Problem

  • tls.connect({ socket }) over the socket of an http 'connect' event never starts the handshake. That socket has no handle, and linkUpgraded (src/js/node/net.ts) waits for 'connect'.
  • tlsServer.emit("connection", socket) ignores a TLSSocket that the same server accepted (socket.encrypted && socket.server === this, src/js/node/tls.ts). Node starts a TLS session inside it.
  • A stream that is no stream.Duplex is refused. Node wraps any stream.

Fix

  • A connected socket with no handle takes the stream engine at once.
  • The accept path marks the TLSSocket it emits. The 'connection' listener skips that one event only.
  • hasStreamMethods decides what is wrappable: the seven methods the engine calls.
  • Verified: node-tls-upgrade.test.ts (20 of 46 fail on main), test/js/node/{tls,net}, Node's tls tests. Self-reviewed: 8 concerns raised, 6 addressed (Notes).

Background

  • The TLS layer adopts the fd of a net.Socket that has a handle. It drives every other stream through the stream's own methods (the stream engine).
  • A listening server emits 'connection' with the TLSSocket it accepted. Node emits the plain socket.
  • Considered connecting = false at the wrap for every socket with no handle: a socket that dials later lost an end() made before the dial.

Downsides

  • new tls.TLSSocket(value, options) throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE when value is no stream. Main ignored value.
  • A server that emits its accepted TLSSocket to itself again starts a TLS session inside it. Main ignored the event.
  • Each TLSSocket pays 1 property store and 1 property read, an accepted one 1 more store: 57.4 live objects per connection on both builds. Bundled JS: +1,323 B.
Notes

Where this comes from. #44618 made a TLS wrap resume a paused stream. These are the inputs that still did not complete a handshake, or were refused. There is no linked issue.

Http2SecureServer. Main removed the http2-only TLS attach in a950fc5 (#46270), so a socket that is handed to an Http2SecureServer with emit("connection", socket) now takes the tls.Server path too. Of my 62 tests for such sockets (node-http2-upgrade.test.mts on branch robobun/eab8f4f7/http2-injected-one-tls-wrap, not part of this PR), 7 fail on a debug build of main 7382b38 and pass with this PR: a stream that is no stream.Duplex, a TLSSocket that is emitted again (2 tests), the socket of an http 'connect' event and of an 'upgrade' event, a net.Socket with no handle, and the refusal of what is no stream.

Rows, release builds of main 91e7e3b and of this branch, node v26.3.0.

Input main this PR node
tls.connect({ socket }), socket of an http 'connect' event only the 39 B answer leaves, no ClientHello ClientHello leaves, handshake completes same
tlsServer.emit("connection", ownTLSSocket), listening or injected outer socket inner handshake never completes, no timeout inner session inner session
new TLSSocket(stream, { isServer }), tlsServer.emit("connection", stream), tls.connect({ socket: stream }) with an EventEmitter stream or a plain object that has the seven methods TypeError (ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE, ERR_MISSING_ARGS) handshake handshake
new tls.TLSSocket(stream) with one argument, a plain object that has the seven methods read as options, no handshake handshake starts handshake
the same with a stream.Readable, or with an object that lacks one of the seven methods TypeError TypeError throws where it first calls the missing method
server wrap over a net.Socket subclass that has its own _read and _write and no handle connecting: true after the handshake connecting: false, readyState: "open" connecting: true, and end() never reaches the peer
server wrap over new net.Socket() that dials later, end() before the dial connecting: true, the connection closes same same
client or server wrap over the socket of an http 'connect' event that is destroyed "opening", closes with the socket same same

The rule for a socket with no handle.

  • Client: tls.connect({ socket }) takes the stream engine when the socket has no handle, is not pending and is not destroyed (isNotConnected). Today that is the socket of an http 'connect' or 'upgrade' event, whose pending getter reads connecting. A plain new net.Socket() that dials later still waits for 'connect'.
  • Server: the engine already attaches at once to a socket with no handle. When its handshake completes while connecting is still set, the TLS socket clears it and emits 'connect'. A socket that still dials cannot complete a handshake, so this only reaches a socket that is its own transport.
  • A destroyed socket with no handle is not connected, as in Node (connecting || !_handle). Over the destroyed socket of an http 'connect' event, a wrap reports "opening" and closes with the socket's pending 'close'. When that 'close' has passed, it reports nothing. Node v26.3.0 and main do the same in both orders.

Measured.

