Delete BufferedStdin: prompt(), bun init and the publish OTP question take one line of stdin - #36369
prompt() takes up to 4095 bytes past its line. The next confirm(), Bun.stdin, a stdin: "inherit" child and postpublish after the publish OTP question lose them.
BufferedStdin is deleted. StdinReader::read_line, skip_line and read_yes take one line through its LF, for the dialogs, bun init, and the OTP and security questions.
A terminal in line mode and a POSIX regular file are read in blocks. A pipe or socket is read byte by byte under a lock.
Verified: test/js/web/web-globals.test.js and two more files, 34 new cases, main fails 20. Self-reviewed: 33 concerns raised, 28 addressed, 5 in part.
Background
A pipe cannot take bytes back, so bash read reads it byte by byte.
Considered one read per byte everywhere: torn terminal lines, 14 times slower on a file.
Downsides
On a pipe, and on a Windows file, prompt() does one read per byte. 100,000 lines take 0.8 to 2.3 s on a pipe (main: 0.06 s) and 0.12 s on a POSIX file (main: 0.04 s). Windows: not measured (no machine).
On a pipe, a Worker terminated while it waits in a dialog takes the next line. The main thread gets it in 0 of 8 runs (main: 2 to 7).
Notes
Costs that the summary leaves out. A dialog adds fstat on a pipe, fstat and two lseek on a file, tcgetattr and FIONREAD on a Linux terminal. for await (const line of console) is the reader for bulk input and is unchanged. The Windows and macOS code ran only in CI, on a terminal from Bun.spawn({ terminal }).
How this was found. By a fuzz run and by reading the code. No user has reported lost stdin after a dialog. The security question is the one symptom that needs only a keyboard: yes and Enter cancels the install, and the next reader of the terminal gets s. Released 1.4.2 and main do this.
printf'Alice\ny\n\n\n'| bun -e 'const a = prompt("name?"); const b = confirm("sure?"); alert("hi"); const c = prompt("dflt", "D"); console.error(JSON.stringify({ a, b, c }))'# main: {"a":"Alice","b":false,"c":"y"} branch: {"a":"Alice","b":true,"c":"D"}printf'n\r\nAlice\n'| bun -e 'const c = confirm("sure?"); const p = prompt("name?", "D"); console.error(JSON.stringify({ c, p }))'# main: {"c":false,"p":"D"} branch: {"c":false,"p":"Alice"}
bun publish with stdin 424242\nfor the script\n and a registry that asks for an OTP: postpublish reads 0 bytes on main and 15 on the branch.
A file stdin that the parent already read a line of: prompt() returns the second line, fs.readSync(0) the third, and the parent finds the fourth. main leaves the offset 4096 bytes further.

A Worker is terminated while it waits in prompt(), the main thread then calls prompt(), and one line arrives. The main thread gets it in 8 of 8 runs on a terminal (main 8 of 8) and in 0 of 8 on a pipe. On main the pipe case is a race: 7, 2, 2, 5 and 5 of 8 in five sets. Both threads sit in read(2) there, and the signal of terminate() restarts the read of the Worker. A wait outside the line lock that termination can end repairs it (see prompt, alert, confirm: run JS signal listeners while waiting for input #41723).
Typed ahead on a Linux terminal in line mode, abc Ctrl-D def Enter gives "abcdef" on both builds (2 reads on main, 7 on the branch). The kernel removes the EOF marker after a read that ends at it (canon_skip_eof, drivers/tty/n_tty.c at v6.1).
Not installed here: strace, perf, bpftrace, bloaty, hyperfine. Windows console: not run.
Windows
A console in line mode gives n + Enter as n\r\n. The drain of main stops at the CR, so the next dialog reads an empty line. The branch takes the line with one ReadFile of 4096 bytes.
The terminal cases run through ConPTY and pass on Windows 2019 x64 and Windows 11 aarch64: line mode with n, y, Enter and a 300-character answer, raw mode with n and Enter, and the security question.
