Summary

Add the optional idle-wait seam required for Praxis #1293. Existing callers retain the historical fixed grace-period behavior; callers can provide a process-owned wait that returns when accepted work is quiescent and idle.

Praxis integration depends on this fork change being reviewed and released.

Closes #1293

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an optional graceful-shutdown callback that receives the configured grace period and can signal when accepted work is idle, allowing shutdown to proceed early.
    • When no callback is configured, the server waits for the full grace period. The callback can be cleared to restore this default behavior.
    • The callback is responsible for ensuring accept activity and work tracking are synchronized before signaling that the server is idle.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The server now accepts an optional GracefulShutdownIdle callback. During graceful shutdown, the callback can end the grace-period wait early. Without a callback, the server waits for the full period.

Changes: Graceful Shutdown

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define and configure the callback
pingora-core/src/server/mod.rs
Adds the public callback type, an optional server field, setter and clearer methods, and initializes the callback as absent in both constructors.
Use callback during shutdown
pingora-core/src/server/mod.rs, pingora-core/tests/server_idle_gracefulshutdown.rs
Uses the callback result to end the wait early or log that the grace period expired. Unit and integration tests check the supplied period and shutdown phases.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(server): allow graceful shutdown to exit when idle" matches the main change. The PR adds an optional idle-wait callback (GracefulShutdownIdle) to Server, with setter and clear methods. During graceful shutdown, a true result lets the server exit before the grace period ends. The title is specific and short, and it names the server component and the behavior change. It does not cover the setter and clear API or the test, which is expected for a title.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 75.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 4 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Add an integration test that installs the idle callback and runs graceful shutdown.

The new unit test calls wait_for_graceful_shutdown_idle directly. No test calls set_graceful_shutdown_idle, and no test runs Server::run with a callback installed. If Server::run stopped passing self.graceful_shutdown_idle to the helper, every test would still pass. The existing graceful-shutdown integration test installs no callback, so its behavior would not change.

Add a separate integration test file under pingora-core/tests/. Reuse the harness in server_phase_gracefulshutdown.rs. Each test file runs as its own process, which keeps the real SIGTERM isolated. In the new test:

  • Install a callback with set_graceful_shutdown_idle that records its argument and returns true.
  • Configure a grace_period_seconds value longer than the expected early exit.
  • Send SIGTERM and wait for the server to exit.
  • Assert that the callback ran with the configured grace period.
  • Assert that the run finished before the full grace period elapsed.

Validation update:

  • Commit 89fbeef adds a clear_graceful_shutdown_idle API and replaces unbounded blocking_recv() calls in the new integration test with a 5-second timeout helper.
  • Local cargo test -p quixotic-plecostomus-core --test server_idle_gracefulshutdown passes.
  • The PR remains draft while the callback timing contract is reviewed.

Restrict the SIGTERM test to Unix or use the Windows shutdown signal.

On Windows, Server::main_loop waits for Ctrl+C, but this test raises SIGTERM. The server cannot reach the asserted shutdown phases through that signal. Gate this test with #[cfg(unix)], or provide a Windows-specific signal path. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Apply the phase timeout to ShutdownRuntimes.

If the idle callback stalls, blocking_recv() waits indefinitely because the phase sender remains alive. This bypasses the five-second deadline in next_phase and can hang the test run. Use next_phase(&mut phase) for this assertion too. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Add messages to the phase assertions.

The phase assertions at Lines 67-95 lack explanatory messages. Add a message naming the expected phase to each assertion so a phase mismatch identifies the failed transition. As per path instructions, “Assertions carry an explanatory message rather than a preceding comment.”

Synchronize shutdown delivery with signal-listener registration.

Server::run broadcasts Running before UnixShutdownSignalWatch::recv creates the SIGTERM listener. If the server thread is delayed during that window, the test's libc::raise(SIGTERM) can terminate the isolated test process.

Pass a test-controlled ShutdownSignalWatch through RunArgs, release it after receiving Running, and remove the fixed sleep and process signal. This test-only race is a minor stability issue, not a major production-impact issue.