  • Bundled JS (release): net.js 102,552 B to 103,216 B, tls.js 45,947 B to 46,238 B, internal/tls.js 13,606 B to 13,934 B, internal/net/symbols.js 445 B to 485 B. Sum: +1,323 B. The last 23 B (third commit) are measured with bundle-modules.ts --debug=OFF alone. Release binary text (size) at the second commit: 107,072,443 B to 107,073,743 B.
  • Listening tls.Server, 1,000 held connections, both ends in one process, 3 interleaved runs: 57.40, 57.42, 57.42 to 57.42, 57.39, 57.40 live objects and 4,983 to 4,975 heap bytes per connection (bun:jsc heapStats() after a full GC). The TLSSocket constructor adds 1 property store. The accept path adds 1 more. The 'connection' listener adds 1 load and 1 store.
  • A server wrap adds 1 instanceof and, in the handshake handler, 1 property load. A client wrap over a given socket adds 2 property loads, and 1 more when the socket has no handle. A 'connect' of a wrapped socket adds 1 property load. new TLSSocket(options) with no socket: 0 new instanceof checks and 1 new property read, pause (read from the diff). The heap numbers above are from the second commit.
  • Not measured: instruction counts and syscall counts. perf, strace and valgrind are not installed in the container.

Self-review: 8 concerns on this part.

  • Addressed: open this as its own PR ahead of node:http2: let tls.Server wrap a socket injected into an Http2SecureServer #38124 (2 concerns), one-line comments, a server wrap over a socket that dials later kept connecting (the wrap-time rule became the handshake rule), the rule for a socket with no handle is pinned by two rows.
  • Kept, with the reason: the client-side wraps. The request behind this PR named tls.connect({ socket }) with no fd to adopt. The review asked whether a client wrap over a foreign stream cuts an upload at end(). It does not: 16,777,216 of 16,777,216 B arrive in two shapes, as in Node.
  • Taken after the second review (third commit): the seven methods decide "stream or options" for the first constructor argument. It adds 1 property read to every new TLSSocket(options). Before it, new tls.TLSSocket(plainObjectStream) with one argument was read as options, as on main.
  • Partly taken: one predicate for all doors. hasStreamMethods is the one rule. Each door keeps its own instanceof Duplex fast path.

Review round (second commit).

  • A 'connect' that the wrapped socket emits after the handshake reported the connection causes no second 'connect' (onUpgradedConnect returns when the socket is not connecting).
  • A 'connect' listener that throws in the handshake handler is reported through reportError, and the rest of the handler runs.
  • net.connect({ socket }) on a plain net.Socket asks for a port again when socket is no stream.Duplex. Only a TLSSocket takes a stream of another implementation.
  • A destroyed socket of an http 'connect' event is not connected (row above). The review proposed an error here. Node v26.3.0 reports none, so the branch gives the result of Node and of main.
  • The TLSSocket constructor sets kAcceptedTLS, and the tests reject on 'error' and 'close'.

Review round (third commit).

  • new tls.TLSSocket(stream) with one argument reads a plain object that has the seven methods as a stream (row above).
  • Left out: a bare end() before the handshake of a server wrap over a socket with no handle, when that socket emits 'drain' before the handshake ends. The drain handler clears connecting with no 'connect', so the end() never runs. Main does the same. The proposed fix (the drain handler leaves connecting alone for a wrap) makes end("bye") and write("bye") arrive twice in a run, because the drain handler flushes the parked write and 'connect' then writes it again.

Not covered.

Tests. node-tls-upgrade.test.ts: 46 pass on this branch. On a release build of main 19 of the first 45 fail, and the 46th fails with main's constructor rule. Every clause of the source diff, removed in turn, fails at least one of them. Also run on the debug build (the directory runs and Node's files on the first commit, the files named below on the second, test/js/node/tls again on the third):

  • test/js/node/tls: 1,206 pass, 8 fail. Four need bun.sh. node-tls-root-certs-concurrent-init and the tls.DEFAULT_CIPHERS test fail the same way on main in this container. Two test-node-extra-ca-certs tests hit the 5 s timeout in the directory run and pass when the file runs alone.
  • test/js/node/net: 293 pass, 3 fail. Two need DNS and fail on main. One hit the 5 s timeout and passes alone.
  • main's node-http2-upgrade.test.mts: 23 pass, 2 todo, unchanged.
  • Node's test-tls-* and test-https-* files: 248 of 250 exit 0. The other two fail the same way on main (one needs the test runner, test-https-timeout.js needs DNS).
  • Second commit: node-tls-connect, node-tls-server, node-tls-wrapped-socket-close and node-tls-duplex-end-verify (788 pass, 11 fail: 4 need bun.sh, tls.DEFAULT_CIPHERS as on main, 6 hit the 5 s timeout in the 4-file run and pass alone), node-http-connect, node-http-with-ws, node-net. Node's files were not run again on it.
  • Third commit, test/js/node/tls in a new container: 1,201 pass, 18 fail. Six are the ones above. Ten secure-context tests fail only because this container sets NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS, and pass without it. One reset test fails in a group run with the second commit's constructor too, and passes alone. The node:tls: bare EOF after TLS 1.3 client-certificate rejection is ECONNRESET instead of end #40653 test passes alone.

