Fixes #21210, fixes #16025
Part of #21084

Problem

Fix

  • instantiate_define_member_chain ports esbuild's instantiateDefineExpr: the first part of a value is a symbol at the use site.
  • is_dot_define_match treats ?. like . and accepts a top-level this. e_index looks up defines like e_dot.
  • The --aot fold (src/sema/fold) follows the same rules.
  • Verified: bundler_define.test.ts (372 cases) and 51 of 52 --aot programs (Notes). Self-reviewed: 30 concerns raised, 24 addressed.

Background

  • No renamer gives a binding the name of an unbound symbol (compute_reserved_names_for_scope).
  • --aot (Compile TypeScript to machine code ahead of time: bun build --compile --aot #45631) decides defines and dropped calls a second time. Its tests compare it with plain --compile.
  • Considered every spelling for Bun's own defines too (default NODE_ENV, --compile target): --aot tests on main read process.env["NODE_ENV"] and process?.platform at run time. --target=bun|node keeps main's match.

Downsides

  • Behavior change: a?.b and a["b"] no longer avoid a define for a.b, nor a browser build's default process.env.NODE_ENV.
  • Cost: +23,808 text bytes. Each access: a["k"] +56 instructions, a[i] +20 (Notes).
  • New errors: a keyword that starts a key. With --aot: a this key, an import.meta value. There, a path value whose first name the file binds reads the global.
Notes

Open after the self-review

Three review passes read the diff: two before the merge of main, one on the changes after it. They raised 30 distinct concerns. 24 are fixed. 6 are open, and the first 4 need a maintainer:

  • Which spellings a define matches that Bun adds by itself in a server build. Bun adds process.env.NODE_ENV, process.env.BUN_ENV and process.browser when the build defines none, and --compile adds process.platform, process.arch and process.versions.bun for its target. On main, a build for bun or node replaces only the dotted spelling of these. This PR keeps that with a flag on the define (plain_path_only). The flag holds the behaviour of main. It is not a rule to build on, and the docs do not describe it. The reasons are tests of --aot on main. test/aot/built-in-one-environment-run-in-another.test.ts builds with NODE_ENV=production, runs with NODE_ENV=development, and its fixture (line 19) wants process.env["NODE_ENV"] to be the value of the run. test/aot/parallel/bundler/names-build-replaces-read-in-brackets.ts says the same for a build without NODE_ENV. Four programs of test/aot/parallel/process assign, delete or redefine process.platform, and then read process?.platform. There are two other answers for the NODE_ENV default. The first: it matches every spelling too. The second: read NODE_ENV at runtime in a server build that did not set it #46154, a maintainer's change that adds no default to a server build when NODE_ENV is not set (closed with "Can be reopened", like bundler: match defines through brackets and optional chains, and read an unset env var as undefined #45920, a maintainer's version of the matching). Each of the two changes what the first test expects. esbuild, Rolldown and Vite add the default for a browser build only. If the defaults are decided by target like that, the flag, is_plain_path, plain_path_defines and is_plain_path_only stay only for the three keys of --compile, or go away with a ruling on those.
  • The page of an HTML import in a server build is built with the server's define table, as on main. So its default NODE_ENV also replaces the dotted spelling only. bundler: derive the options of a server build's page from the browser target #46548 builds that table for the browser target.
  • One review pass said to split this PR: the value half (a define value is a symbol) now, and the key-matching half after the decision on the first point.
  • A call through an identifier key keeps the member chain as its callee, as on main: F() with --define F=a.b is a.b(), and a is the receiver. esbuild prints (0, a.b)(). With the esbuild form, --define $=document.querySelector stops working.
  • The key grammar is a subset of esbuild's ParseGlobalName: no blanks between the parts, and only the escapes \\, \" and \' in a quoted part. Another escape has its own error message.
  • No test runs a define through the dev server, --drop=import.meta, the macro or SSR target, or an invalid key on Bun.Transpiler (it does not check keys, as on main).

Found after the review passes, while the merge was tested:

  • --aot reads a path value from the global object. The transpiler resolves the first name of the value in the scope of the use site, so a binding of the file wins in a plain --compile. The two builds differ for an identifier value (--define NAME=target with const target in the file), and for a dotted value while another read keeps the binding. This PR does not change how --aot reads a value (lower_global_path, src/aot/lower/expression/global_path.rs), so main has that difference. With this PR a dotted value differs also when nothing else reads the binding: main printed the text holder.value, and tree shaking removed the unread const holder. The --aot side is reported as its own bug.
  • AOT: bun test --aot on large suites, module loading fixes, fuzzer fixes #47316, a draft for --aot, also edits src/aot/lower/member/reference.rs.

