What does this PR do?

In progress. The lists below describe the branch as it is now. A few more fixes from the final round of verification are still coming, so a number in this description can lag a push behind.

Consolidates the open pull requests for node:net, node:tls, the TLS side of https.Server, Bun.connect, Bun.listen and usockets into one.

All 175 open PRs in that area were checked against Bun 1.4.4, which was main when the work started. For node:* behavior the same script ran on Node 26.12.1 first, and Node's answer decided. 39 PRs are included in part, 22 were already fixed, 8 are duplicates, 26 were skipped and 21 are left for a maintainer to decide. All the others are included whole, usually rewritten smaller. The lists are at the bottom.

After the ports, a second pass over the branch gave each rule one owner. A check that two layers made is now made once, in the layer that owns the data, and code that nothing calls any more is deleted with its tests. So the diff removes more than it adds: +7,732 -11,533 lines under src/ and packages/, a net 3,801 fewer than main. In the diff you'll find one write path and one handler table for net.Socket, one TLS state per connection that both TLS engines share (openssl.c for sockets, SSLWrapper for streams, proxy tunnels and Windows pipes), one reader of the CA flags and NODE_USE_SYSTEM_CA, and socket timeouts stored as the sweep tick at which they're due, without the two timer wheels.

Read these first

These are the changes most likely to be noticed by a program that works today.

Where the branch still differs from Node on purpose, because 1.4.4 programs rely on it or because matching Node would weaken a check:

  • destroy() followed by connect() works.
  • Without an 'error' listener, a reset after the peer's FIN closes quietly, and so does a reset of an allowHalfOpen socket.
  • When a send fails for good, what the peer had already sent is delivered before the error.
  • ca: [] means no ca, and a junk tls.DEFAULT_MIN_VERSION / DEFAULT_MAX_VERSION is ignored, so the built-in bounds apply.
  • tls.connect() derives SNI from the host and ignores an ALPNProtocols that is a string or an ArrayBuffer.
  • TLS sessions don't resume across setKeyCert() contexts.
  • One write above 2^31 - 1 bytes on TLS over a stream is sent whole.
  • An https socket whose handshake timed out is closed even if a 'clientError' listener leaves it open.
  • http.Server#listen(port) without a host falls back to 0.0.0.0.

All behavior changes

Programs that ran without an error on 1.4.4 and behave differently now.

Windows

node:https

  • 1.4.4 accepted and ignored SNICallback; a non-function now throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE. With an SNICallback the addContext() entries aren't consulted, as in Node. (node:https: thread SNICallback through to the TLS listener #36707)
  • req.socket.constructor.name is 'TLSSocket' (was 'Socket'), req.socket.isServer is true (was false), req.socket.alpnProtocol is false (was undefined). servername, authorized, authorizationError and alpnProtocol of an https req.socket are own properties set when the handshake ends, as in Node (they were getters). Bun's own sockets: on a TCP socket getSharedSigalgs() returns null (1.4.4: undefined) and getX509Certificate() / getPeerX509Certificate() exist, as the published types say (1.4.4: missing). On a closed TLS socket getPeerCertificate() returns null (1.4.4: undefined), and getPeerCertificate('x') / setMaxSendFragment('x') return null / false (1.4.4 threw). (node:https: make req.socket a tls.TLSSocket with getPeerCertificate() #37255)
  • An https server's listen() sockets: 1.4.4 silently closed a connection that hadn't finished its TLS handshake after about 12 s, whatever handshakeTimeout said. Now it's closed after handshakeTimeout (120 s by default, as in Node; up to 4 s late, never early), and the server emits 'clientError' if it has a listener, then 'tlsClientError', both with ERR_TLS_HANDSHAKE_TIMEOUT, in Node's order. Lower the option to keep a short limit. Unlike Node, the socket is closed even if a 'clientError' listener leaves it open. On a tls.Server, the program's own socket.setTimeout() firing before the handshake ends is only a 'timeout', as in Node (1.4.4 emitted 'tlsClientError' with that error first). emit('connection', socket) on an https.Server starts TLS on that socket, as in Node, so cleartext HTTP on it fails with ERR_SSL_HTTP_REQUEST. emit('secureConnection', socket) is the way to hand over a socket that's already decrypted, and it works now. (fix(node:https): wrap injected raw connections with TLS #42594)
  • 1.4.4 kept an https 'upgrade'/'connect' socket writable after the peer's FIN; now it ends unless allowHalfOpen: true, as in Node. server.allowHalfOpen is now an own property (true on http.Server, the option on https.Server), as in Node. (fix(http): honor HTTPS server half-open policy #42855)
  • 1.4.4 reported a bad key, cert, crl, passphrase or cipher list as an 'error' event after listen(); now https.createServer() (and http.createServer({key, cert})) throws, as in Node. 1.4.4 re-read key/cert/ca (and Bun.file contents) at every listen(); now only in the constructor. 1.4.4 ignored tls.DEFAULT_MIN_VERSION/MAX_VERSION and setDefaultCACertificates() for https servers. ca: '' failed at listen(), now listens like Node. http.createServer({passphrase: 5}) without key material threw, now ignores TLS-only options like Node. tls.createServer() no longer throws for falsy ciphers / clientCertEngine / sessionTimeout / ticketKeys / passphrase / pfx / servername, like Node. https.createServer() now validates like tls.createServer(): a non-number handshakeTimeout, ALPNCallback together with ALPNProtocols, a truthy ALPNCallback that isn't a function and secureOptions: -1 throw. A garbage ca throws from createServer() (1.4.4 failed at listen()), and a bad crl is ERR_CRYPTO_OPERATION_FAILED. ciphers: "" means the default ciphers, as in Node (1.4.4 refused TLS 1.2 clients). req.socket.ssl is an object on https (was undefined). (node:https: build the TLS context in createServer(), serve it from Bun.serve #45535, in part)
  • 1.4.4 emitted 'connection' when the handshake ended, also when it failed; now at accept, once. socket.parser and server.timeout are set at 'secureConnection'. A peer over maxConnections or on the blockList is closed before its handshake (a client sees ECONNRESET instead of a completed handshake). closeAllConnections() and the headersTimeout sweep skip a connection still in its handshake, as in Node. An mTLS server emits 'connection' for a client it then refuses. A peer that resets the connection in the middle of its handshake reaches 'clientError' (ECONNRESET, socket already destroyed). 1.4.4 emitted nothing for either. Node also emits 'tlsClientError' there. (node:https: emit 'connection' at TCP accept, before the TLS handshake #46167)

