Needs oven-sh/WebKit#797. WEBKIT_VERSION points at that PR's preview build until it merges.

What this does

BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals is one switch. Unset, which is the default, nothing changes.

Value Meaning
* every built-in is immutable, JavaScriptCore's and Bun's
anything else that is not empty an error at startup, so a typo cannot leave a program unprotected without a word

* covers the global object, every object it holds, every prototype in the realm whether it has a name or not, and from each of those the functions it holds. Array.prototype.map = f, Headers.prototype.get.call = f, globalThis.fetch = f, delete globalThis.JSON and a new global all fail with a TypeError in strict code. It applies to the main thread, workers, node:vm contexts and ShadowRealms.

Attributes do not change, so what inherits from a built-in can still shadow it: class A extends Array { map() {} } and new Error().name = "x" work.

How Bun's built-ins are covered

JavaScriptCore finds what exists when the option is applied: no code but the engine's and Bun's has run yet, so whatever is there is a built-in. Bun calls applyImmutableGlobalsOption() once its global object is set up.

Most of Bun's classes are created on first use. They are covered as they are created, at the places every such class already goes through:

Place Covers
createClassStructure() in BunClientData.cpp the prototype of every generated class
JSDOMGlobalObjectInlines.h WebCore constructors
namespaceObjectOf() objects that are API, not state, with the objects they hold: Bun.password, Bun.FFI.read, process.versions, process.config.variables
didCreateBuiltin() by hand File, the require function prototypes, node error classes, gc, Bun.$, Bun.sql, Bun.SQL

Built-in modules that finish a native class

Eight built-in modules add to a native class as they load: node:events links process to EventEmitter, node:worker_threads gives MessagePort its emitter methods, node:perf_hooks adds to Performance.prototype, and so on. By then the class is immutable.

They now use three native functions in place of Object.defineProperty(), delete and Object.setPrototypeOf(): defineBuiltinProperty, deleteBuiltinProperty and setBuiltinPrototype, from internal/shared. Each one converts its arguments first, then makes one native write, then covers the function it added. No JavaScript runs while the write is allowed, and an assertion build crashes if any tries. On a target that is not immutable they take the ordinary path, so with the option unset the behaviour and the error messages are those of the functions they replace. Where one replaces a plain assignment it defines, so a setter a program put there is not called; process.channel of a cluster worker is the only such place that runs after a program's code.

The target of such a write is one a program cannot have replaced. Under * a global keeps its value, so a module can look there. A module's exports do not, so node:quic takes SocketAddress and BlockList from the native binding, not from node:net's exports: require("node:net").SocketAddress = { prototype: Array.prototype } gets nothing added to Array.prototype.

A lazy property is built before the write is allowed, because what builds it may run JavaScript.

expect.extend() and the setTimeout.clock marker of jest.useFakeTimers() write from Rust under the same rule. The marker is allowed only on Bun's own setTimeout function: with the option unset a program can put a Proxy there, whose trap is JavaScript.

What a program can no longer do under *

Each was run on this build, and fails with a TypeError in strict code, or a SyntaxError for a let, const or class. The option is on or off: nothing exempts one of them.

  • process.exitCode = 1, process.title = "x", process.env = {}, process.noDeprecation = true
  • Error.stackTraceLimit = 50, Error.prepareStackTrace = f
  • Buffer.poolSize = 1
  • console.log = f, spyOn(console, "log")
  • Bun.$.cwd("/"), Bun.$.nothrow()
  • globalThis.x = 1, globalThis.onerror = f, self.onmessage = f in a Web Worker
  • A top-level var, function, let, const or class in code that runs in the global scope, where a declaration is a new global: bun -e with CommonJS code, bun repl, vm.runInThisContext(); in (0, eval)(), a var or function
  • require("node:domain").create().enter(), which assigns process.domain
  • --trace-events-enabled, --trace-event-categories and trace_events.createTracing().enable(), which replace the global timers and methods of console
  • mock.timers.enable() of node:test, which replaces the global timers and Date
  • expect.extend({ 0: f }), a matcher whose name is an index

These still work: process.env.X = "1", process.argv.push("x"), process.on("exit", f), process.chdir("/"). So do top-level declarations in every file, .js, .ts, .cjs or .mjs: a module's scope is its own.

