feat(launcher): script commands as actions on apps, files, folders and links - #75
Script commands can act on a result. A @floe.subjects line turns a script into a row of the Actions menu (⌘K) on apps, files, folders or links. In Settings › Commands › Actions it can then be what Return does, have its own keys, or be left out of the menu, like Floe's own rows. Raycast doesn't read @floe.* lines, so the file still loads there, but as a plain command with no FLOE_* variables set.
Scope: this is one feature: script commands as rows of the Actions menu, from #40.
It touches 31 files (1,112 lines: 507 of tests, 19 generated in the String Catalog and project.pbxproj). The core is the new Sources/Floe/Actions/ScriptActions.swift; the other files are where a script is read, where rows are built, the Settings tab and the docs. It can't be split well: parsing the line alone would land a line that does nothing, and the menu rows can't be tried without it.

A script without a @floe.subjects line is searched for and run as before.
Where it is offered. The line names the kinds a script acts on: app, file, folder and url (or link). Such a script isn't found by searching for its title. It is listed after a separator at the end of the Actions menu of each result of those kinds, in the main search and in Search Files. In Settings › Commands › Actions, it is listed with Floe's rows for each kind it acts on, and the Scripts tab says "Actions on Files and Folders" beside it.
What it is told. The result is handed over in environment variables, never written into the command, so a name with quotes or $ in it is just a name. These include FLOE_SUBJECT, FLOE_NAME, FLOE_URL, FLOE_QUERY, FLOE_PATH, FLOE_FILENAME, FLOE_PARENT, FLOE_CONTENT_TYPE, FLOE_SIZE, FLOE_BUNDLE_ID, FLOE_APP_RUNNING, FLOE_HOST and more; docs/INTERFACES.md lists them all. A value Floe doesn't know is left unset. FLOE_QUERY is the search on screen, Search Files' own there. The startup disk gets only FLOE_PATH=/.
When it is read. What the disk says about a result is read when the script starts, after any confirming, and off the main actor, so a slow volume can't hold up the launcher. It waits at most 10 seconds; then the script runs with the result's name and path only. A symbolic link is read through to what it points at, as its kind already is: FLOE_PATH and the facts name the target, and only FLOE_NAME is the link's. A FLOE_* variable the login shell exports is never passed on.
How it runs. As a searched script does: it asks first if it needs confirming, and its output follows @raycast.mode. Its runs aren't counted for ranking, since it is never searched for.
What is refused. A required @raycast.argument is a parse error, since nothing is typed in the Actions menu ("optional": true is fine). An unknown kind, or a @floe.subjects line that names none, is a parse error too. A @floe. line counts only as a comment, so a script that prints one is searched for as before. All of these show in Settings › Commands › Scripts.
Hotkeys and links. A script that acts on results needs a result, so it has no hotkey: a hotkey it had before it got the line is taken off it on each scan of the Scripts folder, so its keys are free for rows. Saved settings now merge commandHotkeys entry by entry, so that removal can't undo a hotkey Settings gave another command at the same moment. A link that names it shows a HUD saying it runs from a result's Actions menu.
Choices. They are kept under the script's file name, the same id its search result has. Keys left on a script that was renamed or removed go to no row, so they never keep the same keys from a script that is on offer.
PR Checklist
The PR title follows Conventional Commits (e.g. fix(runtime): …); PR Metadata checks this.
I've built and run the app locally and verified that it works as expected.
I've run the relevant checks from docs/DEVELOPMENT.md (list them below), e.g. bun runtime/smoke.ts extensions/hello planets.
If I changed project.yml, I ran xcodegen generate and committed Floe.xcodeproj.
I've noted which macOS versions I tested on.
I've updated documentation as needed.
If this PR changes dependencies / lockfiles (Package.resolved, runtime/bun.lock, Actions pins, etc.), dependency-sca is green, or any .github/osv-scanner.toml suppression includes both reason and ignoreUntil (see Thaw/Floe Security Policy).
project.yml is unchanged; Floe.xcodeproj gains the new source file.
Checks run:

swiftlint lint --strict
./scripts/sync-strings.sh
./scripts/devrun.sh, then tried by hand on macOS 27.0.1 with a script on apps, files, folders and links that shows what it was told (before the fixes in the last commit)
Known limitations / follow-ups
Script rows show a terminal symbol, not the script's @raycast.icon.
Renaming a script's file loses its choices, as they are kept under its file name.
Written with Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5). Before opening, Claude Code's code review was run on the branch twice, and its findings were fixed in three commits. Claude Code also fixed what CodeRabbit and Greptile found on this PR, in the last commit.
Scripts can declare which result types they act on and appear in the Actions menu for matching results.
When run on a result, scripts receive relevant details—such as its name, URL, path, and file or app information—through environment variables.
Script actions can be configured in Settings, and their labels identify the result types they support.
Bug Fixes
Scripts that act on results are no longer offered as regular search commands, and their hotkeys are released when scripts change.
Changes to individual command hotkeys are preserved when settings are merged.
Documentation
Added guidance on configuring result actions, supported result types, and the information scripts receive.
Confidence Score: 5/5
The PR appears safe to merge; both previous findings are fixed and no new actionable issue remains.
Summary

A script command with a `# @floe.subjects app, file, folder, url` line acts
on results: it is listed at the end of the Actions menu of each result of
those kinds, and Settings › Commands › Actions can make it what Return
does, give it keys or leave it out of the menu. It is not searched for.
Raycast reads no @floe line, so the same file still works there.
The result reaches the script as FLOE_* environment variables, never
spliced into its command: its name, path, file name, extension, parent
folder, type (UTI, Finder's kind, MIME), size, dates, and for an app its
bundle id, version and whether it runs. The disk is read when the script
runs, not when the menu is built. docs/INTERFACES.md lists them all.
- ScriptActions.swift: the result a script acts on, what it is told, and
the kinds a @floe.subjects line names.
- AlternativeActions.rows adds a kind's scripts after Floe's rows, so
Return, the menu and keys all find them; the Return title's cache
follows the scripts too.
- ScriptRows runs them, so confirmation and output work as for any
script. A required argument is refused when the file is read, since
nothing is typed in the Actions menu.
- parse(file:) reads both kinds of field in fields(of:), keeping it
within the lint limits.

…rch on screen
From a review of script commands as actions.
- A script with @floe.subjects is never run without its result. Its
hotkey is not registered, and a link or hotkey that names it does
nothing, so it is never started with FLOE_PATH unset.
- FLOE_QUERY is the search on screen: Search Files' own field there,
not the launcher's.
- Keys left on a renamed or removed script go to no row. They no longer
keep the same keys from a script that is on offer, in Settings or in
the launcher.
- The startup disk is told FLOE_PATH=/ only, not FLOE_PARENT=/..
- What the disk says about a result is read off the main actor, so a
slow volume can't hold up the launcher. The app's process is still
read on the main actor.
- The Return title's cache hashes only the titles and ids of the
scripts on the result's kind, not every script.
- Scripts join a result's rows in floeActions(for:), so the menu, keys
and Return all get them from one place.
- SubjectFacts' process is a small struct, so Equatable is synthesized.
- ScriptRunner always lays the environment over the login shell's.
- A changelog line, and INTERFACES.md says what hotkeys, FLOE_QUERY,
FLOE_PARENT and renaming do.

…the scripts
- AlternativeActions.rows(_:for:) now keys a view's own rows as well as
adding the user's scripts. The launcher and Search Files hand it their
rows unkeyed, so no view can have keys on its rows without the scripts.
- CatalogStore counts changes to the scripts. The Return title's cache
reads the counter through offerState, so returnTitle no longer goes
through the scripts on every draw of the bottom bar.

…s, and say why
From a second review of script commands as actions.
- The catalog lists searched scripts and action scripts apart. Search,
hotkeys and the Actions menus each read their own list.
- A hotkey left on a script that now acts on results is taken off it,
so its keys are free for rows again.
- A link that names an action script says it runs from a result's
Actions menu, instead of doing nothing.
- A @floe.subjects line that names no kind is a parse error, shown in
Settings, rather than quietly leaving the script in the search.
- A symbolic link's facts are read from what it points at, as its kind
is.
- One helper finds the scripts on a kind, and rows(_:for:) asks once. A
script's action id is its result's id, from one prefix.
- ScriptRows counts a use from the script itself, not a flag.

PR summary: Adds a `@floe.subjects` metadata line to script commands so a script can act as an Actions-menu row for apps, files, folders or links, with the selected result passed to the script as `FLOE_*` environment variables, plus Settings rows, key choices and docs for those actions.
Review summary
No security issues found in this PR.
The change adds @floe.subjects to script commands so they appear as Actions-menu rows for apps, files, folders and web links, and hands the selected subject to the script as FLOE_* environment variables.
The main risk areas were checked closely:
Script execution path: ActionShell.run funnels through Shell.run, which spawns the script file directly with an argv array and an execve-style environment — there is no shell string concatenation anywhere, so attacker-shaped values (a downloaded file's name, a link title, FLOE_QUERY) cannot break out. The environment dict can only add the fixed FLOE_* keys, so it cannot override PATH, DYLD_*, BASH_SOURCE-style hooks, and the diff only reaches ActionScripts through a new run(_:for:) closure.
Subject-less execution: run(_:...) routes through the same guard that refuses action scripts on the hotkey/deep-link path, and the hotkey registration loop now iterates searchedScripts only, so action scripts can't be started with no result.
Confirmation and identity: needsConfirmation is still enforced on the action path (in start), row identity is namespaced under script: so it can't collide with Floe's own rows, and KindActions.keeping(scripts:) plus ActionKeys.inForce's primary through offered rows close the stale-key/stale-default paths.
Untrusted script metadata: @floe.* values come from a user-writable file and only parse into a fixed SubjectKind enum; the parser rejects unknown kinds and required @raycast.arguments, so no attacker-chosen string propagates and no metadata-driven bypass of the argument refusal exists.
Symlink/TOCTOU behaviour: SubjectFacts.read reads the resolved target while FLOE_PATH keeps the unresolved path, which is a documented consistency choice inside the same-user trust boundary, not an authorization decision (scripts run unsandboxed as the user by design).
The plausible security concerns raised during review were all either author-controlled configuration effects or pre-existing behaviour, and none crosses a trust boundary. Nothing here warrants a change request. The only non-security notes are that @floe.* metadata is honoured from any line of the file (not just the leading comment block), so a body mention of @floe.subjects can reclassify a script and drop its hotkey, and that script choices follow the file name.
Ruled out (6)
Can the new FLOE_* environment handoff inject commands or override security-relevant environment variables? The child process is spawned by Shell.run with an argv array and an execve-style environment (no shell string, no temp script), and the action dict can only supply fixed FLOE_* keys, so no value or key can inject or override PATH/DYLD_*/HOME.
Can an action script still be launched with no result, or skip its confirmation prompt? The only producer of `.script(id)` registration is the loop over `searchedScripts`, `ScriptRows.run(_:argumentStrings:)` refuses any script with subjects with an explanatory HUD, and `needsConfirmation` is checked in `start` for both the searched and the on-a-result path.
Can `@floe.subjects` being honoured from any line of the file reclassify a script with a security consequence? The Scripts folder is user-owned and any actor able to write there already controls arbitrary executable content in that file, and the leniency is pre-existing for `@raycast.*`, so no trust boundary is crossed.
Does the script scan silently deleting a script hotkey constitute unauthorized modification? Only the local user (or code already running as that user) can place or edit files in the Scripts folder, the removed entry is that user's own preference, and no other row ever auto-adopts the freed combination — it is a UX/data-loss defect, not a security issue.
Can a script be told facts about a different object than the path it acts on (symlink/kind TOCTOU)? Path and facts are derived from the same URL, and the only race windows require write access to the location while the user's selection is unchanged, which yields no privilege the actor did not already have.
Can a different script that reuses a previous script's file name inherit its Return default, row keys or hotkey? Floe's controls bound it: `KindActions.keeping(scripts:)` strips shortcuts for ids not on offer, `primary` resolves defaults through the offered rows, `dropHotkeys` removes launch hotkeys from action scripts, and the displayed Return title is rebuilt from the current script, so reaching it needs ac…
Review 1 on this PR · c3d9cd6 · requested Nov 5 20:29 UTC when the PR was opened
Scripts can declare supported result kinds with @floe.subjects. Matching scripts appear in result Actions menus and receive subject details through environment variables. The change also updates script parsing, settings, key handling, catalog filtering, and script execution.
Script parsing accepts @floe.subjects metadata and rejects empty or unsupported values and required arguments for result actions. Subject facts map to environment variables. Tests cover parsing, subject facts, and environment handling.
Matching scripts are listed after Floe’s actions. Settings include scripts acting on each result kind, and key handling accounts for script action rows. Script labels and shortcut handling reflect available actions.
The catalog separates searchable scripts from result-action scripts. Result actions receive the active query and subject environment when run. Tests cover script execution, catalog filtering, timeout behavior, and hotkey settings merges.

Merge hotkey removals per entry when the settings are saved.
finish(generation:scripts:) calls settings.dropHotkeys(of: actionScripts) on each changed scan (Sources/Floe/Launcher/CatalogStore.swift:173). A script that has a hotkey and gains @floe.subjects loses that hotkey. The removal is saved after the 200 ms debounce. write(_:) then merges against the stored settings, and SettingsMerge merges commandHotkeys as one top-level value. When this process has changed commandHotkeys, its whole dictionary wins. A commandHotkeys entry that the other process saved in the meantime is then lost.
Reading the saved settings before the drop narrows this window but does not close it. The other process can still save between that read and the debounced write.
The correction must apply at write time. Remove only the dropped script's entry from the latest stored commandHotkeys. Or merge commandHotkeys per entry in SettingsMerge, so that entries this process did not change keep the other process's value.