node:tls and TLS

  • 1.4.4 reset a TLS connection of Bun.listen, Bun.connect, Bun.serve, node:tls or node:https that was still open when its thread ended (a Worker that ends or is terminated). Now the peer gets a FIN and no close_notify, as when a process exits and as in Node. A peer that watches the raw TCP connection sees 'end' instead of ECONNRESET. listener.stop(true) and server.stop(true) reset the connection as before.
  • A TLS connection of Bun.listen, Bun.connect, Bun.serve, node:tls or node:https sends a close_notify only at the end of a complete stream. One that is closed with data still unsent, or with a response that isn't finished, ends without it, so a client such as curl reports a cut connection there.
  • Bun.serve / Bun.listen servers with the same tls options share a TLS context, so a session from one resumes on another. Each has its own ALPN, server names and client-certificate policy. A server whose options name files doesn't share: it builds its own context. node:tls and node:https servers don't share contexts. tls.createSecureContext() and server.addContext() read their options object the way Node does. A servername or secureOptions of the wrong type given to them, to tls.connect() or to new TLSSocket() throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE with Node's message (1.4.4: an uncoded TypeError). An ALPNProtocols that isn't a list (a number, true, an object, a string) is ignored by createSecureContext(), addContext(), tls.createServer() and https.createServer(), as in Node (1.4.4 threw). tls.connect() and new TLSSocket() still throw for what threw on 1.4.4, with Node's message.
  • 1.4.4 threw Not implented in Bun yet from getTicketKeys()/setTicketKeys() and ignored ticketKeys. setTicketKeys() with a wrong length now throws ERR_INTERNAL_ASSERTION as Node does. (node:tls: implement the server ticketKeys option and getTicketKeys/setTicketKeys #28691)
  • getEphemeralKeyInfo() on a default TLS 1.3 connection: 1.4.4 returned { type: undefined, name: undefined, size: undefined }, now type and name are set. (tls: add groups option, default to PQ-friendly hybrid #29602, in part)
  • 1.4.4 ignored a replaced tls.createSecureContext; now tls.connect() calls it whenever no secureContext option is given. 1.4.4 accepted any minDHSize; now an own minDHSize that isn't a number throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE (an explicit undefined too) and one below 1 or NaN throws ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE, as on Node. (tls: minDHSize validation, replaceable createSecureContext, ECANCELED on cancelled TLS writes (+5 tests) #35386, in part)
  • 1.4.4 rejected every leaf with an IP SAN under a CA with an iPAddress constraint. Now the ones inside the constraint are accepted, exactly as Node 26 accepts them. (tls: support IPv4 and IPv6 CA name constraints #42254)
  • All on a server with an ALPNCallback or a setKeyCert() call. (1) 1.4.4's setKeyCert() swapped the connection's whole SSL_CTX, so the context's ciphers and sigalgs applied and the server's SNICallback / ALPN handling was lost; now only certificate, key, chain and CAs change, as in Node. (2) A context without a certificate: 1.4.4 accepted it silently, now it throws SetKeyCert as Node does. (3) On TLS 1.3 ALPNCallback now runs before SNICallback (1.4.4: after), and an ALPNCallback that refuses means SNICallback isn't called, as in Node. (4) ALPNCallback runs before BoringSSL picks the cipher: this.getCipher() and getSession() have nothing to report on TLS 1.2 (as in Node), this.getProtocol() inside ALPNCallback says 'TLSv1.2' on a TLS 1.3 handshake (1.4.4 and Node: 'TLSv1.3'), and on TLS 1.2 the callback also runs for a ClientHello that then fails with no shared cipher. (5) A TLS 1.2 session resumes only under the setKeyCert() context it was made under. (6) A lone leaf isn't completed from the setKeyCert() context's own ca any more, only from the server's, as in Node. (7) setKeyCert() on a node:tls client does nothing, as in Node (1.4.4 switched the client's certificate and CAs; Bun.connect sockets keep that). (8) A context made from a pfx sends the bundle's other certificates as its chain, in the bundle's order, as Node does (1.4.4 built the chain from the store at handshake time). (node:tls: run ALPNCallback before BoringSSL picks the certificate and the session #43216)
  • ERR_SOCKET_CLOSED is replaced by Node's errors: 'end', 'error' ECONNRESET and the write callback ECANCELED for a connection that ends mid-handshake, read ECONNRESET for a reset with a write in flight. Client and accepted sockets follow one rule. Every read error has Node's message (read ETIMEDOUT, not Bun's native text). (node:net: keep 'end' off a destroyed socket and report the read error behind a write in flight #43392, in part)
  • A TLS write stays pending until the kernel has every record. If the kernel rejects them, the write callback and 'error' get the send's own error with syscall 'write' (write EPIPE), as in Node, after the data and the 'end' of the peer, then 'close' with hadError true. A reset is reported as read ECONNRESET, with the write callback canceled (ECANCELED). A socket that isn't reading closes with the error as well. (node:tls: complete write(cb) and end(cb) over a Duplex when the stream completes the ciphertext #43877, in part)
  • 1.4.4: one write above 2^31 - 1 bytes on a TLS socket over a stream completed if the stream later emitted 'drain', and hung otherwise. Now it always completes. Node fails it with EPROTO. (tls: remove the 'drain' listener on a wrapped stream #44394)
  • 1.4.4: client socket.servername was '' or null when no SNI was sent, now false. servername: null with a DNS host sent the resolved IP as SNI, now sends the host name (fix(tls): omit implicit SNI for absent and null servernames #45260, in part)
  • 1.4.4 served the default certificate over a Duplex and never called SNICallback, now the selected one. 1.4.4 dropped the connection for cb(null, false) (also 0, a number, a string), now the default context. 'Invalid SNI context' is a TypeError now, like Node. A server-side TLSSocket created with a servername option reports the client's SNI name in socket.servername, not the option. Windows: a tls.Server on a named pipe served the default certificate for every name, now the one SNICallback or addContext() selects. Windows: Bun.connect({ unix: <named pipe>, tls }) with TLS options that can't build a context (say, a cert that isn't PEM) throws from the call (ERR_OSSL_PEM_NO_START_LINE), as over TCP or a unix path (1.4.4 called connectError and rejected the promise). TLS over a stream, through a fetch or WebSocket proxy tunnel and over a Windows named pipe follows the clientRenegotiationLimit / clientRenegotiationWindow of its tls options (1.4.4 used fixed numbers). Windows: a TLS listener on a named pipe uses the tls.secureContext it's given and applies its TLS options to the sockets it accepts, like a socket listener. A connectError handler that throws during a named pipe's synchronous connect failure throws from Bun.connect(), as for sockets (it was reported as uncaught). (node:tls: ask for the server name on the stream TLS engine #45471)
  • 1.4.4 called SNICallback with this === the server, now this is the TLSSocket (the server is this.server) (node:tls: call SNICallback with the connection's TLSSocket as this on a listening server #46099)
  • A Bun.connect TLS socket that writes in open and whose peer resets right at accept: 1.4.4 reported handshake(false, null), now handshake(false, ECONNRESET). (tls: a handshake send that the kernel refuses is a reset, not the owner's FIN #46152, in part)
  • 1.4.4 ignored a first argument that isn't a stream in new tls.TLSSocket(value, options); now it throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE (Node throws a TypeError too). A server that emits its accepted TLSSocket to itself again now starts TLS inside it; 1.4.4 ignored the event (node:tls: wrap the streams and sockets that Node wraps #46233)
  • After a program calls tls.setDefaultCACertificates(list): 1.4.4's fetch / WebSocket / Bun.connect / Bun.SQL kept trusting the built-in store, now they trust list only. setDefaultCACertificates([]) on 1.4.4 left node:tls on the default store when SSL_CERT_FILE trusted the peer, now nothing is trusted. bun test --isolate: a list or a tls.DEFAULT_CIPHERS assigned in one test file no longer reaches the next file. ca: [] means no ca for every client, so after setDefaultCACertificates(list) it verifies against list. 1.4.4 fell back to the built-in store there (Node trusts nothing). fetch.preconnect(url) dials with the list (and with tls.DEFAULT_CIPHERS), and the fetch(url) after it reuses that connection. 1.4.4 didn't open one once DEFAULT_CIPHERS was assigned. (tls: make fetch and WebSocket honour setDefaultCACertificates #46237)
  • A tls.Server (and now https.Server) with both an SNICallback and addContext() entries: for a name the callback declines, 1.4.4 served the entry's certificate and used the entry's client CA, now the default context's. Servers with addContext() and no SNICallback don't change. (node:tls: a user SNICallback replaces the addContext() entries on a listening server #46296)
  • NODE_USE_SYSTEM_CA has one reader: assigned at run time or in .env it changes neither getCACertificates('default') nor the store (1.4.4 and main list the system roots and don't trust them), and =true works with --use-bundled-ca and in a compiled executable, as it does without a flag. (fix(tls): honor --use-openssl-ca trust-store selection #46302)

node:quic

  • 1.4.4 rejected a peer whose issuer is only in the bundled roots or in NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS; now it's trusted, also for client certificates on a server with verifyClient and no ca. SSL_CERT_FILE is read once per process as for fetch and node:tls, no longer on every context. After tls.setDefaultCACertificates(list), a node:quic context without ca trusts list only (an empty list trusts nothing). (node:quic: verify against the default CA store when no ca is given #43089)

