Problem

  • Readable.fromWeb(stream) drops data when a consumer already started the native stream (getReader(), a partial read, cancel()). A 4 MiB Bun.file().stream() reads as 3932160 bytes, a Blob as 0.
  • tryTransferToNativeReadable (src/js/internal/webstreams_adapters.ts:37) takes the native fast path whenever stream.$bunNativePtr is an object, even after materializeNativeSource started the handle.
  • The first consumer of an errored native stream starts its source. After addAbortSignal(signal, proc.stdout) aborts, getReader() stalls the child.

Fix

  • jsFunctionTransferToNativeReadableStream is the one check-and-claim: it returns the handle only if hasPendingNativeSource() (NativePending, not locked, live handle). Otherwise fromWeb reads through a reader.
  • fromWeb adds signal after the Readable exists, as node:stream: close or error the web stream when a native Readable.fromWeb ends #42584 does. Inside the constructor, an aborted signal fails the reader path with a TypeError.
  • materializeNativeSource skips a stream that is not readable.
  • Verified: test/js/node/stream/node-stream.test.js (24 new cases, all fail on main).

Background

  • A native ReadableStream (file, blob, pipe) starts NativePending. The first consumer's materializeIfNeeded() calls handle.start() and installs a controller that owns the handle. The fromWeb fast path drives the handle.
  • Considered hiding a started handle in $bunNativePtr: process.stdin reads it.

Downsides

  • A started native stream stays unlocked until the Readable's first read, like any non-native stream (node:stream: lock the web stream in Readable.fromWeb at once and keep the lock #43713 fixes both). It costs a discarded Readable.
  • An errored, never-read Bun.spawn stdout keeps its background drain: the parent buffers the child's output. Main blocks the child.
  • A signal costs one more native call, and a signal getter that throws cancels the web stream. Binary: .bun_builtins +735 bytes.
Notes

What changed since the first version. The first version claimed the handle before it built the Readable, and cancelled the handle when the constructor threw. After the merge with main the order is simpler. fromWeb adds the signal last, so no user code runs inside the constructor. The claim follows the constructor. A constructor that throws (an invalid highWaterMark) leaves the web stream untouched, as on main.

Why the signal moves. A started native stream now takes the reader path (ReadableFromWeb). Its constructor passed signal to super(). An aborted signal then ran _destroy before the private fields existed: the Readable failed with a TypeError and the source was not cancelled. On main that happens for every stream with no native handle. Without this part, a started native stream with an aborted signal would change from AbortError to TypeError. On the native path the old order ran destroy() before _destroy was installed, so the handle was never cancelled. The hunks in newStreamReadableFromReadableStream and in the ReadableFromWeb constructor are the same as in #42584. The PR that lands second drops them.

The errored stream. addAbortSignal(signal, webStream) errors a stream in place. A NativePending stream has no controller, so only m_state changes. Since #43699, nativePtrForJS() hides the handle of an errored stream, so fromWeb reads it through a reader. getReader() then ran materializeNativeSource, which started the handle. A file source opened its file: getReader() threw ENOENT for a missing file. A Bun.spawn pipe stopped its background drain and read only on pull, so the child blocked. for await, tee() and pipeTo() take the same path. Release 1.4.3 has the getReader() stall too.

  • The Rust callers of ReadableStream::error (Body.rs:1361, Response.rs:152) cancel the native source in the same call (ReadableStream.rs:295). None depends on a later start.
  • A closed NativePending stream is either detached (ReadableStream__closeConsumedAsBody) or locked (ReadableStream__lockNative), so it does not start its source today. The same early return covers it.

The predicate. hasPendingNativeSource() has no state check. nativePtrForJS() hides the handle of an errored stream, and cancel() and the body fast paths leave NativePending before they close the stream. The lock checks make it correct for a stream that ReadableStream__lockNative locked, which stays NativePending.

Not changed.

  • child_process.ts calls constructNativeReadable on the stdio stream of its own subprocess, which nothing has started. The debug assertion there now fires when the stream has a handle and the claim fails.
  • The Rust takers of a native handle (to_any_blob, the body extractors, native sinks) read the raw handle slot and keep their own is_disturbed || is_locked checks.

Left to other changes.

