I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs. Since it bumps the WebKit engine pin (to a preview tag that the description says should be re-pinned to the merged commit before landing) and pulls in four additional oven-sh/WebKit commits along with the brk #0 change, a human should sign off on the engine bump and confirm the darwin-aarch64 CI lane before merge.
What was reviewed
- The new test follows the sibling patterns in the same describe:
noCoreCmdwrapper, skipIf(isASAN),noReportEnvspread, concurrent stderr drain +proc.exited. prebuiltUrl/prebuiltDestDiralready handleautobuild--prefixed version strings, so the preview tag resolves to the right release URL and cache dir.- Checked that
isMacOSis exported from harness and the macOS-vs-elsewhere branch matches WTF'sCRASH_WITH_INFO()behavior (trap on Darwin,abort()elsewhere) in both debug and release.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR changes two files: scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts (one-line WEBKIT_VERSION bump from commit sha b7f217b4a6… to preview tag autobuild-preview-pr-485-1262c7b5) and test/cli/run/run-crash-handler.test.ts (adds one test plus an isMacOS import). The functional change lives entirely in the WebKit prebuilt — the fork now emits brk #0 instead of brk #0xbb08 on arm64 so macOS 26 delivers SIGTRAP to bun's handler instead of SIGKILLing the process.
Security risks
None identified. The version pin points at an oven-sh/WebKit release tag over HTTPS, same mechanism as before. The test spawns a local child with a crafted BUN_JSC_* env var; no network, no untrusted input.
Level of scrutiny
High. WEBKIT_VERSION is the JavaScriptCore engine pin for every build of bun. Per the PR notes, the preview branch is oven-sh/WebKit main plus this commit, so four unrelated WebKit changes (#476 AssemblerBuffer cap, #442 Windows .pdata/.xdata, #480 CI LLVM install, #481 Windows frame pointers) ride along. Engine bumps are exactly the kind of change a human maintainer should approve, and the description itself instructs "Re-pin to the merged commit before merging" — so the PR is not intended to land in its current form without a follow-up edit.
Other factors
The added test is well-constructed: it lives in the right describe block (isPosix-gated, noCoreCmd available), skips under ASAN like its sibling raise-signal test, spreads noReportEnv, drains stderr concurrently with proc.exited, and asserts message content before signalCode. The autobuild- prefix is already handled by prebuiltUrl (strips/keeps the tag correctly) and prebuiltDestDir (uses the full tag past the prefix as the cache key). No issues found in the diff itself; the deferral is purely because engine-pin bumps and the explicit "re-pin before merge" note put this outside the auto-approve bar.
|
On the engine bump: the sequence is the usual one for a WebKit change. oven-sh/WebKit#485 merges first, then this PR moves CI state on the preview pin so far: both darwin build jobs passed, the darwin test jobs are still running, and the only failures in the build are retried flakes in unrelated files. I will update the status comment above when the darwin-aarch64 test job finishes, since that job is the check for this change. |

