Problem

  • bun aborts at startup when JSC cannot reserve its Structure heap: abort() called in JSC::StructureMemoryManager::StructureMemoryManager(), then "Bun has crashed". Sentry BUN-4NF7.
  • The cause is a limit such as ulimit -v or ulimit -d. Two asserts fire: StructureAlignedMemoryAllocator.cpp:123 (the OS refuses every size) and :150 (mimalloc refuses the 32 MB that fit).

Fix

  • [JSC] Let Bun report a Structure heap reservation that failed WebKit#760: the constructor calls Bun__structureHeapReservationFailed with the sizes it tried, before each assert.
  • src/crash_handler/lib.rs defines it. When a limit explains the failure, it prints the sizes and each finite ulimit value, and exits 1. Otherwise it returns and the assert fires.
  • The earlier probe is gone: crash_handler() and bun_jsc::initialize match main.
  • Verified: 10 new tests in test/js/bun/jsc/heapStats-mimalloc.test.ts fail on main and on bun 1.4.2. Self-reviewed: 25 concerns raised, 20 addressed (Notes).

Background

  • The Structure heap is one address range for every Structure. JSC reserves it at startup: 4 GB, then half, down to 32 MB.
  • The function is a weak symbol in WebKit. The jsc shell does not define it and keeps the asserts.
  • Considered the crash handler probe (the earlier revision). It guessed after the SIGABRT and was wrong both ways.

Downsides

  • Do not merge yet: WEBKIT_VERSION is a preview build. Merge [JSC] Let Bun report a Structure heap reservation that failed WebKit#760, move the pin, then merge this at once. Without this function, a bun on that WebKit does not link on macOS.
  • Release, Linux x64: .text +2,640 bytes (374 are a test binding). The constructor runs 96 instructions on success, 95 before.
  • BUN_JSC_structureHeapSizeInKB=32768 now exits 1 with an error and sends no crash report.
Notes

Output. Default sizes under ulimit -d 131072, then a 2 TB request under ulimit -v 8388608, then BUN_JSC_structureHeapSizeInKB=32768 with no limit:

error: could not reserve 64 MB of address space for the JavaScript heap (tried 4 GB down to 32 MB, and 32 MB is too small to use)
note: 'ulimit -d' is 131072 KB, raise or remove that limit

error: could not reserve 16 GB of address space for the JavaScript heap (tried 2048 GB down to 16 GB)
note: 'ulimit -v' is 8388608 KB, raise or remove that limit

error: 32 MB of address space is too small for the JavaScript heap
note: BUN_JSC_structureHeapSizeInKB must be at least 65536

With no finite limit on Linux the note states vm.overcommit_memory when it is 2, and points at the sandbox otherwise. The message is one write through the raw stderr writer, so it needs no Output source on the thread that starts JSC.

What the function treats as a limit. The OS refused every size: always. mimalloc refused the size that fit, and that size is at most mimalloc's smallest arena (mi_arena_min_size(), 32 MiB): the range is too small, so the limit that refused the larger sizes is the cause. mimalloc refused a range that is large enough: on Windows the commit of its bookkeeping failed, which is the commit limit. On other platforms that commit cannot fail, so it is a bug. The function returns, JSC fails its assertion, and bun reports the crash as before.

When mi_manage_os_memory_ex returns false. mi_manage_os_memory_ex2 (vendor/mimalloc/src/arena.c) returns false for a null start, for a range that is too small after alignment, for a range under MI_ARENA_MIN_SIZE (32 MiB), and when mi_arena_initialize fails for the first arena (the meta-data commit fails, or there are too many arenas). JSC's call reaches the third case from the 32 MB size: it keeps one block for StructureID 0, so mimalloc gets 32704 KiB and needs 32768. MIMALLOC_SHOW_ERRORS=1 prints cannot use OS memory since it is not large enough (size 32704 KiB, minimum required is 32768 KiB). Every size from 64 MB up passes. On Windows the meta-data commit is the case that can fail for a large range.

Which assert (the 1.4.0 event). In the 1.4.0 x64 binary, frame 0x17ffc20 is the return address of the one call WTFCrashWithInfo in the constructor. The hasOneBitSet assert (needs a user set structureHeapSizeInKB) and the mi_manage_os_memory_ex assert share it. The asserts with extra arguments compile to a direct call abort@plt, with no WTFCrashWithInfo frame. The Sentry trace has that frame.

