fix(launcher): build the emoji table on demand and let it go on trim - #76
After the launcher has been closed a while, Floe trims what the window made. The table of every named emoji and symbol was not part of that: it was built at every panel show and kept for the life of the process, about 2 MiB. It is now built by the first search that starts with :, which takes about 20 ms, and the trim lets it go with the icons and results.
Second commit, found while measuring: every app bundle that runs is registered with LaunchServices and the entry outlives the bundle. A Mac that builds and runs Floe from many folders collects thousands of dead entries, which slow every lookup of an app or a URL scheme and grow the copy of the database every process holds. The budget scripts now unregister the bundle they ran, and the docs say to build into .build/ and how to forget a bundle run from elsewhere.
Scope: This PR changes one focused thing (bug fix or feature) plus minimal plumbing. Larger refactors need prior agreement in an issue.
External contributors: before opening a PR for a bug fix or new feature, check the issue tracker and the TODO list. Opening an issue first avoids work on something that is already in progress or out of scope.

What is the new behavior?
EmojiCatalog.preload() is gone. EmojiCatalog.entries() builds the table on first use as before; EmojiCatalog.release() is new and LauncherWindow.trim() calls it next to the icon cache and the URL cache. The emoji search provider only runs for queries starting with :, so nothing else changes.
scripts/check-budget.sh and scripts/check-resident-budget.py unregister the app bundle they ran once the measurement is over, also when the run is interrupted, and print a warning naming the bundle when LaunchServices refuses or hangs. A bare binary such as .build/debug/Floe registers nothing, so the SwiftPM target is untouched, and the shell script leaves a bundle outside the repository alone, so a run against /Applications/Floe.app keeps the installed app's entry.
EmojiCatalog.buildCount says how many times the table has been built, so the test can tell that a release was followed by a build rather than a cached answer.
Development's "One process, and Settings" lists the emoji table among what the trim gives back, and Checks explains the LaunchServices registrations. AGENTS.md tells agents to build into .build/.

PR Checklist
The PR title follows Conventional Commits (e.g. fix(runtime): …); PR Metadata checks this.
I've built and run the app locally and verified that it works as expected.
I've run the relevant checks from docs/DEVELOPMENT.md (list them below), e.g. bun runtime/smoke.ts extensions/hello planets.
If I changed project.yml, I ran xcodegen generate and committed Floe.xcodeproj.
I've noted which macOS versions I tested on.
I've updated documentation as needed.
If this PR changes dependencies / lockfiles (Package.resolved, runtime/bun.lock, Actions pins, etc.), dependency-sca is green, or any .github/osv-scanner.toml suppression includes both reason and ignoreUntil (see Thaw/Floe Security Policy).
Checks run:
swiftlint lint --strict: 0 violations.
swift test: 2,703 tests in 286 suites passed; EmojiTests re-run on the final files, 10 passed.
swiftformat .: the local 0.64.5 reformats 92 files this PR does not touch, so those were reverted and only the changed files were kept.
./scripts/check-budget.sh .build/debug/Floe: 67 MB, within the 100 MB budget.
python3 -B -m unittest discover -s scripts/tests: 18 passed. The measurement test mocks the unregister call apart from the launch and checks its arguments, and a new test covers the warning on a refused or hung lsregister.
shellcheck scripts/check-budget.sh and python3 -m py_compile scripts/check-resident-budget.py: clean.
The unregister step was checked by hand: .build/resident-signed/Floe.app had one LaunchServices entry before and none after, and a bundle placed outside the repository was left alone.
Tested on macOS 27.2 (26B123), Apple silicon.
Known limitations / follow-ups
Two reviewer notes not taken. The first : search after a trim builds the table on the main actor: about 20 ms in a release build, under the 50 ms the app logs as a slow search, once per idle period and only for emoji queries. Moving it off the main actor would need a late provider like the dictionary's, more code than 2 MiB warrants. A path such as Contents/./MacOS is not special-cased; the scripts take the paths the docs give them.
A trim still leaves about 20 MiB above cold on a debug build. Measured with malloc stack logging, that is Swift metadata, Objective-C method caches, ICU sets, Metal and GPU state from the first draw, and allocator pages that stay partly used. None of it is Floe's to free; a second pressure relief a second after the trim was tried and changed nothing.
Entries already in a Mac's LaunchServices database for bundles that no longer exist cannot be removed one by one (lsregister -u needs the bundle, -gc leaves them, and -kill no longer exists on macOS 27). Only lsregister -delete followed by a reboot clears them.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Changed
The emoji and symbol table is now created when you first search for an emoji or symbol, rather than when the launcher opens. The first search may take slightly longer.
The launcher can release the table when trimming memory. If you search again afterward, the table is rebuilt and your search works as before.
Confidence Score: 5/5
The PR appears safe to merge; no new actionable issues remain.