Bun.connect and Bun.listen

  • close(socket, error) gets an ECANCELED error when the connection is closed before the data passed to end(data) has all been sent, for example by listener.stop(true). 1.4.4 passed no error.
  • socket.upgradeTLS() throws while the data passed to end(data) is still being sent. 1.4.4 upgraded the socket and dropped that data.
  • Only the code and errno of a connect that already failed: 1.4.4 said ECONNREFUSED for everything outside a list of 12 codes, now the real code (EPERM from a firewall or a sandbox, ENOBUFS, EMFILE, ENOMEM, EBADF, ENOSPC when epoll_ctl(ADD) fails, ...). A program that retries only on code === 'ECONNREFUSED' stops retrying on those. (net: report the real connect errno instead of fabricated ECONNRESET/ECONNREFUSED #37093)
  • end(data) returns the chunk's byte length (1.4.4: what one send took). write() and end(data) return -1 once end(data) or close() was called. If the queued data can't be sent, close(socket, error) gets the error with syscall: "write", on TCP, unix and TLS, with or without an error handler (1.4.4 closed silently): EPIPE, ECONNRESET, or ETIMEDOUT after the socket's own timeout (socket.timeout(seconds), 120 s by default on a socket that Bun.listen accepted, none on Bun.connect). The error handler isn't called for it. The queued data is still sent after the peer's FIN, so the close can come as late as that timeout (1.4.4 closed at the FIN). end(data) made inside the timeout handler closes right away, without an error. An end(data) whose first send fails returns -1 and closes with the error. A paused socket closes with the error too. A TLS close waits at most 10 s for records that write() already counted, and terminate() ends that wait (1.4.4 ignored it after end() or close()). A TLS drain(socket) handler gets one argument and isn't called after a failed send. Also: over TLS, end(data) called from open is delivered after the handshake and returns the length (1.4.4 returned 0 and dropped it). bytesWritten right after end(big) counts the queued bytes. flush() or a second end() after a partial end(data) retries the send, where 1.4.4 closed right away and dropped the rest. When both sides call end(big) over TCP, the side that finishes first closes with unread input, so the other can see close(ECONNRESET) (1.4.4 cut both directions short with a clean close). After a send() that reports more bytes than it was given (a macOS kernel bug), the socket reads what the peer sent until its FIN before it closes, with ECONNRESET as before. (Bun.listen / Bun.connect: send the whole end(data) chunk before the socket closes #41785, in part)
  • 1.4.4 delivered up to one more read (512 KB) to data() after a pause() made in drain(); now those bytes wait for resume(). If the socket is closed before resume(), they stay unread and Linux closes with RST, like every other paused socket with unread input. (usockets: do not read in the dispatch whose writable handler paused the socket #43725)
  • 1.4.4: net.Socket#bytesWritten dropped the queued bytes when a send failed with ECONNRESET/EPIPE. Now it reports every byte handed to write(), as Node does. (socket: shutdown() sends the FIN after queued bytes; a close frees the queue and keeps bytesWritten #44300, in part)
  • A unix socket peer that accepts and closes without sending anything: 1.4.4 reported a failed connect (connectError / 'error' ECONNRESET), now it's an open followed by end and close, as over TCP and in Node. Bun.SQL over a socket file then reports ERR_CONNECTION_FAILED after connectionTimeout instead of ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED right away, which is what 1.4.4 already does for the same peer over TCP. macOS and FreeBSD: a unix socket whose peer closed both directions closes without an error, as on Linux (1.4.4: ECONNRESET). One TCP case changes with it: after the peer's FIN, a reset whose error a failed send() already reported closes with no second error. (usockets: keep connect()'s answer; a peer's early close is not a failed connect #44452)
  • 1.4.4: Bun.connect() with a tls object that sets no option (also { unknownKey: 1 } and Object.create(null)) opened a plain TCP socket. Now it's a TLS connection with the tls: true defaults, so the chain and the host name are verified. A program that wanted plaintext has to omit tls or pass tls: false. Without a handshake handler, open() runs after the TLS handshake, not at TCP connect. Unchanged: tls absent, undefined, null or false is plain TCP, and servers with tls: {} are plaintext. (Bun.connect: a tls object that sets no option means tls: true #44681)
  • A socket timeout of N seconds fired between N' - 4 and N' on 1.4.4, with N' = N rounded up to 4. Now it fires between N and N + 4: Bun.serve's default idleTimeout of 10 moves from 8-12 s to 10-14 s. fetch, the WebSocket client and bun install padded their own values by 4 s on 1.4.4, so theirs fire up to 4 s sooner than before, never before N. fetch's 5-minute default moves from 300-360 s to 300-304 s, an idle pooled fetch connection from 240-300 s to 300-304 s. Bun.FetchSession's keepAlive.idleTimeout is no longer capped at 238 minutes. (usockets: store the socket timeout as a 32-bit due tick, so socket.timeout() above 240 s fires #45614)