I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs in the test or build-script changes. Because it's a WebKit engine pin bump — pulling in four ride-along oven-sh/WebKit commits and currently pointing at a preview tag that the description says must move to the merged commit before landing — a human should sign off on the final pin.
What was reviewed
- The new test follows the file's conventions:
noCoreCmdwrapper,noReportEnv, stderr drained before assertions,.concurrent, ASAN skip matches the sibling tests' rationale. prebuiltUrl/prebuiltDestDirinscripts/build/deps/webkit.tsalready handleautobuild--prefixed version strings, so the preview tag resolves to a valid release URL and a distinct cache dir.- The
isMacOSbranch on the expected message/signal matches howRELEASE_ASSERTcompiles per platform (trap on Darwin,abort()elsewhere) in both debug and release.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
Two files: scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts changes WEBKIT_VERSION from commit b7f217b4a6… to the preview tag autobuild-preview-pr-485-1262c7b5, and test/cli/run/run-crash-handler.test.ts adds one test (plus two harness imports) that triggers a real JSC RELEASE_ASSERT via BUN_JSC_structureHeapSizeInKB=3072 and asserts the crash handler produced a report and the expected terminal signal.
Security risks
None identified. The build script change only alters which prebuilt WebKit tarball is downloaded from oven-sh/WebKit releases; the URL construction path is unchanged and already handles autobuild--prefixed tags. The test spawns a child of the bun binary under test with a fixed env var and no user-controlled input.
Level of scrutiny
High. WEBKIT_VERSION is the JavaScriptCore engine pin — every Bun build downloads and links the release it names. Beyond the targeted brk #0 fix, the bump rides along four other oven-sh/WebKit commits (#442, #476, #480, #481). The PR description itself states the pin must move from the preview tag to the merged oven-sh/WebKit commit before merging, so this PR is by construction not in its final state. Engine bumps fall under the repo's "Dependencies & vendoring" review guidance and are the kind of change a maintainer should explicitly approve.
Other factors
The test itself is well-constructed: it lives in the correct isPosix-gated describe block, uses the file-scope noCoreCmd so the coredump-upload CI lanes don't flag the deliberate crash, spreads noReportEnv so the deliberate crash isn't uploaded, drains stderr concurrently with proc.exited, and skips under ASAN where signal handlers aren't installed. CI on the preview pin (build 102710) was reported green across 181 jobs including the macOS 26.4 arm64 shard that this fix targets. No prior claude[bot] review exists on this PR.
|
Same outcome as the first review pass, nothing to change in the diff. The human sign-off it asks for is the intended path: oven-sh/WebKit#485 merges, this PR re-pins to that commit, CI runs once more, then a maintainer merges. CI on the rebased head (build 103220): 176 of 181 jobs passed so far, both darwin builds included; the darwin test jobs are the ones still running. |

Line 6 selects the WebKit PR preview artifact. Before merge, replace it with the immutable 40-hex SHA for the merged WebKit commit and update the matching process.versions assertion. The current URL-format test accepts every autobuild-* value, so it will not detect a stale preview pin.

Agreed, and it is the planned last step: the pin moves to the merged oven-sh/WebKit commit once oven-sh/WebKit#485 lands, and CI runs once more on it. It cannot happen earlier because that commit does not exist yet. Two notes on the rest: there is no process.versions assertion on the WebKit version in this repo (grep -rn versions.webkit test/ finds nothing), and a stale preview pin cannot rot silently. GitHub deletes the preview release when the WebKit PR merges or closes, and scripts/build/download.ts turns the resulting 404 into a build error that names this line and says to re-pin. This thread stays open until the re-pin.

@robobun, verified. scripts/build/download.ts detects a 404 for an autobuild-preview-pr-* WebKit release. It reports scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts and instructs the user to set WEBKIT_VERSION to the merged main SHA.
There is no process.versions.webkit assertion. The existing URL test intentionally accepts preview tags.
The requested process.versions update and extra stale-preview validation do not apply. The remaining valid action is the planned re-pin after oven-sh/WebKit#485 merges and the final CI run. Keeping this thread open for that action is correct.

