Problem

Fix

  • The job installs mordant at 98f28d7 (cargo install --git --rev) and runs cargo mordant --workspace --keep-going. The if: is restored.
  • The pin moves from [workspace.metadata.dylint] in Cargo.toml to MORDANT_REV and MORDANT_TOOLCHAIN in the job's env:. The rust:mordant scripts call cargo mordant.
  • mordant-baseline.toml is regenerated. Three stale entries are gone (the same three as mordant: drop three baseline entries that no longer have a finding #42698) and two counts are lower. One new unused_pub is recorded: ContextId::raw (src/event_loop/ConcurrentTask.rs:159, from Bun.ModuleGraph: a context per graph for timers and I/O, per-graph CommonJS #42590), which has no caller in the repo.
  • Verified: I ran the job's steps locally, cold. The old baseline gives 1 finding over, the new one gives 0. The mordant check on this PR passes (3m29s on 4e812ca).

Background

  • Mordant is a Rust lint pack. cargo mordant is cargo check with mordant-driver (rustc with the lints linked in) as RUSTC_WORKSPACE_WRAPPER.
  • mordant-driver links one nightly's rustc. That nightly checks this workspace while the lints run, so it must be able to compile it.
  • mordant-baseline.toml is a ratchet: a count per lint and file. Mordant lists each crate that goes over a count in target/mordant/over-baseline.txt. The job fails when that file is not empty.
Notes

Why MORDANT_TOOLCHAIN and not RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN. ci-image-pins.test.ts requires every RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN: nightly-… line in a workflow to equal the channel in rust-toolchain.toml. Mordant's nightly moves with mordant. The job names it on each cargo call (cargo +"$MORDANT_TOOLCHAIN" …). A first draft used RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN and that lint failed. It passes now.

Warm target directory. mordant-driver puts MORDANT_TOML, MORDANT_RUSTFLAGS and its own path in the dep-info. It does not put MORDANT_BASELINE_WRITE or the baseline file there. Measured on this branch:

  • A second cargo mordant --workspace over a warm target/mordant/check finishes in 0.1 s. It replays the cached warnings. It does not write over-baseline.txt again.
  • MORDANT_BASELINE_WRITE=1 over a warm directory changes nothing in mordant-baseline.toml.

CI always starts cold, so the gate is sound there. rust:mordant:baseline now removes target/mordant/check first. .github/workflows/CLAUDE.md records this.

Baseline diff.

Cache. One cache holds the two binaries (about 2 MB stored). It replaces the two dylint caches. The job restores it with actions/cache/restore and saves it with actions/cache/save right after the build. The combined actions/cache saves in a post step that a failed job skips, so a pull request with a finding over the baseline would build mordant again on every push.

Timing. On a 16-core Linux machine: cargo install of mordant 35 s, a cold cargo mordant --workspace 62 s.

A broken manifest. With dylint, a cargo metadata failure made the job check zero crates and pass (#39982). cargo mordant exits 1 in that case: I ran it on a workspace with a duplicate key in a member manifest.

Open pull requests that touch the old job. #42698 is included here. #38418 and #39982 change the dylint invocation, which this PR removes. #42530 edits the cache steps that this PR replaces.

no test proof · iteration 0 · no src or test change; test-proof not applicable

Mordant is no longer a dylint library. It ships its own runner:
cargo-mordant runs cargo check with mordant-driver as the workspace
rustc wrapper. The job now installs mordant at a pinned commit with the
nightly that commit names, and runs cargo mordant --workspace.

The pin moves from [workspace.metadata.dylint] in Cargo.toml to
MORDANT_REV and MORDANT_TOOLCHAIN in the job's env. The nightly is not
spelled RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN because the ci-image-pins source lint holds
every such nightly in a workflow to rust-toolchain.toml's channel.

rust:mordant:baseline removes target/mordant/check first. Cargo does
not rerun the driver for a fresh crate, so a baseline write over a warm
directory records nothing.

The baseline is regenerated with the new revision: three entries with
no finding are gone, two counts are lower, and one unused_pub finding
that arrived while the job was off is recorded.

Status: merged.

  • Requested in chat by @alii, after Move to nightly-2026-09-01 and the matching clippy_utils scarletindustries/mordant#21 and Replace Dylint with cargo-mordant and mordant-driver scarletindustries/mordant#22 merged.
  • Verified locally with the steps of the job, from an empty target/mordant/check: cargo +nightly-2026-09-01 install --locked --git https://github.com/scarletindustries/mordant --rev 98f28d79e37e2003183b874cb152edfc7085934a, then MORDANT_RUSTFLAGS="-A unknown_lints" cargo +nightly-2026-09-01 mordant --workspace --keep-going. With the old baseline, 1 finding is over (ContextId::raw, unused_pub). With the regenerated baseline, target/mordant/over-baseline.txt is absent.
  • CI proof on 566f4e9, both cache paths of the mordant job:
    • Cache miss (attempt 1): built mordant in 60 s, saved the cache before the lint ran, checked 143 crates in 62 s, nothing over the baseline. 3m17s in total.
    • Cache hit (attempt 2): restored the two binaries on a fresh runner, skipped the build and the save, checked 143 crates in 59 s, nothing over the baseline. 2m09s in total.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked: the composite action's rustup override set and the job's cargo +"$MORDANT_TOOLCHAIN" name the same nightly, so the two pin sites cannot disagree; the ci-image-pins lint only matches RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN: lines, so MORDANT_TOOLCHAIN is outside its scope rather than routing around it; and no cargo dylint invocation or [workspace.metadata.dylint] reference remains outside dylint.toml (name kept on purpose) and the docs.