In a node:vm context the built-ins are immutable, and its global names live on the sandbox object the program passed to createContext(), which is the program's own: var a = 1 and globalThis.Array = 1 in the context write to that object, and delete globalThis.JSON takes the name away from that context. A context made with vm.constants.DONT_CONTEXTIFY has no such object and behaves the same: the class of a context's global object cannot be made immutable, so the names are written on it. Neither reaches the realm that created the context.

Bun's own code that needs a stack trace limit or a stack format of its own for a moment (node:util, node:assert, node:repl, --trace-env-js-stack) uses JSGlobalObject::setStackTraceLimitOverride() or takes the call sites natively, and assigns neither Error.stackTraceLimit nor Error.prepareStackTrace. console[Symbol.asyncIterator] does not replace itself on first use. inspector.open() sets process.debugPort natively. What Bun keeps on a built-in for its own use is still written: the exports of abort-controller on AbortController, process._exiting, process.env and Bun.env of a thread that shares them with SHARE_ENV, and process.channel of a cluster worker that disconnects. --stack-trace-limit, --trace-exit, --expose-gc and bun -e with require work.

What changes with the option unset

Each row was run on this build and on 1.4.3. Node agrees with this build on the first three; it does not have the last two.

A program does this first 1.4.3 This build
globalThis.process = {...}, then inspector.open(0) the port goes on the program's object, and debugPort of the real process stays 9229 debugPort of the real process is the port
util.getCallSites(5) with a non-writable Error.stackTraceLimit of 1 1 call site 5
Object.freeze(Error), then assert.strictEqual(1, 2) or util.getCallSites(1) a TypeError, from assigning Error.stackTraceLimit an AssertionError; 1 call site
require("node:net").SocketAddress = class {}, then loads node:quic what node:quic adds goes on the program's class it goes on the real class
for await (const line of console) replaces console[Symbol.asyncIterator] on first use, and throws a TypeError if console is frozen leaves it, and reads the line

Not covered

Each row was run on this build, and the write goes through under *.

Still writable Why
The exports of a built-in module and the classes written in JavaScript behind them: require("node:fs").readFileSync = f, EventEmitter.prototype.on = f, Readable.prototype.x = 1, Module.prototype.require = f Left for a later change, which can make a module's exports immutable after its first load
What process.binding() returns Bun's own modules use and patch the same objects
The global console of a node:worker_threads worker It is a Console instance that keeps its group indentation on itself
Instances that are state: Bun.stdout, Bun.s3, Bun.redis, Bun.env, process.argv State, not API
Bun.SQL reached as Object.getPrototypeOf(Bun.sql).constructor before Bun.SQL is read, the size function of CountQueuingStrategy, performance.nodeTiming Written in JavaScript inside built-in modules, as in the first row
An object that is not a function, inside a covered function or prototype: Bun.CryptoHasher.algorithms From a covered object only functions are followed

expect.extend() can replace an existing matcher, which is its job.

Tests

test/js/bun/jsc/immutable-globals.test.ts, 43 tests, each in a subprocess:

  • what * covers, seven other values, and the option unset;
  • a walk from every standard global that requires each object and function it reaches to be non-extensible;
  • what Bun creates on first use;
  • every built-in module loads, while a planted newListener listener tries to write;
  • another built-in put under node:net's SocketAddress, the class node:quic finishes, is left as it is;
  • node:vm contexts, workers, ShadowRealms, expect.extend(), fake timers, spyOn(), console, native setters, the startup flags, node:inspector, node:repl, and what Bun itself writes on a built-in.

It passes on a debug build with assertions against the WebKit branch.

Walkthrough

The PR adds immutable-global handling across native bindings and runtime modules, with tests for built-ins, contexts, and stack behavior. It introduces native call-site and stack-limit override helpers, changes console stream caching, and updates the pinned WebKit version.

