What does this PR do?

An exception that user code throws in a net.Socket listener such as 'connect' goes to that socket's 'error' event, and the socket is destroyed. Node reports an uncaughtException and leaves the socket as it is. Any socket with .on("error", () => {}) therefore swallows the programming errors of its own listeners.

const net = require("node:net");
const server = net.createServer(s => s.destroy()).listen(0, "127.0.0.1", () => {
  const c = net.connect(server.address().port, "127.0.0.1", () => {
    server.close();
    throw new TypeError("thrown in the 'connect' listener");
  });
  c.on("error", e => console.log("socket 'error' event:", e.message));
});
process.on("exit", code => console.log("exit code", code));
result
Node v22.22.0, v26.3.0 uncaught TypeError, stack on stderr, exit code 1, the 'error' listener does not run
Bun 1.4.2, main socket 'error' event: thrown in the 'connect' listener, exit code 0
this PR the same as Node

It was never correct, so it is not a regression.

Cause. The native socket gives what a handler throws to the handler table's error entry, and closes a socket whose open threw. That is the documented contract of Bun.connect and Bun.listen. node:net uses error for failures of the transport, so it cannot tell the two apart. #35347 caught the throw around single emits ('data', 'connection', the handshake events). Every other emit and callback was still open.

Fix. reportThrows() in src/js/node/net.ts wraps the three handler tables once, so nothing that a handler throws reaches the native dispatch. A throw ends the handler and goes to reportError, as a throw ends the handle's callback in Node. This is the fixing line; the rest of the diff is what follows from it:

  • The catches of node:net: route throws from 'data'/'connection' listeners to uncaughtException and keep the socket alive #35347 in pushDataToSocket and the two handshake handlers are now redundant and are removed (most of the diff is their indentation, git diff -w on net.ts is +79 -45). Those around 'connection' and onread stay, because they go on after the report.
  • alpnCallback and serverName are not wrapped. What they throw refuses the handshake.
  • Some handlers relied on "a throw destroys the socket" for work that comes after user code. Each now does that work itself:
    • a failed write completes in a callback of its own (failWriteCallback), as in Node, so the socket is still destroyed. It reports on the next tick, because it can run under a destroy() that an 'uncaughtException' listener made, where a report at once exits with code 7;
    • the hold on the loop goes after a 'readable' listener throws at EOF;
    • a refused client certificate still destroys the socket after a 'tlsClientError' listener throws;
    • after a throw from 'connect' or 'ready' the handle stops reading unless a read was asked for. Node's first read comes after the listeners, so there the connection does not hold the loop.
  • A socket that went to another process has a handle without an owner. SocketHandlers2 threw a TypeError there and relied on error to drop it. The check is now made once, in the wrapper, and open clears req before the listeners run (test-cluster-net-send.js).
  • tls.connect({ session: 123 }) stays the socket's 'error': open returns that error, which the native dispatch takes for a thrown one.
  • The --tls-keylog writer and the server's 'keylog' run before the socket's listeners, as Node's first two listeners do. With the socket alive, a throwing listener otherwise leaves holes in the file.

No native code changes. Bun.connect and Bun.listen keep their contract.

Measured, Node v26.3.0 against main and this PR, with an uncaughtException handler. Each row holds for net, tls and unix sockets unless it says otherwise. Node v22.22.0 gives the same in all 300 runs.

thrown from side Node main this PR
'connect', 'ready' client uncaught, socket alive socket 'error', destroyed as Node
'connect' after destroy() client uncaught lost as Node
callback of a write() made before the connection client uncaught, alive socket 'error', destroyed as Node
'drain', callback of a write() that waits for the kernel both uncaught, alive socket 'error', destroyed as Node
the same on a socket over an fd (child.stdio[3]) uncaught, alive socket 'error', never closes as Node
'connectionAttemptFailed' client uncaught lost as Node
'keylog', 'session' (TLS 1.2) client uncaught, alive socket 'error', destroyed as Node
server 'keylog', TLS server 'drop', 'tlsClientError' for a refused certificate server uncaught lost as Node
'connect' of the socket under node:http and node:http2 client uncaught 'error' of the request or session as Node
'data', 'readable', 'end', 'close', 'timeout', 'lookup', 'connectionAttempt', 'secureConnect', 'secure', 'finish', 'pause', 'resume', 'error', callbacks of end(), setTimeout() and of a write() that completes at once both uncaught uncaught unchanged
'connection', 'secureConnection', 'listening', 'close', net 'drop', callbacks of listen() and close() server uncaught uncaught unchanged

Receiver, state of the socket (destroyed, writable, readable, connecting, bytesWritten), a byte sent afterwards and the exit code agree with Node in 294 of 300 runs (main: 235). The other 6 are in the list below (4), a run where Node itself hangs, and a sample taken before a debug build finishes its handshake.