I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs. The bun-side diff (the new test and the two harness imports) looks correct and matches the file's conventions. Because it bumps the WebKit engine pin — currently to a preview tag that the description says must be re-pinned to the merged oven-sh/WebKit#485 commit before landing — a maintainer should coordinate the final pin and merge.
What was reviewed:
- The new test:
noCoreCmd/noReportEnvreuse,skipIf(isASAN).concurrentchaining (used elsewhere), stderr/exited drained together, per-platform signal/message assertions. WEBKIT_VERSIONhandling:prebuiltUrl/prebuiltDestDiralready special-caseautobuild-prefixes, so the preview tag resolves correctly.- Confirmed
isASAN/isMacOSexist inharness.ts.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
Two files: scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts changes the WEBKIT_VERSION string from a commit SHA to the preview-build tag autobuild-preview-pr-485-9b04f938, and test/cli/run/run-crash-handler.test.ts gains one new test plus two harness imports (isASAN, isMacOS). The actual behavioral fix — changing WTF's arm64 crash instruction from brk #0xbb08 to brk #0 so macOS 26 delivers SIGTRAP instead of SIGKILL — lives entirely in oven-sh/WebKit#485; nothing in this repo's compiled code changes.
Security risks
None identified. The version string is consumed only by the build system's prebuilt-download URL/cache-key logic, which already handles autobuild--prefixed tags. The test spawns bun -e 1 under a ulimit -c 0 shell wrapper with a JSC env var; no network, no untrusted input.
Level of scrutiny
High, because this is an engine pin bump: every prebuilt WebKit binary on every platform changes. Even though the WebKit-side diff is described as a two-constant change under USE(BUN_JSC_ADDITIONS), engine bumps are the kind of change that maintainers coordinate (WebKit PR merges → re-pin to merged SHA → CI on final pin → merge). The PR description and robobun status comments explicitly say the same. The bun-side test change on its own is low-risk and well-scoped.
Other factors
- The pin is currently a preview tag. The PR description's first line says "Re-pin to the merged commit before merging", so as written this is not yet in its final mergeable state.
- The new test follows the surrounding file's conventions exactly: it sits inside the existing
describe.if(isPosix)block, reusesnoCoreCmdandnoReportEnv, uses--debug-crash-handler-use-trace-string, drainsstderrconcurrently withproc.exited, and asserts stderr content beforesignalCode. Thetest.skipIf(isASAN).concurrentchaining pattern is already used intest/regression/issue/30205.test.ts. prebuiltUrl()andprebuiltDestDir()inwebkit.tsalready branch onstartsWith("autobuild-"), so the preview tag round-trips through the download URL and cache-dir key without issue.- No prior
claude[bot]reviews on this PR; deferring once with a short summary so the maintainer doing the final pin/merge has a record that the bun-side diff was checked.

I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs. The test addition is clean and follows the file's conventions. Since this is a WebKit engine bump — and one that's still on a preview pin pending oven-sh/WebKit#485 — a maintainer should sign off on the upstream change and the final re-pin.
What was reviewed:

noCoreCmd,noReportEnv,skipIf(isASAN), andtest.concurrentconsistently with sibling tests; drains stderr before exit; asserts specific report text and signal per platform. BUN_JSC_structureHeapSizeInKB=3072as the assertion trigger — checked that it fails a realRELEASE_ASSERTin both debug and release paths, so the expected signal doesn't diverge by build type.- The
isMacOSbranch vs.isPosixdescribe gate: Linux/FreeBSD getabort(), macOS gets the trap — matches WTF'sCRASH_WITH_INFO()platform split.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
Two files: scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts swaps WEBKIT_VERSION from the merged SHA aea1f010b6… to the preview tag autobuild-preview-pr-485-9b04f938, and test/cli/run/run-crash-handler.test.ts gains one test plus two harness imports. The bun-repo diff is tiny, but the substantive change is the engine: the preview build carries oven-sh/WebKit#485, which changes WTF_FATAL_CRASH_INST / WTF_FATAL_CRASH_CODE on arm64 from brk #0xbb08 to brk #0 so macOS 26 delivers SIGTRAP instead of SIGKILL and bun's crash handler can print a report.
Security risks
None identified. The engine change alters the immediate operand of a crash instruction; nothing in bun or JSC decodes that immediate (the PR description enumerates every consumer). The test spawns a local child with a controlled env var and no network I/O.
Level of scrutiny
High — not because of the diff in this repo, but because WEBKIT_VERSION is the JS engine pin. Every WebKit bump replaces the JavaScriptCore build that ships in bun, so it needs the full CI matrix on the final (merged-SHA) pin and a maintainer's eyes on the upstream diff. The PR title, description, and the open CodeRabbit thread all already say the preview tag must be replaced with the merged SHA before merge; that step is still pending.
Other factors
The test itself is well-constructed: it lives in the right describe.if(isPosix) block, uses the file-scope noCoreCmd wrapper so the coredump-upload lane doesn't flag it, spreads noReportEnv correctly, skips under ASAN (where signal handlers aren't installed), and asserts platform-specific report text plus the terminal signal. stdout is not piped separately but -e 1 produces none, and stderr is drained concurrently with exited. The comment above the test explains the mechanism precisely and cites the upstream PR.
I'm not approving because (a) the pin is still a preview artifact that the author intends to replace, and (b) engine bumps fall under the "Dependencies & vendoring" category that calls for maintainer review of what the new pin actually contains — that content lives in oven-sh/WebKit#485, outside this diff.