Add an executor test for SubjectFacts.read.
SubjectFacts.read reads file and bundle metadata. It leaves the main actor only through its @concurrent attribute. The script action path calls it from main-actor code. Removing the attribute would run those reads on the main thread. The three tests in ScriptActionsTests assert only returned values, so they would still pass after such a change. The project's coding standards require a WhatLeavesTheMainActorTests case for each such function. None exists for read.
The current code leaves the main actor correctly. This gap means a future change could move the reads back to the main thread without a failing test.

- A script is told about its result once it is confirmed, so an app that
quit while the question was open is told as not running. A symbolic link

its app is looked up by both paths. The read waits at most 10 seconds;
then the script runs with what the row knows.
- A @floe. line counts only as a comment, so a script that prints one is
searched for as before.
- A FLOE_ variable from the login shell is never passed on.
- Hotkeys are taken off action scripts on every scan, not only when the
scripts changed, and saved settings merge hotkeys entry by entry, so the
launcher's removal can't undo one Settings just gave.
- An Actions menu reads its result's kind again.
- docs/INTERFACES.md no longer says the example works in Raycast.
- Tests: the report file is written in one go, Told is locked, the label's
locale is pinned, and the reads are checked to leave the main actor.

Reviewing files that changed from the base of the PR and between c3d9cd6 and a30177a.
Included review availability: This review used your included allowance. Your plan provides up to 2 included reviews per hour; 1 remain after this review.
The review findings are fixed in a30177a, and each inline thread has a reply. CodeRabbit's two follow-ups, which have no thread:
Merge hotkey removals per entry.SettingsMerge.merged now merges commandHotkeys entry by entry: an entry only the other process changed takes its value, and one changed here keeps ours. So the launcher taking a hotkey off an action script can't drop a hotkey Settings saved meanwhile. Other keys still merge at the top level. Test: SettingsMergeTests.hotkeysAreMergedOneByOne.
Executor test for SubjectFacts.read. Added WhatLeavesTheMainActorTests.whatAScriptIsToldOfAResultIsReadOffTheMainActor, which checks both SubjectFacts.read and the new ActionSubject.resolved().
Also fixed: the missing Closes: N/A line that failed PR Metadata.
Two places where I went a different way from the suggestion:
@floe. lines count when they're comments, not only in the leading block.
When the 10-second read limit passes, the script still runs, with the disk's facts left unset, instead of a timeout error.
The threads have the reasons.
swift test (2,735 tests) and swiftlint lint --strict pass. This reply and the fixes were written with Claude Code.

Summary
Script commands can act on a result. A
@floe.subjectsline turns a script into a row of the Actions menu (⌘K) on apps, files, folders or links. In Settings › Commands › Actions it can then be what Return does, have its own keys, or be left out of the menu, like Floe's own rows. Raycast doesn't read@floe.*lines, so the file still loads there, but as a plain command with noFLOE_*variables set.Scope: this is one feature: script commands as rows of the Actions menu, from #40.

PR Type
It touches 31 files (1,112 lines: 507 of tests, 19 generated in the String Catalog and
project.pbxproj). The core is the newSources/Floe/Actions/ScriptActions.swift; the other files are where a script is read, where rows are built, the Settings tab and the docs. It can't be split well: parsing the line alone would land a line that does nothing, and the menu rows can't be tried without it.Area
Does this PR introduce a breaking change?
A script without a
@floe.subjectsline is searched for and run as before. What is the new behavior?
app, file, folderandurl(orlink). Such a script isn't found by searching for its title. It is listed after a separator at the end of the Actions menu of each result of those kinds, in the main search and in Search Files. In Settings › Commands › Actions, it is listed with Floe's rows for each kind it acts on, and the Scripts tab says "Actions on Files and Folders" beside it.$in it is just a name. These includeFLOE_SUBJECT,FLOE_NAME,FLOE_URL,FLOE_QUERY,FLOE_PATH,FLOE_FILENAME,FLOE_PARENT,FLOE_CONTENT_TYPE,FLOE_SIZE,FLOE_BUNDLE_ID,FLOE_APP_RUNNING,FLOE_HOSTand more;docs/INTERFACES.mdlists them all. A value Floe doesn't know is left unset.FLOE_QUERYis the search on screen, Search Files' own there. The startup disk gets onlyFLOE_PATH=/.FLOE_PATHand the facts name the target, and onlyFLOE_NAMEis the link's. AFLOE_*variable the login shell exports is never passed on.@raycast.mode. Its runs aren't counted for ranking, since it is never searched for.@raycast.argumentis a parse error, since nothing is typed in the Actions menu ("optional": trueis fine). An unknown kind, or a@floe.subjectsline that names none, is a parse error too. A@floe.line counts only as a comment, so a script that prints one is searched for as before. All of these show in Settings › Commands › Scripts.commandHotkeysentry by entry, so that removal can't undo a hotkey Settings gave another command at the same moment. A link that names it shows a HUD saying it runs from a result's Actions menu.PR Checklist