One difference from Node that stays. A throw from 'connect' skips the 'connect' listeners behind it. In Node those include the first read of a socket that already has a 'data' listener, and a write() made before the connection, so that socket never reads and that write never leaves. Here the data arrives, the write goes out and a TLS handshake completes. I did not copy a socket that is stuck for good.

Not the same cause, not changed:

Related. #29762 is an open PR for the 'connect' and 'ready' emits only. It wraps those two sites, predates #35347 and conflicts with main. This PR covers them, so it can replace #29762.

How did you verify your code works?

  • test/js/node/net/node-net.test.ts, block uncaughtException from socket listeners: 43 new tests over two fixtures that run unchanged under Node. The expected values are what Node v22.22.0 and v26.3.0 print. All 43 fail with USE_SYSTEM_BUN=1 (1.4.2) and with main's net.ts in the same debug build, and pass with this PR. The repro above is one of them.
  • Two more are guards for the wrapper and pass on main too: a row in ALPNCallback errors refuse the connection… (node-tls-server.test.ts) and a session of the wrong type is the socket's 'error' (node-tls-connect.test.ts).
  • Mutation: 18 clauses of the diff removed one at a time (each table's wrap, the owner check, the order in open, the two unwrapped callbacks, each try, each condition of the read stop, the order in keylog). Each makes at least one test fail. The owner check and the order in open are held by test-cluster-net-send.js.
  • Transport errors, before and after: ECONNREFUSED, ECONNRESET on a read and during a write, an untrusted certificate, a peer that does not speak TLS. The events are the same as on main.
  • Bun.connect and Bun.listen: a throw from open, data, drain and close, on both sides, reaches that socket's own error handler, as on main.
  • Debug build, linux x64, against the same binary with main's net.ts:
    • 1,348 vendored tests (test-{net,tls,http,https,http2,cluster,pipe,socket,child-process,domain,stream-pipeline,dgram}-*): none fails with this PR only.
    • 111 bun:test files of node/net, node/tls, node/http, node/http2, node/cluster, node/child_process and bun/net: 3,939 pass. The 29 tests that fail are the same 29 on main.
    • Both sweeps ran before the last two changes (the try/finally around 'tlsClientError', the wrap of the onread table's data). After those I ran the 415 vendored net, tls, https, pipe and socket tests and the 40 bun:test files of node/net and node/tls again, with the same result.
    • The container has no IPv6, so both sides ran with 0.0.0.0 as the default listen() host.
  • tsc -p src/js and the three test files: no errors. macOS and Windows are not run locally. The rows that need a unix socket, an fd pipe or a write in flight are skipped on Windows, each with its reason.

Walkthrough

Network and TLS socket handlers now report callback exceptions through updated paths. Failed write callbacks and TLS handshake processing also use revised error and teardown handling. New fixtures and tests cover callback throws, event order, data delivery, socket closure, and TLS errors.

Changes

Network and TLS callback handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Socket callback and write handling
src/js/node/net.ts, test/js/node/net/listener-throw-*-fixture.js, test/js/node/net/node-net.test.ts
Socket handler tables and stream callbacks use guarded exception reporting. Failed write callbacks and socket-end handling use updated error paths. Keylog file appends occur before keylog events. Fixtures and tests cover thrown callbacks across network transports and socket events.
TLS handshake and connection errors
src/js/node/net.ts, test/js/node/tls/node-tls-connect.test.ts, test/js/node/tls/node-tls-server.test.ts
Client handshake processing checks the peer certificate against the configured identity. Rejected server certificates trigger socket destruction even if a tlsClientError listener throws. TLS session setup errors return to native dispatch. Tests cover invalid session values and an ALPN callback that returns a Symbol.

Possibly related issues

  • oven-sh/bun#43381 — The issue describes listener exceptions becoming socket error events and incorrect teardown, which overlap with the updated exception reporting and teardown paths.
  • oven-sh/bun#46473 — The issue involves a throw from the TLS checkServerIdentity callback. This change updates TLS handshake exception handling, but the issue’s queued-data and client-certificate requirements are broader.

Emit kSecureConnectDone from finally and preserve the fallback path.

A throwing secureConnection listener can prevent the completion event. _releaseControl() normally returns true for the server handshake, but the completion fallback must remain for an already-released socket. Guard the standalone path so a destroyed socket does not emit the event.

Run independent process-spawning cases concurrently.