Measurements. Linux x64 release builds (ThinLTO, the codegen CI ships). A is the merge base (8ba82c3) with its WebKit (b1e30d08, the parent of the WebKit change). B is this branch with the preview build (353631fb).

  • size: text 106,400,297 to 106,402,937 (+2,640). data 115,352 and bss 1,823,304 in both. readelf -SW: .text +2,640, and .rodata, .data, .got and .rela.dyn +0. The stripped bun is 106,546,952 bytes in both. nm -S: the function is 1,602 bytes plus a 55 byte closure, its size formatter 202, the test binding 374, and the JSC constructor goes from 914 to 989.
  • Dynamic relocations: 443 in both. The symbol resolves in the binary (nm: t Bun__structureHeapReservationFailed).
  • Syscalls for bun -e 1: 221 in both, mmap 22, prlimit64 7 (gdb catch syscall, 3 of 3 runs identical).
  • Constructor on success: 95 to 96 instructions with no limit, 188 in both under ulimit -v 400000 (gdb nexti count, 3 of 3 runs identical). The extra instruction is one register move.
  • src/jsc/lib.rs has no diff against main. In src/crash_handler/lib.rs the diff only adds lines.
  • After the last refused size: 2 prlimit64, 1 write, then exit_group(1). A runs 125 syscalls there, 2 of them tgkill. At ulimit -d 16384 the whole message still prints.
  • bun --watch x.js with a 2 TB request under ulimit -v 8388608: 1,875 crash banners in 3 s on A. B prints the error once and exits 1.

Every limit. bun -e 1 under ulimit -v and under ulimit -d, 96 to 4096 MiB in 32 MiB steps (126 limits each). A aborts at 16 ulimit -v limits (128 to 352, 1152 to 1248, 2176 to 2272 MiB) and at 14 ulimit -d limits (96 to 256, 1056 to 1152, 2080 to 2176 MiB). B aborts at none and prints the error at the same 30. Under about 100 MiB of ulimit -v both builds die before main.

Real bugs keep their report. Six triggers by six limits. A aborts in 32 of 36 cells. B exits 1 with the error in 20 of them. The other 12 are BUN_JSC_structureHeapSizeInKB=3072 (the power of two assert at :110) and BUN_JSC_jitMemoryReservationAddress=4096 (an assert in ExecutableAllocator.cpp). They print the crash report on B under every limit. Under gdb, a forced return from the function makes JSC abort at its assertion.

Self-review. 25 concerns, 20 addressed. Left as they are: the preview pin, which moves when oven-sh/WebKit#760 merges. The sizes in the message are JSC's, and Linux maps twice that for each. The cmake list keeps the gate that Bun__reportUnhandledError has. A jsc shell built with assertions prints isManaged for the mimalloc assert. The tests assume that the test process has no ulimit -v or ulimit -d of its own.

Tests. Four tests call the function through bun:internal-for-testing and compare the whole stderr and the exit status. They run on every OS and under ASAN, so bun bd test runs them. Six more run the real path in JSC on release builds: ulimit -v, ulimit -d and both at 8 GB with a 2 TB request, the default sizes under ulimit -d 131072, BUN_JSC_structureHeapSizeInKB=32768, and the same option in bun build with a macro, which starts JSC on a pool thread. The four ulimit tests are Linux only. The release tests skip under ASAN and on debug builds: JSC's allocator is not mimalloc there, and an ASAN build does not start under these limits. The note for vm.overcommit_memory=2 has no test. I checked it by hand with a bind mount over the sysctl file. All 10 fail on a release build of the merge base and on bun 1.4.2.

Platforms. I ran Linux x64 only. cargo check -p bun_crash_handler passes for the Windows, macOS, FreeBSD, Android and musl targets. The ulimit -d note is Linux only: FreeBSD always has a finite data limit and does not charge a mapping to it.

Landing order. On Mach-O an undefined weak symbol is a link error unless the link passes -U. So a bun tree that pins a WebKit with oven-sh/WebKit#760 needs this function to link on macOS. Linux and Windows link without it and keep the asserts. The function can also land first by itself: it does nothing until JSC calls it.

Related. oven-sh/WebKit#586 and #41900 fit the startup reservations to RLIMIT_AS. They print nothing, and :123 stays reachable (for example under ulimit -d). #586 replaces the :150 assert with a fallback. When both are in, the second call in WebKit, the branches for reserved != 0 here and the tests that use BUN_JSC_structureHeapSizeInKB=32768 go away. #39985 is the Windows counterpart of the earlier revision. With this change the failure exits before the crash handler runs, so its probe cannot fire for this constructor. #39641 has the same shape for file descriptors: the failure site calls a function that prints an error and exits.