  • The reader path takes its reader in the first _read(), so the web stream stays unlocked until then. Main does that for every stream with no native handle, and a started native stream now shares it. node:stream: lock the web stream in Readable.fromWeb at once and keep the lock #43713 takes the reader inside fromWeb. An invalid signal or highWaterMark throws with the stream unlocked, as on main.
  • A web stream that is errored after fromWeb claimed its handle still delivers its data, as on main. node:stream: close or error the web stream when a native Readable.fromWeb ends #42584 makes the native Readable watch the stream.
  • An errored native stream does not release its source. A never-started one keeps the background drain of Bun.spawn, so the parent buffers the child's output (maxBuffer bounds it when set). One that was started before the error stalls the child, as on main. A release at the time of the error covers both cases. It changes webStreamControllerError for every native stream, so it is a separate change. A cancel inside materializeNativeSource would only run when a consumer touches the stream after the error.

Claim order. Considered a claim before the constructor: an invalid highWaterMark then spends the stream and needs a cancel. With the claim after the constructor, the web stream is untouched when the constructor throws.

Related open PRs on the same lines. #42584 (closes or errors the web stream when a native fromWeb ends), #43713 (stacked on it), #43748, #43732, #44590.

Node v26.3.0. fromWeb reads each option once. The web stream is locked when the getters of the signal run. An aborted signal fails the Readable with an AbortError and cancels the source with that error. The new tests assert the same.

Review. Self-reviewed: 8 concerns raised on the first version, 8 addressed. Review comments on this PR: cancel the claimed handle when the constructor throws (nothing is claimed at that point now, and a signal that throws destroys the Readable), an aborted signal that destroys the Readable inside the constructor (fixed by the signal order), long comments (each is one line now). On the reworked version: a responseBody finding that its author withdrew, and three optional findings that the section above answers.

Fail-before. With the src/ of main (5c6d4e2), all 24 new cases fail. A file after releaseLock() gives 786432 of 1048576 bytes. A blob after a partial read gives 16384. A spawn stdout never ends. A cancelled file stream yields 65536 bytes. getReader() on the errored missing file throws ENOENT. The child of the errored stdout blocks until the test times out.

Measurements. Release builds of main 5c6d4e2 and of this branch: .bun_builtins 2,710,513 to 2,711,248 bytes (+735), .text 82,231,705 in both, file size 107,808,480 in both. perf and valgrind are not installed in the build container, so there are no instruction counts. Counts from the diff, per fromWeb call: a stream with no native handle is unchanged (one $bunNativePtr read). A fresh native stream does one $bunNativePtr read less. With a signal there is one validateAbortSignal call more. child_process stdio does one $bunNativePtr read less.

Other suites run on the debug build. The rest of node-stream.test.js, test/js/web/streams/streams.test.js, test/js/web/fetch/{body,fetch-abort-stream-body,body-clone,body-mixin-errors}.test.ts, process-stdin.test.ts, node-stream-uint8array.test.ts, node-fetch.test.js, undici.test.ts, spawn-streaming-stdout.test.ts, readablestream-helpers.test.ts, child_process.test.ts, and upstream test-stream-add-abort-signal, test-webstreams-abort-controller, test-whatwg-readablestream, test-filehandle-readablestream, test-stream-readable-aborted, test-readable-from-web-enqueue-then-close, test-stream-readable-from-web-termination, test-webstream-readable-from, test-whatwg-webstreams-adapters-to-{readablestream,streamduplex,readablewritablepair}, test-whatwg-webstreams-coverage, test-stream-readable-to-web, test-stream-duplex-from, test-child-process-{stdio,spawn-event,stdout-flush,stdout-flush-exit,stdio-big-write-end,exec-maxbuf,flush-stdio,stdio-inherit}, test-stdin-from-file-spawn.

Pre-existing in this container. child_process.test.ts "spawn still works with more than 10240 fds open" fails with or without the change: a debug build cannot load its bundled modules when file descriptors run out.

