fix(server): remote delegated tasks surface their questions and approvals on the parent - #26344
A task delegated to a linked environment (delegate_task with target.environmentId) can stop on a question or an approval there. The parent never shows it. The sidebar, web, and mobile clients connected to the parent's server have nothing to answer, and delegate_task / task_status report hasPendingQuestion: false and pendingApproval: null, so a mode: "wait" call runs until it times out. The task only moves on if someone opens the other machine and answers there.
Expected: the parent shows the remote task's question or approval like a local one, says which environment asks, sends an answer given on the parent to the task, and ends a wait on it.
Warning
🟡 Merge risk: medium · two-way door (merge-risk rubric)
An answer given on the parent now acts in another environment. Relaying runs on the link's own session, so writesThreads holds it to the link's access and fence. A link paired below full access is never offered "accept always". If the relay breaks, the remote task stays blocked, as it does on main today, and the parent asks again with an "Answer not delivered" error item.
Reach is small. Remote delegation only runs with Linked environments (Settings → Labs, off by default) turned on at both ends. A peer without the new tool is treated as an older version: its tasks follow as before, and their requests stay on that machine.
Revert:git revert the merge commit. The new projection field is optional and is ignored after a revert.
Change
Mirror. The parent's follower (RemoteDelegation) watches the remote thread's live requests through a new link-only MCP tool, t3_link_requests (watch), and records them on the parent's projection as remoteTaskRequests with the internal command delegated_task.remote.requests. The watch wakes on a request and on its question or approval details, which providers record separately, and every layer compares request content, so details that land late still reach the parent. Re-mirroring unchanged requests records nothing.
Show. The shell's pendingRuntimeRequest falls back to the newest unanswered one, which drives the sidebar status and notifications. client-runtime adds the requests to derivePendingThreadRequests, so web and mobile render them with the existing question and approval UI, labeled "Delegated task on ". A message sent on the parent redirects only the parent's own agent and never declines a mirrored approval. A remote question offers no attachments, and a pasted file or image chip reads as its plain name there. While a remote request waits, the parent can't be settled or snoozed, as with its own requests.
Answer.runtime-request.respond on the parent for a mirrored request records the answer on the projection. The follower relays it with t3_link_requests (respond). On the remote, that call runs as the link session, so it gets the same access, mode, and fence checks as any other write over the link. If the remote refuses and the request still waits, delegated_task.remote.respond.fail clears the answer and adds an "Answer not delivered" error item, so the parent asks again.
Tools.delegate_task and task_status report hasPendingQuestion and pendingApproval for remote tasks. mode: "wait" wakes on them and keeps the completionWake: "always" upgrade that local tasks get.
t3_link_requests is hidden from agents and outside clients (EnabledWhen link sessions only), so agents' tool lists don't grow. AgentContextBudget.test.ts now measures what an agent session lists, instead of every registered tool.
A fork or a local child thread does not copy the mirrored requests; the parent owns its tasks.
Scope and approval
Fixes#26527. It is a reliability fix for an existing capability: remote delegate_task already promises the parent a task it can follow, and #15082 made local tasks surface their questions and approvals on the parent. A remote task blocked on a request it never surfaces breaks that promise. It spans server, contracts, and client-runtime because the request has to cross the link, land on the parent's projection, and render in the clients that already handle local requests.
Verification
Live run on 09ffd20 (later commits only change the question banner label's width classes, walked live on 38f9abb below): two isolated servers on one machine, a "laptop" dev server linked to a "box" server with approval-required access. A Claude Haiku parent on the laptop delegated to the box's Replay (dev) provider.
Question.delegate_task in wait mode returned on the box task's question (hasPendingQuestion: true, waitTimedOut: false). The laptop sidebar showed the parent as Input, and the parent's composer showed the box's question, labeled with its environment and without an attachment control. I answered it there. On the box, the request resolved with {"schema_vs_ui_flexibility":"UI flexibility"}, applied by a mcp:link-respond:client…:fwd… command (the link session).
Approval.delegate_task in wait mode returned with pendingApproval: {kind: "command", …}. The sidebar showed Approval, and the parent's timeline showed "Ran command · Delegated task on devbox-michaelr-3 · Waiting for approval" with Decline and Approve. The composer kept its normal placeholder.
A message beside an approval. A message sent on the parent ran the parent's own turn, and the approval stayed in place. Approve then resolved it on the box with decision: "accept"; the box recorded nothing between pending and resolved.
A long environment label. On 38f9abb, in a 340 px window with the question collapsed, the label truncates and keeps room for the question beside it, with the toggle in place. Since 4a8dc40, a banner narrower than 560 px shows only the environment name in that spot. At full width the label shows in full.
Cross-version at a3cf143, against a real older box: main at this PR's base (9ebca5f), built in its own worktree on fresh state, linked from a laptop on this branch. A delegated task that runs to its end completed and woke the parent (status: completed, waitTimedOut: false). A task that asked a question kept it on the old box, as on main, and the laptop mirrored nothing and logged no error. In the other direction, a laptop on main never calls t3_link_requests, and the new tool is hidden from everyone but link sessions.
Test seams
linkRequests.test.ts: the tool as a link session calls it. Watch returns the details, waits for a new request, and reports a question whose details land after its request. Agents and outside clients cannot find it. A read-only link cannot answer. Another link's thread is refused, and so is "accept always" below full access, which a fenced link is never offered. An answer dispatches with a stable command id.
RemoteDelegatedTask.test.ts: the orchestrator's mirror, answer, wrong answer, double answer, re-mirror that keeps an answer, an unchanged re-mirror beside another task that records nothing, drop, completion clearing, settle and snooze refused while a request waits, and the "Answer not delivered" path.
RemoteDelegation.test.ts: laptop and box end to end over a real forwarded link. An approval shows on the parent and is answered there, a refusal makes the parent ask again, and a wait ends on the approval while a later result still wakes the parent.
threadRequests.test.ts: clients list remote questions and approvals as live requests with their environment, and a message never redirects them.
composerContextRecords.test.ts: which pasted records an answer to a question takes.
composerInlineTokenPaste.test.ts: a pasted record the target declines reads as its label.
ThreadForkService.test.ts and SubagentProjection.test.ts: a fork and a local child leave the parent's remote requests behind.
Checks: the lane gate on a66e922, whose only later change is one class list (vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck, and 19,033 tests beside the changes) is green except GitVcsDriver.test.ts, which fails on this machine because its global git config rewrites https://github.com/ to SSH; it is unrelated to this change. Upstream CI holds this fork PR's runs at action_required until a maintainer approves them.
Gaps: I did not walk the mobile app. Mobile reads the same derivePendingThreadRequests that web does, which is unit-tested, and its changes (label, attachments, redirect) typecheck and mirror the web changes. Pasting a file chip into a remote question is covered by the table test, not a capture.

