Problem

  • Since 1.4.0, tls: { minVersion: "TLSv1.3" } on fetch, Bun.serve, Bun.listen and Bun.connect throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE TLSOptions.minVersion must be a number.
  • A number that is not a protocol code is ignored. 0x10303 is applied as TLS 1.2.
  • Causes: both keys are b.i32 (SSLConfig.bindv2.ts:62). us_ssl_ctx_build_raw drops the setter results and narrows to uint16_t (openssl.c:1297).

Fix

  • A converter for the two members (BunIDLConvertTLSProtocolVersion.h) accepts node's four names and the four protocol codes. undefined and 0 mean unset. Other values throw ERR_TLS_INVALID_PROTOCOL_VERSION.
  • us_ssl_ctx_build_raw fails when BoringSSL rejects a bound. Bun.serve throws where it cannot apply a bound: below "TLSv1.3" with http3: true, or different on a later SNI entry.
  • Verified: 9 new tests, test/js/node/tls/fetch-tls-cert.test.ts and three more files (Notes).
  • Self-reviewed: 34 concerns raised, 33 addressed. Not done: node:tls still passes protocol codes, not names, to the native side.

Background

  • Every native TLS option parser uses one generated dictionary, TLSOptions. A member's converter runs for each.
  • Considered a union resolved in Rust: it changes the extern struct layout. The converter does not, and is free when keys are absent.
  • Notes has two questions for a maintainer.

Downsides

  • Numbers that are not a protocol code now throw. A BigInt equal to a code worked and throws.
  • A version name alone makes a TLS config: Bun.serve then starts https with no certificate.
  • Cost: +2,065 bytes of text, +4 instructions and 1 branch per SSL_CTX build.
Notes

Questions for a maintainer

  1. Place of the rule. It is a C++ IDL converter behind a bindgenv2 type for these two members (TLSMinVersion / TLSMaxVersion, exported from src/codegen/bindgenv2/lib.ts). The other TLSOptions value rules (serverName, ecdhCurve) are Rust, in SSLConfig::from_generated. The converter keeps ExternSSLConfig and src/jsc/generated.rs unchanged and costs nothing when the keys are absent. For a Rust rule the two members must reach Rust as a string or a number. That changes the layout of the extern struct and puts the rule in SSLConfig.rs. Commit 1 stays as it is in that case.
  2. Numbers in the type. The runtime still parses 0 and 0x0301 to 0x0304, because node:tls, node:https and nodeClientTlsToNative pass protocol codes. The .d.ts has only the four names, like @types/node. To add the codes to the type later does not break users. To remove them does.

#44618

#44618 is merged, and this branch has main merged in. It did not change how the two keys are parsed, and us_ssl_ctx_build_raw still dropped the setter results, so this PR is still needed. On main, set_default_ciphers raises ssl_min_version to TLS 1.3 for a config without ciphers when tls.DEFAULT_CIPHERS has no TLS 1.2 suite. So the SNI check compares the values that the entries set, not that field. A row of the SNI test covers it.

Where each check lives

  1. The dictionary member. SSLConfig.bindv2.ts selects the bindgenv2 type, whose converter is src/jsc/bindings/BunIDLConvertTLSProtocolVersion.h. It is the only place where a string can be admitted, and every parser of the dictionary passes it: fetch, Bun.FetchSession, Bun.serve (object, SNI array, top-level keys), Bun.listen, Bun.connect and the other callers of SSLConfig::from_js. The extern type stays int32_t.
  2. The sink. us_ssl_ctx_build_raw is the one place that sees the narrowing and a producer that does not use the dictionary. No producer carries a user value past the dictionary today. The check keeps a bound from being dropped if one appears, or if BoringSSL stops accepting a version that the converter accepts. *err stays NONE, as for the certificate and key exits, so callers report the queued SSL_R_UNKNOWN_SSL_VERSION. sslCtxBuildWithProtocolVersions in bun:internal-for-testing builds a context from raw bounds, because no option value reaches this code with an invalid bound any more.