node:net

  • Accepted sockets close like dialed ones and like Node's: 'close' comes from setImmediate (1.4.4: the next tick), pending is false after the connection closed (1.4.4: true), a write() after that fails with EBADF (EPIPE on Windows), and localAddress / localPort are undefined if first read after the close (1.4.4 looked them up at accept). A write that a close cuts off without a send error fails with ECANCELED (1.4.4: ERR_SOCKET_CLOSED). A throw in a queued write's callback is an uncaughtException (1.4.4: the socket's 'error'). An allowHalfOpen socket with no 'error' listener whose connection is reset emits 'end', 'finish', 'close' (Node throws the unhandled error). resume() then pause() in one tick reads nothing more into a full buffer. If the callback of a write buffered behind a failed write throws, it runs twice, as in Node's Writable (1.4.4 never emitted 'close' there). net.Server closes a peer on its blockList without 'drop', as in Node (1.4.4 emitted it). server.keepAliveInitialDelay is in seconds, as in Node (1.4.4: milliseconds).
  • 1.4.4 turned a bug in a connect callback into a socket 'error' plus 'close'; a program with an 'error' listener and no 'uncaughtException' handler kept running (and maybe reconnected). Now it exits with the uncaught error, like on Node. (net: route throws from socket lifecycle listeners to uncaughtException #29762, in part)
  • 1.4.4: new net.Socket({ fd }) on a socket fd above 2 (the writable: true only form is node:net: queue what EAGAIN leaves of a write to an adopted fd, cancel it on destroy() #41835) was inert. Now it owns the fd: it reads, keeps the process alive while open, and closes the fd on destroy(). A descriptor that can't be opened (for example one that another socket of the process owns, EEXIST) throws open <code> from the constructor, like Node. onread works on such a socket. Every other way to adopt a descriptor follows the same rule (not on Windows): listen({ fd }) and Bun.listen({ fd }) on a connected socket of this process fail with EEXIST, as in Node (1.4.4: EINVAL). After fs.closeSync() on a live server's descriptor, adopting one that got the same number fails with EEXIST until the stale server is closed. Bun.connect({ fd }) accepts 0 and a BigInt (1.4.4 ignored them and asked for a hostname), and a truthy localAddress / localPort of the wrong type throws instead of being ignored (both are undocumented). (net/cluster/child_process: IPC handle delivery, listen({fd})+SCM_RIGHTS, socket_list, cluster listen semantics (+15 tests) #34659, in part)
  • 1.4.4 called the getConnections() callback synchronously and passed 0 once close() was called; now it's called on the next tick with the live count. (node:net: getConnections() reports live count after close() #35086)
  • 1.4.4 let a second listen(port, "localhost") / Bun.serve({ hostname: "localhost", port }) / Bun.listen({ hostname: "localhost", port }) succeed on 127.0.0.1 while another server held [::1]:port; now it throws or emits EADDRINUSE. Nothing changes without a hostname. (usockets: stop the listen addrinfo loop on EADDRINUSE so listen(port, "localhost") reports the conflict #36710, in part)
  • 1.4.4 accepted "/tmp/u\0nix" and used /tmp/u; now listen/connect fail with EINVAL (Bun.serve and Bun.listen throw, Bun.connect rejects, node:net emits 'error'). node:cluster: a SCHED_NONE worker's listen(path) with a path longer than sun_path failed with ENAMETOOLONG on 1.4.4 and now listens, as the same call already did outside cluster (Node fails with EINVAL in both). (Reject paths with embedded null bytes in Bun.mmap, unix sockets, and bun:sqlite #38514, in part)
  • 1.4.4: net.setDefaultAutoSelectFamily(false) on the main thread also applied to Workers started later. Now each Worker starts from the CLI flags, as in Node. The two setters return undefined (1.4.4 returned the value). (node:net: keep the autoSelectFamily defaults per Worker #41364)
  • 1.4.4: a failed write on new net.Socket({ fd, writable: true }) had node:fs's message ('EPIPE: broken pipe, write'), now Node's 'write EPIPE' (same code, errno and syscall). socket.pending on such a socket is false as in Node (1.4.4: true). new net.Socket({ fd: N, writable: true }) with N above 2 throws open EEXIST, as in Node, when a socket of this process owns N; 1.4.4 adopted it and closed it under its owner on destroy(). That includes a second net.Socket on the same N (1.4.4: both worked, and N was closed twice). _handle exists on such a socket and has fd, as in Node. (node:net: queue what EAGAIN leaves of a write to an adopted fd, cancel it on destroy() #41835, in part)
  • bytesRead is now a getter on net.Socket.prototype with no setter, as in Node, so socket.bytesRead = n throws in strict mode and is ignored in sloppy mode. On 1.4.4 it was a writable own property. So Object.keys(socket), { ...socket } and util.inspect(socket) don't show it. (node:net: count bytesRead on the native socket handle #42313, in part)
  • 'timeout' is now also emitted during connect when a write is already queued, as Node does. (net: fire socket.setTimeout() while the socket is still connecting #42399)
  • A connected socket with queued writes now emits 'timeout' after two idle periods with no progress, like Node, so a 'timeout' listener runs where it didn't on 1.4.4. (net: fire socket.setTimeout() when the write queue stalls #42404)
  • bytesWritten restarts at 0 as soon as connect() is called again on the same Socket. 1.4.4 showed the previous connection's count until the first write. (node:net: read bytesWritten from the native socket handle #42468, in part)
  • 1.4.4 ignored an invalid typeOfService option (999, '16', null); now new net.Socket() / net.connect() throw ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE or ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE like Node (node:net: honor typeOfService, keep the type of service for unix and TLS-over-stream sockets #42472)
  • A queued write that the kernel rejects: the write callback and 'error' get the send's error (write EPIPE), then 'close' with hadError true, after the data the peer sent. Node reports the same error and drops that data. Windows reports it too. (node:net: fail the write when the flush at the end of the open dispatch gets a fatal send error #43026)
  • A socket adopted from a descriptor, which is every connection a node:cluster worker accepts: an error from the native layer destroys it ('error', then 'close' with hadError true), like any other socket. 1.4.4 emitted 'error' and left the close to the native side (hadError false). (node:net: emit 'error' once when a buffered write on an adopted fd fails #43038)
  • A node:net listen() error is built like Node's UVExceptionWithHostPort: errno is negative (1.4.4: 98, now -98), a unix path's error has port: -1, port: 0 is no longer set, a bad fd has address: null and no address in the message (1.4.4: '::'), a unix path in a missing directory is EACCES as in Node (1.4.4: ENOENT, 'Failed to listen at ...'), and every libuv code gets Node's text, not only five. So is a failed dgram bind(): negative errno, and, unless the port asked for was 0, err.port and a message that ends in :PORT. Bun.udpSocket's and Bun.listen's own bind errors keep their positive errno, but the undocumented Bun.udpSocket({ fd }) reports EBADF and ENOTSOCK with a negative one (1.4.4: 9 and 88). (node:net: fall back to 0.0.0.0 when listen() gets no host and the kernel has no IPv6 #43201)
  • 1.4.4 emitted 'end' then 'close' on destroy(); now only 'close', like Node. 1.4.4 called the in-flight write's callback inside destroy() with ERR_SOCKET_CLOSED; now it runs from the event loop with ECANCELED (syscall 'write'), after 'error' and before 'close'. 1.4.4 emitted 'finish' and called req.end(cb) without an error for an http request whose last write failed (destroyed mid-upload); now there is no 'finish' and cb gets the error Node gives (the destroy error, or ECANCELED after a plain destroy()). It follows that after a local destroy(), stream.finished(socket) and stream.pipeline(socket, ...) report ERR_STREAM_PREMATURE_CLOSE (1.4.4: no error), and a readline interface over the socket isn't closed. An exception thrown by the callback of a write that destroy() fails is an uncaughtException. 1.4.4 swallowed it. writableEnded and readableEnded stay false after destroy(), a write after end() fails with ERR_STREAM_WRITE_AFTER_END instead of EPIPE, 'error' comes before the failing write's callback, resume() on a destroyed socket is ignored, and a TLSSocket over a Duplex closes without 'end'. (node:net: cancel the in-flight write when the socket is destroyed #43250, in part)
  • 1.4.4 left a socket passed as a child's stdio flowing in the parent; now it's paused after spawn(), as on Node. A parent that passes a socket only as the child's stdout and keeps reading it needs socket.resume(). (child_process: stop the parent's reads on a socket handed to a child as stdio #43707, in part)
  • 1.4.4 emptied the whole accept queue in one loop iteration; now 32 per iteration. A setImmediate or timer can run between the 32nd and 33rd open/connection/request of a burst. server.stop() called from such a callback finds the rest still queued, and those clients get a reset (the PR measured 32 of 100 answered, was 100; Node answers 2). (usockets: bound the accepts of one listener readiness event #44198)
  • 1.4.4 listened on a random port for listen("") / listen(" ") (net and http); now it throws, so server.listen(process.env.PORT) with PORT set to an empty string fails like on Node. 1.4.4 http took "80.5" / {port: "12abc"} / "1e3" as 80 / 12 / 1; now the first two throw and "1e3" is 1000. 1.4.4 http emitted 'error' (ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE) for 65536, -1, 1.5, NaN; now listen() throws ERR_SOCKET_BAD_PORT. 1.4.4 http listen({port: "0", path}) used the path; now the port. 1.4.4 net listen("-1") threw; now "-1" is a pipe name, as on Node. listen({ port, path }) with a valid numeric port, 0 included, binds TCP. 1.4.4 bound the unix socket. (fix(node:net): validate listen ports synchronously #44555, in part)
  • 1.4.4 returned an already-destroyed socket from net.connect(missingPath). Now it's connecting until the next loop turn, then emits 'connectionAttemptFailed', 'error', 'close' (Node's order). Calls made right after connect(missingPath) run before the failure is reported. (node:net: report a failed unix-socket connect on the next loop turn #45011, in part)
  • 1.4.4 called a callback that was followed by another argument (listen(0, host, cb, undefined), listen(0, cb, undefined)); now it isn't called, same as Node. 1.4.4 failed listen(0, {}, cb) / listen(0, true, cb) with a lookup error; now a non-string host is ignored, same as Node. (node:net: take the last listen() argument as the callback, as node does #45472)
  • 1.4.4 ran the callback of a queued write(), and the 'drain' after it, with the AsyncLocalStorage store of connect() / listen(). Now they see the store of the write() call, as in Node. (node:net: complete a write that waited for the socket in the async context of the write #46141, in part)