…vals on the parent
A task delegated to a linked environment kept its questions and approvals
there: the parent showed nothing, task_status reported none, and only a client
attached to that environment could answer them. The follower now mirrors what
the task's thread there waits on onto the parent's record through a new
link-only t3_link_requests tool, the parent's shell and composer show it,
task_status and delegate_task waits report it, and an answer given on the
parent is relayed through the link, which holds it to the link's access.

- A watch also wakes on a request's question or approval details, and the
link, follower and parent compare request content, so details that land
after the request reach the parent.
- A local child no longer inherits its parent's mirrored requests.
- A message sent on the parent no longer declines a remote task's approval,
on web or mobile, and a remote question offers no attachments.
- A link paired below full access is not offered "accept always".
- The relay retries a failing or older peer per pass with a back-off that
resets, instead of stopping for the rest of the task.

A question mirrored from a task in another environment cannot take
attachments, so the mobile card no longer offers the picker or paste for it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- The parent records nothing when a follower mirrors a task's requests
unchanged, whatever order its other tasks' requests are in.
- Each failed relay pass is logged before it is retried.
- A file or image chip pasted into a question that takes no attachments
is left out on web, and mobile says why it dropped a pasted image.

…w one rule
- An approval mirrored from a delegated task says which environment it runs
in, on web and mobile, since it sits in the parent's shared footer.
- Which pasted records an answer to a question takes is one tested rule:
no machines, and files only when the question takes them.

The question card on web and mobile says which environment's delegated task
asks it, as the approval row already does.

🤖 How does an answer reach the remote? A link-only MCP tool over the existing peer forwarding, so the link's access and fence apply. A new RPC was the alternative.
🤖 May a relayed answer "accept always"? Only over a full-access link. The watch drops the option for a fenced link, so the parent never offers it.
🤖 What happens with an older peer? The task follows as before and its requests stay there. The relay asks again on each back-off step, so an upgraded peer is picked up.
🤖 What does a message sent on the parent do to a mirrored approval? Nothing. It redirects only the parent's own agent, on web and mobile.
🤖 Does the parent mirror message-capability questions? No. A local task's hasPendingQuestion counts only live requests, and those questions arrive after the task already has its result.
🤖 Does a failed relay answer retry or ask again? It asks again with "Answer not delivered". Transport errors and refusals share one error code, and asking again is visible where retrying could leave the task blocked while the parent shows it as answered.
🤖 Does the CLI's thread show count remote requests? No. It counts the thread's own. The shell, clients, and task tools carry them.
Remote delegated-task questions and approvals are mirrored to parent threads and can be answered there. The changes add linked-session request tools, relay responses, update pending-request state and client displays, and filter pasted context according to question attachment support.

