Beyond the inline findings, I also checked two refactor-equivalence points and found them behavior-preserving: ResolveFileExtensions::init gating .node on target == Target::Bun matches the old Target::Bun match arm it replaced in from_api (not is_bun(), so BunMacro is unchanged), and the target-sensitive fields left out of TargetOptions (import_path_format, env.behavior, allow_runtime) were already inherited by the browser clone through for_worker before this change. The load_defines gate on user_defines_node_env() only affects the process.env.BUN_ENV default, since a user NODE_ENV define wins via get_or_put_value either way.
Extended reasoning...
The change reworks how a server build's HTML page gets its bundler options (src/bundler/options.rs, transpiler.rs, bundle_v2.rs, resolver.rs) plus the two callers of the development-condition append; no security-sensitive surface. Inline findings are posted separately, so this note only records what else was examined and ruled out.
… target A server build (`bun build --target=bun`, `Bun.build`, `--compile`) that imports an HTML file made the page's transpiler from a clone of the server's. Only the target, the main fields and the conditions were set again. The define table, the node polyfills, the package.json "browser" maps, builtins as externals and the externals of `--target=node` stayed at the server's values. `TargetOptions::init` now derives the options that the target decides. `BundleOptions::from_api` and the new `Transpiler::for_target` both use it. `for_target` also builds the define table for its target, and `Resolver::for_target` derives the resolver's cached flag. The page keeps the default conditions and main fields of the browser, as before. `--conditions` and `--main-fields` are for the server. Fixes #24077 Co-authored-by: Exerosis <exerosis@gmail.com>
…ternal paths A page script of a server build that imports `bun:*` or a Node.js builtin with no polyfill got an error that said to set the target. The build already has a target, and it is the target of the server. The error now says that the scripts of an HTML file are bundled for the browser. The page resolved the paths of `external` against the cwd a second time, when the bundler reached the HTML file. A `process.chdir()` in between made the page bundle a file that the server left external. The page now copies the paths that the server resolved. `Target::default_main_fields` has no caller left. Remove it and its table.
… a page define error The linker tested the target of the server for its two messages about a browser polyfill that lacks an export. For a file of a page it printed `No matching export`. It now tests the graph of the importing file. The errors of a page say why the file is a browser build and what to do: the file is loaded by an HTML file, so the import belongs in files that no HTML file loads. The define table of the page is built deeper in the stack than the table of the server. A deeply nested JSON value can fail to parse there. That was a panic. The messages now go to the log of the build, and the build fails. `load_defines` borrows NODE_ENV from the env loader. The copy was for a `&mut` loader that this change no longer has.

test/bundler/html-import-manifest.test.ts— nit: this test cannot fail for the behaviour it is named for: its regex at test/bundler/html-import-manifest.test.ts:572-574 accepts bothokand the "too deep" failure, so a page that silently builds a wrong define table, or the base branch's behaviour, still passes. Fix: make the assertion pin one outcome, for example by asserting on theStackOverflowerror only when the bisection found a depth that the plain build accepts and the page build rejects, and otherwiseskipwith the observed reason, so deleting theensure_client_transpilererror path breaks a test. Why this was flagged
The test at test/bundler/html-import-manifest.test.ts:539-578 bisects the deepest
--definedepth a build without a page accepts, then buildsserver.jswith it and assertsstdoutmatches/^(ok|JSON document is too deeply nested\nFailed to bundle an HTML file for the browser: StackOverflow)\n$/. Both alternatives pass, so the branch under test inensure_client_transpilerat src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:1966-1972 is never required to run. If the error logging at bundle_v2.rs:1966 were removed and the build returned an empty log, result.successwould be true and the test printsokand passes. The repository review rules require every assertion to be able to fail and a test that passes both ways is called worse than none. On the base branch this test does not exist.Verification: The assertion at test/bundler/html-import-manifest.test.ts:1278-1283 is
expect.stringMatching(/^(ok|JSON document is too deeply nested\nFailed to bundle an HTML file for the browser: StackOverflow)\n$/), so both the success and the failure outcome satisfy it. On the base branch the page never re-parses the define and printsok. Which branch is hit is a build/platform property.