node:quic

  • A node:quic client or server created without ca now verifies against Bun's default CA store (bundled roots, OpenSSL's default paths, NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS, the system store with --use-system-ca), like fetch and node:tls. It used to trust only SSL_CERT_FILE / SSL_CERT_DIR and OpenSSL's default paths, so connect() to a public server failed on a machine without /etc/ssl/certs. (node:quic: verify against the default CA store when no ca is given #43089)

How did you verify your code works?

  • Each fix has a test that fails on 1.4.4 and passes on the branch. Bugs only a sanitizer sees were checked against a debug + ASAN build of main. A few tests can't fail on Linux (macOS and Windows fixes), and a few pass on both builds because they guard what the second pass could have broken.
  • CI was green on every platform, 181 of 181 BuildKite jobs and every GitHub check, a few changes before the current head.
  • For node:* changes, the same script prints the same on Node 26.12.1 and on the branch, apart from the differences listed above. Of 342 node:net scenario traces, 255 equal Node's (1.4.4: 160).
  • Test files, compared by test name on debug + ASAN builds. Before the second pass, about 1,900 files against main: 16 did worse, all traced to machine load, a shared temp directory or a race that 1.4.4 has too. During it, each group of changes against the build before it: 1,024 files (1,010 exit 0 before, 1,014 after; of the other 10, 7 also fail before and 3 pass when run alone), 68 TLS files (3,526 tests pass before, 3,589 after, none went from pass to fail) and 343 more (about 25,000 tests; the failures need the network, Docker or a non-root user, also fail on main, or come from tests newer than the binary).
  • Node's own tests: 141 of 141 test-net-*.js, 430 of 430 tls, net, https, stdio and pipe files, 84 of 84 dgram files.
  • Tables against 1.4.4 and Node: 29,970 rows of TLS option x value x API (no new throw, no change in the 12,960 rows of Bun.*, fetch and WebSocket), 798 rows of TLSSocket members on an https req.socket (all equal to a tls.Server socket's), 2,024 rows of connections that must be rejected and of mutual TLS (no change), 13 connect errors x 5 clients, 208 rows of lost tails, 40 real-time timer cells (21 early on 1.4.4, none now).
  • Random programs: 1,280 on the ASAN build with no hang and no report (a control that never resumes a paused socket hung in 19 of 20), 4,500 on 1.4.4, Node and the branch, which found six unintended differences, all fixed, and about 2,700 during the second pass, which found the write callback that runs twice (listed above). None of 556 TLS connections that had to be rejected got through.
  • All 649 names the PR deletes were searched for in every tracked file, the exported ones also in the prebuilt WebKit and the vendored libraries. Two wrong deletions were found and restored.
  • Syscalls per connection, counted with strace on servers and clients, are equal to 1.4.4 or lower.
  • Speed, on CI's linux-x64 release builds, with main against a copy of itself as the noise control. At that green head: TLS echo, https keep-alive (about 125 more user cycles per request), fetch keep-alive and Worker ping-pong are within noise, and 1 KB Buffer writes are cheaper (-14.6 % user cycles over TCP, -3.1 % cycles over TLS). Earlier heads: no throughput regression in Bun.serve, node:http, node:http2, fetch, net, tls and Bun.connect echo, or large downloads. The timer change costs 39 user cycles per request. 1 GB queued at once on a net.Socket goes from 399 to 779 MB/s (socket: drain node:net's pending-write queue with a cursor #44219). require("node:net") and require("node:tls") took 0.25 ms (2 %) longer and the binary grew by 348 KB, both measured before the second pass only.
  • That benchmark found one regression. Sequential Bun.connect TLS connections with an event-loop turn between a close and the next connect built their TLS context again each time: +1.1 % wall time with tls: true, +3.9 % with one ca certificate, 771 µs to 2.08 ms per connection with the bundled roots as ca plus cert and key. The context cache now keeps the 16 contexts used last. That fix hasn't been measured on a release build yet.
  • Windows, macOS and FreeBSD code is compiled and run by CI only. Locally the usockets C files were type-checked for those platforms. Several bugs in Windows-only branches reached CI that way and are fixed. The Linux event-loop change has no test here. No benchmark ran on macOS, Windows or arm64.

src/runtime/socket/socket_body.rs, src/runtime/socket/pending_writes.rs, src/js/node/net.ts, src/runtime/socket/WindowsNamedPipe.rs
Tracks pending writes, preserves write ordering and byte counts, handles queued end(data), and applies peer-FIN and named-pipe shutdown state.
Connections, listeners, and timeouts
packages/bun-usockets/src/*, src/runtime/socket/Listener.rs, src/runtime/socket/SSLConfig.rs
Updates connect-error reporting, shared listeners, accept limits, DNS candidate cleanup, parked TLS handshakes, timeout wheels, Unix-path validation, and listener hot reload.
Event-loop and socket regressions
test/js/bun/net/*, test/js/node/net/*, test/js/bun/spawn/*
Adds tests for short writes, resets, queued tails, timer behavior, accept scheduling, descriptor adoption, byte counters, and nested event-loop dispatch.

DNS and process compatibility

Layer / File(s) Summary
DNS result ordering
src/dns/lib.rs, src/runtime/dns_jsc/*, src/js/node/dns.ts
Propagates setDefaultResultOrder() to native connect ordering and invalidates affected DNS cache entries.
Shared descriptors and child-process streams
src/js/node/child_process.ts, src/runtime/ipc_host.rs, packages/bun-usockets/src/*, test/js/node/child_process/*
Marks shared listeners, stops inherited stdio reads, and expands descriptor-transfer and shared-server coverage.

Possibly related issues

Priority: Normal

Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: Low · up to 93373

The change is broad across TLS and socket behavior, and several earlier concerns are still open. The most notable are queue-lifetime handling during re-entrant writes, a QUIC empty CA list, and hot-reload listener reuse. None is established as a likely serious failure. Resolve or explicitly accept these before merging, and confirm CI passes on Windows and macOS.