The rule

  • undefined means the default, as for every member of the dictionary. Any other value must be a version name. 0 and the four codes are added for the transport from node:tls.
  • null throws. In node's createSecureContext it means the default. Here a tls object whose only key is a null bound would parse to nothing, and an empty tls object means no TLS for Bun.connect, Bun.listen and Bun.serve.
  • "", false and NaN throw. The rule of tls.Server (a falsy bound is unset) is not used.
  • The message is node's %j form: "TLSv9" is not a valid minimum TLS protocol version, "" is not a valid ... for the empty string, 1 is not a valid maximum TLS protocol version. A string is printed as JSON. A number is printed as it is. Other types use the helper that other argument errors use. There node prints JSON for an object and throws a different TypeError for a BigInt.

Behaviour changes

  • Names are accepted on the native TLS options.
  • A number that is not 0 or a code throws. Before, it was ignored, and 0x10303 was applied as TLS 1.2.
  • A BigInt throws. 0n and 0x0301n to 0x0304n were converted by the i32 member and applied in 1.4.0 to 1.4.2. This is the only value that worked and now throws. Node rejects a BigInt.
  • null, booleans, objects and symbols threw ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE. They throw ERR_TLS_INVALID_PROTOCOL_VERSION now.
  • For fetch the promise rejects. For Bun.serve, Bun.listen and Bun.connect the call throws.
  • A name is a TLS option like the others. Bun.serve({ tls: { minVersion: "TLSv1.3" } }) with no certificate starts an https server without one (main does this for a numeric code and for other keys such as ciphers and passphrase). Bun.connect({ tls: { minVersion: "TLSv1.3" } }) is TLS with that floor. server.reload({ tls }) accepts a bound and does not apply it (main: the same for a code).
  • Bun.serve with http3: true and a maxVersion below "TLSv1.3" throws HTTP/3 requires TLS 1.3, but 'tls.maxVersion' is lower. Before, the cap bound the TCP listener only: QUIC on the same port still used TLS 1.3, and the capped listener sent alt-svc: h3.
  • In a tls: [...] array, Bun.serve throws SNI tls object must have the same 'minVersion' as the first tls object when a later entry sets a minVersion or maxVersion that differs from the first entry, also through server.reload. A later entry must leave the two options out or repeat what the first entry sets. Before, a code there was parsed and not applied.

Not included

  • node:tls. An invalid tls.DEFAULT_MIN_VERSION / tls.DEFAULT_MAX_VERSION is still ignored, where node throws from createSecureContext(). An earlier commit of this branch checked the defaults and the options of https.createServer(). It is left out. tls: consolidate the open TLS fixes (both engines, node:tls, node:https, WebSocket, SQL) #44618 now validates the https options.
  • The flags --tls-min-v1.x / --tls-max-v1.x and tls.DEFAULT_MIN_VERSION / tls.DEFAULT_MAX_VERSION reach node:tls only. On main a407eae with --tls-min-v1.3, Bun.serve, Bun.listen and https.createServer() still accept a client that offers only TLS 1.2. tls.createServer() refuses it, and node v26.3.0 refuses it on both of its servers. The docs in this PR state the limit for the native options. node:https: apply the full TLS option set when creating a Server #33054 has a fix for the https server that did not reach main.
  • Other node option forms on a native tls object. secureProtocol: "TLSv1_2_method" on Bun.serve and Bun.listen is ignored (TLS 1.3 is negotiated), and as the only key on Bun.connect the connection is not TLS. A negative sessionTimeout is accepted where tls.createSecureContext throws.
  • Types. These TLSOptions members are still untyped: allowPartialTrustChain, sessionTimeout, sigalgs and ecdhCurve (in types: declare allowPartialTrustChain, sessionTimeout, sigalgs and ecdhCurve on Bun.TLSOptions #38134).
  • A version range per SNI entry. The TLS version is negotiated with the range of the first entry, before SNI selects an entry. So this PR rejects a different bound on a later entry and documents the rule. To apply a bound per entry, the SNI switch (us_ssl_apply_selected_ctx) would have to enforce it, as it does for requestCert and rejectUnauthorized. tls.Server#addContext is not changed: node v26.3.0 also ignores the version range of an SNI context.
  • A tls object whose only key is minVersion: 0 or minVersion: undefined is still an empty tls object, as on main.
  • An inverted range is accepted, as in node, and every handshake then fails. A maxVersion below "TLSv1.2" with no minVersion is such a range. This PR documents it.
  • test/js/node/tls/fetch-tls-cert.test.ts has a todo ("Request cert from TLS1.2 client that doesn't have one") whose comment named this option as the blocker. The blocker is gone and the test stays todo. It gets ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE on main and EPROTO here, where node gives ERR_SSL_SSLV3_ALERT_HANDSHAKE_FAILURE. The comment now records that.