A regular-file stdin is read one byte per ReadFile. A read at an offset moves the file pointer of a synchronous handle (libuv restores it after each such read, fs__read in src/win/fs.c), so a block read there is a read ahead and a seek back. Read a regular-file stdin from its position in process.stdin and Bun.stdin.stream() #46700 took a seek-back after prompt() out as new behavior, so it is not added here. The file reads go through OutputSink arms that bun_sys also has for Windows.
Bun.stdin.text() reads a regular-file stdin from byte 0 on Windows, whatever the file pointer is (ReadFileUV, src/runtime/webcore/blob/read_file.rs:1370). Three file rows of web-globals.test.js read the rest with fs.readFileSync(0) there. Not changed here.
macOS, by source
XNU ttread returns 0 for a one-byte read that meets a Ctrl-D typed after text. One read of 4096 bytes returns the text. The case "Ctrl-D after text does not end prompt()" passes on the darwin lanes.
XNU processes input again when a terminal goes back to line mode (PENDIN), so the check for queued input is for Linux only.
The thread of bun publish that waits for ENTER during a web login (publish_command.rs:883) reads blocks of 1024 bytes. After a web login, postpublish still gets an empty piped stdin.
bun repl reads a piped stdin through a buffer of 256 bytes (repl.rs:1176). The two terminal probes of the markdown renderer (md/ansi_renderer.rs) drop keys that were typed ahead.
Text without a line end before EOF is still no answer.
Related open PRs.#46700 and #41687 (stream readers of a file stdin) do not touch these files. #46192, #46280, #43985, #41723 and #38140 change the same read loops and need a rebase onto StdinReader, whichever lands first. A wait such as the one in #41723 belongs before the call to read_line, because nothing may wait under the line lock.
Self-review. Five recommendations are not followed:
A terminal test that pins who gets the line after a Worker is terminated. On a terminal the result is the one of main again, and on a pipe it depends on signal timing.
A terminal test of a prompt() loop against a Worker in fs.readSync(0). On Linux it depends on whether a line arrives before the check for queued input.
A test.todo for a dialog after a stream reader. It does not run in CI.
Removing the Windows skip of the scanner matrix rows. The new scanner case runs on Windows.
Results from a Windows machine before the push. I have none.
A second review of 4d27762 and 063d9fb (the file reads through OutputSink, the test changes) found no defect.
Tests
Each new code path has a case that fails without it: the line lock (two-thread cases), the CR rule (raw-mode case), the drain of a line that is too long (OTP case), the check for queued input on Linux (lines typed in raw mode), the file reader (read count).

…he pipe
prompt() read through the process-global 4 KiB BufferedStdin, which
issues a single read(0, buf, 4096) to refill. When the answer and the
following input arrive in the same pipe write (printf, heredoc, CI
feeds), up to 4086 bytes past the terminating newline were pulled out
of the kernel pipe into that private buffer and became invisible to
every other stdin consumer: Bun.stdin, process.stdin, the console
async iterator, and any stdin:'inherit' child.
alert() and confirm() already use the unbuffered StdinReader (one
syscall per byte) and do not over-read. Switch prompt() to the same
reader so nothing past '\n' leaves the pipe.

prompt() can’t read more than 1024B on macOS #14482 - prompt() can't read more than 1024B on macOS — switching from BufferedStdin to byte-at-a-time StdinReader changes how prompt() interacts with the terminal line discipline buffer limit
prompt() can’t read more than 1024B on macOS #14482 is the macOS canonical-mode 1024-byte line limit (MAX_CANON). Both the old 4 KiB buffered read and the new byte-at-a-time read sit behind the same kernel line discipline on a TTY, so the limit is unchanged.

