What does this PR do?

Populate HttpExtension.query from the request-target in the policy filter, so the policy engine can see the HTTP query string. .path() excludes the query, and today a policy can't gate on it.

Which issue(s) does this relate to?

Fixes praxis-proxy/policy#222 in praxis-proxy/policy#223, to be released.

Checklist

  • Signed off all commits (git commit -s)
  • Tests added or updated
  • Documentation updated (if applicable)
  • CHANGELOG.md updated (if the change is user-visible)
  • make lint && make test && make test-integration passes locally

Does this introduce a breaking change?

No.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • HTTP security policies can now evaluate request query strings separately from URL paths. The query value excludes the leading ?; requests without a query have no query value. External plugins need read_query access.
  • Documentation
    • Added a runnable example showing authorization based on a query-string value, including responses for allowed and denied requests. The example is listed with the other security configurations.

Walkthrough

Adds documentation and a runnable example for authorizing requests with http.query. Adds policy-filter tests and integration tests for allowed, denied, and unauthenticated requests.

Changes: HTTP Query Policy

Layer / File(s) Summary
Document and configure query authorization
crates/filter/src/builtins/http/security/policy/filter.rs, tests/integration/fixtures/query-policy.yaml, examples/configs/security/policy-query.yaml, examples/README.md, CHANGELOG.md
Documents http.query as a separate, optional attribute and describes its access requirements and diagnostic redaction. Adds a policy fixture that requires authentication and allows only action=read, plus a proxy example that uses the fixture's policy behavior.
Test query-based policy evaluation
crates/filter/src/builtins/http/security/policy/tests.rs
Adds a JWT-authenticated policy test. Requests with action=read continue; requests with a different or absent query reject.
Exercise the proxy example
tests/integration/tests/suite/examples/mod.rs, tests/integration/tests/suite/examples/policy_query.rs
Registers integration tests for the example. They check the successful response for action=read, the configured denial response for action=write, and the authentication response when authorization is absent.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "docs(policy): document and test the http.query attribute" matches the changeset. The changes document the http.query policy attribute in the PolicyFilter docs, add a changelog entry, add an example config and README row, and add unit and integration tests for http.query. The author states the PR makes no behavior change, so the title's focus on documenting and testing the existing attribute is accurate.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The only directly linked issue, #222, is closed and marked as historical context only. No active directly linked target remains. Therefore no linked-issue coding requirements apply to this pull request. The PR description states that the PR populates HttpExtension.query from the request-target. The change summary and PR objectives do not show that source change. The PR objectives state that the author removed that implementation after PPE 0.6.0 and Praxis #1516 provided http.query. That description claim is stale and is not a requirement. The reviewed changes are documentation, tests, an example configuration, an integration fixture, and a changelog entry for the existing http.query attribute.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes in the change summary stay within the http.query topic that #222 raised. They include: a PolicyFilter doc update describing http.query (crates/filter/src/builtins/http/security/policy/filter.rs, +12); a pure-L7 query-policy unit test (crates/filter/src/builtins/http/security/policy/tests.rs, +90); an example configuration and README entry (examples/configs/security/policy-query.yaml, examples/README.md); a CEL query-policy integration fixture and integration test (tests/integration/fixtures/query-policy.yaml, tests/integration/tests/suite/examples/policy_query.rs, tests/integration/tests/suite/examples/mod.rs); and a CHANGELOG.md entry. These changes support documentation and testing of the same attribute. No change in the summary shows unrelated work. The file docs/filters/http/security/policy.md is in ignored_files, so its content was not inspected. This assessment does not depend on that file. The source-level change named in the PR description is absent from the reviewed change summary. This assessment covers only the changes shown in the summary and the merge-base diff. No repository inspection was available to confirm the full diff.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 4 files. (4 skipped: 4 unsupported.)

Main now passes the request query to policy as `http.query` (praxis-proxy#1516).
Document it, show it in a runnable example, and cover it with tests:

- Document the HTTP request-line attributes a rule can read in the
PolicyFilter doc comment in filter.rs, which generates
docs/filters/http/security/policy.md. Doc comment only, no code
  change.
- Add the security/policy-query.yaml example and its integration
test: a CEL rule over `http.query` admits the matching query and
denies a different or absent one.
- Add a unit test that a global rule sees `http.query`.
- Add the [Unreleased] changelog entry.

Author

Update: with PPE 0.6.0 released (including praxis-proxy/policy#223), this PR is now ready. While it was waiting, #1516 upgraded Praxis to PPE 0.6.0 and also passed the request query to policy as http.query, covering the change this PR originally made. I've rebased onto main and dropped my version of that change in favor of the one in #1516.

This PR now adds documentation and tests for the attribute, with no change in behavior:

  • Documents the HTTP request-line attributes rules can read (http.method, http.path, http.host, http.scheme, http.query) in the PolicyFilter doc comment, which generates docs/filters/http/security/policy.md.
  • Adds the security/policy-query.yaml example and its integration test. A CEL rule over http.query admits the matching query, and denies a different or absent one.
  • Adds a unit test that a global rule sees http.query.
  • Adds an [Unreleased] changelog entry.

I've retitled the PR to match, squashed it into a single signed commit, and verified it locally with make lint, make test and make test-integration.

Test absent-query denial through the proxy.

Add a valid-JWT request to /resource without a query and assert that the proxy denies it. The unit test calls the filter directly, so it does not cover the proxy’s fact-capture path for this input.
