Problem

  • A fetch() body or a Bun.file() stream stays readable after a native consumer reads it: a fetch() request body, Bun.write(), a Bun.serve() response body, Bun.spawn() stdin, an S3 upload, or HTMLRewriter. isReadable(stream) returns true, Bun.inspect(stream) prints state: 'readable', and finished(stream) never settles.
  • These consumers attach to the ByteStream or FileReader source in Rust and lock the stream with ReadableStream__lockNative (WebStreamsExports.cpp). The stream has no reader and no controller. The source ends the wire with self.sink.set(SinkHandle::None) only, so nothing changes m_state.

Fix

  • ReadableStream__lockNative stores the stream in a new lockedStream slot of the source wrapper. ByteStream::detach_sink and FileReader::detach_sink replace each sink.set(SinkHandle::None). They call NewSource::end_locked_stream before sink.end().
  • The stream closes when the source delivers its last chunk. It errors with the failure of the producer. It also closes when the sink stops early (abort, write failure, peer gone): pipeTo() cancels its source in that case.
  • The FileReader returns in wire_native_sink that end before the lock (Start::Err, Start::OwnedAndDone) now lock the stream too.
  • Verified: test/js/node/stream/web-stream-state.test.ts (9 new tests fail on main). Also the fetch, serve, spawn stdin, Bun.write, HTMLRewriter and S3 stream suites.

Background

  • A native stream is a JSReadableStream whose m_nativePtr is a wrapper cell around a Rust NewSource (ByteStream or FileReader).
  • A JS reader makes a controller and an adapter, which closes the stream. A native consumer skips both. It installs a SinkHandle on the source, which calls sink.write() and sink.end().
  • m_lockedWithoutReader makes .locked true without a reader. A consumed body keeps its lock, so the flag stays set.
Notes

Reproduction: the upstream server must still send the body when the consumer attaches. If the whole body is already buffered, ReadableStream::to_any_blob lifts it and no sink is wired. That path has the same symptom and is fixed separately.

import { isReadable } from "node:stream";
import { finished } from "node:stream/promises";
const res = await fetch(slowUrl);
const body = res.body;
await Bun.write("/tmp/out", res);
isReadable(body); // true before, false after
await finished(body); // never settles before

Fail before: with src/ from main (b993710) and bun bd, the 9 new tests fail and the 2 existing tests pass. With this branch, all 11 pass.

State after each end of the wire:

event state
source delivers the last chunk closed
producer fails (on_data(Err), on_reader_error, stored read error, open failure) errored with that error
sink reports Done or a write error closed
sink closes early (cancel_from_sink, SourceHandle::close) closed
stream is cancelled from Rust (ReadableStream::done()) closed
sink detaches (unpipe_without_deref) closed

The error that the stream stores is the same object that the consumer rejects with for a ByteStream (StreamError::JSValue).

Bun__NativeStreamSource__endLockedStream calls readableStreamCloseIfPossible and webStreamControllerError. Both are no-ops for a stream that is not readable, so ReadableStream::error() and cancel_with_reason() followed by done() keep the first state.

The S3 upload in s3/client.rs and the Bun.serve() response in RequestContext.rs wire the sink without wire_native_sink. Both call lock_native, so both get the slot. The inline ends in s3/client.rs now go through detach_sink.

The new GC edge (wrapper to stream) exists only while a sink is wired. end_locked_stream clears it.

Why a new slot: the fix needs an edge from the source to its stream, and the only edge today goes the other way (m_nativePtr). closeAdapter cannot be shared: NewSource::on_close clears it and passes the value to a microtask that does uncheckedDowncast<JSNativeStreamSourceAdapter>, and FileReader::on_reader_done calls on_close while a back-pressured sink is still attached. pendingPromise roots the pull promise. owner and sinkOwner root the HTMLRewriterTransform cell. The slot exists on the Bytes and File wrappers only. A Blob source never gets a native sink.

