ci: fix the newest-passed-build lookup for the symbol order file - #42949
Conversation
candidateBuilds() appends `.json` to the Location of Buildkite's `builds/latest?branch=<b>&state=passed` redirect. Since 2026-08-21 the Location repeats the query, so the request goes to `<build>?branch=main&state=passed.json`, Buildkite answers with the HTML page, and the lookup returns no build. Every build step also spends about 6 seconds on the three retries. Inheriting has depended on the 200-number probe alone since then. When more than 200 build numbers separate two builds of main, nothing is inherited: the lanes that cannot trace their own binary (linux-x64, darwin-aarch64, both windows targets) ship unordered, and linux-aarch64 pays a second link. Put `.json` on the path of the redirect target. Probe first, because the nearest build's file matches the link best: while the newest passed build was asked first, one stale file served every build until main passed again. Use the newest passed build as the fallback once the probe is spent.

inheritOrderFile() stopped after 50 candidates of any kind. With the newest passed build offered last, a window with 50 builds of the branch that published nothing closed the generator before that candidate came out. The probe now stops after 50 candidates, and the newest passed build is always offered.
…teBuilds() Two clauses of the walk had no test: the newest passed build is still asked when the build has no number to probe from, and the redirect's Location is resolved against the request. Each new test fails when its clause is removed.

LGTM — the latest push covers the two untested clauses I flagged (no build number, relative Location), and the walk reads correctly against every case in the new describe block.
What was reviewed:
- Traced
candidateBuilds()by hand through all six fixtures (nearest-first with dedup, quiet branch, 60-build crowded window, buildNumber: undefined, relativeLocation, no passed build) — theseen.sizecap, thenumber > 1bound, and thenew URL(location, latest)→${origin}${pathname}.jsonrebuild each produce the assertedfound/requestedvalues. - Checked the dropped in-loop
seen.has(body.id): the probe visits each build number once, so ids cannot repeat there; the only duplicate source is the final fallback, which still dedups. inheritOrderFile()is the sole caller and keeps the default lookups;triedis now a counter only, and the "found no earlier build" / "none of the N builds tried" messages still work.- Nothing in the new
ci.tscode is bun-only (fetchwithredirect: "manual",URL), so the Node runtime path for build scripts is unaffected.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR touches only scripts/build/ci.ts (the candidateBuilds() async generator that finds an earlier Buildkite build to inherit a symbol order file from) and its existing test file test/js/bun/perf/linker-order.test.ts. The generator is exported, gains an injectable BuildLookups seam with a module-level default, inverts the search order (probe nearest build numbers first, then the newest passed build as a single fallback), moves the 50-candidate cap into the generator, and fixes the .json placement on the redirect target so the query Buildkite now echoes in Location no longer breaks the request. Three commits: the fix, moving the cap into the probe, and (after my prior review) tests for the buildNumber: undefined and relative-Location clauses.
Security risks
None. This is build-tooling code that issues unauthenticated GET requests to Buildkite and reads public build JSON; no credentials are handled, no user input reaches it, and the only downstream effect is which build id is passed to buildkite-agent artifact download. The branch value is URL-encoded as before. Nothing here ships in the bun binary.
Level of scrutiny
Moderate. The change is small (~60 lines of logic) and self-contained, with a clear failure mode: the worst outcome of a wrong candidate list is an unordered link, which is the status quo the PR is fixing. I traced each test fixture through the generator manually (I could not execute the suite in this environment) and confirmed the expected found and requested values follow from the code: the probe loop's seen.size >= 50 break, the number > 1 guard, the skip of the fallback when its id was already yielded, and the origin+pathname rebuild of a relative or query-carrying Location. The test-side ctx() helper spreads overrides last, so buildNumber: undefined genuinely reaches the generator.
Other factors
The only third-party thread (coderabbitai) was resolved by a non-author and followed by a commit. Both of my earlier inline comments were handled: the optional coverage gap is closed by 7c11768, and the other was explicitly pre-existing and non-blocking. No CODEOWNERS entry covers scripts/build/ or this test file. The hunt ran to a dry streak with no findings. The one policy decision — probing first at a cost of up to ~200 requests when the branch is quiet — is argued with build-log data in the description and is bounded by existing constants, so it does not warrant holding the PR for a design discussion.
