sys: fall back to read/write on a socket when the kernel denies recv/send - #47100
In a sandbox whose seccomp policy denies sendto(2), process.stdout.write('A', cb) in a child with piped stdio fails: EPERM: operation not permitted, write ... at writeFast (internal:fs/streams:382:38). fs.writeSync(1) and a Node child work there. Regression from 1.4.2 to 1.4.3.
The same policy breaks process.stdin, Bun.stdin, Bun.file(fd), a subprocess's stdin and spawnSync capture, which share the bun_sys wrappers.
Fix
bun_sys::send_non_block / recv_non_block (src/sys/lib.rs) retry a send/recv that failed with EPERM or ENOSYS through RWF_NOWAIT, or poll(0) then write/read on older kernels. If the retry works, a process-wide flag sends later calls straight to the fallback, as SUPPORTS_STATX_ON_LINUX does.
The flag sets only when the file syscall on the same fd did not fail the same way. A per-fd EPERM (a firewall rule on a datagram socket) reports as before.
Correct because write/read on a socket carry the same bytes, RWF_NOWAIT is MSG_DONTWAIT per call (Linux 6.4+), and SIGPIPE is ignored at startup.
Verified: test/regression/issue/47085.test.ts (5 paths times EPERM, EACCES, ENOSYS, SECCOMP_RET_TRAP, all fail unfixed). Also the process-stdio, process-stdin, spawn, child_process, bun-write and fs-stat-seccomp suites.
Not covered: the socketpairs uSockets owns (process.send IPC, stdio[3+], net.connect({fd})). process.send spins silently under the same policy. Follow-up in Notes.
Every send_non_block/recv_non_block call pays one relaxed atomic load and one branch (counted from the diff). No new syscall. Binary size not measured (no bloaty here).
Under the sandbox on a kernel before 6.4, a write larger than the space poll saw on a blocking socket blocks until drained, as Node does.
The test needs cc and seccomp headers. It warns and returns where they are missing, as fs-stat-seccomp-linux.test.ts does.
Notes
Repro needs a filter that returns EPERM for sendto (nr 44 on x86_64). With it, 1.4.2 prints SA and callback: ok, 1.4.3, 1.4.4 and main print S and callback: EPERM. A ptrace trace shows 1.4.2 issuing write(fd) and 1.4.3+ issuing sendto(fd) for the same process.stdout.write.
Without the filter every version prints SA. The bug needs a sandbox that blocks sendto or send but not write. A real producer of that policy is the network-restricted seccomp mode in the codex sandbox.
The reporter's sandbox allowed recvfrom (the parent captured S), so only the send side showed there. The recv side fails the same way under a filter that denies nr 45, which the test covers.
The report also says a Node child lost the A byte while its callback fired. A sendto filter does not produce that (a Node child under the test's filter prints SA), so that observation is not explained by this change.
Latch errnos: EPERM (SECCOMP_RET_ERRNO, the common policy) and ENOSYS (bun's SIGSYS handler reports it for SECCOMP_RET_TRAP, the Android shape). send/recv on a stream socket do not return these on their own.
The container kernel is 6.1, so the RWF_NOWAIT arm returned EOPNOTSUPP here and the tests ran the poll + write/read arm. The RWF_NOWAIT arm is the same call the pipe arm of PipeWriter::try_write makes. Each call on the fallback costs one pwritev2 (once, then latched off), one poll and one write.
The spawn-sync case exercises the parent's streaming reader (PipeReader::sys_read). drain_fd in spawn/process.rs runs only with memfd disabled and is covered by the same wrapper.
bun-write.test.js "Bun.file(0) survives GC" and child_process.test.ts "extra stdio pipes are not double-closed on GC" hit their 5 s ceiling in this container under load (20 debug spawns take 6.3 s). Both pass alone or print OK. "spawn still works with more than 10240 fds open" fails here because the debug binary loads its bundled JS from disk.
Follow-up for uSockets: a per-socket fallback in packages/bun-usockets/src/bsd.c for fds adopted with us_socket_from_fd, and write_check_error in SendQueue::write (src/runtime/ipc.rs) so a fatal errno closes the channel. shell: write one pipe slot per POLLOUT to a blocking stdout or stderr (Linux) #46307 adds a write classifier in PipeWriter.rs: whichever lands second re-checks the Socket arm of try_write against the latched path.
Self-reviewed: 13 concerns raised, 11 addressed. Rejected: exposing the latch as a pub fn for PipeWriter (no caller today; the latched path already behaves like the pipe arm), and chunking the fallback write(2) (the RWF_NOWAIT arm bounds it on current kernels).

