight warn sites need the same plumbing whatever the answer is.

Before and after (.a { color: red }\n.b { color: blue }\n@unknown-rule x;\n, Bun.build logs):

base warns.css file "" line 2 lineText ""
base warns.module.css file "warns.module.css" line 2 lineText ""
PR warns.css file "/tmp/x/warns.css" line 3 lineText "@unknown-rule x;"
PR warns.module.css file "/tmp/x/warns.module.css" line 3 lineText "@unknown-rule x;"
$ bun build ./warns.css
3 | @unknown-rule x;
                 ^
warn: invalid @ rule encountered: '@unknown-rule'
   at /tmp/x/warns.css:3:14

A rejected composes (.base { color: red }\n.card .title {\n composes: base;\n font-weight: bold;\n}), both builds exit 0 and print the rule without the declaration:

base warn: "composes" only works inside single class selectors
         at a.module.css:2:12
note: The parent selector is not a single class selector because of the syntax here:
         at a.module.css:1:1
PR    3 |   composes: base;
                     ^
warn: "composes" only works inside single class selectors
         at /tmp/composes/a.module.css:3:12
      2 | .card .title {
          ^
note: The parent selector is not a single class selector because of the syntax here:
         at /tmp/composes/a.module.css:2:1

The threads that quote these warnings (#12878, #20619) are about Tailwind directives. They ask for the directives to work, not for the place of the warning. This PR prints more lines for each such warning.

Where the warning shows. bun build prints it and Bun.build() returns it in logs. The dev server prints the log of a build only when it has an error (src/runtime/bake/dev_server/failures.rs:150), so its overlay shows a CSS warning only beside an error of the same sheet. A sheet's warnings are dropped when one of its own imports fails to resolve (src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:6624). Neither is changed here.

Why it is stacked. On main the CSS warnings do not use the logger's scanner. That scanner (LineColumnTracker) started again from byte 0 for a position on a UTF-8 continuation byte. With this change alone, 20,000 warnings on stray continuation bytes in a 400 KB sheet took 5.5 s (main: 0.09 s, builds of 2026-10-17). #45554 removes that scan and also counts columns from 1 after a lone CR, which the CSS tokenizer treats as a line break. On top of #45554 the cost is linear: 10,000 such warnings add 1,580 instructions each and 20,000 add 1,610 each. The first two commits here are the two commits of #45554 (99433d91d1, 4064a2d6b8), replayed on main.

Known problem of the stack. The test hunk of #45554 does not type-check in the AoT own-tests suite (NOT-BUILT test/js/bun/transpiler/parse-error-column.test.ts: error: TS2345, helper at line 205). The repair belongs to #45554.

State of the branch. The CSS commits are written on top of #47025 (which reworked the composes sites and lists this PR as "Stays open", which is not a review) and #46834 (Source<'a>, a Location that owns its strings).

error_recovery stays. ParserOptions.error_recovery, its five readers and the four callers of warn(&ParseError) are as on main: the open #44833 sets the option for a sheet. A ParseError has a line and a column and no byte position, so a warning for an error that the option skips has the file and no line. On main only the @keyframes block parser sets the option (src/css/rules/keyframes.rs:371), on options that have no logger. So that function logs nothing today, and no test reaches it. The warn function with a byte position is warn_at.

Warn sites. Unknown at-rule, @nest, the four unsupported pseudo-class and pseudo-element sites, the three composes warnings and the composes note. The texts do not change. The four pseudo sites get the byte offset after the first colon as one more argument.

Producers. ParseTask (bundler, dev server, HTML entries), Transpiler::build_css_output (bun build --no-bundle), cssInternals, bun pm diff. ParserOptions.source is private and the parse entries set it, so a producer cannot log a CSS warning without its sheet.

Long lines. Location::init_or_null (src/ast/lib.rs) keeps the whole line when the position is in its last 80 bytes. Otherwise it keeps 40 bytes before the position and 80 after. Location does not record where a cut starts, so column does not index a cut lineText, and width_before pads the caret by the whole column. With add_warning_fmt in place of the new entry, a one-line sheet with 100, 200 and 400 warnings printed 197, 734 and 2,860 KB (builds of 2026-10-17). The entry drops an excerpt of 120 bytes or more: every excerpt that is cut on the left is at least that long, and a shorter one starts where its line starts. With it the same sheets print 10.0, 19.9 and 39.8 KB (base: 5.1, 10.2 and 20.4 KB, with no place). A whole line of 120 bytes or more loses its excerpt too. The entry is a workaround. It goes when the logger bounds a long line for every producer (#41658, #43313).

The two warnings that move.

  • composes: the "not allowed inside nested selectors" warning was at the start of a rule. For .outer { @media (min-width: 1px) { composes: base } } that was the start of .outer. It is now at the declaration, as the other two composes warnings are. ComposesState::Allow and DisallowNested no longer carry a position.
  • Functional pseudo: the warning for :custom-fn(x) and ::custom-fn(x) was at the first argument, where the parser is when it logs. It is now after the first colon, as for a pseudo with no arguments.

Dev server. A CSS warning on line 1 had line 0. The overlay client reads line 0 as "no position" (src/runtime/bake/client/error-serialization.ts:70), while the server writes the rest of the position for every line that is not negative (src/runtime/bake/dev_server/serialized_failure.rs:208), so the client fails to decode the payload. That needs a warning on line 1 and an error in the same sheet. The new test in test/bake/dev/css.test.ts fails that way without this change. This PR covers the CSS producer only. Two other producers can still send line 0 (src/ast_jsc/lib.rs:30, src/bundler/ParseTask.rs:1829), and the change to the writer is in #39488.

Positions against the tokenizer. The warning has the tokenizer's line + 1 and column in 14 of 19 sheets (LF, CRLF, lone CR, first line, no final line break, tabs, comments, a nested rule, @media, 2-byte, 3-byte and 4-byte characters, BOM). The 5 that differ:

end of sheet (`@unknown-rule` with no `;`) logger 2:13 tokenizer 2:14
form feed before the warning logger 1:32 tokenizer 2:14
U+2028 in a comment before the warning logger 2:18 tokenizer 1:22
U+2029 in a comment before the warning logger 3:14 tokenizer 2:14
stray 0x80 before the warning logger 1:40 tokenizer 1:39

The logger's line breaks are those of JavaScript. After U+2028 or U+2029 the lineText starts with the last byte of that character, as for JavaScript diagnostics (#41658 has the repair).