Measurements (release builds of main a407eae and of this branch with that main merged in, gdb single-step counts, every count repeated and equal)

  • Generated code: 5 changed lines in 2 of the 14 generated files, isUndefined default branches unchanged (diff -r of the bindgenv2 output).
  • Parse with minVersion / maxVersion absent: 14,932 -> 14,928 instructions, 1,990 -> 1,990 conditional branches (convertDictionary<SSLConfig>, 6th call).
  • Parse with the codes 0x0303 / 0x0304: 14,971 -> 14,931 instructions. With "TLSv1.2" / "TLSv1.3": 15,015, which is 84 more than the codes.
  • Allocations per parse: 23 mi_malloc / 23 mi_free absent, 21 / 21 codes, 21 / 21 names (main: 23 / 23 and 21 / 21). Syscalls 0.
  • Release binary text: +2,065 bytes, data and bss unchanged. convertDictionary<SSLConfig> +186, the two converter functions 924 and 852, the test hook 605 (+23 in its dispatcher). ServerConfig::from_js 16,572 -> 16,256 and us_ssl_ctx_build_raw 7,887 -> 6,174: with the new checks the optimizer lays both out differently, and it no longer inlines us_install_ca_buffers (1,286) and DH_free (94) into the second.
  • ExternSSLConfig: the same on main and here. The two members stay int32_t, and the generated code differs only in the converter type and one include.
  • us_ssl_ctx_build_raw per build, instructions inside the function: 309 -> 313 and 47 -> 48 conditional branches for bounds 0/0, 331 -> 331 and 50 -> 51 for 0x0303 / 0x0304 (Bun.listen with a certificate). 16 calls out on both.
  • Bun.serve config parse: nothing is added when http3 is not set and tls is not an array. The HTTP/3 check is 7 instructions and 1 conditional branch (read from the disassembly of ServerConfig::from_js). The SNI check is at most 4 integer compares for each entry after the first, on the two parsed values.
  • Host functions: 69 -> 70 in src/js/internal-for-testing.ts. 0 added in *.classes.ts.

