Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the second fixture's Atomics.notify(shared, 0) - alive - 1 arithmetic — every context (dropped and live) registers exactly one waiter, so the subtraction isolates wakes from collected contexts correctly; and the WeakRefs are created in the setup() job, so the KeepDuringJob list does not pin the dropped contexts across the later fullGC().
Extended reasoning...
The change touches only test/js/node/vm/vm.test.ts, loosening two subprocess fixtures so that only contexts proven collected via WeakRef.deref() are checked for cancelled FinalizationRegistry jobs and Atomics.waitAsync waiters; no runtime source is modified and no security-sensitive surface is involved. A confirmed inline finding covers the loss of the exact-count leak check (up to three of four dropped contexts may survive fullGC() and the suite still passes), which conflicts with the repository's rule against attributing test failures to the conservative stack scanner without a heap-snapshot proof on the affected binary, which the author states was not obtained. The arithmetic and WeakRef timing in the new fixtures are otherwise consistent, so the remaining question is a judgment call for a maintainer.

The two tests of the deferred work of a dead node:vm context expected one fullGC() to collect all four dropped contexts. The collector scans the stack conservatively, so it can keep one of them alive, and then that context's cleanup job or waiter is legitimately still there. Each fixture now holds a WeakRef to every dropped context. It checks the cancelled work only for the contexts the collection collected, and it requires that at least one was collected.

I reviewed the latest push and found no new bugs; since the change deliberately accepts contexts that only the stack scan kept, which the repo's review rules say never to blame, whether that trade-off is acceptable is a maintainer call and a human look is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
- The walker in heapPathsToKeptContexts against the GCDebugging snapshot layout (7-field nodes, 4-field edges, 3-field roots, root node 0): the own-array and WeakRef skips, the root edge skipped only when its reason is Output, and Strong/protect holds covered separately through heapStats().protectedObjectTypeCounts.
- Ordering: both fixtures now take the snapshot after the turn in which the cleanup jobs / waiter resolutions run, so the snapshot's own sweep cannot be what cancels the work under test.
- The dropped property tagging: no other property in src/js starts with "dropped", so sandboxes cannot be mis-indexed; wokenInCollectedContexts and wokeExactlyTheKeptContexts can each fail independently.
- A kept sandbox reached by the snapshot's own conservative scan would print a path and fail loudly rather than pass vacuously.
Extended reasoning...
The change is confined to test/js/node/vm/vm.test.ts: it rewrites two spawned -e fixtures so that dropped vm contexts surviving fullGC() are tolerated when a bun:jsc heap snapshot shows no heap path to them, and adds a shared heap-walker source string interpolated into both. It touches no production code and no security-sensitive surface. The latest commit changes the walker to skip only the Output-reason root edge and adds the protected-object count check, and moves the snapshot after the jobs' turn, so the two inline concerns from the previous run are addressed in code. What keeps this from an approve is that the fix's premise (a context kept only by a conservative stack word) is explicitly the thing the repository's CLAUDE.md item 15 and REVIEW.md say to never accept without proof on the failing binary, and the PR description states that proof was not obtained for the two aarch64 builds; that policy judgment belongs to a maintainer.
A dropped context that a collection kept was accepted with no check, so the two tests no longer failed for a context that the heap retains. Each fixture now holds the sandboxes of the kept contexts until it has seen which work was cancelled. Then it takes a heap snapshot and searches for a path from a root to each kept context. A context that only a stack word held has no path. A path fails the test and is printed, and so does a Strong or a protect() on a context's global. The Atomics test also records which dropped contexts had their wait resolved, and requires that exactly the kept ones did.