Fixed after the two passes:

  • 09d7dd6: a define that matches only on the revisit after a single-use value is inlined now counts the uses of its value. const e = process.env; return e.API with --define process.env.API=config.url --minify-syntax dropped the import of config.
  • 09d7dd6: a bare read of a --drop name stays. --drop=ASSERT deleted ASSERT;, which throws on main when ASSERT is not defined.
  • e601e78: a one-part value knows that the use site is a property access target. X.tag with --define X=lib on a CommonJS default import gave 1,429 bytes where the literal gives 60.
  • 3204af9: a define value is not read as a define key on the revisit. With minify.syntax, and in the runtime transpiler, --define a.b=a.b.c gave a.b.c.c where a single-use local was inlined, and --define CFG=o.url --define o.url=1 gave 1 there and o.url elsewhere. The parser keeps the addresses of the E::Dot nodes that a define value built, and is_dot_define_match skips them on the revisit. A chain that the inlining joins from written code (const e = process.env; e.NODE_ENV) still matches, as on main: without that fold a browser bundle keeps a read of process.
  • 3204af9: --drop passes through an index access only when it is the callee, or the receiver of .call or .apply. console[level].bind(console) stays, as on main. js_parser: make --drop turn <dropped>.method.bind(...) into () => {}, not undefined #45566 is the PR for the dot form console.log.bind(console).
  • 3204af9: NaN and Infinity as values are numbers, as in esbuild. cfg.limit = 10 with --define cfg.limit=Infinity was Infinity = 10.
  • 3204af9: an assignment through a value that is one identifier is recorded on that symbol. state.COUNTER = v with --define state.COUNTER=counter made a copy of the module binding counter read the binding, and obj.key = {} with --define obj.key=exports exported {}.
  • 3204af9: the key of an inlined environment variable whose name is not an identifier uses the quoted spelling. process.env["MY.VAR"] is the variable MY.VAR, and process.env.MY?.VAR is not.
  • 3204af9: a["k"] asks a filter that holds only the names from Define::insert. A name of the global table (log, keys) cost 518 instructions for each access and changed nothing. A non-ASCII index literal is compared with the non-ASCII key names without a copy. Define::insert runs the key grammar only for a key with [. The --define flag uses the two scans of main when no [ is before the separator.
  • 3204af9: tests read the bundle text without its // path comments, the JSX runtime case runs in a child process without NODE_ENV, and edgecase/NodeEnvOptionalChaining is no longer todo, as in bundler: match defines through brackets and optional chains, and read an unset env var as undefined #45920.
  • 9144346: the side-effect flags of a known global stay off an optional chain, so an unused Symbol?.for("x") stays, as the note above edgecase/NodeEnvOptionalChaining asked and as bundler: match defines through brackets and optional chains, and read an unset env var as undefined #45920 does. The docs and the --define help say that a value can be a property path, and that the bracket and ?. spellings are inlined. Tests cover the compound assignment forms, bun --define on a .ts file, and an assignment through a key to exports.
  • a8184b8: the dotted read of drop/KeepsBareRead can fail now.
  • 9ad6ec8: bundler_define.test.ts has the cases of esbuild's DefineThis and DefineOptionalChain.

Fixed after the third pass:

  • 3c0aa1a: the flag is only on a default that has a value. --drop=process.browser with --target=bun left process["browser"]() and process?.browser(), because the drop and the default are one entry of the define table.
  • 3c0aa1a: bundler_define.test.ts runs the defaults of a server target with --production, --env=inline, an explicit --define, --minify-syntax and Bun.build, and holds each against the browser target.
  • bfaf318: the docs do not say which spellings a default of a server build replaces.

What changes for a build that works on main, apart from the Downsides:

  • A dot or index key with an identifier or a member-chain value replaces an assignment target: a.b = 1 with --define a.b=c.d is c.d = 1, as in esbuild. Main left the assignment target of a dot key.
  • --drop=console removes console[x](...) with the side effects of x and of the arguments, as esbuild does.
  • An unquoted value with a keyword part (api.example.in) is a member chain, like each other dotted value. It was a string.
  • --env=inline and the prefix form also replace process.env["X"] and process.env?.X.
  • Bun.build({ compile, define }) takes a define of the user for process.platform, process.arch or process.versions.bun, as bun build --compile does. It took the value of the target.

The merges of main (e084c83) and --aot

Main landed bun build --compile --aot (#45631). It compiles from its own tree (src/sema, src/aot). Its fold (src/sema/fold) decides what a define replaces and which calls --drop removes, by the rules that the transpiler has on main. Its tests build a program with --compile --aot and with --compile, and compare what the two print. With only the transpiler changed, four of them fail.

The fold now follows the transpiler:

  • A define is found through ?. and through a name in brackets, also a name that is not ASCII (fold_path_link, FoldInputs::child). A define of a longer path is decided before the short circuit of an optional chain, because the visitor looks at the whole path first.
  • A key whose value is a path is stored to through a dotted key too: process.env.ALIAS = 1 with --define process.env.ALIAS=holder.x writes holder.x. lower_reference (src/aot/lower/member/reference.rs) takes that decision for every kind of target.
  • --drop reaches a call through brackets where they end the callee, or where the callee is their .call or .apply (DropReach, src/sema/fold/inputs.rs). An optional link is a step of a dropped path. With --minify-syntax a name in brackets is a dot first.
  • A define with plain_path_only keeps the rule of main in the fold too.
  • src/bundler/aot/defines.rs splits a key as Define::insert does (define_key_parts). NaN and Infinity alone are numbers.
  • --aot stops the build for a define that it cannot compile to the same program: a define or a drop of this, and a value that starts with this, import.meta or a member of null. The parser reads those where the defined name is written. The error is the existing TS100050: --aot does not support .... On main such a value was a string and such a key never matched.

