I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs. Because it changes core ByteStream completion semantics (on_start/to_any_blob) and adds a new error-render path in RequestContext::do_render_with_body, with behaviour changes rippling to many consumers (body mixins, static routes, HEAD framing, spawn stdin), a human look would still be worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
- The three
to_any_blob().unwrap()calls insideon_data'sbuffer_actionbranch remain safe:to_buffered_valuerejects a stored error before installing the action, andappend(Err)panics if one is set, sohas_pending_error()cannot hold there. - The new
Source::Byteserror branch indo_render_with_bodymirrors the existingRejectedarm's cleanup ordering (swap outresponse_body_readable_stream_ref, report/reject,stream.cancel,readable_ref.deinit). use_as_any_blob/use_as_any_blob_allow_non_utf8_stringalready handledNonevia.unwrap_or(default blob), so their outcome is unchanged (still an empty blob) and no error is leaked — it stays on the stream and is released with theLockedvalue.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
This PR fixes a data-loss/silent-failure bug: when a native ByteStream (e.g. a fetch() response body) receives a producer error while no consumer is attached, the error is stored in pending.result and the buffer is dropped. Two fast paths — ByteStream::to_any_blob and ByteStream::on_start — read has_received_last_chunk && buffer.is_empty() as a clean EOF, so the error was discarded and every downstream consumer (Bun.serve, body mixins, getReader().read(), static routes) saw a successful empty body instead of the failure.
The fix adds has_pending_error() and consults it in to_any_blob (return None) and on_start (return Start::Ready so the first on_pull delivers the error). RequestContext::do_render_with_body's Source::Bytes branch now checks take_pending_error() and routes it through a new report_and_reject_stream helper extracted verbatim from do_render_stream's already-rejected arm, so native and JS streams that are already errored at render time get identical treatment. Comprehensive tests are added in both the serve fixture and the body-mixin suite.
Security risks
None identified. The change is error-propagation only; no new input parsing, no auth/crypto, no untrusted data handling. If anything it improves correctness by surfacing a previously-silent truncation.
Level of scrutiny
High. ByteStream is the shared native source behind fetch bodies, request bodies, and HTMLRewriter output; to_any_blob/on_start are reached from Body::to_blob_if_possible and every consumer that follows. RequestContext::do_render_with_body is the hot response-render path in Bun.serve. The PR's own behaviour table lists ~12 distinct consumer outcomes that change. While each change is small and the reasoning is very well documented, the blast radius and the number of callers whose None fallbacks now become live make this worth a maintainer's eyes.
Other factors
- I traced the internal
.unwrap()callers ofto_any_blob()inon_dataand confirmed the invariant (buffer_action.is_some() ⟹ !has_pending_error()) still holds viato_buffered_value's pre-check andappend(Err)'s panic guard, so the newNonereturn cannot reach them. - The
report_and_reject_streamextraction is a byte-for-byte move of the inline block in theRejectedarm; the new call site uses the same cleanup sequence. - The two
use_as_any_blob*callers inBody.rsalready.unwrap_or(empty blob)onNone, so their observable output is unchanged from before (an empty blob either way); the stored error is released when theLockedvalue is dropped, so no leak is introduced there. - Tests are thorough, deterministic (raw socket upstream that closes only after
res.bodyis materialized, then pollsBun.inspect(res)until the body value transitions), and cover bothBun.servemodes plus every body mixin. The PR description records fails-before/passes-after and a broad regression sweep. - No prior review comments; only the robobun status note.