deadContextCleanups: 5, expected0. One stayed marked: 5 callbacks.setImmediatecallback had in a local.Fix
Atomics.waitAsynctest below assumes the same) keep aWeakRefto every dropped context and check the cancelled work only for the collected ones, of which there must be one.bun bd test test/js/node/vm/vm.test.ts(309 pass, 0 fail). Both tests still fail on 367d939, before Cancel a dead realm's deferred work at the end of the collection that found it dead #44279.Background
sanitizeStackForVMzeroes only below the stack pointer, so a stale word in a live frame stays.WeakRefto the sandbox is cleared exactly when the realm dies.Notes
Reproduction on main (x64, canary 71d0d43), no debugger. Take the fixture as it was before this PR and change three things. Add
let handedOver;at module scope. Endsetup()withhandedOver = contexts[1];. Replace the secondawait nextTurn();with:It prints
deadContextCleanups: 5on every run. After the callback returns, no variable and no heap object references that context. WithhandedOver = undefined; resolve();alone it prints0.Heap snapshot of that run, taken right after
fullGC(): the kept sandbox has one incoming edge, from its ownNodeVMGlobalObject, and no root entry. The only root entry of that global isOutput, the WeakMap entry keyed by the sandbox. Its other holders (structures, functions, its lexical environment, its proxy) have no path from a root.gdb on the same binary at that
fullGC().rbp-560andrbp-544in the frame ofJSC::MicrotaskQueue::drainWithUseCallOnEachMicrotask. Neither was written since that turn's microtask drain began. Before the drain, the call of thesetImmediatecallback used those addresses.sanitizeStackForVMcall after the drain began runs with a stack pointer 1,256 bytes below those words, andVM::m_lastStackTopis 296 bytes below them. It zeroes nothing.Not verified. I could not run the two failing PR binaries: their artifacts are not reachable from my environment, and it cannot run aarch64 code. So the stale word that kept a context of the unmodified fixture in builds 122945 and 122554 is not identified. be2d624 (#44398) changes nothing that the main thread's heap can observe, and its merge base passes on the same lane. With this PR the fixture checks the heap snapshot on whichever binary keeps a context. If the heap holds it there, the test fails and prints the path.
What the two tests report (same fixtures, one change each, canary 71d0d43):
contextsTheHeapKeeps: []contextsTheHeapKeeps: []context 1: <root> -> GlobalObject -> Objectcontext 3: <root> -> GlobalObject -> Structure -> NodeVMGlobalObject -> ObjectwokenInCollectedContexts: 4wokenInCollectedContexts: 3The snapshot comes last.
generateHeapSnapshotForDebugging()collects withHeap::collectNow, which sweeps every block. That destroys the dead globals, and~JSGlobalObjectcancels their work, which is the thing under test. So a fixture holds the kept sandboxes in an array, waits until the jobs or wakes have happened, and takes the snapshot after that. The walk ignores that array. No snapshot is taken when every context was collected. On the path that takes it, a release build needs 0.2 s more and a debug ASAN build about 2.5 s more.What the walk does not count. The root edge to the kept global when its reason is the output constraint of a WeakMap (
Outputin every run here, 7 of 7, andWeakMapSpaceis accepted too): it is the WeakMap entry keyed by the sandbox. AStrongor aprotect()on the global would be a second root edge to the same cell, and a snapshot records one reason for each cell, so the fixture readsheapStats().protectedObjectTypeCounts.NodeVMGlobalObjectfor that case. It is absent in all the runs above. I could not produce aStrongon a context's global from JavaScript, so that line is checked by reading only.The fifth row is a real retainer. The newest
vm.createContextcontext is not collected until another one is created: main global, cachedNodeVMGlobalObjectStructure (m_cachedNodeVMGlobalObjectStructure),m_realm, set byJSGlobalObject::finishCreation. Both tests keep the newest context alive on purpose, so they do not hit it.A possible source change, not made here. In the reproduction both stale words lie between
VM::m_lastStackTopand the stack pointer at the entry ofGlobalObject::drainMicrotasks. AsanitizeStackForVMcall there would zero them. It adds a memset to every microtask checkpoint, and I did not build or measure it.Earlier evidence (canary 80de08a). With the address of one dropped sandbox written into the unused stack before the drain of the collecting turn, 58 scanned words still held it at
fullGC():JSC::runInternalMicrotask26,JSC::JSModuleRecord::evaluate10,JSC::MicrotaskQueue::drainWithUseCallOnEachMicrotask8,llint_call_javascript5,JSC::VM::drainMicrotasks4, others 5.Unrelated. In a debug ASAN build the two
SourceTextModules with the same identifier and source keep their own import bindingstests take about 5 s and time out in some runs of the whole file. The file from main does the same (0, 2 and 1 timeouts in three runs).Culprit: #44279 added both tests with the exact counts.