A seccomp policy that blocks sendto/recvfrom with EPERM (a common way to
deny networking) made process.stdout.write, process.stdin, Bun.stdin and
spawnSync output capture fail on the socketpair behind a child's stdio.
Node only uses read/write on a stream handle, so it kept working.
send_non_block and recv_non_block now latch a process-wide flag on EPERM or
ENOSYS and serve that call and every later one with poll(0) plus write(2) or
read(2).
…the seccomp exec helper
A per-fd EPERM (a firewall rule on a datagram socket handed to Bun.file)
must not move every later socket write onto read/write. The latch now sets
only when write(2)/read(2) on the same fd did not fail the same way.
The fallback tries pwritev2/preadv2(RWF_NOWAIT) first, as the pipe arm
does, so a socket whose O_NONBLOCK was cleared by an inherit spawn keeps
the per-call nonblocking write on kernels that have FMODE_NOWAIT on
sockets (6.4 and later).
The test uses the same pre-exec C helper as fs-stat-seccomp-linux.test.ts:
process-wide, arch-checked, errno-parameterised (EPERM, ENOSYS, TRAP), and
a distinct exit code when the environment forbids a filter.
POSIX socket send and receive wrappers now use read and write fallbacks when the socket syscalls are denied. Linux and Android cache syscall denial and RWF_NOWAIT support state. Linux regression tests exercise stdio and subprocess scenarios under seccomp filters.
The receive and send wrappers use read and write fallbacks after EPERM or ENOSYS, and cache denial state. Linux and Android use RWF_NOWAIT when available, or poll readiness before reading or writing. Pipe-writer comments describe the fallback and send flags.
Linux tests exercise five stdio and subprocess scenarios with sendto or recvfrom denied by EPERM, ENOSYS, or a trap. The tests skip when the helper cannot be built or seccomp cannot be installed.

An fd-specific sandbox rule could cause a large subprocess-stdin write to block unexpectedly on an older kernel. This is a narrow risk to address or explicitly accept before merging.

Explanation
The changes address the coding requirement in [#47085]. send_non_block and recv_non_block retry denied socket calls through write and read, using RWF_NOWAIT or readiness polling. The process-wide latch activates only after the fallback succeeds, while per-fd denial preserves the original error. The regression test covers socket-backed stdout, stdin, Bun.stdin, subprocess stdin, and spawnSync capture under EPERM, ENOSYS, and seccomp TRAP. The stdout case verifies captured SA and callback:ok.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked two things: the non-denied path in recv_non_block/send_non_block is unchanged (rc => rc returns the original recv/send result untouched), and the SOCKET_RWF_NOWAIT_UNSUPPORTED latch cannot trip on a mere would-block, since read_nowait/write_nowait map EAGAIN to Err, not Ok(None).
Extended reasoning...
The change rewires bun_sys::recv_non_block/send_non_block in src/sys/lib.rs to fall back to RWF_NOWAIT or poll(0)+read/write when the kernel returns EPERM/ENOSYS, latched via three process-wide atomics, plus a Linux-only seccomp regression test. It touches no auth, crypto or injection surface but does change blocking and signal semantics on every socket stdio path. Seven verified findings (a 100% CPU spin when poll is also denied, a blocking JS thread on pre-6.4 kernels, lost MSG_NOSIGNAL, a per-fd EPERM latching the global flag) are posted inline, so this is not approvable as-is.
Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.
…al, skip the test for real
A sandbox that denies poll(2) as well as the socket syscalls made the
fallback look like "not ready" forever. poll errors now propagate, so the
caller sees the original send/recv error instead of spinning.
A "not ready" result from the fallback proves nothing about the denial,
so it no longer sets the process-wide flag.
The test declares its cases with skipIf when cc, the seccomp headers, or
the filter itself are unavailable, instead of a bare return that reports
a pass.