The test guidance prefers concurrent tests when multiple tests in the same file spawn processes or write files, unless concurrency is very difficult. These cases invoke separate bunRun processes and use independent arguments or per-test temporary paths. Use it.concurrent.each for the process-spawning tables in this block and the nearby blocks, except where the skipIf(...).each API cannot support the change.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the reportThrows wrapper itself: handler.$apply(this, arguments) keeps the this.data lookup in ServerHandlers.error working, the socket.data === undefined early return matches the if (!self) return guards the SocketHandlers/ServerHandlers members already had, and the tlsClientError try/finally still runs destroy(verifyError) before the rethrow reaches the wrapper — none of those regress.

Extended reasoning...

The change wraps the three native handler tables in src/js/node/net.ts so a listener throw goes to reportError instead of the native error dispatch, replaces direct write-callback invocations with a try/catch helper, and adds readStop/destroy work the old throw-destroys-socket path used to do implicitly; it touches no auth or crypto decision paths (alpnCallback/serverName are deliberately left unwrapped). Two confirmed findings on the pre-connect write hold and the fd-socket error path are posted inline, so a human review is already signalled; this note only records the wrapper-level checks that were ruled out.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

🔴 A client whose throwing 'connect' callback was registered before a pre-connect write() now keeps the process alive forever, where the base branch destroyed the socket and exited. In the catch at net.ts:3659 the skipped flush listener leaves kwriteCallback set, so readStop keeps the handle's ref even though that write was never handed to the handle and nothing can ever complete it. Node does not hold the loop there. Fix: after a throw from 'connect' or 'ready', a write still parked on the skipped once('connect') listener must not keep the loop hold (unref it, or flush or fail that write), on the plain and TLS paths alike.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: const c = net.connect(port, host, () => { throw new Error("boom") }); c.write("x"); with a process.on('uncaughtException') handler and nothing else holding the loop. Socket.prototype.connect registers the callback with this.once("connect", cb) at net.ts:2453; the later write() runs _write while connecting, which sets this[kwriteCallback] and this._pendingData and registers its flush as a second once("connect") listener at net.ts:3058-3067. In afterConnect the emit("connect") at net.ts:3653 stops at the throw, so the flush listener never runs. The catch at net.ts:3659 calls readStop(self, self._handle); readStop at net.ts:986 only unrefs the handle when self[kwriteCallback] is falsy, so the native handle stays paused and ref'd, and the parked write is never sent nor failed (its callback never fires). The process never exits; a peer waiting for those bytes waits forever. On the base branch the same throw went to the native error handler, SocketHandlers2.error destroyed the socket, the parked write failed through onClose at net.ts:3061 and the process exited.

Verification: In src/js/node/net.ts, in afterConnect, self.emit("connect") (line 3653) runs the user callback first; it throws, so the flush listener never runs. The catch at line 3659 calls readStop(self, self._handle). In readStop (lines 980-987) kwriteCallback is still set from the parked write, so the handle keeps its ref. The socket stays open, paused and ref'd forever; the process never exits.

🟡 (optional) Users of an fd-backed net.Socket (child.stdio, IPC pipes) whose write callback throws on a write error now also get the socket's 'error' event, which Node never emits there. In SocketHandlers.error the throw is swallowed at net.ts:914 by failWriteCallback and the handler goes on to net.ts:917 and emits 'error'. In Node the throw ends onwriteError before errorOrDestroy, so no 'error' is emitted; with no listener the process now sees two uncaught exceptions instead of one, and a listener runs that Node would not call. Fix: when the write callback throws, end the handler as Node's onwriteError does: report the throw and return without emitting 'error' (same at net.ts:1829-1836 where destroyNT still runs).

Why this was flagged

A net.Socket over an fd (new net.Socket({ fd }) on child.stdio[3] or a pipe) writes with a callback that throws when the write fails with EPIPE. The native dispatch calls SocketHandlers.error at net.ts:905. On the base branch callback(error) threw straight out of the handler, so self.emit('error') at the old line was never reached. After this PR failWriteCallback at net.ts:914 catches the throw and defers it to nextTick, and the handler continues to net.ts:917 and emits 'error' synchronously. In Node (lib/internal/streams/writable.js onwriteError) cb(er) throws before errorOrDestroy, so the socket emits no 'error' at all; the only report is the callback's throw. The user therefore gets an 'error' listener call Node never makes, or, with no listener, an extra uncaught exception (the EPIPE) before the callback's own throw. SocketHandlers2.error at net.ts:1826-1836 continues to destroyNT the same way. Remedy: return after reporting when the write callback threw, matching Node's delivery channel.

Verification: On the base the handler called callback(error), so a throw left the handler and self.emit("error", error) was never reached. After this PR net.ts:914 failWriteCallback(callback, error) swallows the throw, then net.ts:917 self.emit("error", error) runs synchronously. The fd fixture (test/js/node/net/listener-throw-fd-fixture.js) only covers the write-success case, not the EPIPE case.