Tests

  • New tests, 9 in 4 files: test/js/node/tls/fetch-tls-cert.test.ts (2: every accepted and rejected value through new Bun.FetchSession({ tls }) with the message text, and fetch handshakes that include "TLSv1", "TLSv1.1" and a bound as the only key), test/js/bun/http/bun-serve-args.test.ts (4), test/js/bun/net/tcp-server.test.ts (1), test/js/node/tls/tls-connect-socket-churn.test.ts (2).
  • Without the fix: on a release build of main a407eae the seven tests in the first three files fail and every other test in those files passes. The two in tls-connect-socket-churn.test.ts need the debug-only bun:internal-for-testing. The SSL_CTX build test fails when only the openssl.c hunk is reverted.
  • The tests are in small files for the same options: fetch-tls-cert.test.ts already passes maxVersion to fetch, tcp-server.test.ts has the other tls option checks of Bun.listen, bun-serve-args.test.ts has the other HTTP/3 argument check. They are not in fetch.tls.test.ts, socket.test.ts, serve.test.ts or ssl-ctx-cache.test.ts, which tls: consolidate the open TLS fixes (both engines, node:tls, node:https, WebSocket, SQL) #44618 changed while this PR was open.
  • test/integration/bun-types/bun-types.test.ts passes (22 tests). The fixture accepts the names, assigns the two keys to node's SecureContextOptions, and rejects "TLSv9" and a number. bun check in test/ reports the same 5 errors in 4 files as on main.
  • The new tests pass with BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1.
  • Also run on the debug build of this branch: 25 of node's own tests for TLS versions, contexts and SNI (test-tls-min-max-version.js, test-tls-cli-min-version-*.js, test-tls-cli-max-version-*.js, test-tls-getprotocol.js, test-tls-basic-validations.js, test-https-agent-*.js and others) pass. node-tls-context.test.ts (83), ssl-ctx-cache.test.ts (18) and error-code-messages.test.ts (12) pass.
  • On the debug build in the container used here, socket.test.ts has 1 failure of 185 (should not call drain before handshake) and fetch.tls.test.ts has 1 of 66 (trusts a self-issued certificate without keyCertSign only when ca holds that very certificate). Both fail in the same way on a release build of main a407eae without this PR.
  • "Earlier releases ignored the key" is from the source at the bun-v1.3.13 tag, where the dictionary has no such key. That release was not run.

Self-review

A review of the first version of this branch raised 34 concerns. 33 are addressed. Most of them asked for the same things: leave out the node:tls / node:https commit, print node's quoted message, build the bindgenv2 type so that it survives #43945, correct the docs and the typing, reject the HTTP/3 case, and add handshake tests for "TLSv1" and "TLSv1.1" and tests where a bound is the only key. One is not done:

  • To pass the names from node:tls to the native side and delete the numeric transport.

…SL rejects

us_ssl_ctx_build_raw dropped the result of SSL_CTX_set_min_proto_version
and SSL_CTX_set_max_proto_version, and passed an int to a uint16_t
parameter. A bound that BoringSSL does not know was ignored. A value
outside uint16_t was applied as a different bound: 0x10303 became
TLS 1.2 and 65536 became unset.

The build now checks the range before the cast and fails when a setter
fails. *err stays NONE, as for the certificate and key exits, so callers
report the queued SSL_R_UNKNOWN_SSL_VERSION.

sslCtxBuildWithProtocolVersions in bun:internal-for-testing builds a
context from raw bounds, so the check has a test that does not depend
on which values the option parser lets through.

…ptions

The TLSOptions dictionary typed minVersion and maxVersion as an i32. A
name such as "TLSv1.3" has thrown ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE since 1.4.0.
Releases before 1.4.0 had no such key and ignored it. A number that is
not a protocol code was accepted and had no effect.

The two members now have their own converter. It accepts "TLSv1",
"TLSv1.1", "TLSv1.2" and "TLSv1.3", the four TLS1_*_VERSION codes that
node:tls passes, and null, undefined or 0 for unset. Any other value
throws ERR_TLS_INVALID_PROTOCOL_VERSION. The message is node's: a string
is printed as JSON, a number as it is. The member is still an int32_t on
the native side, so the extern layout and the Rust code do not change.

One form that worked now throws: a BigInt equal to an accepted code (0n,
0x0301n to 0x0304n). The i32 member converted it. Node rejects a BigInt,
and the type of the two options is a union of the four names.

The rule is in the member's converter, so every parser of the dictionary
gets it: fetch, Bun.FetchSession, Bun.serve, Bun.listen, Bun.connect and
the other callers of SSLConfig::from_js.

Bun.serve with http3: true now throws for a maxVersion below "TLSv1.3".
QUIC has no lower version, so the cap bound the TCP listener only.

The bindgenv2 type comes from the factory that makes the loose integer
types. It has no members of its own to keep in step with them.

Status: the change is ready for review.