Measurements. Release builds, linux x64, of the second commit (faf2a66dec: main with #45554, the base) and of the head (a25baea106). perf and valgrind are not installed on the machine. The instruction count of a whole process comes from a perf_event_open counter (user space, all threads, median of 5 runs, a spread under 1% in all sets but one). The instruction count of one parse comes from gdb (record full, from the entry of StyleSheet::parse_with to its return). Allocator calls are gdb hit counts on the mi_* entry points. There are no wall-clock numbers.

  • A sheet with no warning, one parse: normalize.css 500,340 to 499,795 instructions, hint.css 1,591,412 to 1,586,874, random-gradients.css 1,001,542 to 1,000,810, trainer-gallery-holo.css 513,446 to 513,491, 120 rules with functional pseudo-classes 1,692,567 to 1,689,392. A whole Bun.build of 1,500 such rules: 72.39 M to 72.25 M, which is inside the 0.6 M spread of the runs.
  • size_of (compile-time probe): ParserOptions 120 to 128, ComposesState 20 to 12. ParserState stays 32.
  • Release text (size): 138,037,100 to 138,036,844 bytes, 256 bytes smaller. nm -S: add_warning_fmt_line_col_with_notes -653, add_warning_fmt_no_long_excerpt +747, ParserOptions::warn_at +56, warn_with_note +59, warn_unsupported_pseudo +103, parse_selector<Selectors> 24,887 to 24,697, parse_declaration_impl<NoComposesCtx> 1,240 to 1,121, StyleSheet::parse_with 8,629 to 8,724.
  • Instructions for each warning in Bun.build (the logs are read, not printed), from sheets with 10,000 and 20,000 warnings: 4,733 to 6,069 on a 16-byte line. On a 119-byte line (seven rules and the at-rule) the line costs 76,751, and 80,641 here: 3,890 more for its warning.
  • Instructions for each warning in bun build (the logs are printed): 5,145 to 14,413 on a 16-byte line. On the 119-byte line 77,142 to 104,108: 26,966 more. The CLI now prints the line and a caret line for each warning.
  • Allocator calls for each warning on a short line in Bun.build (sheets with 1,000 and 5,000 warnings): 7.2 on the base, 10.9 here. Each hand-over of a log copies the file and the excerpt of a message.
  • Whole Bun.build, instructions: 80,000 warnings one per line 1,322.5 M to 1,491.6 M (2,113 more each). 80,000 warnings on one line 1,296.1 M to 1,479.1 M (2,287 more each). 4,000 composes warnings with notes in a rule that starts in the last 80 bytes of a 260 KB line 3,252.0 M to 3,323.3 M (17,800 more each: the logger copies that line for each note and the entry drops the copy). 10,000 warnings on stray continuation bytes 154.2 M to 169.9 M, 20,000 of them 303.5 M to 335.6 M.
  • lineText bytes (base: 0): 80,000 warnings one per line, sum 3,497,780, max 44. 80,000 warnings on one line, sum 107 (the one warning in the first 40 bytes). The 260 KB line sheet, sum 68,000, max 17.
  • CLI stderr, one warning on each short line: 1,000 warnings print 4,999 lines and 153 KB (base: 1,999 lines, 55 KB).
  • A sheet in a data: URL of 42,014 bytes with 2,000 warnings: stderr 101,999 bytes on the base, 84,248,678 here. The logger copies source.path.text into each Location, as it does for every producer that passes a Source. A bound belongs to the logger.

Not changed.

  • CSS errors keep ErrorLocation::to_location (src/css/error.rs:178) and the tokenizer's line and column. A warning and an error of one sheet can differ in the 5 cases above. The follow-up is a ParseError that stores a byte position, so that errors take the logger's path too. logger: keep an excerpt of a line over 1,000 bytes wherever the error is #43313 bounds the line text of an error on a long line.
  • bun build --no-bundle logs CSS parse, minify and print errors with no position (src/bundler/transpiler.rs:3152). bun build --no-bundle: report a CSS error with its file, line and column #46184 adds the position.
  • Four warn sites say invalid or Unsupported for CSS that is valid and that the parser does not know (@view-transition, @position-try, :state(), ::highlight()). They now have a caret under them.
  • Repeated warnings are not folded. A sheet with N Tailwind directives prints N located warnings.
  • A sheet in a data: URL has the whole URL as position.file of every warning, as a CSS error of such a sheet already has.

Test harness. The CLI backend of itBundled ignores a warning with no at line and fails a test for a located warning that the test does not list. Plain-sheet CSS warnings are now located. No test on main is affected: the bundler and CSS suites pass in CI on this head.

Open PRs that need a change after this.

Status

Reproduced with Bun.build and bun build on a sheet that has @unknown-rule x; on line 3. On main the warning has position.file: "" (plain sheet), lineText: "" and line 2, and the CLI prints no at file:line:column. The 19 new tests in test/bundler/css/css-modules.test.ts fail without the CSS commits and pass with them.

This PR is a draft. A self-review of the reworked branch says: keep the CSS half, and move the logger half to the PRs that own it (#45554, #41658, #43313). The PR body has three questions for a maintainer. The branch is re-cut to one CSS commit after the answers.

The first two commits are #45554, replayed on main. The CSS change is the last two commits (eb327ee56e, a25baea106).

Walkthrough

Diagnostic byte offsets are normalized for line endings and encoded characters. CSS parsing now uses Source values and reports warnings with source-backed locations. Tests cover diagnostic positions across line endings, file types, CSS parser cases, and runtime and CLI paths.