CI on bfaf318 showed one more define that Bun adds by itself. bun build --compile puts process.platform, process.arch and process.versions.bun in front of the user's defines (CompileTarget::define_keys), so they matched every spelling like a define of the user. Four programs of test/aot/parallel/process (platform-assigned, platform-assigned-under-computed-name, platform-getter, platform-deleted) read process?.platform after a store, and compare the executable with bun run. 7c05f97 gives these three keys the flag in a --compile build, unless the input has the key a second time, which is then the user's. 1526ee5 makes CompileTarget::prepend_defines the one function that puts them in front of the user's defines, for bun build, the compile command and Bun.build. Bun.build wrote them into the map of the user's defines before, after the user's, so a define of the user for one of the three keys was lost there. define/CompileTargetDefinesReplaceDottedSpellingAlone in bundler_define.test.ts (with the CLI and with Bun.build) and define-a-name-of-the-compile-target.js hold both halves.

f696fc8: the hash of the define table that keys the runtime transpiler cache (hash_user_inputs) covers the keys that have the flag. A default of Bun and the same key and value from the user replace different spellings, so the two tables must not share a cache entry. bun run and bun test add none of the defaults, so a run of a file does not reach this today.

test/aot/transpiler-parity-cases.ts lists ts/EnumDefine now. The case is no longer todo, and --aot refuses it with TS2304: Cannot find name 'd': nothing declares the name that the build defines.

Tests of --aot that changed, each with an explicit --define or --drop: test/aot/build-flags.test.ts (a path that the program writes in brackets is replaced without --minify-syntax), define-not-through-optional-chain.js (now define-through-optional-chain.js), drop-a-function-and-a-path.ts, define-global-path.ts. New programs in test/aot/parallel/bundler: drop-through-brackets.ts, drop-a-name-that-the-build-defines.js, define-quoted-part-of-a-key.js, define-nan-and-infinity.cjs, define-bigint-and-reserved-words.js, define-that-aot-does-not-support.js, define-a-name-of-the-compile-target.js. The two tests named in the first open point are as on main, and pass.

test/aot/minifying-first-saves-no-code/known-today.ts: default/DefineOptionalChain and default/DefineOptionalChainLowered leave the list, because the written form is now as small as the minified one. default/DefineThis enters it with the new error.

Measurements after the merge. Release builds (linux-x64) of the merge base e084c83 and of f696fc8. • An access that no define names costs what it cost before the merge: a["k"] +56 for each access, a[i] +20.
  • o.log is +36 for each access. It was +20 before the merge. log and keys end keys of the table of known globals, so the match runs for each candidate, as on main.
  • A replaced process.env.NODE_ENV costs +67 for each access with --target=bun, and +47 with --target=browser.
  • A default of a server build that the flag holds to the dotted spelling pays for the match first: process.env["NODE_ENV"] +646 for each access, the ?. forms +320. Nothing is replaced there, as on main. In a browser build the same accesses are replaced, and the build runs fewer instructions.
  • The --aot build shows no change above the spread of its runs.

The text conflicts of the two merges: Define::with_pure_globals (main moved the table of pure globals into bun_js_parser), and value_for_define, which takes &'a DefineData as on main, so the detach_lifetime call is gone.

The renamer cases

Each build uses --define CFG=<g>.url. The output then runs with globalThis[<g>] = { url: "right" }. The count is the number of names <g> for which CFG reads something else.

input bun 1.4.3-canary (367d939) this branch
locals of a function, --minify, 54 one-character names 5: n o r t u 0
top-level variables, --minify, 54 one-character names 3: i o s 0
60 top-level variables, --minify, 9 common globals 1: _ 0
4,000 top-level variables, --minify, 9 common globals 7: _ d3 io ga fs os vm 0
60 locals in one function, --minify, 54 one-character names 53 0
Bun.Transpiler({ define, minify: { identifiers } }), locals and top-level 5 and 3 0
bun build --no-bundle --minify, locals and top-level 5 and 3 0
bunfig.toml [define], a deeper value <g>.b.c, a dotted key app.cfg 3 each 0
the same inputs without --minify, and with a bare <g> as the value 0 0

A plain bundle of two modules is also wrong before this change. esbuild 0.25.1 prints the same output as this branch (o2).

// a.js:     var o = { url: "module-a" }; export function touch() { return o; }
// b.js:     export function read() { return CFG; }
// entry.js: import { touch } from "./a.js"; import { read } from "./b.js";
//           console.log(JSON.stringify([read(), touch().url]));
// bun build entry.js --define CFG=o.url, run with globalThis.o = { url: "right" }
// before: ["module-a","module-a"]     after: ["right","module-a"]

An import that only the define value uses is dropped before this change, with and without --minify:

// set.mjs: export const config = { url: "the import" };
// e.mjs:   import { config } from "./set.mjs"; console.log(CFG);
// bun build e.mjs --define CFG=config.url
// before: console.log(config.url); (the import is gone, the global is read)
// after: the import stays and CFG reads it, as in esbuild

The tests give every one-character name to a define value in one build. So the result does not depend on which names the minifier hands out first. They run through Bun.build and through Bun.Transpiler, because the bundler (renameSymbolsInChunk.rs) and the printer (js_printer/lib.rs) each compute the reserved names on their own path.

