M12: an XFA form laid out again by its scripts rebuilds its pages in the view (#4603) - #4604
The need. On a dynamic XFA form, a field change whose scripts lay the form out again (a check box's change script that shows a hidden section) writes new pages into the document, but the session kept the old page list. The new section's fields had no page rectangle, the field list kept its old length, and saving failed with "the edit changed the page count from 1 to 2", so the form could not be saved once the section was shown. A picture chosen for an XFA image field, and a reset whose calculations show or hide a section, took the same path.
The basis. XFA 3.3, chapter 30, config dynamicRender (p. 1300): the form may "re-render itself during the session to show or hide objects, instantiate pages, and so on". Chapter 7, "Basic Layout in Dynamic Forms" (pp. 269-270): content that no longer fits "moves on to the next available page within the page set". The page tree written must keep /Count equal to its page objects (ISO 32000-2, Table 30, p. 103), and the session's page list must match the file it saves, which the save check of #1698 enforces.
The change (pdfcraft-engine only, plus one test fixture in pdfcraft-xfa)
XfaRun gains relaid. Runner::relayout sets it just before it calls pdfcraft_xfa::rerender, so a layout that fails part way, after it may have replaced fields, still counts.
EditCtx gathers it from every script run inside an edit: on_changes (field changes and resets), on_data_replaced (pictures) and on_event.
After the scripts, apply raises the edit's scope to Scope::Full when the form was laid out again, as the text-growth path of fix(xfa): reflow growable multiline fields after filling #2624 already does. The decision is "laid out again", not "the page count changed": the page objects, widgets and sizes are all replaced even when the count stays the same.
The scope is stored in the undo step, so undo and redo rebuild the pages too.
check_pages is unchanged. It caught a real mismatch, and it now passes because the session's page list is the file's.
How you verified it
cargo fmt --check
clippy with -D warnings on the crates I changed (pdfcraft-engine, pdfcraft-xfa, pdfcraft-automation, all targets)
tests pass on the crates I changed: pdfcraft-engine (392 passed), pdfcraft-xfa (128) and pdfcraft-automation (316), 0 failed. The issue's two pdfcraft-cli run scripts now finish: steps.json reaches 2 pages and steps2.json 3, and every save succeeds.
cargo check --workspace --all-targets
cargo xtask layers, cargo xtask assets and cargo xtask parity
Tests (synthetic fixture presence_growth_template: a check box over an 8in block and a hidden section of two 3in fields). Each was seen failing with the fix reverted.
an_xfa_script_that_shows_a_section_adds_its_page_and_undo_takes_it_away: 1 → 2 pages, d1 and d2 on page 2 with rectangles, the field list is the form's, saves and reopens with 2 pages; a value typed into the new section stays Scope::Form; undo → 1 page, redo → 2; unticking shrinks back to 1 page and saves.
an_xfa_script_relayout_that_keeps_the_page_count_moves_fields_in_the_view: the shown section pushes the field late onto page 2 while the form stays at 2 pages; the view places it there, at its new widget's rectangle.
an_xfa_reset_whose_calculations_hide_a_section_takes_its_page_away: a reset whose calculate script hides the section goes back to 1 page and saves.
an_xfa_event_that_lays_out_twice_then_fails_still_rebuilds_the_view: a change script and an exit script each lay the form out, then the exit script throws.
an_xfa_picture_lays_the_form_out_again_and_rebuilds_the_view: SetFieldImage on an XFA image field.
xfa_text_growth_then_a_script_relayout_both_add_pages: text growth 1 → 2, saved, then the script 2 → 3, saved.
an_xfa_script_that_adds_a_page_is_seen_and_saved_through_tools (automation): form_fill → doc_list says 2 pages, form_fields gives d2 page 2 with a rectangle, doc_save succeeds and the saved file reopens with 2 pages.
Mutants. Each was applied by hand, the new tests were run, and the file was restored.

A capped relayout is always owed and done in finish(), which sets the flag, so the result is the same.
4b

survives, not reachable
It differs only if rerender or xfa_redraw fails after it began replacing fields. That needs a catalog that is not a dictionary, or a page write that fails, and no document that opened reaches it. The flag is set first on purpose: a Full refresh after a failed attempt only costs time.

No GPL/AGPL code
Behaviour comes from XFA 3.3 (chapter 7, pp. 269-270; chapter 8, p. 295; config dynamicRender, p. 1300) and ISO 32000-2 (Tables 29 and 30, pp. 102-103)
No new asset, so no ATTRIBUTION.toml entry
Security
Nothing new runs: the scripts and layouts are the ones that already ran. Only the refresh after them changes.
No path, file or network handling changed
Signed forms: this PR does not change when a form is laid out, only how the session refreshes afterwards. ISO 32000-2 Table 257 (p. 574) DocMDP P=2 allows "filling in forms, instantiating page templates, and signing", which does not cover replacing pages. A test that a signed XFA form's change script cannot replace its pages needs a real signed XFA fixture, which the repository doesn't have (signed_shell carries a stand-in /Sig dictionary). It is left for the signed-form work in XFA: a form saved with its pages is laid out when it requires dynamic rendering, unless signed #4538.
Parity and reach
The "View and fill dynamic XFA forms" entry gains the new evidence and a sentence: a field change, reset or picture whose scripts or data lay the form out again rebuilds the pages and fields, whether or not the page count changed.
Headless through form_fill, form_set_image, form_reset, doc_list, form_fields and doc_save
Dynamic XFA forms now refresh pages, fields, and widget positions when scripted changes alter section visibility or content, including when the page count stays the same.
Form updates remain consistent through undo and redo, and after saving and reopening. Checkbox scripts that add a page retain that page and its fields after saving and reopening. Reset actions and image-field updates also correctly reflect resulting layout changes.