Explanation

The title names four areas (node:net, node:tls, Bun.connect/Bun.listen, usockets) and frames the PR as a consolidation of open PRs. That matches the changeset, which spans these areas, but the title is long (101 characters) and lists components instead of the main behavior change. It is related and specific enough to pass.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The active coding requirements are implemented and tested. Windows named-pipe shutdown preserves the final peer reply [#39723]. https.Server provides addContext() and HTTPS request sockets use TLS socket behavior [#12157, #16834]. TLS ticket-key getters and setters work [#14604]. BoringSSL IP name constraints support permitted and excluded IPv4 and IPv6 ranges [#45055]. Named-host listeners report EADDRINUSE across loopback families [#15560]. Connect-phase, HTTP-request, and stalled-write timeouts remain active and are rescheduled correctly [#42398, #41133, #42403]. listen() handles an explicit undefined backlog and invokes the callback [#45090]. The memory-leak regression test is present [#20627]. Closed linked issues add no requirements.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description includes both required sections. It clearly explains the PR scope, behavior changes, exclusions, and verification results. It also identifies known validation limits and possible lag behind the current branch head.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The pull request contains substantial changes not required by the active linked issues. Examples include default CA propagation and --use-openssl-ca, DNS result-order behavior, empty-object TLS defaults for Bun.connect, the 32-connection accept limit, socket destruction and pending-write behavior, TLS SNICallback and setKeyCert() behavior, QUIC CA handling, CLI flag parsing, and hot-reload listener takeover. The related tests and documentation also cover these separate objectives.

Resolution

Remove unrelated implementation, tests, and documentation from this pull request, or move them to pull requests with directly linked active issues for those objectives.

Beyond the inline finding, a few other candidates were examined and ruled out: the --use-openssl-ca + NODE_USE_SYSTEM_CA=1 hard exit in src/bun_core/Global.rs matches Node's own conflict error; the queued-write buffer handed to send in socket_body.rs::send_queued is protected by the SENDING_QUEUE flag so discard_queued_writes cannot free it under a re-entrant Duplex write; and the socket timeout wheel in packages/bun-usockets/src/socket.c only wraps for values beyond what the public API can set. Given the size (174 files, ~13k lines across usockets, BoringSSL patching, TLS context handling and node:net/tls), a maintainer pass is still needed.

Extended reasoning...

The change consolidates dozens of PRs across node:net, node:tls, https.Server, Bun.connect/listen, usockets event loop and TLS context construction, plus a BoringSSL name-constraint patch and CA-store flag handling, so it touches TLS verification and certificate trust directly. One confirmed finding is posted inline; the remaining candidates (CA flag conflict, queued-write lifetime, timeout wheel, kqueue re-entrant dispatch, fd-adopted sockets) were checked against the code and ruled out. The scale and the security-sensitive surface rule out approval regardless.

src/runtime/socket/socket_body.rs:1421-1428
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Do not free the queued slice while send_queued is active.

internal_flush calls send_queued with write_check_error. That closure can run JavaScript. A re-entrant terminate() calls close_and_detach, which still calls clear_and_free() while SENDING_QUEUE is set. The send can then access freed memory. The same paths also bypass the bytesWritten accounting.

Route these cleanup paths through discard_queued_writes:

🐛 Suggested fix
- self.buffered_data_for_node_net
-            .with_mut(|b| b.clear_and_free());
+        self.discard_queued_writes();

Apply the same replacement in connect_failed, detach_for_reconnect, write_buffered, and end_buffered. Keep the writev completion cleanup unchanged because it already accounts for the bytes written.

🟡 Minor · Compare pause_on_connect before reusing a listener. · Listener.rs:320-324

src/runtime/socket/Listener.rs:320-324
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Compare pause_on_connect before reusing a listener.

If a --hot run changes pauseOnConnect on the same plain-TCP address, this condition can reuse the old listener. New accepted sockets then keep previous.pause_on_connect, so they do not follow the new setting. Include previous.pause_on_connect == pause_on_connect in the reuse condition; otherwise, replace the listener.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/runtime/socket/socket_body.rs — nit, pre-existing: a client socket.upgradeTLS({ tls: {} }) still throws "Expected "tls" option" while Bun.connect({ tls: {} }) now opens TLS. src/runtime/socket/Handlers.rs:520 maps an option-less tls object to tls_true_defaults for a client, but src/runtime/socket/socket_body.rs:3664-3678 keeps the None from SSLConfig::from_js and throws. Fix: give every entry point that takes a tls object the same meaning for {} (upgradeTLS and reload alongside connect), either by applying tls_true_defaults for a client at src/runtime/socket/socket_body.rs:3673 or by sharing the Handlers.rs mapping.

    Why this was flagged

A program calls socket.upgradeTLS({ tls: {}, socket: handlers }) on a Bun.connect client socket, for example to run STARTTLS after reading a banner. src/runtime/socket/socket_body.rs:3666 calls SSLConfig::from_js, which returns None for an object that sets no option (src/runtime/socket/SSLConfig.rs:298), so ssl_opts stays None and line 3678 throws "Expected "tls" option". The same {} given to Bun.connect now means TLS through src/runtime/socket/Handlers.rs:520. The base branch threw here too, so this is pre-existing; the change makes the two entry points disagree about what tls: {} means.

Verification: pre-existing (nit). Trigger: a program calls socket.upgradeTLS({ tls: {}, socket: handlers }) on a Bun.connect client socket. At src/runtime/socket/socket_body.rs:3664-3678, SSLConfig::from_js returns Ok(None) when the object sets no option and line 3678 throws Expected "tls" option. The base socket_body.rs throws identically, so upgradeTLS behavior is unchanged by this PR.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Route handed-off HTTPS sockets directly to HTTP/1.

If an application re-emits a handed-off HTTPS socket on "connection", the guard permits it through, but tlsServer.emit("connection", socket) wraps the already decrypted socket again. The next HTTP request then enters a second TLS handshake instead of HTTP parsing. Send handed-off NodeHTTPServerSocket instances to connectionListenerHTTP1; reserve TLS setup for new transport sockets.

src/runtime/socket/socket_body.rs:1854-1856
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Arm close-after-flush when peer FIN arrives.

When handlers.on_end() is empty and buffered_data_for_node_net contains an ordinary queued write, on_end returns before calling end_on_peer_fin(). For sockets with allowHalfOpen: false, this leaves END_AFTER_FLUSH unset. on_writable then returns without flushing or closing because no drain handler is present.

Call end_on_peer_fin() before returning. It is a no-op for half-open sockets and preserves the queued-write close behavior for sockets configured to end on peer FIN.

Suggested fix

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Protect the queued slice from re-entrant writes.

send_queued passes a slice backed by StreamBuffer to a Duplex write that can run JavaScript. A re-entrant socket.write() can append to the same Vec<u8>. If that append reallocates, the active write can retain a dangling slice. SENDING_QUEUE prevents discard, but it does not prevent append.

Defer queue mutation while send_queued is active, or send from stable owned storage.

🟡 Minor · Compare pause_on_connect before reusing the previous hot-reload listener. · Listener.rs:320-324

src/runtime/socket/Listener.rs:320-324
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Compare pause_on_connect before reusing the previous hot-reload listener.

The unchanged check compares ssl, socket_flags, allow_half_open, and context. It does not compare pause_on_connect.

pause_on_connect is a plain bool on Listener, and the reuse path does not update it. accepted_socket_flags() reads it for each accepted socket. If the user changes pauseOnConnect between --hot runs, the reused listener keeps the old value. The change is silently ignored, and the listener is not rebound.

Add the comparison so a changed value stops the previous listener and creates a new one.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve earlier writes when a timeout callback calls end().

When a partial write remains queued, a timeout callback can call end(data) to finish the socket. These lines discard the earlier bytes before end(data) is written. The peer receives a truncated or reordered stream even though a timeout only notified the application. Keep the queued bytes ahead of the final data, or explicitly fail the earlier write before closing.