How the problem was reproduced: a node:tls server on loopback that reports the protocol it negotiated, and fetch(url, { tls: { ca, ...option }, keepalive: false }) for each option.

option bun 1.4.2 this branch
minVersion: "TLSv1.3" ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE (must be a number) negotiated TLSv1.3
maxVersion: "TLSv1.2" ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE (must be a number) negotiated TLSv1.2
maxVersion: 0x0303 negotiated TLSv1.2 negotiated TLSv1.2
minVersion: 0x0305 negotiated TLSv1.3 (bound ignored) ERR_TLS_INVALID_PROTOCOL_VERSION
maxVersion: 1 negotiated TLSv1.3 (bound ignored) ERR_TLS_INVALID_PROTOCOL_VERSION
maxVersion: -1 negotiated TLSv1.3 (bound ignored) ERR_TLS_INVALID_PROTOCOL_VERSION
minVersion: "TLSv9" ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE (must be a number) ERR_TLS_INVALID_PROTOCOL_VERSION

The same checks are in the new tests for fetch, Bun.serve, Bun.listen and Bun.connect.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the converter in src/jsc/bindings/BunIDLConvertTLSProtocolVersion.h for NaN, +/-Infinity, negatives and non-integer doubles — all fall through the exact-match loop and throw ERR_TLS_INVALID_PROTOCOL_VERSION, and both view()/value() calls are followed by RETURN_IF_EXCEPTION. The uint16_t range check in us_ssl_ctx_build_raw compares in int before casting, so no wraparound reaches BoringSSL.

Extended reasoning...

Inline findings are posted (SNI non-first entry bounds silently dropped, null now meaning unset turns off TLS, and a test classifier nit), plus one verified finding not posted, so approval is off the table. This note records the adversarial-number and exception-check paths in the new IDL converter and the openssl.c range check that were examined and found sound.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🔴 src/runtime/server/ServerConfig.rs — A server operator who sets minVersion or maxVersion on a non-first SNI entry gets a running server that silently ignores that bound instead of an error. The converter accepts the name, the entry is pushed to args.sni at ServerConfig.rs:1257, and SSL_set_SSL_CTX in the SNI switch never changes the negotiated version range, so the bound is never applied. Fix: reject a bound on a non-first SNI entry that is set and differs from the first entry's (ServerConfig.rs:1238-1258 and Listener::add_server_name at Listener.rs:765 for Bun.listen's addServerName), rather than documenting it as inert; the docs and JSDoc call this accepted, but a security floor that is parsed and dropped is a silent downgrade the base never allowed for names.

    Why this was flagged

Input: Bun.serve({ tls: [{ ...certA, serverName: "a.test" }, { ...certB, serverName: "b.test", minVersion: "TLSv1.3" }], fetch }). The new converter in src/jsc/bindings/BunIDLConvertTLSProtocolVersion.h:43 accepts the name, SSLConfig::from_generated stores ssl_min_version at src/runtime/socket/SSLConfig.rs:184, and the entry is pushed to args.sni at src/runtime/server/ServerConfig.rs:1257 with no check. The http3 check at ServerConfig.rs:1282-1286 only reads args.ssl_config (the first entry). The SNI switch at packages/bun-usockets/src/crypto/openssl.c:3045 is SSL_set_SSL_CTX, which copies only the certificate; the version range is fixed per-SSL at SSL_new from the first entry's context and was already negotiated before the SNI callback. So b.test still accepts TLS 1.2 clients. On the base branch the same input threw ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE for the string, so no user could end up with a config that looks enforced and is not. The docs and JSDoc state that later entries use the first entry's range, but nothing in the code fails closed.

Verification: src/runtime/server/ServerConfig.rs:1238-1258 pushes every non-first entry into args.sni; nothing compares ssl_min_version/ssl_max_version to the first entry. At handshake the only application is us_ssl_apply_selected_ctx (packages/bun-usockets/src/crypto/openssl.c:3044-3052), which does SSL_set_SSL_CTX. On the base, minVersion: "TLSv1.3" on such an entry threw ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE.

