JavaScriptCore, WTF, bmalloc — and, on every target except macOS, ICU — are compiled from source inside bun's own ninja graph, like every other vendored dependency, instead of being downloaded as a prebuilt bun-webkit-* tarball. This is the default for every build, local and CI; --webkit=prebuilt remains as an explicit opt-in.

What changes

CI

  • All 13 build-bun lanes (Linux x64/arm64 glibc + baseline + musl + ASAN, Android, FreeBSD, macOS x64/arm64, Windows x64/arm64) compile JSC in the same graph as bun's own C++; no libJavaScriptCore.a/libWTF.a/libbmalloc.a step — the objects go straight into the same archive/link as bun's.
  • A WebKit change no longer needs a prebuilt to be published before bun can build against it: bump WEBKIT_VERSION to any commit pushed to oven-sh/WebKit.
  • build-bun steps take ~1–2.5 min longer per target. Binary sizes: see the table below (nothing grew; FreeBSD/Android −13 MB from ICU data packing, windows-arm64 −3.5 MB, the rest under 2 MB).
  • Build images: bootstrap.sh v42 adds flex/bison (host migcom for the macOS lanes). Linux images are baked as a Buildkite job on a fresh machine of the target distro plus a wait-for-image step, instead of an instance driven over SSH from the hosted agent.
  • build-bun is a plain full build now (the archive-link mode is removed): bun's objects go straight into the link as in a local build, and the per-lane libbun-*.a.gz / libbun_runtime.a.gz / dep-lib artifact uploads, which nothing consumed, are gone. cpp-only keeps its archive for the split pipeline. The precompiled header is built whenever C++ is compiled (previously skipped for CI + full).
  • bootstrap.ps1 v23: ruby and zstd for native from-source builds on the Windows images, and LLVM 21.1.8 installed from its release installer (scoop's llvm@21.1.8 now generates a non-existent .msi URL).
  • Buildkite canvas: verify-baseline and trace-order are drawn beside each target's build group instead of inside it (from ci: draw verify-baseline and trace-order beside the build group, not inside it #41408; no scheduling change).

Local development

  • bun bd / bun run build compile JSC too (fetched by ninja like every dep, ~35 MB sparse; the first build of a build dir pays ~2 min for JSC, then it is incremental and ccache-friendly). Host tools needed: ruby, python3, perl (JSC's generators), zstd (ICU data, non-macOS targets), and flex/bison only when cross-compiling a macOS target from Linux (a Mac uses Xcode's mig).
  • Release builds are LTO by default everywhere (what CI ships); --lto=off for fast relinks. The btg profile is gone (it was "release + LTO"). On a native macOS or Windows host whose rustc LLVM is newer than clang's (today: nightly LLVM 22 vs Homebrew llvm@21), the Rust↔C++ cross-language step is skipped and each half LTOs on its own — Apple's ld runs LTO through clang's libLTO, which can't read newer bitcode and has no lld to swap in; CI cross-compiles both from Linux with rustc's lld and keeps full cross-language LTO.
  • Working on JSC itself: --local-deps=WebKit=<your clone> on any profile, like every other dep; bun run build:local is that with $BUN_WEBKIT_PATH. The debug-local/release-local profiles and the nested-cmake WebKit build are removed. vendor/WebKit is the build's own fetch, so clones live elsewhere.
  • Upgrading WebKit: the build itself checks the fetched tree against what scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts transcribes — Sources.txt against the checked-in unified-bundle lists, and a canonical rendering of the relevant CMake statements (generators, options, compiler flags) against webkit-cmake.snapshot — and fails with a diff when a bump changes them; .claude/commands/upgrade-webkit.md says where each kind of change maps.