…m no consumer has started

Readable.fromWeb() took the native fast path whenever the web stream had a
$bunNativePtr handle. The handle outlives materialization (process.stdin needs
it for ref/unref), so the check also passed after getReader() or cancel() had
started the handle. The NativeReadable then drove the handle from its current
offset: every chunk already queued in the web stream was lost, a cancelled file
stream was read again from disk, and an errored stream delivered its data.

jsFunctionTransferToNativeReadableStream is now the single check-and-claim. It
returns the handle when JSReadableStream::hasPendingNativeSource() holds (still
NativePending, readable, not locked, live handle) and leaves the stream
untouched otherwise. native-readable.ts claims before it constructs the
Readable, so no user getter runs between the check and the claim, and fromWeb
passes the option values it already read. Any other stream goes through the
reader-based ReadableFromWeb, like a plain ReadableStream.

materializeNativeSource no longer starts the handle of a stream that is already
errored. The reader path reaches it for an errored never-read stream, and a
started handle that nothing pulls holds a file's fd or stalls a child on a full
pipe.

Status

Closed in favor of #46528, which has this fix.

Repros, on bun 1.4.3 and on main at 5c6d4e2 (Linux x64).

Lost data after a consumer started the stream:

import { Readable } from "node:stream";
const path = "/tmp/big-file.bin";
await Bun.write(path, Buffer.alloc(4 * 1024 * 1024, "a"));
const count = r => new Promise(res => { let n = 0; r.on("data", c => (n += c.length)); r.on("end", () => res(n)); r.on("error", res); });
{ const s = Bun.file(path).stream(); console.log(await count(Readable.fromWeb(s))); }                                   // 4194304
{ const s = Bun.file(path).stream(); s.getReader().releaseLock(); console.log(await count(Readable.fromWeb(s))); }      // 3932160 on main, 4194304 with the fix
{ const s = new Blob(["hello"]).stream(); s.getReader().releaseLock(); console.log(await count(Readable.fromWeb(s))); } // 0 on main, 5 with the fix

A started source on an errored stream:

import { addAbortSignal } from "node:stream";
const proc = Bun.spawn({ cmd: [process.execPath, "-e", "process.stdout.write(Buffer.alloc(4 * 1024 * 1024, 'x'))"], stdout: "pipe" });
const controller = new AbortController();
addAbortSignal(controller.signal, proc.stdout);
controller.abort();
proc.stdout.getReader().read().catch(() => {});
console.log(await Promise.race([proc.exited, Bun.sleep(3000).then(() => "child still blocked")])); // "child still blocked" on main, 0 with the fix
proc.kill();

I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs. Because it changes native-handle transfer semantics across the C++ ReadableStream bindings and the node:stream fast path — including a new early-return in materializeNativeSource that affects every consumer of an errored NativePending stream — a human look would still be worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • hasPendingNativeSource() predicate covers mode, state, reader, m_lockedWithoutReader, and text-mode via nativePtrForJS(); the transfer is now one atomic check-and-claim call.
  • Handle is claimed before new Readable(options) runs user getters, closing the TOCTOU window; fromWeb now passes only the already-destructured option values.
  • constructNativeReadable (child_process path) still degrades to an ended Readable in release if the claim ever fails, matching the prior missing-handle behavior.
  • Tests follow harness conventions (tempDir, bunEnv, Buffer.alloc(n, fill), describe.concurrent, stdout drained concurrently with proc.exited, no sleeps).
Extended reasoning...

Overview

This PR fixes Readable.fromWeb over native-backed ReadableStreams that a consumer has already started (via getReader(), a partial read, cancel(), or addAbortSignal). It adds JSReadableStream::hasPendingNativeSource() and makes jsFunctionTransferToNativeReadableStream an atomic check-and-claim that returns the handle only when the stream is still NativePending, Readable, unlocked, and holds an object handle. On the JS side, native-readable.ts now claims the handle before new Readable(options) runs user getters, and webstreams_adapters.ts falls back to the reader-based ReadableFromWeb when no handle is available. materializeNativeSource gains an early return for streams already in a non-Readable state so an errored never-read stream never starts its handle. ~200 lines of new tests cover file/blob/response/spawn sources, TOCTOU via option getters, cancel/drain/abort paths, and a child-process stall guard.

Security risks

None identified. The change narrows when a fast path is taken (fail-closed toward the generic reader path) and does not touch auth, crypto, network validation, or untrusted-input parsing. The new predicate reads only C++-owned state; no user JS is executed inside it. Option getters are now read once from the destructured bag, reducing (not adding) re-entrancy exposure.