Not in this PR. Exhaustion outside this constructor still crashes: WTF::fastMalloc, Rust handle_alloc_error, and the callers of RELEASE_ASSERT_RESOURCE_AVAILABLE. bun --watch still restarts without bound for other crashes before the entry point runs. The JIT pool and the OSAllocator fatal paths are not changed.

The earlier revision. It set Action::InitializeJsc around JSCInitialize and, on a crash, mapped 128 MB to guess if address space was short. A review measured that guess wrong in both directions, so the report now comes from the code that knows.

Walkthrough

The JSC initialization path now marks initialization in the crash handler. On Unix, the handler probes whether it can reserve 128 MB of address space and reports an initialization error if the probe fails. Tests cover address-space limits and unexplained initialization crashes.

Changes

JavaScriptCore initialization diagnostics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track initialization and diagnose address-space failures
src/sys/lib.rs, src/crash_handler/lib.rs, src/jsc/lib.rs
The Unix resource enum adds AS. JSC initialization sets the InitializeJsc action. The crash handler probes a 128 MB reservation and, if it fails, reports the soft address-space limit when available and exits with status 1.
Test initialization failure outcomes
test/cli/run/run-crash-handler.test.ts
POSIX tests check address-space initialization failures and unexplained initialization crashes. The test harness adds an ASAN import and a helper that disables core dumps.

Status: reworked, waiting for oven-sh/WebKit#760. Do not merge before the WebKit pin is a merged commit.

The report now comes from JSC. oven-sh/WebKit#760 makes StructureMemoryManager call Bun__structureHeapReservationFailed when the reservation fails. That function prints the error and exits with status 1 when a limit explains the failure. The crash handler probe of the earlier revision is gone.

Reproduction on a release build of main (Linux x64): sh -c 'ulimit -d 131072; exec bun -e 1' and BUN_JSC_structureHeapSizeInKB=32768 bun -e 1. Both abort in JSC::initialize() with the crash report of BUN-4NF7. With this branch the first prints the error with the ulimit -d value and the second prints that 32 MB is too small. Both exit 1.

Landing order: merge oven-sh/WebKit#760, move WEBKIT_VERSION here to that commit, then merge this. A bun tree that pins that WebKit without this function does not link on macOS.

I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs. Because it adds a new early-exit path inside the signal-handler crash flow (mmap/getrlimit probe + formatted output before PANICKING is incremented), a maintainer look at the crash-handler placement would still be worthwhile.

Checked: c_int import is already cfg(not(windows))-gated so the new cfg(unix) FLAGS constants compile everywhere; bun_crash_handler is already a workspace dep of bun_jsc; the pretty_error! + Global::exit(1) shape matches the existing fd-exhaustion handling right below it; the probe runs before PANICKING.fetch_add so Global::exit won't park.

Extended reasoning...

Overview

Three files: src/crash_handler/lib.rs gains an Action::InitializeJsc variant, a hook in crash() at PANIC_STAGE == 0 that — when that action is set — probes for 128 MB of address space via mmap/munmap and, on failure, prints a ulimit -v error via pretty_error! and calls Global::exit(1) instead of producing a crash report. src/jsc/lib.rs wraps the JSCInitialize FFI call in a scoped_action(Action::InitializeJsc) guard. test/cli/run/run-crash-handler.test.ts adds two tests (Linux-only ulimit -v scan; a BUN_JSC_structureHeapSizeInKB=3072 case that must still crash-report).

Security risks

None identified. The new code reads RLIMIT_AS and does an anonymous mmap/munmap probe, all from process-local state with no external input.

Level of scrutiny

High. The crash handler is the last line of defense and this inserts new behavior on the SIGABRT path inside a signal handler — including formatted output and Global::exit (which runs atexit-style flushing). The author's reasoning is careful (single-threaded startup, synchronous abort(), check placed before PANICKING increments so Global::exit doesn't park), and the pretty_error! + Global::exit(1) pattern already exists in the same file for fd exhaustion. But a maintainer should confirm this is the right layer versus, say, having JSCInitialize return failure, and that calling mmap from the SIGABRT handler at this stage is acceptable.