Changes

Diagnostic location handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Normalize diagnostic offsets
src/ast/lib.rs, src/bun_core/string/immutable*, src/lint/regex/*
Position scans normalize offsets for CRLF pairs and UTF-8 code points. Carriage returns reset columns to 1. Warning logging accepts source locations for warnings and notes, and omits excerpts of at least 120 bytes. The shared code-point-start helper is re-exported and used by the regex subject code.
Source-backed CSS parsing and warnings
src/css/css_parser.rs, src/css/declaration.rs, src/css/selectors/parser.rs, src/bundler/ParseTask.rs, src/bundler/transpiler.rs, src/css_jsc/css_internals.rs, src/runtime/cli/pm_diff_normalize.rs
CSS parser entry points and their callers pass Source values. Parser, composition, and selector warnings use byte locations, including notes for composition diagnostics.
Validate diagnostic positions
test/js/bun/transpiler/parse-error-column.test.ts, test/bake/dev/bundle.test.ts, test/bake/dev/css.test.ts, test/bundler/css/css-modules.test.ts
Tests cover positions across line endings and character boundaries, CSS warning positions and metadata, and DevServer, transpiler, import, and CLI diagnostics.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked: the move of code_point_start to bun_core::strings::wtf8_codepoint_start (src/bun_core/string/immutable/wtf8_text.rs) is behavior-identical for the lint regex caller, since the old end-of-text length of 1 and the new 0 both fail the > at - start test; error_stop_offset's offset - 1 cannot underflow because a two-byte line break ending at offset implies offset >= 1; and warn(&ParseError) logging at Loc::EMPTY is unreachable today because nothing sets error_recovery.

Extended reasoning...

The change reworks the diagnostics logger's offset location (src/ast/lib.rs), threads a bun_ast::Source through the CSS parser's entry points and all five producers, and replaces the line/column warning API with byte-position warn_at/warn_with_note; it touches no auth, crypto or injection surface. One nit finding is posted inline; the ruled-out items above are the concrete checks made beyond it.

I reviewed the pushed version of this PR and found no bugs; because it changes how the shared logger locates every diagnostic (not only CSS warnings), a human look is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • error_stop_offset: the CRLF rewind can't underflow (js_line_break_len_back returns 2 only with a preceding \r), and the dropped "continuation byte, rescan from 0" fallback is sound because wtf8_codepoint_at and CodepointIterator consume the same byte count for truncated/invalid sequences, so a stop never lands inside a unit either scanner sees.
  • Location.file borrows in the four producers: ParseTask and transpiler.rs pass 'static path text, css_internals passes a literal, pm_diff_normalize has no logger; line_text is owned, so the stack-local Sources in transpiler.rs/css_internals.rs don't outlive-borrow.
  • All callers of the changed signatures (parse/parse_bundler/StyleAttribute::parse/init_error_position/error_position/parse_non_ts_pseudo_class/parse_pseudo_element) are updated, and the superseded helpers (add_warning_fmt_line_col*, warn_fmt*, to_logger_location, lint code_point_start) are deleted. The earlier nit about the duplicated 40/80 window literals is addressed by EXCERPT_BEFORE/EXCERPT_AFTER.
Extended reasoning...

The change rewires CSS parser warnings through the shared logger (src/ast/lib.rs) with a byte position and a Source, replaces clamp_error_offset with error_stop_offset (CRLF and UTF-8-continuation rewinding), removes the tracker's rescan fallback, and changes the column after a lone CR from 0 to 1, which affects line/column reporting for every loader, not just CSS. It touches no auth, crypto or injection surface; the memory-sensitive part is the lifetime-erased Cow::Borrowed of source.path.text in Location, which I traced through all four producers. No findings and all previously raised feedback is addressed, but at ~850 lines with a behaviour change in the diagnostic position scanner used by all parsers, it is not simple enough to approve without a human reading it; no CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed files and the hunt ran to a dry streak.

Merged main (8a0e49e) into this branch.

  • src/ast/lib.rs: main (98a4365, Fix use-after-free of BuildMessage.position.file: real lifetimes for Source, Path, ImportRecord and resolve results #46834) deleted the manual impl Clone for Location (it derives Clone now) and retyped add_warning_fmt_line_col and add_warning_fmt_line_col_with_notes. This PR replaces those two functions with add_warning_fmt_no_long_excerpt(source, loc, args, note). The resolution keeps the function of this PR, and the two old functions stay deleted.
  • src/css/css_parser.rs: this PR deletes SourceLocation::to_logger_location and gives StyleSheet::parse, StyleAttribute::parse and StyleSheet::parse_bundler a source parameter in place of code. Main changed ImportRecord to ImportRecord<'static> in the same signatures. The resolution has the parameters of this PR with ImportRecord<'static>, and the source is &'a bun_ast::Source<'a>.
  • Two more edits for the new types: ParserOptions.source is Option<&'a bun_ast::Source<'a>>, and the test helper in line_column_tracker_tests reads line_text with .into_vec().
  • cargo check --workspace passes on the merged tree (Linux x64).
  • Tests, on a local debug build that contains this merge and the main merges of eight other open PRs, with --timeout 30000: test/bake/dev/bundle.test.ts (57 pass), test/bake/dev/css.test.ts (23 pass), test/bundler/css/css-modules.test.ts (34 pass), test/js/bun/transpiler/parse-error-column.test.ts (25 pass).

Jarred-Sumner added a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 27, 2026
### What does this PR do?

Consolidates the open pull requests on the CSS parser (`src/css`:
parsing, minifying, lowering, printing, CSS modules) into one.

179 open pull requests were in scope. Each was judged by one rule: **the
output must mean to a browser what the input meant.** Every claim was
run through a build of `main`, a build with the change, lightningcss
1.33 and Chromium 156 (CSSOM, computed values, painted pixels for colors
and gradients), and counted against 10,116 real stylesheets: the
published CSS of about 190 popular npm packages, plus stylesheets from
open source repositories. 107 land here, whole or in part, most of them
cut down. The source diff is net negative.