Suites run on the debug build: test/js/web/fetch/{body,body-stream,body-clone,fetch.stream,fetch-backpressure,fetch-abort-stream-body,fetch-stream-cancel-leak,blob-write,fetch}.test.ts, test/js/web/streams/{streams,native-source-onclose-leak,readable-stream-terminal-barrier-release}, test/js/bun/http/{serve,bun-server,serve-stream-body-error,serve-body-leak}, test/js/bun/spawn/spawn-stdin-readable-stream.test.ts, test/js/bun/io/bun-write.test.js, test/js/workerd/html-rewriter.test.js, test/js/bun/s3/{s3-upload-stream-gc,s3-stream-cancel-leak,s3-stream-error-gc,s3-write-to-file-sync-close,s3-connection-close}. The new tests also pass with BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1. The S3 upload consumer was checked by hand against a local mock (closed after the fix, readable before).

…ce is done

A native consumer (fetch request body, Bun.write, Bun.serve response body,
Bun.spawn stdin, S3 upload, HTMLRewriter) attaches to a ByteStream or
FileReader directly and locks the stream without a reader. The stream has no
reader and no controller, so nothing moved it out of the readable state.

ReadableStream__lockNative now stores the stream on the source wrapper. When
the source drops its sink it closes the stream, or errors it with the failure
of the producer. The stream stays locked.

Status

  • Merged as f04caca.
  • Reproduced on 1.4.3-canary and on main (b993710, debug build). A fetch() body from a server that still sends data, piped into a fetch() request body, Bun.write(), a Bun.serve() response, Bun.spawn() stdin, an S3 upload or HTMLRewriter, stayed state: 'readable'. finished(stream) from node:stream/promises never settled.
  • Fail before: src/ from main with bun bd test test/js/node/stream/web-stream-state.test.ts gave 9 fail, 2 pass. With this branch: 11 pass.
  • Self-reviewed. With Close a body's stream when a consumer takes its payload without reading it #42516 on main, the payload paths checked (Bun.write(), fetch() upload, Bun.serve() proxy, 10 B to 8 MiB, buffered and streamed) all end closed. Three items are left for follow-ups, none in this diff:

FileReader-backed streams can report completion before native sinks finish processing their final bytes, allowing callers to observe success while writes are still pending. Both lifecycle paths should be fixed before merge.

346-356: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Propagate the inline sink error.

When buffered data reaches SinkHandle::FileSink, FileSink::write can return Writable::Err(err). The combined arm discards err, calls detach_sink(None), and returns EndedInline(None). This closes the locked stream, and FileSink::end_from_stream(None) receives no error. Split this arm from Writable::Done and return EndedInline(Some(StreamError::Error(err))).

@coderabbitai On the finding for wire_native_sink (Writable::Done | Writable::Err(_), outside the diff): I did not change that arm, and I will leave it as it is in this PR.

  • A write error belongs to the sink, not to the source. This PR closes the stream in that case on every path (on_data, resume, pull_into_sink, and this inline arm). pipeTo() does the same: it cancels the source when the destination fails, and a cancelled source is closed.
  • The consumer still reports the failure. FileSink::write records its own write error for Bun.write() (count_stream_bytes calls record_stream_error), so the promise rejects. FetchRequestBodySink::write and RewriterPipe::write never return Writable::Err. NetworkSink returns it for ENOMEM only.
  • To pass the error to EndedInline changes what each caller does with a failed first write. That is a separate change with its own tests.

For best results, initiate chat on the files or code changes.

@robobun Thanks for the detailed clarification. I agree that Writable::Err(_) is a sink failure, while this PR must close the source stream after detachment. The consumer retains responsibility for reporting the sink error.

Passing that error through EndedInline would change the failed-first-write contract. That change is outside this PR and needs separate tests. I am withdrawing the finding.

Learning: In Bun native stream handling, a `Writable::Err(_)` from `wire_native_sink` is a sink write error. The source `ReadableStream` must close when the sink detaches, while the consumer reports the sink error through its own mechanism. Passing this error to `EndedInline` changes failed-first-write behavior and requires a separate change with dedicated tests.