PR summary: The PR makes the emoji and symbol catalog build lazily on the first `:` search and be dropped by the launcher's memory trim, and makes the memory-budget scripts unregister the app bundle they ran with LaunchServices.
Review summary
Reviewed the full diff: a lazy emoji-catalog cache with a new EmojiCatalog.release() called from the launcher trim path, removal of the preload call, and LaunchServices unregistering added to two developer budget scripts. The catalog state stays behind a Mutex with a double-checked store, so the release racing with an in-flight build can only waste a rebuild, never corrupt or tear shared state; the emoji provider remains gated on a : query prefix. The shell script quotes the binary path and the Python helper passes an allowlisted path to lsregister in list form with no shell, so neither adds an injection surface. Documentation and changelog edits carry no runtime risk.

forget_registration selects the first .app path component, which may be an enclosing directory rather than the benchmarked Floe bundle.
Cleanup targets Workbench.app instead of Floe.app, potentially unregistering the wrong bundle and leaving Floe's entry behind.
This can occur when: The repository is located inside a directory named Workbench.app and a bundle-backed resident benchmark runs.

We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The new cleanup unconditionally unregisters the supplied bundle, even if it was registered before the benchmark. The resident-budget script applies the same policy to its allowlisted bundles.
The existing app registration may disappear, disrupting LaunchServices lookup, URL handling or Open With behavior until it is registered again.
This can occur when: A developer runs the search budget against /Applications/Floe.app/Contents/MacOS/Floe, or benchmarks a build bundle already used outside the check.

…en a bundle stays registered
The budget script's own test replaces Popen with a Mock, which the new subprocess.run call then used as a context manager. The test now mocks the unregister call on its own and checks its arguments.
Both scripts forget the bundle at exit, also after an interruption, warn with the bundle path when lsregister refuses or hangs, and take the innermost .app on the path. The shell script leaves a bundle outside the repository alone, so a run against the installed app keeps its entry.

A Mac that builds and runs Floe from many folders collects thousands of dead entries, which slow every lookup of an app or a URL scheme and grow the copy of the database every process holds. The budget scripts now unregister the bundle they ran, and the docs say to build into
.build/and how to forget a bundle run from elsewhere.Scope: This PR changes one focused thing (bug fix or feature) plus minimal plumbing. Larger refactors need prior agreement in an issue.

What is the new behavior?
EmojiCatalog.preload()is gone.EmojiCatalog.entries()builds the table on first use as before;EmojiCatalog.release()is new andLauncherWindow.trim()calls it next to the icon cache and the URL cache. The emoji search provider only runs for queries starting with:, so nothing else changes.scripts/check-budget.shandscripts/check-resident-budget.pyunregister the app bundle they ran once the measurement is over, also when the run is interrupted, and print a warning naming the bundle when LaunchServices refuses or hangs. A bare binary such as.build/debug/Floeregisters nothing, so the SwiftPM target is untouched, and the shell script leaves a bundle outside the repository alone, so a run against/Applications/Floe.appkeeps the installed app's entry.EmojiCatalog.buildCountsays how many times the table has been built, so the test can tell that a release was followed by a build rather than a cached answer..build/.Resident benchmark (
FLOE_RESIDENT_BENCH=150 .build/debug/Floe, debug build, two runs each):./scripts/check-budget.sh .build/debug/Floe: 67.5 MB before, 67.8 MB after. That benchmark never types a colon, so the table is not built in either run.PR Checklist

Two reviewer notes not taken. The first
:search after a trim builds the table on the main actor: about 20 ms in a release build, under the 50 ms the app logs as a slow search, once per idle period and only for emoji queries. Moving it off the main actor would need a late provider like the dictionary's, more code than 2 MiB warrants. A path such asContents/./MacOSis not special-cased; the scripts take the paths the docs give them.A trim still leaves about 20 MiB above cold on a debug build. Measured with malloc stack logging, that is Swift metadata, Objective-C method caches, ICU sets, Metal and GPU state from the first draw, and allocator pages that stay partly used. None of it is Floe's to free; a second pressure relief a second after the trim was tried and changed nothing.
Entries already in a Mac's LaunchServices database for bundles that no longer exist cannot be removed one by one (
lsregister -uneeds the bundle,-gcleaves them, and-killno longer exists on macOS 27). Onlylsregister -deletefollowed by a reboot clears them.Other information

Summary by CodeRabbit

Confidence Score: 5/5
The PR appears safe to merge; no new actionable issues remain.Summary
The PR builds the emoji table only when needed and releases it when the launcher trims memory. It also removes benchmark bundles from LaunchServices after use.