LGTM — this brings prompt() in line with alert()/confirm()'s unbuffered stdin reader in the same file, and drops an unsafe block in the process. The two inline notes are cleanup nits (a now-dead 3-line alias in output.rs, and an undrained stdout: "pipe" in the test helper) — neither affects correctness.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR fixes prompt() swallowing up to ~4 KiB of trailing stdin by switching from the process-global BufferedStdin (4 KiB refill) to the unbuffered StdinReader (one-byte read()), the same reader alert() and confirm() already use directly above it in prompt.rs. The ReadByte trait impl is retargeted, four &mut *reader derefs become &mut reader, and the unsafe raw-pointer borrow is removed. Five new test.concurrent cases in web-globals.test.js cover Bun.stdin.text(), the console async iterator, an inherit-stdin child, two consecutive prompts, and a 20 KB post-newline payload.
Security risks
None. No new inputs are trusted, no allocation sizing changes, and the change strictly reduces how much data leaves the kernel pipe. An unsafe block is removed.
Level of scrutiny
Low-to-medium. This is a focused bugfix that copies the exact pattern from two sibling functions in the same file — I verified StdinReader::take_byte at src/bun_core/output.rs:2792 does a 1-byte blocking read and errors on EOF, so the read-until-delimiter helpers behave identically to before, just without over-read. The syscall-per-byte cost is bounded by the prompt answer length (the 20 KB tail in the boundary test is read by Bun.stdin, not the byte loop).
Other factors
Confirmed buffered_stdin_reader() now has zero callers (only the definition at output.rs:2825 remains); buffered_stdin() itself stays live via bun init/bun publish. Flagged as a nit.
The test helper's undrained stdout: "pipe" matches the neighboring confirm tests and writes only a handful of prompt bytes, so no deadlock risk — flagged as a nit for REVIEW.md conformance.
Tests use test.concurrent, bunEnv/bunExe, Buffer.alloc(n, fill), assert exact JSON on stderr before exit code, and are placed alongside the existing piped-confirm tests.

Additional findings (outside current diff — PR may have been updated during review):
🟣 src/runtime/webcore/prompt.rs:369-372 — Pre-existing (not introduced here, but in the function this PR touches): the debug_assert!(input[input.len()-1] != b'\r') at prompt.rs:383 fires on piped input whose line content itself ends in \r — e.g. printf 'A\r\r\n' | bun-debug -e 'prompt("?")' panics a debug build, because line 378 strips only one trailing \r. Release compiles the assert out and returns "A\r". Either loop the strip (while input.last() == Some(&b'\r') { input.pop(); }, which then also invalidates the !input.is_empty() assert) or drop the second debug_assert!.
Extended reasoning...
What the issue is
At src/runtime/webcore/prompt.rs:378-383 (immediately after the last hunk this PR touches), prompt() strips at most one trailing \r from the accumulated input and then asserts the last byte is not \r:
The second debug_assert! encodes an invariant the single truncate above does not establish. Any piped line whose pre-\n content ends in more than one \r reaches this point with a \r still at the tail and panics in debug builds.
reader.read_byte() → first_byte = 'A' (neither \n nor \r), so the early-return branches are skipped and input = ['A'].
read_until_delimiter_array_list_append_assume_capacity reads \r (push), \r (push), then hits the \n delimiter and returns Ok → input = ['A', '\r', '\r'].
Line 378: last byte is \r → truncate one → input = ['A', '\r'].
Line 382: !input.is_empty() holds.
Line 383: input[input.len()-1] != b'\r' → false → debug_assert! panics.
A second reproduction with bare \r\r\n: first_byte = '\r' enters the else if first_byte == b'\r' branch, the second read returns '\r' (≠ \n, so no early-return default), both bytes are pushed → input = ['\r', '\r']; the delimiter loop immediately sees \n; truncate leaves input = ['\r']; line 383 fires.