Jarred-Sumner pushed a commit that referenced this pull request Sep 12, 2026
…ng it (#42516)

### Problem
- `const body = res.body; await res.arrayBuffer()` (or `bytes()`,
`blob()`, `json()`, `formData()`) leaves `body` `readable` when a
string, `Blob`, typed array or file backs it. `isReadable(body)` returns
`true`, `Bun.inspect(body)` prints `state: 'readable'`, and `await
finished(body)` never settles. Node v26.3.0 and `text()` close the
stream.
- The cause is `ReadableStream::to_any_blob`
(`src/runtime/webcore/ReadableStream.rs:195`). It takes the payload out
of the native source and marks the stream disturbed and locked, but
never changes `m_state`. Since #42116 (not released) the stream stays
locked, so nothing can drain it either.
- `.body` read after the consume returns a stand-in stream that is
`readable` and not disturbed.

### Fix
- `to_any_blob` calls the new `ReadableStream__closeConsumedAsBody`: the
`markConsumedAsBody` flags, then a close.
- Correct because `to_any_blob` first rejects a disturbed or locked
stream. No reader or controller exists, so the close only sets the state
and settles the closed promise.
- `ReadableStream__used` makes the stand-in for a consumed body closed
and disturbed. The stand-in for a body still being read is unchanged.
- Verified: `test/js/web/fetch/body.test.ts` (99 new cases, 50 fail on
main), plus the suites in Notes. Self-reviewed: 3 changes asked, 3 made.

### Background
- Such a body gets a lazy native `ReadableStream`. It gets a controller
only when something reads it.
- Until then a consumer can take the whole payload back as a `Blob`. The
body methods, `clone()`, `Bun.serve`, `fetch()` uploads, `Bun.write` and
`Bun.spawn` stdin do so when the payload is in memory or is a file.
- #42416 made `isReadable()`, `isErrored()` and `isDisturbed()` read the
stream's own state. `finished()` waits on a closed promise that each
terminal transition settles.

<details><summary>Notes</summary>

**Origin.** A differential run against node v26.3.0 after #42416 found
this. No user reported it. On 1.4.2 the stream was also left `readable`,
but it was unlocked, so `body.getReader().read()` returned `done` and
closed it. #42116 keeps the stream locked (as undici and Chromium do),
which removed that way out. This PR should land before the next release.

**Repro.**

```js
import { isReadable, isDisturbed } from "node:stream";
import { finished } from "node:stream/promises";
const res = new Response("hello world");
const body = res.body;
await res.arrayBuffer();
console.log(isReadable(body), isDisturbed(body), body.locked, Bun.inspect(body));
await finished(body); // main: never settles
```

| | main b993710 | this PR | node v26.3.0 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `.body` then `arrayBuffer()` / `bytes()` / `blob()` / `json()` /
`formData()` | readable, `finished()` pending | closed | closed |
| `.body` then `text()` | closed | closed | closed |
| `new Response(blob.stream()).bytes()`, `Bun.file().stream()`, `new
Response(Bun.file()).body` | readable | closed | closed |
| `fetch()` response, `.body` taken, whole body arrived, then
`arrayBuffer()` | readable | closed | closed |
| `Bun.serve` sends it, `fetch()` uploads it, `Bun.write` writes it,
`Bun.spawn` stdin (payload in memory or a file) | readable | closed |
n/a |
| `await res.text(); res.body` (stand-in) | readable, not disturbed |
closed, disturbed | closed, disturbed |
| old `.body` after `clone()` | readable forever | closed at `clone()` |
readable until a branch is drained, then closed |
| JS-source stream | closed | closed | closed |

The error messages of `getReader()`, `cancel()`, `tee()`, `pipeTo()`,
`text()`, `Bun.readableStreamToText()` and `new Response(body)` on the
consumed stream are the same as before. `finished()` registered before
the consume settles too.

**Not in this PR.**
- A stream that a native sink attaches to while the payload still
arrives (`ReadableStream__lockNative`: a `fetch()` upload, `Bun.write`,
`Bun.spawn` stdin or `Bun.serve` response of a body that still streams).
It does not go through `to_any_blob`. #42477 fixes it. This PR should
land first. The conflict in `WebStreamsExports.cpp` is keep-both, and
both use `readableStreamCloseIfPossible` for the close.
- `Readable.fromWeb()` on a native stream (`m_transferred`): the web
stream stays `readable` after the node stream ends. It is the same on
1.4.2. The fix touches the code that #42281 changes, so it follows that
PR.
- The `node-fetch` and `undici` shims wrap `res.body` in a node
`Readable`. Since #42116, `res.body.resume()` or `destroy()` after a
body method emits `'error'` (the stream is locked). 1.4.2 emits `'end'`
/ `'close'`. This PR does not change that. It is tracked separately.
- `.body` read while `text()` is still pending returns a stand-in that
stays `readable` and locked. Nothing tells it how the read ends, so it
must not report closed. A new test pins this.
- `getReader().releaseLock()` marks a native stream disturbed: #33461.
`WritableStream` state: #42457.

