Problem

  • spawn() with a "pipe" at stdio index 3 or higher emits 'close' before that pipe delivers: ["","A","B","",""], Node has ["","A","B","CCC","DDD"]. No user reported it.
  • #getBunSpawnIo (src/js/node/child_process.ts) counts only stdout and stderr toward 'close'.

Fix

  • Count each extra pipe's socket toward 'close', handle the exit after the current poll, and resume the pipe on the tick after 'exit', as Node does.
  • child_process.ts and net.ts take setImmediate from a native binding, so a fake clock holds neither 'exit' nor 'close'.
  • A pipe that has not ended delays the exit one loop turn. The reap sets the exit codes.
  • Verified: 16 tests in child_process.test.ts (13 fail on main). Self-reviewed: 28 concerns raised, 24 addressed. Not taken: removing the hop, 3 more (Notes).

Background

Downsides

  • A pipe handed to a second spawn inside 'exit' now throws: it has closed. A late reader of a 250 KB unread pipe gets nothing.
  • macOS still loses bytes the parent had not read at the child's exit (two todo tests).
  • Per exit with an extra pipe: 1 immediate, or 2 and a zero-timeout poll. Without one: +16 bytecode instructions. Binary: +1,519 bytes.
Notes

This is Node parity. No user reported it, and no issue is linked. The demand that exists is other open work: #42819 (a member) has the same count, and #45033 leaves extra pipes to this PR.

Questions for a maintainer.

  1. 'exit' for a child with an extra pipe is delivered from JS after the poll (one immediate, two when the exit is reported ahead of the poll). Is that wanted, or the order in native code first (spawn: report a waiter-thread child exit after the loop's next poll #43888, which has changes requested)? Without the hop, a parent that pauses the pipe right after 'exit' loses a 'close' that main emits.
  2. This PR should merge after net, tls: consolidate the open node:net, node:tls, Bun.connect, Bun.listen and usockets pull requests #46522. May the two net.ts lines stay here until then? Without them the count makes 'close' wait for a socket 'close' that a fake setImmediate holds.

Order with other open PRs.

A replaced or deleted setImmediate. Child sh -c "echo unread >&3", stdio ["ignore","ignore","inherit","pipe"], events the parent gets. Node v26.3.0 and main get 'exit' and 'close' in every row.

setImmediate reader on stdio[3] head b3e174c this head
replaced before node:child_process first loads none nothing exit, close
replaced before the first load 'data' listener data data, exit, close
replaced after the load none exit, close exit, close
replaced after the load 'data' listener data, exit data, exit, close
  • The first two rows came from const setImmediateGlobal = globalThis.setImmediate at module load. mock.timers.enable() of node:test assigns the global, so it reaches these rows, and the capture outlived mock.timers.reset().
  • The last row came from node:net: closeSocketHandle emits a socket's 'close' through the bare global. On main a plain net.Socket under the same replacement gets 'data' and 'end' and no 'close' (Node: all three). The count made the child's 'close' wait for it.
  • Not covered: the kill timer of the timeout option still uses the global setTimeout and clearTimeout, as on main (bun:test: keep built-in modules' own timers out of fake timers (internal/timers) #37987). With clearTimeout deleted or throwing, a socket throws from _destroy as on main, and the child's 'close' is lost with it (12 of 16 cells, 6 of them clean on main).

The reap and 'exit'. With the hop, the child's state was deferred together with its events: for one or two loop turns after the reap, exitCode and signalCode were null for a pid that was gone. A guard such as if (child.exitCode === null) process.kill(-child.pid) in a process 'exit' hook then threw ESRCH (3 of 4 runs, Node and main 0). The callback that reports the exit now sets the codes. The same probe exits 0 in 24 of 24 runs. The cost: exitCode is set before 'exit' is emitted, and the pipe's 'data' listener can see it.

An exit that is reported ahead of the poll. Two paths report the exit before the poll that reads the pipe. One immediate then ran before the bytes, and a parent that paused after 'exit' never got 'close'.