Why existing code doesn't prevent it
The single-byte truncate at line 378 handles exactly the CRLF-terminated case (one trailing \r before the consumed \n). It does not account for user content that itself contains a trailing \r before the CRLF (or LF) terminator. Nothing between the reader loop and the assert normalizes consecutive CRs.
Impact
User-reachable from piped stdin. In debug builds the process panics. In release builds debug_assert! compiles out and prompt() returns a string with a trailing \r (arguably the correct content for input "A\r" + CRLF terminator — the assert is over-strict rather than the truncate being under-strict).
Why this is pre-existing
git blame attributes lines 378–383 to commit d3cfcea1, which predates this PR. This PR only swaps BufferedStdin → StdinReader (same byte sequence delivered) and changes &mut *reader → &mut reader; it does not touch the CR-strip or the asserts. The behavior is identical before and after this PR.
How to fix
Either drop the second debug_assert! (the invariant it claims is not one the code establishes), or replace the single truncate with a loop:
while input.last() == Some(&b'\r'){
input.pop();}
Note that looping the strip can empty input entirely (e.g. bare \r\r\n), so the preceding debug_assert!(!input.is_empty()) would then also need to become a real check (return default on empty) rather than an assertion.
Re the pre-existing \r\r\n debug_assert: confirmed it reproduces on main (present since #30412) and is independent of the reader change here; release builds compile the assert out and return "A\r". Leaving it for a separate change so this PR stays scoped to the over-read fix.

LGTM — all prior feedback addressed (dead alias deleted, stdout: "ignore", comment shortened, CRLF/empty variants added, caller-list docs updated).
What was reviewed:
Retargeting ReadByte from BufferedStdin to the 1-byte StdinReader matches the existing alert()/confirm() pattern in the same file; the generic read_until_delimiter_* helpers are unchanged.
Confirmed buffered_stdin_reader has zero remaining callers and buffered_stdin() is still live via bun init/bun publish.
Tests cover Bun.stdin, console iterator, inherit-stdin child, repeated prompts, 20 KB payload, and LF/CRLF/empty-line delimiter variants; helper uses stdout: "ignore" so no undrained pipe.
The pre-existing \r\r\n debug_assert is noted as out-of-scope by the author (present since #30412, release builds unaffected).
Extended reasoning...
Overview
This PR fixes prompt() over-reading stdin when input arrives in a single pipe write. It swaps the reader from the process-global 4 KiB BufferedStdin to the unbuffered StdinReader (one read(2) per byte), so bytes past the terminating '\n' stay in the kernel pipe for other consumers. Three files touched: src/runtime/webcore/prompt.rs (~10 lines net — retarget ReadByte impl, swap reader construction, drop &mut * derefs), src/bun_core/output.rs (delete dead buffered_stdin_reader() alias, update two caller-list doc comments), and test/js/web/web-globals.test.js (+81 lines of new tests).
Security risks
None. This is stdin byte reading with no new parsing of untrusted input — the read_until_delimiter_* helpers and CRLF handling are unchanged. No auth, crypto, network, or filesystem paths touched.
Level of scrutiny
Low-to-moderate. The runtime change is mechanical: it substitutes one ReadByte implementor for another that alert() and confirm() already use in the same file, and the read loop is generic over the trait so control flow is unchanged. The perf trade-off (one syscall per byte vs. buffered) is acceptable for an inherently blocking interactive API and matches the sibling functions. The test additions are the bulk of the diff and follow harness conventions (test.concurrent, await using, bunEnv, Buffer.alloc(n, fill), exit code asserted last).
Other factors
All four rounds of review feedback on this PR have been addressed in follow-up commits, and each thread is marked resolved. The bug hunting system found no issues on the current revision. The author explicitly scoped out the pre-existing \r\r\n debug_assert (from #30412) as an independent change, which is reasonable — it reproduces on main and release builds compile it out. Test coverage is thorough: 8 new cases across 4 stdin-consumer paths plus a 4 KiB-boundary case, with LF/CRLF/empty-answer parameterization.