I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs. Deferring to a maintainer since it bumps the JS engine pin and, as the title/description note, still needs the final re-pin from the preview tag to the merged oven-sh/WebKit#485 commit before it can land.
What was reviewed
- The new test: sits under
describe.if(isPosix), usesnoCoreCmd/noReportEnv, drains stderr concurrently withproc.exited, and branches the expected message/signal onisMacOS— matches the file's conventions. test.skipIf(isASAN)is correct (ASAN builds skip signal-handler installation), and stdout is piped so the child can't block on a full pipe.WEBKIT_VERSIONchange: theautobuild-prefix is handled byprebuiltUrl/prebuiltDestDir, anddownload.tsfails the build loudly if the preview release disappears.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
Two files: scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts (a one-line WEBKIT_VERSION bump to the autobuild-preview-pr-485-1336a391 tag) and test/cli/run/run-crash-handler.test.ts (adds isASAN/isMacOS imports and one new test that triggers a real JSC RELEASE_ASSERT via BUN_JSC_structureHeapSizeInKB=3072 and asserts the crash handler produces a report). The engine change itself lives in oven-sh/WebKit#485 and is not part of this diff.
Security risks
None identified. The test spawns a local child with a controlled env and reads its stderr; no network, no untrusted input parsing. The version bump downloads a prebuilt from the oven-sh/WebKit releases page, same mechanism as every other pin.
Level of scrutiny
High — this changes the JavaScript engine pin, which affects every code path in the runtime. The PR description states the preview is exactly main's current pin (c148a12dd8) plus the one brk #0 commit, and CI has run green on earlier previews of the same two-file WebKit diff. Even so, engine bumps are the kind of change a maintainer signs off on, and the standard workflow here (merge the WebKit PR → re-pin to the immutable SHA → final CI run → merge) is explicitly called out as unfinished in both the title and the open review thread on webkit.ts:6.
Other factors
- The PR title says "preview" and the description opens with "Re-pin to the merged commit before merging" — approving now would contradict the author's own stated merge precondition.
- There is an open inline thread on
webkit.ts:6tracking the re-pin; that thread is intentionally unresolved. - The new test follows the file's harness conventions (
noCoreCmdwrapper for the coredump lane,noReportEnvto avoid uploading deliberate crashes, test.concurrent, await usingon the spawned process, concurrent pipe draining). TheisASANskip matches the comment that ASAN builds install no signal handlers, consistent with the neighbouring tests' rationale. - No prior review from me on this PR.