…nning A page define error named no file and printed the name of an error variant. The message now names the HTML file, points at its import when there is one, and has a note with the cause and what to do. An HTML entry point whose page fails is skipped, as an entry point that does not resolve is. Before, `enqueue_entry_points_normal` returned early while the runtime parse task was on the pool. Out of memory in `for_target` is a crash again, as it was before. So an error from it is always a `define` value, with its messages in the log. The test for a value that is too deep for the page now expects one outcome: the two errors and the note.

src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs— pre-existing: an HTML entry point of atarget: "bun"build that a plugin's onResolve filter matches, or that comes from Bun.build'sfiles, is still bundled with the server's target, so its scripts keepimport path from "node:path"andprocess.browserisfalse. Only the disk-resolve branch at src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:3627-3642 switches to Target::Browser and calls ensure_client_transpiler. Fix: decide the page target once for every HTML entry (loader == Html, server-side build, no dev server) and apply it at every enqueue site, which covers the 3 sites listed. Same pattern at 3 sites (src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:3611, src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:5301, src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:5474).Why this was flagged
Bun.build({ entrypoints: ["./index.html"], target: "bun", plugins: [{ setup(b) { b.onResolve({ filter: /.*/ }, () => undefined) } }] }), or the same build withfiles: { "/index.html": ... }. In enqueue_entry_points_normal, enqueue_entry_point_on_resolve_plugin_if_needed at src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:3599-3605 returns true because plugins.has_any_matches matches the entry, so the loop continues before the HTML check at 3627-3642. The plugin's no-match reply lands in on_resolve at 5292-5308, which calls enqueue_entry_item withtarget = resolve.import_record.original_target, the server target. The file_map branch at 3608-3618 passesself.transpiler.options.targetthe same way. enqueue_entry_item (3246) stores that server target on the ParseTask, so the HTML and the<script src>it references are parsed and resolved for Bun: mark_builtins_as_external stays true,process.browserisfalse. ensure_client_transpiler is never called on these paths. The base branch behaves the same; the new testhtml-import/html-entry-point-of-a-server-buildcovers only the disk-resolve branch.Verification: pre-existing. Trigger: a
target: "bun"/"node"build with an HTML entry point and either a pluginonResolvefilter matches it or the entry comes from Bun.build'sfilesmap. Only the disk-resolve branch at src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:3627-3642 callsensure_client_transpiler; the plugin (3599-3605) and FileMap (3608-3618) branches pass the server target, so its<script>imports are transpiled with the server transpiler. The base branch fails the same way.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the from_api refactor against the old path: the .node extension lists were previously added only in the Target::Bun arm, which matches the new target == Target::Bun in ResolveFileExtensions::init; the !user_defines_node_env() guard in load_defines does not change the CLI --production case because build_command.rs:486 puts NODE_ENV in the env loader, which short-circuits first; and Resolver::init1 derives only care_about_browser_field from the target, so Resolver::for_target covers it. I also traced the three HTML-entry sites: each now calls ensure_client_transpiler and skips the entry on error before any Target::Browser request could reach the remaining panic fallback in transpiler_for_target (src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:257).
Extended reasoning...
The change reworks how the bundler derives the browser-side transpiler for HTML pages in a server build, touching options construction, define-table loading, resolver cloning via unsafe lifetime widening, and linker/resolve error hints, with no security-sensitive surface. It is large and the core paths carry unsafe code and a behavior change (pages now fail on bun:* and unpolyfilled builtins), so a human look remains worthwhile despite the extensive new tests; the items above were checked this run and not previously recorded.
|
About the review of aa2ce61: the deep-define test now runs 12 builds on the debug build where it ran 22 (0e0fe66). It doubles the depth until a build fails and then bisects, so it has no bound that depends on the platform. The thread has the numbers. CI on aa2ce61 (build 131226) has one red test, |

