Problem

  • bun pm diff names a new url() target (! new module imports: evil-pkg/x.png) but not a new CSS @import.
  • Only parse_bundler ran the hook that records @import (src/css/css_parser.rs:780). StyleSheet::parse records url() only.
  • ast_notes (src/runtime/cli/pm_diff_command.rs:2054) reads a CSS target as a JavaScript specifier, so a sheet's own files fill the note.

Fix

  • Parser::push_import_record adds every import record. The @import arm of TopLevelRuleParser::rule_without_block calls it (the fixing line). 4 unsafe blocks go.
  • is_own_import reads a CSS target as a URL: a file of the package is no import, //host and a path that leaves the package are. normalize_css drops url(#fragment) and data: url().
  • Verified: test/cli/install/bun-pm-diff.test.ts and a unit test in src/css/css_parser.rs fail on main. Also test/js/bun/css/ and the bundler CSS suites.
  • Self-reviewed: 25 concerns raised, 23 addressed. Not taken (they change JavaScript notes): own-name and #alias targets, a manifest-aware note.

Background

  • An import record names a file that a source file refers to. The CSS parser fills the caller's list.
  • A bare CSS target (parts/x.css) is relative to its sheet first, then a package.
  • Considered a rule walk in normalize_css (derives again what the parser dropped) and parse_bundler there (turns on unread @layer work).

Downsides

  • url() notes from 1.4.4 change: own files, data: URLs and fragments leave (79 of 1,034 real release diffs).
  • Each statement at-rule costs 1 more instruction, each @import rule 32 more. .text grows by 2,304 bytes.
  • composes ... from targets (listed by 1.4.4) and sheets that the parser rejects (181 of 10,725 changed sheets) stay unlisted.
Notes

Question for a maintainer. Do CSS targets belong in the new module imports note? Release 1.4.3 lists none. Release 1.4.4 lists url() and composes targets, as a side effect of #45307. If the answer is no, close this PR: the parser change then has nothing visible behind it.

Report. There is no GitHub issue. The gap was found by a read of the code. Repro on main b1305ddc7c:

mkdir a b c
printf '{"name":"p","version":"1.0.0"}\n' > a/package.json
printf '{"name":"p","version":"1.0.1"}\n' > b/package.json
printf '{"name":"p","version":"1.0.1"}\n' > c/package.json
printf '.a { color: red }\n' > a/x.css
printf '@import "evil-pkg/x.css";\n.a { color: red }\n' > b/x.css
printf '.a { color: red; background: url("evil-pkg/x.png") }\n' > c/x.css
NO_COLOR=1 bun pm diff ./a ./b   # no note
NO_COLOR=1 bun pm diff ./a ./c   # ! new module imports: evil-pkg/x.png

With this PR the first command ends with ! new module imports: evil-pkg/x.css.

What the note says (release builds of main and of this branch)

New in the release main this PR
@import "evil-pkg/x.css" nothing evil-pkg/x.css
@import url("https://evil.example/x.css") nothing the URL
@import url(//evil.example/x.css) nothing //evil.example/x.css
url("evil-pkg/x.png") evil-pkg/x.png evil-pkg/x.png
six @import "parts/N.css" (files of the package) and require("evil-pkg") evil-pkg evil-pkg
@import "theme.css" and the new file theme.css nothing nothing
@import "fs" nothing fs, and no now imports fs
six data: url() and a remote @import in a later sheet six data: URLs the remote URL
@import "#theme/x.css" and clip-path: url(#clip) #clip #theme/x.css
@import url("data:text/css;base64,...") nothing the data: URL
@import "../../outside/x.css" in styles/main.css nothing ../../outside/x.css
@import "./not-shipped.css" (stays inside the package) nothing nothing
@import "/\\cdn.example.com/y.css" (a browser reads /\ as //) nothing /\cdn.example.com/y.css
url(DATA:image/png;base64,...) the DATA: URL nothing
@import "?v=2" nothing nothing

The parser change alone gives a wrong result in row 5: the six partials fill the 6 entries and evil-pkg is not named. That is why both halves are in one PR. Under a :path filter the own files are still found: exec takes the paths of the new side before the filter removes files.