The merge of main (179664e)

Main changed the code under this PR. The merge adapts the new code to it:

  • Define::insert feeds dots_filter, and e_index reads through dots_for.
  • A value that starts with this counts in this_expr_count. Without the count, a CommonJS export that reads this through a define is marked as a function that ignores this, and lib.read() becomes $read().
  • The head and the links of a chain pass is_property_access_target, and record_import_property_use gets the options of its link, like the JSX factory path. delete through a chain marks the import as used as a value.
  • is_dot_define_match keeps the loop from main.
  • Main keys the runtime transpiler cache on the define table (Key the runtime transpiler cache on the define table and --drop #40971). The same table now gives other output, so EXPECTED_VERSION is 44.
  • bake: options own their strings, in one set of types #44496 removed the drop loop of bake, so the debugger skip there is gone.

Three test cases build the same files two times, one time with a define and one time with the value written in the file, and compare the bundles. They cover this in a CommonJS export, a property of a default import, and delete. I did not build a variant without the merge lines to see them fail.

One spelling for each key

A review of this PR found that --define 'process.env["NODE_ENV"]="production"' printed "development". The bracket key and the default process.env.NODE_ENV were two entries of the raw define map, both parsed to the same parts, and the unordered map decided which one the define table kept. Two spellings of one key from the user had the same problem: the later one won in 70 of 128 pairs.

canonical_define_key (src/js_parser/lib.rs) gives the dotted spelling of a key. A part that is not an identifier keeps its brackets, with double quotes. defines_from_transform_options (src/bundler/options.rs) stores each key under that spelling. So a default for process.env.NODE_ENV, process.env.BUN_ENV or process.browser is added only when the key is absent, and the later of two spellings wins. configure_defines (src/bundler/transpiler.rs) uses the same spelling to see an explicit process.env.NODE_ENV, so a bracket key selects the JSX runtime like the dotted key. A key without [ costs one byte scan.

Commits after the merge

  • 4a7d756: one stored spelling for each key (the section above).
  • 1d799f3: a chain used as a call target or a template tag passes that use to its last link. READ() with --define READ=lib.read gave a lifted CommonJS method no receiver, where the literal lib.read() passes lib. The define match of e_dot and e_index is one out-of-line function, apply_dot_define, so the expression dispatcher does not carry its conditions.
  • 7a6fae8: the CLI splits --define key=value after a quoted ["..."] part of the key, so process.env["a:b"]=1 keeps its key.
  • 1bc6268: an index literal with non-ASCII text is UTF-16 in the parser. It now matches a key part with the same text.
  • aabcc15: is_same_node is a free function, so it is compiled once and not once for each parser variant.
  • 59e8065: only user and environment keys are scanned for non-ASCII text when the define table is built.
  • 8645a24: the docs say that an index that is an expression (a["b" + ""]) is not matched.
  • b99cb4e: Define.this holds the define for this, so a top-level this costs no hash lookup. A top-level this at the head of another value takes that define, as in esbuild: --define this=window --define C=this.foo gives window.foo for C (it was exports.foo). e_index probes the filter after the a["b"] to a.b rewrite of --minify-syntax, so that node is probed one time.
  • 59acca2: the start of instantiate_define_member_chain is a free function, split_define_value, so it is compiled once and not once for each parser variant.

I tried three other shapes of that test (a helper out of line, a cleared flag in the visitor input, a second dispatch). Each one made the identifier and dot rows slower, so the first shape stays.

Suites run on the debug build

At f696fc8, the head: bundler_define (372 cases) and cli/run/transpiler-cache (24): 0 fail. cargo test bun_bundler aot::defines: 13 pass.

At 1526ee5, on the debug build:

  • bundler_define (372 cases): 0 fail. At 7c05f97: bundler_drop (18), bundler_env (9), esbuild/ts (60): 0 fail. At 4779a2c: bundler_minify_symbol_for (9) and bundler_edgecase (198): 0 fail.
  • cargo test: bun_bundler aot::defines 12 pass. At 4779a2c: bun_sema fold::define_trie 20 pass, bun_sema_parser analysis_fold 41 pass.
  • 12 programs through test/aot/run-parallel.ts: 12 pass. They are the six platform-* programs of test/aot/parallel/process without a worker or types, and six define and drop programs of test/aot/parallel/bundler.
  • test/aot/build-flags.test.ts: 11 pass.
  • test/bundler/bun-build-compile.test.ts: 77 pass, 4 fail. The four are bytecode tests that pass their time limit on the debug build. Two of them ran again with a limit of 120 s, and pass.

At 7c05f97, not run again:

  • The 52 programs of test/aot/parallel/bundler: 51 pass. macro-result-folds fails on a debug build only. A debug build prints [macro] call pair when plain Bun runs a macro (src/js_parser_jsc/Macro.rs:976), and the compiled program ran its macros at the build. This PR does not change that program. The driver skips a build whose --revision has no -canary, so the local run counted the debug build as one.
  • The 35 programs of test/aot/parallel/process: 34 pass. child-handed-variables-that-are-no-strings.js fails on a debug build only: the child that it starts prints the debug log of its system calls.
  • test/aot/built-in-one-environment-run-in-another.test.ts: 2 pass. test/aot/transpiler-parity-8.test.ts: 1 pass. test/aot/only-errors-replacements-and-positions-ask-how-a-member-name-is-written.test.ts: 1 pass.

At 4779a2c, not run again: the 37 programs of test/aot/parallel/tree-shaking and 9 programs of other folders that read NODE_ENV or a define (46 pass), and test/aot/plain-english.test.ts (4 pass).