Level of scrutiny

Medium-high. The diff is ~270 lines across 7 files, but it sits at the intersection of JSC C++ bindings, native stream lifecycle (materializeNativeSource), and the node:stream compat layer — a path that backs Bun.file().stream(), Response.body, Blob.stream(), and Bun.spawn().stdout. The materializeNativeSource early-return in particular changes behavior for every caller reaching that function with a non-Readable state, and while the PR notes argue Rust callers already done() after erroring, that reasoning benefits from a maintainer's confirmation. This is not a mechanical or config-only change.

Other factors

No CODEOWNERS entries cover the changed paths. The bug hunter ran to dry_streak with no findings. Test coverage is thorough and follows repo conventions: tempDir/bunExe/bunEnv, Buffer.alloc(n, fill) payloads with distinct fill bytes to catch reordering, describe.concurrent for independent subprocess cases, subprocess stdout drained concurrently with proc.exited, error events wired to reject, and assertions on exact byte equality plus adapter-class identity (native vs ReadableFromWeb). The PR is bot-authored with a detailed self-review, but the semantic surface is broad enough that a human maintainer should sign off before merge.

…tor throws

The handle is claimed before new Readable(options) runs. A throw from the
constructor (an invalid highWaterMark or signal, a signal getter that throws)
leaves the web stream locked, as in Node, so nothing else can release the
handle. A Bun.spawn stdout kept its pipe open and buffered the child's output
with no owner. fromNativeHandle now cancels the handle and rethrows.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Jarred-Sumner pushed a commit that referenced this pull request Sep 12, 2026
…ng it (#42516)

### Problem
- `const body = res.body; await res.arrayBuffer()` (or `bytes()`,
`blob()`, `json()`, `formData()`) leaves `body` `readable` when a
string, `Blob`, typed array or file backs it. `isReadable(body)` returns
`true`, `Bun.inspect(body)` prints `state: 'readable'`, and `await
finished(body)` never settles. Node v26.3.0 and `text()` close the
stream.
- The cause is `ReadableStream::to_any_blob`
(`src/runtime/webcore/ReadableStream.rs:195`). It takes the payload out
of the native source and marks the stream disturbed and locked, but
never changes `m_state`. Since #42116 (not released) the stream stays
locked, so nothing can drain it either.
- `.body` read after the consume returns a stand-in stream that is
`readable` and not disturbed.

### Fix
- `to_any_blob` calls the new `ReadableStream__closeConsumedAsBody`: the
`markConsumedAsBody` flags, then a close.
- Correct because `to_any_blob` first rejects a disturbed or locked
stream. No reader or controller exists, so the close only sets the state
and settles the closed promise.
- `ReadableStream__used` makes the stand-in for a consumed body closed
and disturbed. The stand-in for a body still being read is unchanged.
- Verified: `test/js/web/fetch/body.test.ts` (99 new cases, 50 fail on
main), plus the suites in Notes. Self-reviewed: 3 changes asked, 3 made.

### Background
- Such a body gets a lazy native `ReadableStream`. It gets a controller
only when something reads it.
- Until then a consumer can take the whole payload back as a `Blob`. The
body methods, `clone()`, `Bun.serve`, `fetch()` uploads, `Bun.write` and
`Bun.spawn` stdin do so when the payload is in memory or is a file.
- #42416 made `isReadable()`, `isErrored()` and `isDisturbed()` read the
stream's own state. `finished()` waits on a closed promise that each
terminal transition settles.

<details><summary>Notes</summary>

**Origin.** A differential run against node v26.3.0 after #42416 found
this. No user reported it. On 1.4.2 the stream was also left `readable`,
but it was unlocked, so `body.getReader().read()` returned `done` and
closed it. #42116 keeps the stream locked (as undici and Chromium do),
which removed that way out. This PR should land before the next release.