How it works

  • One dep kind. Every C/C++ dep is a direct spec in scripts/build/deps/*.ts: source groups (each with its own flags/includes/PCH), steps (generators, host tools, target executables), headers (files written at configure). WebKit is the same shape as zlib, just larger; the custom kind is gone.
  • WebKit (deps/webkit.ts + deps/webkit-{bmalloc,wtf,jsc,llint,inspector}-sources.ts): bmalloc, WTF and JavaScriptCore as three source groups; JSC's TUs are the unified bundles listed explicitly in webkit-sources.ts (as WebKit's bundler forms them, regenerated on a bump) plus the @no-unify files; every generator WebKit's cmake runs (create_hash_table LUTs, bytecode/Air/yarr/wasm generators, JS builtins, inspector protocol, GeneratePreferences, offlineasm via the two LLInt extractor executables, MIG on macOS) is a step invoking the same script with the same arguments; cmakeconfig.h, the <JavaScriptCore/X.h> / <bmalloc/X.h> forwarding stubs and the bundle files are headers entries. Compile flags reproduce OptionsJSCOnly / WebKitCompilerFlags / OptionsMSVC per platform on top of bun's dep-global flags, so JSC gets bun's -march, LTO, sanitizer and hardening settings. Nothing reads the WebKit tree at configure time.
  • ICU (deps/icu.ts + deps/icu-sources.ts, icu-data.ts): common/i18n compiled in-graph; a host icupkg; the data file filtered and its display-name items zstd-repacked with a trained dictionary, decompressed on first use through src/jsc/bindings/bun_icu_decompress.cpp. That scheme was already in the Linux/Windows prebuilts; it now applies uniformly (Linux, musl, Android, FreeBSD, Windows). macOS keeps the SDK's libicucore.
  • Link-time checks run as ninja validations of bun's link on every lane, all static (scripts/build/verify-binary.ts, expectations per target in binary-expectations.ts): exported symbols vs the lists in src/; the exact NEEDED / dylib / import-DLL set and the glibc (2.17) / FBSD (1.7) symbol-version ceiling (un-numbered version nodes such as GLIBC_ABI_DT_RELR count; Android's floor is bionic's LIBC…LIBC_P / LIBLOG…LIBLOG_O, API 28); forbidden imports (__cxa_throw, __emutls_*, …); every static initializer symbolized and matched against the runtime's known ones (none may come from bun/JSC/WTF); nx-stack / no-RWX / PIE / DllCharacteristics; debug-info shape; and no symbol strongly defined by two link inputs (every input must be readable by the scanning tool — under the rustc/clang LLVM skew the scan uses rustup's llvm-nm, hence the llvm-tools component in rust-toolchain.toml). Plus the existing --revision smoke test (host-runnable targets only) and the JSC ClassInfo audit.
  • testFFI (JSC's bun:ffi ABI test program) is compiled and linked by bun.ts next to bun from the same objects and shipped in the CI artifact; the test fails, not skips, if it is missing in CI.
  • Native macOS and Windows hosts (which CI never exercises — every lane cross-compiles from Linux) were built end to end: Xcode's mig, clang-cl as the target compiler with clang as the host compiler, ICU data packing and testFFI all work there.
  • Cross targets build from the Linux agents as before: macOS with the SDK plus Apple's migcom built for the host (deps/bootstrap-cmds.ts), Windows with clang-cl and the auto-fetched MSVC sysroot, FreeBSD/Android with their sysroots. macOS and Windows hosts work too.
  • Linking without archives. bun's own objects and the dependencies' objects go straight to the link; no libbun-*.a, no per-dep .a/.lib. The dep objects are a lazy group (link()'s lazyObjects: lld's /start-lib … /end-lib, i.e. taken only if referenced — a static library's semantics minus the file). That matters on Windows: COFF linkers discard unreferenced code only at COMDAT granularity, so an object with plain sections that nothing calls (any NASM output — BoringSSL's AES-GCM-SIV asm is never called on Windows by BoringSSL's own design) would otherwise be linked whole; upstream and Chromium rely on archive member selection for the same thing. The group reaches lld-link through clang-cl as /clang:-Wl,@<exe>.lazy.rsp. On ELF/Mach-O the objects simply follow bun's in $in (those linkers dead-strip per section).
  • Windows: /lld-allow-duplicate-weak. WTF/JSC reference bun's hooks (WTFTimer__*, Bun__errorInstance__finalize, Bun__reportUnhandledError) as __attribute__((weak)); COFF has no weak undefined symbol, so each referencing TU carries a weak external with its own absolute-0 default and lld-link (MSVC mode) reports two such TUs as a duplicate symbol even though bun's strong definition wins — which ThinLTO importing RunLoop::TimerBase::start() into a JSC module produces. lld-link's switch for exactly that check is on for bun's and the JSC test programs' links (the latter previously used /force:multiple); duplicate strong definitions still error. It becomes a no-op once lld-link accepts several weak references to one symbol (fixed in bun's LLVM toolchain) and is to be dropped then.

Build-system changes that came along:

  • ninja.ts declares every build-dir output under its absolute path as well, so a header a compiler depfile names absolutely resolves to its generator and its includers recompile in the same run (was one build late; affected bun's own codegen/ too).
  • ninja_required_version is 1.11 (validations). One phony per order-only group instead of repeating generated-header lists on every compile edge.
  • One dep_codegen rule (stream.ts --cwd/--env/--stdout) for all dep generators; host_cc/host_cxx/host_link for host tools; hostCc/hostCxx are the plain clang drivers for any Windows target; -fsanitize=address is part of the target link flags; tarball sources carry a sha256; dep fetches print [name] … (elapsed).
  • Tools that assumed a prebuilt layout now read the build: scripts/jsc-exception-lint takes JSC's TUs from compile_commands.json; bun-inspector-protocol's generator reads our CombinedDomains.json; .vscode/c_cpp_properties.json just points at the compile database.

Bugs and misconfigurations on main that this fixes

Found by diffing compile lines against WebKit's cmake and dissecting main's release binaries target by target:

  • windows-arm64: JSC compiled with FP contraction. JSC's CMakeLists sets -ffp-contract=off -fno-slp-vectorize for the whole target; clang-cl ignores the GNU spellings and cmake's probe dropped them, so the Windows prebuilt never had them. On arm64 that fused Date arithmetic (setNewValueFromTimeArgs, millisecondsFromComponents, dateProtoFuncSetYear, …) into fmadd, i.e. different rounding than every other platform and than the JIT. Now passed as /clang:-ffp-contract=off /clang:-fno-slp-vectorize.
  • Stack protector depended on the host compiler's vendor default. Nothing stated a policy, so CI (apt.llvm.org clang) shipped without it while a build on Arch/Alpine/Fedora-packaged clang got -fstack-protector-strong in every eligible function (62k canary checks vs 161), and the musl JSC prebuilt (Alpine clang) had it while no other target did. -fno-stack-protector is now explicit on unix.
  • PIC depended on the host compiler's default for deps. bun's own objects were -fno-pic, vendored deps got whatever the building clang defaults to. CI's clang defaults to non-PIE so release artifacts were unaffected, but on hosts whose clang defaults to PIE (Arch, Fedora, Alpine, Homebrew) every dep was PIC: .data.rel.ro 541 KB instead of 109 KB and 4–7% more pages touched at startup. Every dep now gets bun's PIC policy explicitly.
  • windows-arm64 tuned for Ampere. -mtune=ampere1 (copied from the Linux server lane) padded every function and loop to 64 bytes on Snapdragon hardware; MSVC, Chromium and Rust use generic tuning there. Dropped; -march=armv8-a+crc unchanged.
  • Windows: the exe's import library overwrote the object archive. bun.exe exports symbols, so lld-link wrote bun-profile.lib, the same path as the object archive cpp-only mode produces. It now goes to obj/<exe>.import.lib.
  • Generated headers were one build late. A generated header named absolutely in a depfile didn't match its relative ninja output, so includers recompiled on the next run (bun's codegen/ headers too). Fixed in ninja.ts as above.
  • FreeBSD/Android shipped 13 MB of ICU data they never load. Only the Linux and Windows prebuilts filtered and compressed ICU data; every non-macOS target now does.
  • With a warm ccache, the second build of a fresh build dir recompiled hundreds of objects (macOS, Windows). The build exported CCACHE_FILECLONE=1; entries stored that way are raw files, and a hit is materialized by clone (APFS) or CopyFile (Windows), both keeping the entry's mtime, so objects came out older than headers generated in the same run. Dropped, plus CCACHE_NAMESPACE=bun so the raw entries already in everyone's cache are never hit again.
  • bun run build never reached a no-op with an isolated-layout node_modules. The install edge declared node_modules/<dep>/package.json as outputs; ninja pre-creates output directories, so node_modules/<dep>/ existed before bun install ran, bun's isolated linker skipped the symlink, and install (plus the esbuild/cargo edges behind it) re-ran on every build. It now declares the node_modules/<dep> entry itself.
  • Links were serialized through ninja's console pool. link was a pool = console rule (depth 1), so once the graph had more than one executable (bun, testFFI, JSC's LLInt extractors) bun's link waited behind the others — ~25 s per release lane. Links are ordinary edges now; the smoke test and ClassInfo check became ninja validations of the link.
  • Every build after a build-script edit configured twice. ninja judges its regen edge by the mtime it recorded for build.ninja, not the file's, so the manifest build.ts had just refreshed still looked stale and ninja ran configure again ([0/1] reconfigure). Configure now stamps the manifest and ninja -t restats it.
  • bun.exe exported bmalloc's API and libpas' g_config. bmalloc's BEXPORT is __declspec(dllexport) even in a static build (WTF's macro has the fork's carve-out, bmalloc's doesn't); 23 stray exports on top of the intended Node-API/V8/libuv/llhttp set (same on main's prebuilt). Found by the new export check; fixed with -DBEXPORT=.
  • Debug builds ran ~93 static initializers from the generated classes. ZigGeneratedClasses.cpp initialized each extern "C" <Type>__ptrOffset from a non-constexpr offsetOfWrapped(); -O2 folded them, -O0 ran them at startup. constexpr now, so they're constant-initialized in every build (found by the new initializer audit).
  • bun.exe ran in the Windows Vista compatibility context. Its manifest had no <compatibility>/<trustInfo> section, so Windows applied Vista-era behavior (version APIs capped at 6.2, PCA monitoring) to bun and every addon in-process. Now declares Windows 7–11 and asInvoker, like node.exe; one visible effect is process.report's header.osRelease reporting 10.0 instead of 6.1 on Windows 10/11 (os.release() was already right, it uses RtlGetVersion). Found by comparing against node's binaries.
  • Linux/FreeBSD exported four bun-internal napi_internal_* helpers through the napi* glob in the version script (macOS/Windows didn't). Renamed out of the napi_ namespace.
  • WebKit's own warning set wasn't applied when compiling it (once JSC is built here rather than by cmake): -Wall -Wextra … -Werror=undefined-inline/-internal and the -Wno-* upstream carries (e.g. clang 21's -Wcharacter-conversion) now match WebKitCompilerFlags.cmake / OptionsMSVC.cmake.

What changes in the shipped binaries

Sizes are the stripped bun from CI's binary-size step (build 110808) against main's canary of the same day (110791):

target this PR vs main why
linux-x64 / linux-aarch64 75.80 / 75.74 MB −120 KB / −65 KB JSC/WTF/bmalloc compiled with bun's flags (explicit -fno-stack-protector, -march, debug-info/hardening) instead of WebKit's cmake; same NEEDED set, glibc 2.17 floor, exports, ICU 78.3 / Unicode 17 data
darwin-aarch64 / darwin-x64 59.16 / 65.13 MB −290 KB / −630 KB same; the prebuilt was compiled by a clang that defaults to stack protectors, bun's flags say -fno-stack-protector
linux-x64-musl / aarch64-musl 68.58 / 68.03 MB −1.58 MB / −1.23 MB the musl prebuilt came from Alpine's clang (-fstack-protector-strong by default): ~60k JSC functions lose the canary check
linux-{x64,aarch64}-android 72.63 / 70.12 MB −12.75 MB / −12.73 MB ICU data now filtered and zstd-packed as it already was on Linux and Windows (decompressed on first use)
freebsd-x64 / freebsd-aarch64 74.55 / 77.74 MB −12.87 MB / −12.83 MB same
windows-x64 81.40 MB −0.84 MB ICU's common/i18n code is compiled as ThinLTO bitcode in bun's link instead of the fork's non-LTO MSBuild static libs, so unreferenced ICU functions and their unwind records go (−0.78 MB: .text −201 KB, .rdata/.xdata −476 KB, .pdata −100 KB; the data blob is unchanged — Windows already shipped it filtered+zstd); Rust −0.15 MB from cross-language LTO decisions; JSC/WTF ±0
windows-aarch64 70.58 MB −3.47 MB generic scheduling instead of -mtune=ampere1, whose 64-byte function/loop alignment padded all of JSC once it followed bun's flags; JSC gets -ffp-contract=off -fno-slp-vectorize under clang-cl as everywhere else (Date arithmetic no longer fused into fmadd)

Also:

  • Windows x64 / arm64: 23 fewer exports from bun.exe (bmalloc/libpas symbols gone; the Node-API, libuv, V8-shim and llhttp exports are unchanged, matching node.exe).
  • Windows x64 / arm64 — runtime behavior change: bun.exe's manifest now declares supportedOS (Windows 7 through 10/11) and requestedExecutionLevel asInvoker, so Windows stops running bun (and every native addon it loads) in the Vista compatibility context: GetVersionEx/VerifyVersionInfo report the real OS version in-process (process.report's header.osRelease reads 10.0 on Windows 10/11, previously 6.1), the Program Compatibility Assistant no longer tracks the process, and installer-detection heuristics no longer apply. node.exe ships the same manifest sections.
  • Linux / FreeBSD: 4 fewer exports (napi_internal_*).
  • All targets: testFFI[.exe] ships next to bun-profile in the profile zip (debug info stripped, 35–80 MB).
  • Not changed, now pinned by the link-time checks: exported symbol set (ELF/Mach-O), dynamic library set and symbol-version ceilings, zero static initializers from bun/JSC/WTF, nx-stack / no RWX / PIE-where-required / DllCharacteristics, no RELRO/BIND_NOW on ELF (the existing -z norelro -z lazy link mode), musl's dynamic libstdc++.so.6 (shared with N-API addons, as node does).

Verification

  • CI green on every target with the full test suite.
  • Generated sources byte-compared against WebKit's own cmake build of the same commit: all LUTs, bytecode/Air/yarr/wasm outputs, JSCBuiltins.{h,cpp}, inspector outputs, the LLInt headers and the unified bundles are identical; cmakeconfig.h is row-identical to each platform's prebuilt header (release and debug).
  • Compile lines token-diffed against cmake's per platform; remaining differences are bun-wide policy.
  • Release binaries diffed against main's for every target (sections, symbols, exports, ISA mix, DWARF, startup instruction/page counts): parity, apart from the changes listed above.
  • Incremental behaviour: a second ninja is a no-op; regenerating a header recompiles its includers in the same run; reconfigure with unchanged inputs rewrites nothing; a build dir with no vendor/ trees fetches WebKit/ICU as ordinary ninja edges.

…webkit=source)

Adds a third WebKit mode next to `prebuilt` (default, unchanged) and `local`
(your own clone, nested cmake): `--webkit=source` fetches only
Source/{bmalloc,WTF,JavaScriptCore} of the pinned oven-sh/WebKit commit
(sparse blobless git fetch, ~35 MB instead of a 12 GB clone) and compiles it
with the same cc/cxx/pch/ar/link edges and flag tables as every other dep, no
cmake. Linux CI lanes now build this way; macOS/Windows/FreeBSD stay on the
prebuilt tarball for now.

- deps/webkit-direct.ts: file lists come from WebKit's own CMakeLists and
Sources.txt via a small CMake evaluator (cmake-lists.ts), so WebKit bumps
need no list edits here. Emits JSC's code generators (LUT tables,
bytecodes, Air opcodes, Yarr/lexer tables, wasm ops, builtins, inspector
protocol, preferences), WebKit's own unified-source bundling, the
  LLIntSettingsExtractor -> LLIntOffsetsExtractor -> LLIntAssembly.h chain,
forwarding headers, cmakeconfig.h (matching the prebuilt's for gnu, musl,
android and freebsd), the three archives and testFFI. Generated files are
byte-identical to the cmake build's for the same commit.
- deps/icu.ts: ICU 78.3 from the release tarball, common/i18n compiled from
  ICU's sources.txt, a host icupkg, and icu-data.ts reproducing the prebuilt's
data pipeline (filter unused items, rbnf keep-list guard, per-item zstd with
a trained dictionary) into libicudata. macOS keeps the SDK's libicucore.
- source.ts/fetch-cli.ts: `github` sources gain `sparse` (git sparse fetch,
cached as a tarball), a `tarball` source kind, a `custom` build kind for
deps that emit their own graph, configure-time fetch for deps whose graph
is read from their tree, and a guard that refuses to replace a vendor/<dep>
  that is somebody's git clone.
- flags.ts: the toolchain half of the link line (triple/sysroot/linker/C++
runtime/PIE) moves into targetLinkFlags so the JSC extractor executables
link with the same flags bun does on cross-compiled lanes.
- bun's C++ now waits on JSC codegen rather than the archives in this mode,
so bun and JSC translation units compile concurrently.

One file per dep, like the others: the --webkit=source emitter and its
cmakeconfig.h table move from deps/webkit-direct.ts and
deps/webkit-config-header.ts into deps/webkit.ts. No change to the
generated build.ninja.
…r LTO

WebKit only adds -fno-lto to this file for GCC's asm post-processing;
with clang the prebuilt has always compiled it with -flto=thin. Stripping
-flto while -fwhole-program-vtables stayed on the line made clang reject
the command on the LTO (release) CI lanes.
…042c63' into claude/webkit-clone-performance-042c63
…ps/webkit.ts

Replace the configure-time CMake evaluator with plain file lists, like the
other deps: WTF and bmalloc sources (with the per-OS WTF files), JSC's
.lut.h inputs, builtins, inspector domains, include and header dirs. JSC's
own translation units still come from its Sources.txt through WebKit's
unified bundler; header and offlineasm directories are globbed. A file
upstream adds/removes now fails as a missing file or symbol at build time
and the list gets edited during the WebKit upgrade (noted in
.claude/commands/upgrade-webkit.md).

Deletes scripts/build/cmake-lists.ts and its test. Generated build.ninja is
unchanged apart from dropping a nonexistent WTF/DerivedSources include dir.
Like every other direct dep: the bmalloc/WTF/JSC and ICU objects go straight
onto bun's link line (and into cpp-only's archive on CI) instead of being
ar'd into libJavaScriptCore.a / libWTF.a / libbmalloc.a / libicu*.a first.
testFFI links the same object list.

`--webkit` is now `source` (JSC/WTF/bmalloc compiled in bun's own graph)
or `prebuilt`. Building your own WebKit clone is the same direct build
pointed at it: `--webkit=source --local-deps=WebKit=<path>`, which is
what the `*-local` profiles / `bun run build:local` now do (from
$BUN_WEBKIT_PATH or vendor/WebKit).

With its only user gone, the nested-cmake build kind (dep_configure /
dep_build / dep_prebuild rules, emitNestedCmake, preBuild, the Windows
build-icu.ps1 hook, ranlib/mt toolchain plumbing) is deleted.

… musl

- ASAN: compile JSC/WTF/bmalloc with -fno-optimize-sibling-calls, as
WebKit's own ASAN configuration does. Without it tail calls such as
  JSModuleLoader::evaluateNonVirtual vanish from LeakSanitizer's
allocation stacks and the frame-name suppressions in test/leaksan.supp
stop matching (the x64-asan lane's new "leaks").
- musl: compile at -Os, which is how the Alpine JSC has always been built;
  -O3 made bun-linux-*-musl ~6 MB larger.
- verify-baseline: allowlist llint_op_jmp_wide32, another LLInt
embedded-opcode-id decode desync (see the comment above the entry).
- `tarball` sources carry a sha256; fetchDep verifies the downloaded (or
cached) file before extracting and drops a mismatching one.
- configure imports fetch-cli.ts/download.ts to fetch custom deps' trees,
so they are configure inputs now (editing them regenerates build.ninja).
- sparse git fetch: abort a stalled transfer (http.lowSpeedLimit/Time) so
the retry loop handles it instead of hanging.
- webkit_gen env vars use `set "K=V" &&` under cmd.exe on a Windows host.

Pre-create host object directories before compiling ICU.

hostObjects uses nested paths such as host-obj/common/*.o, but host_cxx only invokes the compiler. Configure-time mkdirAll receives output.objects; emitIcu returns target objects there, not hostObjects. A fresh ICU build can therefore fail when the compiler writes $out or $out.d.

…t's cmake

From a per-TU diff of our graph against WebKit's own cmake build configured
the way the prebuilt tarballs are (Release+LTO, Release+ASAN, MinSizeRel,
Debug, Debug+ASAN):

- JSC's C files (Binja.c, the zydis bundle) get the JavaScriptCore target
  flags too: -ffp-contract=off -fno-slp-vectorize and the static-link
defines, not just the C++ ones.
- Debug: LowLevelInterpreter.cpp at -O1, as JSC's CMakeLists does (IPInt
handler sizes exceed their alignment slots at -O0 on x86_64,
  webkit.org/b/310768).
- Release: WebKit's <iostream> ban directory ahead of the toolchain
headers for WebKit C++ TUs (OptionsJSCOnly.cmake).
- -fno-rtti / -fvisibility-inlines-hidden are C++-only in the global flag
table instead of also landing on every dep's C compile line.
- Post-link `check`: run WebKit's check-classinfo-uniqueness.py on the
linked bun (the fork ran it on its jsc shell) — JSC compares types by
ClassInfo address, so an LTO/ICF fold of two s_info is a miscompile the
script catches. The script is added to the sparse fetch.

Everything else the diff showed is warnings-only, spelled differently
(-DX vs -DX=1), or a deliberate bun-wide choice (-fno-pic, -g levels,
mimalloc header from the mimalloc bun links).
… doc notes

The ELF-only limitation is now a configure-time error with a hint instead
of an assert inside the emitter, and is stated in CONTRIBUTING. deps/README
explains that `custom` deps are fetched by configure itself.

offlineasm's --binary-format=ELF (the per-opcode .type/.size annotations)
is Linux-only, matching JSC's CMakeLists: the plain labels they refer to
are only defined under OS(LINUX) in LowLevelInterpreter.cpp, so on FreeBSD
they made the .size expressions unresolvable. With that, freebsd-x64 links
(cross-compiled from Linux like CI does).
…042c63' into claude/webkit-clone-performance-042c63
Cross-compiled from the Linux host the same way the fork's Dockerfile.macos
produces the prebuilt:

- WTF's Mach exception RPC stubs: MachExceptions.defs goes through `mig`
(the fork's macos-cross/ driver: preprocess with the target clang against
the SDK, then Apple's migcom). migcom is built as a host tool from
apple-oss-distributions/bootstrap_cmds (new source-only dep) with flex,
bison and the fork's stub mach headers; the CI image gains flex/bison
  (bootstrap v42).
- ICU: the SDK's libicucore with WebKit's bundled headers (Source/WTF/icu)
  and U_DISABLE_RENAMING, no deps/icu build.
- cmakeconfig.h: the header/function probe rows are absent for Apple
targets and USE_ISO_MALLOC is 0, matching the prebuilt's header exactly.
- WTF's per-OS sources for darwin (OSLogPrintStream.mm, MemoryFootprintCocoa,
generic pressure handler, the two mach_exc stubs). cocoa/TimeZoneCocoa.cpp
is left out: under USE(BUN_JSC_ADDITIONS) TimeZone.cpp already defines
the notifier hook, and the Cocoa one would pull in CoreFoundation.
- offlineasm gets no --binary-format on Mach-O; extractor/testFFI links use
  -dead_strip, bun's Mach-O post-link tool, and `-U` for the runtime hooks
  bun provides.

darwin-arm64 release links to the same four dylibs as the shipping binary
and passes the ClassInfo check; not run locally (no macOS host).

clang-cl / COFF, cross-compiled from the Linux host like the fork's
Dockerfile.windows:

- WebKit TUs get the OptionsMSVC.cmake set (AT&T inline asm for the LLInt,
/GS, EH and RTTI off, /bigobj, /utf-8, dllexportInlines-, ...) and the
Windows defines (UNICODE, NOMINMAX, _WIN32_WINNT=0x0A00, _HAS_EXCEPTIONS=0,
...); libpas gets -mcx16; WTF's win/ sources replace the posix group.
- cmakeconfig.h: the POSIX probes are 0, the two compile probes absent,
  JS_NO_EXPORT 1, ENABLE_API_TESTS 0 — identical to the prebuilt's header.
- ICU: clang-cl spellings for its flags; the data .S (COFF directives) is
assembled with the GNU-driver clang for the same triple.
- offlineasm --platform=Windows; extractor/testFFI links get the lld-link
target flags (now in targetLinkFlags: /machine, /winsysroot, the serviced
UCRT libpath), testFFI the extra system libs and, under LTO,
  /force:multiple for COFF's weak-external defaults of bun's hooks.
- Windows ARM64: no unwind tables on LowLevelInterpreter.cpp /
  MacroAssemblerARM64.cpp (llvm.org/pr47432), as JSC's CMakeLists does.
- The ClassInfo canary is ELF/Mach-O only (PE symbols live in the PDB).

windows-x64 bun.exe and windows-aarch64 WebKit+ICU build locally (cross);
not run.

The in-tree JSC build changed the frame layouts so that test-process-finalization.mjs (gc-not-close.mjs) started to fail on main at random: a stale cell address left by the post-entry collection now lines up with an unwritten slot in Interpreter::executeCall. Fix in #41669.

Upstream oven-sh#41330 (which introduced --webkit=source) was reverted, so the
source mode no longer exists and --local-deps can no longer redirect
WebKit. Build WebKit via --webkit=local + $BUN_WEBKIT_PATH, which
phase_set_env already exports.
dylan-conway added a commit that referenced this pull request Sep 13, 2026
An audit of this branch against #41330 found places that differed from it for
no reason other than how the re-land was put together. They now have #41330's
text, less only what belongs to compiling JavaScriptCore and ICU in the build
graph, the ccache environment, the bootstrap scripts and the archive-link mode.

- The smoke test runs through stream.ts (`--label --elapsed --stamp`) as an
ordinary edge and is a validation of the link, with the static scans; `check`
names them and is no longer a default target.
- One phony (obj/.codegen-ready) stands for the generated headers on every
compile edge; the precompiled header is built whenever C++ is compiled.
- configure emits the graph before the regen rule.
- macOS ASan shim: deployment target and sysroot on the shim's own link, no
  rpath of its own.
- Dep fetches print their elapsed time; prefetch says what it skips.
- Headers under src/jsc/bindings include what they use; build:release:lto is
gone with btg; comments, docs and the post-link test are #41330's.
dylan-conway added a commit that referenced this pull request Sep 13, 2026
A finding of verify-binary.ts (exports, NEEDED set, initializers, hardening,
duplicate definitions) failed the build in every configuration. For ASan and
debug builds it is a warning now: the scans run and print the same report, and
the step passes (`--warn-only`). Those builds are for finding bugs with, and
the expectations describe the binaries that ship. Every other configuration
fails on a finding as before.

This is a deliberate difference from #41330, where every configuration failed.
robobun added a commit that referenced this pull request Sep 14, 2026
WebKit main now has a second copy of the indirect-export check, for
prelinked records (bun build --compile --bytecode). Add two cases that
re-export a missing binding from an external file and run the executable
in all three loader modes.

The merge before this commit moves the WebKit pin to the preview build of
oven-sh/WebKit#581 rebased on WebKit main. After the revert of #41330 the
build fetches prebuilt WebKit again, so a branch sha no longer resolves.
dylan-conway added a commit that referenced this pull request Sep 14, 2026
… the build graph (#42556)

### What does this PR do?

Re-lands the parts of #41330 that do not depend on compiling
JavaScriptCore and ICU inside bun's own build graph. bun keeps linking
the prebuilt `bun-webkit-*` tarballs; nothing here changes how WebKit or
ICU are obtained. One commit per topic, so any of them can be reverted
alone.

**Build graph**
- Generated headers were one build late: a header that a depfile names
by absolute path did not match its relative ninja output, so includers
were recompiled on the *next* run. Every build-dir output is also
declared under its absolute path.
- Every build after a build-script edit configured twice (`[0/1]
reconfigure`). Configure stamps the manifest and `ninja -t restat`s it.
- `bun run build` never reached a no-op with an isolated-layout
`node_modules`: the install edge's outputs made ninja pre-create
`node_modules/<dep>/`, and bun's isolated linker then skipped the
symlink.
- The link is an ordinary edge instead of holding ninja's console pool.

**Link-time checks** (`scripts/build/verify-binary.ts`, expectations per
target in `binary-expectations.ts`), as ninja validations of bun's link
in every mode that links: exported symbols against the lists in `src/`;
the exact NEEDED / dylib / import-DLL set and symbol-version ceilings;
forbidden imports; static initializers; nx-stack / no-RWX / PIE /
DllCharacteristics; no symbol strongly defined by two link inputs. A
check whose tool is missing is not emitted. `ninja_required_version` is
1.11 (validations); `rust-toolchain.toml` gains `llvm-tools`.
- `bun.exe` links the prebuilt WebKit, whose bmalloc is compiled with
`BEXPORT=__declspec(dllexport)`, so it exports 22 bmalloc symbols and
`g_config`. They are a named temporary allowance in the PE export
expectations, to be removed once oven-sh/WebKit builds bmalloc with
`BEXPORT` empty.

**Compiler policy, stated instead of inherited from the host compiler**
- `-fno-stack-protector` on Linux, FreeBSD and Android (it was off with
CI's clang, `-fstack-protector-strong` with Arch/Alpine/Fedora's). macOS
states `-fstack-protector`, which every clang turns on for a Darwin
target, so the macOS binaries keep their canaries.
- Vendored deps follow bun's PIC policy instead of the building clang's
default.
- windows-arm64 without `-mtune=ampere1`.

**Windows**
- The exe's import library no longer overwrites the object archive
(`obj/<exe>.import.lib`).
- `bun.exe`'s manifest declares `supportedOS` (Windows 7 through 10/11)
and `asInvoker`, so Windows stops running bun in the Vista compatibility
context. Visible effect: `process.report`'s `header.osRelease` reads
`10.0` instead of `6.1` on Windows 10/11.

**Runtime symbols**
- `napi_internal_*` → `Bun__napi_*`: the `napi*` glob in the version
scripts exported them on Linux and FreeBSD.
- `offsetOfWrapped()` in the generated classes is `constexpr`: 93 fewer
static initializers in `-O0` builds.

**CI**
- Linux images are baked by a Buildkite job on a fresh machine of the
target distro plus a `wait-for-image` step. Only `[build images]` /
`[publish images]` runs change; ordinary runs generate the same
pipeline.
- `verify-baseline` and `trace-order` are drawn beside each target's
build group; step keys and dependencies are unchanged.
- verify-baseline-static: decoder resync.

**Release is LTO by default**, locally as in CI; `--lto=off` for fast
relinks. The `btg` and `ci-release` profiles are gone and fail with what
to use instead.

Not included from #41330: JavaScriptCore/ICU in the build graph, the
ccache environment change, any change to `bootstrap.sh` /
`bootstrap.ps1`.

**WebKit** is bumped from `cf1b36ec8703` to `9b02218df662`,
oven-sh/WebKit `main` with oven-sh/WebKit#645 merged: #636, #634, #632,
#652, #646, #649 (a direct tail call to a host function could return
into freed JIT code) and #645 (a parser `SyntaxError` with no JS frame
on the stack has its `line`/`sourceURL` again; private builtins' source
text stays out of error messages; a wasm-to-JS frame index fix).
`test/js/bun/jsc/webkit-upgrade-9b02218df6.test.ts` covers what Bun can
see of #645. Against main's build of the same sources, every prebuilt
lane differs only in the two JavaScriptCore objects #645 changes.

### How did you verify your code works?

- `test/internal` build tests pass (212/212), including new cases for
the validations and for a missing tool; `scripts/build` typechecks apart
from two files that already fail on main.
- `--configure-only` for debug, release and each `--mode`: the link edge
carries `|@ … binary-verified … duplicate-symbols-checked`; release
resolves the `-lto` WebKit tarball, `--lto=off` the plain one,
`--profile=btg` fails with the retired-profile message.
- The verifier run by hand on existing binaries: passes on
prebuilt-linked release and debug-asan ELF, and on the released Windows
x64 `bun.exe` with the bmalloc allowance; the duplicate-symbol scan
finds none over 1221 inputs including the prebuilt archives.
- The Buildkite pipeline generated offline for seven scenarios:
identical step keys, `depends_on` and dependency closure on ordinary
runs; image runs match what #41330 generated.
- The rest is for CI on this PR.

- `offsetOfWrapped()` in the generated classes is `constexpr`: 93 fewer
static initializers in `-O0` builds.

Not included from oven-sh#41330: JavaScriptCore/ICU in the build graph, the
ccache environment change, any change to `bootstrap.sh` /
`bootstrap.ps1`.

**WebKit** is bumped from `cf1b36ec8703` to `9b02218df662`,
oven-sh/WebKit `main` with oven-sh/WebKit#645 merged: oven-sh#636, oven-sh#634, oven-sh#632,
oven-sh#652, oven-sh#646, oven-sh#649 (a direct tail call to a host function could return
into freed JIT code) and oven-sh#645 (a parser `SyntaxError` with no JS frame
on the stack has its `line`/`sourceURL` again; private builtins' source
text stays out of error messages; a wasm-to-JS frame index fix).
`test/js/bun/jsc/webkit-upgrade-9b02218df6.test.ts` covers what Bun can
see of oven-sh#645. Against main's build of the same sources, every prebuilt
lane differs only in the two JavaScriptCore objects oven-sh#645 changes.

- The Buildkite pipeline generated offline for seven scenarios:
identical step keys, `depends_on` and dependency closure on ordinary
runs; image runs match what oven-sh#41330 generated.
- The rest is for CI on this PR.

Replaces the per-dependency archives of the previous commit with the mechanism
#41330 used for the same problem: link()'s lazyObjects, a group the linker may
take from or leave (lld's --start-lib ... --end-lib, /start-lib ... /end-lib
through clang-cl), passed in a response file of its own as -Wl,@<exe>.lazy.rsp
so it reaches the linker as one positional group. A static library's semantics
without the archive: no ar edge and no second copy of the objects. ResolvedDep
.objects and the archiveDeps option are as they were.

Which dependency objects are lazy:

- Windows: the assembler outputs, as in #41330. Their sections are not COMDATs,
so /OPT:REF cannot drop them, and one nothing calls (BoringSSL's AES-GCM-SIV,
what failed the x64 baseline scan) would ship whole. Compiled objects stay
eager; /OPT:REF drops their unreferenced COMDATs.
- Every other link that goes through lld: all of them. --gc-sections and
-dead_strip remove unreferenced code only after LTO has counted its calls, so
a call from a file nothing uses (spake25519.cc calling
x25519_ge_frombytes_vartime) stops the helper being inlined into the one
  caller that ships.
- A native macOS link goes through Apple's ld, which has no such group, and
  takes them as plain objects.

The previous commit's archives also failed the Windows links in CI: the
archiveDeps path names deps/lsqpack/lsqpack.lib, which nothing produces.

Relinking a Linux x64 release build with its recorded command and the 1,042
dependency objects in the group: the binary runs, and ED25519_verify,
VP8Decode and the other affected functions have the sizes they had when CI
linked from the single archive.

The Windows x64 baseline scan failed on aes_gcm_dec_update_vaes_avx512 with
AES / MOVBE / PCLMULQDQ it does not contain. Those instructions are
_aesni_ctr32_ghash_6x, a local label at the top of aesni-gcm-x86_64-win.asm
with no PUBLIC record: a zero-size S_PUB32 gets a synthesized end at the next
named symbol, so the helper was attributed to whichever public lld-link
happened to lay out before that object. The allowlist recorded one such
neighbour (rsaz_1024_gather5_avx2, 'ceiling widened to cover the bleed'), and
a different link layout moved it.

From #41330, which fixed this: the synthesized end never crosses into the next
section contribution, and code no symbol covers is named by its object
(<lib:aesni-gcm-x86_64-win.asm.obj>). The MSVC STL's vectorized
implementations, which sit in other contributions than their exported entry
points, become <lib:libcpmt.lib>. rsaz_1024_gather5_avx2 is back to
[AVX, AVX2].

Also: the link rule's $lazy in the two internal test fixtures that declare
their own link rule (build-timings failed on every Linux lane).

The patched scanner on the Windows x64 profile binary CI built for this PR:
0 violations, PASS. cargo test: 11 pass. test/internal/build-*: 72 pass.

…on the link line (#43704)

### What does this PR do?

Removes `archive-link` build mode and the `libbun-<exe>.a` it produced.
The link takes objects only, with the dependencies' objects as a lazy
group.

**The mode.** #37733 merged CI's `build-cpp` and `build-bun` steps onto
one agent and added `archive-link` for it: every C/C++ object was still
archived into `libbun-<exe>.a`, the link read that archive "exactly as
`rust-and-link` did with the downloaded one", and the archive and
dependency libraries were still uploaded "for reproducing a link
locally". Nothing downloads them: every `artifact download` in
`.buildkite/ci.ts`, `scripts/runner.node.ts` and the release scripts
asks for a zip. Since #43650 they are not enough to reproduce a link
either (the Rust rlibs were never uploaded).

It also meant CI and `--profile=release` linked different inputs: one
archive in CI, 1,176 loose objects locally.

**What the archive was doing for the link.** Relinking a local release
build both ways, with the recorded link command:

| | loose objects | one archive |
| --- | --- | --- |
| objects loaded | 1,176 | 869 |
| functions | 79,374 | 79,366 |
| `.init_array`, `.data`, exports | same | same |

The 307 objects the archive never loaded are dependency files nothing
references (BoringSSL assembly for other platforms, unused libarchive
readers, SPAKE2, …). Loading them anyway has two effects:

- On COFF only COMDAT sections are garbage-collected, so dead dependency
code stays in the binary. The first build of this PR failed the Windows
x64 baseline scan on `aes128gcmsiv_aes_ks` (AVX), from a BoringSSL file
nothing uses.
- On ELF `--gc-sections` removes the dead code, but after LTO has
counted its calls. Eight BoringSSL / zstd / libwebp helpers stopped
being inlined because an unreferenced file also calls them
(`x25519_ge_frombytes_vartime` is called from `spake25519.cc`, so
`ED25519_verify` is 6,360 bytes with a call instead of 20,709 with the
helper inlined).

So what the link needs is library semantics for the dependencies, not
one archive of everything. This uses the mechanism #41330 used for the
same problem: `link()`'s `lazyObjects`, a group the linker may take from
or leave (lld's `--start-lib … --end-lib`, `/start-lib … /end-lib`
through clang-cl), passed in a response file of its own as
`-Wl,@<exe>.lazy.rsp`. A static library's semantics without the archive:
no `ar` edge, no second copy of the objects.

Which dependency objects are lazy:

- **Windows**: the assembler outputs, as in #41330. Their sections are
not COMDATs, so `/OPT:REF` cannot drop them. Compiled objects stay
eager; `/OPT:REF` drops their unreferenced COMDATs.
- **Every other link that goes through lld** (all of CI, including the
cross-linked macOS targets): all of them, which is what keeps the
inlining above.
- **A native macOS link** goes through Apple's `ld`, which has no such
group, and takes them as plain objects.

This is the same for every profile: `--profile=ci-build` is
`--profile=release` with the CI, Buildkite and prebuilt-WebKit settings.

**The baseline scanner.** A different link layout moved one false
positive. `_aesni_ctr32_ghash_6x` is a local label at the top of
`aesni-gcm-x86_64-win.asm` with no PUBLIC record; a zero-size `S_PUB32`
gets a synthesized end at the next named symbol, so the helper was
attributed to whichever public lld-link laid out before that object. The
allowlist recorded one such neighbour (`rsaz_1024_gather5_avx2`,
"ceiling widened to cover the bleed"). From #41330, which fixed this:
the synthesized end never crosses into the next section contribution,
and code no symbol covers is named by its object
(`<lib:aesni-gcm-x86_64-win.asm.obj>`, `<lib:libcpmt.lib>`).

Gone:

- `archive-link`, the big `ar` step, the two upload edges with their
rules and pool, and `BunOutput.uploadStamps`
- `BuildMode`. `Config.mode` stays as the literal `"full"`: it is the
tag that tells a `Config` from a `CodegenConfig`. An unknown `--mode` is
an error where the mode is read
- the one-value `type BuildMode = "build"` in `.buildkite/ci.ts`, with
the parameter that carried it
- three checks for an undefined `output.exe`, which is a plain `string`

Packaging and uploading the zips is gated on `cfg.buildkite`. `/IMPLIB`
stays, with its comment reworded.

### How did you verify your code works?

- `tsc -p scripts/build/tsconfig.json` and `prettier --check` are clean;
`test/js/bun/perf/linker-order.test.ts` passes (its fixture set the
removed mode).
- Configured `--profile=ci-build --buildkite=off`: no `libbun-` archive
edge, no `bk_upload` rules; the `bun-profile` link edge takes bun's 134
objects and the rlibs, and `bun-profile.lazy.rsp` holds the 1,042
dependency objects between `--start-lib` and `--end-lib`.
- Relinked a Linux x64 release build with its recorded link command and
the dependency objects in the lazy group: the binary runs zlib / sqlite
/ argon2 / zstd, and `ED25519_verify`, `VP8Decode` and the other
affected functions have the sizes they had when linked from the single
archive.
- The patched scanner with the updated allowlist on the Windows x64
profile binary CI built for this PR: 0 violations, PASS. `cargo test` in
`scripts/verify-baseline-static`: 11 pass. `test/internal/build-*`: 72
pass.
- Not verified locally: a Windows or macOS link. This PR's CI builds are
the first ones linked this way there;