src/runtime/server/RequestContext.rs:3273-3280— The PR description (Fix section, 'Why this is the right contract' paragraph, and the behaviour table) describes the earlierreport_and_reject_streamrevision from commit 2b9d1db, not theend_sink_with_pending_error()→end_chunkimplementation that landed in 726b3bc. It says a native errored-before-render body renders '200, empty chunked body, error() not called (same as an errored JS stream)', but the tests at serve-stream-body-error.test.ts:90-102 pin the opposite:500,err-body:ECONNRESET,errorCb: 2,stderr: "". Please update the description so reviewers and future archaeology see the actual contract (native errored-before-render →error(), intentionally divergent from the JS-stream 200-empty-chunked path).Extended reasoning...
What is stale
The PR description was written against commit 2b9d1db and never updated after the s3 test failure prompted the refactor in 726b3bc. Three concrete mismatches:
1.
report_and_reject_streamdoes not exist. The Fix section says "do_render_with_body'sSource::Bytesbranch takes the stored error and routes it throughreport_and_reject_stream, a small helper extracted fromdo_render_stream's already-rejected arm". Grep confirms no such function exists in the tree. The CodeRabbit inline comment on this PR still references it at lines 2940-2948 because it was analysing the earlier commit. The landed diff instead installs the sink, defers metadata whenbyte_stream.has_pending_error(), and callsbyte_stream.end_sink_with_pending_error()(RequestContext.rs:3273-3280), which routes throughSinkHandle::end(Some(err))→end_chunk.2. The described wire behaviour is the opposite of what the tests pin. The description and the behaviour table say a native errored-before-render body produces "the Response's own status and headers, empty chunked body,
error()not invoked, and the error reported to stderr" / "200, empty chunked body, error on stderr,error()not called (same as an errored JS stream)". Butend_chunkat RequestContext.rs:3370-3377 checks!has_written_status()and callsthis.run_error_handler(js_err)— and thehas_pending_error()branch at lines 3256-3265 explicitly defers metadata precisely so that check is true. The test at serve-stream-body-error.test.ts:90-102 asserts the actual outcome on every axis:axis description says tests assert status 200 HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Errorbody empty chunked err-body:ECONNRESETerror()not invoked errorCb: 2stderr error reported ""(error() handled it)3. The 'identical to JS streams' rationale no longer describes what shipped. The 'Why this is the right contract' paragraph justifies making native and JS errored-before-render streams behave identically ("Whether that stream is JS-backed or native-backed is an implementation detail the handler cannot observe, so the native one must not get a third behaviour"). But the tests deliberately pin them to different behaviours: JS
pull-throw→ 200 / empty chunked /errorCb: 0/ stderr report (lines 34-56); native → 500 /error()body /errorCb: 2/ no stderr. The test comment at lines 75-83 gives the actual rationale: "Nothing has been committed to the client at that point, so the failure goes to error() exactly as it does when the handler returns the failed fetch() Response itself, or when such a producer fails right after Bun.serve attaches (see end_chunk)."Step-by-step trace of the actual behaviour
- Handler returns
new Response(body)wherebodyis a native ByteStream whose producer already failed (has_received_last_chunk = true,pending.result = Err(ECONNRESET), buffer empty). to_any_blob()now returnsNonebecausehas_pending_error()is true (ByteStream.rs:746), soto_blob_if_possibleleaves the bodyLockedanddo_render_with_bodyreaches theSource::Bytesbranch.- RequestContext.rs:3211-3213:

byte_stream.end_sink_with_pending_error()takes the stored error and callssink.end(Some(err)), which reachesend_chunk. end_chunksees!has_written_status()→ callsthis.run_error_handler(js_err)→ the user'serror()callback runs and returns the 500 response. Nothing is written to stderr becauseerror()handled it.
Why this matters
The code and tests are internally consistent — there is no runtime defect here. But the PR description is what reviewers read to understand the intended contract, and it currently states a contract the tests would reject. Anyone doing archaeology on this change (or evaluating the JS-vs-native divergence) will be misled. The behaviour table's first two rows and the 'Why this is the right contract' paragraph need rewriting to describe the
end_chunk-based path and to justify (or at least state) why native errored-before-render bodies now go toerror()while JS ones keep the 200-empty-chunked contract.Fix
Update the PR description: remove the
report_and_reject_streamreference, replace the first two rows of the behaviour table with500 via error()(or "default 500 + stderr" when noerror()is configured), and rewrite the contract paragraph to match the test comment's rationale — that a native error known before any bytes are committed is routed toerror()the same way a post-attach failure orreturn resis, rather than mirroring the JS-stream path. - Handler returns