  • No pidfd (seccomp, Linux before 5.3): a thread waits for the child and reports the exit as a task. With BUN_GARBAGE_COLLECTOR_LEVEL=0 BUN_FEATURE_FLAG_FORCE_WAITER_THREAD=1, head b3e174c gave 'exit' before 'data' in 12 of 12 runs, and its readline test got no 'close' in 12 of 12 (main emits it).
  • Bun.spawn calls onExit before it returns when it cannot watch the child (on macOS: a child that is gone already). The stdio object does not exist yet at that point, so the hop was not taken at all. The hop is now decided from the stdio options.
  • Now the first immediate runs the exit only if no extra pipe is still readable. If one is, a second immediate runs it. There are at most two, so 'exit' does not wait for a grandchild that holds the pipe. The second immediate also fires for a pipe that nobody reads. It stays until the order is fixed in native code.

The mark. kIsUsedAsStdio tells the flush to leave a pipe alone that a second child reads. Head b3e174c wrote it onto every stream in the stdio array, so spawn() threw TypeError: Attempting to define property on object that is not extensible for a non-extensible fs.WriteStream, after the child had started. It is now set only on the pipes that this module makes.

Measurements. Linux x64, main 179664e and this head. Debug builds unless a line says release. perf, valgrind, strace and bloaty are not installed here, so the counts are gdb breakpoint hits (Bun__Timer__setImmediate, catch syscall epoll_pwait2), BUN_JSC_dumpGeneratedBytecodes=1, heapStats() and size -A.

  • Built-in calls through a wrapped globalThis.setImmediate per 10 extra-pipe children: 0 with a reader, 0 without (head b3e174c: 20 and 10, Node v26.3.0: 0 and 0).
  • Cells with Node's events: 6 of 6 replaced setImmediate (head b3e174c: 3 of 6), 8 of 8 deleted or throwing setImmediate (2 of 8).
  • Immediates per child exit: 0 with no extra pipe (main 0), 2 with a read extra pipe (main 1, the socket's 'close'), 2 with an unread extra pipe (main 0), 2 to 3 with a waiter thread. epoll_pwait2 calls per 10 children: 10 with a reader (main 10), 20 with an unread pipe (main 10).
  • Per exit of a child with no extra pipe: 0 immediates, 0 queue entries, 0 allocations, +16 bytecode instructions (3 for the test of a flag, 13 because the codes go through #setExitStatus).
  • First load of node:net and node:child_process: +1054 Function, +134 GetterSetter, +287 NativeExecutable cells (main: +1048, +134, +286), the same whether or not the program had read setImmediate. heapStats() after Bun.gc(true), 3 of 3 runs.
  • Release binary (ThinLTO): +1,519 bytes, all in .bun_builtins. .text +0. The file size does not change (107,730,656). One js2native wrapper is new, shared by both modules.
  • Event order, release builds, a reader whose 'data' handler queues an immediate. One spawn a process: data, exit, immediate, close in 12 of 12 runs (Node 12 of 12). 20 spawns a process, 200 rounds: the immediate ran before 'exit' in 51 rounds (Node 60). With a waiter thread: 'data' before 'exit' in 200 of 200 rounds (head b3e174c: 190), and the readline test gets 'close' in 12 of 12 runs (0 of 12).
  • 20 spawns in a row that read stdio[3] on 'data' and check at 'close', rounds without the bytes: Node 0 of 300, main (release) 191 of 200, this head (release) 0 of 200 with a pidfd and 0 of 200 with a waiter thread.

Same class, not changed here. These built-in modules still call setImmediate, clearImmediate or queueMicrotask through the global: http2.ts (16 lines), timers.promises.ts (its load-time capture), internal/streams/iter/classic.ts (5), inspector.ts (3), internal/shared.ts (2), _http_server.ts, _http_common.ts, internal/fs/watch.ts, internal/abort_listener.ts, and queueMicrotask in net.ts (TLS only). None of them is on the path of a child's 'exit' or 'close'. #44917 and #44833 cover them.