**The stand-in for a consumed body** is also what `.body` returns once a
native consumer took a body that still streams (`Bun.write(path, res)`
sets the body to used at once). It reads closed from then on. Before,
`finished()` on it never settled.

**Self-review.** It asked for three changes. The stand-in for a body
still being read keeps its old state (`ReadableStream::in_use`). The
close goes through `readableStreamCloseIfPossible`, not a hand-written
state write. The commit message and this body name the excluded paths
and say that the native consumers take this path only when the payload
is in memory or is a file.

**Suites run** with the debug build and
`BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1`: `test/js/web/fetch/body.test.ts`

Fix conflicts + verify we really need this other WriteBarrier and that an existing one won't do?

Conflicts: merged main in f2b6a0e. The only conflict was with #42516 in WebStreamsExports.cpp, and both sides stay. The new tests, body.test.ts, streams.test.js, the spawn stdin, serve, Bun.write and HTMLRewriter suites pass on the merged branch.

WriteBarrier: I checked, and I think the new slot is needed. The fix needs an edge from the native source to its JSReadableStream. The only edge today goes the other way (m_nativePtr). The source is the only party that knows when the wire ends, and a stream that lockNative locked has no reader, controller or adapter that could carry the edge.

The four slots the wrapper has now:

  • closeAdapter is the closest in meaning, but it cannot be shared safely. NewSource::on_close reads it, clears it, and passes the value to Bun__NativeStreamSourceAdapter__onClose, whose microtask does uncheckedDowncast<JSNativeStreamSourceAdapter>. FileReader::on_reader_done calls on_close while a back-pressured sink is still attached (empty buffer, sink_paused). A stream in that slot is then cast to an adapter, and the slot is empty when the sink ends later. To share it, the slot handling of the JS reader path must move into C++ behind a type switch.
  • pendingPromise is a set-only root for the pull promise of the JS reader path.
  • owner and sinkOwner root the HTMLRewriterTransform cell on the producer side and on the sink side. A chained transform uses both on a wired stream.

Two ways with no new slot, and why I did not take them:

  • Ask the sink for the stream. Each consumer already roots it (FetchTasklet.request_body, the FileSink pipe cell, response_body_readable_stream_ref, the S3 readable_stream_ref, the rewriter's inputStream). This needs an accessor in five consumers plus the AnyRequestContext dispatch. It also depends on the teardown order of each consumer: the consumer must still hold the stream when the source detaches. A later reorder breaks the state with no crash.
  • A Strong in NewSource makes an untraced cycle (stream, wrapper, NewSource, stream) that leaks if a wire never ends. A Weak costs an allocation for each wire. The .classes.ts slot is traced, so the cycle is collectable.

Cost: one WriteBarrier<Unknown> on the Bytes and File wrappers. b4576fe removes it from the Blob wrapper, which never gets a native sink. lockNative writes it once when a sink attaches, and the source clears it when it drops the sink. Stream creation does not touch it.

376-386: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Delay locked-stream completion until the final sink write drains. In the Start::OwnedAndDone branch, end_locked_stream(None) closes the JS stream before sink.write. Because no SourceHandle is installed on this pre-wiring path, a backed-up FileSink or FetchRequestBodySink returns Writable::Pending rather than Writable::Backpressure; the branch discards that result, returns EndedInline, and the caller performs terminal handling while the transport can still drain. Route this result through the delayed sink lifecycle used by FileReader::pull_into_sink: deliver the final buffer, retain the source and sink until the pending drain or terminal callback completes, then call end_locked_stream(None).