Real packages (bun pm diff <name>@<a> <b>, the new module imports note)

  • animate.css 3.7.2 to 4.0.0: main lists a data: URL, path and markdown-it. This PR lists path, markdown-it. The 99 @import targets of source/animate.css are files of the package.
  • bootswatch 3.4.1 to 4.0.0: main shows six data: URLs and … and 23 more. This PR lists 17 targets. The six that it shows are Google Fonts @import URLs.
  • daisyui 4.12.24 to 5.0.0: main lists 24 targets and shows six data: URLs. This PR prints no note.
  • remixicon 4.5.0 to 4.6.0: main lists the six font files of the package (remixicon.eot?t=1734404658139, ...). This PR prints no note.

Reach. I ran 1,034 diffs of consecutive releases of 152 packages that ship CSS (--json --stat, main against this PR). The notes differ in 79 diffs of 41 packages:

  • 58 lose a note that listed only data: URLs, fragments and own files.
  • 16 keep a note with fewer or other targets. Example: codemirror 6.0.2 to 6.65.7 now shows @rollup/plugin-buble and rollup-plugin-copy, which five data: URLs hid.
  • 5 gain a note: Google Fonts URLs in bootswatch 5.3.2, bulmaswatch 0.8.1 and fomantic-ui-css 2.8.8, and sibling packages in suitcss 0.5.0 and basscss 8.0.8.

What changes for each caller of the parser

  • bun pm diff (StyleSheet::parse with a list): the list has one record for each top-level @import, in source order with the url() records.
  • cssInternals test hooks (StyleSheet::parse with a list): the same records. The printer reads a record only for url(), image-set() and composes, so the output does not change.
  • bun build --no-bundle (StyleSheet::parse with no list): push_import_record returns None and the @import rule is kept, as before.
  • The bundler and the runtime CSS module loader (parse_bundler): the same records, in the same order, with the same range.
  • ImportRule.import_record_idx is set for each caller that passes a list, not only for the bundler.

Measurements (release builds of b1305ddc7c and of this branch, linux x64)

  • Statement at-rule: +1.0 instruction for each rule (20,000 rules of @u a; under bun build --no-bundle: 4,360.47 to 4,361.47 for each rule).
  • @import rule: 4,000.25 to 4,032.26 instructions for each rule under bun build --no-bundle (+32.0). Under bun build: 10,607 to 10,666, which is below the run-to-run spread (about 1,000,000 instructions for 10,000 rules). push_import_record is a call. On main the push was inline in the hook.
  • bun pm diff, sheet with no @import (20,000 rules on each side): +329 of 298,493,582 instructions (spread 2,754), +0 heap calls.
  • bun pm diff, new CSS targets: about 1,000 instructions for each new @import (10 to 20 targets) and about 800 for each new bare url() target. Most of it is the lookup of the own file. 1,000 new @import rules in one sheet: +23,470,235 instructions (+7.7%), +3,023 mi_malloc, +24 mi_realloc. Most of that is the search for duplicates, which a new url() target also pays on main.
  • bun pm diff, JavaScript: +5 instructions for each new bare import. A new relative import is no longer copied into the list: 1,000 of them cost 11,219,289 instructions less (-21%), with 1,001 mi_malloc less.
  • bun pm diff with a :path filter: one copy of each path of the new side.
  • Release binary: .text +2,304 bytes (110,627,497 to 110,629,801). The stripped binary has 140,478,752 bytes on both builds. print_diff +1,481, exec +670, collect_notes +291, normalize +140, TopLevelRuleParser::rule_without_block -237, Parser::add_import_record (423) is now inline in its 3 callers, Parser::push_import_record (340) is new.
  • unsafe blocks in css_parser.rs: 15 to 11. BundlerAtRuleParser: 96 to 88 bytes.
  • Bundler output: 0 of 400 builds differ in output bytes, messages, positions or exit code (200 generated import graphs, plain and --minify, 220 succeed). The order of messages from two different files differs in 2 builds. That order also differs between runs of one binary.
  • bun pm diff text outside the notes: 0 of 770 sheet pairs differ (185 style sheets of this repository as added and as changed files, 400 generated pairs, each in the terminal view, as a patch and as --json).
  • bun build --no-bundle: 0 of 402 sheets differ.