The pushes since my last pass address what I had raised inline (page-specific builtin hint, dead default_main_fields, externals copied from the server, drained pipes, the HTML path in the define error, Buffer.alloc, a smaller deep-define search), and this run found no bugs. Because the change reshapes how every target-derived BundleOptions field is produced and commits to re-parsing user defines for the page rather than copying the server's table, a human look is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
TargetOptions::initagainst the removedfrom_apitail: loaders, main fields, conditions (defaults, then node-addons, then user),.nodeextension order only forTarget::Bunwith no--extension-order, externals,out_extensions,polyfill_node_globals— same values in the same order.for_target/clone_with/Resolver::for_target: the page getsmark_builtins_as_external=false,care_about_browser_field=true, a fresh define table read from the server's env loader, anddevelopmentonly when!production;sync_resolver_optsre-projects afterpublic_pathis set.- The three
ensure_client_transpilersites: each failure logs once and skips the HTML file before the resolve queue is touched; the panic arm intranspiler_for_targetis only reachable after a successful ensure. - The deep-define test: both parses run on the bundle thread, so its exact boundary rests on the page path having a few more frames than
configure_bundler->configure_defines(about 16 nesting levels in the PR's own measurement); deterministic per binary, but a refactor of either call path, or a different inlining decision, could flip it.
Extended reasoning...
The diff (1188 insertions across 11 files) centralizes target-derived bundler options in a new TargetOptions struct, adds BundleOptions::for_target, Transpiler::for_target and Resolver::for_target, rebuilds the define table for the browser graph of a server build, changes load_defines to take an explicit log, and rewrites the builtin-import hints for pages; tests add 33 cases across API/CLI, bun/node, compile and bake. It touches no auth, crypto or injection surface, but it does run user define JSON through a second parse on the bundle thread and introduces a new user-facing failure mode that exists only because of stack depth. All prior inline findings were addressed by commits afe2325..0e0fe66 and the bug hunt ended on a dry streak with no findings, but the size, the unsafe lifetime-widening constructors, the chosen re-parse design (the PR lists a copy-the-table alternative), and a test whose exact outcome depends on relative stack layout are decisions a maintainer should weigh rather than an automated approve.

About the note on the deep-define test: the boundary is measured now, and the test no longer depends on the narrow one (04d1b2a).

report_unsupported_options names every field of BundleOptions, so that a new field does not compile until it is classified. The field says whether main_fields is the default list of the target. The resolver options that --aot uses read it through resolver_bundle_options_subset, like main_fields, so nothing is reported for it.

The error path of for_target dereferences log, and the SAFETY note there pointed to a doc that said nothing about log. The doc now states it: log outlives the returned Transpiler, and no reference to that Log is live during the call. The null check now runs before the first dereference. The call site says why the contract holds.
The error path of Transpiler::for_target dereferenced its raw `log` argument, and no documented contract covered that dereference. It now appends the messages with `from.log_mut()`, the accessor that the other writers of that log use. The function keeps the contract of for_worker and no other, and the call site keeps the comment it had. The one caller passes the log of `from` as `log`, so a build reports the same messages.
Main added src/runtime/cli/compile_command/configuration.rs with a copy of the block that this branch replaced in the build command and in Bun.build. That copy now calls BundleOptions::append_development_condition too, so one function decides the condition for every server graph and for the page.
…ptions Conflict in src/bundler/options.rs. Main (#47273) removed the `fs` parameter of `BundleOptions::from_api`, `init_external_modules` and `validate_path`. This branch had removed the last two already and moved the external-module setup of `from_api` into `TargetOptions::init`. - `init_external_modules` keeps this branch's `ExternalPaths` parameter. - `from_api` keeps its `TargetOptions::init` call and takes the working directory from `Fs::FileSystem::get()`, as main does.
…ptions Conflict in src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs. Main (#47291) made `BundleV2::arena` return `&'a Arena`, so `initialize_client_transpiler` takes the arena without `detach_lifetime_ref`. This branch had changed only the comments there. The merge takes main's line and keeps this branch's comment on what the arena holds.

