A Web Worker global now has close(). It marks the running task, and the checkpoint that ends the task (GlobalObject::drainMicrotasks) stops the worker the way process.exit() does: the worker's 'exit' listeners run, then the stop closes the gates that every queued source already reads, so the rest of a message batch, due timers and queued completions are discarded. The calling script runs to the end of its task, so a postMessage() after close() still reaches the parent, and the parent's close event carries code 0. The main thread and node:worker_threads workers do not get close(), as in Node.

Beyond the inline findings, two other concerns were examined and ruled out: the ambient declare function close(): void in packages/bun-types/globals.d.ts follows the existing postMessage precedent on the line above it (also worker-only at runtime, declared as a global), so it introduces no new type/runtime mismatch class; and a parent terminate() landing while the close checkpoint runs is handled, since drainMicrotasks checks endedByException() after the 'exit' listeners and returns before calling WebWorker__close, so the termination path wins.
Extended reasoning...
The change adds a Web-Worker-only global close() across the C++ JSC glue (Worker.cpp, ZigGlobalObject.cpp drainMicrotasks checkpoint, a per-VM flag on JSVMClientData), the Rust WebWorker lifecycle (WebWorker__close, observe_entry refactor), types, docs and tests; it touches no security-sensitive surface. Five verified findings on exit-code and nested-checkpoint semantics are posted inline, so a human look is already signalled; this note only records what else was checked.

src/jsc/web_worker.rs— A worker that calls self.close() from a process 'beforeExit' listener while a top-level await is still pending ends with close code 13, not the 0 the docs and JSDoc promise. The close checkpoint runs inside Process__dispatchOnBeforeExit (BunProcess.cpp:869), fires the 'exit' listeners with code 0 and calls worker.exit(). Control then returns to spin(), where src/jsc/web_worker.rs:990-993 sees the entry promise still Pending with exit_code 0 and overwrites the code with 13. Fix: the 13 branch must not run once the worker chose its own exit (close() or process.exit()), e.g. gate it on !exit_called as the load-error paths at web_worker.rs:880 and :897 already do.Why this was flagged
Trigger: a Web Worker whose entry has an unsettled top-level await and no live handles, with process.on('beforeExit', () => self.close()). The loop at src/jsc/web_worker.rs:953 ends on a dead event loop; line 983 is true so on_before_exit (VirtualMachine.rs:2178) emits beforeExit via Process__dispatchOnBeforeExit (BunProcess.cpp:854). The listener sets workerCloseRequested; BunProcess.cpp:869 calls drainMicrotasks, whose block at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:3178 runs Process__dispatchOnExit with code 0 and then WebWorker__close -> worker.exit() (web_worker.rs:1144 sets exit_called). Back in spin(), line 990 reads the entry promise as Pending and exit_code as 0, so line 993 writes 13; shutdown() reports 13 to the parent (line 1030, 1090). The user observes 'exit' listeners called with 0 but a close event with code 13, contradicting docs/runtime/workers.mdx:232 and the JSDoc at globals.d.ts:1440. process.exit(0) from beforeExit hits the same line on the base, but close() is a new API documented as 0, and the fix is local: skip the 13 overwrite when exit_called is set.
Verification: src/jsc/web_worker.rs:953 ends on a dead loop; line 983 is true, so line 986 calls on_before_exit(). BunProcess.cpp:869 drainMicrotasks() reaches ZigGlobalObject.cpp:3178-3184: Process__dispatchOnExit fires 'exit' with 0, then worker.exit() sets exit_called. web_worker.rs:990-994 then sets exit_code = 13; the guard does not consult exit_called. shutdown() (line 1030, 1088) reports 13.
… errors first A checkpoint beneath script (a nested wait in a host function) is not the end of the task, so the flag waits for the outer one. What the closing task left uncaught (an entry that threw, a rejected promise) is reported before the 'exit' listeners, as when the task ends on its own. A 'beforeExit' listener that calls close() keeps code 0 instead of 13.

The points from the previous round (the !vm.entryScope gate for nested checkpoints, handle_rejected_promises before the stop, observe_entry running ahead of the 'exit' listeners, and the close-code assertion in the terminate() test) are addressed in the new push. Beyond the two inline findings, I also checked the path where a process 'exit' listener throws after self.close(): endedByException() after WebWorker__close in GlobalObject::drainMicrotasks routes the exception through reportUncaughtExceptionAtEventLoop, so that error is not lost.
Extended reasoning...
The follow-up commit reworked the close checkpoint in src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp and WebWorker__close in src/jsc/web_worker.rs in line with the prior review; the remaining inline findings concern close() consumed from a checkpoint that is not the task-ending one and the exit code when the entry throws after close(). No security-sensitive surface is touched; the ruled-out note covers only the throwing 'exit' listener path examined this run.

