Beyond the inline findings, I also checked two paths and ruled them out: the socketIsConnecting guard treating a non-net.Socket Duplex with connecting: true as ready matches node's JSStreamSocket wrapping (never connecting), and the server session that is destroyed before its socket connects still emitting 'connect' later mirrors node's setupHandle, so neither is a regression introduced here.
Extended reasoning...
The change replaces the per-subclass connecting/state getters in src/js/node/http2.ts with base-class getters driven by a new Ready flag, adds socket-readiness handling for server sessions (plain 'connect', 'secureConnect', or the internal kSecureConnectDone symbol), and makes both #onClose paths report ERR_SOCKET_CLOSED when the socket closes before the session is ready. It touches no auth, crypto, or input-parsing surface, but it alters observable error-emission behavior for unobserved sessions and changes event ordering, which the inline findings already flag. The posted findings plus the behavioral change to error emission mean a human should weigh the compatibility trade-off, so this is not an approve.

src/js/node/http2.ts— A client or server session with no 'error' listener whose socket closes before it is ready now throws from inside the socket's 'close' emit, so the session never emits 'close' and later socket 'close' listeners are skipped; on the base branch it only emitted 'close'. The new$ERR_SOCKET_CLOSED()at http2.ts:5491 (server: http2.ts:4391) reaches destroy(), which emits 'error' synchronously at http2.ts:5978 and only afterwards schedules the 'close' tick at http2.ts:5982. Fix: make the lost-socket error reach the user without aborting the socket's 'close' dispatch or the session's own 'close', e.g. schedule emitSessionCloseNT before the 'error' emit, or defer the error emit to a tick as node's socketOnClose does, at both #onClose sites. Why this was flagged
An http2 client is built with a createConnection socket (or a performServerHandshake session over a connecting socket) and no 'error' listener on the session, which the base branch tolerated because its #onClose never produced an error (Socket.prototype._destroy at net.ts:2387 clears socket.connecting before 'close', so the old
this.connectingtest was false). The socket is destroyed before the session is ready; the socket's 'close' listeners run in order and the session's #onClose at http2.ts:5491 now builds $ERR_SOCKET_CLOSED() because the Ready bit was never set, and calls destroy(err, NGHTTP2_NO_ERROR). In destroy(), http2.ts:5978 emits 'error' with no listener and throws; the throw unwinds out of EventEmitter.emit('close') on the socket, so http2.ts:5982 (process.nextTick(emitSessionCloseNT)) never runs and every socket 'close' listener registered after the session's is skipped. The server session has the same shape at http2.ts:4391/4405 feeding http2.ts:4876/4880.Verification: Client
destroy()emits synchronously viarunInFrame(asyncFrame, this.emit, this, "error", error)at 5978 and only afterwards schedulesprocess.nextTick(emitSessionCloseNT, ...)at 5982. With no 'error' listener the emit throws out of destroy(), out of#onClose, and out of the socket's 'close' emit: the session 'close' tick is never scheduled and later socket 'close' listeners are skipped. -

src/js/node/http2.ts— pre-existing: a client that called close() while still connecting, with a request queued, hangs forever when its socket then dies: no 'error', no 'close', the request never settles. #onClose at http2.ts:5496 nulls #parser before calling destroy(err), and destroy's early-out at http2.ts:5874 (#closed && !#connected && !#parser) returns without emitting anything, dropping the new ERR_SOCKET_CLOSED. Fix: a socket 'close' on a closed-but-unready session must still cancel the queued requests and emit 'close' (node emits 'close' plus the two errors), e.g. let #onClose destroy before clearing #parser or make the early-out also require no pending requests. The PR notes decline this path; the consequence is an unbounded hang for the close(cb) callback and the pending stream. Why this was flagged
Caller runs client = http2.connect(url); req = client.request(h); client.close() before the socket connects, and the peer then drops the TCP connection. request() queues req in #pendingRequests at http2.ts:6302 because #connected is false. close() at http2.ts:5848 schedules no destroy because the queue is non-empty. The socket 'close' runs #onClose: http2.ts:5491 now builds $ERR_SOCKET_CLOSED() (connecting is true), http2.ts:5493 streamCancel does not reach the queued req (it has no id), http2.ts:5496 sets #parser = null, then http2.ts:5498 calls destroy(err). destroy() hits http2.ts:5874: #closed is true, #connected false, #parser null, so it returns before cancelling #pendingRequests (http2.ts:5912), before emitting 'error' (http2.ts:5978) and before process.nextTick(emitSessionCloseNT) (http2.ts:5982). The close(cb) callback never runs and req stays pending forever. The base branch behaves the same (err was null there), so this is pre-existing; node emits 'close' and ERR_HTTP2_STREAM_CANCEL/ERR_SOCKET_CLOSED. The PR description item 5 acknowledges the early return but leaves it.
Verification: pre-existing; acknowledged in PR description item 5, which is accurate. Trigger: request() then close() before ready, then the socket closes without an 'error'. In /home/claude/bun/src/js/node/http2.ts, #onClose nulls #parser (5496) then calls destroy(err) (5498), which returns at the early-out (5874) before cancelling #pendingRequests or emitting 'error'/'close'. The base has the same #onClose and early-out, so it already hangs.

