A stream counts its frames as sent when they are serialized. On a graceful close the session was destroyed while part of a body was still in the parser's write buffer: detach() freed it, and the socket's FIN followed the bytes the kernel already had. parser.detach(true) keeps that output. The parser stays in the socket's native-callback slot, ignores inbound frames, writes the output from writable events and then lets go of the socket. A shutdown() of the socket in that time is held back, and the parser issues it after the last byte. The session 'close' event of a graceful close now follows the socket's 'close', as in node.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the parser's lifetime while it drains from inside on_native_writable: the call holds its own keepalive before finish_draining drops the socket slot's ref, so Drop cannot run mid-call. I also traced a fatal drain write and a peer that closes mid-drain: transport_write_fatal makes owes_output() false so finish_draining frees the kept buffer and detaches, and on_native_close frees it on the close path, so neither leaks write_buffer or leaves the parser attached.
Extended reasoning...
Findings-present ruled-out note only: the inline comments already flag what needs a human look on this native socket/parser lifecycle change, and the paths named here were checked against the keepalive in on_native_writable and the three release sites of the kept write_buffer.

On the graceful path,
socket.end()synchronously runsinternal_flush(), which callsclose_and_detach(Normal). That detaches the HTTP/2 native callback beforeparser.detach(true). The parser then has no native socket, soowes_output()is false anddetach(true)clears pending frames.Keep the socket attached, call
parser.detach(true)first, then invoke the native handle'sshutdown(). The HTTP/2 shutdown callback can then defer the FIN until the pending output drains.Suggested fix

session.close()orserver.close()ofnode:http2cuts a body that is serialized but not yet written: the peer gets 2,652,707 of 16,777,216 bytes, then a clean'end'. Node and bun 1.3.14 deliver it.destroy()callsparser.detach(), which frees the unwritten frames. Since 1.4.0 (node:http2: rewritten inbound engine, batched write path, server push, +290 node v26.3.0 tests (79% passing) #31584) one batch serializes a whole body.Fix
destroy()callsparser.detach(true): the parser keeps those frames, ignores inbound frames, and stays attached until writable events have written them.NewSocket::shutdownleaves the FIN to that parser. After a graceful close the session'close'follows the socket's'close', as in node.test/js/node/http2/node-http2-graceful-close.test.ts(19 of 22 fail on main),test/js/node/http2/, vendored node tests.Background
H2FrameParseris a session's native HTTP/2 engine. What the socket refuses stays in itswrite_buffer.write_buffer.kMaybeDestroygate inclose():destroy()afterclose()would still free the buffer.Downsides
gdb stepi:shutdown()+3 instructions (114 to 117), a writable event on an HTTP/2 socket +2, an HTTP/2 read event +4. Text +812 bytes.'close'after the socket's'close', as in node. A peer that stops reading holds it, and the queued frames.destroy()withoutclose(), a peer's half-close,process.exit()from a stream's'finish'(Notes).Notes
Repro. A raw HTTP/2 peer opens the largest window (2^31-1), sends one request and reads everything. The server runs
stream.respond(),stream.end(Buffer.alloc(16 MiB)),stream.session.close(). The kernel takes about 2.6 MB, the rest waits inwrite_buffer. The trigger is the part the kernel has not taken, not the size of the body: with the default 64 KiB window the stream stays open until the peer's WINDOW_UPDATEs have let every frame out.Regression. bun 1.3.14 delivers the body, 1.4.0 to 1.4.3 and main cut it. 1.3.14 wrote a body frame by frame and kept the stream open behind a full socket. The batched write path of #31584 serializes the whole payload, flushes once, and reports the write complete (
send_data), so the stream closes with most of the body unwritten. This PR does not changesend_data. It makes the end of the session safe for whatever is unwritten.Related open PRs.
'close'and'error'from the socket's'close'on every destroy path and destroys the socket on adestroy()withoutclose(). This PR takes the graceful-path emit only. node:http2: destroy the socket on session.destroy() without close(), emit the session 'close' once the socket has closed #38195 rebases over it.node:net's own queued bytes in the same arm ofNewSocket::shutdown. The two conditions compose: both leave the return value alone and send the FIN natively.shutdown()a boolean return and parks_finalfor TLS over a Duplex. This PR keeps the return value of main, so it does not add a second protocol.send_datacause above as its follow-up.Not in this PR.
close()(twoit.todocases). Node delivers it. Main gets 2,652,707 bytes to the peer and bun 1.3.14 none, so it is not part of the regression.net.Socketanswers the FIN withend()and then destroys the socket. The fix is to park that_final, which is the protocol of node:tls: complete write(cb) and end(cb) over a Duplex when the stream completes the ciphertext #43877. A first version of this PR did it with its own protocol. It is on branchrobobun/953366a6/http2-peer-half-close-park.destroy()withoutclose(), anddestroy(err): unsent frames are dropped and the call stays immediate, on purpose.destroy(err)is how the flood guards end a session whose peer does not read (guard test: a PING flood closes the socket). A plaindestroy()needs node:http2: destroy the socket on session.destroy() without close(), emit the session 'close' once the socket has closed #38195's end-then-destroy of the socket. Node delivers these over TCP.end()callback,'finish'and'close'still fire when the frames are serialized.process.exit()ordestroy()from them still cuts the body. This is thesend_databound that node:http2: rewritten inbound engine, batched write path, server push, +290 node v26.3.0 tests (79% passing) #31584 removed. No PR exists for it yet.destroy()too). It needs the cursor queue of socket: drain node:net's pending-write queue with a cursor #44219.Self-review. 27 concerns. 20 are addressed in this shape. The largest: a first version also parked
net.Socket's_finalfor the half-close case. That was a secondshutdown()protocol beside #43877, and it made a client reportEPIPEin one teardown order, so it is out. Others: a draining parser ignores inbound frames from the moment of the destroy, also under a frame dispatch (it answered PINGs before). The'close'wait no longer depends on which buffer holds the tail, so a TLS tail in the uSockets spill is covered.shutdown()does not run the parser's cork, so a TLS-over-Duplex transport keeps main's order. 3 concerns asked for no change. 4 are not done: 3 ask for thesend_databound in this PR. It is a separate change: with it the delivery cases pass on main over loopback, and this PR is still needed for the last slice. 1 asks for a socket-owned tail, which needs #44219.What the test file covers. 22 cases and 2
it.todo. 19 cases fail on main:server.close(),session.close()(TCP and TLS),close()from the stream's'close',close()thendestroy()(from the stream's'close', and in the'stream'event with PING frames behind the request),write()calls in one turn and in a later turn of the loop, trailers, compatres.addTrailers(), the peer's GOAWAY, theclose()callbacks (TCP and TLS),process.exit()in theclose()callback, a client upload (TCP, TLS, TLS over a Duplex), and the order of the two'close'events (TCP and TLS). 3 guard cases pass on main too: the peer resets or destroys its socket, and a PING flood from a peer that does not read. The delivery cases need a kernel that refuses part of the body. Where it takes all of it, they pass on main too, and the'close'order cases still fail there.Node v26.3.0. A port of the delivery cases delivers the whole body in each. Node answers no PING while the closed session drains, and neither does this change.