**Repro.**

```js
import { isReadable, isDisturbed } from "node:stream";
import { finished } from "node:stream/promises";
const res = new Response("hello world");
const body = res.body;
await res.arrayBuffer();
console.log(isReadable(body), isDisturbed(body), body.locked, Bun.inspect(body));
await finished(body); // main: never settles
```

| | main b993710 | this PR | node v26.3.0 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `.body` then `arrayBuffer()` / `bytes()` / `blob()` / `json()` /
`formData()` | readable, `finished()` pending | closed | closed |
| `.body` then `text()` | closed | closed | closed |
| `new Response(blob.stream()).bytes()`, `Bun.file().stream()`, `new
Response(Bun.file()).body` | readable | closed | closed |
| `fetch()` response, `.body` taken, whole body arrived, then
`arrayBuffer()` | readable | closed | closed |
| `Bun.serve` sends it, `fetch()` uploads it, `Bun.write` writes it,
`Bun.spawn` stdin (payload in memory or a file) | readable | closed |
n/a |
| `await res.text(); res.body` (stand-in) | readable, not disturbed |
closed, disturbed | closed, disturbed |
| old `.body` after `clone()` | readable forever | closed at `clone()` |
readable until a branch is drained, then closed |
| JS-source stream | closed | closed | closed |

The error messages of `getReader()`, `cancel()`, `tee()`, `pipeTo()`,
`text()`, `Bun.readableStreamToText()` and `new Response(body)` on the
consumed stream are the same as before. `finished()` registered before
the consume settles too.

**Not in this PR.**
- A stream that a native sink attaches to while the payload still
arrives (`ReadableStream__lockNative`: a `fetch()` upload, `Bun.write`,
`Bun.spawn` stdin or `Bun.serve` response of a body that still streams).
It does not go through `to_any_blob`. #42477 fixes it. This PR should
land first. The conflict in `WebStreamsExports.cpp` is keep-both, and
both use `readableStreamCloseIfPossible` for the close.
- `Readable.fromWeb()` on a native stream (`m_transferred`): the web
stream stays `readable` after the node stream ends. It is the same on
1.4.2. The fix touches the code that #42281 changes, so it follows that
PR.
- The `node-fetch` and `undici` shims wrap `res.body` in a node
`Readable`. Since #42116, `res.body.resume()` or `destroy()` after a
body method emits `'error'` (the stream is locked). 1.4.2 emits `'end'`
/ `'close'`. This PR does not change that. It is tracked separately.
- `.body` read while `text()` is still pending returns a stand-in that
stays `readable` and locked. Nothing tells it how the read ends, so it
must not report closed. A new test pins this.
- `getReader().releaseLock()` marks a native stream disturbed: #33461.
`WritableStream` state: #42457.

**The stand-in for a consumed body** is also what `.body` returns once a
native consumer took a body that still streams (`Bun.write(path, res)`
sets the body to used at once). It reads closed from then on. Before,
`finished()` on it never settled.

**Self-review.** It asked for three changes. The stand-in for a body
still being read keeps its old state (`ReadableStream::in_use`). The
close goes through `readableStreamCloseIfPossible`, not a hand-written
state write. The commit message and this body name the excluded paths
and say that the native consumers take this path only when the payload
is in memory or is a file.

**Suites run** with the debug build and
`BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1`: `test/js/web/fetch/body.test.ts`

Jarred-Sumner pushed a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 8, 2026
…with the buffer (#38003)

### Problem

- A native byte stream first read after its producer failed ends clean
after 0 bytes. Sources: `fetch` body, `req.body`, `S3File.stream()`,
`HTMLRewriter` output. `Bun.serve` answers an empty `200`. An S3 copy
stores an empty object.
- If a reader took part of the buffer, the process aborts: `panic: range
end index 262144 out of range for slice of length 0`
(`ByteStream::take_buffer`).
- Cause: `ByteStream::append(Err)` stores the error, drops `buffer` and
keeps `offset`. `on_start`, `to_any_blob` and `Bun.serve` read that as
"ended, empty".

### Fix

- A stored error makes `on_start` return `Start::Ready` and
`to_any_blob` return `None`, so the first pull delivers it. `Bun.serve`
hands it to its sink, and `end_chunk` calls `error()`.
- `buffer` and `offset` become one `Buffered` value. Every method that
empties the bytes resets the index.
- Verified: six test files (Notes). 24 new tests fail without the
change.
- Self-reviewed: 2 concerns raised, 2 addressed.