Changes

Immutable globals and runtime behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Native immutability primitives
src/jsc/VM.rs, src/jsc/bindings/BunClientData.*, src/jsc/bindings/ErrorCode.*, src/jsc/bindings/bindings.cpp
Native helpers define, delete, and update built-in properties and prototypes. A VM guard enables lazy materialization, and native setters can reject writes to immutable owners.
Global and namespace immutability
src/codegen/bindgen-emit.ts, src/jsc/bindings/BunObject*, src/jsc/bindings/BunProcess.cpp, src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp, src/jsc/bindings/NodeVM.cpp, src/jsc/bindings/JSMockFunction.cpp, src/jsc/bindings/webcore/*, src/jsc/bindings/JSWrappingFunction.cpp
Global initialization registers built-ins and applies the immutable-globals option. Bun and process namespace objects are associated with their owners, and selected setters and spyOn reject immutable targets.
Native property operations in runtime modules
src/js/bun/ffi.ts, src/js/internal/process/pre_execution.ts, src/js/internal/quic/quic.ts, src/js/node/{crypto,events,perf_hooks,worker_threads,zlib}.ts, src/jsc/bindings/{ExposeNodeModuleGlobals,JSCommonJSModule}.cpp, src/runtime/test_runner/*
Runtime modules use native property definition, deletion, and prototype helpers. Global setup, CommonJS setup, matcher registration, and timer marker updates include lazy-materialization handling.
Native stack helpers and callers
src/jsc/bindings/FormatStackTraceForJS.*, src/js/internal/{shared.ts,assert/assertion_error.ts,repl/node-errors.js,process/pre_execution.ts}, src/js/node/{repl.js,util.ts}
Native helpers capture call sites and manage stack-trace-limit overrides. Assertion construction, environment tracing, REPL interruption, and call-site inspection use these helpers. Error.captureStackTrace rejects immutable targets.
Console stream caching
src/js/builtins/{BunBuiltinNames.h,ConsoleObject.ts}
The console async iterator is cached on Bun.stdin, and the writer is cached on Bun.stdout. The iterator name is added to the private builtin identifiers.
Immutable-global and runtime tests
test/js/bun/jsc/immutable-globals.test.ts, test/js/node/vm/vm.test.ts, src/js/internal/test_runner/mock_timers.ts
Tests cover immutable-global settings and runtime behavior, including stack operations, console additions, timer mocking, and VM context cleanup. The explicit MockDate.prototype.toUTCString assignment is removed.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked whether throwIfSetterOwnerIsImmutable can be handed a null owner from setProcessDebugPort / setProcessTitle — getProcessObject falls back to defaultGlobalObject(...)->processObject(), a LazyProperty that initializes on access, so the owner is never null there; and the new spyOn immutability check runs before any call that can enter JS, so no exception check is missed.

Extended reasoning...

The change adds JSC immutableGlobals support across ZigGlobalObject, NodeVM, six custom setters in BunObject/BunProcess, Error.captureStackTrace, spyOn, and rewrites stack-trace-limit handling in several src/js built-ins, plus a WebKit pin bump to a preview tag; it touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface. Seven inline findings (preview-tag pin, isInsideNodeModules regression, prepareStackTrace setter bypass, vm globalThis immutability timing, --stack-trace-limit startup throw, --trace-env-js-stack limit-0 regression, console getter caching) already signal that a human must review, so this body only records the two concerns that were examined and ruled out.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🔴 src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp — Users running with * can still swap the immutable Error's stack formatter, so every later err.stack is rendered by their function despite the option. Object.create(Error).prepareStackTrace = fn reaches errorConstructorPrepareStackTraceSetter (ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1248), which ignores thisValue and stores into m_errorConstructorPrepareStackTraceValue with no immutability check. Fix: every custom setter whose state lives outside its owner calls throwIfSetterOwnerIsImmutable on the owner first, covering the 3 sites this PR leaves out. Same pattern at 3 sites (ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1248, ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1292, ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1305). [also at: src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1316 - With BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals listing globalThis, code can still change what globalThis.onmessage and globalThis.onerror read as, which the option is meant to forbid.]

    Why this was flagged

    Start bun with BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals='*' so Error is immutable, then run Object.create(Error).prepareStackTrace = (e, sites) => 'owned'. JSC's put walks the prototype chain, finds the CustomValue property installed at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:3091 and invokes errorConstructorPrepareStackTraceSetter at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1248. That setter never looks at thisValue or at hasImmutableProperties() and writes m_errorConstructorPrepareStackTraceValue at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1258. From then on computeErrorInfoToJSValueWithoutSkipping (FormatStackTraceForJS.cpp:611) formats every error's .stack through the user function. The direct assignment Error.prepareStackTrace = fn is refused by JSC and the PR added throwIfSetterOwnerIsImmutable to six other setters for exactly this bypass, but this setter and setGlobalOnMessage/setGlobalOnError (ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1292, 1305) were not given the guard. On the base branch nothing is immutable, so there is no promise to break; after merge the option is advertised as freezing Error yet this route changes its behaviour silently.

    Verification: In src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp, line 3091 installs the property as a custom setter on the Error constructor. Lines 1248-1262 errorConstructorPrepareStackTraceSetter ignores thisValue, performs no hasImmutableProperties() check, and unconditionally stores into m_errorConstructorPrepareStackTraceValue (line 1258). FormatStackTraceForJS.cpp:611-617 reads it for every error's .stack computation.

  • 🟡 src/js/internal/process/pre_execution.ts — Users who run with BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals=* and pass --stack-trace-limit=N get a startup TypeError instead of a working process. pre_execution.ts:299 assigns Error.stackTraceLimit after applyImmutableGlobalsOption has frozen Error, so the write throws before any user code runs. Fix: apply the CLI limit without writing the frozen property, for example via the new setStackTraceLimitOverride helper or by setting the limit natively before applyImmutableGlobalsOption(vm) runs in GlobalObject::finishCreation, so Bun's own flag keeps working whichever globals are listed. The PR lists this under "Not covered"; it is Bun's own flag failing, not the option doing its job.

    Why this was flagged

    ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2807 calls applyImmutableGlobalsOption(vm) at the end of GlobalObject::finishCreation, so by the time pre_execution.ts runs, Error has immutable properties when * or Error is listed. pre_execution.ts:297-300 then executes Error.stackTraceLimit = limit whenever --stack-trace-limit was passed; the assignment is refused with a TypeError and startup aborts. On the base branch there is no immutable option so the flag always works. The PR description names this case under "Not covered" as an accepted cost, but it is a Bun CLI flag that cannot be combined with the new env var at all, and the PR already adds jsFunctionSetStackTraceLimitOverride (FormatStackTraceForJS.cpp:933) which could carry the value without touching the frozen property.

    Verification: Triggering condition: BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals lists * or Error and the process is started with --stack-trace-limit=N. src/js/internal/process/pre_execution.ts:297-300 is unchanged by the PR and still does if (Number.isFinite(limit)) Error.stackTraceLimit = limit;. One detail is wrong: startup does not abort. The base branch has no such option and the flag always works there.

  • 🟡 src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp — nit: With BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals including *, the console._stdout and console._stderr getters never cache their value, so every read re-runs the process.stdout / process.stderr lookup. sweep:console->putDirect\(vm, property, (stdoutValue|stderrValue) The sibling getter getConsoleConstructor at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2829 was updated to materialize under AllowLazyMaterializationOfImmutableProperties, but ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2848 and ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2863 still call putDirect on the immutable console, which is refused silently. Fix: wrap those two putDirect calls in the same AllowLazyMaterializationOfImmutableProperties scope so the materialized property sticks when console has immutable properties.

    Why this was flagged

    The trigger is reading console._stdout or console._stderr (node:console and user code touching Console internals) in a process started with BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals containing *, which makes console immutable at src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2807. getConsoleStdout at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2848 and getConsoleStderr at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2863 call console->putDirect to replace the custom getter with the value, with no AllowLazyMaterializationOfImmutableProperties scope; per the PR's own account of the Console getter, a putDirect on an immutable object is refused without a word. The getter still returns the right stream, so the only effect is that the cache never sticks and each read repeats processObject()->get(...) at line 2845/2860, which is why this is a nit. On the base branch the putDirect succeeds and later reads are plain property reads. The diff fixed exactly this for the Console getter at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2828-2831 but not for its two siblings.