Of the 10,116, 9,509 are stylesheets that someone ships. The rest are
test fixtures of other tools (521), Tailwind v4 source that needs its
plugin (59) and SCSS, PostCSS or template source (27).

| 9,509 shipped stylesheets | `main` | this branch |
|---|---|---|
| fail to build | 71 | 35 |
| ... of those, valid CSS that Bun rejects | | 0 |
| minified output reads differently in Chromium than the input | 552 | 2
|
| CSS modules with a name that is referenced but not defined, or
exported but not defined | 166 | 0 |

| all 10,116 | `main` | this branch |
|---|---|---|
| fail to build | 192 | 141 |
| minified output reads differently in Chromium than the input | 593 |
15 |
| build on `main`, fail here | | 0 |
| right on `main`, wrong here (minified, and at the default targets) | |
0 |
| size of the minified output, no targets | 162.32 MB | 162.47 MB
(+0.093%) |
| size of the output at the default targets | 224.1 MB | 210.2 MB
(-6.2%) |

A syntax error is a build error, with one exception: the IE star hack
`*zoom: 1` is skipped, because tachyons and handsontable ship it. The 35
shipped stylesheets that fail are invalid CSS: 28 have a selector that
Chromium drops (semantic-ui-css, swiper, @ionic/core, Adobe Spectrum,
xp.css), 2 an `@import` after other rules, and one each `@supports not X
and Y`, a nested `@keyframes`, a stray comma, a selector list in
`::slotted()`, `@media screen\0` (govuk-frontend). The 2 that read
differently fold a `color-mix()` inside a gradient (see the known gaps).

The growth of the minified output is rules and declarations that `main`
deleted by mistake: 87 KB of rules, 45 KB of prefixed declarations that
only browser targets can rule out.

#### Popular CSS that `main` breaks today

- normalize.css, modern-normalize, sanitize.css: `font-family:
monospace, monospace` is collapsed to `monospace`, which changes the
font size from 16px to 13px (#46662).
- CKEditor 5, Tabler, Carbon, VitePress, Ionic, PatternFly, Excalidraw:
a rule of custom properties is deleted as a "duplicate" of a later rule
with the same selector and other custom properties. 37 stylesheets lose
1,681 custom properties (#33684).
- Material Components, daisyUI, DocSearch, plyr: a `var()` size loses to
its own fallback (#42101).
- nextra, daisyUI, CKEditor: declarations written after a nested rule
are moved above it (#45462).
- antd 4, purecss, govuk-frontend: browser hacks in selector lists start
to apply everywhere (#42100).
- foundation-sites, flatpickr, 98.css, blueprintjs, scalar,
react-datepicker: the build fails on valid CSS (#46756, #38552, #38534).
tachyons, handsontable: it fails on the IE star hack (#46751).
- nodejs.org, Mantine: a CSS module exports classes that no rule
defines, because the `@apply` or `@mixin` in them is moved out of the
rule (#46759).
- hint.css and 42 more: `z-index: 1000001` and `1000000` become the same
number (#46715).
- Adobe Spectrum: `--version: 5.0.1` prints as `5.1`.
- A quarter of all stylesheets: minified output has a stray space in
`align-items: center` (#41993).

#### Behavior changes to look at first

1. **`light-dark()` is kept as written at the default browser targets**
(#42009). The lowered form `var(--buncss-light, a) var(--buncss-dark,
b)` is invalid unless a compiled `color-scheme` covers the element: 184
of the 215 real stylesheets that get it never define the variable, so
every browser drops the declaration. The docs section on the polyfill is
removed.
2. **`border` is not built from longhands** (#42072):
`border-width:0;border-style:solid;border-color:red` stays three
declarations, because `border` also resets `border-image`. 305 real
stylesheets grow by 30 KB in total; `bootstrap.min.css` by 113 bytes, 5
gzipped. No real stylesheet was found where the old merge shows, so this
is the one to drop if size matters more. 14 existing expectations
change.
3. **A CSS module no longer exports names that only occur inside
`:global(...)`** (#45487). 73 real modules lose 202 export keys, all of
them names that no rule has. `import { g }` or `composes: g` of such a
name becomes a build error.
4. **Container names and `@counter-style` names stay global in a CSS
module** (#45247 by @mikamikasuki). `main` hashes the `@container` name
but not `container-name`, so a named query never matches.
postcss-modules (Vite, css-loader, Next.js) keeps them global;
lightningcss and esbuild hash both. Global keeps a container that is
queried from another file or from JS working.
5. **Syntax errors are build errors, also two that `main` lets
through**: a media query that stops short (`@media screen and {`,
`@media not {`, `@import "a.css" screen and;`) and `@media (width <) foo
{`. No stylesheet of the 10,116 has either. A condition that is valid by
the grammar though no browser knows it, `( ... )` or `fn( ... )`, is
kept as written (#46756): `(min-width:0\0)`, `(not(hover))`.
6. **Declarations after a nested rule stay where they were written**, as
a nested declarations rule (#45462). Changes the output of 199 real
stylesheets; in a fuzz of 2,850 nested programs compared by computed
style, `main` was wrong in 1,056 and the pull request's code, before it
was trimmed here, in none.
7. **`Bun.color`**: `color()` inputs are converted instead of returned
as a string (`Bun.color("color(srgb 1 0 0)", "hex")` was `"color(srgb 1
0 0)"`); `currentColor`, system colors and `light-dark()` give `null` in
the converting formats instead of the keyword as a string; a relative
color or `color-mix()` outside sRGB is clipped, not gamut-mapped
(`hsl(from oklch(100% .399 336.3) h s l)` is `#ff5bff`, was `#fff`).
8. The `:-moz-any()` and `:-webkit-any()` copies of rules with `:is()`
are gone at the default targets (#45945, #42029). The `:-webkit-any()`
copy outranked the original rule: `.title{color:blue}
:is(h1,h2,h3){color:red}` painted red. 5.8% of all default-target output
was the `:-moz-any()` copies.
9. `Property` grows from 216 to 224 bytes: `Url` stores its text as a
slice so that two `url()` values can be compared (#46895). The pull
request packed a pointer and a `u32` behind `unsafe` to avoid that.

#### Not in this PR, needs a decision

- **Raise the default browser targets (#40369) and add a `cssTarget`
option (#40368).** Today: Chrome 80, Edge 80, Firefox 78, Safari 14,
Opera 67, and no public way to change them. At Vite 8's floor the output
of the 9,924 stylesheets is 15.3% smaller (3.9% gzipped). About a dozen
fixes here only matter at today's floor, and code for older targets is
unreachable without the option.
- Vendor prefixes for `user-select`, `appearance`, `hyphens` and five
more (#45814): 1,116 real stylesheets lack a prefix they need at the
default targets. And for `backdrop-filter` (#44648): 173.
- Clip instead of gamut-map in the sRGB fallback of a plain wide-gamut
color: deletes about 90 lines, changes every pinned fallback hex. If the
mapping stays, #44647 by @oddharsh makes it closer to what browsers
paint (colors off by 2/255 or more: 168 to 110 of 3,170 real ones).