How: instruction counts are instructions:u from perf_event_open, medians of 7 interleaved runs. Heap calls are gdb breakpoint hit counts on the mimalloc entry points. Sizes are from llvm-nm -S and llvm-size -A. perf, valgrind, strace and bloaty are not installed on the machine.

Designs that were weighed

  • A walk in normalize_css that reads the url of each top-level CssRule::Import. It is the smallest change. It adds a pass over the rules for each call, lists the @import targets before an earlier url(), and leaves StyleSheet::parse with a list that has no @import.
  • parse_bundler in normalize_css. It also collects the @layer names that only the linker reads.
  • StyleSheet::parse turns the hook on when the caller passes a list. It keeps two pointers to one list, and a second entry point must fill both.
  • This PR: the Parser owns the list and is the only writer. AtRuleParser::rule_without_block takes the Parser, so the @import arm can reach the list.
  • For the note: the rule for a file of the package is in is_own_import, which has one arm for a script (the old prefix test) and one for a style sheet. ast_notes no longer tests the prefix.

Self-review items not taken

  • Own-name targets (p/lib/x.js in package p) and #alias targets of a JavaScript file stay listed, as on main. A rule for them changes the notes that JavaScript files get today.
  • A note that reads dependencies of the manifest, to name only undeclared packages. It also changes the notes of JavaScript files.

Release delta. composes ... from: 1.4.4 lists its target. main does not (the parser reads composes only in a CSS module since #47025), and this PR does not. bun pm diff parses each sheet as plain CSS.

Not in this PR

  • An @import inside @media is an unknown at-rule and is not listed. A url() inside @import ... supports(...) has no record.
  • Tailwind @plugin, @config, @reference and @source are not listed.
  • A sheet that the parser rejects has no import list, as on main. In the 1,034 diffs, bun pm diff marks 678 of 10,725 changed sheets not parsed, on main and on this branch.
    • In 181 of them the parser rejects the new side (29 diffs, 14 packages). Examples: input[type=file]::file-selector-button[disabled] in sakura.css 1.5.0 and color: var(--#41403e-light-10) in papercss 1.8.0. A browser drops such a rule or declaration and keeps the rest.
    • In 140 the parser rejects only the old side, so each target of the new side counts as new. Example: the note for papercss 1.8.1 to 1.8.2 names a Google Fonts @import that 1.8.1 also has. On main that note names a data: URL for the same reason. 5 are deleted sheets.
    • 352 sheets of bootswatch and @picocss/pico parse alone. Those runs are past the 64 MB cap of normalize_css.
    • Three of the 181 sheets have an @import that the old sheet does not have. The note misses one of those targets: a Google Fonts URL in example/dynamic-start/resources/step.css of intro.js 8.4.0.
    • A second, tolerant parse of both sides for the import list alone can close both cases. It makes a not parsed file a source of notes, and it counts against that cap (12 diffs are past it today). That is a decision for a maintainer.
  • A relative target of a script that leaves the package (require("../../x")) is not listed, as on main.
  • The search for duplicates among new specifiers is quadratic.

`StyleSheet::parse` took an import record list and filled it for `url()`
only. The push for `@import` was in an at-rule hook that only
`parse_bundler` turned on, through a second raw pointer to the same list.