Thread data now represents remote-task requests. Pending-request derivation includes unanswered remote requests with task metadata. Child threads and forks omit the parent’s remote-task requests.
The thread toolkit adds linked-session request watching and response actions. Caller and access checks apply, and peer forwarding carries tool calls to the linked environment.

The delegation follower watches remote requests, mirrors them to the parent, and relays parent responses. Remote task reads report pending questions and approvals and wait for parent-thread updates.
Web and mobile clients display remote-environment labels. Composer approvals exclude remote approvals, and question attachments and pasted context follow attachment support rules. Pasted references handle records that were declined during import.

Explanation
Issue [#26527] has coding requirements. No other active linked target applies. The whole-PR summary (merge base 9ebca5f to head 0cac39f) shows each requirement implemented:
Surface remote questions and approvals on the parent [#26527, #15082 reference]: RemoteDelegation.ts mirrors remote requests through the new link-only t3_link_requests watch. It records them as remoteTaskRequests on the parent projection. ProjectionStore.ts uses the newest unanswered one as the blocking pendingRuntimeRequest, which drives the sidebar status.
Name the environment [#26527]: threadRequests.ts attaches remoteTaskId and remoteEnvironmentLabel. Web (ComposerPendingUserInputPanel.tsx, TimelinePendingApprovalRow.tsx) and mobile (PendingApprovalCard.tsx, PendingUserInputCard.tsx) render the "Delegated task on <environment>" label.
Answer on the parent and relay to the task [#26527]: Orchestrator.ts handles runtime-request.respond for mirrored requests. RemoteDelegation.ts relays the answer with t3_link_requests (respond). linkRequests.ts applies link access and fence checks and rejects acceptAlways for linked callers. Refused or failed relays emit delegated_task.remote.respond.fail, which clears the answer and adds an "Answer not delivered" item.
Report hasPendingQuestion and pendingApproval, and let mode: "wait" end on them [#26527]: OrchestratorMcpService.tsreadRemoteTask reports pending user input and approvals from the unanswered remote requests. Remote waits listen for subagent.updated and thread.metadata-updated. RemoteDelegation.test.ts covers the wait ending on an approval while a later result still wakes the parent.
Older peers and isolation: the tool is hidden from agents and outside clients (EnabledWhen link sessions). ThreadForkService.ts and subagentProjection.ts drop remoteTaskRequests. Tests exist for both.
Settle and snooze guards (current head): Orchestrator.ts treats unanswered remote requests as blockers for settle, usage-limit recovery, and snooze.
Tests are reported for linkRequests.test.ts, RemoteDelegatedTask.test.ts, RemoteDelegation.test.ts, and threadRequests.test.ts. Live runs are reported with screenshots. The mobile app was not walked live. Its rendering uses the unit-tested derivePendingThreadRequests, and the mobile card changes are present in the summary. This gap does not block a verdict.
This verdict rests on the whole-PR summary and the PR author's reported runs. I did not inspect source hunks. No unmet coding requirement appears in the evidence.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Every changed area maps to the remote-request objective of [#26527]:
Transport and projection: packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2.ts, linkRequests.ts, tools.ts, PeerForwarding.ts, McpInvocationContext.ts, linkOrigin.ts, handlers.ts, and ThreadManagementService.ts add the link-only tool, its visibility rule, and the internal commands.
Task tools: OrchestratorMcpService.ts and RemoteDelegation.ts make delegate_task, task_status, and wait report and wake on remote requests.
Settle and snooze guards: Orchestrator.ts blocks these while a remote request waits. This follows from the mirror and matches the stated objective.
Clients: threadRequests.ts, threadDetail.ts, usePendingThreadRequests.ts, ChatView.tsx, ChatComposer.tsx, useComposerSend.ts, and the mobile ThreadDetailScreen.tsx route mirrored requests to the existing question and approval UI. redirectableApprovals keeps parent messages from declining mirrored approvals.
Question attachments and paste: composerContextRecords.ts, useComposerContextImport.ts, composerInlineTokenPaste.ts, useComposerStash.ts, and QuestionAttachments.tsx apply the rule that a remote question offers no attachments and that a declined paste reads as its label. The shared ImportedContextIds type supports this. Changes to local question composers are a side effect of the shared rule. They are not an unrelated product change.
Tests and fixtures: AgentContextBudget.test.ts, PeerForwarding.test.ts, ThreadForkService.test.ts, SubagentProjection.test.ts, and the new test files verify the added behavior.
Docs: docs/internals/remote.md and docs/user/remote-access.md describe the new behavior.
No change in the summary lacks a connection to the objective. The evidence does not show an unrelated product change. The summary does not list the complete diff, so a small unrelated hunk inside a listed file cannot be ruled out from this summary alone.