At 6b16d77, not run again: three tests of test/internal/source-lints need more than 5 s on the debug build. They pass with the release build.

At a8184b8, or at 9144346, which has the same files under src/:

  • bundler_define, bundler_drop, bundler_minify_symbol_for, bundler_env: 339 pass. bundler_define has 351 cases at 9ad6ec8, and all pass.
  • esbuild/default, esbuild/dce, bundler_edgecase, bundler_minify: 499 pass, 1 fail. The failure is default/TopLevelAwaitForbiddenRequireSourceMapCLI (40 process spawns). It needs more than the default 5 s on the debug build.
  • esbuild/extra, bundler_bun, bundler_splitting, bun-build-api, cli.test.ts with --timeout 120000: 585 pass, 1 fail. The failure is Bun.build can be called thousands of times, which has its own 180 s limit. It does not use a define.

At 3204af9:

  • esbuild/ts, transpiler/transpiler.test.js, bundler_cjs, bundler_cjs2esm, bundler_jsx, bundler_dynamic_import_dce, transpiler/macro-test, bunfig-errors, cli/run/transpiler-cache: 0 fail.

At b99cb4e, not run again: the define case of bake/dev-and-prod (2 pass) and the define case of cli/test/coverage.test.ts (1 pass).

On the merge base, 241 of the tests in the files that this PR changes fail.

Key matching and value parsing

Repros for key matching and value parsing, on this branch (bun build --no-bundle):

// --define a.b=c --define a.b.c=d --define 'process.env.NODE_ENV="production"'
console.log(a.b, a?.b, a?.b.c, a.b?.c, a?.["b"], a["b"], process?.env?.NODE_ENV, process.env["NODE_ENV"], process["env"]["NODE_ENV"], process["env"].NODE_ENV);
// -> console.log(c, c, d, d, c, c, "production", "production", "production", "production");

// --define A=import.meta --define B=import.meta.url --define C=this.foo --define F=a.if --define window.env=import.meta.env
console.log(A, B, C, F, window.env);
// -> console.log(import.meta, import.meta.url, exports.foo, a.if, import.meta.env);

// --define this=window --define FOO=123n --define 'process.env["SOME-VAR"]=3'
((g) => console.log(g))(this); console.log(FOO, process.env["SOME-VAR"], process.env['SOME-VAR']);
// -> ((g) => console.log(g))(window);
//    console.log(123n, 3, 3);

esbuild prints this.foo for the second repro because its transform API is pass-through for this. Bun's --no-bundle and Bun.Transpiler rewrite a top-level this like a bundle does, so the define value follows that rewrite. console.log(function () { return C }) prints this.foo on every surface. With --define this=window in the same command, C is window.foo in both tools. --define this=this.x ends in Bun, because the this of that define is the this of the file. esbuild 0.28.2 overflows its stack on that define.

Define.dots holds dotted keys by their last part. is_dot_define_match walks an E::Dot or E::Index chain from the tail against the key parts, down to an unbound identifier, import.meta, or this. parse_define_key (src/js_parser/lib.rs) parses a key like esbuild's ParseGlobalName: an identifier, this, or import.meta, then .name or ["quoted"] parts. DefineData::parse keyword-checks only the first part of a value and accepts BigInt literals. The ported esbuild test ts/EnumDefine passes and loses its todo. default/DefineThis and default/DefineOptionalChain pass too. They keep their todo, and their cases are in bundler_define.test.ts: this PR does not change test/bundler/esbuild/default.test.ts, because a run of that file on a debug build fails on default/TopLevelAwaitForbiddenRequireSourceMapCLI (#46028).

Other changes in the same pass:

  • --drop=console now drops console["log"](), console[method](), and console[pick()](). e_index passes the drop flag down to its target when the index access is the callee, or the receiver of .call or .apply. It hides the flag while the index is visited, so a call inside the index is not dropped instead.
  • --drop=debugger is no longer also registered as an identifier define. The key parser rejects keywords, and Define.drop_debugger already carries it.
  • e_import_meta checks valueless() before substituting, like the other visitors.
  • An unused Symbol?.for("x") stays, as on main. Symbol?.for matches the known global Symbol.for, but the side-effect flags of that entry are not copied onto an optional chain. bundler: match defines through brackets and optional chains, and read an unset env var as undefined #45920 has the same rule. esbuild removes the call with --minify-syntax.
  • An unused Symbol["for"]("x") is kept or removed like Symbol.for("x"): both stay without --minify-syntax and both go with it, on main and on this branch. A folded index (Symbol["f" + "or"]("x")) stays, as on main.
  • A non-ASCII index string literal (a["ключ"]) is UTF-16 in the parser. It matches a key part with the same text, and the compare makes no copy. The visitor looks at such a literal only when a user key has non-ASCII text.
  • A runtime import.meta define value sets has_import_meta, so the CommonJS wrapper receives the $Bun_import_meta parameter.
  • An assignment target takes the chain's last link as the target, like the literal. ns.member = 1 through a define reports Cannot assign to import "member".
  • An unused define use whose value is a member chain (FOO; with --define FOO=globalThis.config) is removed, as before this change and as esbuild does: instantiateDefineExpr marks the chain CanBeRemovedIfUnused.

