Hi, I'm Clarence Tan

I'm a Software Technology & Cybersecurity student at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.

I'm interested in software engineering, full-stack development, cloud computing, DevOps, and platform engineering. I enjoy building practical projects, understanding how systems work, and improving the way I design, test, and maintain software.

Most of my current development experience is with Java, JavaScript, React, SQL, and object-oriented programming. I'm also building my knowledge of C#/.NET, cloud platforms, and modern development practices.

Technical Skills

Languages

  • Java
  • JavaScript
  • Python
  • SQL
  • HTML
  • CSS

Web Development

  • React
  • Next.js
  • Tailwind CSS

Software Engineering

  • Object-oriented programming
  • Data structures
  • Relational databases
  • Software testing and debugging
  • JUnit
  • File I/O
  • Git and GitHub

Cloud and Infrastructure

Through university coursework and AWS Academy labs, I have gained hands-on experience with:

  • AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM)
  • Amazon EC2
  • Amazon S3
  • Amazon VPC
  • Public and private subnet design
  • Route tables and internet connectivity
  • Security Groups and Network ACLs
  • Internet Gateways and NAT Gateways
  • AWS CloudFormation
  • Cloud security and the AWS shared responsibility model

I also use Linux regularly and am interested in developing a deeper understanding of cloud infrastructure, automation, observability, and platform engineering.

Projects

ClimbCoach

ClimbCoach is a Java application that generates personalised bouldering training sessions based on a climber's goals, weaknesses, available training time, fatigue, and injury considerations.

I built the project with an emphasis on separating responsibilities between different parts of the application and keeping the training logic maintainable.

Some of the areas I worked with include:

  • Object-oriented application design
  • Rule-based training plan generation
  • Recursive data structures
  • Profile and session persistence
  • Input validation and error handling
  • Automated testing with JUnit
  • File-based data management

The project currently includes 15 passing automated tests.

Technologies: Java, JUnit, OOP, File I/O, Data Structures

Elden Word

Elden Word is a console-based turn-based RPG written in Java.

The project explores object-oriented design through a combat system involving multiple character classes, enemies, abilities, inventory management, and boss progression.

Some of the features include:

  • Multiple playable character classes
  • Turn-based combat
  • Character-specific abilities
  • Randomised attacks and critical hits
  • Multi-hit combat mechanics
  • Recursive action structures
  • Inventory and loot management
  • Boss progression
  • Run-summary persistence
  • JUnit testing

Working on Elden Word gave me experience dealing with interactions between multiple classes and systems rather than developing features in isolation.

Technologies: Java, JUnit 5, OOP, Recursion, Data Structures, File I/O

Export Ultimate Guitar Favourites

A JavaScript utility I created to export saved Ultimate Guitar tabs and chords into structured JSON for use with Freetar.

I built it to solve a practical problem I had with preserving and organising an existing music library. It was also a useful opportunity to work with browser scripting, page data, and JSON processing.

Technologies: JavaScript, JSON, Tampermonkey, Browser Scripting

What I'm Learning

I'm currently developing my knowledge in areas including:

  • C# and .NET
  • Angular
  • Microsoft Azure
  • AWS
  • Docker
  • CI/CD
  • Cloud infrastructure
  • DevOps
  • Platform engineering
  • Observability

I'm particularly interested in understanding the full lifecycle of software, from writing and testing an application through to deploying, operating, and monitoring it.

What I'm Looking For

I'm currently looking for opportunities to gain professional software engineering experience and contribute to real-world projects.

I'm especially interested in roles where I can work with experienced developers, improve my engineering practices, and continue building skills across software development, cloud technologies, DevOps, and platform engineering.