Keep queued bytes stable during reentrant sends.

send_queued passes the queue slice to a callback that can run JavaScript. A reentrant write() can append to buffered_data_for_node_net through PendingWrites::append_slice. The queue uses a Vec<u8> backing store, so growth can invalidate the slice while the send still uses it. SENDING_QUEUE prevents the close path from taking the queue, but it does not prevent reentrant appends.

Move the bytes being sent into separate owned storage. After the send returns, merge unsent bytes before writes added during the callback. Preserve the existing byte-count and partial-send behavior.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the two inline findings, I re-checked the three fixes from the previous round in 01395ab: the backward scan over earlier batch entries in epoll_kqueue.c stops a nested tick from re-dispatching a merged kevent, stop_stale in Listener.rs now runs only after the SSL context is built so a broken certificate leaves the old listener serving, and the is_closed() guard after drain_reads in socket_body.rs keeps error from following close — each does what was asked.

Extended reasoning...

The latest push touches epoll_kqueue.c, Listener.rs, socket_body.rs, _http_server.ts and six test files; the native changes were read against the prior-round comments and match them. The PR remains a large TLS/net change with a confirmed security-relevant finding (empty ca: [] still trusting the default store), so it is not a candidate for approval.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline note, I re-checked the four items flagged on the previous push and they are addressed in 99da494: set_ca_store_from_flags now only counts command-line flags, fdIsWriteOnly is passed from net.ts so FdPipe is reachable, https.Server#setSecureContext forwards options via __proto__ instead of a spread, and bsd_set_reuse honors LIBUS_LISTEN_DISALLOW_REUSE_PORT_FAILURE again. One new candidate was ruled out: the { ...options } copy in the http Server constructor (src/js/node/_http_server.ts:364) drops key/cert inherited from a prototype, but Node's https.Server makes the same copy, so this is pre-existing and Node-compatible.

Extended reasoning...

This push continues the net/tls consolidation (267 files, ~20k insertions) and touches TLS context construction, CA store selection, socket timeouts and usockets fd ownership; the one new inline finding is a NULL-check nit in bsd_owned_word. The four findings from the prior run were verified as fixed in the code rather than from the resolution metadata.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/js/internal/tls.ts — nit, pre-existing: a program that assigns an unrecognized string to tls.DEFAULT_MIN_VERSION or tls.DEFAULT_MAX_VERSION gets a context with no version bound instead of Node's TypeError. toProtocolVersion at src/js/internal/tls.ts:70 returns 0 when version is null and the fallback names no version, although its own comment says Node's toV() throws there. Fix: when the fallback is used, run it through the same check as an explicit value, so an unknown default throws $ERR_TLS_INVALID_PROTOCOL_VERSION for both the minimum and maximum bounds, while still returning 0 when no fallback is given (nodeClientTlsToNative passes none).

    Why this was flagged

A program sets tls.DEFAULT_MIN_VERSION = "TLSv1.4" (a typo) and then calls tls.createServer or tls.createSecureContext without a minVersion option. src/js/node/tls.ts:454 calls nativeCiphersAndVersions(options, DEFAULT_MIN_VERSION, DEFAULT_MAX_VERSION), and src/js/internal/tls.ts:70 does if (version == null) return typeof fallback === "string" ? protocolVersionCode(fallback) : 0;, so the unknown name becomes 0 and the native parser at src/runtime/socket/SSLConfig.rs:114 treats 0 as no bound, leaving BoringSSL's own minimum (TLS 1.0). Node's toV() does v ??= def and then throws ERR_TLS_INVALID_PROTOCOL_VERSION for any name it does not know, so the same program fails loudly there. The base branch (tlsStringToProtocolVersion at the old src/js/node/tls.ts:520) also returned 0 for an unknown default, so this is pre-existing; the new comment at src/js/internal/tls.ts:498 describes Node's throw but the code does not do it. No other check catches it: validateSecureContextOptions only sees options.minVersion, which is undefined here.

Verification: nit, pre-existing. Trigger: a program assigns an unrecognized string to tls.DEFAULT_MIN_VERSION / tls.DEFAULT_MAX_VERSION. src/js/internal/tls.ts:70 returns the raw result of the native lookup for the fallback. Only the explicit-value branch (line 71-72) throws $ERR_TLS_INVALID_PROTOCOL_VERSION; the fallback branch never does. Pre-existing: the base did the same (base src/js/node/tls.ts:520-521).

  • 🟣 src/js/node/net.ts:268 — nit: a program started with a non-integer or huge --network-family-autoselection-attempt-timeout value now crashes the first time node:net is loaded. The execArgv loop at src/js/node/net.ts:265 and :268 only checks Number.isFinite(value) && value >= 1, then calls setDefaultAutoSelectFamilyAttemptTimeout, whose validateInt32 at net.ts:221 throws ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE for 250.5 or 1e12. Fix: make the CLI seeding accept exactly what the setter accepts (an integer in 1..2^31-1, e.g. Number.isInteger(value) plus the upper bound) or clamp like Node's atoll parse, so a bad flag value is ignored at module load as the comment at net.ts:263 intends.

    Why this was flagged

A user runs bun --network-family-autoselection-attempt-timeout=250.5 app.js (or =1e12); src/runtime/cli/Arguments.rs:319 accepts any string for this flag and it reaches process.execArgv. When app.js first requires node:net (directly or via node:http), the module-load loop at src/js/node/net.ts:253-275 parses the value with Number() at :262/:267 and, since it is finite and >= 1, calls setDefaultAutoSelectFamilyAttemptTimeout at :265/:268. That function runs validateInt32(value, "value", 1) at net.ts:221, a Node-semantics validator (src/js/internal/validators.ts:165) that throws ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE for a non-integer or a value above 2^31-1, so the require of node:net throws and the program fails to start. The comment at net.ts:263-264 says degenerate CLI values are ignored rather than thrown at module load, but the guard does not cover these inputs. On the base branch the flag was not declared in Arguments.rs and these defaults lived in native code (the removed node_net_binding.rs setters), so no module-load throw existed; Node parses the integer option with atoll and never throws here.

Verification: pre-existing (nit). Trigger: --network-family-autoselection-attempt-timeout=<non-integer or > 2^31-1> and any module requires node:net. src/js/node/net.ts:261-268 only guards Number.isFinite(value) && value >= 1; the setter at net.ts:220-221 is validateInt32(value, "value", 1), so 250.5 and 1e12 throw ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE. The same loop and guard exist on the base (base net.ts:252-259).

The thread-end sweep (3b03862) fixes the reset that I was about to fix in a separate PR, so I did not open one. Two findings from that work, measured on e4ab1cf. One commit on top of it fixes both: 51c1529d4c (10 source files, +62 -34, and tests). It merges onto 57d2b5a with no conflict.

1. The close_notify of a thread that ends still draws a reset behind a plain TCP hop

A thread that ends sends close_notify, then closes. The peer answers the close_notify. When the answer arrives before the close(), the kernel resets the connection because of the unread bytes (TcpExtTCPAbortOnClose). The relay in "when %s exits with a connection open" keeps the client's last record, so the server never answers and the test cannot see it.