    Verification: Trigger: BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals containing *, then any read of console._stdout / console._stderr. The getters at src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2848 and 2863 replace the accessor with a bare putDirect, with no JSC::AllowLazyMaterializationOfImmutableProperties scope, so the write is refused and the CustomValue getter runs on every read. No test covers _stdout/_stderr.

🔴 Every build (CI and local prebuilt) will fail with a 404 the moment oven-sh/WebKit#797 merges or closes, because WEBKIT_VERSION pins the preview tag "autobuild-preview-pr-797-e71041dd". GitHub deletes autobuild-preview-pr-* releases when the WebKit PR closes, as scripts/build/download.ts:320 documents. Fix: before merging, replace the pin with the merged main commit sha of oven-sh/WebKit (the autobuild-<sha> release), as the PR description itself says is pending.

Why this was flagged

prebuiltUrl at scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts:73 builds the tarball URL from cfg.webkitVersion, which defaults to WEBKIT_VERSION at scripts/build/config.ts:59. scripts/build/download.ts:320-336 states that autobuild-preview-pr-* releases only exist while the WebKit PR is open and that every build 404s at once when it merges or closes. If this PR lands with the preview pin, the main branch's build dependency disappears as soon as WebKit#797 is merged, so CI and any fresh checkout cannot download JSC and fail with "WebKit preview release is gone". The base branch pins a 40-hex sha (0c06faadf65bf8e8c8ad3a5a8aca83e1e9ed653f) whose release persists. The PR description acknowledges the pin is to be replaced by the merge commit, but the code as submitted still carries the transient tag.

Verification: normal — acknowledged in diff: the author knows the pin is temporary but the change as submitted still ships it; the trigger is oven-sh/WebKit#797 merging or closing, after which the preview release is deleted. scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts:6 now reads export const WEBKIT_VERSION = "autobuild-preview-pr-797-e71041dd";. scripts/build/download.ts:318-336 states the hazard: "so every build 404s at once".

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🔴 src/jsc/bindings/BunProcess.cpp — Users who list process (or Bun) get silent state corruption where the base works: a SHARE_ENV worker's env stops syncing with the parent, and process._exiting never becomes true at exit. Native code still stores runtime state as plain properties of these objects with putDirect, which an immutable owner refuses without a word. Fix: keep state the option covers out of the owner's properties (resolve process.env/Bun.env through the LazyProperty, expose _exiting from m_isExiting) or write it under AllowLazyMaterializationOfImmutableProperties, which covers the 3 sites listed. Same pattern at 3 sites (BunProcess.cpp:351, JSEnvironmentVariableMap.cpp:965, JSEnvironmentVariableMap.cpp:973). [also at: src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2815 - Users who list process or Bun and spawn a worker with env: SHARE_ENV get a main thread whose process.env (or Bun.env) silently stops matching the worker's.]

    Why this was flagged

    Run with BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals=process, read process.env once (reifies the env PropertyCallback entry at BunProcess.cpp:5062 as an own property), then create a worker_threads Worker with env: SHARE_ENV. ensureSharedEnvStoreForWorker builds the shared store and at JSEnvironmentVariableMap.cpp:965 does processObject->putDirect(vm, envIdentifier, shared, 0); with the same for Bun.env at :973 when Bun is listed. The PR describes putDirect on an object with immutable properties as refused without a word, so the parent's process.env keeps pointing at the orphaned pre-swap JSEnvironmentVariableMap while the worker uses the shared store: parent writes are invisible to the worker and vice versa. On the base branch nothing is immutable and both threads share one store. Likewise dispatchExitInternal at BunProcess.cpp:351 does putDirectNamed(vm, process, "_exiting"_s, jsBoolean(true)) on exit; refused, so process.nextTick at src/js/builtins/ProcessObjectInternals.ts:393 no longer drops callbacks during exit. The PR guarded six setters with throwIfSetterOwnerIsImmutable, but these direct native writes were not covered.