A TLS wrap, server-side or client-side, now takes three more inputs.

A stream of another streams implementation. It needs the methods the
TLS engine calls (pause, resume, on, once, write, end, destroy) and no
longer has to be a stream.Duplex. Everything else is refused with a
TypeError, as before.

A connected net.Socket that has no handle, such as the socket of an http
'connect' or 'upgrade' event. tls.connect({ socket }) over it never
started the handshake. A server-side wrap over a net.Socket that has a
transport of its own stayed `connecting` after its handshake.

A TLSSocket that the same tls.Server accepted, when the application
emits it to the server again. The server starts a second session inside
the first, as Node does. Only the 'connection' event of the accept
itself is skipped.

Status: open. The test file passes on the branch and fails with main's src/ (20 of 46 tests).

How I reproduced it, on a release build of main 91e7e3b and on bun 1.4.4, against node v26.3.0:

// 1. A TLS client over the socket of an http 'connect' event: no ClientHello leaves on main.
import http from "node:http";
import net from "node:net";
import tls from "node:tls";
const proxy = http.createServer();
proxy.on("connect", (_req, socket) => {
  socket.write("HTTP/1.1 200 Connection Established\r\n\r\n");
  tls.connect({ socket, rejectUnauthorized: false });
});
proxy.listen(0, "127.0.0.1", () => {
  const raw = net.connect(proxy.address().port, "127.0.0.1");
  raw.write("CONNECT example.test:443 HTTP/1.1\r\nHost: example.test:443\r\n\r\n");
  let bytes = 0;
  raw.on("data", chunk => (bytes += chunk.length));
  // main: 39 (the answer only). This branch and node: the answer and a ClientHello.
  setTimeout(() => (console.log(bytes), process.exit(0)), 500);
});
  1. tls.createServer(...), and in its 'secureConnection' listener server.emit("connection", socket) for the first session. A client that starts a second handshake with tls.connect({ socket: outer }) never gets 'secureConnect' on main. Node and this branch complete it.
  2. new tls.TLSSocket(stream, { isServer: true, key, cert }) with an EventEmitter that has pause, resume, write, end and destroy over a net.Socket: ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE on main, a handshake on node and on this branch.

Walkthrough

TLS client and server upgrade paths now accept supported stream-like transports. Server-side handling updates connection state, routes streams through the stream-level TLS engine when needed, and marks sockets accepted by a TLS server. Tests cover these paths and their error cases.

Changes

TLS Stream Upgrades

Layer / File(s) Summary
Recognize and validate stream inputs
src/js/internal/tls.ts, src/js/node/net.ts, src/js/node/tls.ts
A shared helper checks the required stream methods. TLS constructors and connection validation accept supported stream-like inputs and reject invalid or incomplete values.
Handle server-side upgrade lifecycle
src/js/internal/net/symbols.ts, src/js/node/net.ts, src/js/node/tls.ts
Server-side upgrades classify adoptable and non-adoptable transports. Accepted sockets are tagged with their server. Handshake completion updates the connect event behavior.
Validate upgrade behavior
test/js/node/tls/node-tls-upgrade.test.ts
Tests cover stream adapters, CONNECT tunnels, nested wrapping, connection state, handshake errors, delayed dialing, destroyed sockets, and invalid inputs.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟡 src/js/node/net.ts — A server-side TLSSocket over a handle-less net.Socket subclass that emits its own 'connect' after the handshake now emits 'connect' twice and runs every user 'connect' listener twice. src/js/node/net.ts:1386 calls onUpgradedConnect at handshake completion while connecting is set, but the once('connect', onUpgradedConnect) listener armed at net.ts:2714 stays registered and onUpgradedConnect (net.ts:504-508) has no guard against already having run. Fix: make onUpgradedConnect idempotent (return when !self.connecting) or remove the once('connect') listener when the handshake path emits 'connect', covering both the server path at 1386 and the client path at net.ts:2424.