Earlier robobun PRs that each covered one slice: #33062 (string index access), #38563 (assignment to a constant define), #38533 (symbol resolution for dotted values). Their tests pass on this branch and they are closed. #28693 stays open for its globalThis base case, which this PR does not carry, as in esbuild.

… this; parse define values as member chains

A define for `a.b` now replaces `a?.b`, `a["b"]`, and `a?.["b"]` as well
as `a.b`. `is_dot_define_match` no longer rejects optional chain links,
and the `e_index` visitor does the same define lookup as `e_dot`, so a
chain that ends in `["x"]` is replaced too. `this` can be a define key:
`value_for_this` consults the `this` identifier define before the
CommonJS/ESM substitution.

Define keys are parsed as member expressions (`parse_define_key`):
an identifier, `this`, or `import.meta`, followed by `.name` or
`["quoted"]` parts, so `process.env["SOME-VAR"]` is accepted. The key
error messages name the key and the bad part in the right order.

Define values written as member chains (`globalThis.foo`, `this.x`,
`import.meta.env`, `a.if`) build real expression nodes when substituted,
the same way esbuild's `instantiateDefineExpr` does: the first part
resolves to a symbol (or `this`, `import.meta`, `null`, `undefined`) and
later parts become property accesses. Before, the whole text was one
unbound symbol name, so `import.meta.env` became the string
"import.meta.env" (rejected as a chain because `import` is a keyword),
and a value that named a local was not renamed with it. Only the first
part is keyword-checked now. BigInt literals (`123n`, `0xffn`) are
accepted as values.

A constant define is no longer substituted into an assignment target:
`FOO = 1` with `--define FOO=123` printed `123 = 1`, because the
constant's text was fed to `find_symbol` as an identifier name.

`--drop=console` now also drops `console["log"]()` and
`console[method]()`.
…ntime transpiler cache version

A non-ASCII index string is stored as UTF-16, and comparing it would copy
it to UTF-8 on every visit. Define parts are ASCII in practice, so these
literals do not match, as before this change.

Defines now match through optional chains, so the global side-effect
table marks more property accesses as removable. Cached output from an
older version stays valid, the bump follows the precedent for define
table updates.

Status: main (e084c83) is merged into this branch and the conflicts are resolved. The head is f696fc8.

Reproduced on bun 1.4.3-canary (367d939):

  • bun build --minify --define CFG=i.url on a file with three top-level variables prints var i=1,o=2,s=3;i+=o+s;console.log(JSON.stringify([i.url,i]));. The local i takes the name of the global that the define reads.
  • In a plain bundle of two modules, a top-level o of one module captures --define CFG=o.url in the other module.
  • import { config } from "./set.mjs"; console.log(CFG); with --define CFG=config.url prints console.log(config.url);. The import is dropped.
  • A define for a.b leaves a?.b and a["b"], and FOO = 1 with --define FOO=123 prints 123 = 1.

All of these are correct on this branch. The cases are in test/bundler/bundler_define.test.ts: 372 cases pass on the debug build at f696fc8.

The merge of main brought bun build --compile --aot (#45631). It decides defines and dropped calls a second time, in src/sema/fold, and its tests compare it with a plain --compile or with bun run. With only the transpiler of this branch, four of those tests failed on the merged tree. The fold now follows the same rules. 51 of the 52 programs of test/aot/parallel/bundler pass on the debug build. The other one, macro-result-folds, needs a release build: a debug build prints a log line for each macro call.

A define that the user writes matches every spelling. A define that Bun adds by itself in a build for bun or node keeps the match of main: the default process.env.NODE_ENV, process.env.BUN_ENV and process.browser, and since 7c05f97 also process.platform, process.arch and process.versions.bun of a --compile target. Tests of --aot on main read these at run time through process.env["NODE_ENV"] and process?.platform. A define of the user for one of the --compile keys wins with bun build --compile and, since 1526ee5, with Bun.build({ compile }) too.

CI: build 135382 at f696fc8. 184 of the 188 jobs passed, and no test failed on a lane that ran. The test jobs for macOS expired in the queue three times before they got an agent: those for one architecture then passed, and the 4 jobs for the other one are scheduled again in the same build.

The description lists the points that need a maintainer. The first one is whether these defines of Bun keep that match.

Define substitutions can still change a delete operation such as delete a.b into delete 1, leaving the property undeleted. This is a bounded correctness risk that is mergeable only with explicit owner awareness and follow-up.

Explanation

The PR satisfies the core requirement in [#21210]. Non-assignable define values are not substituted into assignment targets, while assignable member-chain values remain valid assignment targets. The description and tests cover both read substitution and assignment behavior.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template with both required sections, 'What does this PR do?' and 'How did you verify your code works?'. The opening states the problems and the fix, and the verification section lists the test files and counts. The author also gives an extensive Notes section with downsides, open questions, measurements, and follow-up changes. Two gaps remain. The verification section does not say which platforms were tested, and the robobun evidence block reports that the platform-specific tests in bundler_define.test.ts and build-flags.test.ts did not run on the author's machine and defer to CI. The Notes section is very long and includes many commit-level details that a reviewer would need to read at length. Even so, the template's required content is present and the description is mostly complete.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The PR includes several changes not related to [#21210], including optional-chain and string-index matching, this and import.meta handling, BigInt value parsing, indexed --drop=console, debugger define registration, transpiler cache changes, and Symbol?.for minification behavior.