    Verification: putDirect on an object with immutable properties is silently refused; the diff wraps console->putDirect in JSC::AllowLazyMaterializationOfImmutableProperties for that reason. src/jsc/bindings/BunProcess.cpp:351 putDirectNamed(vm, process, "_exiting"_s, jsBoolean(true)) and src/jsc/bindings/JSEnvironmentVariableMap.cpp:965 processObject->putDirect(vm, envIdentifier, shared, 0) get no such scope and no guard.

The last 4 reviews of this pull request each found new blocking issues, repeatedly in src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp. Where they share a root cause, one fix may close them together.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🔴 src/js/node/domain.ts — Users who list process get a TypeError from node:domain's run(), enter() and exit(), where the base runs the callback. domain.ts:76 and domain.ts:83 assign process.domain, a property process never has, so the strict-mode write onto the immutable object throws before fn runs. Fix: keep every write Bun's own JS makes onto process off the object once it is immutable, e.g. expose process.domain as a native accessor over domain.active and install the --trace-env proxy and --trace-exit wrapper before applyImmutableGlobalsOption, which covers the 4 sites listed. Same pattern at 4 sites (src/js/node/domain.ts:76, src/js/node/domain.ts:83, src/js/internal/process/pre_execution.ts:198, src/js/internal/process/pre_execution.ts:252).

    Why this was flagged

    Run BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals=process bun -e 'require("node:domain").create().run(() => console.log("ran"))'. src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2816 applies the option at the end of finishCreation, so process has immutable properties before any module runs. d.run (src/js/node/domain.ts:60-69) calls this.enter(), and src/js/node/domain.ts:76 executes domain.active = process.domain = this; BunProcess.cpp defines no domain property, and src/codegen/bundle-modules.ts:268 prepends "use strict" to every built-in module, so adding a property to the immutable object throws TypeError. The finally at domain.ts:66-68 runs exit(), whose write at domain.ts:83 throws the same way, so the callback never runs; on the base branch nothing is immutable and "ran" is printed. The test at immutable-globals.test.ts:456 only requires node:domain, it never calls run(), so the suite does not catch it.

    Verification: Triggered whenever BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals names process and code calls domain.run(), enter() or exit(). src/js/node/domain.ts:76 and :83 write a new own property onto process, which has no domain property; built-in modules are strict (src/codegen/bundle-modules.ts:268), so run() throws TypeError before the callback runs, where the base branch executes it. The test at immutable-globals.test.ts:456 never calls run().

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

The last 5 reviews of this pull request each found new blocking issues, repeatedly in src/js/internal/shared.ts, src/jsc/bindings/BunClientData.cpp and src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp. Where they share a root cause, one fix may close them together.

  • Also unresolved: 1 minor or pre-existing, 1 blocking on lines changed since (possibly already fixed).

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🔴 src/js/internal/process/pre_execution.ts — Operators who set BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals=* and pass --trace-events-enabled or --trace-event-categories get a TypeError at startup instead of a trace file, and node:trace_events createTracing().enable() throws the same way. pre_execution.ts:317 calls initFromCli, whose activate() runs installTimerInstrumentation at src/js/internal/trace_events.ts:471-474, which assigns globalThis.setTimeout and three siblings in strict built-in code on the now-immutable global; installConsoleInstrumentation at trace_events.ts:729-765 assigns console.count and four siblings the same way. Fix: install those nine wrappers through jsFunctionDefineBuiltinProperty, as installExitTracing already does for process.exit at pre_execution.ts:255. [also at: src/js/internal/trace_events.ts:474 - Operators who run with BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals=* and --trace-events-enabled (or --trace-event-categories, or trace_events.createTracing().enable() at runtime) get a TypeError on stderr and a trace file with no timer, fs or console events, where the base records them. activate() at trace_events.ts:207 always calls installTimerInstrumentation, whose strict-mode globalThis.setTimeout = ... at trace_events.ts:471 is refused by the immutable global and throws before installInstrumentation() runs.]