### Background

- `ByteStream` is the native source of a streamed body.
- A pull copies into a view. Bytes that do not fit stay buffered.
`offset` counts the ones already taken.
- Weighed a store in `append(Err)` and a clamp in `take_buffer`. Six
sites empty the buffer, and a clamp hides a wrong index.

### Downsides

- A handler that returned such a body got a silent `200`. It now gets
`error()` or the default 500.
- One test of `pending.result` per stream start and per `Bun.serve`
attach. Release `text`: +768 bytes.
- Still open: `Bun.write(path, stream)` rejects after it truncated the
file. A started body that did not fail loses its queued bytes (#33461,
#42281).

<details><summary>Notes</summary>

**Origin and reach.** No user reported either symptom. A fuzzer found
the panic, and a differential run against node v26.3.0 found the empty
body. The panic ships since 1.4.0: #38656 gave `take_buffer` its
`drain(..consumed)`. The review thread at
#43410 (comment) named
the stale `offset` on 09-19 and got the answer that the crash would have
its own change with its own test. This is that change, inside this PR so
that `ByteStream.rs` has one pull.

**Three routes reach `take_buffer` with an index left behind an emptied
buffer.**

1. `Bun.serve` renders a `Source::Bytes` body that a consumer started
and let go (`res.body.getReader().releaseLock()`), after the producer
failed. `do_render_with_body` calls `drain()`.
2. `Readable.fromWeb()` on such a stream. `on_start` took the buffer and
kept the index, then `native-readable.ts` calls `drain()`. This one
needs no failure.
3. The stream's own pull loop in text mode (`res.textStream()`). The
adapter keeps its pull view there, so `nativeSourcePullImpl`
(`BunStreamSource.cpp`) calls `handle.drain()` before each pull. A body
that fails after a partial read is enough. No second consumer is
involved.

Sites that emptied `buffer` and kept `offset` on main: `append(Err)`,
the buffer-action error arm of `on_data`, `on_cancel`, the stored-error
arm of `to_buffered_value`, the `OwnedAndDone` arm of `on_start`,
`to_any_blob`. `Buffered` offers `take`, `clear`, `copy_out`, `adopt`
and `extend`, and nothing else writes the two fields.

**Before and after** (release build of main, debug build of this
branch):

| script | main | this PR |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `HTMLRewriter` output, probed with `getReader().releaseLock()`,
400,007 bytes of output, then a handler throws, returned from
`Bun.serve` | panic, exit 134 | `500`, `error()` got `boom` |
| the same with exactly one pull view of output (262,144 bytes) | `200
""` | `500`, `error()` got `boom` |
| the same after only `void res.body` | `200 ""` | `500`, `error()` got
`boom` |
| `const body = res.body`, upstream resets, `for await (const c of
body)` | ends cleanly after 0 of 100,000 bytes | rejects `ECONNRESET`
(node: rejects) |
| `res.textStream()` reader, one view read, upstream resets, next read |
panic, exit 134 | the read rejects `ECONNRESET` |
| `Readable.fromWeb()` on a probed rewriter output, clean end | panic,
exit 134 | the bytes the native source still holds |
| `req.body` read after the uploading client went away | `{ done: true
}` | rejects `AbortError` |
| `new Response(body).arrayBuffer()` / `bytes()` / `blob()` / `json()`
on a body that failed while idle | resolve empty | reject `ECONNRESET` |
| `new Bun.S3Client({}).file(key).stream()` (no credentials), then `for
await`, a reader, `pipeTo`, `tee`, `new Response(s).bytes()` or
`.blob()` | end cleanly after 0 bytes | reject
`ERR_S3_MISSING_CREDENTIALS` |
| `client.file(key).stream()` read after the download failed: a body cut
short, a missing key (404), a denied key (403) | ends cleanly after 0
bytes | rejects `ConnectionClosed`, `NoSuchKey`, `AccessDenied` |
| `client.write(key, new Response(s))` or `Bun.write(s3file, new
Response(s))` with such a stream `s` | resolves 0, a `PUT` of 0 bytes
replaces the object | rejects, no request goes out |
| `fetch(url, { method: "POST", body: s })` | resolves 200, the server
gets a complete POST with `Content-Length: 0` | rejects, the server gets
no complete request |
| `HTMLRewriter` output `.body` taken, a handler throws or the upstream
resets, then the first read | `{ done: true }` | rejects with the
handler's or the upstream's error |