How to reproduce, with a release build of main 179664e (bun 1.4.2 gives the same output):
# prompt() takes the rest of the pipe. Prints {"a":"Alice","b":false,"c":"y"}, expected {"a":"Alice","b":true,"c":"D"}printf'Alice\ny\n\n\n'| bun -e 'const a = prompt("name?"); const b = confirm("sure?"); alert("hi"); const c = prompt("dflt", "D"); console.error(JSON.stringify({ a, b, c }))'# confirm() leaves the LF of a rejected CRLF answer. Prints {"c":false,"p":"D"}, expected {"c":false,"p":"Alice"}printf'n\r\nAlice\n'| bun -e 'const c = confirm("sure?"); const p = prompt("name?", "D"); console.error(JSON.stringify({ c, p }))'
test/js/web/web-globals.test.js, test/cli/install/bun-publish.test.ts and test/cli/install/bun-install-security-provider.test.ts hold these and the other cases as tests. The branch contains main as of 179664e.
…t CR
The fall-through drain in confirm() stopped at '\r', so a rejected answer
that ends in CRLF left the '\n' in stdin and the next dialog read an empty
line. A CR inside the line left the rest of the line. #10802 added the
'\r' clause together with the CRLF handling of the accept arms. Those arms
stay. The drain breaks at '\n' only again, like the loop in alert().
Also adds a mixed prompt/confirm/alert sequence on one pipe write, with LF
and CRLF line ends.

prompt: read stdin byte-at-a-time so bytes past the newline stay in the pipe
prompt(), confirm(): consume exactly one line of stdin

LGTM — the earlier review points are all addressed in the diff, and the new confirm() drain-to-\n fix is correct.
What was reviewed:
prompt() now uses the same unbuffered StdinReader as alert()/confirm(); the ReadByte impl retarget and &mut reader call sites are consistent, and no over-read past \n remains.
confirm() drain loop: traced CRLF, yes\r\n, and mid-line-CR inputs through the first-byte match arms into the loop — each stops exactly at the terminating \n.
Dead buffered_stdin_reader() alias removed and both stdin_reader()/buffered_stdin() doc comments updated; grep confirms no remaining callers.
Test helper uses stdout: "ignore" with stderr/exited drained concurrently; new tests cover LF/CRLF/empty, consecutive prompts, 20 KB boundary, stdin:"inherit" child, and confirm() rejected-answer shapes.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
This PR switches prompt() in src/runtime/webcore/prompt.rs from the process-global 4 KiB BufferedStdin to the unbuffered byte-at-a-time StdinReader already used by alert() and confirm() in the same file, so bytes past the answering newline stay in the kernel pipe for later stdin consumers. It also fixes confirm()'s trailing-line drain to stop only at \n (previously \n or \r), so CRLF-terminated or CR-containing rejected answers don't leave a stray \n behind. The now-orphaned buffered_stdin_reader() alias in src/bun_core/output.rs is deleted and the adjacent caller-list doc comments updated. Tests are added to test/js/web/web-globals.test.js.
Security risks
None identified. The change reads from stdin one byte at a time instead of in 4 KiB chunks; no new parsing of untrusted structured data, no auth/crypto/permissions surface, no allocation driven by untrusted lengths beyond what already existed. The read helpers and size-staging logic (2048 → 4096 → unbounded) are unchanged.
Level of scrutiny
Low-to-moderate. The core change is swapping one reader implementation for another that already exists and is exercised by the two sibling functions in the same file — an established pattern, not a new mechanism. prompt() is a blocking interactive API, not a hot path, so per-byte syscalls match the existing alert()/confirm() performance profile. The confirm() drain fix is a one-condition change I traced through every match arm above it (\n, \r, y/Y, other) for LF, CRLF, yes\r\n, and no\rway\n inputs; each lands correctly.