I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs. Because it changes error-propagation semantics on a hot Bun.serve path (the native ByteStream attach in do_render_with_body) with ref-count implications, and the error-channel routing was already reworked once after review, a human look would still be worthwhile.
Checked: has_pending_error() is guarded consistently across to_any_blob, on_start, and the Source::Bytes fast path; append(Err) always clears the buffer, so has_body_bytes is false when the deferred-metadata branch runs and end_chunk sees !has_written_status().
Traced end_sink_with_pending_error → SinkHandle::end → AnyRequestContext::end_chunk, which adopts the +1 from this.ref_() at RequestContext.rs:3222 and checks is_aborted_or_ended() on entry; the caller returns immediately without touching this afterward.
The extracted end_sink helper writes self.sink/self.sink_paused before sink.end() so no ByteStream field is touched after the re-entrant call; Blob.rs set_handled matches the pattern in s3/client.rs and html_rewriter.rs.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR fixes ByteStream reporting a stored producer error as a clean empty body. Runtime changes span three files: ByteStream.rs adds has_pending_error() / end_sink_with_pending_error() and guards to_any_blob and on_start on the stored error; RequestContext.rs extends the Source::Bytes attach path to skip the buffered-blob fast path, defer metadata, and deliver the stored error through end_chunk; Blob.rs marks the pump's already-rejected promise handled before forwarding it. Test coverage is extensive (three new fixture variants in serve-stream-body-error.test.ts, seven body-mixin cases, an upload-abort case in bun-server.test.ts, and a tightened S3 test).
Security risks
None. This is error-propagation plumbing; no parsing of untrusted input, no auth/crypto/permissions.
Level of scrutiny
High. do_render_with_body is the core Bun.serve response path and the change has ref-count implications: end_sink_with_pending_error synchronously drives end_chunk, which RequestContextRef::adopts the +1 taken at line 3222 and may free the context. I traced this and it is balanced (the caller of do_render_with_body holds its own ref, and after end_sink_with_pending_error returns true nothing dereferences this), and it matches the existing on_data → end_sink → end_chunk shape. I also verified append(Err) clears the buffer in both capacity branches, so has_body_bytes is always false when an error is stored, keeping the metadata-deferral branch and !has_written_status() in end_chunk consistent.
Other factors
The design decision — route the stored error through end_chunk → error() rather than handle_reject_stream — was already reworked once in this PR after review; that plus the user-visible behavior change (empty 200 → error()/500 across several consumers, per the PR's before/after table) is the kind of policy call a maintainer should confirm. All CodeRabbit and comment-cop threads are resolved in the current revision (comments are one-liners, polling loops are bounded, upstream sockets are destroyed on cleanup).

I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs. It changes user-visible behavior in a core code path (Bun.serve body rendering, ByteStream error propagation) and encodes a policy decision about which channel stored native-stream errors reach, so a human sign-off would still be worthwhile.

Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR fixes ByteStream reporting a stored producer error (one that arrived while nothing was attached) as a clean empty body. Three sites are changed: to_any_blob() returns None instead of an empty blob when an error is stored; on_start() returns Ready instead of Empty so the first pull delivers the error; and the Source::Bytes fast path in RequestContext::do_render_with_body now attaches to such a stream and delivers the stored error through end_sink_with_pending_error() → end_chunk, which routes it to the server's error() hook. A one-line set_handled is added in Blob::pipe_readable_stream_to_blob so the newly-surfaced rejection isn't also reported as unhandled. Four test files gain coverage for the fetch/HTMLRewriter, request-body, body-mixin, and S3 producers.
Security risks
None identified. The change surfaces errors that were previously swallowed; it does not widen any input surface, change validation, or touch auth/crypto.
Level of scrutiny
High. RequestContext is the Bun.serve response rendering path and ByteStream backs every native ReadableStream (fetch bodies, request bodies, HTMLRewriter output). The change involves ref-count transfer across a re-entrant callback (sink.end → end_chunk → user error() → possible GC/close), and it changes user-visible behavior: handlers that previously received a silent empty 200 will now have error() invoked (or get a default 500), and body-mixin methods that resolved empty now reject.
Other factors
- The PR has been through one revision cycle: the first revision routed through
handle_reject_streamand was reworked to useend_chunkso pre-attach and post-attach failures share one policy. The current design is well-argued in the description. - Test coverage is thorough: three fixture variants (before-render, rewriter-before-render, after-attach control) × both modes × with/without
error(), plus the body-mixin family, request-body abort, and the tightened S3 test. All are stated to fail on the unfixed build. - CodeRabbit's three findings are resolved (bounded polling loops added, socket cleanup added, and the
run_error_handlerliveness concern withdrawn after the rework). The comment-cop "paragraph-long comment" flags were addressed by trimming to one-line comments. - I traced the memory-safety implications of the new
end_sink_with_pending_errorcall site and found the ref adopted correctly with no post-free access;end_sinkmirrors the existingon_dataerror arm exactly. Theto_any_blobchange is safe at every.unwrap()call site because those paths are guarded by earlier Err checks. - The remaining reason to defer is scope: this is a deliberate behavioral/policy change in a hot path, not a mechanical fix, and warrants a maintainer's sign-off on the
error()-routing decision.
…#40596) ### Problem - A `Bun.serve` Response whose body stream fails before any body byte is written is delivered to the client as a complete message: the Response's status and headers, `Transfer-Encoding: chunked`, an empty body and a clean `0\r\n\r\n`. `curl` exits 0. A proxied upstream body that dies before its first chunk is forwarded the same way, and nothing is reported. Only a failure after the first body byte closed the connection without the terminator (#32842). - Cause: three sites in `src/runtime/server/RequestContext.rs` handle a body failure after the status line is committed (`handle_reject` for a direct stream's synchronous `pull()` throw, `handle_reject_stream` for a JS stream, `end_chunk` for a native byte stream). Each force-closed only when `is_http_write_called()` and otherwise called `end_stream()`, which writes the terminating chunk. ### Fix - The three sites share a new `close_incomplete_stream`: while the response is still pending, `force_close()` the connection, whether or not body bytes went out first. Once the sink has already ended the response, `end_stream()` only releases the context, as before. - Correct because a chunked message is complete only with its terminator (RFC 9112 section 7). An empty chunked body with a terminator is as complete as a truncated one. Closing without it is the only way HTTP/1.1 can signal an incomplete message. When the status is still in the cork buffer, the close discards it and the client sees an empty reply, the same as Node's `res.destroy()` before the headers flush. - `end_chunk` (HTMLRewriter output, a proxied `fetch()` body) no longer drops the producer's error: it reports it in both modes through the shared `report_committed_body_error`, which