    Why this was flagged

    Trigger: new tls.TLSSocket(s, { isServer: true }) or tlsServer.emit('connection', s) where s is a net.Socket subclass with its own _read/_write and no _handle that reports 'connect' from its own transport (e.g. a socket that re-emits 'connect' after a reconnect). ::bunUpgradeServerTLS:: at src/js/node/net.ts:2696 runs linkUpgraded, which sets connecting = isSocket && pending = true (net.ts:501); net.ts:2714 arms connection.once('connect', onUpgradedConnect). When the handshake completes first, net.ts:1386 calls onUpgradedConnect, which sets connecting=false and emits 'connect' (net.ts:506-507). The once('connect') listener is still registered; when the transport later emits 'connect', onUpgradedConnect runs again because its only guard is self.destroyed || self[kupgraded] !== connection (net.ts:505), so the TLSSocket emits 'connect' a second time. The base never emitted at handshake time, so this double emission is new. Any user who registered once-only logic on 'connect' runs it twice. Remedy: guard onUpgradedConnect with if (!self.connecting) return.

    Verification: nit — triggers only when a server-side TLSSocket is wrapped over a handle-less net.Socket subclass that later emits its own 'connect' without first emitting 'close'. In src/js/node/net.ts, line 2714 arms connection.once("connect", onUpgradedConnect); the new line 1386 emits 'connect' at handshake completion but never removes that listener, so a later 'connect' runs self.emit("connect") a second time.

A server-side TLS socket over a socket with no handle reports the
connection when its handshake completes. A 'connect' that the wrapped
socket emits after that no longer causes a second 'connect', and a
'connect' listener that throws there is reported like the other
listeners of the handshake handler.

A socket with no handle counts as connected only while it is not
destroyed. That is Node's `connecting || !_handle` for the socket of an
http 'connect' or 'upgrade' event, which has no handle here and keeps
`pending: false` after destroy().

net.connect({ socket }) on a plain net.Socket asks for a port again
when `socket` is no stream.Duplex. Only a TLSSocket takes a stream of
another implementation.

TLSSocket sets kAcceptedTLS in its constructor, so the accept path
stores into an existing slot.

Thanks for the review. fea7797 takes the six optional findings: five as proposed, one in another way.

  1. Second 'connect'. onUpgradedConnect returns when the socket is not connecting. The test with the net.Socket subclass now emits 'connect' on the transport after the handshake and expects no second event.
  2. net.connect({ socket }) on a plain net.Socket. Only a TLSSocket skips the port check for a stream of another implementation. A plain net.Socket keeps main's rule (instanceof Duplex). New test: ERR_MISSING_ARGS.
  3. A 'connect' listener that throws in the handshake handler. The emit has its own try/catch with reportError, like the emits after it. New test: the error reaches 'uncaughtException', and 'secure' still follows.
  4. A destroyed socket of an http 'connect' event. Not taken as proposed. Node v26.3.0 reports no error here (table below). The branch now gives the result of Node and of main: a socket with no handle counts as connected only while it is not destroyed (isNotConnected in net.ts). New test, client wrap and server wrap.
  5. kAcceptedTLS. The TLSSocket constructor sets it to null.
  6. Tests without a failure path. Each awaited socket now rejects on 'error' and on 'close' (nextEvent).

What tls.connect({ socket }) reports within 1 s when socket is already destroyed. The probe also writes one byte.

socket node v26.3.0 main this PR before this PR now
http 'connect' socket, destroy() in the same tick "opening", then 'close', write callback ERR_SOCKET_CLOSED_BEFORE_CONNECTION same as node "open", write callback ERR_SOCKET_CLOSED, then 'close' same as node
http 'connect' socket, after its 'close' "opening", no event same as node "open", no event same as node
net.Socket, both orders as the two rows above same as node same as node same as node
stream.Duplex, after its 'close' "open", no event same as node same as node same as node

So Node leaves a TLS socket over a stream whose 'close' has passed with no event at all. An error there is a change beyond Node, and it is not part of this PR.

🟡 Minor · Recognize method-compatible streams when they are the only argument. · tls.ts:639-656

src/js/node/tls.ts:639-656
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Recognize method-compatible streams when they are the only argument.

When a plain object implements the seven stream methods and is passed as the only TLSSocket argument, isOtherStream is false. The constructor treats the object as options and skips the TLS upgrade at lines 732–741. The handshake cannot start.

Node passes a truthy non-native socket to JSStreamSocket in this case. Include hasStreamMethods(socket) in the stream check.