Setup: Node 26.3 hosts test/js/node/test/common/proxy-server.js and an https server, as test-https-proxy-request.mjs does. The child is a debug build that runs request-and-log.js with BUN_DESTRUCT_VM_ON_EXIT=1. The table counts the runs in which the proxy logs client response for connect: ECONNRESET.

child idle 6 copies at once
main 5c6d4e2 42 of 42 not run
e4ab1cf 6 of 60 14 of 60
e4ab1cf with the commit 0 of 60 0 of 60
Node 26.3 0 of 12 not run
-        us_socket_close(s, LIBUS_SOCKET_CLOSE_CODE_CLEAN_SHUTDOWN, 0);
+        us_socket_close(s, thread_ends ? LIBUS_SOCKET_CLOSE_CODE_FAST_SHUTDOWN : LIBUS_SOCKET_CLOSE_CODE_CLEAN_SHUTDOWN, 0);

With this line a thread that ends sends the FIN alone, as a process that exits does and as Node does when a Worker ends. sentLast becomes [] for all four kinds of that test.

  • CI: test-https-proxy-request.mjs, test-https-proxy-request-ipv6.mjs, test-https-request-proxy-post.mjs and test-http-set-global-proxy-from-env-https-request.mjs assert the proxy's log, and the ASAN lane runs their child with BUN_DESTRUCT_VM_ON_EXIT=1. Today Bun's tunnel socket reports a reset as 'end', so they pass. A tunnel socket that reports it as 'error', as in Node, makes them fail in a part of the runs.
  • Cost: a peer that is connected directly reads EOF with no close_notify when a Worker ends, as it does today when a process exits. PostgreSQL 17 then logs could not receive data from client: Connection reset by peer once per idle TLS connection: 0 lines on e4ab1cf, 1 line with the commit. A normal process.exit() logs that line on both builds, and so does Node with pg.

2. A Bun.serve or node:https server in a thread that ends still resets its connections

NewServer's abort handle ignores its cause, and TemplatedApp::close() calls us_socket_group_close_all (thread_ends = 0). The Listener got Connections::CloseAsThreadEnds. The server did not.

Repro: a TLS client through a plain TCP relay to a server in a Worker, then worker.terminate(). The relay's socket to the server sees ["end", "close false"] for Bun.listen and ["error ECONNRESET", "close true"] for Bun.serve.

The commit passes the cause from NewServer::stop to uws_app_close and Http2Context::closeAll, and gives the stop reason to the client sockets of a graph context (SocketGroups::close_all). stop(true) is not touched: it resets as before.

Verification

Debug builds, Linux x64. "head" is e4ab1cf, "commit" is 51c1529 on top of it.

  • Proxy path with only the one line above and nothing else of the commit: 0 of 40 idle, 0 of 60 with 6 copies at once.
  • The same path in a fresh network namespace, 20 runs each: head has 2 failing runs and TcpExtTCPAbortOnClose = 2. The commit has 0 and 0. TcpOutRsts is 20 on both: the kernel also resets when the peer's record arrives after the close, and nothing observes that one.
  • PostgreSQL 17.11, one idle Bun.sql TLS connection, log lines for that backend. Worker end: head 0, 0, 0 and commit 1, 1, 1. process.exit() on the main thread: 1, 1 on both builds. Node 26.3 with pg: 1 at exit and 1 at Worker end. In 1 of the 3 Worker runs on head the server's close_notify arrived before the client's close: the client sent a RST and no FIN.
  • test/js/node/tls/node-tls-connect.test.ts with the commit: "when %s exits with a connection open" 11 of 11, "a Bun.listen() TLS connection with unsent data" 2 of 2, and the new "an idle TLS connection of a server in a Worker" 2 of 2. On head the new Bun.listen row fails on sentLast: [21] and the new Bun.serve row on ["error ECONNRESET", "close true"].
  • The four vendored proxy tests with BUN_DESTRUCT_VM_ON_EXIT=1 and the commit: 20 of 20 each.
  • 14 test files, run one after the other on head and with the commit: tcp-server, socket, serve, bun-server, serve-http2, serve-http2-lifecycle, worker, worker-terminate-lifetime, worker_threads, node-tls-server, node-http, isolation, tls-sql, websocket. No test fails only with the commit. Two tests failed once with the commit in those runs and behave alike on both builds when repeated: "terminate(): nothing of the worker's runs after the request" fails 1 of 12 on each, and "websocket in subprocess > should exit after timeout" passes 6 of 6 on each.
  • Not run: macOS and Windows.

Both findings are fixed in e818374.

1. The reset behind a plain TCP hop. A thread that ends now closes its TLS connections with the FIN alone, as a process that exits does and as Node does when a Worker ends. That is your line in us_socket_group_close_all_ex, for the parked sockets too. sentLast is [] for all kinds in "when %s exits with a connection open". It was also why tls.Server gave a FIN in some runs and a reset in others: the peer's answer to the close_notify was unread at the close().

2. Bun.serve and node:https servers in a thread that ends. The cause goes from the abort handle through stop and stop_listening to uws_app_close and Http2Context::closeAll, and to the client sockets of a graph context. At worker.terminate() the raw connection sees a FIN for Bun.listen, tls.Server, Bun.serve and https.Server. stop(true) resets as before.

From your commit: the server half, without the default arguments, and the idle test, extended to four kinds of server. Node's answer, measured: a TLS client or server in a Worker that ends or is terminated sends nothing and then a FIN, 20 of 20 in all four rows.

The cost you named stands: a peer that is connected directly reads EOF with no close_notify when a Worker ends, as it does when a process exits. The description says so now.

Beyond the inline nit, I checked the new tick_depth bump around TemplatedApp::close() in packages/bun-uws/src/App.h: it nests under the bump us_socket_group_close_all_ex already takes in context.c, and us_internal_loop_post only frees closed sockets at tick_depth <= 1, so a close handler that re-enters the loop defers the frees to the outermost tick whether stop(true) is entered from inside a poll callback or from depth 0.

Extended reasoning...

The last push adds a tick_depth guard to the SSL pre-pass and group walk in App.h close() plus two tests; the earlier commit folded review fixes. The guard was traced against loop.c's free gate and context.c's existing bump; no imbalance was found on the paths examined.

…e stdio options

The exit of a child with an extra pipe is handled one or two turns of
the loop after the reap. In between, exitCode and signalCode were null
for a pid that was gone. They are now set in the callback that reports
the exit.

The hop was decided from the stdio object, which does not exist yet
when Bun.spawn reports the exit before it returns. It is now decided
from the stdio options, and the sockets are read when the immediate
runs.

The mark for a pipe that is passed to a second spawn was written onto
every stream in the stdio array, so spawn() threw for a stream that is
not extensible. It is now set only on the pipes that this module made.

Socket.prototype._destroy is as on main again, and the node:net tests
are removed: the binding line in net.ts is the one of #46522, which
has its own test.

socket.write(s3file) returns 0, and socket.end(s3file) returns 0 and closes the connection with nothing sent. This happens here and on main, at the line that already throws for Bun.file() (socket_body.rs:2798 here). It is older than this PR, and this PR does not move it. A fuzz run found it. No user reported it.

#46833 fixes it on main: +15 -6 of source and a tcp/tls test. Both calls throw the plain Error that WebSocket.send throws since #45223, before anything is sent or ended, and the socket stays open. It ran on Linux x64 only so far.

Fold it in here or leave it, whichever is easier. If it goes in here, I close #46833. A trial merge with this branch at 67a5247 has one conflict: the default byteLength line, which becomes data.len().saturating_sub(byte_offset) here. On a release build of this branch at d134134 the same change takes socket.write("x") from 750 to 704 instructions.

If you fold it, the line for "All behavior changes" is: socket.write(x) and socket.end(x) throw for a file- or S3-backed Blob. They returned 0, and end closed the connection. On a half-closed socket they returned -1.