#### Changes

**Rules: duplicates, merging, nesting, fallbacks**

- The `:-moz-any()` copy of every rule with `:is()` or `:not(a, b)` is
gone: Firefox 78 has `:is()` (#45945). 1,164 real stylesheets
- Keep declarations written after a nested rule in place with a nested
declarations rule (#45462). 379 real stylesheets
- With nesting compiled away, an unknown at-rule inside a style rule was
moved out of it: `.wrapper{@apply flex}` printed a bare `@apply flex;`
and the rule was gone, so a CSS module exported a class that no rule
defines. It now stays in a block under the compiled selector. 72 real
modules with Tailwind's `@apply`, 25 with Mantine's `@mixin` (#46759).
316 real stylesheets
- Keep !important in the rules generated for logical properties and
color-scheme (#38597). 311 real stylesheets
- With browser targets, remove an earlier duplicate rule only when its
declaration block is equal (#46861). 171 real stylesheets
- Compare custom property names in `PropertyId` equality and importance
in duplicate-rule detection (#33684). 40 real stylesheets
- Keep same-condition @supports rules and empty named @layer blocks
(#46733). 31 real stylesheets
- Keep target-added vendor prefix passes on cloned and re-minified
rules, and never print a bare `:full-screen` (#43339). 12 real
stylesheets
- Keep the selectors on rules added for color fallbacks and logical
properties (#43240). 3 real stylesheets
- A later declaration of a property drops the `@supports` color copies
of the earlier one, which printed after the rule and won (#45560). 2
real stylesheets
- Do not merge style rules in a stylesheet that holds `revert-rule`
(#46953). 1 real stylesheets
- `@import ... supports(-webkit-mask: none)` kept its prefix (#38589)

**Properties and shorthands**

- Print align-items:center without a stray space when no safe/unsafe
keyword is given (#41993). 3,317 real stylesheets
- Emit the physical longhands instead of the inset shorthand for targets
without it (#38583). 1,452 real stylesheets
- Keep the stops of an upward gradient as written, and drop a `50%` hint
only at the midpoint (#46790). 104 real stylesheets
- Emit unparsed border-block-* declarations when compiling logical
borders (#38582). 89 real stylesheets
- Keep repeated font families and dedupe only the inserted system-ui
fallbacks (#46662). 88 real stylesheets
- A `width` / `height` / `min-*` / `max-*` with `var()` or `env()` was
printed before the plain fallback written above it, so the fallback won
(#42101). 26 real stylesheets
- Keep box-orient and box-direction when flex-direction or flex-flow
follows (#45672). 16 real stylesheets
- Write held prefixed background declarations at every flush (#46882). 6
real stylesheets
- Derive equality for Size2D and BorderRadius, and keep every prefix in
the border-radius handler (#45665). 2 real stylesheets
- Print `none` instead of an empty border-image, mask-border or
mask-box-image value (#45143). 2 real stylesheets
- Keep font/transition sub-properties on the side of the shorthand they
were written on (#41990). 2 real stylesheets
- CSS-wide keywords are not names: `font:12px Arial;font-family:inherit`
printed `font:12px inherit`, `color-scheme:inherit` and
`color-scheme:auto` printed `normal`, `transition-property:unset` was
folded into `transition` (#42022). 2 real stylesheets
- Only fold font longhands into `font` when the rule declared a `font`
(#45459)
- Keep a font family name quoted when its identifiers do not read back
as the same name (#46606)
- Stop rewriting valid positions into ones browsers reject (#45197)
- `border` is no longer built from longhands unless the rule also sets
what `border` resets (`border-image`), and an author's `border-image`
reset is no longer dropped. `transition` is likewise only written where
the rule wrote one, because it resets `transition-behavior` (#42072)
- `border; border-image: <gradient>; border-image-slice: 1` lost the
gradient in every default build (#42018)
- A prefixed `linear-gradient` keeps its direction, written or
generated: the prefixed syntax names the starting side and measures
angles differently (#46697)

**At-rules**

- Print @font-face format() keywords as strings (#37979). 439 real
stylesheets
- Print @supports `not` conditions without a leading space (#38559). 88
real stylesheets
- Reset after the number token of a unicode-range (#45835). 33 real
stylesheets
- Keep `<general-enclosed>` media and container conditions as written
(#46756). 24 real stylesheets
- A strict range such as `(width < 768px)` lowered for old targets still
matched at exactly 768px. The step is now `.02px`. The `not all and`
form for other units is not taken (#46806). 18 real stylesheets
- Keep scanning an @supports condition after a nested block (#38552). 9
real stylesheets
- Every `@counter-style name` printed as `@counter-stylename`, which
browsers drop (also #46692). In a CSS module the name now stays global,
like the `list-style` that refers to it (#33679). 9 real stylesheets
- Keep a keyframe whose block has an invalid item (#46288). 2 real
stylesheets
- Read an @Property initial-value on the stylesheet's parser, keep an
unmatched value as written (#45806). 2 real stylesheets
- `@media {}` is `all`. A media query that stops after `and`, `or` or
`not` (`@media screen and {`) is a build error; `main` printed `not all`
or dropped the condition, silently. The `@layer` and type selector parts
are not taken (#46869). 2 real stylesheets
- Accept a name-only `@container` and a `style()` feature with no value
(#46689). 1 real stylesheets
- Parse `<timeline-range-name> <percentage>` keyframe selectors (#45652)
- Allow `or` inside parentheses after a media type (#45088)
- Print the `=` comparison in media and container queries as `=`
(#45071)
- Parse the @font-palette-values font-family descriptor as a list of
family names (#45484)

