LR-UI-TRACK-SHADE: grey slider tracks show which way they take the photo - #3164
Stacked on #3155. Please review that first. Until it merges, this diff includes its commits. This PR's own commits are the LR-UI-TRACK-SHADE ones. It does not depend on #3158.
Why
On a one-line slider row the track is the main thing your eye lands on. A plain grey line doesn't say which way a slider takes the photo:
Contrast and Clarity darken toward the right of their effect;
Exposure lightens to the right;
Vignette darkens at both ends.
Lightroom Classic shades its grey tracks to show this. After years in it, a photographer reads the direction from the track without reading the name. That matters when you are moving fast through a set.
What changed
Shade on each control.ControlSpec gains shade: Shade, one of:
Plain;
Ramp (dark → light);
ReverseRamp (light → dark);
CentreLight (lightest at the centre);
Tinted (dark grey → red).
The develop control table gives each control its kind, with an optional => Kind suffix in the controls! macro:
Exposure, Highlights, Shadows, Whites, Blacks, Noise Reduction and the Detail sliders: Ramp;
Contrast, Clarity and Sharpening Masking: ReverseRamp;
Vignette Amount and Roundness: CentreLight;
Sharpening Amount: Tinted.
Track drawing. A grey track draws its ramp from the theme's own track, chrome and text colours, so it stays subtle in every theme, light ones included. Colour tracks (Temp, Tint, Hue, Saturation…) keep their gradients. A centred track's middle tick is drawn lighter, so it still shows on a shaded track.
Vignette Amount's track. It changes from a black-to-white colour gradient to a centred track with the CentreLight ramp. The neutral middle is now marked like the other centred sliders.
Mask sliders. The mask panel's Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites, Blacks and Clarity use the same shade as their Edit-panel twins. A test keeps the two in step.
develop.controls. It reports shade for each control, and docs/control-protocol.md documents it, so agents and scripts see the same metadata.
hostile positions (NaN, ±inf, out of range) never panic;
the table gives the expected kinds;
every mask slider matches its Edit twin.
cargo xtask parity, and the full cargo xtask ci on Windows 11. fmt, clippy, heif, the workspace tests, the doctests, parity, layers, assets and wasm all pass, apart from the Windows-only failures listed below.
The photographer who asked for this tried it in a test build and in the three feedback rounds on the dense layout, before it landed in their everyday build.
Docs: docs/parity-checklist.md has a new LR-UI-TRACK-SHADE row, and docs/control-protocol.md is updated. No docs/gaps.md entry applies.
Known Windows-only failures, which fail on main too:
originals hard-link;
Sony SR2 / path-separator discovery (also mcp folder_discovery);
accessibility without craft-fonts;
mcp idle_close (10054);
under load, folder_drop / slideshow / smart_previews_folder / stand_in_crop and panels::local_photos_cannot_be_added_to_albums_until_they_join_my_photos (a ui.drag timeout), which pass when run alone (the last one 3 of 3).
…ame column
Each slider is now one 20 pt row, as in Lightroom Classic:
- the name sits right-aligned in a column fitted to the longest name of
its section (at most 40 % of the row), then a long track, then the value;
- double-click the name to reset, drag the name to scrub, click the value
to type, and the arrow keys and the wheel nudge a hovered or clicked row.
Each flyout (Color Grading, Color Mixer, Point Color, Curve, SDR
Rendition, Defringe) fits its own column, so opening it never moves or
shortens the tracks around it.
Other layout changes:
- major section headers sit on a band;
- sub-sections are quieter captions with a hairline;
- the corner radius tokens are 2 / 3 pt;
- the remaining rows of the panel are compact;
- the mask sliders sit in folding Tone / Color / Effects / Details
sections, with Refine Edges above the effect picker and Amount.
Measured at the 270 pt default width against main:
- one slider row: 45 → 20 pt;
- Light header to Optics header, with Light..Detail open: 2068 → 1048 pt;
- sliders in view at 1600×1000: 10 → 21.
The Exposure track is shorter (222 pt on its own line → 140.5 pt beside
the name).
Tests: widgets/tests_dense_row.rs, tests/slider_columns.rs,
tests/masking.rs (the_mask_sliders_sit_in_sections).

… full name
A slider shown as "Amount" under the Grain caption was also announced as
"Amount", with no caption to say what it changes. `widgets::slider_named`
shows the short name and gives assistive tools the control's full name
(Grain, Vignette, Sharpening, Red Primary Hue …). Test:
accessibility::short_named_sliders_are_announced_by_their_full_name.