The second push (934f950) cuts this PR down to the getters. No session emits a different event now. What the review of the first push found, and what this push does with it:
New in this push: the client's The first push stays on the branch |
…cting true until the socket is ready
Http2Session gets the READY bit of node's kState.flags. The base class
defines connecting and state from it. state returns {} unless the session
is ready and not destroyed.
A client sets READY where node runs setupHandle: when it takes its
socket, or in the constructor for a connected socket. A client that
close() ended with nothing queued does not get READY. A server session
sets READY in its constructor, and its connecting still follows the
socket.
The client's encrypted, alpnProtocol and originSet follow READY, as in
node. An originSet read before the socket connects no longer caches an
origin with no port. pendingSettingsAck reads the count of SETTINGS
frames that are not acknowledged, on both sides, and counts the first
frame from the time the session is ready.
No session emits a different event. The client #onClose reads the
socket's own connecting flag, as the getter did before.

The third push (dd90cf8) takes the three optional findings from the review of the second push. It still changes no event.
The description has the new numbers: 18 of the 27 tests fail with main's |

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline nit, I also checked the #onClose change from the session's connecting to the socket's own flag — the removed client getter returned exactly socket.connecting || false, so the ERR_SOCKET_CLOSED decision is behavior-preserving; and the count-derived pendingSettingsAck in both session classes now matches node's pendingAck > 0 once ready, with the initial frame excluded while connecting. The two optional items from the last round (alpnProtocol following READY, the counter-derived getter) are covered by dd90cf8; the server-session unconditional Ready for a still-connecting socket is the one open thread from that round.
Extended reasoning...
The commit moves connecting/state onto the abstract Http2Session base behind a node-style Ready flag, derives pendingSettingsAck from the outstanding-frame counter, and gates client encrypted/alpnProtocol on readiness; it touches no security-sensitive surface beyond node:http2 session accessors. Two of the three optional items raised on the prior push are addressed in this commit; the ServerHttp2Session unconditional Ready remains as acknowledged by the PR's downsides section. The only new finding is a port-reuse flakiness nit in the new lifecycle test file.
…onnection A port that a listener just released can go to a listen(0) of another test file. The local port of a live connection cannot.

The two new commits address what I raised earlier: pendingSettingsAck is now derived from the counter on both the client and server twins, alpnProtocol follows READY, and the refused-connection test takes its port from a live connection's local end. Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the client #onClose switch to the socket's own connecting flag — it reads the same value the removed per-class getter did (null socket included), so the ERR_SOCKET_CLOSED path is behavior-preserving — and the > (connecting ? 1 : 0) threshold against the initial-SETTINGS count of 1 for a ready server session, which reports true until the first ACK as node does.
Extended reasoning...
The diff moves the state and connecting getters of node:http2 sessions onto the base class behind a READY flag, drops the #pendingSettingsAck booleans in favor of the existing counter, and adds a lifecycle test file; it touches no security-sensitive surface. One pre-existing finding (session.state read from an 'aborted' listener inside destroy()) is posted inline, so this note only records the prior feedback that the new commits resolved and the refactor equivalences checked this run.