**Selectors**

- Never wrap a selector list in :is() (#46787). 414 real stylesheets
- Stop emitting :-webkit-any() copies of :is() that outrank the original
rule (#42029). 373 real stylesheets
- With browser targets, a selector list with a vendor-prefixed member
was split, which revives hacks that rely on other engines dropping the
whole list: `.s *::-ms-backdrop,.s{flex:auto}` applied everywhere.
Rewritten; the list is printed as written (#42100). 42 real stylesheets
- Print the vendor prefix on downleveled :any-link, :read-only,
:read-write, :placeholder-shown and :autofill (#42131). 12 real
stylesheets
- Fix nesting lowering of a `&` that does not lead its selector
(#43047). 8 real stylesheets
- `@scope`: `&` and implicit selectors compile to `:where(:scope)`,
relative selectors and bare declarations parse (#43165). 7 real
stylesheets
- Only reject bare :global / :local pseudo-classes in CSS modules
(#38534). 5 real stylesheets
- Stop truncating `@scope to (...)` and stop replacing `&` in the
scope-end selector (#43146). 2 real stylesheets
- `[xl|href$=".pdf"]` lost its namespace prefix (#45159). 2 real
stylesheets
- Match An+B keywords exactly and take only `+` as the leading sign
(#42953). 1 real stylesheets
- Parse ::details-content and ::picker() like ::part() (#45504). 1 real
stylesheets
- Parse :window-inactive as an ordinary pseudo-class, and accept it
after ::selection (#45815)
- Print :nth-col(1) and :nth-last-col(1) in functional form (#41575)
- `li::before::marker` failed the build (#45810)
- `&` inside `:nth-child(... of S)` is resolved when nesting is compiled
away. The second selector serializer (326 lines) is deleted (#43024)

**Colors and `Bun.color`**

- Keep light-dark() as written under the default browser targets
(#42009). 227 real stylesheets
- Number and percentage channels parse in `lab()`, `lch()`, `oklab()`,
`oklch()`, `hsl()` and `hwb()`; the hue of `lch` / `oklch` is no longer
scaled by alpha (#45084). 130 real stylesheets
- `Bun.color` returns `null` for `currentColor`, system colors and
`light-dark()` in the converting formats, instead of the CSS keyword as
a string (#33047). 130 real stylesheets
- Relative colors: channel keywords are on the scale of their function
(`rgb(from #369 calc(r + 10) g b)`), the origin's alpha is kept, a
relative color kept as written gets no `@supports` copies, and a result
outside sRGB is not folded (#45362). 31 real stylesheets
- Keep rotate: 0deg out of none, and keep the origin alpha in relative
colors (#38486). 13 real stylesheets
- Compute the D50 reference white in f32 so greys convert to lab(l 0 0)
like lightningcss (#38535). 7 real stylesheets
- Return a missing hue for a grey from conversions into lch, oklch, hsl
and hwb (#45201). 5 real stylesheets
- Fix color(a98-rgb), srgb-linear relative colors and color-mix(in
xyz-d50) (#38487). 4 real stylesheets
- Match named colors without regard to ASCII case (#45092). 3 real
stylesheets
- Fold min(), max() and clamp() over plain numbers (#39515)
- `calc(l - .08)` in a percentage channel of a relative color became NaN
and printed `#000` (also #45970) (#45971)
- Bun.color: convert color() inputs instead of returning them as a CSS
string (#38488)
- A `color-mix(in srgb, ...)` result outside sRGB prints `color(srgb
...)` instead of a gamut-mapped hex (#39269)

**`calc()` and numbers**

- Rounding to 6 significant digits ate into the integer part:
`z-index:2147483647` became `2147480000`, `max-width:9999999px` became
`10000000px`, `--x:1234567.5` became `1234570`. It now only cuts a
fraction short: a value kept as tokens prints its source text, a typed
value prints every integer digit and at least one digit of the fraction
(#46715). 43 real stylesheets
- A number without a unit is no longer repaired into `px`
(`height:1.5715` is dropped by a standards-mode browser, so it prints as
written), `calc(-1 * 0)` is not a length, and on a property of the range
[0,∞] (sizes, border radii, padding, border and outline widths, gap,
`flex-basis`, `font-size`) a `calc()` that folds below zero prints `0`
instead of an invalid negative literal, and a negative literal no longer
replaces the valid declaration before it (`width:10px;width:-5px`
printed `width:-5px`) (#42104). 24 real stylesheets
- Print numbers from the f32's shortest digits, not its f64 expansion
(#38565). 17 real stylesheets
- Print negative numbers below 1 with a single minus sign (#38516)
- Keep math functions over two different length units as written
(#38489)
- Fold rem() with a truncated quotient, so it keeps the sign of the
dividend (#32286)
- A one-argument `min()` / `max()` around a sum printed without any
function (`width:100% - 20px`) (#46145)
- `round()` breaks ties upward and handles a negative step as browsers
do (#45249)

**CSS modules**

- A CSS module exports its `@keyframes` names (`styles.spin`). Hashing
is unchanged (#46720). 145 real stylesheets
- A name inside `:global(...)` prints plain but was exported as
`name_<hash>`, a class no rule has (also #38573) (#45487). 90 real
stylesheets
- Keep container names global in CSS modules (#45247). 6 real
stylesheets
- Tag the keyframes name when an `animation` value falls back to raw
tokens (#46034). 6 real stylesheets
- In a plain stylesheet `composes: a from "./b.css"` was treated as an
import: the file was inlined and an absolute path printed (#45961). 4
real stylesheets
- Drop a rejected composes instead of failing the file at print time
(#38538). 1 real stylesheets
- Keep every rule's custom properties for the composes conflict check
(#38523)
- Keep composes working after a nested rule in the same block (#38520)
- `IdentOrRef::hash` read 2 of 16 bytes, so in release builds every
class of a module hashed alike (#30784)

**Tokens, `url()`, diagnostics**

- The block skip stack no longer allocates on every block exit (#39533)
- Report the diagnostic's line without its line breaks in
position.lineText (#38342). 192 real stylesheets
- Compare `url()` values by their text (#46895). 26 real stylesheets
- Values kept as tokens keep the blanks they were written with instead
of having them re-invented at print time: `attr(x type(<number>))`
printed `type(< number> )`, which browsers drop. Minified output still
drops the blanks that cannot matter (#45577). 19 real stylesheets
- The IE star hack (`*zoom:1`) failed the whole build. The declaration
is skipped, as every browser does. It is the one syntax error that
builds: tachyons, handsontable and jasmine ship it (#46751). 8 real
stylesheets
- The path of a copied asset spliced into `url()` is always quoted, so a
file name with a space or a parenthesis cannot end the `url()` (#41557).
7 real stylesheets
- Move the skip loop of parse_until_before out of the generic body
(#39520)
- Remove dead code from bun_css: the unused `impl Default for Property`
(#45618)
- Default the at-rule and qualified-rule parser traits, drop the
url_to_css shim (#31999)

**Speed**

Four inputs that took quadratic or exponential time, or produced output
out of proportion, are now linear, with no new limit and no extra pass
(#31639, #42243, #38531, #43421).