Differences from Node that stay.

  • A pipe handed to a second spawn inside an 'exit' listener: this PR throws Passing a stream.Readable without an underlying file descriptor as stdio[0], because the socket has read EOF and closed by then. On main the second child reads the bytes, but only when 'exit' beats the socket's read. In Node the call does not throw, the second child gets no bytes, and the first child's 'close' never comes.
  • A pipe handed to a second spawn at spawn time: the parent still reads it (the read stop is in net, tls: consolidate the open node:net, node:tls, Bun.connect, Bun.listen and usockets pull requests #46522). In 20 runs the second child got the bytes in 19 and the first child's 'close' came in the same 19 (main: 18 and 20, Node: 20 and 0). The rebase on net, tls: consolidate the open node:net, node:tls, Bun.connect, Bun.listen and usockets pull requests #46522 makes this Node's rule.
  • An unread extra pipe holds more in Bun than in Node. With 250,000 bytes, Node's child blocks in write(). Bun's child exits, on main too. A reader attached 300 ms after the spawn then gets all of it on Node and on main, and nothing with this PR: the flush after 'exit' has discarded it. Up to about 100 KB the three agree.
  • spawnSync returns no output entry for an extra pipe, and a child that writes 250,000 bytes to one blocks until the timeout (Node returns them). After a failed spawn, stdio[3] is null (Node: a Socket). Both are the same on main.
  • The exit still closes the IPC channel over unread bytes. A user reported that on macOS (comment on #37849). This PR does not change that channel.
  • A child without an extra pipe reaches 'exit' through process.nextTick, as on main.
  • stdout and stderr are resumed before 'exit' is emitted. A pause() on child.stdout inside an 'exit' listener holds 'close' on main and with this PR (fix(child_process): defer output draining until after exit listeners #45033).
  • spawnSync has no 'close' event and is not changed. The count for the IPC channel is not changed.

Self-review. 28 concerns were raised. Addressed in code: the codes at the reap, the hop decided from the stdio options, the mark kept off the caller's streams, a test above the socket's buffer size, the macOS gates as todo with their cause, no clearTimeout change. Addressed in this text: the order with #46522, #42819 and #45033, the demand, the class, the limits. Not taken:

History of this PR.

  • 3c016d5 counted the extra pipes and nothing else. A parent that did not read an extra pipe never got 'close': the socket kept the unread bytes and never ended.
  • 835ffa2 resumed the extra pipes before 'exit' was emitted, where stdout and stderr get it. A pause() inside an 'exit' listener then held 'close'.
  • 36b22f6 moved the resume to the tick after 'exit', as in Node's flushStdio (source).
  • 65d371c handles the exit after the current poll, and does not resume a pipe that was passed as stdio to a second spawn.
  • b3e174c sets that mark after the spawn has succeeded (not for spawnSync or a failed spawn), took setImmediate from the global at module load, and skips two tests on macOS.
  • 8e68f0f takes setImmediate from a native binding in child_process.ts and net.ts, and adds the second immediate.
  • a5a2498 sets the codes at the reap, decides the hop from the stdio options, and keeps the mark on this module's own pipes.

Why the exit waits for the poll. libuv runs the signal watchers, and with them the child exit callbacks, after the other I/O callbacks of the same poll (source). So in Node the pipes hold what the child wrote when 'exit' fires. Bun's loop has no such order. 'exit' comes first each time the child has exited before the parent registers the socket of the extra pipe in epoll: the pidfd is then ahead of the socket in the ready list. In a trace of 200 rounds on Bun 1.4.3 this was so in 160 rounds, and 'exit' came first in exactly those. A parent that then paused the pipe (readline.close(), unpipe(), pause() after await once(child, "exit")) kept the late bytes in the socket, and with the count 'close' never came. Node emits 'close' there. stdout and stderr do not have this problem: Subprocess::on_process_exit reads them before it calls onExit.