I reviewed this PR and found no bugs. Per the PR's own plan, this is gated on oven-sh/WebKit#485 landing and the pin moving from the preview tag to the merged SHA, so a maintainer should take it from here.
What was reviewed:
- The new test's trigger (
BUN_JSC_structureHeapSizeInKB=3072) reaches a realRELEASE_ASSERTinStructureMemoryManageron both debug and release paths, and the expected signal/message branches matchCRASH_WITH_INFO()'s per-platform lowering. - Test hygiene:
noCoreCmdwrapper,noReportEnv, concurrent stderr drain +exited, skipIf(isASAN)— all consistent with the file's existing patterns. - The preview-tag pin is self-obsoleting via
prebuiltDownloadError()inscripts/build/download.ts, so it cannot rot silently.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
Two files: scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts swaps WEBKIT_VERSION from the merged SHA cb61607f1a… to the preview tag autobuild-preview-pr-485-2cae5307, and test/cli/run/run-crash-handler.test.ts gains one new test (plus two harness imports) that drives a real JSC RELEASE_ASSERT and asserts the crash handler catches it. The substantive behavior change lives in oven-sh/WebKit#485 (arm64 WTF_FATAL_CRASH_INST / BBreakpointTrap() → brk #0), not in this repo.
Security risks
None identified. The pin change downloads a prebuilt from the same oven-sh/WebKit releases endpoint the build already trusts; the test only spawns the local bunExe() with an env var that fails a startup assertion. No new network, filesystem, or auth surface.
Level of scrutiny
This is a WebKit engine bump. Even though the WebKit-side diff is two constants and the PR description exhaustively rules out consumers of the old immediate (VM traps, Wasm faults, LLInt range checks, ARM64Assembler::isBrk, libpas under USE_MIMALLOC), engine pins are the canonical case for maintainer sign-off in this repo. The PR is also explicitly not merge-ready: the description and the open CodeRabbit thread both say the preview tag must be replaced with the merged oven-sh/WebKit SHA before landing, and that step cannot happen until the upstream PR merges.
Other factors
- The test itself is well-constructed against the repo's review rules: it awaits the observable condition (stderr +
exiteddrained together), asserts specific message strings and the exact terminal signal per platform, wraps innoCoreCmdso the coredump-upload lane doesn't flag it, spreadsnoReportEnv(which spreadsbunEnv), and skips under ASAN where no signal handlers are installed. It sits inside the existingisPosix-gated describe, so Windows is correctly excluded. - CI evidence in the thread (build 102710 on the first preview) shows the file passing on the macOS 26.4 arm64 shard, which is the platform this fix targets.
- No prior
claude[bot]review exists on this PR; robobun's status comments already document the re-pin as the remaining step, so this defer is kept brief to avoid restating the thread.

Linux and macOS x64 print a report.brk #0xbb08(wtf/Assertions.h:291). macOS 26 kills the process on that immediate before it delivers SIGTRAP, so bun'ssigactionhandler never runs, during startup or later (JSC owns a Mach port forEXC_BAD_ACCESSonly).Fix
brk #0:WTF_FATAL_CRASH_CODEandWTF_FATAL_CRASH_INSTunderUSE(BUN_JSC_ADDITIONS), plus bmalloc'sBBreakpointTrap(). Every arm64 crash site, bun's own C++ included, derives from them.brk #0reaches a SIGTRAP handler on the macOS 26 CI machines (thetraptest hook uses it), WebKit's ASAN configuration already uses these values, and nothing reads the immediate back.RELEASE_ASSERTon every POSIX platform and expects the report:Trap instructionand SIGTRAP on macOS,abort() calledand SIGABRT elsewhere. On the old pin, darwin-aarch64 gets SIGKILL and an empty stderr.test/cli/run/run-crash-handler.test.tson Linux (release canary, andbun bdon this pin), and on CI's macOS 26.4 arm64 shard with this pin: 20 pass, 0 fail, the new test among them (Notes). Background
RELEASE_ASSERTisCRASH_WITH_INFO(): on Darwin an inlineasmofWTF_FATAL_CRASH_INST, elsewhereabort().WEBKIT_VERSION(scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts) is the engine pin: the build downloads that oven-sh/WebKit release. A WebKit PR's preview release pins the same way.Notes
Evidence for the cause (gathered on the darwin-aarch64 build of #39967, macOS 26.6.2; the CI lane runs 26.4, with
structureHeapSizeInKB=32768, which fails the assert at:147instead): the.ipsreport for the killed process saysEXC_BREAKPOINT,brk 47880(0xbb08), signal SIGKILL, x0 = 0x93 = 147 (the line numberWTFCrashWithInfoputs in x0), and no handler frames. A 20 line C program that installs a SIGTRAP handler and executesbrk #0xbb08is killed the same way. The same program withbrk #0runs its handler. There is no macOS machine in this environment, so the arm64 side of the test is proven by CI only.Post-startup crashes:
activateSignalHandlersForis only called forSignal::AccessFault(VMTraps.cpp:208,WasmFaultSignalHandler.cpp:143), so the process never owns anEXC_BREAKPOINTport and a laterbrkis handled by the kernel like the one insideJSC::initialize(). The macOS arm64 "Trap instruction" reports Sentry still receives must come from macOS before 26, or from other immediates (__builtin_trap()isbrk #1).What the macros feed:
CRASH(), the inlineWTFCrashWithInfo, theWTFCrashWithInfoImploverloads inAssertions.cpp,JSLock.cpp,MacroAssemblerARM64::breakpoint()and its default argument,MacroAssemblerARM64.cpp, the offlineasmbreakand the LLInt spacer. Nothing decodes the immediate:ARM64Assembler::isBrkmasks it out and has no callers, VM traps and Wasm faults are access faults (replaceWithVMHaltisdc zva xzr) handled by PC lookup, and LLInt code is recognised by address range. libpas has a third copy of the instruction, but bun's WebKit builds useUSE_MIMALLOC, under whichLIBPAS_ENABLEDis 0 andpas_utils.ccompiles to nothing. Windows arm64 is unaffected either way: bun's VEH (classify_exception_windows) reports access violations, illegal instructions, misalignment and stack overflow only, so abrkis not reported there with either immediate, and neither 0 nor 0xbb08 is an immediate Windows' own intrinsics use (__debugbreak()isbrk #0xF000). Preprocessing a TU against the prebuiltcmakeconfig.hof the old pin gives"brk #0x0"/0x0with the change,"brk #0xbb08"without it, and the upstream values withUSE_BUN_JSC_ADDITIONSset to 0.The preview is oven-sh/WebKit

