Why

Follow-up to #540, from CodeRabbit's finding on DeviceRequest.waitForApproval(). A second call while one was waiting started a second polling loop. That happens when a view's .task runs again, for example. The two loops doubled the asks against the server's limits. Nothing calls it yet (the screens are slice 15), so this lands before anyone can hit it.

Design

The leaderboard design's DeviceRequest already owns "it asks at the server's pace". The section now says how: one wait at a time, shared by a second caller, and once approved it answers the member without asking again. I didn't take CodeRabbit's suggestion of throwing on a second call: notJoined reads "You haven't joined", and a re-run .task would race the old loop's unwinding.

waitForApproval() ──▶ approved already? answer the member, ask nothing
──▶ a wait running? await the same one ─────┐
──▶ waiting? start the one wait ─────┴─▶ same member (or codeExpired)

What changed

  • DeviceRequest keeps the running wait. A second caller awaits it, and both get the same member or the same codeExpired.
  • Once approved, waitForApproval() answers the member without asking the server again.

How it was verified

  • Two new tests in DeviceRequestTests. Both failed before the fix: the second wait asked again (4 asks instead of 3), and a call after approval threw notJoined.
    • should ask at the server's pace once, however many wait at the same time: two concurrent waits make 3 asks, 2 waits, and get the same member. Run 20 times, passed every time.
    • should answer the member again once approved, without asking the server again.
  • swift test --filter LeaderboardTests: 195 passed. xcodebuild test -scheme ClaudeBar: TEST SUCCEEDED. check-docs --strict passes.

Checklist

  • The problem is stated above, not only the solution
  • Design docs updated (the leaderboard design's DeviceRequest section)
  • Tests added; xcodebuild test passes
  • User-visible change: none yet (no screen calls it until slice 15), so no CHANGELOG line

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Concurrent approval requests now share a single polling sequence, and repeated requests return the approved member without polling again.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how approval waiting behaves, including concurrent requests and requests made after approval.

DeviceRequest owns "it asks at the server's pace". A second
waitForApproval() while one ran (a view's task run again) started a
second loop and doubled the asks (CodeRabbit on #540). Now the request
keeps one wait, shared by whoever waits, and once approved answers the
member without asking again, so a caller just after approval doesn't get
notJoined.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

DeviceRequest now shares an in-flight approval wait across concurrent callers. After approval, later calls return the approved member without polling again. Tests and design documentation cover this behavior.

DeviceRequest stores and reuses the in-flight approval wait, then returns the approved member without polling again. Tests cover concurrent and repeated calls. The design documentation describes this contract.

A narrow terminal-state race remains, and the new concurrency test does not reliably exercise overlapping waits. These bounded issues merit follow-up; otherwise, the change is mergeable with owner awareness.

Make the concurrent test hold the first wait open.

The injected sleep only records the interval. DeviceServer.approval(of:) also returns immediately. The first call can therefore complete before the second call starts. The approved-member cache can satisfy the second call, so the test can pass without exercising in-flight task sharing.

Suspend the first poll, start the second caller, release the poll, and then assert that both callers receive the shared result.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Check terminal state before returning the shared task.

If decline() or handOver() runs after approval but before the first waiter clears asking, a new waitForApproval() call returns the member from asking. The call should throw notJoined after the request becomes declined or joined. Check those states before awaiting asking.

As per coding guidelines, a request leaves approved once through handOver(); later calls must not treat it as approved.