also gives native bodies the bake dev server error page that JS streams already had. This carries the remaining parts of #39442, closed in favor of this PR. - Verified: `test/js/bun/http/serve-stream-body-error.test.ts` (JS stream variants, pending error after the headers, HTMLRewriter and proxied fetch bodies in both modes, two dev server rows; 17 of 26 fail on stock bun). Also `serve.test.ts`, `serve-direct-readable-stream.test.ts`, `async-iterator-stream.test.ts`, `serve-http3.test.ts`, `serve-error-handler-stream.test.ts`, `serve-stream-reject-flush-leak.test.ts`, `text-encoder-stream.test.ts`, `html-rewriter.test.js`. ### Background - `RequestContext` is the per-request state of `Bun.serve`. `do_render_stream` writes the Response's status and headers into the corked uWS response before it attaches the body stream, so by the time a body error arrives `has_written_status()` is already true and `error()` cannot supply a replacement. That contract is unchanged here: `error()` is still not called once the status is committed. - uWS corks a socket while a request handler runs: writes go to a per-socket buffer that is flushed when the handler returns. `force_close()` closes the socket directly and drops that buffer, so a synchronous failure leaves nothing on the wire. An asynchronous failure arrives after the flush, so the client gets the headers and then a reset. - Behavior change: the tests that pinned the old contract ("throw on pull renders headers", "async generator ... continues to send the headers", the pre-first-byte variants in `serve-stream-body-error.test.ts`) now expect the connection to close without a complete response. <details><summary>Notes</summary> Wire before the fix, for `new Response(new ReadableStream({ start(c) { c.enqueue(chunk); c.error(new Error("boom")); } }))`: ``` HTTP/1.1 200 OK Content-Type: text/plain;charset=utf-8 Date: ... Transfer-Encoding: chunked 0 ``` After: the connection closes with 0 bytes sent (the status was still corked). For a stream whose first `pull()` is asynchronous, the headers were already flushed, so the client gets `HTTP/1.1 200 OK` plus headers and then a connection reset with no terminating chunk. Both are incomplete messages. The error reaches stderr through the existing reporters; the production-mode asynchronous JS path stays quiet, as today. The forced close sends a RST, and a RST discards data the peer has not read yet (always on Windows). The tests that expect the status line on the wire before the failure therefore trigger the failure from the client's data handler, once the status line has arrived. uWS terminates the header block only with the first body byte, so those tests wait for the status line, not for a blank line. Dev server exception: under a bake dev server (`development: true` plus an HTML route), a body that fails after the status is committed gets the dev error page appended and the response ends normally, so the browser shows the error after what was already streamed. JS streams always did this; native bodies now take the same branch. Probed sources, all now closed incomplete: `controller.error` in `start`, synchronous and asynchronous `pull()` throw, async generator throw, `Readable.toWeb` of an erroring node stream, a throwing `TransformStream`, `DecompressionStream` on bad bytes, a `type: "direct"` stream that throws, an HTMLRewriter handler that throws or rejects after the first byte, a proxied upstream fetch body reset before and after its first chunk. `Bun.file()` on a missing path already reaches `error()` and answers 500 (unchanged). A user `Content-Length` header on a stream Response is ignored in favor of chunked framing, so it does not change the outcome. Related PRs in this area: #35229 deferred the status line until the first body byte so that `error()` can answer a pre-first-byte failure with a 500 (a larger change to `do_render_stream` and the sink), closed in favor of this PR; that design remains a possible follow-up. #38003 touches the same sites for the stored-ByteStream-error case. This PR only enforces the framing invariant; it does not decide whether `error()` should be reachable for these failures. HTTP/3 is not fixed by this change: `uws_h3_res_force_close` closes the QUIC stream with a FIN, which is a complete message in HTTP/3. That is tracked separately in #40598. </details> <!-- robobun:evidence:begin --> --- **no test proof** · iteration 5 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/js/bun/http/serve.test.ts <!-- robobun:evidence:end -->

