Problem

Pasted text only becomes a pasted-text.txt attachment at 32 KB, so everyday logs, stack traces, and code blocks still fill the composer. Users who want earlier folding have no way to get it. Other agent apps fold much earlier: the Codex CLI at 1,000 characters and the Codex desktop app at 5,000.

Change

Adds a pastedTextAttachmentThreshold client setting with three presets: 1 KB (~1,000 chars), 5 KB (~5,000 chars), and 32 KB (~32,000 chars), the default and today's behavior.

  • Contract: PastedTextAttachmentThreshold literal schema in ClientSettingsSchema and ClientSettingsPatch. A stored value that isn't a current preset decodes to the default instead of failing the whole client-settings decode, so adjusting the presets later can't wipe settings. Patches stay strict.
  • Shared logic: pastedTextDisposition() takes the threshold as a required argument instead of the hardcoded constant, so every call site has to pass it. The existing length-or-UTF-8-bytes comparison is unchanged. Because it counts bytes, the presets are labelled as sizes with approximate character counts (pastedTextThresholdLabel). The settings copy and docs note that non-Latin text and emoji fold with fewer characters.
  • Web and desktop: a "Large paste threshold" select under Settings → Chat, with reset, search, and restore-defaults handling. The composer reads it.
  • Mobile: a device-local preference (mobile has no client-settings sync, same as followUpBehavior) and an "Attach pastes as files from" section on the Settings → Chat page, next to follow-ups. The thread composer's paste path and both native editor wrappers pass it. The hook selects only the threshold, so unrelated preference writes don't re-render the editors. The native editors already took textPasteThresholdBytes as a prop, so Swift and Kotlin are untouched.
  • Docs: the large-paste paragraph in docs/user/composer.md points to the setting.

Scope and approval

This is a focused configuration option for an existing capability, the paste folding from #11442. The option only controls the size at which a paste folds. The default, the attachment behavior, the byte-aware comparison, the input-limit folding, and the Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+V bypass are unchanged. Context and the Codex comparison are in Ideas discussion #21489. That discussion doesn't have maintainer approval yet; I'm opening this under the configuration-option route and am happy to adjust scope or presets there.

Verification

Rebased onto current main (5211acfe95) as a single commit. Main had moved the web paste handling into useComposerAttachmentIntake, moved composer settings into a Chat page on web and mobile, and removed mobile's menu paste-into-draft path, so the setting now lives in Chat on every surface and the separate mobile Large pastes screen is gone. Main deleted textPaste.test.ts and SettingsPanels.restore.browser.test.tsx in #22557; the threshold tests are restored in textPaste.test.ts, and the restore-browser case is gone along with that file. Re-ran the tests, typecheck, and lint below. The web and iOS manual checks and screenshots below were done on an earlier base (ddab437d00), before the setting moved to the Chat pages.

  • vp test run packages/client-runtime/src/textPaste.test.ts packages/contracts/src/settings.test.ts apps/mobile/src/features/settings apps/web/src/components/settings/settingsSearch: 123 passed. Covers each preset's boundary, the byte count at the 1 KB preset (360 CJK characters fold), the labels, the default, patch round-trip and strictness, and the decode fallback for an unknown stored preset (other settings survive).
  • tsc --noEmit passes for contracts, client-runtime, web, and mobile. No lint errors in touched files.
  • Web (dev server, isolated state): at 1 KB, a 1,500-character paste became pasted-text.txt (2 KB) and a 500-character paste stayed inline. Earlier I also checked that the choice persists across reload and that resetting to the default keeps the 1,500-character paste inline.
  • iOS (iPhone 18 Pro simulator, iOS 27.0, rebuilt dev client): the Large pastes screen shows the size labels and the 1 KB choice persists across an app rebuild. With the selector-based hook, a 1,500-character native paste became pasted-text.txt. Before the follow-up I also checked that a 500-character paste stays inline.
  • The mobile preference sanitizer, which drops unknown stored thresholds, has no dedicated test; the rest of that function is untested too.
  • Not checked: Android on a device. It uses the same JS paths and the existing textPasteThresholdBytes prop.

Walkthrough

The change adds configurable pasted-text attachment thresholds for web and mobile. It defines supported values and a default, adds settings controls and persistence, and passes the selected threshold to composer paste handling.

Changes: Large-paste threshold

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 1ae3f

No material merge blocker was found in the threshold changes.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 7c85f

The change is limited to when pasted text enters the existing attachment workflow. Supported presets, unchanged attachment limits, and the existing default constrain its impact. No new security issue was established, although downstream storage and interruption recovery were not fully verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly affected scope is the user's client preference and composer drafts. Selecting a lower preset increases attachment staging of pasted content, but the inspected change does not add a destination, service privilege, or cross-tenant authority. Downstream storage and provider exposure remain outside the completed trace.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Clipboard text remains content input rather than an authority-bearing parameter. Web attachment staging retains active-thread, checkpoint, question-policy, size, and slot checks; eventual sending uses the existing composer send context rather than a new paste-specific dispatch path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Mobile paste handlers retain target-scoped filename reservations and final append-capacity checks. New-task attachment creation removes the produced file when the draft identity changes or insertion is rejected; the thread handler also removes files rejected by append. These controls do not establish cleanup after process termination.

Explanation

The description includes all required sections and provides clear problem context, implementation details, scope rationale, focused verification results, limitations, and UI evidence. It also identifies that some manual checks used an earlier base and that Android and the mobile preference sanitizer lack dedicated verification.

Keep layout classes on the parent.

SelectTrigger is a shared components/ui control, and AGENTS.md requires width classes to belong on the parent. The lint allowlist and existing call sites do not define an exception. Because the default trigger adds w-full min-w-36, moving these classes alone would not preserve the content-sized control. Use a content-sized SelectTrigger variant without those width constraints, and apply w-auto min-w-0 max-w-full to its parent wrapper.

Pastes fold into a text-file attachment only at 32 KiB, so long logs and
code blocks still flood the composer. Add a client setting with three
presets (1 KB, 5 KB, and 32 KB, the default) on web, desktop, and mobile.
The shared paste disposition and the native editors now read the chosen
threshold instead of a constant. Presets are labelled by size because the
comparison counts UTF-8 bytes, and a stored value that is no longer a
preset decodes to the default instead of failing the settings decode.

The setting lives in the Chat settings on web, desktop, and mobile.