Problem
~ symbol order: found no earlier build to inherit from (34s)). Unordered, bun hello.jskeeps about 22 MB of text resident, not 7 MB.candidateBuilds()(scripts/build/ci.ts:827). It appends.jsonto theLocationof Buildkite'sbuilds/latest?branch=main&state=passedredirect. Since 2026-08-21 theLocationrepeats the query, so the request is<build>?branch=main&state=passed.json. Buildkite answers with HTML, and the lookup returns no build.Fix
.jsonon the path of the redirect target.test/js/bun/perf/linker-order.test.ts(six new tests, the fallback test fails with the old URL). Run for real from #113190, the walk now yields the newest passed build. Background
trace-orderstep traces it on a native host and publishesbun-<target>.order. The next build of main inherits that file.candidateBuilds()probes build numbers.Notes
How often. I read the
Inherit symbol order filegroup of the linux-x64 build step for 35 builds of main from 09-05 to 09-16. 33 inherited a file. #112691 (none of the 3 builds tried published it (33s)) and #113190 did not, on any lane. In both, linux-aarch64, which builds natively, paid the second link (Tracing bun-profile to build a fresh order file (nothing to inherit)). #112691 is a passed build, so its binaries were uploaded as the canary. A sample of August builds has a third case: #103671 on 08-22 (found no earlier build to inherit from (37s)).When it broke. The lookup worked from #33345 (07-05) until 08-21. #69595 inherited from #68645, 950 build numbers back, in 1s. #102263 (08-21 04:33Z) inherited from #102067 in 0s. #102418 (08-21 06:54Z) took 33s to inherit from #102263, 155 numbers back. No commit touched
scripts/build/ci.tsorscripts/utils.mjsin that window, so the redirect changed on Buildkite's side. What it looks like since. The time to inherit follows the distance to the build inherited from, at about 0.16 s per build number on top of a fixed 6 s. The fixed part is
utils.curlretrying the JSON parse of the HTML page three times, with sleeps of 2 s and 3 s.Why the probe goes first. The code on main asks the newest passed build first. With only the URL corrected, every build of main inherits from the newest passed build again, and not from the nearest build. Most builds of main fail a test or get cancelled, so that file is often many commits old. Rust symbol names (v0 mangling) embed a hash per crate. The hash changes when the dependencies of the crate change, or when the toolchain changes, and then the names in an older file no longer resolve. The
+ symbol order: appliedline of the linux-x64 build step shows both orders:The probe costs about 30 s when the window is empty, in a build step that takes many minutes.
The fallback is one candidate. The
trace-orderstep issoft_fail, so a passed build can lack the file. In that case nothing is inherited, as today. The cap of 50 candidates now counts inside the probe, so a crowded window cannot keep the newest passed build from being asked.Releases. A release build of a cross-compiled lane inherits the same way. The linux-x64 build of v1.4.2 (#110323) inherited from #110317. A release cut more than 200 build numbers after the previous build of main ships unordered on those lanes.
The seam.
BuildLookupsfollowsOrderFileContextin the same file: the facts come in as an argument so that the decision runs in a test. The default value makes the same two requests as before.inheritOrderFile()is the only caller and uses the default.Related. #37711 touches the same files for a different problem (a
trace-orderstep for linux-aarch64). With it, a lane that inherits nothing links unordered and no longer traces itself, so this fallback matters more. Not in this PR.
curl()inscripts/utils.mjskeeps theerrorof a failed attempt after a retry succeeds, so a build whose JSON needed one retry is skipped here. The bug is from 2024 and affects every caller ofcurl()andcurlSafe(). It gets its own PR.Self-review. A review of this description raised three points. One was a wrong claim in my draft, that the lookup never worked: the July and August logs show that it worked until 08-21, and the text above says so. The other two are the single fallback candidate and the cost of the probe. I accept both, for the reasons above.
Test runs.