Other factors
All three inline comments from earlier review rounds are verifiably addressed in the current diff: the dead pub alias is gone, the test helper sets stdout: "ignore" and drains stderr/exited via Promise.all, and both stdin-accessor doc comments reflect the new caller sets. The new tests follow harness conventions (bunExe()/bunEnv, -e spawns, test.concurrent, Buffer.alloc(n, fill), output asserted before exitCode, .toEqual on parsed JSON) and cover the input space deliberately — LF/CRLF/empty answers, two consecutive prompts, a mixed prompt/confirm/alert sequence in both EOL modes, a 20 KB payload spanning the old buffer boundary, an stdin:"inherit" child, and four confirm() rejected-answer shapes including CR-inside-line. No outstanding third-party CHANGES_REQUESTED reviews; the one non-bot inline thread was resolved by a non-author. Exit reason was dry_streak.
prompt(), `bun init` and the `bun publish` OTP question read fd 0 through
the process-global BufferedStdin. It refilled with read(0, buf, 4096) and
kept the surplus in a static that no other reader of fd 0 looks at, so
Bun.stdin, process.stdin, fs.readSync(0), a later confirm() or alert(), a
child with an inherited stdin and the lifecycle scripts of `bun publish`
lost up to 4095 bytes per call.
StdinReader is now the only synchronous reader of stdin. read_line,
skip_line and read_yes take one line through its LF and keep nothing:
- alert(), confirm(), prompt(), InitCommand::prompt and the security
scanner question use them. The y/N rule of confirm() and of the scanner
question is one function.
- A rejected y/N answer is taken through its LF. A CR ends it only on a
terminal, where raw mode sends a lone CR for Enter. The drain stopped at
CR everywhere since #10802 and left the LF of a CRLF line behind.
- A line that is too long for read_line is taken whole before the
StreamTooLong error.
- A line lock keeps the main thread and a Worker from splitting one typed
line. The static had no lock at all.
- A Windows console in line-input mode is still read with one ReadFile of
4096 bytes per line. It returns one line at most, and old console hosts
cut a typed line to the size of the request.
One read per byte is needed only where stdin cannot give bytes back: a
pipe, a socket, and input that a terminal already holds.
- A terminal in line mode gives one typed line to one read, so the line is
taken with one read of 4096 bytes, as on main. The line lock is not held
for that read. On Linux this is done only when no input is queued: the
first read after raw mode returns every line that was typed in raw mode.
- A regular file is read with pread at its offset, and the offset is then
set past the line.
- A CR ends a rejected y/N answer only on a terminal in raw mode.
Tests: the y/N answer table, lines around the size of one read, a file
stdin that the parent already read a line of, one prompt() per thread,
all three dialogs from two threads, and terminal cases for accepted and
empty answers, Ctrl-D after text and lines typed in raw mode.

On Windows, Bun.stdin.text() reads a regular-file stdin from byte 0:
ReadFileUV passes an explicit offset to uv_fs_read. Three file rows of
web-globals.test.js failed on the Windows lanes for that reason. On
Windows they now read what the dialog left with fs.readFileSync(0),
which follows the file pointer.
The three scanner cases on a terminal lose their explicit timeout.
OutputSink gets the arms pread, lseek and is_regular_file. StdinLine
uses them in place of its own fstat, lseek and pread calls. One dialog
on a regular file still makes the system calls fstat, lseek, pread and
lseek on fd 0.
Two comments say what the code leaves out: on a terminal in raw mode
only a rejected answer ends at the CR of Enter, and Windows has no
block source for a regular file because a read at an offset moves the
file pointer there.

…ailed seek
StdinLine::next_byte moves the offset of a regular-file stdin when it
gives out the LF of the line, and at the end of the file. It returns the
error of that lseek. So read_line returns Ok and read_yes returns true
only after the offset moved. The Drop impl that did the lseek and
dropped its result is gone.
A read error in the middle of a line now leaves the offset at the start
of the line.