Probes on Linux x64 (Node v26.3.0 / Bun 1.4.3 / this PR, debug build), each a standalone script, three runs or more:

case Node 1.4.3 PR
parent reads stdio[3] on 'data', acts on 'close' data at 'close' empty at 'close' data at 'close'
fd 3's bytes are in the parent's stream at 'exit' (nobody reads) yes no yes
a grandchild holds fd 3 and writes after the parent's 'exit' 'close' waits 'close' at exit 'close' waits
parent starts to read fd 3 inside an 'exit' listener gets the bytes empty at 'close' gets the bytes
nobody reads fd 3 'close' 'close', pipe still open 'close'
parent read one chunk and paused fd 3 rest delivered, 'close' 'close' without the rest rest delivered, 'close'
pause() on fd 3 inside an 'exit' listener 'close' 'close', pipe still open 'close'
readline on fd 3, rl.close() after await once(child, "exit") 2 lines, 'close' 0 lines, 'close' 2 lines, 'close'
'readable' listener on fd 3, never read no 'close' 'close' no 'close'
fork with 'ipc' and a pipe at index 4 message, disconnect, exit, close same as Node

Also with this PR: kill() with unread bytes, destroy() of stdio[3] at once, 200 spawns with an unread fd 3 (200 'exit', 200 'close'). Eight shapes of an 'exit' listener on fd 3 (pause() with and without a 'data' listener, pause() then resume() later, 'readable', for await, pipe() into a slow Writable, 'data'): seven give Node's output. With for await started in 'exit', the bytes arrive right after 'close' instead of before it, as on 1.4.3.

macOS. In CI build 123598 (head 9b321ab) two of the tests failed on the macOS lanes and passed on every Linux and Windows lane. The paused pipe had "one" at 'close' (every attempt on macOS 27 aarch64, some attempts on the other two lanes), and the pipe that the parent starts to read in 'exit' had "" (some attempts). The bytes that the parent had not read when the child exited are lost there. Read from source, not run on macOS: the kqueue dispatch in packages/bun-usockets/src/eventing/epoll_kqueue.c turns the write-filter EV_EOF of a socket that is not paused natively into an error close, and SocketEmitEndNT in net.ts then destroys the stream with its unread buffer. This is the socket layer and it is the same on main. #46522 changes that close to a clean one for a unix peer that closed both directions (packages/bun-usockets/src/loop.c, under LIBUS_USE_KQUEUE). Both tests are todoIf(isMacOS) until then. A parent that reads the pipe on 'data' from the start gets its bytes on macOS too.

Suites (bun bd test, debug build of main 179664e merged with this head):

  • test/js/node/child_process/child_process.test.ts: the 15 tests of the block 'close' and extra stdio pipes and the test for a stream passed as stdio pass. With main's src/, 13 of the 16 fail. The other three are guards (a pipe passed to a second spawn is not resumed, a pipe in each direction with kill(), nothing written onto a caller's stream). The seven new tests of the block run one at a time, so the block starts no more processes at once than before.
  • Other tests of that file fail in the debug build with and without the change: spawn still works with more than 10240 fds open and extra stdio pipes are not double-closed on GC (a 5 s timeout). The concurrent group of child.stdout.destroy() inside a 'data' listener and execFile() maxBuffer against a fast writer times out at 5 s in some whole-file runs, with and without the change.
  • The other files of test/js/node/child_process/ pass. child_process_ipc_handle.test.ts times out at 5 s in some runs of the debug build, with main's source too.
  • test/js/node/net/node-net-server.test.ts and node-net-allowHalfOpen.test.js pass.
  • test/js/node/test/parallel/: test-child-process-*.js (102), test-net-*.js (141), test-readline-*.js, test-tls-socket-close.js, run directly: the same three exit non-zero with and without the change (bad-stdio, emfile, windows-hide).
  • With a release build of this head the 16 tests take 0.6 s.
  • tsc --noEmit -p src/js/tsconfig.json is clean. oxlint reports the same 5 warnings as on main and no error.

Not run.

  • Windows and macOS on my machine. In CI build 132020 (this head) child_process.test.ts passes on both Windows lanes and on macOS aarch64, with the two macOS todo tests. The macOS x64 test jobs had not started when this was written: they expired twice in the queue.

no test proof · iteration 5 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/js/node/child_process/child_process.test.ts

Walkthrough

ChildProcess changes exit scheduling when extra stdio pipes exist. It resumes eligible extra pipes after exit and tracks socket-fd socket closure. Tests cover extra-pipe data delivery and lifecycle event ordering.

Changes

Extra stdio lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Extra stdio scheduling and close tracking
src/js/node/child_process.ts
When an extra pipe exists, exit handling uses setImmediate. After exit, readable extra pipes are resumed unless they are marked as child stdio. Socket-fd sockets now count toward close tracking.
Extra-pipe lifecycle tests
test/js/node/child_process/child_process.test.ts
Adds tests for late data, listeners attached after exit, unread and paused pipes, readline closure, synchronous-spawn use of a pipe, and pipes passed to another child. Tests check data delivery and close-event ordering.

Explanation

The title names the two main changes: extra stdio pipes at index 3 or higher now count toward 'close', and they are flushed after 'exit'. This matches the raw summary and the objectives, which describe counting extra-pipe sockets in close tracking and resuming extra pipes on the tick after 'exit'. The title is concise, specific, and follows the repository's conventional 'area: description' style.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is complete and relevant. It explains the problem, implementation, behavioral differences, limitations, platform coverage, test results, and verification commands. It does not use the exact template headings, but it provides the required information in equivalent sections.

LGTM — mirrors the stdout/stderr close-accounting for extra pipe fds, with a solid regression test.

Extended reasoning...

Overview

This PR touches two files: a 4-line functional change in src/js/node/child_process.ts (the default: branch of #getBunSpawnIo for stdio index >= 3) and a new regression test in test/js/node/child_process/child_process.test.ts. The fix wraps the extra-fd net.Socket creation in a block, increments #closesNeeded, and registers a once('close', () => this.#maybeClose()) listener — an exact copy of what the case 1/case 2 branch already does for stdout/stderr.

Security risks

None. No user input parsing, no auth/crypto/permissions, no new external surface. The change only affects internal event-ordering bookkeeping for extra stdio pipes.

Level of scrutiny

Low-to-moderate. This is a small Node.js-compat correctness fix in a built-in JS module, following an established in-file pattern. The main risk to check was double-counting: #getBunSpawnIo for i>=3 is only reached via #createStdioObject(), which is cached behind the .stdio getter (and further replaced by an own data property on first access), so each extra fd is materialized exactly once. The eager for (let item of this.stdio) loop in spawn() runs synchronously after Bun.spawn succeeds, so #closesNeeded is fully populated before any #maybeClose() call. The fd == null early return precedes the increment, so failed/absent handles don't inflate the count.

Other factors

The test is well-constructed per repo guidelines: wires 'error' to reject, awaits the actual observable conditions (close + all four end promises), asserts exact byte content on every fd and strict ordering (end<i> before close), and is skipIf(isWindows) consistent with the neighboring extra-stdio tests. The PR description demonstrates the failure on the released binary and the match with Node's documented semantics. No CODEOWNERS cover these paths, no outstanding reviewer comments, and the bug-hunting system found nothing.

LGTM — mirrors the stdout/stderr close-accounting pattern for extra stdio pipes.

Extended reasoning...

Overview

This PR touches two files: a 4-line runtime change in src/js/node/child_process.ts (the default: branch of #getBunSpawnIo for stdio index ≥ 3) and a new test in test/js/node/child_process/child_process.test.ts. The runtime change wraps the existing case "pipe"/"socket-fd" body in a block, stores the net.connect({ fd }) result in a local, increments #closesNeeded, and registers socket.once("close", () => this.#maybeClose()) before returning it — byte-for-byte the same accounting the case 1/2 (stdout/stderr) branch already does.

Security risks

None. No user-controlled input parsing, no auth/crypto/permissions, no new external I/O. The change only adjusts when an internal counter is incremented and when an event listener is attached to an internally-created socket.

Level of scrutiny

Low-to-medium. This is a small Node.js-compat correctness fix in the JS-side node:child_process shim, not native/memory-sensitive code. The pattern being applied is copied verbatim from the adjacent stdout/stderr branch, so there's no novel mechanism to reason about. I verified that .stdio (and thus #getBunSpawnIo for i≥3) is eagerly materialized exactly once during spawn() via hasSocketsToEagerlyLoad before onExit runs on nextTick, so #closesNeeded is bumped before any #maybeClose() call and there's no double-increment (the stdio getter caches #stdioObject). net.Socket always emits 'close' (including on error/destroy), so the counter cannot get stuck.

Other factors

  • No CODEOWNERS coverage for these paths.
  • The bug-hunting system found no issues.
  • The test is well-constructed: awaits real conditions (per-stream end promises + child close), wires error to reject, snapshots data and ordering at close time, and asserts every end<i> precedes close. Skipped on Windows (uses /bin/sh fd redirection), which matches the neighboring extra-stdio tests.
  • No outstanding human review comments on the timeline.

Status: head a5a2498 has the fix, verified on Linux x64. In CI build 132020 the test file passes on every Linux lane, on both Windows lanes and on macOS aarch64. The macOS x64 test jobs have not started: they expired twice in the queue and are queued again. It should merge after #46522. On macOS one case stays open, see below. Two questions for a maintainer are in the description.

Repro for the reported case. Node v26.3.0 and this head print ["","A","B","CCC","DDD"]. A release build of main 179664e prints ["","A","B","",""].

import * as cp from "node:child_process";
const c = cp.spawn("/bin/sh", ["-c", "printf A; printf B >&2; printf CCC >&3; printf DDD >&4"], {
  stdio: ["ignore", "pipe", "pipe", "pipe", "pipe"],
});
const got = ["", "", "", "", ""];
for (const i of [1, 2, 3, 4]) c.stdio[i].on("data", d => (got[i] += d));
c.on("close", () => console.log(JSON.stringify(got)));

Repro for the case that head b3e174c got wrong: setImmediate is replaced before node:child_process first loads, as a fake clock does. Node v26.3.0, main and this head print exit 0 and close 0. Head b3e174c printed nothing.

globalThis.setImmediate = () => {};
const { spawn } = await import("node:child_process");
const child = spawn("sh", ["-c", "echo unread >&3"], { stdio: ["ignore", "ignore", "inherit", "pipe"] });
child.on("exit", code => console.log("exit " + code));
child.on("close", code => console.log("close " + code));

Repro for the case that earlier heads got wrong: the parent does not read the extra pipe. Node v26.3.0, main and this head print one line. The first head (3c016d5) printed nothing.

import { spawn } from "node:child_process";
import { once } from "node:events";
(async () => {
  const c = spawn("/bin/sh", ["-c", "echo result; echo progress >&3"], { stdio: ["ignore", "pipe", "inherit", "pipe"] });
  let out = "";
  c.stdout.on("data", d => (out += d));
  await once(c, "close");
  console.log("close came; stdout = " + JSON.stringify(out));
})();

macOS: the bytes of an extra pipe that the parent had not read when the child exited do not arrive (CI build 123598: a paused pipe had "one" of "onetwo" at 'close'). This is the same without this PR. A parent that reads the pipe on 'data' from the start gets its bytes. The two tests for it are todoIf(isMacOS). The PR description has the details.

…at exit

Node emits 'close' after the process has ended and every stdio stream
has closed. It counts the socket of each stdio pipe at spawn. After
'exit' it resumes each stdio stream that nobody reads, so that the
stream reaches EOF and closes (flushStdio).

ChildProcess did both steps for stdout and stderr only. A pipe at stdio
index 3 or higher was not counted, so 'close' fired before its data
arrived.

Count the socket of each extra pipe in #getBunSpawnIo. In #handleOnExit,
resume each extra pipe that is still readable, next to the same step
for stdout and stderr. Without the second step a pipe with unread bytes
never ends and 'close' never fires.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline nits, I also checked the two behavior changes this introduces for extra pipes and they match Node: 'close' now waits while a grandchild still holds the fd (Node's _closesNeeded counts every stdio handle at index > 0), and a reader attached only inside the 'close' handler sees no data (Node's flushStdio resumes every readable stdio stream after exit). The lazy-creation timing of #closesNeeded++ is not a concern in practice: spawn() materializes this.stdio eagerly whenever the stdio array has 3 or more entries, so the extra sockets and their counts exist before any exit accounting starts.

Extended reasoning...

The change touches the node:child_process builtin ('close' accounting and the post-exit drain in src/js/node/child_process.ts) plus four new subprocess tests; no security-sensitive surface. Two nits are posted inline and one verified finding went unposted, so approval is not appropriate; the note records the Node-parity and eager-materialization checks that ruled out the remaining behavioral concerns.

Node resumes the stdio streams that nobody reads on the tick after
'exit' (flushStdio), not before the 'exit' listeners run. Do the same
for the pipes at stdio index 3 or higher.

With the resume before 'exit', a pause() inside an 'exit' listener left
the unread bytes in the socket. The socket never ended and 'close' never
fired. Node emits 'close' in that case.

The tests now read stderr too, and the two tests for an unread pipe
check that the pipe closed before 'close'. All five fail without the
change in src.
libuv runs a child's exit callback after the other I/O callbacks of the
same poll, so in Node 'exit' fires after the pipes got what the child
wrote. Bun's loop has no such order: the socket of a pipe at stdio index
3 or higher could get its bytes after 'exit'. A parent that paused the
pipe after 'exit' (readline.close(), unpipe(), pause()) then kept those
bytes in the socket, and 'close' never fired.

When the child has such a pipe, handle the exit after the current poll.

Mark a stream that is passed as stdio to a spawn, and do not resume a
marked pipe after 'exit': the second child reads it now. Node does the
same with kIsUsedAsStdio.

@dylan-conway This PR overlaps #42819 in src/js/node/child_process.ts. This note is for the rebase of whichever lands second.

  • Remove libuv on Windows #42819 adds the same count for the pipes above stderr (#closesNeeded++ and the 'close' listener in #getBunSpawnIo). It resumes those pipes in the drain block of #handleOnExit, before 'exit' is emitted.
  • This PR has the count too. It resumes the pipes on the tick after 'exit', and it handles the exit after the current poll. With the resume before 'exit' alone, a pause() on the pipe inside an 'exit' listener holds 'close' forever. Node and main emit 'close' there.

Two things to watch in the rebase:

  1. Keep one #closesNeeded++ for the extra pipe. With two, 'close' never fires. Git reports this hunk as a conflict.
  2. The resume loop in the drain block of #handleOnExit becomes redundant, because the flush after 'exit' covers it. Git does not report it: this PR does not touch those lines.

The tests in the block 'close' and extra stdio pipes (index >= 3) fail if the count is doubled or if the flush after 'exit' is lost.

…user timers

Set the used-as-stdio mark once Bun.spawn has a child for the stream,
not while the options are read. spawnSync and a spawn that fails leave
the stream unmarked, so an unread pipe is still resumed after 'exit' and
'close' still comes.

Take setImmediate at module load, as node:timers/promises does. A test
that replaces globalThis.setImmediate (fake timers) then does not hold
the 'exit' of a child with an extra pipe.

Skip two tests on macOS: there the bytes that the parent had not read
when the child exited do not arrive.

I checked this head (b3e174c) merged onto main 5c6d4e2. The merge has no conflicts. Linux x64.

The script is the first row of the probe table, 20 times in a row. The parent reads stdio[3] on 'data' and uses the result at 'close'.

import { spawn } from "node:child_process";
let missing = 0;
for (let k = 0; k < 20; k++) {
  const c = spawn("sh", ["-c", "printf A; printf RESULT >&3"], { stdio: ["ignore", "pipe", "inherit", "pipe"] });
  let out = "";
  let fd3 = "";
  c.stdout.on("data", d => (out += d));
  c.stdio[3].on("data", d => (fd3 += d));
  await new Promise(r => c.on("close", r));
  if (out !== "A") throw new Error("control failed");
  if (fd3 !== "RESULT") missing++;
}
console.log(`${missing} of 20 rounds had no fd 3 bytes at 'close'`);
build rounds without the fd 3 bytes at 'close'

main 5c6d4e2 with this PR (debug) 0 of 200

With src/js/node/child_process.ts from main and the tests from this PR, seven of the eight new tests fail. With the PR all eight pass.

One addition to "Why the exit waits for the poll": the order is not limited to a first spawn. The cause is a child that exits before the parent registers the socket of the extra pipe in epoll. The pidfd is then ahead of the socket in the ready list, and the loop dispatches in that order. A trace of 200 rounds on Bun 1.4.3 shows it. In 160 rounds the child had exited before the EPOLL_CTL_ADD of the socket. 'exit' came before the fd 3 bytes in exactly those 160 rounds. (The trace is an LD_PRELOAD shim that calls waitid(WNOWAIT) at the EPOLL_CTL_ADD.)

… engine

A fake clock replaces globalThis.setImmediate (mock.timers of node:test,
sinon). node:child_process read the global when it was first loaded, and
node:net reads it at each socket close. A child with a pipe at stdio
index >= 3 then got no 'exit' and no 'close'. Both modules now bind the
host function behind the global.

Without a pidfd a thread reports the exit ahead of the poll that reads
the pipes. A pipe that has not ended then gets one more turn of the loop
before 'exit'.

Socket.prototype._destroy calls clearTimeout only for a socket that has
a timeout.

…e stdio options

The exit of a child with an extra pipe is handled one or two turns of
the loop after the reap. In between, exitCode and signalCode were null
for a pid that was gone. They are now set in the callback that reports
the exit.

The hop was decided from the stdio object, which does not exist yet
when Bun.spawn reports the exit before it returns. It is now decided
from the stdio options, and the sockets are read when the immediate
runs.

The mark for a pipe that is passed to a second spawn was written onto
every stream in the stdio array, so spawn() threw for a stream that is
not extensible. It is now set only on the pipes that this module made.

Socket.prototype._destroy is as on main again, and the node:net tests
are removed: the binding line in net.ts is the one of #46522, which
has its own test.

Beyond the inline note, I also checked a few things in this push and found nothing to report: the $newCppFunction("node/NodeTimers.cpp", ...) capture resolves through the js2native codegen (file lookup is suffix-based, so the subdirectory path works) and the host function takes the extra callback arguments both modules pass it; the kIsUsedAsStdio write only lands on sockets this module created, since #createStdioObject stores null at index >= 3 for user-supplied streams and the === false guard skips everything else, so flushStdioPipe never resumes a user stream; and the polled flag bounds #exitAfterPoll to at most two immediates.

Extended reasoning...

The push since the last review replaces the module-load snapshot of globalThis.setImmediate with an engine-level $newCppFunction binding in both child_process.ts and net.ts, moves the kIsUsedAsStdio mark to after a successful Bun.spawn, and adds subprocess tests for replaced/deleted setImmediate, the waiter-thread path and the exit-in-spawn path. No security-sensitive surface is touched. The one confirmed finding is a test-coverage nit on fork(); the items above were examined from the diff and the codegen source and ruled out.