Resolution

Split unrelated changes into separate pull requests or link the additional issues and provide explicit scope justification for each change.

…names in the define link test

Symbol?.for matches the same known global as Symbol.for now, so the
minifier drops the unused call, as esbuild does.

The define link test names its local and import with long names so the
minifier cannot pick the same text for a generated name.

Each case has its own temporary directory, and the cases of one repro
share one memoized run. On the debug build the file takes 8 to 11 s
with `describe.concurrent`, and 16 to 19 s without it (three runs
each, interleaved).

…a bare read of a dropped name

After a single-use value is inlined, the statement is visited again with
`is_revisit_for_substitution` set, so that no use is counted twice. A
define that matches only then builds a new chain, and its uses were not
counted. With `--define process.env.API=config.url --minify-syntax`,
`const e = process.env; return e.API` became `config.url` and the import
of `config` was dropped. The flag is off while the chain is built.

A `--drop` name has no value. `DefineData::parse` marked it as removable
when unused, so `--drop=ASSERT` deleted a bare `ASSERT;` read that throws
on main when `ASSERT` is not defined. Only a value of `undefined` is
removable now, as on main.
… target

`X.tag` with `--define X=lib` built `lib` as if it were used as a value.
For the default import of a CommonJS module that keeps the whole module
wrapped: 1,429 bytes where the literal `lib.tag` gives 60.
`value_for_define` now takes the flag from the use site, for a one-part
value and for the last link of a chain.
… and keep more of main for index, drop and assignment

A review of the whole diff found these. Each has a test.

The revisit. With `minify.syntax`, and in the runtime transpiler, a local
that is used one time is inlined and the statement is visited again.
A define value is a real member chain now, so that second visit matched
it against the defines again: `--define a.b=a.b.c` gave `a.b.c.c`, and
`import.meta.env=process.env` made `import.meta.env.NODE_ENV` the
default `"development"` in some statements only. The parser now keeps
the addresses of the `E::Dot` nodes that a define value built, and
`is_dot_define_match` does not match them on the revisit. A chain that
the inlining joins from written code still matches, as on main.
`import.meta` and `this` are not matched a second time.

`--drop` through an index. `e_index` passed the drop flag to its target
for every use. `console[level].bind(console)` became `undefined`, where
main kept the line. The flag now passes only when the index access is
the callee, or the receiver of `.call` or `.apply`.

Values. `NaN` and `Infinity` are numbers, as in esbuild, so
`cfg.limit = 10` with `--define cfg.limit=Infinity` is not
`Infinity = 10`. An assignment through a value that is one identifier
is recorded on that symbol, so a copy of a module binding is not
replaced by the binding.

Environment names. The key of an inlined variable whose name is not an
identifier uses the quoted spelling, so `process.env["MY.VAR"]` is the
variable `MY.VAR` and `process.env.MY?.VAR` is not.

Cost. `a["k"]` asks a filter that holds only the names from
`Define::insert`. A name of the global table (`log`, `keys`) can change
nothing on an index access. A non-ASCII index literal is compared with
the non-ASCII key names without a copy. `Define::insert` runs the key
grammar only for a key with `[`. The `--define` flag uses the two scans
of main when no `[` is before the separator.

An escape in a quoted key part that is not supported has its own error.

Tests: the bundle text is read without its path comments, the JSX
runtime case runs in a child process without NODE_ENV, and
`edgecase/NodeEnvOptionalChaining` is no longer `todo`.

…al chain

`Symbol?.for` matches the known global `Symbol.for` now that a define
matches through `?.`. The side-effect flags of that entry made an unused
`Symbol?.for("a")` removable. It stays, as on main: the `?.` asks if
`Symbol` exists. A define with a value still replaces an optional chain.
`test/bundler/bundler_minify_symbol_for.test.ts` is the file of main
again.

Docs and the `--define` help text say that a value can be an identifier
or a property path, and that `process.env["FOO"]` and `process.env?.FOO`
are inlined like `process.env.FOO`.

Tests: the compound assignment forms, `bun --define` on a `.ts` file,
and an assignment through a key to `exports`.

`ASSERT;` threw first, so `logger.debug;` was never evaluated. The read
of the dotted name now runs a getter that prints.

…n bundler_define.test.ts

`default/DefineThis` and `default/DefineOptionalChain` pass on this
branch. They keep their `todo` flag, and this branch no longer changes
`test/bundler/esbuild/default.test.ts`: a run of that file on a debug
build fails on `default/TopLevelAwaitForbiddenRequireSourceMapCLI`,
which needs more than its 5 s limit there (#46028).

This PR also fixes #16025 (label: confirmed bug). That issue reports that --define does not replace process.env["LOREM"] unless --minify is on. I added fixes #16025 to the first line of the description.