**Four sources, one script.** Each transfer announces 100 bytes, sends
50, and is cut by a FIN 20 ms later. The stream is taken at once and
read 100 ms later: `(await fetch(url)).body`, `req.body` in `Bun.serve`,
`s3.file(key).stream()`, `new HTMLRewriter().transform(await
fetch(url)).body`. A release canary (367d939) and a debug build of
main bd599f5 end all four cleanly with 0 bytes, 3 of 3 runs each. A
debug build of this branch rejects all four, 3 of 3 runs, with the error
the same read gets when it is made at once: `ECONNRESET`, `AbortError`,
`S3Error ConnectionClosed`, `ECONNRESET`.

**What stays open.** For a stream source, `Bun.write(path, source)`
opens the destination with `O_TRUNC` before it reads the stream
(`pipe_readable_stream_to_blob`, `Blob.rs:1448`). With a failed stream,
or a `Response` or `Request` that wraps one, the write now rejects, and
a file that held 777 bytes holds 0. Main does the same for a bare
stream, and resolved 0 for the wrappers. Only `Bun.write(path, res)`
with the fetch `Response` itself keeps the old bytes. An S3 destination
keeps the old object, because no request goes out. This PR does not
change when `Bun.write` truncates.

Two behaviours change only in the state that used to abort: `on_start`
and `resume` hand over the bytes no consumer took, not the whole buffer,
so a prefix a reader already holds is not sent twice. The `to_write ==
0` arm of `on_pull` is gone: it handled a buffer whose bytes were all
taken but not dropped, which cannot exist now.

The `HTMLRewriter` paces its input by the whole buffer, the taken prefix
included (#38656). `Buffered::held_len()` keeps that. Counting only the
untaken bytes made `html-rewriter.test.js` "a locked reader paces the
input by its reads" fail, which is how the difference showed.

**Self-review.** Two concerns survived: that the change may claim
severity but not demand (so this body states that no user reported it
and lists the routes), and that a rename in `ByteStream.rs` races the
other open pulls on the file (it now ships inside this one).

**Since the first revision of this PR.** Merged up to main. The
`Blob.rs` hunk is gone: main rewrote `pipe_readable_stream_to_blob` and
marks the pump's rejected promise handled there.
`s3-write-to-file-sync-close.test.ts` now asserts the rejection instead
of accepting both outcomes. `end_sink_with_pending_error` uses main's
`detach_sink` plus `sink.end`. The fixture variants sit in main's
`nativeBodies` table (#40596). The "failed after attach" control is
dropped: main's `proxied-fetch-after-status` row covers it with #40596's
contract (the connection closes without a complete message). One variant
is new: the probed rewriter output from the first row above.

**Tests.** `bun bd test` on Linux x64:

- New or ported, failing without the change (24):
`serve-stream-body-error.test.ts` (8), `body-mixin-errors.test.ts` (9),
`bun-server.test.ts` (1), `fetch.stream.test.ts` (2),
`s3-stream-error-gc.test.ts` (2), `html-rewriter.test.js` (2). Each was
run against a debug build of main bd599f5, the first file against the
release canary.
- `s3-write-to-file-sync-close.test.ts` passes with and without the
change: main already rejects that write, and the test now pins it.
- After the rebase onto main (bd599f5): `serve-stream-body-error` 34
pass, `body-mixin-errors` 23, `s3-stream-error-gc` 4,
`s3-write-to-file-sync-close` 1, `html-rewriter.test.js` 188,
`bun-server` 81, `fetch.stream` 121.
- This container gives the debug build about two cores. `bun-server` and
`fetch.stream` were run with `--max-concurrency` lowered: with the
default, their concurrent subprocess tests pass the 5 s limit, with and
without the change. The "Content-Length response works (multiple parts)"
rows of `fetch.stream` take 2.1 s to 4.9 s each on both builds, and in
one run two of them passed the limit.
- Earlier, before the rebase: `fetch-backpressure` 127, `body-stream`
9086, `body` 774, `streams` 624, `node-stream` 112. `serve.test.ts`: 325
pass. "root range port" and "/bun:info to loopback" fail on the release
build of main too (the container runs as root).