Delay locked-stream completion until the final sink write drains

FileReader::on_reader_done calls detach_sink(None) before SinkHandle::write sends the final buffer. detach_sink ends the locked readable stream, while FileSink can return Writable::Backpressure for the same write and finish it only from a later drain callback. finished(stream) can therefore settle before the native sink processes the final bytes. Write the buffer first, keep the sink attached on Backpressure, and defer both detach_sink and sink.end(None) until the drain callback completes the write.

@coderabbitai On the two findings about the order of the close and the last write (both outside the diff):

  • A readable stream closes when its source has handed over the last chunk. It does not wait for the destination to flush. pipeTo() works the same way: the source is already closed when the shutdown step waits for the pending writes. In Node, 'end' on the readable comes before 'finish' on the writable. The promise of the consumer (Bun.write(), fetch(), proc.exited) reports the flush. So finished(stream) may settle before the sink has drained, and that is correct.
  • No bytes are lost. detach_sink clears the sink field of the source and sets the state of the JS stream. The write and the end() use the local copy of the SinkHandle, and the sink flushes what it buffered in end().
  • FileReader::on_reader_done cleared self.sink before the last write before this PR. I kept that order. pull_into_sink returns early when the field is empty, so a drain ack that arrives during that write cannot end the sink a second time. The ignored result of that write (let _ =) is also unchanged.
  • Start::OwnedAndDone: the next push writes the bytes first and then ends the stream, which is the order that on_data and write_chunk_to_sink use for the last chunk. The source has no sink installed on that path, so the order has no other effect.

Tip

For best results, initiate chat on the files or code changes.

@robobun Thanks for the detailed explanation. I agree with the ordering.

The source ReadableStream must close after it delivers its final chunk. It does not need to wait for the destination to flush. The consumer promise remains responsible for reporting sink completion or failure.

detach_sink keeps the local SinkHandle available for the final write and end(). Therefore, clearing self.sink does not discard buffered bytes.

The preserved FileReader::on_reader_done ordering also prevents a reentrant drain acknowledgement from ending the sink twice. Start::OwnedAndDone writes before it ends the stream, which is consistent with the other final-chunk paths.

I am withdrawing both findings.

Learning: In Bun native stream handling, a `ReadableStream` closes when its source delivers the final chunk. It does not wait for the native sink to flush. `detach_sink` can clear the source `sink` field and close the JavaScript stream because the local `SinkHandle` still performs the final write and `end()`. Consumer promises, such as `Bun.write()`, `fetch()`, and `proc.exited`, report sink flush completion or sink errors.

### Problem

- `Bun.serve()` sends a second `Response` around an already sent
`ReadableStream` as a `200` with an empty body. The `error` handler does
not run.
- A native sink consumer (`Bun.serve()`, a `fetch()` upload,
`Bun.write()`, `Bun.spawn()` stdin, S3, `HTMLRewriter`) pumps a
JS-backed stream in `BunStreamSource.cpp`. At the end `rsisFinally`
(`:853`) releases the reader and `directStreamOnClose` (`:662`) drops
the lock: `locked === false`. A `type: "direct"` stream, so every async
iterable body, is not disturbed either. `RequestContext.rs:3152` checks
the lock alone.
- Found by a comparison with node v26.3.0, not by a user report.

### Fix

- `rsisBegin` and `readDirectStream` call the new
`JSReadableStream::markConsumedAsBody()` once the pump holds the stream.
The stream stays locked after the pump lets go.
- Behaviour change: after such a consumer took a stream, `getReader()`,
`tee()`, `pipeTo()` and `cancel()` fail with a `TypeError`. Body mixin
methods (#42116) and natively wired sinks (#42477) already do this.
Neither is released.
- `pipeTo()`, async iteration and `Bun.readableStreamTo*()` do not reach
these pumps and still unlock.
- Verified: `web-stream-state.test.ts` (30 new tests fail on main),
`body.test.ts` (12), `serve-reused-response.test.ts` (2). Self-reviewed:
3 concerns, 2 addressed, 1 out of scope (Notes).

