Source/JavaScriptCore/bytecode/UnlinkedFunctionExecutable.cpp— In Bun with persistent bytecode payloads, a function a debugged realm runs can never be decoded from its payload again after the next code deletion; every realm then regenerates it from source. The mode mismatch at UnlinkedFunctionExecutable.cpp:284 makes line 303 overwrite the decoded block with a generated one, and the decoded block was the only carrier of the payload record offsets. Fix: when a decoded block is replaced for another mode, keep its payload index and record offset on the executable (or beside the slot) so returnCodeToCache() can still return the executable to the payload, as it does today when nothing replaced the block. Pre-existing for the call-plus-construct case; the debugger case is new.Why this was flagged
Condition: a function decoded from a persistent bytecode payload (m_isCached decode at UnlinkedFunctionExecutable.cpp:268) is run by a global object whose defaultCodeGenerationMode() includes Debugger. The decoded block's codeGenerationMode() is the payload's mode, so the check at UnlinkedFunctionExecutable.cpp:284 fails, generateUnlinkedFunctionCodeBlock runs, and line 303 overwrites the slot with the generated block. The record offsets live, once decoded, only on the decoded block's cachedPayloadIndex()/cachedRecordOffset(); the generated block has payload index 0. On the next deleteAllCode (VM.cpp:1139) Heap.cpp:1207 calls returnCodeToCache(), which returns false at UnlinkedFunctionExecutable.cpp:365-366 because payloadIndex is 0, then Heap.cpp:1215 clearCode() empties both slots. From then on unlinkedCodeBlockFor() finds no decoder and no block and parses the source for every realm. On the base branch the decoded block stays in the slot, so returnCodeToCache() succeeds and the function is decoded again afterwards.
Verification: In UnlinkedFunctionExecutable.cpp the decoded block carries the payload's mode, so the new check at line 284 fails for a Debugger-mode request and line 303 replaces the decoded block with one whose cachedPayloadIndex() is 0. From then on returnCodeToCache() fails at lines 364-366. On the base, unlinkedCodeBlockFor returned the decoded block for any mode, so the payload link was never lost.
…cached function The test was a todo. A function decoded from the bytecode cache of a `bun build --compile --bytecode` executable has no debugger opcodes, and JSC handed that code to the debugged global object, so a `debugger;` statement in it did nothing. With oven-sh/WebKit#830 the debugged global object gets code generated with the opcodes and the decoded code stays for everyone else.
JSC gave the bytecode an unlinked function holds to every global object that links it, whatever the caller asked for. A debugger is attached to one global object, so a `vm` context or a ShadowRealm could be handed bytecode with debug hooks that the host generated, and the host bytecode without them. A generator suspended in one kind crashed when it resumed in the other, and a breakpoint in the host was never reached. The held bytecode now goes only to callers that ask for the same thing of the debugger. The other kind of caller gets bytecode of its own, and the held bytecode is never replaced. The pin is a preview build. It must be replaced by the commit on the fork's main before this merges.
The revision compares only the debugger part of the code generation mode and never replaces the bytecode an unlinked function holds: a caller that asks for the other kind gets bytecode of its own. Bytecode decoded from a `bun build --bytecode` cache therefore stays where a suspended generator can find it again.

What changed:
oven-sh/bun#45770 will pin the preview build of #837, which contains all three. |