Other factors

  • Cross-platform cfg gating checked: c_int is imported under cfg(not(windows)) (line 461), and the new can_reserve_address_space/address_space_limit are cfg(unix) with linux/android sub-branches for MAP_NORESERVE and the vm.overcommit_memory hint. On Windows the outer fn body is empty, so the crash reports as before.
  • bun_core::ffi::zeroed exists and is used for libc::rlimit.
  • bun_crash_handler is already a dep of bun_jsc (Cargo.toml line 30), so the new scoped_action call introduces no dependency edge.
  • Tests: the ulimit scan is Linux-only, skips ASAN (correctly — bun doesn't install signal handlers there), sets ulimit -c 0 to avoid leaked cores, and reads stderr before asserting. The scan can spawn up to ~60 short-lived shells on an unfixed build; on the fixed build it should exit on the first iteration. The second test asserts "Crashed while initializing JavaScriptCore" appears for a non-address-space crash, exercising the fall-through path.
  • The PR description documents cross-target cargo check runs including windows-msvc, darwin, freebsd, android, and musl.

On the placement question from the review: the crash handler is the only layer that can see this. The assert is inside JSC::initialize(), which has no failure return, and a check before the call is not enough because bun's own 1 GiB mimalloc arena and JSC's 1 GiB JIT pool are reserved between any such check and the Structure heap (the upper two ulimit -v windows in the description). The WebKit half that can move to the source is oven-sh/WebKit#483.

On running the probe inside the handler: it is one anonymous mmap and one munmap, nothing is written through the mapping, and it runs before PANICKING is incremented. The crash it reacts to is a synchronous abort() on the thread that is initializing JSC, so Global::exit runs in the same situation as the fd exhaustion exits below it.

I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs. Because it adds an mmap probe and formatted-output path inside the signal-driven crash handler (PANIC_STAGE == 0), a human look at the placement and signal-safety trade-off would still be worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • Action::InitializeJsc wiring: the Display match is exhaustive with the new arm; scoped_action guard drops after JSCInitialize returns.
  • Probe ordering: runs before PANICKING is incremented, so Global::exit(1) takes the same non-parking path as the fd-exhaustion exits nearby.
  • cfg(unix) gating: on Windows the body is empty (falls through to the normal report + "Crashed while initializing JavaScriptCore" line); libc::MAP_ANONYMOUS/RLIMIT_AS availability on the checked targets.
  • Tests: hoisted noCoreCmd is only called from isPosix-gated blocks; piped stdout is undrained but bun -e 1 produces none before JSC init aborts, matching existing patterns in this file.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

Three files: src/crash_handler/lib.rs adds an Action::InitializeJsc enum variant and, when a crash arrives with that action set, an address-space probe (mmap/munmap 128 MB) that converts the crash into a user-facing ulimit -v error and Global::exit(1). src/jsc/lib.rs sets that scoped action around JSCInitialize. test/cli/run/run-crash-handler.test.ts gains two tests (Linux release: walk ulimit -v up until the error appears; POSIX non-ASAN non-Apple-Silicon: a JSC-init crash with plenty of address space is still reported) and hoists noCoreCmd to file scope for reuse.

Security risks

None identified. The new code only runs after JSC has already aborted, reads RLIMIT_AS, and prints to stderr. No user-controlled input reaches the probe or the format string.

Level of scrutiny

High. The crash handler is the last-line-of-defence code path — a mistake here can mask real crashes, hang the process during a crash, or make the handler itself re-enter. This change deliberately calls mmap/munmap and pretty_error! (formatted stderr write) from inside a SIGABRT handler before PANIC_STAGE/PANICKING are advanced. The PR justifies this convincingly (synchronous abort() on the initializing thread; mmap/munmap are async-signal-safe; Global::exit precedent in handle_root_error right below), and the fallback behavior is unchanged when the probe succeeds. But it is exactly the kind of layering call — "is the crash handler the right place for this, vs. a pre-flight check or the WebKit-side fix in oven-sh/WebKit#483 alone" — that a maintainer should sign off on. The comment-cop bot flagged the design several times (all now resolved with shortened comments and a rationale), which reinforces that a human should confirm the placement.

Other factors

  • The 128 MB constant is derived from StructureAlignedMemoryAllocator.cpp internals (64 MB smallest accepted rung, reserved as size + alignment). It will drift silently if JSC's reservation strategy changes; the derivation comment is the only tether.
  • The ulimit -v sweep test spawns once on the fixed build per the PR notes, but up to ~60 times on a future build where the windows shift — worth a maintainer glance for CI budget.
  • Cross-target compilation was verified per the PR notes (cargo check for windows-msvc, darwin, freebsd, android, musl); I confirmed c_int, libc::MAP_ANONYMOUS, and RLIMIT_AS are in scope for the cfg-gated paths.
  • No prior claude[bot] review on this PR; all inline comment-cop threads are resolved.