### Background

- A JSSink is a native sink (`HTTPResponseSink`, `FileSink`).
`JSSink::assign_to_stream` pumps a stream into it.
- `readStreamIntoSink` reads through a default reader.
`readDirectStream` gives the sink to the `pull()` of a direct stream.
- `m_consumedAsBody` (#42116) is a bit that `isReadableStreamLocked()`
includes and nothing clears. The fetch spec never releases the reader of
a body.

<details><summary>Notes</summary>

**The rule.** A consumer that takes a stream as a body keeps it locked:
the body mixin methods (#42116), `to_any_blob` lifts (#42516), natively
wired `ByteStream`/`FileReader` sinks (#42477), and now the two pumps. A
reader at the stream level releases its lock as the Streams spec says.
Checked on this branch: `pipeTo()`, `pipeThrough()`, `for await`,
`getReader()` + `releaseLock()`, `Bun.readableStreamToText()`,
`Bun.readableStreamToArrayBuffer()`, `stream.text()`, `stream.bytes()`,
`stream.json()`, `stream.blob()` all end with `locked === false`.

**Scope of the pumps.** `readStreamIntoSink` and `readDirectStream` have
one caller, `assignToStream`, which only
`JSSinkController__assignToStream` calls (Rust
`JSSink::assign_to_stream`: `HTTPResponseSink` and its TLS and HTTP/3
siblings, `FetchRequestBodySink`, `NetworkSink`, `FileSink`,
`RewriterPipe`).

**State on main.** The lock state after the hand-off depends on how the
pump ended. A clean end and a sink that closes early (client gone,
aborted upload, child exited) go through `rsisFinish` and release the
reader one microtask after the stream closes. A producer error goes
through `rsisAbrupt`, which orphans the reader, so that stream stays
locked. A direct stream is never disturbed.

**Repro (the user-visible part).**

```js
const stream = new ReadableStream({ start(c) { c.enqueue(new TextEncoder().encode("payload")); c.close(); } });
const responses = [new Response(stream), new Response(stream)];
await using server = Bun.serve({ port: 0, fetch: () => responses.shift(), error: e => new Response(e.code, { status: 500 }) });
for (let i = 0; i < 2; i++) { const r = await fetch(server.url); console.log(r.status, JSON.stringify(await r.text())); }
// main:   200 "payload", 200 ""
// branch: 200 "payload", 500 "ERR_STREAM_CANNOT_PIPE"   (Stream already used, please create a new one)
```

For a direct stream `new Response(stream)` per request shows the same on
main: `200 "hello"`, `200 ""`, `500`. On this branch the second `new
Response(stream)` throws `Body object should not be disturbed or
locked`.

**Other observable changes.** `request.bodyUsed` after `fetch(request)`
with an async iterable body is now `true` (was `false`, the stream was
not disturbed). `Bun.readableStreamToText(stream)` on a stream a sink
holds rejects with "ReadableStream has already been used" in place of
"ReadableStream is locked" (same `ERR_INVALID_STATE`).

**Bare streams.** `fetch(url, { body: stream })`, `Bun.write(path,
stream)` and `Bun.spawn({ stdin: stream })` keep a bare stream locked
too. Natively wired sources already do this for the same calls
(`ReadableStream__lockNative` never unlocks, see "errors a Bun.file()
stream whose file does not open" from #42477).

**node v26.3.0.** `fetch(url, { method: "POST", body: jsStream, duplex:
"half" })`: afterwards `locked === true` and `getReader()` throws. The
same after an upload that an `AbortSignal` stopped. The other five
consumers are Bun APIs with no Node counterpart.

**The mark comes after the reader acquisition.** A stream that another
reader already holds is not marked. `Bun.serve()`, `fetch()`,
`Bun.write()` and `HTMLRewriter` reject such a stream before the pump.
`Bun.spawn()` stdin checks only `is_disturbed` (`stdio.rs:388`, `:536`),
so a locked stream reaches the pump there.

**Out of scope (the concern not addressed).** `rsisFinally` calls
`clearStreamControllerSlots` also when the pump never got the lock.
`Bun.spawn({ stdin: stream })` with a stream the caller holds through
`getReader()` reaches that: the caller's `reader.read()` then never
settles. This is the same on main and on this branch. #41532 rejects a
locked stdin stream before the pump.