I ran the repro of #16025 (bun build --define process.env.LOREM="'lorem'" index.ts) on a debug build of 9ad6ec8. This branch replaces the index read like the dot read:

// bun 1.4.3-canary (367d939d9)
if (true) {
  console.log("property access");
}
if (process.env["LOREM"] === "lorem") {
  console.log("index access");
}

// this branch
if (true) {
  console.log("property access");
}
if (true) {
  console.log("index access");
}

I also ran these reads with --target=browser. On this branch the define replaces each one without --minify-syntax. On 1.4.3-canary it replaces none of them:

  • process.env["NODE_ENV"] and process["env"]["NODE_ENV"]
  • FOO.bar["baz"] with --define FOO.bar.baz=1
  • import.meta.env["MODE"] and import.meta["env"]["MODE"] with --define 'import.meta.env.MODE="test"'

Conflicts:
- src/bundler/defines.rs: main moved the table of pure globals to
  Define::with_pure_globals in bun_js_parser. Define::this is a
  field of the derived Default there. The ASCII assertion of
  insert_global moves with the function.
- src/js_parser/p.rs: value_for_define and instantiate_define take
  &'a DefineData, as on main, so the detach_lifetime call goes.
…tted spelling

Bun adds process.env.NODE_ENV, process.env.BUN_ENV and process.browser
to the defines when the build gives none. A build for bun or node
runs where the real values are, and programs read them there with
process.env["NODE_ENV"] or process.env?.NODE_ENV. On main these
spellings are not replaced, and two tests of --aot say so for a
compiled executable.

A define that Bun adds by itself for a server target has the flag
plain_path_only. It replaces a path with a dot last and no optional
chain, which is what it replaced before. A key from --define, from
define:, from --drop or from env inlining, and every define of a
browser build, matches every spelling.

This holds the behaviour of main for a build that gives no define.
It does not decide whether a server build gets the default at all
(#46154).
The fold of --aot (src/sema/fold) decides defines and dropped calls
for compiled code. It has to agree with the transpiler, which a
build without --aot runs. The tests of --aot hold one against the
other.

- A define is found through an optional chain and through a name in
  brackets, also a name that is not ASCII. A define of a longer path
  comes before the short circuit of a chain.
- A path that stands for another path is stored to through a dotted
  key too. lower_reference takes the decision for every kind of
  target.
- A define with plain_path_only keeps the rule of main: a dot last
  and no optional chain.
- A dropped path reaches a call through brackets where they end the
  callee, or where the callee is their .call or .apply. An optional
  link is a step of a dropped path. DropReach holds how far a drop
  reaches.
- A key with a quoted part is split as Define::insert splits it.
  NaN and Infinity alone are numbers.
- --aot reports a define or a drop of this, and a value that starts
  with this, import.meta or a member of null: the parser reads those
  where the defined name is written.

The two DefineOptionalChain cases leave the list of cases that are
larger as written, and DefineThis enters it with the new error.
The paragraph on the defines that Bun adds by itself is gone. Which of
their spellings a server build replaces is not decided yet.

I reviewed the commits pushed since my last pass (the plain_path_only scoping of the auto-added NODE_ENV/BUN_ENV/process.browser defines on server targets, the matching --aot sema changes, and the docs) and found no bugs; since this is still a large parser and bundler behavior change with the open maintainer decisions the description lists, a human look remains worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • is_plain_path (src/js_parser/visit/visit_expr.rs) against main's is_dot_define_match: an intermediate ["env"] with a dot last was already replaced on main, so accepting it under plain_path_only preserves the old server-build behavior; the sema trie's ends_with_index/has_optional_link check mirrors the same rule.
  • DefineData::merge drops plain_path_only when a later env-inlined pair merges into the default, so --env=inline NODE_ENV matches every spelling as the commit message states; own_defaults only records keys no canonical user key supplied, and a --drop of the same key is skipped via the valueless check.
Extended reasoning...

Since the previous review the PR gained a new define flag (plain_path_only) threaded through src/bundler/options.rs, src/js_parser/lib.rs, the visitor, and the sema define trie, plus aot test fixtures and docs; it restricts only the bundler's self-added server-target defaults to the dotted spelling, addressing the earlier concern about baking "development" into server bundles that read process.env["NODE_ENV"]. The change touches no security-sensitive surface. The bug hunt ran dry with no findings and the new flag's merge, canonical-key, and sema-mirror paths check out, but the overall diff is about 2,800 lines of parser and define-matching logic with behavior changes and three items the author explicitly leaves to a maintainer, so approval without a human is not appropriate.

bun build --compile puts process.platform, process.arch and
process.versions.bun among the defines, for its target. Bun adds them
by itself, like the default NODE_ENV of a server build. A program
reads the real process through process?.platform or
process["platform"], and the tests of --aot for a process.platform
that is assigned, deleted or redefined hold the executable against
bun run.

A key of the compile target that the input has one time gets the flag
plain_path_only. A --define of the same key is the user's, and it
matches every spelling.

ts/EnumDefine is no longer todo, so the list of the cases that --aot
refuses has it: nothing declares the name that the build defines.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

…nt of the user's

CompileTarget::prepend_defines replaces the three copies of that
code: bun build, the compile command, and Bun.build. It records in
the transform options that it ran, and the define table reads that.

Bun.build wrote the defines of the target into the map of the user's
defines, after them. A define of the user for process.platform,
process.arch or process.versions.bun was lost there, also one whose
key has a quoted part. The user's define now comes later and wins, as
with bun build, and it matches every spelling.
Comment thread src/bundler/options.rs Resolved
…ng alone

The runtime transpiler cache is keyed on the keys and values of the
define table. A define that Bun adds by itself for a server target
and the same key and value from the user replace different
spellings, so the two tables must not share a cache entry. The hash
now has the keys with the flag plain_path_only as one more section.