On the cost of the ulimit -v walk: the walk starts at 256 MiB and stops at the first limit that ends with the error, and the lowest window sits right above the binary's own footprint, so on a build that has the fix it stops after a few spawns wherever the windows are (the first limit on the current release build). The 60 spawn case only happens on a build without the fix, where the test fails anyway, and took about 1 second on the canary.

The Apple Silicon skip on a crash that the address space does not explain is reported has a fix in flight: oven-sh/WebKit#485 changes the arm64 crash instruction to brk #0, and #39978 bumps the pin and adds a test with the same structureHeapSizeInKB=3072 trigger. Once both are in, the !(isMacOS && isArm64) condition can go. The two branches touch the same harness import line in run-crash-handler.test.ts, so whichever lands second needs a one line rebase.

#39985 is the Windows counterpart of this PR (a commit that fails under the commit limit or a job object limit). It adds the same Action::InitializeJsc lines, so whichever of the two lands second needs to drop its copy of them.

Rebased on main (61edd94, force pushed). One conflict, in run-crash-handler.test.ts: #39953 also moved noCoreCmd to module scope and removed the self-kill tests. I kept main's version of both and only moved the helper above the new describe block, which uses it. The source side applied as is. On the rebased tree the file passes on a release build (28 pass, 8 skip) and under bun bd (27 pass, 9 skip).

Noted the two follow-ups above: when #39978 lands, the !(isMacOS && isArm64) condition on the second test can go, and #39985 shares the Action::InitializeJsc lines with this PR.

I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs. Because it changes the crash handler's signal-path behavior (running an mmap probe inside the SIGABRT handler and suppressing the crash report in favor of a user-facing error), and the 128 MB threshold is derived from JSC internals, a human look would still be worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • Signal-handler safety of the mmap/munmap probe and Global::exit — both are async-signal-safe and match the existing fd-exhaustion pattern in the same stage-0 path.
  • The Action::InitializeJsc scoping in bun_jsc::initialize and its restoration on drop — the guard is held across JSCInitialize only.
  • Windows / non-unix: the check is a no-op and falls through to the normal report plus the new "Crashed while initializing JavaScriptCore" line.
  • The ulimit -v walk test terminates early on a fixed build and drains stdout is not needed (only stderr piped and read).
Extended reasoning...

Overview

The PR adds a new Action::InitializeJsc variant to the crash handler's CURRENT_ACTION thread-local, sets it around JSCInitialize in src/jsc/lib.rs, and hooks the crash handler's stage-0 path so that when a crash arrives with that action set, it first probes whether 128 MB of address space can still be reserved via mmap. If not, it prints a user-facing error naming ulimit -v and exits 1 without a crash report; otherwise the crash is reported as before with an added "Crashed while initializing JavaScriptCore" line. Two tests exercise both branches on release lanes (they skip under ASAN and the second skips on Apple Silicon). The existing noCoreCmd helper is hoisted above its new use site.

Security risks

None identified. The change only affects how a process that is already aborting inside JSC::initialize() reports its own death. The mmap is anonymous, private, and immediately unmapped; nothing is written through it. getrlimit(RLIMIT_AS) reads a process-local value. No user input reaches the new code.

Level of scrutiny

High. This is the crash handler — the last-resort diagnostic surface — and the new code runs inside a signal handler after abort() from C++. The change also introduces a design decision: suppressing the Sentry crash report entirely when the probe fails, on the reasoning that under 128 MB free JSC could not have started regardless, so the crash is the environment's doing, not Bun's. That reasoning is well-argued and the 128 MB derivation (64 MB smallest usable rung × size+alignment on Linux) is documented, but the constant tracks JSC internals (StructureAlignedMemoryAllocator.cpp) that could shift. The user-facing error wording and the choice to exit(1) rather than still emit a trace string are product decisions worth a human eye.