…keep a reported entry error's code A handler the loop runs outside a task's checkpoint (an 'unhandledRejection' listener) can call close(); the worker loop now takes that request between turns. The load-error path keeps the code an entry error it already reported chose. Test messages no longer depend on the error text's source snippet.

… flag inline between loop turns GlobalObject::drainMicrotasks forces `endedByException` inline. Its use in the cold close() block made clang outline it, and every checkpoint on every VM then built the closure's capture block on the stack. The worker loop reads the close() request flag through its address, one load a read, in place of three calls a turn. A close() that no checkpoint followed gets its checkpoint there: the listener's ticks and microtasks run, and the one path in drainMicrotasks carries the close out. Tests: the uncaught errors of the closing task run in a child process and match the `error: boom` line. The 'unhandledRejection' listener test queues an immediate and a microtask: the immediate must not run, the microtask must. New tests for port.close() in its own handler, a synchronous wait beneath the script, and process.exit(0) in a 'beforeExit' listener. Docs: what runs before the worker stops, the exit code, and the batches that still run.

…id-turn rejection listeners, keep code 0 for a parent's stop during load The loop checks the close request after observe_entry, which runs the 'uncaughtException' listeners, and the event loop runs the checkpoint before the next task batch when an 'unhandledRejection' listener reported mid-turn called close(). A Web Worker its parent terminates while its entry still runs reports close code 0, as after startup.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked a process 'exit' listener that throws during self.close(): WebWorker::close runs the listeners through the same ExitHandler::dispatch_on_exit path that process.exit() in a worker already uses, so how that throw is reported is pre-existing behavior rather than something this change introduces.
Extended reasoning...
This push reworks WebWorker::close in src/jsc/web_worker.rs to drain microtasks and nextTicks after handle_rejected_promises and before the 'exit' listeners, and adds an event_loop.rs re-drain after a mid-turn unhandledRejection listener; one confirmed finding on the uncaughtException-handled checkpoint path in ZigGlobalObject.cpp is posted inline, so this body only records the additional case examined and ruled out.

src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp— A worker that calls self.close() and then throws from a microtask or nextTick that an 'uncaughtException' listener handles still runs the next queued task before stopping. When the drain in the checkpoint ends with a handled exception, endedByException returns 0 at src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:3155 and the early returns at 3163/3168/3175 skip the close block at 3180, so workerCloseRequested stays set and the next task in the batch runs its handler before a later checkpoint consumes the flag. Fix: consult workerCloseRequested on every checkpoint exit that is not a termination, including the reported-exception path, so a close() is carried out at the checkpoint of the task that called it whether or not that checkpoint reported an error. Why this was flagged
Worker source: process.on('uncaughtException', () => postMessage('handled')); self.onmessage = e => { postMessage(e.data); if (e.data === 0) { self.close(); queueMicrotask(() => { throw new Error('x'); }); } }; the parent posts 0..4 before the worker is running, so drainInbox (src/jsc/bindings/webcore/WorkerMessagingProxy.cpp:339) dispatches them in one batch and calls globalObject.drainMicrotasks() after each. In GlobalObject::drainMicrotasks the microtask throws, endedByException (src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:3145-3156) calls reportUncaughtExceptionAtEventLoop, which reaches uncaught_exception (src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:2134); the listener handles it, so the lambda returns 0 and line 3168 returns before the close block at 3180-3185. The flag is still set, drainInbox continues with message 1, whose handler posts 1, and only that message's checkpoint calls WebWorker__close. The parent receives [0, 'handled', 1] instead of [0, 'handled']. The loop-level stop_requested in src/jsc/web_worker.rs:959 only runs after the whole tick, too late for tasks in the same batch.
Verification: endedByException (src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:3145-3156) clears a non-termination exception, calls reportUncaughtExceptionAtEventLoop and returns 0 (3155). Each drain site returns early on that result (3162-3163, 3167-3168, 3174-3175), so control never reaches the close block at 3179-3185 and clientData->workerCloseRequested is left set.
A checkpoint that ends with a handled exception returned before the close block, and the next task of the batch ran. The close block now follows every checkpoint that is not a termination.