Block settlement and snooze while a remote task request is unanswered.
thread.settle and thread.snooze inspect only projection.runtimeRequests. An unanswered remote approval or question remains in projection.thread.remoteTaskRequests, so either command can proceed while the remote task is waiting. The automatic-settle candidate guard does not protect direct settle or snooze commands.
Import unansweredRemoteTaskRequests and include it in both guards.

A thread with an unanswered remote task request can no longer be settled
or snoozed. A pasted file or image a question cannot take now reads as its
label instead of a dangling reference, on paste and stash restore alike. The
question banner keeps the environment name visible on narrow screens, and the
user guide notes that an older linked machine keeps its requests.

Block limit-recovery snoozing for remote requests.
If the parent hits a usage limit while a remote task has an unanswered request, thread.metadata.update checks only local requests and can set snoozedUntil. The automatic recovery sweep also selects this thread. This bypasses the new thread.snooze guard and can delay the remote task until the user finds the thread. Apply the remote-request check here too. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Add focused tests for the paste importer and stash restore behavior.

Orchestrator.ts:3168 (limit-recovery snooze ignores remote requests): fixed in 0cac39f. The guard now counts unansweredRemoteTaskRequests, like thread.snooze. The automatic sweep already skipped such a thread, because pendingRuntimeRequest on the shell includes remote requests, so only a client-issued recovery could get through.
composerInlineTokenPaste.test.ts (cover the importer and stash restore): not changing. The rewrite is the behavior, and the test covers it. Marking a declined record is one line in a React hook, and both callers pass the hook's result straight into the rewrite. Testing that wiring would need the full composer hook harness, and the repo's testing rules leave out tests for callback wiring.

Explain how you established the problem, how you checked the change, and what you observed. Give the
relevant reproduction steps, environment, focused test commands or manual checks, and their results.
State what you could not check. A checkbox or "tests pass" alone does not show that the change works.

## Provide evidence for the changed behavior
Match the evidence to the change. Use focused tests for behavior that can be tested and manual evidence
where appropriate. Do not substitute broad test runs for checking the affected behavior, or run
repo-wide checks just to satisfy this guide. A backend fix does not need unrelated UI evidence.

Problem
A task delegated to a linked environment (
delegate_taskwithtarget.environmentId) can stop on a question or an approval there. The parent never shows it. The sidebar, web, and mobile clients connected to the parent's server have nothing to answer, anddelegate_task/task_statusreporthasPendingQuestion: falseandpendingApproval: null, so amode: "wait"call runs until it times out. The task only moves on if someone opens the other machine and answers there.Expected: the parent shows the remote task's question or approval like a local one, says which environment asks, sends an answer given on the parent to the task, and ends a wait on it.