❌ @robobun, your commit a1fa15f has 2 failures in Build #125986 (All Failures):

That installs a local version of the PR into your bun-44901 executable, so you can run:

…SNI entry

A `tls` object whose only key was `minVersion: null` parsed to nothing,
and an empty `tls` object means no TLS for Bun.connect, Bun.listen and
Bun.serve. `null` throws ERR_TLS_INVALID_PROTOCOL_VERSION now, as it
threw ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE before the two members took names.

In a `tls: [...]` array the TLS version is negotiated with the range of
the first entry, before SNI selects an entry. Bun.serve throws when a
later entry sets a minVersion or maxVersion that differs from the first
entry, where the bound was parsed and not applied.

The handshake tests compare the exact error code. The two SSL_CTX tests
move to tls-connect-socket-churn.test.ts.

On the finding about a bound on a later entry of a tls array (it is outside the diff, so it has no thread): changed in 48f5275.

  • Bun.serve now throws SNI tls object must have the same 'minVersion' as the first tls object when an entry after the first sets a minVersion or maxVersion that differs from the first entry. server.reload uses the same parser. Before, the bound was parsed and not applied. bun 1.4.2 does that for a numeric code.
  • A later entry can leave the two options out, or repeat what the first entry sets. The comparison is on what the entries set, so minVersion: "TLSv1.2" on a later entry throws when the first entry has no minVersion. The docs, the JSDoc and the new test say so.
  • Not changed: tls.Server#addContext. Listener::add_server_name gets a native SecureContext from node:tls, and node v26.3.0 also ignores the version range of an SNI context. A client that offers only TLS 1.2 completes the handshake with a context created with minVersion: "TLSv1.3".
  • Not in this PR: a version range for each entry. For that, the SNI switch (us_ssl_apply_selected_ctx) has to enforce the bound, as it does for requestCert and rejectUnauthorized.

Declare the numeric protocol codes accepted at runtime.

The TLS converter accepts 0 and 0x0301 through 0x0304 for both bounds. These declarations reject those valid values in TypeScript. Add the supported numeric literals to both property types. The accepted-code contract is shown by the converter and the new validation tests.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Commit 48f5275 addresses both points from my earlier review: BunIDLConvertTLSProtocolVersion.h now rejects null (non-number, non-string falls through to ERR_TLS_INVALID_PROTOCOL_VERSION), so tls: { minVersion: null } no longer collapses into a no-TLS config, and the handshake tests in tcp-server.test.ts / fetch-tls-cert.test.ts compare exact error codes. Beyond the inline finding on the SNI bound comparison, I also checked the us_ssl_ctx_build_raw change in packages/bun-usockets/src/crypto/openssl.c — the bounds are compared as int before the uint16_t cast and a rejected setter fails the build rather than falling back to defaults, so that path fails closed.

Extended reasoning...

The PR changes how TLSOptions.minVersion/maxVersion are parsed (new bindgenv2 types and a C++ IDL converter), adds a range check and fail-closed path in usockets' SSL_CTX build, and adds two Bun.serve validations for SNI arrays and http3. It touches TLS configuration, a security-sensitive surface, and the latest commit resolved the silent-downgrade issue flagged in the prior review. One nit remains inline about the SNI comparison treating an unset first-entry bound as 0, so a human look is still warranted and approval is not appropriate.

On the suggestion to add 0 and 0x0301 to 0x0304 to the type of minVersion / maxVersion: not changed.

The runtime parses the codes because node:tls and node:https pass them to the native side. They are not a documented way to set the option, and @types/node has only the four names. The PR body leaves this to the maintainers (question 2 in the notes). To add the codes to the type later does not break users. To remove them does.

A default cipher list with no TLS 1.2 suite raises ssl_min_version of a
config that has no ciphers of its own. The SNI check compared that field,
so a later entry without ciphers was rejected for a minVersion it did not
set. The check now compares the parsed option values.