`Parser::push_import_record` is now the only code that adds a record. The
`@import` arm of the top-level rule parser calls it, so the record exists
when the caller passed a list. The hook keeps only the `@layer` split.
The at-rule parser no longer has a pointer to the list, and the `Parser`
holds the list as a borrow.
With `@import` records in the list, the note names a new `@import`
target. It read each CSS target as a JavaScript specifier: a style sheet's
own files and `data:` URLs filled its six entries, `//host` was dropped as
a local path, and `@import "fs"` was a Node.js builtin.

`is_own_import` now decides what is a file of the package. For a style
sheet, a bare path is looked up in the new side relative to the sheet,
with its query and fragment removed. The lookup uses the files of the
package from before the `:path` filters. `normalize_css` drops a
`url(#fragment)` and a `data:` `url()`. A style sheet has no builtins.

Status: the fix is in this PR (#48030).

Reproduced on main b1305ddc7c (release build, linux x64):

mkdir a b c
printf '{"name":"p","version":"1.0.0"}\n' > a/package.json
printf '{"name":"p","version":"1.0.1"}\n' > b/package.json
printf '{"name":"p","version":"1.0.1"}\n' > c/package.json
printf '.a { color: red }\n' > a/x.css
printf '@import "evil-pkg/x.css";\n.a { color: red }\n' > b/x.css
printf '.a { color: red; background: url("evil-pkg/x.png") }\n' > c/x.css
NO_COLOR=1 bun pm diff ./a ./b # the new @import gets no note
NO_COLOR=1 bun pm diff ./a ./c   # ! new module imports: evil-pkg/x.png

The new tests in test/cli/install/bun-pm-diff.test.ts fail on a debug build of main and pass on this branch.

CI on 5762fd9fe9 (build 138032): the diff is green.

  • 28 test files fail on every retry: 27 in test/aot/ and test/bundler/compile-aot-size.test.ts. All 28 also fail on main.
  • The other failures are tests that passed on a retry or when run alone.
  • No failure is in a test that this PR touches. test/cli/install/bun-pm-diff.test.ts fails on no lane.
  • cargo clippy, cargo miri test, Format and the lint checks pass.

Walkthrough

The CSS parser now records CSS imports through mutable import-record lists. bun pm diff includes CSS import targets in import summaries, classifies package-owned targets, and preserves package-path checks when file filters apply.

Changes

CSS imports in bun pm diff

Layer / File(s) Summary
CSS parser import-record handling
src/css/css_parser.rs, src/css/rules/import.rs, src/css/Cargo.toml, src/css/lib.rs, scripts/rust-test.ts
The parser passes import-record vectors by mutable reference and appends records through parser methods. It assigns indices when a record list is available and tracks layers independently. Tests cover record paths, indices, and parsing without a record list.
CSS import summaries and package classification
src/runtime/cli/pm_diff_normalize.rs, src/runtime/cli/pm_diff_command.rs, test/cli/install/bun-pm-diff.test.ts, docs/pm/cli/pm.mdx
Import normalization collects CSS @import and url() targets with specified exclusions. bun pm diff excludes package-owned imports and retains the full right-side path list for checks when filters apply. Tests and documentation cover the behavior.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked that the @ import record moved from on_import_rule to rule_without_block keeps the same path, kind and 1-byte range for parse_bundler, and that the has_file binary search in print_diff is sound because Tree.files is a BTreeMap so new_paths is collected in sorted order. A decoy-file case (a shipped evil-pkg/x.css shadowing @ import "evil-pkg/x.css") was also looked at and judged consistent with the stated "own file" semantics rather than a bug.

Extended reasoning...