    Why this was flagged

    Run BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals=* bun --trace-events-enabled app.js (or --trace-event-categories=node, or call require("node:trace_events").createTracing({categories:["node"]}).enable() at runtime). src/js/internal/process/pre_execution.ts:316-317 sees catString and calls initFromCli; src/js/internal/trace_events.ts:199 calls activate(), which at trace_events.ts:207 calls installTimerInstrumentation. trace_events.ts:471 does globalThis.setTimeout = wrapTimerFunction(globalThis.setTimeout, false) (then setInterval, clearTimeout, clearInterval at 472-474). Built-in modules are compiled strict (src/codegen/bundle-modules.ts:268), and the global object has immutable properties after applyImmutableGlobalsOption at src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2815, so the assignment throws TypeError, as the PR's own test shows for globalThis.fetch = 1 (test/js/bun/jsc/immutable-globals.test.ts:116). The throw escapes pre_execution before user code runs, so the process dies at startup. On the base branch nothing is immutable and tracing works. No test runs a trace-events flag with the option set.

    Verification: src/js/internal/process/pre_execution.ts:316-317 calls initFromCli(catString, filePattern). src/js/internal/trace_events.ts:199 initFromCli calls activate(); :207 calls installTimerInstrumentation(); :471-474 do plain assignments globalThis.setTimeout = wrapTimerFunction(globalThis.setTimeout, false);. src/codegen/bundle-modules.ts:266-268 injects "use strict";, so a failed assignment throws TypeError.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🔴 src/jsc/bindings/BunObject.cpp — Under *, every read of Bun.$ builds a new shell, so Bun.$ !== Bun.$ and err instanceof Bun.$.ShellError is false; Bun.$ = x is dropped with no TypeError. The merge from main made $, sql, postgres and SQL CustomValue getters whose cache write at BunObject.cpp:403 is a bare putDirect, which the immutable Bun object refuses; the same pattern is guarded in getConsoleConstructor at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2835. Fix: in lazyBunObjectValue, after create() returns, put the cached value under AllowLazyMaterializationOfImmutableProperties and pass it to didCreateBuiltin, and make replaceLazyBunObjectValue throw via throwIfSetterOwnerIsImmutable, which covers all four entries (BunObject.cpp:959, :1046-1048). [also at: src/jsc/bindings/BunObject.cpp:403 - Under *, every read of Bun.$ builds a new shell function with its own ShellError and ShellPromise classes, so Bun.$ !== Bun.$ and err instanceof Bun.$.ShellError is false.]

    Why this was flagged

    Run with BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals=* a script that does try { await Bun.$false } catch (e) { console.log(e instanceof Bun.$.ShellError) }. The merge commit c7ce94d brought in #46021, which turned $, sql, postgres and SQL from PropertyCallback entries into CustomValue getters (src/jsc/bindings/BunObject.cpp:959, :1046-1048) served by lazyBunObjectValue. That getter runs create() and then caches with bunObject->putDirect(vm, propertyName, value, DontDelete) at BunObject.cpp:403, ignoring the result. Under * the Bun object has immutable properties, so that putDirect is refused silently, exactly the case the PR guards in getConsoleConstructor (src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2834-2839). The property therefore never materializes and every read re-runs createBunShell (BunObject.cpp:359-391), which calls the createBunShellTemplateFunction builtin; that builtin defines a fresh class ShellError per call (src/js/builtins/shell.ts:16), so two reads of Bun.$ give different functions and different ShellError classes. The setter replaceLazyBunObjectValue (BunObject.cpp:408-413) does the same refused putDirect and returns true, so "use strict"; Bun.$ = 1 is dropped with no TypeError. On the base branch the option does not exist and the first read caches. No test under * reads Bun.$, Bun.sql or Bun.SQL.

    Verification: Under * the Bun object has immutable properties: test/js/bun/jsc/immutable-globals.test.ts:107-109 pins TypeError Bun.serve = 1 / Bun.fresh = 1. The cache write at src/jsc/bindings/BunObject.cpp:403 is a bare putDirect, unguarded unlike getConsoleConstructor at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2835-2836, so every Bun.$ read re-runs createBunShell (:359-391) and Bun.$ = x runs replaceLazyBunObjectValue (:408-413), which returns true with no TypeError.