It callsappend_development_conditionnow, as the build command andBun.builddo.Define table of the page.
for_targetbuilds it withload_defines, asconfigure_definesdoes for the server. One function decidesprocess.browserand bun'swindow. The cost: a value that is not a literal is parsed a second time.DefineData::parsenever frees the list storage of an array or object value, also on main. So aBun.buildwith a page leaks it twice: 370 KB to 731 KB per build for an array of 20,000 elements. The second parse runs deeper in the stack. InBun.build, a JSON value nested 1,757 to 1,773 levels deep parsed for the server and not for the page. That is a build error:JSON document is too deeply nested, thenCould not bundle "./client.html" for the browser: a "define" value did not parse for its scripts, with a note that says why and what to do. The bundler skips the HTML file and goes on, so every parse task finishes before the build fails. Out of memory there is a crash, as on main.load_definesreports to the log that its caller passes, andBundleOptions::log_mutis gone. No caller had the two logs differ.Transpiler::for_targetmoves the messages of a failed parse to the log of the transpiler it copies, withlog_mut(). It has nounsafedereference of its own.process.env.BUN_ENV. A userprocess.env.NODE_ENVdefine setsproductionafter the define table is built. A second table built from the same options then got another default.load_definesno longer readsproductionin that case. No existing caller changes: gdb showsproduction=falseat the first call andtrueat the second.Other designs

browserfield on the page. The package.json cache keeps only the main fields of the first resolver that reads a file. resolver: keep every main field of a package.json in the shared cache, select per resolver #46652 fixes that. It supersedes resolver: read every default main-field name when parsing package.json #35595 (Bun.build (with target browser) produces nodejs target if the dependency is imported in the same script that runs Bun.build #14253). Until then the page gets themainfile of such a package, as on main. What differs is what happens to the Node builtins of that file. Arequire("fs")there was a build error on main. It is an empty stub now, so that build passes with themainfile in the page. Arequire("child_process")is a build error in both. This PR deletes the deadTarget::default_main_fieldsand itsMAIN_FIELD_NAMEStable, so this PR and resolver: keep every main field of a package.json in the shared cache, select per resolver #46652 conflict insrc/ast/target.rsandsrc/bundler/options.rs. The second of the two to merge resolves that.Target::Bun. A server route getsimpl-browser.jsand thebrowsermain field of a package. Thebun test --changedscan does the same and misses the test behind a package.jsonbrowsermap. The fix there is to pass the target toTranspiler::init. That changes how bake resolves, so it is not in this PR: bake: build the server and SSR transpilers for bun #46702 does it for bake, and resolver: keep every main field of a package.json in the shared cache, select per resolver #46652 corrects the main fields of the--changedscan.--target=bun/--compilebundles the entry's client scripts for the bun target, folding esbuild'stypeof requireguard into a barerequire(ReferenceError in the browser) #45227, which adds one line ininitialize_client_transpilernext to a line this PR removes). Under--target=node, a page dependency that callsrequire()still starts withimport { createRequire } from "node:module". The linker and the CSS printer still use the server's target (css: print a stylesheet with the targets StyleSheet::minify recorded #39251 for CSS).files:or through anonResolveplugin is not a page on every path (bundler: bundle HTML entry points for the browser on every entry path of a server build #38594, bundler: resolvefilesimports through the shared steps (HTML import manifest, url assets) #38605, bundler: copy HTML url assets resolved through files: or an onResolve plugin #38635, bundler: resume the shared resolve pass for imports that went to onResolve plugins #45408).BundleOptions.loghas one reader left.Measurements (release builds of 1917b1a with and without this change, linux x64)

--conditionsand--main-fieldsreached the page (removed, and tests now pin that they do not), thenode-addonscondition left every--target=browserbuild (removed), the package.json cache change repeated #35595 (removed), the change to bake server graphs and to the--changedscan (removed), the title said more than the change does, and the body did not name what is left for #46272, #39245 and #35595. Round 2: the linker's polyfill messages tested the server's target (fixed), the page hint named no remedy (it does now), a page define error was a panic (now a build error), stale comments (fixed), missing tests for--extension-order, JSON defines, the other graphs' hints,main_fields_is_defaultand the standalone HTML of the CLI (added), and this body (thedevelopmentcondition, the wider set of failing builds, the define leak, the CLI standalone change).Suites:
