prompt(), confirm(): skip a byte order mark at the first dialog read of stdin - #46280
A UTF-8 byte order mark (EF BB BF) at the front of piped stdin becomes part of the first dialog answer. printf '\xEF\xBB\xBFy\n' | bun -e 'console.log(confirm("ok?"))' prints false. prompt() returns "\uFEFFyes".
confirm() compares the first raw byte with y (src/runtime/webcore/prompt.rs:105). prompt() keeps every byte.
Fix
The first dialog read of the process drops one mark. Output::take_first_dialog_read() (src/bun_core/output.rs) is true once.
confirm() reads past the mark. prompt() cuts it with strings::without_utf8_bom.
Verified: test/js/web/web-globals.test.js (28 cases, 11 fail on main).
Self-reviewed: 13 concerns raised, 13 addressed.
Waiting for the maintainer's word
This is the dialog half of the question in #45944. No user reported it. Should the dialogs read stdin as one UTF-8 decode?
Yes, once per process: merge as it is.
Yes, for every answer: I remove the flag and strip each answer.
No, as node:readline: I close this PR.
main -> now:
confirm(), mark + y: false -> true
prompt(), mark + yes: "\uFEFFyes" -> "yes"
prompt("q", "d"), mark-only line: "\uFEFF" -> "d"
Background
The mark is the encoding signature of the writer. Windows PowerShell 5.1 sends ef bb bf 79 0d 0a for 'y' | bun when the console input code page is 65001. PowerShell 7 sends it when $OutputEncoding has a preamble.
Bun.stdin.text() and the console iterator drop the mark already.
Considered one reader in bun_core under every line parser: three times the size.
Downsides
The flag marks the first dialog read, not byte 0 of stdin. After fs.readSync(0), a mark on a later line is dropped too.
A second mark stays. Windows PowerShell 5.1 sends two when $OutputEncoding also has a preamble, and confirm() is still false.
Each dialog call has one more atomic swap. confirm() on y: 409 -> 417 instructions. .text +256 bytes.
Notes
More of main -> now
prompt("q"), mark-only line: "\uFEFF" -> null, the result of an empty line.
The example in docs/runtime/secrets.mdx with a token line that starts with a mark: fetch throws TypeError: Header 'Authorization' has invalid value -> the request has Authorization: token ghp_.... I ran the prompt() and fetch lines. I did not run secrets.set.
Another reader took line 1, and the first dialog line is mark + y: confirm()false -> true. With the console iterator before prompt(): ["a", "\uFEFFb"] -> ["a", "b"].
Not changed: y \r\n (a space after y) and mark + y \r\n are false on both.
The rule. Each reader of stdin drops one byte order mark, at the first bytes that it reads itself. Bun keeps no position on stdin across readers. Bun.stdin.text(), the console iterator (#45944) and now the three dialogs are such readers. This is what one UTF-8 decode of the bytes that the dialogs read gives. The price: a U+FEFF that is meant as the first character of the first answer is gone. The alternative is main: a script removes the mark from prompt() itself, and it cannot do that for confirm().
A mark in a bound string was data in #45304 ("a leading U+FEFF was dropped" in bun:sqlite is a bug that it fixed). There the U+FEFF was a character of a string value. Here it is the signature of a byte stream, before the bytes are decoded.
Deno 2.9.8 has the same three dialogs (run on Linux x64, and read in runtime/js/41_prompt.js)
Piped stdin: the dialogs do not read it. confirm() is false and prompt() is null for each input.
A terminal: confirm() decodes each answer by itself, and that decode drops a mark. Two answers that each start with a mark give [true, true]. prompt() keeps the mark: "\uFEFFyes".

A temporary test block recorded this on the Windows lanes of this PR (Windows Server 2019 x64 with 5.1.17763, Windows 11 aarch64 with 5.1.26100). It is removed again (commits 8ce36e9 and ef4cb6d).
The mark comes once for each pipeline: 'y', 'y' | bun sends ef bb bf 79 0d 0a 79 0d 0a.
On main, confirm() is false for each of these inputs that has a mark (run on Linux with the same bytes).
PowerShell 7.4.6 on Linux x64, run here: the same as 7.5.2 with line end 0a. An empty pipeline (@() | bun) sends ef bb bf alone. A piped string that itself starts with U+FEFF arrives behind a second mark.
A file that was saved with a mark and redirected to stdin gives the same bytes. That case is in the tests.
What the code does
take_first_dialog_read() swaps a process flag to false and returns the old value. confirm() and prompt() call it after they read their first byte, so an empty line also uses it up. alert() calls it after its line, also when it read no byte.
confirm(): when the flag was set and the first byte is EF, it reads the next two bytes. After BB BF the byte that follows is the answer. After anything else the answer is no, as on main, and confirm() stops at the same byte as on main: a line end that it read ends the line, and any other byte sends it to the existing loop that reads to the line end.
prompt(): the line is in a buffer already. The mark is cut from its front. An empty rest returns what an empty line returns.
Input without a mark: the same read(2) calls on 12 inputs and the same answers. 17 of the 28 test cases pass on main and pin this.

Tests
web-globals.test.js, block "byte order mark at the first dialog read of stdin": 28 cases, each in a fresh process. On a release build of main 11 fail and 17 pass. On the debug build of this branch 28 pass.
The 17 pin what must stay: a U+FEFF on a later line (after a prompt, an empty prompt, a confirm, an empty confirm, an alert), a U+FEFF after the answer, a second mark, EF and EF BB before a line end, characters that start with EF (U+FF7F, U+FEC0) in front of y, and the end of stdin inside or after a mark.
Also run on the debug build: the whole of web-globals.test.js (89 pass), test/internal/source-lints (182 pass).
A design review picked one reader in bun_core::output that hides the mark from all five native line parsers. A self-review of that diff (+136/-62 source lines, a trait, a generic reader, renamed constructors) said that it is too large for a defect that nobody reported, and it conflicted with Wait for input when a synchronous read of stdin gets EAGAIN #46192. This PR is the small form: +45/-1 source lines.

…of stdin
A UTF-8 byte order mark (EF BB BF) at the front of piped stdin was part
of the first answer: confirm() returned false for "y", and prompt()
returned "\uFEFFyes" or, for a line with only the mark, "\uFEFF" and not
the default.
The first dialog read of the process now drops one mark. confirm() reads
past it before it looks at the answer. prompt() cuts it from the line.
Output::take_first_dialog_read() is true once per process, so a U+FEFF
that a dialog reads later stays.
This block runs on Windows only and fails on purpose. The failure output
records the bytes that Windows PowerShell 5.1 and PowerShell 7 write to
the stdin of a Bun child, and what confirm() and prompt() answer. It is
removed before the pull request leaves draft.
How to reproduce, with a release build of main (9b4284f):
# prints false. Expected: trueprintf'\xEF\xBB\xBFy\n'| bun -e 'console.log(confirm("ok?"))'# prints 4 %uFEFFyes. Expected: 3 yesprintf'\xEF\xBB\xBFyes\n'| bun -e 'const a = prompt("q"); console.log(a.length, escape(a))'
test/js/web/web-globals.test.js has both as tests, in the block "byte order mark at the first dialog read of stdin".
CI for d4f10da (build 133045): each lane passes except macOS x64. Two tests fail there on each retry: test/js/node/http/node-http-uaf.test.ts and test/js/bun/module-graph/module-graph-isolation.test.ts. This change does not touch them, and the same two tests fail on that lane for other pull requests today (builds 133041, 133039, 133036 and 133021). test/js/web/web-globals.test.js passes on macOS x64 and on the two Windows lanes (89 pass, 0 fail).
This pull request waits for a maintainer's answer to the question in its description.
The record is in the pull request description: Windows PowerShell 5.1
writes EF BB BF in front of piped text when the console input code page
is 65001, and PowerShell 7 writes it when $OutputEncoding has a preamble.
Dialog reads now track whether the current read is the first in the process. The first dialog read handles a leading UTF-8 BOM. Prompt handling also returns its default value or null when the resulting answer is empty.

🟡 (optional) After an alert() that read nothing, a later confirm() on a line beginning with a byte order mark answers false, while the same sequence through confirm() first answers true. alert() at prompt.rs:61 consumes the flag unconditionally, even when its loop at prompt.rs:55 broke on an immediate Err (EOF, EAGAIN on a non-blocking fd, or a transient read failure), whereas confirm() (prompt.rs:131) and prompt() (prompt.rs:338) return before taking it. Fix: take the flag only once a dialog has actually consumed its first byte, in all three functions, so the mark skip applies to the first bytes a dialog reads.
Why this was flagged
Trigger: stdin is a terminal or a non-blocking fd (a parent or process.stdin can set O_NONBLOCK on fd 0, and take_byte at src/bun_core/output.rs:2747 returns Err on EAGAIN) and the script calls alert() then confirm(). alert()'s loop at src/runtime/webcore/prompt.rs:55 breaks on the Err without reading any byte, then prompt.rs:61 swaps the flag to false. confirm() then reads the actual first bytes of stdin, EF BB BF 79 0A, but prompt.rs:75 sees the flag already false and returns 0xEF, so the _ arm at prompt.rs:174 drains the line and answers false. With confirm() first, the same bytes answer true. The base branch answered false in both orders, so the new code is now order-dependent for the same input. The dismissal (argued, six finders) only considered a TTY Ctrl-D and ignored that the three dialogs take the flag at different points: confirm() and prompt() after a successful first byte, alert() regardless of success. Remedy: in alert(), take the flag only after at least one byte was read, matching the two siblings.
Verification: Triggered when fd 0 is non-blocking and the writer's bytes are not yet in the pipe when alert() runs; the following confirm() then answers false exactly as the base does. alert()'s loop at src/runtime/webcore/prompt.rs:54-59 breaks on the first Err without consuming anything, and line 61 then runs Output::take_first_dialog_read(); unconditionally. The new tests (test/js/web/web-globals.test.js:392, 404) only cover alert() consuming a real line.

Correct. alert() calls take_first_dialog_read() after its read loop, also when the loop read no byte (src/runtime/webcore/prompt.rs:57). confirm() and prompt() return before the call when their first read fails, so there the flag stays for the next dialog.
The sequence is false on main too. I ran it on Bun 1.4.3. Stdin was a regular file that is empty at the first dialog and gets the mark and y after it. alert() and then confirm() give [null,false]. So this change makes nothing worse there. The sequence stays unrepaired when alert() is the dialog that reads nothing.
d4f10da only merges main, so alert() is unchanged. The description now states that alert() takes the flag also when it read no byte. The repair is to take the flag in alert() only after it read a byte. It rides the next push to this branch, if the maintainer's answer keeps the flag.
