feat(config): add forward_proxy block for HTTP listeners - #1477
Adds the config surface for CONNECT-based forward proxying (issue #781) — PR 1 of a stack; the tunnel runtime lands in #1479.
Behind the experimental forward-proxy cargo feature, off by default. Without it the forward_proxy key is rejected as unknown at config load. The server feature turns on experimental (startup warning), and the feature is in make check-features.
forward_proxy block on protocol: http listeners (ForwardProxyConfig, modeled on the ListenerTls raw-struct + custom Deserialize + validate() pattern):
enabled (default false — the block's presence alone is inert)
allow_destinations: host pattern + optional port entries, matched via praxis_tls::SniMatcher with WildcardMatch::Suffix (exact beats wildcard, case-insensitive, case-variant hosts merge their ports) — the same machinery as sni_router.
IP literals cannot be allowlisted: besides the SniMatcher IP check, a pattern whose last label starts with a digit (*.0.1, *.8, 10.0x1) is rejected, since a numeric suffix wildcard would otherwise suffix-match addresses like 10.0.0.1.
Validation (validate/forward_proxy.rs):
the block is rejected on protocol: tcp listeners;
no-open-relay rule: an enabled forward_proxy requires a non-empty allow_destinationsor an ip_acl/policy filter in the listener's referenced chains that runs for every request. A filter or chain with request conditions (e.g. methods: [GET]) does not count, since it may skip the CONNECT request. The pipeline build also rejects conditional security filters, but that check can be opted out of (skip_pipeline_checks.conditional_security), so this rule does not rely on it. failure_mode: open and a branch that skips past the filter are still caught by the pipeline checks (absent explicit insecure_options opt-outs).
listener validation re-checks the block's bounds (timeouts, ports, destination patterns), as it does for TLS, so a config built or changed in code is held to the same limits as one parsed from YAML.
Reload: a reload that changes a bound listener's forward_proxy block (including adding or removing it), or removes a listener that has one, is rejected, alongside the existing protocol and TCP-group rejections. The CONNECT runtime and the HttpServerOptions CONNECT gate are captured when the handler is bound, so a warn-only diagnostic would let a reload that disables the block and drops the ip_acl leave CONNECT open with no egress control. Changing insecure_options.allow_private_upstreams is rejected too while a bound listener has an enabled block: the CONNECT runtime captures it at bind time, as the TCP service does, and the existing check on it only ran when TCP listeners existed.
CHANGELOG [Unreleased] entry; docs/operating/build-features.md and the reload section of docs/operating/configuration.md.
Why
Issue #781 (forward-proxy spike) settled on a forward_proxy: block on HTTP listeners rather than a new ProtocolKind, because one proxy port must accept both plain requests and CONNECT tunnels. This PR lands the parse/validate surface so the runtime change (#1479) is small: destination parsing, bounds, and the no-open-relay guarantee all fail at config load instead of at the first CONNECT request. The feature gate keeps the nascent capability out of default builds until the stack is complete.
Stack / sequencing
This PR — config surface + validation + feature gate (inert until the runtime lands). Config only: it does not depend on a Pingora fork release.
forward_proxy.rs: 21 unit tests + doctests (defaults, bounds, unknown fields, port 0, IP-literal, numeric-suffix and malformed patterns, case-variant merging, exact/wildcard/any-port matching, round-trip).
validate/forward_proxy.rs: TCP rejection, no-open-relay accept/deny paths, ip_acl/policy satisfaction (with the feature), and key rejection without it.
reload.rs: 6 tests — disabling the block while dropping ip_acl, destination change, adding a block to a bound listener, removing a listener with a block, remove-then-re-add with a block, and an unchanged block still reloading. Each rejection test fails with the check short-circuited.
Core and server suites pass with the feature off and on; clippy across the make lint feature matrix and nightly fmt pass.
~520 added lines of production code (including doc comments), slightly over the 500-line guideline after the allow_private_upstreams reload guard, the listener-validation bounds check, and the conditional egress-control rule.
Added an experimental, opt-in forward_proxy configuration block for HTTP listeners, with destination allowlists and tunnel timeout settings. The feature is off by default.
Configuration validation rejects TCP listeners, missing egress controls, and invalid destination or timeout values. Reloads are rejected when the block changes on a bound listener, a listener with the block is removed, or allow_private_upstreams changes while an enabled block is bound.
CONNECT tunnel handling is not yet available; this release provides configuration support only.