Walkthrough
XFA runs now report when relayout occurs. Edit processing promotes the refresh scope to Full after relayout, including when a later script errors. Regression tests cover layout changes, undo and redo, and save/reopen behavior.
XFA runs record relayouts. Edit processing accumulates this state and promotes the scope to Full when relayout occurs, including after a later script error.
Exercise relayout behavior and persistence crates/xfa/src/fixtures.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, crates/automation/tests/it/automation.rs, parity/acrobat-features.toml
Fixtures and tests cover visibility changes, field movement, reset, image updates, text growth, undo and redo, and save/reopen behavior. The automation test checks that a newly added field appears on page 2 and remains after reopening. Parity notes record dynamic XFA behavior and limitations.
No actionable merge-blocking risk is identified from the supplied current-head evidence.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to dabf0
The change makes the displayed and saved document follow layout changes that form scripts could already perform. Existing editing permissions and rollback behavior remain in place. No introduced security bypass was established, but recovery from interrupted layout and signed-form certification behavior remain incompletely verified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The directly changed exposure is the edited document's page, widget, field, and saved-output state. Document-authored scripts could already invoke relayout; the flag makes those existing effects visible through the session rather than granting a new execution primitive or host privilege.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The existing permission gate still runs before editing. Field changes, resets, images, script changes, and XFA events require fill-form permission. Disabling JavaScript withholds the cached XFA template from the edit context, and explicit XFA events reject a missing template. Refresh promotion occurs downstream of these controls.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Recording relayout before rerendering improves reconciliation when a later script error is retained instead of rejecting the edit. It does not make rerendering transactional: some callers continue after errors, and Full refresh validates readability rather than every semantic layout invariant. Writer inspection narrowed the ordinary error case through checked or newly created dictionary targets, but did not prove recovery for every panic-interrupted write. This remains a coverage limitation, not an established PR-introduced failure-containment defect.

Explanation
The PR satisfies the coding requirements in #4603. XfaRun.relaid records that relayout started. EditCtx gathers this state from changes, resets, data replacement, and events. Session::apply promotes the edit to Scope::Full only when relayout occurred. Undo and redo retain the promoted scope. The existing check_pages check remains unchanged. Regression tests cover page and field updates, same-count relayout, widget rectangles, reset, images, script errors, undo/redo, save/reopen, and automation.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed engine code implements scripted XFA relayout refresh. The fixtures and tests verify the required behavior. The automation test verifies the public tool path. The parity entry documents the implemented behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated by the available PR evidence.

Approving. When an XFA form's scripts or new data lay it out again, the engine now records it (XfaRun.relaid, set before the layout so a layout that fails part way still counts) and the edit widens its scope to a full rebuild, so the view and undo/redo rebuild pages, widgets and fields rather than only refreshing values, whether or not the page count changed. All four XfaRun construction sites set the flag and fold it into the edit context, and the new presence_growth_template fixture covers a check box showing a section that needs another page, by change script and by calculate. I read the source diff (the fixture and parity notes included); the gate and SonarCloud pass at 014935c. I read the code and the CI results; I did not run the app.
…the view
A field change, reset or picture whose scripts or data lay a dynamic XFA
form out again replaced its pages, widgets and fields, but the edit kept
the Form refresh scope. The session kept the old page list: the new
section's fields had no page rectangle, the field count was stale, and
saving failed the reopen check ("the edit changed the page count from 1
to 2").
XfaRun now records that a layout ran (set just before rerender), the edit
gathers it from every script run, and apply raises the scope to Full when
it did, as the text-growth path of storytold#2624 already does. The scope is kept
in the undo step, so undo and redo rebuild the pages too. check_pages is
unchanged.

Assert d2 after reopening.
The test checks d2 before saving, but after doc_open it checks only the page count. A document with two pages but a missing or misplaced d2 field would pass this automation test. Assert the reopened field page and rectangle.

@coderabbitai On the nitpick "Assert d2 after reopening" (crates/automation/tests/it/automation.rs): done in b3c4aee. After doc_open on the saved file, an_xfa_script_that_adds_a_page_is_seen_and_saved_through_tools reads form_fields again and asserts that d2 is on page 2, with the same rect it had before saving. That is stricter than "is an array". Only the test changed. It passes, and clippy -D warnings --all-targets on pdfcraft-automation is clean.
CI on 3fdd3d6 passed (gate / gate (ubuntu-24.04)).
@mtlcl410 Confirmed in crates/automation/tests/it/automation.rs: after reopening, the test reads form_fields, finds d2, and checks that it remains on page 2 with the same rect as before saving. This addresses the nitpick.
Thanks for the update and the reported test, clippy, and CI results.

What this changes
Fixes #4603.