Each re-pin onto main's new engine changed nothing in the WebKit diff.Alternatives not taken:
CRASH()asabort()on Darwin (bun handles SIGABRT, but frame 0 of the report would be insideabort()instead of at the assert, and it diverges more from upstream), and a Mach exception port forEXC_BREAKPOINTin bun's crash handler (a lot of signal safety sensitive code for the same result).Test details: it lives in the
SIGABRT/SIGTRAP are caught by the crash handlerdescribe, which isisPosix(Windows does not reportabort()orint3yet, #38860), and uses the file'snoCoreCmdwrapper (the child dies throughSIG_DFL, so the coredump-upload lanes needulimit -c 0). The expected signal is the same in debug and release builds: a failingRELEASE_ASSERTin a debug build goes throughASSERT, which also ends inCRASH_WITH_INFO(). CI on this pin (build 102710): the darwin aarch64 test job is two shards, one on macOS 15.7.7 and one on macOS 26.4. The crash handler file ran on the 26.4 shard: 20 pass, 7 skip, 0 fail. The 7 skips are the Linux debug and Windows tests, so the new test ran and passed there, as did the tworaised SIGABRT/SIGTRAPtests. Results here (Linux x64):USE_SYSTEM_BUN=1 bun teston the 1.4.0 canary passes it (abort() called, SIGABRT).bun bd teston this pin (process.versions.webkitispreview-pr-485-1262c7b5, and the shippedwtf/Assertions.hcarries the change): this file 17 pass, 10 skip, 0 fail;test/js/bun/jsc/(without the slowdomjitfile) plustest/js/bun/util/inspect.test.js135 pass, 1 skip, 0 fail.test/js/web/fetch/fetch.test.tshas failures in this container, but the same tests fail the same way (ConnectionRefusedtolocalhost) on the old pin, checked by switching the pin back and relinking. #39967 adds a test with the same trigger, skipped on Apple Silicon because of this bug. Once both are in, that skip can go. The two branches touch the same import line, so whichever lands second needs a one line rebase. Rebased once onto main after #39953 landed: it movednoCoreCmdto file scope and removed theraised SIGABRT/SIGTRAPtests next to which this test sat, so the resolution kept main's version of both and re-added only the new test and its two imports.no test proof · iteration 12 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/cli/run/run-crash-handler.test.ts