Suggested fix
-  const isOtherStream = !isDuplex && socket && (options !== undefined || socket instanceof EventEmitter);
+  const isOtherStream =
+    !isDuplex && socket && (options !== undefined || socket instanceof EventEmitter || hasStreamMethods(socket));

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline finding, I checked that fea7797 covers the points from my previous review: the ERR_MISSING_ARGS gate for a plain net.Socket, the try/catch around the handshake-time 'connect' emit, the destroyed check in isNotConnected, kAcceptedTLS initialised in the TLSSocket constructor, and the tests' 'error'/'close' rejection wiring — each is present in the code. I also checked the !self.connecting gate in onUpgradedConnect against a transport 'connect' arriving after the handshake: it returns early, so only one 'connect' is emitted.

Extended reasoning...

The second commit changes src/js/node/net.ts and src/js/node/tls.ts in the places my prior inline comments named, and the test file adds a nextEvent helper plus subprocess and destroyed-socket cases for them. The remaining inline finding is a pre-existing stall the PR only partly fixes, in the TLS-over-stream path of node:net, so a human look is still needed on that path.

Comment thread src/js/node/net.ts
new tls.TLSSocket(stream) with no options read a plain object that has
the stream methods as its options, so no handshake started. Node wraps
it. The constructor now asks hasStreamMethods first, whether or not
options follow. An argument that is no stream is still refused when
options follow it or when it is an EventEmitter, and is read as the
options otherwise.

f160ba8 answers the two findings on fea7797.

new tls.TLSSocket(stream) with one argument (coderabbit). Taken. The constructor now reads its first argument as a stream when it has the seven methods, whether or not options follow. Node v26.3.0 completes a handshake for this input. Main and the earlier commits read the object as options, and nothing happened. The cost is one property read for each new TLSSocket(options). New test: "new TLSSocket(stream) with no options wraps a plain object that has the methods of a stream".

'drain' before the handshake ends (claude). Verified, and left for a separate change. Main does the same. What I measured with a net.Socket subclass that has no handle, highWaterMark: 1, and an asynchronous _write:

Before the handshake main this PR
end("bye") or write("bye"), with or without a 'drain' first arrives arrives
end() with no data, no 'drain' first never ends ends (the 'connect' this PR adds)
end() with no data, a 'drain' first never ends never ends

I ran the second proposed fix (the drain handlers leave connecting alone for a wrap). The bare end() then ends, but end("bye") and write("bye") arrive twice (byebye). _write parks a write that is made while connecting and also registers a 'connect' listener that writes it. The drain handler flushes that parked chunk itself, and the later 'connect' writes it again. The first proposal emits the same late 'connect'. A fix needs one owner for the parked write, in the drain handler that every socket shares, so it is not a change to add at the end of this PR.

I re-reviewed the two follow-up commits and found no new bugs; the earlier inline points are addressed in code, but since this reshapes the TLS wrap and accept paths in node:tls/node:net, a human look is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • The third commit's TLSSocket first-argument classification (src/js/node/tls.ts constructor): hasStreamMethods is now consulted before the options fallback, and the ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE branch only fires for a truthy non-stream when options follow or it is an EventEmitter; checked that primitives (string/number/symbol) do not throw inside hasStreamMethods and still fall through to the pre-existing options path.
  • Confirmed in code that the earlier threads landed: kAcceptedTLS is initialised in the constructor, the handshake-handler onUpgradedConnect call is isolated with reportError, the net.connect({ socket }) bypass is keyed on bunTlsSymbol, and the new tests reject on 'error'/'close'.
  • Note the PR description's "Not taken" bullet (single-argument plain-object stream still read as options) is now stale relative to the third commit, which wraps it.
Extended reasoning...

The change spans four built-in JS modules under src/js/ (net.ts, tls.ts, internal/tls.ts, internal/net/symbols.ts) plus one test file, widening which streams a TLSSocket can wrap, changing when a handle-less net.Socket is treated as connected, and replacing the tls.Server 'connection' skip heuristic with a per-socket kAcceptedTLS tag. It touches the TLS session establishment surface (which sockets get a server-side TLS layer and when 'connect' is reported), which is security-relevant even though no credential or verification logic changes. No CODEOWNER covers these paths, and the hunt ran dry with no findings, but the Node-compat edge cases (destroyed tunnel sockets, drain clearing connecting before the handshake, duck-typed streams) are subtle enough that a maintainer should weigh them, so defer rather than approve.

Still open from earlier reviews (1):

  • Unresolved: 1 minor or pre-existing.

228cc19 merges main into the branch. The CI pipeline refuses a branch that does not contain b7efd52, and that is why build 130718 failed at its first step. The merge has no conflict, and node-tls-upgrade.test.ts passes 46 of 46 on a debug build of the merged tree.

On the last review: the description is current for the third commit (the "Not taken" bullet is replaced), and the thread about 'drain' before the handshake is resolved with the measurements above.