Walkthrough
This change adds an experimental, opt-in forward_proxy listener configuration. It defines destination and timeout settings, validates HTTP-only use and egress controls, and rejects specified reload changes for bound listeners. CONNECT tunnel runtime support is not included.
Changes: Forward-proxy configuration and feature gate
Adds the opt-in feature and listener field. Defines destination rules, timeout defaults and bounds, rule merging, and suffix-wildcard matching. Adds configuration tests and updates listener initializers, feature checks, and documentation. The CONNECT runtime is not implemented.

Summary
Listener and egress-control validation crates/core/src/config/validate*
Rejects forward_proxy on TCP listeners. For enabled forward proxies, requires a non-empty destination list or an unconditional ip_acl or policy filter in a referenced chain. Adds validation tests.
Rejects reloads that change or remove a bound listener’s forward_proxy block, remove a listener that has the block, or change allow_private_upstreams while an enabled block is bound. Tests cover these restrictions and unchanged blocks.
praxis-proxy/praxis#637: Adds destination configuration controls, but runtime enforcement and the requested attack tests are not included.
praxis-proxy/praxis#782: Adds the forward-proxy configuration for CONNECT traffic, but does not implement TLS interception.
praxis-proxy/praxis#1447: Adds forward-proxy configuration, but does not expose downstream connection identity to filters.

Assert the edited filter's effect in the forward-proxy reload test.
unchanged_forward_proxy_reloads reloads an identical config. Its is_ok() check fails if a reload is rejected, but its pointer check only shows that a new pipeline was swapped in. Neither check shows that the new filter chain took effect. A swap that installs a pipeline with stale filters would still pass.
Add a test that keeps enabled: true and changes a filter, such as the static_response status. The forward_proxy_config helper hard-codes that status to 200, so the test needs a parameter or an inline config. Assert that the reload succeeds and that the reloaded listener's pipeline reflects the edited filter. Keep the pointer assertion.

Add a test for unknown keys in allow_destinations entries.
DestinationRule rejects unknown keys through #[serde(deny_unknown_fields)], but no test covers that rule. If the attribute is removed, a misspelled port such as prot: 443 is ignored. The entry then parses as portless, and a portless entry allows any port.

Config surface for CONNECT-based forward proxying (issue praxis-proxy#781),
modeled on the ListenerTls raw-struct + validate-on-deserialize
pattern, behind the experimental forward-proxy cargo feature (off by
default; without it the block is an unknown key):
- ForwardProxyConfig on Listener (protocol: http): enabled (default
false), idle_timeout_ms (default 5 min, bounded to 1 h), optional
max_duration_secs (bounded to 24 h), and allow_destinations rules
(host pattern + optional port). Destination matching reuses
SniMatcher with Suffix wildcards, merging ports across
case-variant hosts. Patterns whose last label starts with a digit
(*.0.1, 10.0x1) are rejected, so no pattern can suffix-match an
IP literal.
- Validation: the block is rejected on TCP listeners; an enabled
forward_proxy requires egress control (non-empty allow_destinations
or an ip_acl/policy filter in the listener's chains) so a listener
is never an open relay. A filter or chain with request conditions
does not count, since it may skip the CONNECT request; the pipeline's
conditional-security check can be opted out of, so this rule does
not rely on it. Listener validation also re-checks the
block's bounds, as it does for TLS, so a config built or changed in
code is held to the same limits as one parsed from YAML.
- Reload: a reload that changes a bound listener's forward_proxy
block, or removes a listener that has one, is rejected. The CONNECT
runtime is captured at startup, so a warning would let a reload that
disables the block and drops the ip_acl leave CONNECT open with no
egress control.
Changing insecure_options.allow_private_upstreams is rejected too
while a bound listener has an enabled block: the CONNECT runtime
captures it at bind time, as the TCP service does, and the existing
check on it only ran when TCP listeners existed.
The CONNECT tunnel runtime is a follow-up change; the block is inert
until it lands.