Extended reasoning...

This is a CI-only change (workflow, package.json scripts, Cargo.toml metadata removal, baseline regeneration, workflow docs) for an advisory job, with no src/ changes. The two inline findings cover the developer-path warm-cache issue in package.json and the cache-save-on-success behavior in rust-lints.yml. Separately I confirmed the toolchain pins in .github/actions/rust-lint-setup/action.yml (directory override) and the job's cargo + prefix agree, that test/internal/source-lints/ci-image-pins.test.ts only regexes RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN: so the new env name is not circumventing a check meant for it, and that the dylint removal is complete apart from the deliberately retained dylint.toml filename. The gate step's reliance on target/mordant/over-baseline.txt being written by the new runner was investigated and ruled out earlier in this run. The baseline diff itself (three entries dropped, two counts lowered, one unused_pub added) is data I cannot reproduce here without the pinned mordant build, so a human should confirm the CI mordant check on this PR is green.

@robobun, your commit 566f4e9 is building: #119126

actions/cache saves in a post step that a failed job skips. A pull
request with a finding over the baseline fails the gate step, so it
never saved the cache and built mordant again on every push. Restore
with actions/cache/restore and save with actions/cache/save right after
the build.

The workflow notes now say when a local rust:mordant run over a warm
target/mordant/check is stale, and what to do about it.

LGTM — a self-contained CI change on an advisory job, and the follow-up commit (restore/save split so the binaries are cached before the gate runs) addresses what I raised last time.

What was reviewed:

  • The cargo +"$MORDANT_TOOLCHAIN" calls: +toolchain takes precedence over both the workflow-level RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN and the rustup override set the composite action performs, and rustup propagates it to cargo-mordant's nested cargo call.
  • mordant-baseline.toml: every change removes or lowers a count except one addition; I confirmed ContextId::raw in src/event_loop/ConcurrentTask.rs:159 has no caller, so the new unused_pub entry is real. The rest can only tighten the ratchet.
  • ci-image-pins.test.ts only matches RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN: nightly-… lines, so MORTANT_TOOLCHAIN is not caught by it; no other file still references [workspace.metadata.dylint], so the Cargo.toml removal leaves nothing dangling.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

The PR re-enables the advisory mordant job in /home/claude/bun/.github/workflows/rust-lints.yml, switching it from cargo dylint to mordant's own cargo mordant runner installed with cargo install --git --rev. The pin moves from [workspace.metadata.dylint] in /home/claude/bun/Cargo.toml to two job-level env vars (MORDANT_REV, MORDANT_TOOLCHAIN). The two rust:mordant* scripts in /home/claude/bun/package.json follow, /home/claude/bun/mordant-baseline.toml is regenerated, and /home/claude/bun/.github/workflows/CLAUDE.md documents the new setup. No src/ files change. The second commit (566f4e9) replaced the single actions/cache step with actions/cache/restore plus an explicit actions/cache/save right after the install step, gated on cache-hit != 'true' and keyed on cache-primary-key.

Security risks

None specific to this change. The job installs a third-party lint pack from GitHub, but it is pinned by full commit SHA, runs with contents: read, and the workflow already installed dylint and mordant from external sources before. The action SHAs are unchanged and pinned. No secrets or credentials are touched.

Level of scrutiny

Low-to-moderate. The job is continue-on-error: true, so a wrong toolchain or install failure surfaces as a red advisory check on the PR rather than blocking anything, and the PR itself is the first run of the job. I checked the toolchain precedence question: cargo +X beats the workflow-level RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN: nightly-2026-09-15 and the rustup override set in .github/actions/rust-lint-setup/action.yml, and rustup sets RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN for the launched process so cargo-mordant's nested cargo inherits it. The baseline diff is in the safe direction: three entries dropped, two counts lowered, one entry added that I verified is a real unused public method (no ContextId::raw callers in src/). The ci-image-pins.test.ts regex only matches RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN: nightly-…, so the new MORDANT_TOOLCHAIN line does not trip it. A repo-wide grep shows no remaining consumer of the removed [workspace.metadata.dylint] table.

Other factors

The changed paths are not covered by .github/CODEOWNERS. The only third-party inline thread (coderabbitai at package.json:69) was resolved by a non-author. My prior cache concern was addressed by code in the second commit; my prior warm-target concern was addressed by documenting the tradeoff in the workflow CLAUDE.md (rust:mordant keeps the check directory intentionally so incremental edits stay fast, and tells developers to clear it when only the baseline changed) — a reasonable resolution for an optional nit on a dev-only script. The hunt exited on dry_streak with no findings. I could not inspect the PR's own CI checks from this environment, so the "cold run passes" claim is taken from the description, but a failure there would be visible and non-blocking.

mordant, turned on in main by #43661, does not look at items that are part of
a public API, so making the crate private showed it code it had not looked at.

- The Mode to output-format match was written twice, in bake/mod.rs and
  bake_body.rs (same_match_twice). It is one method, Mode::output_format.
- Nine findings in code this branch does not touch are recorded in the
baseline, which is what it is for: always_unwrapped_option (4),
  field_valid_only_when (4), parallel_bools (1).

…ts in CI (#42178)

### Problem
- `cargo check --workspace --all-targets` fails on main, and no CI job
runs it: `cargo clippy` checks the default targets only, and `rust:miri`
builds a few crates' tests.
- Cause 1: `src/bundler/options.rs:2328: error[E0308]: mismatched types:
expected ContentHash, found integer`. The unit test
`path_template_print_tolerates_malformed_brackets` passes `Some(0)`, and
since #41317 that parameter is `Option<bun_core::fmt::ContentHash>`.
- Cause 2, since a2b69f7 (#43650): `bun_runtime (lib test)` fails
with 1256 `dead_code` errors. The test harness leaves out `bin_entry`,
the entry point that keeps the crate's items alive. The crate's modules
are `pub(crate)` now, and the workspace denies `dead_code`.

### Fix
- The test passes `ContentHash::short(0)`. No assertion in it prints a
hash, so the value does not matter.
- `src/runtime/lib.rs` gets `#![cfg_attr(test, allow(dead_code))]`. The
crate's own build still checks `dead_code`.
- The `cargo clippy` job gets a `cargo check --workspace --all-targets`
step. It type-checks `#[cfg(test)]` code, `tests/` and `benches/` in
every crate, so the next break of this kind fails CI.
- `bun_bundler` joins `MIRI_CRATES` in `scripts/rust-miri.ts`. Its three
unit tests pass under Tree Borrows.
- Verified on the branch merged with main at b2c751d: the check fails
before (the two causes above) and passes after. `bun run rust:miri -p
bun_bundler` passes.

### Background
- A workspace crate's test binary does not link on its own: it lacks the
C and C++ symbols that only the full `bun` link provides. Miri
interprets MIR and never links, so `rust:miri` is where these unit tests
can run.
- `cargo check` and `cargo clippy` without `--all-targets` build lib and
bin targets only, so `#[cfg(test)]` code is not type-checked.

<details><summary>Notes</summary>

- `path_template_print` renders output name templates such as
`[dir]/[name]-[hash].[ext]`. `ContentHash` (`src/bun_core/fmt.rs`) is a
hash value plus the width that `[hashN]` asks for.
- #41957 changes the same test line in the same way, as part of a
behaviour change to `[ext]`. The hunk here is byte-identical, so the two
do not conflict whichever merges first.
- `cargo clippy --all-targets` was the first idea for the guard. It
reports over 100 lint errors in test and bench code across ten crates
(`undocumented_unsafe_blocks`, `disallowed_methods`, ...). Test code was
never held to the workspace lint set, so that is a separate cleanup.
Plain `cargo check --all-targets` is clean today.
- CI cost, measured on an 8-core container in a fresh worktree after
`--configure-only` and `ninja codegen clone-lolhtml clone-rust-argon2`:
the new check step takes 1m58s from a cold target dir (it downloads the
bench dev-dependencies: criterion, quick-xml, roxmltree, xml-rs). In the
miri job, `bun_bundler` and its dependencies add about 30 s to the
`--no-run` build with only the configure-time codegen files present. Its
tests run in under 1 s. `bun_collections` stays the long pole of that
job.
- #37592 and #37599 also touch `rust-lints.yml` and `rust-miri.ts`
(native `cargo test` for the miri crate set). They do not build
`bun_bundler`'s tests or check test targets workspace-wide.
- Merged main on 2026-09-21 to clear a conflict in
`.github/workflows/CLAUDE.md`: four pull requests rewrote the mordant
part of that section (#43661, #43669, #43680, #43700). The section is
main's text plus this PR's `clippy` cell and bullet. The mordant job is
untouched.
- The `dead_code` source lint
(`test/internal/source-lints/dead-code-escapes.test.ts`) counts
item-level `#[allow(dead_code)]` only, not a crate-level
`#![cfg_attr(test, ...)]`, and it passes.
- There is no `bun test` file for this change: it is a Rust
`#[cfg(test)]` function plus CI configuration. The `cargo clippy` and
`cargo miri test` checks on this PR are the proof.
