Read Canon maker-note lens when LensModel is missing - #2771
Add a canon_maker_note_lens fallback in try_read_exif, parsed with lightcraft_tiff::makernote::parse_makernote (Canon notes are the Plain kind), mirroring panasonic_maker_note_lens; add a unit test in exif.rs that feeds an Exif block with a Canon maker note but no LensModel and asserts lens_model is populated.
Why
LightCraft already fills a missing lens_model from the Panasonic and Nikon maker notes in try_read_exif, but never from the Canon maker note, so Canon bodies such as the EOS 5D that omit EXIF LensModel cannot match any lens profile even when the maker note records the lens.
Tests
canon_maker_note_lens_fills_lens_model (crates/meta/src/exif.rs) fails before the change (test exif::tests::canon_maker_note_lens_fills_lens_model ... FAILED) and passes after.

Risks
Low — the change only adds a fallback after EXIF LensModel and follows the existing Panasonic/Nikon pattern; a Canon note that cannot be read simply leaves lens_model empty, which is today's behavior.
Canon photos can now display lens names when the standard lens field is unavailable and the metadata contains a readable Canon lens name. If no named lens information is available, no lens name is displayed from this source. Panasonic lens-name extraction remains supported and takes priority, preserving existing lens-name display for Panasonic photos.

Local Windows GNU validation used a rustc wrapper that disables automatic DLL symbol exports only for lightcraft-web. Explicit exports and wasm builds are unchanged. This avoids the local PE export-ordinal limit; it does not waive any repository gate.

Walkthrough
When EXIF LensModel is absent, metadata extraction checks Panasonic maker notes and then Canon maker notes. The Canon lookup requires a make beginning with CANON and reads lens-name tag 0x0095. Tests cover both TIFF byte orders and notes with or without a lens name.
The fallback path checks Canon maker notes after Panasonic extraction. The Canon parser reads lens-name tag 0x0095 for Canon makes. Tests cover named lens notes and notes with only numeric LensType data in both byte orders.
The identified Canon tag-lookup defect is corrected. The change is mergeable after normal checks.

Explanation
Issue #2192 concerns EOS 5D files where EXIF LensModel is empty and Canon records only numeric LensType data. The new code reads only Canon maker-note tag 0x0095. The added test supplies that tag and separately asserts that numeric LensType data produces no lens model. Therefore, the reviewed changes do not establish a lens model for the issue's reported metadata.
Resolution
Handle the Canon maker-note representation used by the EOS 5D case, including CameraSettings tag 0x0001 index 22, and resolve its numeric lens type to the lens name used for lens matching. Add a regression fixture with no EXIF LensModel and no maker-note 0x0095 name.

🎯 Functional Correctness | Major | ⚡ Quick win
Read a Canon lens field instead of treating 0x0001 as a lens name.
Canon maker-note tag 0x0001 contains CameraSettings, not an ASCII lens name. Canon defines 0x0095 as a string LensModel; CameraSettings index 22 contains a numeric LensType. With a normal Canon maker note and no EXIF LensModel, text(..., 0x0001) cannot provide the name needed for lens corrections. The new fixture writes an ASCII name to 0x0001, so it does not test that case. Read the available Canon lens field, and test the fallback with a representative EOS 5D maker note. Numeric LensType values may need identification beyond reading a string. (exiftool.org)

Blocking, crates/meta/src/exif.rs (canon_maker_note_lens, CANON_LENS_TYPE = 0x0001): Canon maker note tag 0x0001 is not a lens name. In the ExifTool Canon tag table it is CanonCameraSettings, an array of int16u values (LensType is an index inside it, as a number, not text). The Canon lens name tag is 0x0095 (LensModel, ASCII). So on real Canon files this either returns None (non-ASCII type) or reads settings data as a string, and the feature does nothing useful. The test passes only because canon_exif invents an ASCII 0x0001 entry. Fix: read tag 0x0095 as ASCII, and build the test fixture with 0x0095. Also update the doc comments that call 0x0001 the LensType name.

Reviewed 054b32f15721da9ee9c42d0b7d9e86b7f2cf218c, the full diff, TIFF maker-note parser, tests and prior reviews.
The earlier 0x0001 problem is fixed: the fallback now reads Canon ASCII 0x0095, and the synthetic fixture uses the correct field and TIFF-relative offsets in both byte orders. The current-head Ubuntu gate logs confirm that test and all eight CI stages pass. I found no additional introduced defect in that fallback.
However, this does not yet demonstrate a fix for #2192: the reported original EOS 5D file has an empty Canon LensModel and only numeric LensType, while ExifTool derives the lens from other metadata. This implementation still leaves that case empty, and the new negative test explicitly preserves that result. Please either cover the reported identification path with a representative regression test, or accurately describe this as a narrower improvement without claiming it closes #2192.
I did not test a real EOS 5D file or lens-profile selection; the hosted run had no raw corpus files. Leaving COMMENT for the remaining scope/validation gap, not repeating the fixed tag-number finding.

Reviewed at 054b32f. The corrected 0x0095 fallback looks useful for files that have a textual Canon maker-note LensModel, and it belongs in shared metadata extraction. I agree with FredApps’s point on the closing claim: the #2192 report has an empty LensModel and numeric LensType, and the new test explicitly expects the numeric-only fixture to remain unnamed (crates/meta/src/exif.rs:371–375). Please change “Fixes #2192” to “Refs #2192”, or add independently sourced, ambiguity-aware LensType resolution and a regression matching the reported input before closing the issue.
From the root-cause perspective, this is a narrow metadata fallback. The raw CR2 decoder still uses from_tiff, which bypasses this enrichment; engine import and raw loading extract the file again, so those photo paths can work. Existing catalog photos still need a re-read. #3073 will not automatically revisit a photo whose stored lens name is empty. Whether to centralize enriched lens identity across these entry points is the maintainers’ call; I would keep that follow-up explicit rather than describe this as general Canon lens-correction support.
The rebase onto 662df66 is sound: its tree is identical to my independent rebase, and its only adaptation moves the fallback into try_read_exif_with and preserves the parser options. I found no newly added production unwrap/expect/panic or unchecked input indexing in this change. The corrected test covers both byte orders and safely leaves numeric-only notes unresolved.
Validation limit: I did not run tests locally (the required shared build lock was occupied and I stopped the queued runner before Cargo started), so my findings are from code inspection; the hosted gate is green at this head.

Test: canon_maker_note_lens_fills_lens_model failed before the change and passes after.
- tag 0x0001 is CameraSettings (numeric LensType at index 22), not an ASCII name; real EOS 5D files never carry a lens name there
- read the lens name from 0x0095 (LensModel) and yield none when only the numeric LensType exists
- fixture now builds a representative maker note (CameraSettings table + LensType 178) and covers both byte orders plus the nameless case