**Tests only**

- `css-fuzz.test.ts` never ran in CI and timed out on debug builds; it
is a deterministic table now (#38500)
- `nth-anplusb-ident.test.ts` counts heaps in a child process (#46331)
- `color.test.ts` checks the ansi-16 sweep with one `expect()` (#42824)
- Not CSS, but it failed this PR's CI and fails on `main` too:
`ws-proxy.test.ts` on Windows, "a message sent during a TLS
renegotiation arrives after it". The helper server now renegotiates from
the callback of the frame's write (#46170)

**No pull request covered these**

- `--v: 5.0.1` printed as `5.1`, `--w: 1.0.0` as `10`, `--x: 1+2` as
`12`, `2n+1` as `2n1`: a number token that touches another keeps its
source text.
- `color-scheme: auto` printed as `normal`, and `color-scheme: dark
light` as `light dark`.
- A bare `:global` or `:local` in a CSS module sets the scope of the
names after it, up to the end of the selector, as in css-loader. It was
a build error.
- The scrollbar states (`a:horizontal`,
`::-webkit-scrollbar{&:horizontal{}}`) are valid in a plain compound, as
in WebKit and Blink.
- Without browser targets, `-webkit-box-align`, `-ms-flex-align` and the
like were dropped next to their standard form (flatpickr,
foundation-sites, materialize-css: 28 stylesheets), and
`-webkit-fill-available` before `-moz-available` (beercss).
- `(-o-min-device-pixel-ratio: 2/1)` printed as `2`.
- `sin()`, `cos()` and `tan()` are exact at multiples of 90deg:
`calc(100px * cos(90deg))` printed `-.00000437114px`.
- A `display-p3` color at targets that have P3 but not the other
`color()` spaces (Safari 10.1 to 14) got itself as a fallback.
- `width: rem(-18px, 5px)` folds to a negative literal once `rem()` is
right; it prints `0`.
- Consecutive nested declarations rules, which arise when same-query
`@media` blocks in one rule merge, are folded into one and count against
the existing selector expansion limit as the `&{}` rules they replace
did.

#### Known and not fixed here

- Four longhands are still folded into a `transition` the author did not
write where the targets add a prefixed copy of a property (`mask-image`
at Chrome 80): only the shorthand gives the copy its own times.
- A later `background`, `box-shadow` or `border-*` declaration still
loses to the `@supports` copy of an earlier `var()` value of the same
property with a wide-gamut color. Same on `main`; #45560 is taken for
the properties of the fallback handler and for unparsed values only.
- A merged rule prints the unprefixed name in the passes of the rule it
absorbed: `.d::-webkit-input-placeholder{}.d::-moz-placeholder{}` prints
`::placeholder` for the second (#42106, not taken: it breaks the merge
of prefix-equivalent rules).
- The `border`, `outline` and `font` shorthands, `line-height`,
`scroll-padding`, `background-size` and a few more still print a
`calc()` that folds below zero as a negative literal. No real stylesheet
has one.
- `all` is not a property Bun knows, so `a{margin-top:1px;all:unset}`
prints `all` first. Same on `main`.
- A selector kept as raw tokens loses the blank before `*` when
minified: `--sel: .dark *` prints `.dark*`. Same on `main`.
- `width:calc(0% + 12px)` folds to `12px`, which lays out differently in
a table cell. Same on `main`.
- The `:dir()` / `:lang()` rules of a lowered logical property print
before the nested rules of their rule, so a logical declaration written
after a nested rule of equal specificity still loses to it. Same on
`main`.
- A fraction is still rounded to 6 significant digits (`12345.678`
prints `12345.7`, `33.3333333333%` prints `33.3333%`). Keeping every
digit would add up to 282 KB over the corpus.
- `@keyframes "quoted"` is hashed in a module but not exported.
- In a module, a keyframes name inside a `var()` fallback is not hashed:
`animation: var(--enter, fade 1s)`. Same on `main`.
- A `color-mix()` or relative color folded to a hex inside a gradient
changes the interpolation from Oklab to sRGB (VS Code, clawhub).
Printing `color(srgb ..)` instead needs a fallback for `mask-image`,
`list-style-image` and custom properties at the default targets, which
have none.
- A comma list in `@container` still fails the build.
- After a bare `:global`, names that are hashed at print time
(`::view-transition-old(foo)`) are still hashed; inside `:global(...)`
they are not.

### How did you verify your code works?

- The 35 CSS test files pass on a debug build, also with
`FORCE_COLOR=1`. 600+ of the tests in this branch fail on a build of
`main`. An earlier head of this branch passed all 179 CI jobs that ran.
- The reproduction of each issue listed above was run on `main` (wrong)
and on this branch (right).
- Differential run over the 10,116 stylesheets, `main` against this
branch, minified without targets and through `Bun.build` at the default
targets: no stylesheet that builds on `main` fails; Chromium 156
compares the output with the input rule by rule (CSSOM, then computed
values on a sized element in a standards-mode document, colors as
painted pixels in sRGB and P3). The comparison has 195 control pairs
that must read equal or different. For stylesheets that read differently
on both builds, mostly because of lowering, the sets of differences were
compared; the three new ones are two minifier fixtures that are wrong on
both and one comparison artifact.
- CSS modules are checked for consistency instead, since hashed names
defeat the comparison: every reference points at a name the output
defines, every export exists.
- `Bun.color`: 59 inputs in 13 formats on both builds; every changed
cell was read.
…equence

An error at the end of a file with CR LF line ends was reported one line
past the last line, at column 0, with an empty line text and no code frame.
The scan stopped on the LF of the final pair, after it had read the CR.