writesThreadsholds it to the link's access and fence. A link paired below full access is never offered "accept always". If the relay breaks, the remote task stays blocked, as it does onmaintoday, and the parent asks again with an "Answer not delivered" error item.git revertthe merge commit. RemoteDelegation) watches the remote thread's live requests through a new link-only MCP tool,t3_link_requests(watch), and records them on the parent's projection asremoteTaskRequestswith the internal commanddelegated_task.remote.requests. The watch wakes on a request and on its question or approval details, which providers record separately, and every layer compares request content, so details that land late still reach the parent. Re-mirroring unchanged requests records nothing.pendingRuntimeRequestfalls back to the newest unanswered one, which drives the sidebar status and notifications.client-runtimeadds the requests toderivePendingThreadRequests, so web and mobile render them with the existing question and approval UI, labeled "Delegated task on ". A message sent on the parent redirects only the parent's own agent and never declines a mirrored approval. A remote question offers no attachments, and a pasted file or image chip reads as its plain name there. While a remote request waits, the parent can't be settled or snoozed, as with its own requests.runtime-request.respondon the parent for a mirrored request records the answer on the projection. The follower relays it witht3_link_requests(respond). On the remote, that call runs as the link session, so it gets the same access, mode, and fence checks as any other write over the link. If the remote refuses and the request still waits,delegated_task.remote.respond.failclears the answer and adds an "Answer not delivered" error item, so the parent asks again.delegate_taskandtask_statusreporthasPendingQuestionandpendingApprovalfor remote tasks.mode: "wait"wakes on them and keeps thecompletionWake: "always"upgrade that local tasks get.t3_link_requestsis hidden from agents and outside clients (EnabledWhenlink sessions only), so agents' tool lists don't grow.AgentContextBudget.test.tsnow measures what an agent session lists, instead of every registered tool.Scope and approval
Fixes #26527. It is a reliability fix for an existing capability: remote
delegate_taskalready promises the parent a task it can follow, and #15082 made local tasks surface their questions and approvals on the parent. A remote task blocked on a request it never surfaces breaks that promise. It spans server, contracts, and client-runtime because the request has to cross the link, land on the parent's projection, and render in the clients that already handle local requests.Verification
Live run on 09ffd20 (later commits only change the question banner label's width classes, walked live on 38f9abb below): two isolated servers on one machine, a "laptop" dev server linked to a "box" server with
approval-requiredaccess. A Claude Haiku parent on the laptop delegated to the box'sReplay (dev)provider.Question.
delegate_taskinwaitmode returned on the box task's question (hasPendingQuestion: true, waitTimedOut: false). The laptop sidebar showed the parent as Input, and the parent's composer showed the box's question, labeled with its environment and without an attachment control. I answered it there. On the box, the request resolved with{"schema_vs_ui_flexibility":"UI flexibility"}, applied by amcp:link-respond:client…:fwd…command (the link session).Approval.
delegate_taskinwaitmode returned withpendingApproval: {kind: "command", …}. The sidebar showed Approval, and the parent's timeline showed "Ran command · Delegated task on devbox-michaelr-3 · Waiting for approval" with Decline and Approve. The composer kept its normal placeholder.A message beside an approval. A message sent on the parent ran the parent's own turn, and the approval stayed in place. Approve then resolved it on the box with
decision: "accept"; the box recorded nothing between pending and resolved.A long environment label. On 38f9abb, in a 340 px window with the question collapsed, the label truncates and keeps room for the question beside it, with the toggle in place. Since 4a8dc40, a banner narrower than 560 px shows only the environment name in that spot. At full width the label shows in full.
Cross-version at a3cf143, against a real older box:
mainat this PR's base (9ebca5f), built in its own worktree on fresh state, linked from a laptop on this branch. A delegated task that runs to its end completed and woke the parent (status: completed, waitTimedOut: false). A task that asked a question kept it on the old box, as onmain, and the laptop mirrored nothing and logged no error. In the other direction, a laptop onmainnever callst3_link_requests, and the new tool is hidden from everyone but link sessions.Test seams
linkRequests.test.ts: the tool as a link session calls it. Watch returns the details, waits for a new request, and reports a question whose details land after its request. Agents and outside clients cannot find it. A read-only link cannot answer. Another link's thread is refused, and so is "accept always" below full access, which a fenced link is never offered. An answer dispatches with a stable command id.RemoteDelegatedTask.test.ts: the orchestrator's mirror, answer, wrong answer, double answer, re-mirror that keeps an answer, an unchanged re-mirror beside another task that records nothing, drop, completion clearing, settle and snooze refused while a request waits, and the "Answer not delivered" path.RemoteDelegation.test.ts: laptop and box end to end over a real forwarded link. An approval shows on the parent and is answered there, a refusal makes the parent ask again, and awaitends on the approval while a later result still wakes the parent.threadRequests.test.ts: clients list remote questions and approvals as live requests with their environment, and a message never redirects them.composerContextRecords.test.ts: which pasted records an answer to a question takes.composerInlineTokenPaste.test.ts: a pasted record the target declines reads as its label.ThreadForkService.test.tsandSubagentProjection.test.ts: a fork and a local child leave the parent's remote requests behind.Checks: the lane gate on a66e922, whose only later change is one class list (
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck, and 19,033 tests beside the changes) is green exceptGitVcsDriver.test.ts, which fails on this machine because its global git config rewriteshttps://github.com/to SSH; it is unrelated to this change. Upstream CI holds this fork PR's runs ataction_requireduntil a maintainer approves them.Gaps: I did not walk the mobile app. Mobile reads the same
derivePendingThreadRequeststhat web does, which is unit-tested, and its changes (label, attachments, redirect) typecheck and mirror the web changes. Pasting a file chip into a remote question is covered by the table test, not a capture.Decisions