Other factors

  • The pattern (pretty_error! + Global::exit(1) inside crash-handler stage 0, before PANICKING is incremented) mirrors the existing fd-exhaustion handling directly below it, so precedent for running these helpers here is established.
  • mmap/munmap/getrlimit are async-signal-safe per POSIX; the crash the handler is reacting to is a synchronous abort() on the initializing thread, not an async fault, so re-entrancy concerns are limited.
  • On Windows and other non-unix targets the function body is empty, so behavior is unchanged there apart from the extra "Crashed while" line.
  • The tests are platform-gated and hermetic (no network), use ulimit -c 0 to avoid core-file leaks on the Alpine lanes, and the walk test's cost is bounded (the author notes it stops after the first spawn on a fixed build). The second test uses --debug-crash-handler-use-trace-string to avoid the slow symbolizer path.
  • There is cross-PR coordination noted in the timeline (oven-sh/WebKit#483, #39978 for the Apple Silicon skip removal, #39985 for the Windows counterpart) — whichever lands second needs a small rebase.
  • CI on the last full run passed the touched test file on every lane; the only red is an unrelated gitlab.com 403 outage affecting install tests.
  • The comment-cop bot flagged long comments earlier; those were shortened and the threads are resolved.

…tighten the JSC init crash tests

- can_reserve_address_space and address_space_limit call bun_sys::mmap,
  bun_sys::munmap and bun_sys::posix::getrlimit (new RlimitResource::AS)
  instead of libc directly.
- The pinned WebKit uses brk #0 as the arm64 crash instruction, so macOS
delivers a JSC RELEASE_ASSERT to the SIGTRAP handler. The test for a
crash during JSC initialization no longer skips on Apple Silicon.
- The ulimit -v walk starts just above the binary and stops at the first
limit bun starts under. It still finds the failing range when the limit
  at which bun starts moves.
- The new tests do not open a stdout pipe they never read. They assert on
the expected stderr and exit status, not on the absence of a crash banner.
…riter

The rest of crash_handler() writes to stderr directly because the Output
source of the crashing thread can be unconfigured. The address space error
used pretty_error!, which needs that source. It now uses the same raw
writer, with the same color check, after Output::flush().

The action is cleared first, so a crash while the error prints or while the
process exits is reported as a crash and does not take this path again.
… own report

JavaScriptCore now calls Bun__structureHeapReservationFailed with the
sizes it tried when the Structure heap reservation fails
(oven-sh/WebKit#760). The function prints the sizes and the finite
ulimit -v and ulimit -d values, then exits with status 1.

This replaces the address space probe in the crash handler. The crash
handler and bun_jsc::initialize are the same as on main again.
- The function decides that a range is too small from mimalloc's own
minimum, not from what the OS refused before.
- mimalloc refuses a range that is large enough: on Windows that is a
failed commit and an error. Anywhere else it is a bug, so the function
returns and JavaScriptCore crashes as before.
- The limit notes no longer name a command that fails under a hard
limit. The data limit is named on Linux only. With no limit set,
  Linux reads vm.overcommit_memory.
- The message is one write to stderr.
- bun:internal-for-testing can call the function, so every message has
a test that runs on every build.

### What does this PR do?

Hardening. This collects the open pull requests that fix a crash in Bun
into one change, and fixes about 20 more crashes that had no pull
request.

"Crash" here means a segfault, a Rust panic, an abort, a failed
assertion, memory corruption that a sanitizer reports, a native stack
overflow, or an exception that ends the process and that the program
can't catch. With this PR those cases throw a normal error, print a
normal CLI error and exit 1, or just work.

306 pull requests are included: 227 whole, and 79 cut down to the crash
fix where the rest was a refactor, a feature or a behavior change. Each
one was checked against current `main` first. 45 more turned out to be
fixed already, and 17 were duplicates. The full list is at the bottom.