`bytestream-partial-read-error-fixture.ts` stages the failure with an
`HTMLRewriter` whose handler throws on the second chunk, so every step
runs on the JS thread in order. It waits for the handler to have run,
checks that the first read is exactly one pull view, and requires the
next read to reject with the handler's own error. A text-mode reader is
required: a byte reader's full view retires the adapter's pending view,
and the next pull then skips `drain()`. Against the released bun the
fixture aborts with the panic in its header.

`s3-stream-stored-error-fixture.ts` has two modes. With no credentials
the download fails inside `stream()`, so every reader and sink runs
against a stored failure and no timing is involved. For the failures on
the wire, the stub closes the connection behind each answer. The read
starts after the client has closed its end and one more request has made
the round trip through the HTTP thread. The fixture writes to an
absolute path: `Bun.write("out.bin", new Response(""))` with a relative
path to a file that does not exist rejects with `ENOENT` from
`truncate`, on main too. That is a separate defect.

**Size.** `size` of the release binary: `text` 80,676,945 on main,
80,677,713 with the change. `data` and `bss` are equal. Measured before
the rebase.

**History.** The branch is rebased onto main at bd599f5: one commit for
the change, and one for the tests of the S3 and `HTMLRewriter` sources.

**Related open pulls.** #33461 and #36110 give opposite answers for a
started body that did not fail (send everything, or refuse). #42281
keeps `Readable.fromWeb()` from taking a started native source. None of
them touches `ByteStream.rs`. #43410 rewrites how `append(Err)` stores a
JS error and needs a rebase after this.

The Readable constructor ran addAbortSignal() before either adapter was set up.
An aborted signal destroyed a reader-based Readable before its private fields
existed, so it failed with a TypeError, and a native Readable before _destroy
was installed, so the claimed handle was never cancelled. A started native
stream now takes the reader-based path, which made the TypeError reachable for
streams that reported an AbortError before.

fromWeb validates the signal, builds the Readable without it, and adds it last.
No user code runs inside the constructor any more, so the special case for a
signal getter in native-readable.ts goes away. A failed call destroys the
Readable, which cancels the handle or the web stream.
No user code runs in the Readable constructor now that fromWeb adds the signal
last. So the claim can follow the constructor: a constructor that throws (an
invalid highWaterMark) leaves the web stream untouched, as on main, and there is
no claimed handle to cancel. webstreams_adapters.ts keeps its $bunNativePtr
filter, so a stream with no native handle does not load native-readable.
…Reader() case

main hides the handle of an errored stream since #43699, so the errored rows and
the drained rows pass with or without this change. The same change makes the
state check in hasPendingNativeSource() redundant. The new case reads an errored,
never-read file stream through getReader(): starting the source would open the
file.

The merge risk note in the CodeRabbit summary refers to its responseBody comment. CodeRabbit withdrew that comment in the review thread: #42281 (comment)

Readable.fromWeb never forwarded responseBody on main. node-fetch and undici construct ReadableFromWeb directly with responseBody: true, and this PR does not change that path. No change is needed.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I checked the already-aborted signal ordering raised on the previous revision: it is addressed on this push — newStreamReadableFromReadableStream now attaches the signal via addAbortSignal only after attachNativeHandle has installed _destroy, and the sibling child_process.ts caller passes {} with no signal, so neither path can destroy the Readable before the handle-cancelling _destroy exists.

Extended reasoning...

The change moves the native-handle claim for Readable.fromWeb into a single C++ host function gated by the new JSReadableStream::hasPendingNativeSource() predicate, splits native-readable.ts into a claim-or-fallback path for fromWeb and an asserting path for child_process, reorders signal handling to run after the Readable exists, and adds an errored-state early return in materializeNativeSource. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface. Three confirmed findings are posted inline; this note only records that the prior revision's aborted-signal ordering concern is resolved by the new addAbortSignal placement and the signal-free child_process caller.

Closing: #46528 covers this change.

The tests stay on this branch: the block "Readable.fromWeb over a native stream" in test/js/node/stream/node-stream.test.js.