- error_stop_offset replaces clamp_error_offset. It moves every Loc to the
first byte of the unit that holds it: the CR of a CR LF pair, the first
byte of a UTF-8 sequence. Location::init_or_null_impl calls it once.
- The CR arm of the scanner starts the next line at column 1, as the LF,
U+2028 and U+2029 arms do. A file with lone CR line ends no longer has
  columns that count from 0.
- LineColumnTracker no longer rescans from byte 0 for an offset on a
continuation byte: no scan stops inside a sequence now.
- bun_core::strings::wtf8_codepoint_start is the code_point_start of the
lint's regex subject, moved so that the logger can call it too.
A warning of the CSS parser had no file for a plain sheet, no line text,
and a 0-based line. ParserOptions::warn* had a line and a column only,
and logged through Log::add_warning_fmt_line_col, the one logger entry
that takes no Source.

The parse entry points now take the Source, and each warn site passes
the byte offset of the tokenizer to ParserOptions::warn_at. The logger
builds the file, the namespace, the line, the column and the line text,
as it does for the diagnostics of every other parser.

Warnings go through the new Log::add_warning_fmt_no_long_excerpt. It
drops an excerpt of 120 bytes or more: the logger cuts such a line
around the position and pads the caret by the whole column, so the
warnings of a one-line sheet would print in the order of N squared
bytes.

ParserOptions::warn(&ParseError) stays for the errors that
error_recovery skips. A ParseError has no byte position, so such a
warning has the file and no line.

The warning for a nested "composes" is now at the declaration, as the
other two "composes" warnings are. It was at the start of a rule.

Log::add_warning_fmt_line_col, Log::add_warning_fmt_line_col_with_notes
and SourceLocation::to_logger_location are deleted.

I reviewed this version and didn't find any bugs. Because it changes the locator that every JS and CSS diagnostic goes through (error_stop_offset, the tracker's resume rule) and threads a &'a Source<'a> plus the raw NonNull<Log> through ParserOptions<'a>, a human look is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • error_stop_offset: the \r\n back-step cannot underflow (len-2 back-match implies offset >= 1), the end-of-file clamp is unchanged, and prev_code_point persists across tracker resumes so a cursor parked on \r still counts the pair as one line break.
  • wtf8_codepoint_start move: the old code_point_start only differed from wtf8_codepoint_at at end-of-text, which the 1..=3 back-scan never reaches, so src/lint/regex/subject.rs keeps its behavior.
  • Every caller of init_error_position/error_position now goes through init_or_null_impl, which computes the stop first; warn(&ParseError) (now Loc::EMPTY, line -1) is only reachable with error_recovery, which only keyframes.rs sets on a logger-less ParserOptions.
  • The CUT_EXCERPT_MIN drop rule: a left-cut excerpt is always >= 120 bytes; the one over-drop is a right-cut excerpt of exactly 120 bytes (offset 40 in the line), which the unit test pins.
Extended reasoning...

The change rewrites how bun_ast::Log locates diagnostics (CRLF and multi-byte stop offsets, column 1 after a lone CR, tracker resume without the continuation-byte rescan) and makes every CSS parse entry point take a Source so CSS warnings carry file, line, column and lineText; four producers (ParseTask, transpiler, css_internals, pm diff) were updated and no stale callers of the removed helpers remain. It touches no security-sensitive surface. Not approved outright because the diff is ~840 lines across the shared diagnostic path used by all loaders and relies on unsafe NonNull SAFETY invariants that now also cover the new source lifetime, and the Rust unit tests and new bun tests could not be executed in this session.

The warning for `:custom-fn(x)` and `::custom-fn(x)` was at the first
argument. It is now after the first colon, where the warning for a pseudo
with no arguments is.

I reviewed the reworked version (the four new commits) and didn't find any bugs; the excerpt window is now a single source of truth (Location::EXCERPT_BEFORE/EXCERPT_AFTER deriving CUT_EXCERPT_MIN), which settles my earlier note. Because this changes the shared logger path every JS/TS/JSON/CSS diagnostic goes through and the public CSS parse signatures, a human look would still be worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • error_stop_offset (src/ast/lib.rs): checked it is idempotent so the new debug_assert_eq! in LineColumnTracker::error_position holds (CRLF snap lands on \r, a continuation byte with no valid sequence stays put), that offset == 0 on \n cannot underflow, and that the only caller with Loc::EMPTY (ParserOptions::warn) returns from init_or_null_impl before reaching it.
  • wtf8_codepoint_start moved from src/lint/regex/wtf8.rs to bun_core: same semantics for the lint caller since start < at <= len never hits the end-of-text branch that code_point_at remapped.
  • add_warning_fmt_no_long_excerpt: the >= 120 drop rule keeps every left-cut excerpt out, at the cost of also dropping an uncut whole line of 120-123 bytes (the PR text states this trade-off; it is a product choice, not a defect).
  • All four producers (ParseTask, Transpiler::build_css_output, cssInternals, pm diff) now pass a Source, so ParserOptions::source is always set when a warning is logged.
Extended reasoning...

The diff reworks how src/ast/lib.rs maps a byte Loc to line/column/line text (CRLF and UTF-8 continuation snapping, column reset to 1 after a lone CR, named excerpt window constants) and routes CSS parser warnings through that logger with a Source and byte position, changing StyleSheet::parse/parse_with/parse_bundler and StyleAttribute::parse signatures and all four callers. It touches no auth, crypto or injection surface; the only unsafe is the pre-existing logger pointer in ParserOptions. Tests are extensive (Rust corpus tests, 19 new bundler tests, bake dev tests, parse-error-column matrix across LF/CRLF/CR). I did not approve because the shared logger path affects every diagnostic producer, the change is ~850 lines, the hunt ran dry rather than proving it, and a coderabbitai inline comment at src/css/selectors/parser.rs:1328 landed shortly before the last commit with no way to verify it was addressed.