#### Crashes you could hit in normal use

- **`bun build` with macros and a `.env` file crashed at random.** In a
repro with many macro modules, more than a third of the builds crashed.
Now 3,000 of 3,000 produce the right bundle. (#45960)
- **`bun run` and `bunx` aborted if a signal arrived while the child was
being spawned.** (#38926, #45965)
- **`bun build --compile ./index.js ./public/*` panicked** if an
embedded file's name wasn't valid UTF-8.
- **A truncated or corrupted compiled executable** died with SIGBUS or a
panic at startup. It now prints an error. (#31787, #38251, #41360)
- **Dev server:** several `Option::unwrap()` panics after a failed or
deleted import (#38046, #44744, #44746), a segfault when an `onLoad`
plugin throws while another bundle is queued, a request that hung and
then panicked with `bundle active`, and `server.stop()` that never
resolved after a client aborted a waiting request.
- **`Bun.serve`:** `server.fetch(url, { headers: new Headers() })`
followed by a GC segfaulted (#40888). Routes were used after free after
`server.reload()` with `tls.serverName` (#38636).
- **`text()` and `json()` on a stream of string chunks** could abort the
process, a regression in 1.4.0. (#44269)
- **`Bun.Transpiler` with `exports.eliminate` or `exports.replace`**
aborted on `export default 1` and on most re-export clauses. (#44137)
- **A decorated `declare` field in a class expression** with
`experimentalDecorators` panicked. (#38095)
- **YAML and JSON5 files with a key that isn't a string** panicked with
`--no-bundle` and in `Bun.Transpiler`. (#41827)
- **`Bun.FileSystemRouter`:** reading `.params` segfaulted when a
rejected route candidate left its parameters behind. (#39290, #39291)
- **Native addons that call `uv_async_*`, `uv_timer_*`, `uv_idle_*`,
`uv_prepare_*`, `uv_check_*`, `uv_queue_work` or `uv_cwd`** aborted with
"unsupported uv function" on Linux and macOS. They're implemented now.
(#36609, #39652, #39892)
- **`--watch` and `--hot`** panicked when the system was out of inotify
instances or file descriptors, or when the reload `exec` failed. They
print an error now. (#39629, #39975, #44837)
- **Paths longer than the path buffer** panicked in `bun install`, the
resolver, the bundler, `--compile`, `tsconfig.json` `paths` and
`baseUrl`, `package.json` `main` and `sideEffects`, `bun run --filter`,
`bun pm diff`, source maps and snapshots. They're ordinary errors now,
or they work. (#36340, #37529, #39104, #39650, #43067)
- **A Worker that creates a `ShadowRealm` and imports
`node:worker_threads` in it** segfaulted.
- **`structuredClone` or `postMessage` of an X25519 key** gave an object
that aborted the process when read. (#45624)
- **`node:stream` web adapters and `node:http2`** could end the process
with an exception that no handler could catch. (#45076, #45975)
- **Windows:** a watcher panic in a burst of file changes (#44344), a
segfault after the machine resumes from sleep (#33015), crashes in the
shell's pipe reader (#39638, #43606), and addons that import from
`node.exe` without the delay-load hook (#35618).

Most of the rest needs unusual input: strings near the 2 GiB limit,
buffers that another thread or a getter resizes or detaches in the
middle of a call, `worker.terminate()` at a bad moment, running out of
memory or file descriptors, very deep nesting, or hostile arguments to
`bun:ffi`, `node:vm` and `bun:sqlite`.

#### Behavior changes

Things that didn't crash before and behave differently now:

- `new` on native functions that aren't constructors throws a
`TypeError`, as in Node: `util.types.*`, `buffer.isAscii`, `isUtf8`,
`transcode`, `resolveObjectURL`, `bun:jsc` exports, `cc()` symbols. It
used to return the call's result. They also stop printing as `[class
hostname]`. (#34575)
- `` $`cmd` `` throws `ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE` if an environment
variable's name or value contains a NUL byte. It used to cut the value
at the NUL. (#44981)
- `cc()` functions throw a `TypeError` for arguments that used to reach
C as garbage, and `read.*(ptr, NaN)` throws. (#37989, #38057, #40773)
- As PID 1, `bun` exits with 128 + the signal number on Ctrl+C or
`docker stop`. (#38877)
- A `NODE_MODULE` addon that's already loaded by the main thread throws
`ERR_DLOPEN_FAILED` when a live Worker loads it too, as in Node.
(#39968)
- An exception from a `node:vm` context reaches `uncaughtException`
handlers. (#39992) `vm.constants.DONT_CONTEXTIFY` returns the real
global proxy. (#34623)
- `createPrivateKey` rejects an EC JWK whose private value doesn't match
its public point. (#33752)
- `@dec static {}` is a syntax error, as in TypeScript and esbuild.
(#44883)
- `clearTimeout` ignores 0 and negative ids, and timer ids no longer
wrap. (#44771)
- HEAD for a `Response` whose body is an S3-backed `Blob` reports the
length that GET sends. (#44734)
- `bun:sqlite` and `node:sqlite`: if `iterate()` left a write unfinished
on a connection that has a hook, a user function or an authorizer, the
write is finished on the connection's next call instead of during
garbage collection. If the database is gone too, it's rolled back.
- `bun test --bail` runs exit listeners and closes SQLite databases.
(#39010)
- Dev server: a request for a client script waits while a bundle is in
flight (#42733), query strings reach framework routes (#33232), and a
request gets a 500 instead of hanging when plugins fail (#36812).