The two new commits address the earlier points about re-enabling a kept profiler and the ungated ASSERT in ScriptExecutable::newCodeBlockFor. Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the marking constraint in Heap.cpp that reads m_typeProfilerLog after seeing m_typeProfiler while the mutator builds them in VM::makeTypeProfiler — the log is now stored first, and the base had the reverse order with the same unsynchronized read, so this change narrows rather than introduces that window.
Extended reasoning...
The change reworks how shared unlinked function code is handed out per code generation mode, pins a started generator or async body to its first unlinked code via a new GC-visited m_codeOfStartedBody on FunctionExecutable, and keeps type and control flow profiler objects alive after disable until all code blocks are deleted. It touches no auth, injection or data exposure surface. One confirmed finding is posted inline, so approval is not appropriate; the ruled-out item above is pre-existing and is the only thing examined beyond it.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline nit, the new release path for m_codeOfStartedBody in Heap::deleteAllUnlinkedCodeBlocks (Source/JavaScriptCore/heap/Heap.cpp:1183-1235) was checked for the two states it does not name: a body in State::Executing (-2) returns early from the scan, but a running activation still holds its CodeBlock so eitherCodeBlock() keeps it out of startedBodiesToRelease; a generator still at Init has no frame and is released, which matches the comment. The codeGenerationModeForSharing ASSERT in ScriptExecutable::newCodeBlockFor is now gated on USE(BUN_JSC_ADDITIONS), so a non-Bun debug build no longer trips it.
Extended reasoning...
The push adds a release of the pinned started-body code when no activation is suspended past Init and no CodeBlock exists, and gates the mode ASSERT; both were examined against the generator state values in JSGenerator.h and the entryScope requirement of deleteAllCodeBlocks. The remaining inline finding is a test-convention nit; the change itself is core JSC code generation and heap iteration logic that a human should still read.

…the profilers and a client that disconnects The preview has oven-sh/WebKit#836, oven-sh/WebKit#830 and oven-sh/WebKit#837 on top of the WebKit commit that main pins. New tests: a vm.Script that runs twice in one global object, with a debugger, the type profiler and the control flow profiler turned on while its first generator is suspended. A generator and an async function that start under a profiler and resume after the profiler is turned off, and after the inspector client is gone.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: pre-existing: attaching the inspector while an async function or generator has one suspended activation leaves breakpoints in that function dead afterwards, even for new calls and after that activation finishes. ScriptExecutable.cpp:319 links every CodeBlock of a started body from codeOfStartedBody(), and only the code deletion at Heap.cpp:1184-1235 releases it; the attach-time deletion sees the suspended activation and keeps the hook-less code, and no later deletion comes. Fix: release the started-body code as soon as no activation is suspended, e.g. re-check in newCodeBlockFor when the realm's mode differs from the kept code's, while still keeping it while any activation is suspended. The base pins the mode for the executable's life, so this is narrower than the base.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.
Why this was flagged
A Bun server runs async function handler() once (ScriptExecutable.cpp:341-342 sets codeOfStartedBody to code without debug hooks), then an inspector client attaches and activates breakpoints while one call of handler is suspended at an await. Heap.cpp:1184-1190 lists handler's executable for release, but the scan at Heap.cpp:1199-1222 finds the suspended JSAsyncFunctionGenerator and Heap.cpp:1207-1208 removes it again, so the hook-less code stays. From then on every new CodeBlock of that executable links from codeOfStartedBody() at ScriptExecutable.cpp:319, so no breakpoint in handler ever pauses, including for calls made after the in-flight one finished. Nothing re-runs the release: Heap.cpp:1234-1235 is reached only from another deleteAllCode or shrinkFootprintNow, which an inspector session does not trigger. On the base branch ScriptExecutable pinned the mode for the executable's whole life, so the base fails the same way and this change only narrows the window.
Verification: ScriptExecutable.cpp:319 links every CodeBlock of a started body from the retained code. Heap.cpp:1199-1208 removes it from startedBodiesToRelease when a JSAsyncFunctionGenerator/JSGenerator has state != Init, so :1234-1235 never clears it. New calls still link from the hook-less code, so breakpoints in that function never pause. The base already fails by the same route, more broadly.
…s code only to callers that ask for its mode
Two defects with one cause: UnlinkedFunctionExecutable::unlinkedCodeBlockFor() returned the code block it holds
whatever code generation mode the caller asked for, and one unlinked executable is shared by every linked one
made from it.