The change rewires the CSS parser's import-record plumbing (replacing raw-pointer aliasing with a plain &mut and threading input through rule_without_block) and adds URL-shaped own-import filtering to bun pm diff; the parser half appears behavior-preserving for the bundler, while the posted inline findings concentrate on the heuristic is_own_import string checks over package-controlled CSS targets.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/runtime/cli/pm_diff_normalize.rs — Reviewers get no new module imports note for a new @ import "evil-pkg/x.css" when the same sheet holds one declaration the strict parser rejects, such as the IE hack color: red !ie. normalize_css parses with ParserOptions::default (error_recovery: false) and returns None at src/runtime/cli/pm_diff_normalize.rs:922, so the record list is discarded before print_diff reads it. Fix: scan imports with error_recovery = true (as the runtime loader does at src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:3689) and keep the import list even when the canonical print falls back to text, so one bad declaration cannot blank the note.

    Why this was flagged

    A package's new side ships a sheet that contains both a new @ import "evil-pkg/x.css" and any declaration the parser rejects (color: red !ie). It reaches normalize_css through print_diff at src/runtime/cli/pm_diff_command.rs:1398. StyleSheet::parse fails because a declaration error with error_recovery: false (src/css/css_parser.rs:1461-1466, default at src/css/css_parser.rs:2993) aborts the whole parse, and .ok()? at src/runtime/cli/pm_diff_normalize.rs:922 drops the already-filled import_records. norm_new is None, so the loop at src/runtime/cli/pm_diff_command.rs:1411 never runs and ast_notes prints nothing. The base branch behaves the same for url(), but the base never recorded @ import at all, so for the population this PR exists to serve the detection is absent on every legacy sheet with vendor hacks, and a hostile author defeats it by appending one invalid declaration. The parser already supports lenient parsing (options.error_recovery = true at src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:3689); using it for the import scan removes the gap.

    Verification: normalize_css builds bun_css::ParserOptions::default(None) (src/runtime/cli/pm_diff_normalize.rs:912), whose error_recovery: false (src/css/css_parser.rs:2993). .ok()? at pm_diff_normalize.rs:922 then returns None, discarding import_records with the @ import entries the PR newly pushes. The base branch already discards the whole record list, so merging makes nothing worse.

The test calls only the CSS parser. bun_css gets the
bun_sema_standalone dev-dependency that the other tested crates have, and
a place in the list of `bun run rust:test`.
A `./` or `../` target of a style sheet is now resolved against the
folder of the sheet. It is listed if it leaves the package, as
`../evil-pkg/x.css` at the root does. A path that stays inside is not
listed, as before.

A target with a scheme, `%`, `\`, a tab or a line break is never taken
for a file of the package, so `/\host/x.css` is listed. The `data:`
scheme of a `url()` is matched without case, and a target that is only a
query is dropped.

The inline findings are handled in 5762fd9. Each thread has the details.

The finding outside the diff is correct: a sheet that the strict parser rejects has no import list. This PR does not change that. The reasons:

  • It is the same on main for url(). normalize_css returns None, the file gets the not parsed badge, and no note comes from it.
  • I measured the 1,034 release diffs from the PR body. The parser rejects the new side of 181 of 10,725 changed sheets (29 diffs, 14 packages). Three of those sheets have an @import that the old sheet does not have. The note misses one of those targets: a Google Fonts URL in example/dynamic-start/resources/step.css of intro.js 8.4.0.
  • The parser rejects a rule or a declaration that a browser drops. Examples: input[type=file]::file-selector-button[disabled] (sakura.css 1.5.0) and color: var(--#41403e-light-10) (papercss 1.8.0).
  • The canonical print must stay strict. A tolerant parse drops the bad rule from the text that the diff shows.

A second, tolerant parse of both sides for the import list alone can close the gap. It also removes a wrong entry when the parser rejects only the old side: the note for papercss 1.8.1 to 1.8.2 names a Google Fonts @import that 1.8.1 also has. Then a file with the not parsed badge becomes a source of notes. The second parse also counts against the 64 MB cap of normalize_css, because the arena is never reset. 12 of the 1,034 diffs are past that cap today. That is a decision for a maintainer. The PR body lists it under "Not in this PR" with these numbers.