I reviewed the latest push and found no new bugs; the fixture rewrite (text-mode reader, exact rejected boom check, no timed waits) and the tightened S3 assertion cover the earlier inline notes. Because this reworks ByteStream's buffer bookkeeping and changes what Bun.serve sends for a body that failed while idle (silent 200 to error()/500), a maintainer look is still worthwhile.

The diff reworks src/runtime/webcore/ByteStream.rs (buffer plus consumed index folded into a Buffered struct, stored producer errors surfaced from on_start/to_any_blob/on_pull), adjusts the Bun.serve response-render path in src/runtime/server/RequestContext.rs to route a stored error to end_chunk, and changes one HTMLRewriter pacing read; it adds subprocess fixtures and tests for the panic and the empty-body cases. No auth, crypto, or injection surface is touched. The bug hunt ran dry and the push since the last review addresses the earlier inline notes, but the change is a 240-line rewrite of a core native streaming primitive with manual pointer-lifetime handling and a user-visible behavior change, and a maintainer commented recently, so a human review is still appropriate rather than an automated approval.

I re-reviewed the latest two commits and found no new bugs; the earlier inline items are addressed at HEAD (the partial-read error fixture now drives the text-mode drain() route, compares the exact rejected boom outcome and paces with setImmediate turns instead of sleeps, and s3-write-to-file-sync-close.test.ts pins the rejection). Because this rewrites the native ByteStream buffer bookkeeping and adds a ref-adopting early return in the Bun.serve attach path, a human look is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
Buffered: every path that used to emptybuffernow goes throughtake/clear, both of which resetconsumed;copy_outonly advancesconsumedwithinbytes.len(), sotake()'sdrain(..consumed)cannot overrun;held_len()keeps the HTMLRewriter pacing on the whole Vec as before.- The removed
IntoArrayAndDonearm inon_pull: withis_empty()now excluding the taken prefix,to_write == 0is unreachable and the next pull returnsDone/the storedErr;fulfill_promisereplaces a deliveredErrwithTemporary, sohas_pending_error()cannot re-fire after a pending read consumed it. - RequestContext.rs:3290:
end_sink_with_pending_errorruns aftersink.setand theref_();end_chunkadopts that ref and, with headers deferred, routes torun_error_handler; the function returns immediately after, so nothisuse follows a possible free. A stored error and buffered bytes cannot coexist (append(Err)clears), sohas_body_bytesnever wins over the deferred branch. - Tests: the
Bun.inspect(res)polls are bounded (10 s, 1 ms) on an observable transition; the S3downloadmode's ordering heuristic only affects which route is exercised, not whether the read rejects.
Extended reasoning...
The change replaces ByteStream's separate buffer/offset fields with a Buffered struct whose take/clear/copy_out keep the consumed index consistent, makes a producer error stored while nothing was reading surface through on_start, to_any_blob and a new end_sink_with_pending_error, and adjusts the Bun.serve body-attach path in RequestContext.rs to route such a stream to error() instead of an empty 200; it touches no auth, crypto or injection surface. The two new commits address the fixture and test items raised in earlier runs, and the bug hunt ran dry with one minor ruled-out candidate. It is not approved outright because the diff is a 240-line refactor of native stream state plus a new early return after a ref is taken and a user-JS-running end_chunk, which the repository's review rules treat as the highest-scrutiny category.

A release canary (367d939) and a debug build of main bd599f5 end all four cleanly with 0 bytes, 3 of 3 runs each. A debug build of this branch rejects all four, 3 of 3 runs, with the error the same read gets when it is made at once:ECONNRESET,AbortError,S3Error ConnectionClosed,ECONNRESET.What stays open. For a stream source,
Bun.write(path, source)opens the destination withO_TRUNCbefore it reads the stream (pipe_readable_stream_to_blob,Blob.rs:1448). With a failed stream, or aResponseorRequestthat wraps one, the write now rejects, and a file that held 777 bytes holds 0. Main does the same for a bare stream, and resolved 0 for the wrappers. OnlyBun.write(path, res)with the fetchResponseitself keeps the old bytes. An S3 destination keeps the old object, because no request goes out. This PR does not change whenBun.writetruncates.Two behaviours change only in the state that used to abort:
on_startandresumehand over the bytes no consumer took, not the whole buffer, so a prefix a reader already holds is not sent twice. Theto_write == 0arm ofon_pullis gone: it handled a buffer whose bytes were all taken but not dropped, which cannot exist now.The

Counting only the untaken bytes madehtml-rewriter.test.js"a locked reader paces the input by its reads" fail, which is how the difference showed.Self-review. Two concerns survived: that the change may claim severity but not demand (so this body states that no user reported it and lists the routes), and that a rename in

"root range port" and "/bun:info to loopback" fail on the release build of main too (the container runs as root).bytestream-partial-read-error-fixture.tsstages the failure with anHTMLRewriterwhose handler throws on the second chunk, so every step runs on the JS thread in order. It waits for the handler to have run, checks that the first read is exactly one pull view, and requires the next read to reject with the handler's own error. A text-mode reader is required: a byte reader's full view retires the adapter's pending view, and the next pull then skipsdrain(). Against the released bun the fixture aborts with the panic in its header.s3-stream-stored-error-fixture.tshas two modes. With no credentials the download fails insidestream(), so every reader and sink runs against a stored failure and no timing is involved. For the failures on the wire, the stub closes the connection behind each answer. The read starts after the client has closed its end and one more request has made the round trip through the HTTP thread. The fixture writes to an absolute path:Bun.write("out.bin", new Response(""))with a relative path to a file that does not exist rejects withENOENTfromtruncate, on main too. That is a separate defect.Size.