1. A suspended generator or async function resumed in code it did not start in. Its registers are in a generator
frame that only the code that saved them reads back. The mode of such a body was pinned on the linked executable,
but the code was looked up again for every CodeBlock, and what came back was what another linked executable had
generated since: for another mode, or again from the source where the body started in code decoded from a
bytecode cache. A vm.Script run in two realms with a debugger on one, or one generator function evaluated twice
with a debugger or the type profiler turned on in between, crashed in llint_op_put_to_scope.
2. A global object with a debugger got code without op_debug when another global object had generated the function
first, so its breakpoints were never reached.
For 1, a body that has started now keeps the unlinked code it first ran in: FunctionExecutable::codeOfStartedBody()
is set when the first CodeBlock of a generator or async function body is made, and every later CodeBlock of that
linked executable is made from it (ScriptExecutable::newCodeBlockFor). This replaces the pinned mode. It does not
depend on the code being generated the same way twice, which the bytecode optimizer does not do, and the
control flow profiler's instruction changes which registers a body saves as well (between two stores to one register
it keeps the first, which BytecodeGenerator::emitMove drops otherwise). The SymbolTable constants of the body stay
the same objects, so CodeBlock::setConstantRegisters finds their clones through symbolTableCache again. The clone
map keyed by {unlinked function, constant index} is now for async modules only: with two codes of one body alive in
a realm its keys collided, and a closure read another loop iteration's binding.
The body keeps that code for the generator frames the code saved, and no longer. When unlinked code is deleted
(Heap::deleteAllUnlinkedCodeBlocks), an executable lets go of it if no activation of the body is suspended in a
frame and the body has no CodeBlock that one could be running in or start in. The code then goes like that of any
other function, and the next activation starts in code for the mode asked for then. The executables that hold
such code are in an IsoCellSet (Heap::functionExecutablesWithCodeOfStartedBody), so a deletion looks at those only.
For 2, the held code is given only to callers that ask for its mode: the debug hooks and the type profiler's
instructions (UnlinkedFunctionExecutable::codeGenerationModeForSharing()). A caller that asks for another mode gets
code of its own, which its CodeBlock keeps. The held code is never replaced. The control flow profiler's part of the
mode is not compared: an embedder can turn that profiler on and keep the code that exists (Bun's precise coverage),
and a function that has code then keeps running it. A private builtin's code that was generated for a debugger is
marked but has no debug hooks, and also serves a global object without a debugger. The other way round a global
object with a debugger gets its own, because the optimizing tiers read the mark.
sizeof(FunctionExecutable) goes from 120 to 128 bytes, which is what it is allocated in. Under the Microsoft ABI it
was 128 already: two bit-fields in ScriptExecutable are now one byte wide like their neighbours, which gives back
the 8 bytes there. A static_assert holds the size.
With one mode in the VM nothing is generated that was not before.
Tests in JSTests/stress:
- function-linked-twice-keeps-one-mode-for-each-suspended-body.js: one realm, a function evaluated twice, and a
debugger, the type profiler or the control flow profiler turned on and off in each order. Also what a body keeps
when code is deleted: its code while an activation is suspended (a generator, an async generator, an async
function, a builtin generator), and nothing once none is.
- closures-read-the-scopes-of-a-body-that-was-suspended-before-a-mode-change.js: the SymbolTable clones.
- function-code-is-generated-once-for-the-linked-executables-that-ask-for-the-same-mode.js: parse counts for the

code-decoded-from-a-bytecode-cache-stays-when-another-mode-is-asked-for.js: two realms and a debugger.
- generator-body-whose-code-could-not-be-generated-keeps-no-mode.js: a body whose generation failed is not tied to
anything.
$vm.wasCompiledWithDebuggerHooks(fn) and $vm.wasCompiledWithControlFlowProfilerHooks(fn) report the mode of a
function's code. evalTwiceFromPersistentBytecodeCache(source) in the shell does what an embedder does with an image
built ahead of time.

JSC pins the code generation mode of a generator body and looks its bytecode up again for every
CodeBlock. That is right only if the lookup gives back bytecode with the frame layout the body was suspended in. It does not:BytecodeGenerator::emitMovedrops otherwise. A generator withfinally { break; }saves one more register at itsyield. With the bytecode kept by identity none of these can happen, and three pieces go away: the pinned mode (two fields of
ScriptExecutable), the function branch of #657's clone map (async modules keep it), and the need for the lookup to protect suspended bodies. When a body lets go of its bytecode
The bytecode is kept for the frames it saved, and no longer.