#### File formats

- `.jsc` bytecode files get a 24-byte footer so they can be verified
before decoding. Files from an older Bun are ignored and the source is
parsed instead. (#39396)
- `node:vm` `cachedData` gets an 8-byte checksum. A blob from an older
Bun is rejected, which the API allows. (#32839)
- The built-in modules section of a compiled executable changes from
format 1 to 2 and carries an engine stamp. (#44907)

#### Performance

Measured in instructions per operation on release builds of this branch
and its base, with an A/A run for the noise floor (0.0 to 0.2 %).

No change: `Bun.serve`, `node:http`, WebSocket echo and publish, `bun
build` of 3,807 modules, `bun run` with 2,000 imports, `readdir` /
`Glob` / `fs.cp` over 23,689 entries, startup and RSS. The binary grows
by 176 KB (0.17 %).

| Faster | Instructions |
| --- | --- |
| WebSocket echo of a 1 MB non-ASCII text message | −72 % |
| `Bun.inspect` of a large non-ASCII string | −39 % |
| `Bun.markdown.html` on large non-ASCII input | −33 % |
| `` $`cmd` `` with 300 environment variables | −6 % |
| `fs.readSync` | −5 % |
| `TextEncoder.encodeInto`, short ASCII strings | −4 % |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, 16-byte inputs | −17 % |

| Slower | Instructions | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `cc()` calls | +5 to +51 per call | Argument count and type checks,
and a check for `close()` (#37989, #38057, #43802, #44921). `dlopen()`
calls don't change |
| `process.env.X = v` | 38 → 593 per write | Writes aren't cached. Reads
don't change (#38871) |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, inputs of 1 KB or more | +4 to +9 % | Password
and salt are copied (#40554) |
| `bun build` with an object `--define` used thousands of times | +4.5 %
| The object is copied per use (#45969) |

#### Not included

- Fixes that need a WebKit change: #39967, #42534, #42982, #43764,
#43786, #44226. #42185 too: a typed array that has no `ArrayBuffer` yet
can't be pinned, so `view.buffer.transfer()` during an async call can
still free its bytes. Creating the `ArrayBuffer` up front costs 7 to 12
% on every async `fs` call, so the fix belongs in JSC: an `ArrayBuffer`
created while the view is borrowed should start out pinned.
- #45442 (`calc()` sums as a flat list): it changes minified output for
real stylesheets to survive a `calc()` with 25,000 terms. It deserves
its own review.
- #40023 (Windows event loop redesign), #29928 (Windows exit path),
#40534, #43963, #39571, #42904, #42834, #36355, #43266: refactors or
features whose crash is already covered or isn't a crash.
- The pull requests marked *(crash fix only)* below should stay open for
their other half.

### How did you verify your code works?

- **Tests.** Every fix has a test that fails on `main` (a release or an
ASAN build) and passes on this branch, except where that isn't
practical: code that only runs on Windows or macOS, inputs that need
several GB of memory, and a few rare races. Those were checked by hand
or by reading.
- **Stored repro scripts.** 230 crash repros ran on release and ASAN
builds of this branch and of `main`, side by side. Release: 88 no longer
crash. ASAN: 106 no longer crash. None crashes that didn't before. What
still crashes needs WebKit, is SQLite's own bug, or isn't a crash. The
ASAN number is from a later commit than the release number.
- **Dev server.** Because one fix makes requests wait, 2,171 generated
programs ran random interleavings of edits, build errors, failing
plugins, reloads, stops and disconnects with about 120,000 requests. No
request hung, was answered twice or got a stale body. `main` hung in 82
of 1,161 programs. This also found the four dev server bugs listed
above.
- **Path helpers.** 336,000 boundary cases with buffers of exactly the
computed size, and 12,003 random calls through 30 JS APIs on an ASAN
build, compared with `main`. No sanitizer report, and the results match
wherever `main` doesn't panic.
- **What worked on 1.4.3 still works.** Reviewers compared behavior with
1.4.3 and took out what changed it: for example an output directory
layout change for 9 or more entry points, a `server.reload()` change,
and a changed error message for `import("file:///50%deposit.ts")`.
- **Not run locally:** the Windows, macOS and FreeBSD code paths. CI
compiles and tests them.