As in Lightroom Classic, a grey track now carries a subtle ramp that says
which way the slider darkens or lightens the photo. `ControlSpec` gains
`shade` (Plain, Ramp, ReverseRamp, CentreLight, Tinted), set in the
develop control table through an optional `=> Kind` suffix:
- Exposure, Highlights, Shadows, Whites, Blacks, Noise Reduction and the
Detail sliders: Ramp;
- Contrast, Clarity and Sharpening Masking: ReverseRamp;
- Vignette Amount and Roundness: CentreLight;
- Sharpening Amount: Tinted (dark grey to red).
The ramp is drawn from the theme's own colours, so it stays subtle in
every theme. Colour tracks keep their gradients.
Vignette Amount becomes a centred track with the CentreLight ramp,
instead of a black-to-white gradient.
The mask panel's twins follow their Edit sliders. `develop.controls`
reports `shade`, and docs/control-protocol.md documents it.

Walkthrough
This change adds shade metadata and rendering for slider tracks, introduces denser slider and panel layouts, groups local mask controls into foldable sections, and applies shared theme styling.
Control specifications expose a Shade value. Selected controls receive ramp, reverse-ramp, centre-light, or tinted shades, and slider tracks render those shades. Slider rows adapt to available width and support separate displayed and spoken names.
Panels and controls use compact spacing and shared theme tokens. Tests cover slider layout and interaction, mask grouping, accessibility names, and updated panel geometry. Locale catalogs add translations for control labels.
The reviewed slider and compact-layout changes leave no established merge-blocking risk in supported UI paths.

Before / after behavior
observed — Modified behavior in crates/develop/src/controls.rs: Adds the serializable Shade enum with Plain as its default and variants for left-to-right darkening or lightening, centre-light shading, and tinted shading. Its documentation distinguishes grey-track shading from colour tracks.
observed — Modified behavior in crates/develop/src/controls.rs: Adds the shade: Shade field to ControlSpec.
observed — Modified behavior in crates/develop/src/controls.rs: Adds the shade! helper, which maps an explicit shade name to its Shade variant and defaults omitted names to Plain. Extends the controls! declaration syntax with an optional => shade and stores the resulting shade in each generated ControlSpec.
observed — Modified behavior in crates/develop/src/controls.rs: Assigns Ramp to Exposure, Highlights, Shadows, Whites, and Blacks, and ReverseRamp to Contrast. Their previous specs had no shade value; all other control properties are unchanged.

Use a contrasting colour for every centered-track tick.
Plain centered tracks are painted with dim(t.track). This branch assigns the same colour to the midpoint tick, so the tick is invisible for centered controls with Shade::Plain. Use t.text_label for the tick on all Track::Centered tracks. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Proposed fix

Update the midpoint tick color in the centered-track rendering path to always

existing tick geometry and rendering unchanged.
Minor · Keep the fallback track inside narrow rows. · widgets.rs:409
slider_named passes ui.available_width() directly to allocate_exact_size, so narrow finite widths can reach row_parts. When the columns do not fit, track_l + 1.0 can exceed value.left() or row.right(). At widths of 40 and 10 points, this creates overlap with the value region and a track outside the row. Constrain the columns before applying the minimum track width, and assert both boundaries in the narrow-width test.

Update the column sizing in slider_named before it calls row_parts so the
minimum track width cannot push the track beyond the value region or row bounds
at narrow finite widths. Extend the narrow-width test to assert both boundaries.

At 10 to 40 pt the minimum track width could push the track past the
value column or out of the row. Now, in a row too narrow for everything:
- the margins give way first;
- then the name and value columns shrink;
- then the gaps.
Every part stays inside the row, with a point of track to divide by.
Normal widths are unchanged.
row_parts_never_overlap_or_vanish_at_any_width now also checks that
the parts stay inside the row and clear of the value.

Centred-track tick colour (widgets.rs:328-329): not changed. On a plain centred track the tick is not invisible. It is 6 pt tall on a 2 pt track, so it reads as a notch in the track colour, exactly as main draws it today (dim(t.track)). Only on a shaded track does it switch to text_label, because there the ramp around it can match the track colour. Making every plain tick brighter would change the look of every centred slider beyond this PR's scope.
Narrow rows (widgets.rs:409): valid, thanks. row_parts lives in LR-UI-DENSE-ROWS: one-line slider rows with a fitted, right-aligned name column #3155, so I fixed it there in b502786 and merged it here in aeadfab. In a row too narrow for everything, the margins give way first, then the name and value columns shrink, then the gaps, so every part stays inside the row with a point of track to divide by. Normal widths are unchanged. row_parts_never_overlap_or_vanish_at_any_width now also asserts that every part stays inside the row and that the track ends before the value. It failed before the fix (at 0–40 pt the track ran into the value or out of the row).

…#3111)
The one-line slider row moves onto main's split slider: slider_named
builds the row from row_parts and the group's name column, the name
scrubs like the value (begin_scrub / scrub_value take whichever is
dragged), SliderLayout clamps track positions and divides by a track
width that is never zero, and the painting is paint_slider. Section
headers, flyout rows and buttons keep the dense sizes.