**Not covered here.**
- A handler that drains or partly reads a stream with its own reader,
releases it, and then returns it in a `Response` still gets a `200` with
the empty or remaining body. #36110 covers that gate.
- Handing the same Node `Readable` or generator object to a second
consumer makes a new stream each time.

**Changed tests.** Three tests in `bun-write.test.js` (from #42114) read
the terminal state through `stream.getReader().closed`. One test in
`streams.test.js` (from #33781) polled `ts.readable.locked` to wait for
the sink teardown. Both observed the unlock as a means, not as the
subject. They use `finished()` from `node:stream/promises` now. The
`streams.test.js` test still proves the teardown ran: `desiredSize`
reads `null` only after the controller slot is cleared, and reads `0`
for a stream that is only closed.

**Fail before.** With `src/` from main and `bun bd`:
`web-stream-state.test.ts` 30 of 46 fail, `body.test.ts` 12 of 778 fail,
`serve-reused-response.test.ts` 2 of 9 fail, and the three
`bun-write.test.js` tests fail on the new `locked` assertion. With this
branch all pass. On main only the `Bun.serve()` row of "the stdout of a
running child" fails: the other four consumers wire a pipe-backed
`FileReader` natively.

**Built-in JS.** I searched `src/js` for code that touches a stream
after a native sink took it. The only `stream.cancel()` on a web stream
is `ReadableFromWeb._destroy`, which #42573 handles for the body mixin
case.

**Earlier reports of the same class.** #7001 (fixed in #7861) and #6860.

**Suites run on the debug build.**

reader one microtask after the stream closes. A producer error goes
through `rsisAbrupt`, which orphans the reader, so that stream stays
locked. A direct stream is never disturbed.

**Repro (the user-visible part).**

```js
const stream = new ReadableStream({ start(c) { c.enqueue(new TextEncoder().encode("payload")); c.close(); } });
const responses = [new Response(stream), new Response(stream)];
await using server = Bun.serve({ port: 0, fetch: () => responses.shift(), error: e => new Response(e.code, { status: 500 }) });
for (let i = 0; i < 2; i++) { const r = await fetch(server.url); console.log(r.status, JSON.stringify(await r.text())); }
// main:   200 "payload", 200 ""
// branch: 200 "payload", 500 "ERR_STREAM_CANNOT_PIPE"   (Stream already used, please create a new one)
```

(`ReadableStream__lockNative` never unlocks, see "errors a Bun.file()
stream whose file does not open" from oven-sh#42477).

**node v26.3.0.** `fetch(url, { method: "POST", body: jsStream, duplex:
"half" })`: afterwards `locked === true` and `getReader()` throws. The
same after an upload that an `AbortSignal` stopped.

`Bun.spawn()` stdin checks only `is_disturbed` (`stdio.rs:388`, `:536`),
so a locked stream reaches the pump there.

**Out of scope (the concern not addressed).** `rsisFinally` calls
`clearStreamControllerSlots` also when the pump never got the lock.
`Bun.spawn({ stdin: stream })` with a stream the caller holds through
`getReader()` reaches that: the caller's `reader.read()` then never
settles. This is the same on main and on this branch. oven-sh#41532 rejects a
locked stdin stream before the pump.

**Not covered here.**
- A handler that drains or partly reads a stream with its own reader,
releases it, and then returns it in a `Response` still gets a `200` with
the empty or remaining body. oven-sh#36110 covers that gate.
- Handing the same Node `Readable` or generator object to a second
consumer makes a new stream each time.

**Changed tests.** Three tests in `bun-write.test.js` (from oven-sh#42114) read
the terminal state through `stream.getReader().closed`. One test in
`streams.test.js` (from oven-sh#33781) polled `ts.readable.locked` to wait for
the sink teardown.

The only `stream.cancel()` on a web stream
is `ReadableFromWeb._destroy`, which oven-sh#42573 handles for the body mixin
case.

**Earlier reports of the same class.** oven-sh#7001 (fixed in oven-sh#7861) and oven-sh#6860.

**Suites run on the debug build.**

The Bun.spawn() stdin cases pass on main, because they pin behaviour that
exists since #42477. This change is docs only, so it adds no test.
